This year, our nation will celebrate its 250th anniversary, a milestone that invites us to look back at the generations of Americans who built this country through hard work, resilience, and a commitment to feeding their communities. Cattle producers have been part of that story from the very beginning. For centuries, cattle have grazed the landscapes of our nation and our state, providing food, livelihoods, and a way of life that remains deeply rooted in Ohio today.

That heritage continues to evolve and thrive. Today, cattle producers are experiencing historically strong cattle prices, creating opportunities that many in our industry have worked years to achieve. While every operation’s situation is unique, strong market fundamentals and continued consumer demand for beef remind us that the product we produce remains highly valued both at home and around the world.

Closer to home, there is plenty of excitement within our own association. This summer marks the completion of the first full year of the Ohio Beef Youth Council. What began as a vision to develop future leaders has already exceeded expectations. These young men and women have represented our industry with professionalism, enthusiasm, and a genuine passion for beef. As we welcome a new leadership team, we look forward to watching this program continue to grow and create opportunities for Ohio’s next generation of advocates and leaders.

The future is also taking shape at the Ohio State Fairgrounds. The new and improved facilities represent an investment not only in our state fair but in the future of Ohio agriculture. These enhancements will create countless opportunities for cattle producers, exhibitors, youth, and consumers to connect and showcase the very best our industry has to offer for years to come.

And speaking of opportunities, I hope you’ll join us later this summer for another memorable Cattlemen’s Gala. Beyond being a wonderful evening of fellowship and celebration, the Gala helps fund scholarships that support the future leaders of our industry. Every dollar invested in these young people helps ensure Ohio’s cattle industry remains strong for generations to come.

As cattlemen and cattlewomen, we often focus on the challenges in front of us. That’s part of the job. But this summer, I encourage each of us to take a moment to appreciate the opportunities surrounding us as well. We are part of an industry with a rich heritage, strong markets, dedicated leaders, promising young people, and a future worth investing in.

As we celebrate America’s Semiquincentennial—our nation’s 250th birthday—we are living through a truly historic moment. This once-in-alifetime anniversary is a privilege worth recognizing and appreciating, because none of us will have the opportunity to mark it again.

The cattle industry is also experiencing some historic moments that are shaping its future for years to come. Producers are seeing exceptionally strong cattle prices while navigating the opportunities and pressures that come with these unprecedented times. Across the country, we are raising some of the highest-quality beef ever produced, and consumers continue to show their confidence through repeat purchases.

As it’s been said, in many ways, the story of American beef reflects the story of America itself. It is built upon resilience, hard work, and the determination of producers who show up every day, in every season, to care for their cattle and their land. That commitment has carried the beef community through challenges, strengthened consumer trust, and helped keep high-quality beef as part of our shared future. And much of this progress in beef quality and consumer demand is the direct result of decades of work funded by the Beef Checkoff.

Most farmers often feel like they are running behind, and this year’s weather has only added to that pressure. In our part of the state, there has been a lot of poor quality first-cutting hay made. A great deal has changed since America’s last major birthday celebration, including the faster pace of everyday life and the constant demands on our time. That is all the more reason to pause, look around, and recognize the significance of this moment. Even in a busy season, this milestone deserves our time and attention.

I can still remember parts of America’s 200th birthday celebration in 1976— though I was very young at the time. For a statewide birthday celebration hosted by agricultural organizations, my mom made colonial dresses and bonnets for my sister, herself, and me to wear. I still have those dresses tucked away in a chest, a small reminder of how meaningful that memory felt even then.

And speaking of creating memories, the excitement is growing as the State of Ohio nears completion of its major investment on the Ohio Expo Center grounds. The 2026 Ohio State Fair will debut new buildings, landscapes, an outdoor amphitheater and even an Ohio-themed, hand-carved carousel.

Describing it simply does not do it justice, so you will have to make plans to see it for yourself.

Agriculture’s new imAGine Ag exhibit will open in the new Ohio Agriculture Center on the fairgrounds. The 75,000-square-foot exhibit will give fairgoers an immersive look at modern agriculture and the families who work every day to provide the food, fiber and renewable fuel all Ohioans rely upon. Visitors to imAGine Ag will explore topics ranging from weather and agricultural technology to animal care and crop management.

The Ohio Agriculture Center will also include the air-conditioned Taste of Ohio Café, home to Ohio’s commodity food stands, including the OCA Steak Barn. OCA looks forward to opening the Steak Barn and your help volunteering for a shift while visiting the fair would be greatly appreciated.

