After going to church and taking care of the cattle, I was relaxing on the couch the Sunday after Thanksgiving, getting an overload of football, especially the OSU victory over TTUN (That Team Up North) and eating entirely too much, again. I began to contemplate what to share with the OCA members in the winter magazine. Of course, the usual came to mind. I thought I’ll just share a review of the beef industry in 2025.

As I began to look back and research some notes and articles, I quickly realized how daunting of a task that could turn into. In January alone, the CME Feb. 25 live cattle price went from 192.00 to 208.00 per cwt. Wow, we all know now that was just the start of market volatility. Every article and column published in early 2025 indicated the same scenario, Cattle numbers down, demand at an all-time high, no herd expansion likely to occur until 2028.

Fast forward 11 months, still the same market volatility, whether resulting from adverse negative marketing news to current upswings as a result of USDA delayed cattle on feed reports, the narrative is still constant. Demand is still high, both domestic and abroad.

These are just highlights stemming from the first week of the year.

In January alone, we inaugurated a new President, a new Secretary of Agriculture, DOGE etc… Yes, looking back it was a very, to say the least, eventful year. But overall I would say it was a very positive year for Ohio’s cattle industry and I am optimistic that 2026 will offer the same for cattle producers.

With Thanksgiving behind us and Christmas almost here, it is a season and a time for us, especially in agriculture, to be thankful.

We live in a country where we are free to attend a church of our choosing, able to work at an occupation we choose, have friends of our choosing, and to enjoy many, many things that populations of other countries do not have the opportunity to enjoy.

I would also like to thank the members of OCA and its directors and staff for allowing me to represent them and share their voices as part of the cattle industry in Ohio. It truly is an honor that you all had the confidence in me to represent our state and together be a part of making our industry better. I’m sure your next president Lindsey Hall will represent the Ohio Cattlemen and women and youth of our state with the same, if not greater, degree of passion for the improvement of our association and the industry we represent. Once again thank you, and I wish all a Blessed and Merry Christmas!

As we look forward to the New Year, I hope you have Jan. 24 marked on your family’s calendar and are making plans to attend the first-ever Buckeye Cattlemen’s Summit. The Summit will include OCA’s annual meeting, awards banquet and other familiar events. It will also include some exciting new events and will be held at a new location, the OSU campus in Wooster.

The Hereford, Shorthorn and Simmental associations will hold their individual breed meetings in conjunction with the Summit.

Seedstock breeders registering for their breed’s luncheon can also attend the Summit’s morning and afternoon educational workshops for no additional cost. Descriptions of the two educational workshops are detailed in the Summit’s schedule and included in this issue.

Youth education will also be a focus of the Summit, with opportunities to participate in some Ohio Beef Youth Council (OBYC) contests and events. The OBYC leadership team will assist with these programs including an interactive session on determining carcass value that youth participants in the Fed Cattle Carcass Contest are required to attend. This informative session will also be open to youth who are not participating in the Fed Cattle Carcass Contest. Additionally, the OBYC will hold a Stockmanship Contest on beef cut identification during the Summit. Awards for the beef cut I.D. contest will be presented during the Buckeye Cattlemen’s Luncheon.

Following the luncheons, the Ohio Cattlemen’s Foundation will present nearly 30 scholarships. These include the traditional scholarships made possible by your purchase of the state’s beef license plate and support of the Cattlemen’s Gala. Did you know that for every specialty Ohio Beef plate sold, $15 of the total $25 charge comes to the cattlemen’s foundation to fund scholarships? Additional scholarships include the Saltwell Western Store Ohio Beef Expo scholarships, the Bill Tom Memorial scholarships and the John Grimes Memorial scholarships. Thanks to the generosity of these donors many more industry youth will be assisted in reaching their future education and career goals.

OCA is pleased to host Gene Copenhaver the 2025 NCBA President-Elect at the Buckeye Cattlemen’s Summit. Gene, and his family, raise cattle in Virginia and at the conclusion of the NCBA Convention in early February in Nashville, Gene will assume the reins as president of NCBA. The OCA awards banquet that evening will feature the recognition of seven outstanding individuals, farms and a county association, all who have made significant contributions to the success of OCA and Ohio’s beef industry. The event will conclude with the opportunity to say thank you to OCA’s outgoing president Mark Goecke of Allen County for his tremendous leadership and guidance over the last two years.