Additionally, OCA is planning to mark the significance of this year with some new commemorative t-shirt designs, among other unique items, at the Beef Store beside the putt putt course in the Voinovich building. As you are making plans to celebrate our country’s 250th birthday, be sure to include a family trip to the Ohio State Fair. See you there!

Today’s Challenges, Yesterday’s Memories, Tomorrow’s Future

of Georgia and Florida being some of the driest areas. Ohio has mostly received above average rainfall since April and depending on who you ask that has been both a blessing and a curse.

It’s that steady rainfall that has slowed planting progress and has made making first cutting hay a challenge once again. I know locally, first cutting hay is about halfway complete. As I write this, I would like to be mowing hay but with rain in the forecast every other day, making dry hay isn’t favorable. I have spent a lot of time in recent years discussing hay quality. Once again, we are offering a forage testing program through Extension so that producers will have a forage analysis to make a nutrition management decision this fall should quality be subpar as it was in 2025.

As I travel around, especially southern Ohio, hay and pasture quantities are also highly variable. The grass hay crop on average is 50-60% of normal. Warm weather in April led to earlier than average forage maturity. What’s old is new again.

On May 15, I began my 10th year with Ohio State University Extension.

If there is one thing that I have learned during my time in Extension, it is that things come in cycles. History tends to repeat itself, sometimes over multiple generations, or every few years, and even annually.

After the drought of 2024, I find myself taking a weekly look at the Drought Monitor. This week 19.15% of the continental U.S. is experiencing D3-D4 drought conditions, the highest amount since July of 2022. Back in 2022 and into 2023 the drought was mainly in what we think of as cow country, the southwest and the central plains. Looking forward, this year being the 250th birthday of the United States, it is a good time to reflect on the impact the cattle industry has had on our great nation.

Beginning as sustenance, farming in the earliest days of our country to today’s globalized food system, beef production has been far more than a dietary staple in the United States. It has been a driver of expansion, economic growth, and cultural identity. The story of American beef is, in many ways, the story of America itself.

Early American farmers relied on cattle for food and draft stock. As the country moved west, the cattle industry was able to grow. From cattle drives to train cars, meat packing was key in building many of the large cities in the Midwest and Plains.

Modern feedlots made beef production more efficient as specialization was able to happen across the industry. On the cow side, genetic improvement has led to the high quality product we enjoy today.

Today we produce more pounds of beef per cow than ever before, a testament to research and adoption of current technologies. Providing safe, wholesome beef to customers around the globe is something to be proud of.

That said, it is not the time to become too comfortable in what we do. Changing consumer preferences, unprecedented weather, market volatility, technology (including artificial intelligence), and national farm policy will all impact the future of beef cattle production in the United States.

As an industry we are well positioned to take on the challenges of the next decade and beyond. I’m excited for it.

It’s not only the cattle, it’s the people that come together to make the beef industry one of the strongest sectors in agriculture. Happy hay making this summer and as always, Eat Beef !

Watering Cattle: Quantity and Quality

By John Yost- OSU Assistant Professor & Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources Educator, Noble County, Ohio The last two summers have made it very clear how important water is to beef cattle operations. The severe drought left many with dead pastures and compounded the problem with creeks and wells running dry, which required some producers to purchase and transport water for the herd.

The lack of drinking water hasn’t been a normal concern in our part of the world and historically we may have taken water availability for granted. I think it is safe to say that even those of us in academia haven’t given livestock water consumption the level of attention it deserves. Some of that is now changing as we develop new technologies allowing us to monitor individual water intake and can observe cattle behavior as it relates to water.

We know that proper water intake is critical to animal health and welfare. As a general guideline, beef cattle require about one gallon of water per 100 pounds of body weight. During the last trimester of gestation, a cow’s water intake increases approximately 30 percent, and their estimated need is two gallons of water per 100 pounds of body weight. Additional factors such as dry matter intake, ambient temperature and humidity, animal size, production level, and water quality all influence daily consumption.

Cattle typically drink between two and five times per day. Each visit may last from one to four minutes, during which time they can consume approximately two gallons per minute. From these facts it is suggested that waterers be at least 18 inches high and allow 3.5 inches of linear drinking space per head. The waterer should have a refill rate of two gallons per minute for every animal that can drink at one time.

The biggest question is how much water we need to provide in relation to herd size, the location of the waterer, and if cattle behavior influences this decision.

The standard recommendation has been that water sources should be located within 700 to 900 feet of the cattle.

Research from the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Brazil (Coimbra et al., 2012) showed that cattle drink more often and consume more water when the waterer is placed within the grazing paddock verses when it is placed in the corridor connecting grazing areas. When the waterer was within the grazing paddock the researchers did not observe a difference in behaviors, but when the waterer was in the corridor dominant cows were observed to drink more water than the subordinate animals.