My wish for each of you this holiday season is to enjoy time spent with the important people in your lives. Happy Holidays and see you January 24!

THE RUFF REVIEW

Uncertainty as We Head Toward a New Year Garth Ruff, Beef Cattle Field Specialist, OSU Extension 2025 has been one for the record books in the cattle business. We have seen historically high cattle prices at the farm gate and beef prices on the grocery store shelves.

We have also seen extreme volatility in the cattle markets caused by uncertainty. The volatility has been reflected by a steep crash in the futures markets and cash cattle suffering immediate losses.

Uncertainty in the marketplace has been fueled by numerous factors, including political statements, bearish commodity traders, and most recently the announcement that Tyson plans to end operations of one major fed cattle packing plant and slow down operations at another.

Renowned business author, Stephen Covey wrote that, “If there’s one thing that’s certain in business, it’s uncertainty”.

In response to the current uncertainty, I would remind you of a couple of things.

1. The underlying fundamentals of the current cattle market have not changed. Cattle supply remains limited, and despite high retail prices, demand for quality beef appears to still be strong.

2. There are risk management tools available both for cattle feeders and cow-calf operators.

Markets have been and will continue to be reactive. Being proactive with a risk management plan whether contracts, options or LRP is key. If there was ever a time to dust off an enterprise budget, say from a 8 | Ohio Cattleman | Winter 2026

land grant university, that time is now in preparation for 2026.

My dairy specialist counterpart likes to remind me that “the cure for high prices is high prices.”

While we have seen prices drop recently, nearly $2,000 feeder calves are still nothing to scoff at.

My caution to the previous statement is that not all $2,000 feeder calves are made the same. We see great differences in cost of production in this state from one producer to the next. Herd size, cow size, feed usage, genetics, and land value all contribute to that difference in cost of production.

Usually, uncertainty leads to questions. As I have worked with our Extension educators across the state in planning our winter meetings, questions have been asked about risk management, cow herd profitability, and the value of genetics. What do these things all have in common?

Good production and financial records are needed to not only make an informed decision but to see any impact after the decision is made. For those looking for a New Year’s resolution, improved farm record keeping should be toward the top of the list.

I often start Extension programs with a question for those in attendance to loosen things up and get a feeling for the audience. It is my goal that before I retire, (which is not in the foreseeable future) to be with a group of Ohio cattlemen where the majority can with certainty, answer the following questions:

What is the annual cost of production for a cow in your system?

What does it cost to develop and maintain a bred heifer?

Or even more straight forward ones such as: • •

What is the average mature weight of your cow herd?

How many pounds of calf did you wean per cow exposed?

A good set of scales and accurate production records will be worth the time and investment as we go forward in this cattle cycle. Record keeping, both production and farm financial records will continue to be of increased importance for those looking to not only be profitable but for those looking for certainty in uncertain times.

A FOCUS ON THE BEEF CATTLE BUSINESS WITH THE OSU EXTENSION BEEF TEAM

Winter is Time for Planning Jordan Penrose, Morgan County OSU Agriculture and Natural Resource Extension Educator Winter is an excellent time of the year for planning things on the farm for the upcoming year. Winter offers that rare chance for you to slow down, reflect, and plan. As we get closer to the new year, people start thinking and talking about their resolutions, or what they would like to do better or differently. Have you thought about applying the same principle to your farm? Setting goals now can help you make the upcoming year go smoother and maybe even less stressful. We can take things that we have learned from the past to help us improve in the future. Maybe it’s improving your pasture management, adjusting your calving window, or keeping better records. Just remember each year will bring new challenges and I feel like this past year was no different as we started with tight hay supplies, then a really wet spring, then the weather changing to almost no rain for the summer and early fall. These experiences can help shape what you want for the upcoming year and beyond.

When it comes to making a plan just remember the one thing that we can definitely not control is the weather. The weather in Ohio for 2025 was a wild ride across most of the state. Planting and hay making seasons were wet and difficult for many. During the past two years Ohio has experienced some big droughts, with 2024 making the largest impact in the southeast and 2025 the largest impact in the northwest. These weather patterns can leave some lasting impacts on different things like forage quality, pasture growth, and even animal performance. This year in Extension we spent some time looking 10 | Ohio Cattleman | Winter 2026

at hay samples across the state and only had a few samples meet the TDN requirements for cows at calving time, and the weather played a big factor in those results. We have also seen a lot of pastures and hayfields that have been beaten up these past couple of years with the weather that we have experienced.

With many pastures and hayfields taking a beating recently, winter offers the best time to plan for our forages for the upcoming year. The first thing to do is to look back at how each field performed this past year, and if you have not tested the soil in the past three years, maybe start there. If your fertility is not where it should be, and you get it to where it needs to be, you could fix a lot. Now if fertility is where it needs to be and the fields did not produce for you, you may need to look at options like interseeding or doing a complete renovation. Interseeding can offer a lot by planting new forages directly into an existing pasture or hayfield to boost the stand’s quality, increase its diversity, and help fill in gaps in the existing stand. Complete renovation is for cases where the forage stand has been severely impacted, and it often provides the best chance for a productive and resilient forage stand for the future. Also remember that a lot can be solved with good grazing management practices. If you have been using good grazing management practices for years, you may not even be seeing problems. Grazing management can help control weeds, nutrient movement in fields, improve stand life, allow a longer grazing season, and more.

When spring comes rolling around, are you going to have much time to sit and think of what needs to be done? What if you have to reseed some fields? It can take time to get seed, equipment lined up and have the field ready to plant. Also, note the two times of the year that we recommend for seeding most forages is April or August. It can rain a lot in April and not much in August. August can be appealing but are we going to get rain to get that field established and make it through the winter?

Things like this are why decision making can be easier in the wintertime because there is more time to plan.

Also think about things like do I have enough feed to make it to when you can start grazing in the spring or do I have plans for managing through another drought. This is also the time of year that most look at their records for doing taxes, those records can help tell the story of the past year and may help guide you as well. Setting your goals does not have to be complicated.

As mentioned earlier, it might be as simple as wanting to improve pasture management, adjusting your calving window, or better record keeping.

Keep your goals realistic and have them somewhere where you will see them. Revisit these goals throughout the year to see how you are doing.

Winter might feel slow to you, but it can be one of the most valuable times of the year on your operation. A few hours spent when things are slow may save you when you have very little time to spare later.

Investing in Beef Promotion, Nutrition, Education & Research

CELEBRATING FARM TO SCHOOL

October was Farm to School Month, and the Ohio Beef Council (OBC) attended Minerva High School for a hydroponics presentation led by Minerva FFA students. The students shared how the lettuce they grow in the classroom makes its way to the school cafeteria, connecting their lessons directly to the lunch line.

Director of Food Service, Stacey Bettis, gave a behind-the-scenes tour of the cafeteria kitchen, where the head cooks were proudly serving local beef. The beef came from a steer purchased by Minerva Local School District Food and Nutrition Services at the Stark County Fair. The steer’s owner, Kynsie from Pero Farms, spoke about her passion for 4-H and how rewarding it was to see her efforts contribute to a nutritious school meal.

BURGERS BREAK ANOTHER RECORD!

On behalf of the Beef Checkoff, OBC was proud to partner with the Hospitality Institute of Ohio to sponsor the Annual Burger Battle.

Held on Oct. 28 at the Delaware County Fairgrounds in Delaware, the event brought together 170 Ohio ProStart and Ohio Hospitality CTSO students and 35 burger entries for the industry judges to sample.

It was an exciting day of creativity, competition, and, of course, incredible burgers—showcasing the talent of Ohio’s next generation of culinary stars.

OBC proudly served as the presenting sponsor of the 614 Burger & Beer Week, featuring mouthwatering beef burgers from over 40 Columbus area restaurants.

Restaurants reported a 10-20 percent increase in sales with the OBC logo present on event signage, billboards, and spotted on new media outlets. The week was about more than just delicious

Recently 19 third graders in Liz Van Evra’s class at St. Mary Catholic Elementary School in Lancaster explored the science and studied the societal aspects of beef cattle production. During their studies they talked about the importance of beef as an Ohio produced product, and its importance nationwide. The students were able to understand that there is a lot of beef needed to feed the world!