We have confirmed this behavior in preliminary research conducted at The Ohio State University where subordinate animals exhibited dramatically reduced water intake when the herd had to travel longer distances to reach the waterer and the number of head that could drink was limited to one at a time. We hypothesize that the instinct to stay with the herd is stronger than their desire to drink.

We believe as the dominant animals drink what they want, and return to the grazing area, the subordinate animals will follow. Unfortunately, we haven’t gotten to the point where we can give firm recommendations, but producers should monitor drinking behavior within the herd and provide additional waterers based on the size of the herd and the distance they need to travel to reach the waterer.

On average, one water fountain can serve about 35 head of cattle.

Water quality is equally important and can be categorized into three primary areas: chemical, bacterial, and nitrate content. Most water sources fall near a neutral pH of 7.0, but values below 5.5 or above 8.5 can cause digestive upset. The thresholds for total salinity (salt content) vary depending on the stage of production.

A soluble salt concentration less than

4999 milligrams per liter is satisfactory for all cattle. A level of 5000 to 6999 mg/L begins to present a risk to pregnant and lactating cows. When concentrations reach 7000 mg/L, or higher, there is a significant health risk, and it is not recommended to provide this to your animals Bacterial contamination is typically a greater concern for surface water sources such as ponds or slow-moving streams.

While mature ruminants tend to be more tolerant, young animals are more susceptible to waterborne pathogens.

Routine cleaning of waterers helps reduce microbial risks, but the water source should be evaluated. It is recommended that the total bacterial load be less than 200 organisms per 100 milliliters and the fecal coliform count be less than 1 per 100 milliliters.

Ground water can be a source of excess nitrates in drought conditions. Water containing less than 100 parts per million nitrates is considered safe for all livestock.

Levels between 100 and 300 parts per million generally do not pose a direct risk; however, they can contribute to toxicity when combined with high-nitrate forages.

Water exceeding 300 parts per million nitrates is not recommended due to the risk of nitrate poisoning.

Ensuring adequate water availability and quality is one of the most impactful and often overlooked management decisions in a beef operation. Regular water testing is a critical management practice. Samples should be collected from each water source and tested periodically.

By paying close attention to water intake needs, system design, and water quality, producers can support animal health, improve performance, and enhance overall herd productivity.

CONNECTING OHIO’S YOUTH WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO DEVELOP THEIR PASSION FOR THE BEEF INDUSTRY

The Next Generation of Beef Leadership

Welcome to the newest column in the Ohio Cattleman. The Ohio Beef Youth Council (OBYC) is an educational initiative designed to connect young Ohioans with the beef cattle industry and develop future agricultural leaders. OBYC offers an extensive lineup of opportunities for members to get involved, including educational seminars, leadership development programs, industry tours, networking events, contests, and hands-on learning experiences.

Through these opportunities, members are able to expand their industry knowledge, build valuable connections, and develop skills that will benefit them both within and beyond the beef industry.

We are excited to share our next OBYC event, which will take place on Aug. 15, The Evaluation Classic. This hands-on opportunity allows youth to work directly with industry stakeholders, complete live cattle evaluations, and gain realworld beef industry insight through phenotypic analysis, EPDs, and performance data. Participants will have the opportunity to work alongside Ohio State ATI livestock judging coach Seth Ebert and the judging team from The Ohio State University ATI while sharpening their cattle evaluation skills.

Attendees will learn what to look for in both live cattle evaluation and on-paper classes, as well as how to properly communicate and 12 | Ohio Cattleman | Summer Issue 2026

defend their decisions through oral reasons.

In addition to the educational component, participants will gain exposure to different segments of the beef industry through exclusive behind-the-scenes tours. We will depart from the OCA office via chartered bus with stops at Maplecrest Farms in Hillsboro and Raines Farms in Seaman. These visits will provide valuable insight into cattle genetics, seedstock production, and the many career opportunities available within the beef industry. Spots are limited, so make sure to register early to secure your place in this unique experience.

OBYC will also be introducing a new points program encouraging participants to not only compete in contests but also be active beef advocates. Participants can now earn points for activities such as sharing beef advocacy on social media, competing in contests, participating in affiliated events like FFA Meats Judging, attending educational programs, volunteering at industry events, and many more opportunities. This is designed to recognize and reward members who are actively involved in promoting the beef industry while developing their leadership skills and industry knowledge.