As the class discussed the presence of various natural resources in science and social studies, the students made

the connection that beef is indeed a resource that is needed to feed people.

With a few of Van Evra’s students from Fairfield County farms and having experience with farming and cattle, they were able to share their experiences with beef within the agriculture community.

While exploring the brochure Cooking With Beef for Kids that was provided by the beef council, the students talked about which recipes they would like to try with their parents at home. Next, they plan to explore the beef coloring and activity book Pasture to Plate.

Despite being the fourth most rapidly urbanizing county in Ohio, Fairfield County remains home to more than 13,000 beef cattle.

Ohio Cattlemen’s Association kicks off 2025-26 BEST Season

The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) Beef Exhibitor Show Total (BEST) program will kick off the 2025-2026 season with this year’s theme “Gettin Groovy with the BEST,” alongside its sponsoring partners. OCA appreciates the following partners whose investment helps make the BEST youth development program possible. BEST is a youth development program of the OCA that recognizes young beef exhibitors through a series of sanctioned shows. Youth who participate earn points for their placing at each show. Points are tabulated for cattle, showmanship, registered bred-and-owned animals, and Buckeye Breeder Series (Ohio’s bred, born and raised program). The BEST program also includes leadership opportunities, scholarships and community service.

Youth exhibitors earn points for participation in each sanctioned show and are recognized for their accomplishments at an end-of-season awards banquet.

changes for this season

The Novice division and Stockmanship program have been removed from the BEST program. After careful consideration, OCA has decided to remove the Novice division from the

BEST program to better align with the skill levels of the existing age divisions.

While the Novice program provided great benefit, we believe this change creates a more fair and consistent opportunity for all BEST exhibitors.

Moving forward, participants will compete in the appropriate age division and earn OCA cattle points as normal. Additionally, the Stockmanship division has been transitioned from the BEST program to the Ohio Beef Youth Council (OBYC). The Youth Council’s mission better aligns with the goals of the Stockmanship program, and this move allows OCA to broaden participation by inviting beef industry youth from across all spectrums.

Negative BVD is required at your first BEST show. To protect the health of all cattle exhibited through the BEST program, a negative Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD) test is required prior to an exhibitor’s first show of the season. Requiring this documentation at the start of the season ensures that every animal is tested and confirmed negative before entering the show environment.

An additional $5 entry fee for non-best participants. Participants who choose not to nominate their animal(s) for the BEST program will be required to pay an additional $5 per show ring entry fee. This helps cover the administrative costs of tracking and managing non-BEST exhibitors through the BEST program’s show entry software.

This year, Northern Lights Showcase will be held on Saturday, Jan. 31 only to help streamline the schedule and make participation more convenient for both exhibitors and their families.

BEST Program Requirements

Participants 8 years old as of Jan. 1, 2025, but not older than 21 years as of age as of Jan. 1, 2026, are eligible to accumulate OCA BEST points.

Participants must be Ohio residents with the exception of Buckeye Breeders Series (BBS) eligible cattle.

Those exhibiting BBS cattle are eligible to accumulate BEST points regardless of the state of residency.

Participants or the participant’s family must be current members of OCA. The OCA membership must be in the name of the BEST participant’s immediate family. OCA family memberships are $100 and will operate on a 12-month basis. Exhibitors showing cattle at a BEST-sanctioned show, but not participating in the BEST program, must also have an OCA membership.

A BEST nomination fee is also required for each animal a participant enters in the BEST program. The one-time $60 nomination fee allows the animal to accumulate points at any OCA BEST-sanctioned show. The nomination fee must be paid before the start of the show where the exhibitor plans to accumulate points.

Participants must be Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) certified to participate in the BEST program. BQA certification is available through inperson training at BEST shows, bqa.org, or yqca.org.

ALL cattle showing at a BESTsanctioned show in-state and outof-state MUST be tagged with an electronic identification (EID) ear tag before arriving at their first BEST show.

Buckeye Breeders Series (BBS)

BBS is Ohio’s premier bred, born, and raised division of BEST that rewards both exhibitors and breeders for their participation with registered steers and heifers from an Ohio seedstock breeder. This division will have a separate set of points to be accumulated for participants throughout the season. Out-of-state participants will be eligible for BEST only if they exhibit a BBS-eligible animal.

All exhibitors who plan on showing in the BBS program must complete the nomination form (available at www. ohiocattle.org) in order to receive points at their first show. BBS breeders must also be current OCA members for the cattle they bred to be eligible for points in the BEST program.

At the end of the season, BBS participants will be entered in a drawing for a year’s use of a livestock trailer, donated by M.H. EBY. BBS breeders will be entered in a drawing for a year’s use of a John Deere Gator, donated by Ag-Pro.

The opportunity came at a time of great uncertainty for so many.

The COVID-19 pandemic had just started and much of the world was shut down. Cattle producers like Andy and Tonya Lohr were having trouble finding places to harvest their animals in a timely manner.

That’s when a piece of property in downtown Bucyrus came up for sale, and the Lohrs knew it was the perfect fit for expanding their family operation. The old bratwurst processing facility could be converted into a custom butcher shop. As soon as Andy saw the facility, it was a done deal.

“We are thinkers. If something comes along, we don’t think about it for too long. We jump right in.

Sometimes there’s failure along the way and that’s how you learn.

Fortunately, that wasn’t the case when we bought the building,” Andy said.

Their daughter weighed in about the new business and thought having a retail component would be embraced by the community.

Increasingly, and especially during the pandemic, people were focused on buying their meat locally. It helped that the Lohrs had been selling freezer beef to friends and family for years.

In February 2021, Center Street Meat Co. opened its doors, selling everything from custom processed meat to hot sandwiches to salads.

The business is owned by Andy and Tonya, and their daughter, Jessica, manages the store and son, Jake, helps out both in the store and on the farm.

All of the store’s beef products come from the Lohrs’ family farm, about 5 miles away. The family runs a 150-head cow-calf operation on a farm started by Tonya’s grandfather decades ago. Andy grew up just down the road from their farm and has spent most of his life raising cattle, which started in 4-H. The family’s calves are kept with their momma cows for about 6 months and are grass fed until they’re

weaned. After that, they are grain finished. The Lohrs’ have two feedlots, and the newest was built last year. They do intensive grazing and put up temporary fencing so the cattle can graze on corn stalks in the winter.

Every week two or three cattle are harvested and delivered in quarters to the store where they hang for 10 days until they are broken down into smaller cuts.

“Sometimes we have to buy feeder cattle to keep up with demand at the store,” Tonya said. “Cattle prices are high now which is resulting in scary times for the industry. By cutting out the middleman, we’ve been able to keep our margins not as tight.

We’re also diversified with crops so that helps.”

Tonya, who is a hairdresser, owns and runs a full-service salon in Bucyrus while Andy works on the farm full-time, managing the cattle and crops.

“Behind every good farmer is a wife who works in town,” he laughed when describing Tonya.

Andy, who was recognized in 2004 as the Ohio Cattlemen’s Young Cattleman of the Year, is active in the cattle industry. He’s on OCA’s board of directors and previously was vice president for the association. He’s also a past president of the Crawford County Cattlemen’s and has been a township trustee for about 20 years. The Lohrs’ newest honor is the Ohio Cattlemen’s Commercial Cattlemen of the Year award.

“We’re very humbled and honored that the Ohio Cattlemen’s would consider us for this award,” Andy said.

Future plans for the family are to keep an eye out for more pasture land so they can grow their herd and stop buying extra feeders to keep up with demand at the store.

“We’d like to grow our meat market but we need to be able to keep up with demand. You have

to make sure you’re focusing on the quality of the product. If we’re able to supply all the meat, then we can definitely control our margins more,” Andy said.

Andy, who had a stint as an electrician after college for a couple of years, loves working on the farm with the cattle and is happy that the couple’s children and grandchildren love visiting and helping out on the farm.

“We’re very blessed to be where we’re at. A lot of this would never have happened if it weren’t for family and neighbor Tom Shawk who farmed with my dad and had me take over his cow-calf operation,” Andy said.

Tonya praised the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association for its advocacy and networking locally and nationally.

“The Ohio Beef Council has been huge in helping get us brochures and recipes to pass out at the beef market. They’re such wonderful marketing tools,” she said. “I really appreciate having a network of likeminded people and camaraderie.”

The couple feel confident that the family will remain involved in agriculture, whether it’s on the farm or in the store. Jessica and her husband, Mark, have an 8-year-old son, Eli, who has two heifers and is planning to participate in some of this year’s BEST shows. Their 6-year-old daughter, Anna, loves running around on the farm and is in charge of the farm cats. Jake’s wife, Kristi, loves being hands-on with the cow herd when she isn’t too tied up taking care of their five-month-old daughter, Mallory.

“It ’s not about the almighty dollar. It ’s about farming simply because you love it.”

2025 National Cattlemen’s Beef Association President-Elect Copenhaver is a fifth-generation cattleman whose family dates to the 1850s in Washington County, Virginia. Copenhaver currently manages his family’s stocker operation in southwest Virginia with his son, Will. Copenhaver was an agriculture loan officer for 38 years and served his clients who were primarily cattle producers in five East Coast states.

Copenhaver served as NCBA Vice President, chair and vice chair of the Policy Division, chair and vice chair of NCBA’s Tax & Credit Committee, and chair and vice chair of NCBA’s International Trade Committee. He is a past president of the Virginia Cattlemen’s Association and past chairman of the Virginia Cattle Foundation.

Copenhaver graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in animal science. He has been married to his wife, Jodi, for more than 35 years, and they have three grown children, Brad, Will and Jaymee, and one granddaughter.

CELEBRATING LAST YEAR’S CHARACTER TRAIT WINNERS & ENCOURAGING NEW NOMINATIONS Each year, the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) and Weaver Leather Livestock partner through the BEST program to recognize exceptional leaders—individuals of all ages who consistently go above and beyond. Across various character trait categories, we seek out those who are striving to better themselves, lift up the people around them, make the BEST shows more enjoyable, and ultimately better the beef and agriculture industry.

Last year’s character traits were Motivation, Development, Attitude, and Determination, and four outstanding youth rose to the top in each category.

Brody Bolen, Ashland County received the Determination character trait award. Brody earned this award through his dedication and involvement in multiple programs, including showmanship, stockmanship, and Bred & Owned.

Each weekend, he aimed to place at the top of his classes across all divisions and remained committed to all of them—never prioritizing one over the other. Brody’s determination goes beyond competition; he consistently sets goals for himself and works tirelessly to achieve them, whether perfecting his skills in the barn, assisting others, or learning new techniques.

Audrey Motts, Stark County was named the Attitude character trait recipient. Audrey received this award for always bringing a positive outlook to the ring—showing up with a smile, encouraging her peers, and staying upbeat even when things don’t go as planned. Whether she was helping a younger exhibitor, congratulating a competitor, or simply offering a friendly word, Audrey continually demonstrated how a great attitude can 24 | Ohio Cattleman | Winter 2026

influence the entire barn.

Peyton Helsinger, Preble County was awarded the Development character trait. Peyton showed tremendous growth from the beginning of the season to the end, exemplifying what it means to learn, improve, and rise to new challenges. She studied her siblings and older exhibitors closely, using their example to build her skills.

Peyton consistently applied herself, asking questions, seeking feedback, and practicing diligently to refine her abilities. Her dedication showed that true development comes from commitment, observation, and a willingness to push beyond comfort zones.

Looking ahead, the 2025–26 character traits are Focus, Integrity, Patience, and Respect. Nominations are now open and will be accepted

OCA and Weaver encourage all those involved with the BEST program to take time to recognize youth who demonstrate these traits by nominating a deserving individual.

Each nomination helps highlight the efforts of young people who work hard, lead by example, and contribute positively to the BEST shows and the beef and agriculture industry.

In addition, Weaver will provide a wrapped showbox as the grand prize in a drawing that includes all character trait nominees. The drawing will take place at the OCA BEST Awards Banquet in May 2026.

OCA HOSTS SUCCESSFUL REPLACEMENT FEMALE SALE The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) held their 13th annual Replacement Female Sale on Nov. 28 at the Muskingum Livestock Auction Company in Zanesville, Ohio. A near standing room only crowd was on hand and online to bid on 73 high quality females in the sale. The sale represented an excellent opportunity for cow-calf producers to add quality females with documented breeding and health records to their herds.

Buyers evaluated 73 lots of bred heifers, bred cows, and cow-calf pairs at the auction.

The sale included 59 lots of bred heifers that averaged $4,115, 3 cow-calf pairs sold for $4,533, and 11 lots of bred cows that averaged $4,372. The 73 total lots grossed a record $317,000 for an overall average of $4,342. The females sold to buyers from Ohio and Michigan. Col. Ron Kreis served as the auctioneer.

Sales prices were significantly higher year over year driven by current cattle prices and the quality of the females offered, as the 2025 sale represented a $1,437 per head price increase over the 2024 sale. Demand was very strong for quality females as 60 lots brought over $4,000, and 11 of those

sold for $5,000 or greater. Prices remained steady throughout the auction with many buyers sweeping the ring at two or three head at a time.

Atterholt Farms of Jeromesville, Ohio consigned the top selling cows. The Lots 9,10,11,12 registered Angus females all sold for $4,600. Buyers of the Atterholt cows were Jay Writsel of Orient, Ohio; Zackery Jones of Freeport,Ohio; and David Uhl of Dundee, Michigan.

Crum Cattle Company of Wooster, Ohio sold the high selling pair, Lot 29 to Goshen Run Farms of Stockport, Ohio for $4,600.

Three bred heifers topped the sale at $5,200. Nobleland Farms of Caldwell, Ohio sold the Lots 54 and 56 registered Angus females to Matthew Vollmar of Kingston, Ohio. Dillion Simmentals of Newark, Ohio sold the Lot 30 purebred Simmental heifer to Clay Carpenter of Barnesville, Ohio.

As in past years, the sale truly was an excellent opportunity for both buyers and sellers. Buyers were able to improve their herds by adding high quality females with known genetic and health backgrounds.

Sellers were able to capitalize on historic high prices for breeding cattle, driven by record highs in the cattle market throughout the past year. The overall sentiment is that there is some optimism that feeder cattle prices will remain strong as cow herd inventory remains at 60+ year low.

2026 Replacement Female Sale Consignments will be due October 1, 2026.

BEEF BRIEFS OHIO CATTLEMEN’S ASSOCIATION ENDORSES VIVEK RAMASWAMY FOR GOVERNOR

The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) endorsed Vivek Ramaswamy for Governor, marking another major boost in the campaign’s momentum among Ohio’s farmers and agricultural leaders.

“Vivek Ramaswamy shares the values that matter most to our beef family farmers and his policies align with OCA’s longstanding policy. He understands the challenges farmers face every day, and we’re proud to endorse him for governor,” said Mark Goecke, President of the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association. “It’s clear Vivek understands the issues we care about, from the preservation of our Constitutional freedoms and private property rights to the need for controlled government spending and limited government intervention in business, and we’ll do everything we can to help propel him to victory in 2026.”

Since 1951, OCA has worked to promote Ohio’s beef cattle industry, which includes cow/calf, feeder, stocker, seedstock, and dairy producers.

Today, OCA represents more than 2,000 beef family farms that raise the majority of the state’s 1.2 million head of cattle across all 88 counties.

“Just as agriculture anchors our economy, OCA’s more than 2,000 members anchor communities throughout rural Ohio, and I’m honored to have their endorsement,” said Vivek Ramaswamy.

“These farmers—many from families who have spent generations building this state—reflect the very best of Ohio.

I value their perspective and their many contributions to our economy, and I am eager to work with them to make sure Ohio cattlemen’s brightest days are still ahead.”

This latest endorsement further solidifies the powerful agricultural coalition forming behind Vivek’s campaign. In August, Ohio’s Corn and Wheat Growers made history by endorsing in a governor’s race for the first time in more than 30 years. Now, with today’s announcement, these endorsements together represent an unmatched show of unity from the producers who power Ohio’s farm economy.

KIM HERMAN NAMED BEEF BARN CO-DIRECTOR FOR THE OHIO STATE FAIR

Herman has been a member of the beef barn staff for a number of years and brings a wealth of experience to the role.

Congressman Dave Taylor hosted a farmer roundtable discussion at United Producers Hillsboro with producers from Brown and Highland County to hear their priorities and share how he is advocating for their needs in Congress. OCA participated in the meeting to address trade and market issues in the cattle industry.