I, alongside my teammates, would also like to make a special thank

you to Ryan Bowsher as he has just retired as the very first chair of OBYC. His hard work, leadership, and dedication have helped this organization grow and thrive since the beginning. We are very proud of all he has accomplished and are excited to see the positive impact he will continue to make in the future.

Congratulations to Leah Hamilton, Addie Dennis, Wyatt Osborn, Daniel Stacy, and Ava Egbert on their selection as members of the OBYC leadership team. We look forward to seeing their ideas, passion, and leadership help guide the organization and create new opportunities for youth involved in Ohio’s beef industry.

As we look ahead to another exciting year, the Ohio Beef Youth Council remains committed to providing meaningful opportunities for youth to learn, grow, and become advocates for the beef industry. We are grateful for the support of our members, volunteers, and industry partners who make these programs possible.

We encourage all interested youth to get involved, attend upcoming events, and take advantage of the many opportunities available through OBYC. We look forward to seeing both familiar and new faces at our events throughout the year.

The Ohio Beef Counciil s proud to support Ohio Farm Bureau’s new imAGine Ag exhibit, debuting at the 2026 Ohio State Fair.

Located within the new Ohio Agriculture Center at the Ohio Expo Center & State Fairgrounds, the 75,000-square-foot exhibit will give fairgoers an immersive look at modern agriculture and the families who work tirelessly every day to provide the food, fiber and renewable fuel all Ohioans rely upon.

Visitors to imAGine Ag will explore topics ranging from weather and agricultural technology to animal care and crop management. The experience also highlights career opportunities in agriculture, provides opportunities to engage directly with farmers, and showcases the many people, partnerships and processes involved in bringing food from the farm to the dinner table.

Key topics in agriculture will be highlighted in seven anchor exhibits: Storied Seasons will take fairgoers through a year in the life of Ohio farm families in an • immersive sensory experience.

Seasons of Innovation tells the story of agriculture through various eras.

• In addition to imAGine Ag, the Ohio Agriculture Center, presented by Nationwide, will include the Taste of Ohio Cafe, Ohio Proud Showcase, the Ohio Veterinary Medical Association Animal Life & Learning Center, and horticulture exhibits and competitions.

The imAGine Ag exhibit is made possible through Anchor Partners whose significant investments brought this interactive experience to life: Nationwide, Farm Credit Mid-America, Ohio Department of Agriculture, Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, Bob Evans Farms and Ohio Farm Bureau Foundation. imAGine Ag is a partnership with many industry and commodity partners whose contributions extended far beyond financial support. Their subject matter experts worked hand-in-hand with Ohio Farm Bureau to curate and design the authentic educational content displayed across the exhibit.

Genetic Insights for Smarter Herd Rebuilding

By Lane Geiss, Beef Genetics Techincal Service Manager, Zoetis Few phrases are more frustrating to hear than “that’s just how we’ve always done it.” In today’s cattle market, the shortterm effects of raising cattle the way we always have may not be all that negative, but the long-term effects of sticking with the status quo may no longer be viable in an industry where we are being asked to do more with less. Status quo in the commercial cow-calf business isn’t driven by stubbornness, but rather a lack of access to more sophisticated methods.

The good news is the industry is primed like never before to deliver solutions that enable producers to be more sophisticated and profitable as we face a potential herd rebuild. The question is: how can producers leverage current market success to invest in technologies that set them up for success in the coming years?

Genetic improvement is a key objective all cattle producers should consider in their herd rebuild strategy. While genetic selection has always been a consideration for cow-calf producers, the methods by which they capitalize on genetic improvement have historically been limited. While buying elite sires remains foundational to genetic improvement, recent advancements in genetic testing and evaluation now allow commercial producers access to expected progeny differences (EPDs) and economic indexes on candidate replacement females to make more informed selection decisions.

During the last major herd rebuild, genomics was just beginning to integrate into national cattle evaluations. Since then, the accuracy of genomic predictions for commercial females has significantly improved, and many resources once limited to seedstock producers are now accessible to commercial cow-calf producers.

For decades, genetic improvement for commercial producers has been driven through buying genetically superior bulls from seedstock producers—often informed by expected progeny differences (EPDs). Though this has led to favorable genetic progress in commercial cow herds across a variety of traits — notably improved calving ease, growth, marbling, and carcass weights — that progress

was somewhat hampered because the documented genetic merit of commercial cow herds was largely unknown.

Genetic progress and related advancements in production efficiency can be accelerated when selection and breeding decisions are empowered by genetic predictions for both seedstock bulls as well as candidate commercial replacement females. Most commercial herds, however, still select replacement heifers by sorting off the runts and choosing the more phenotypically appealing, larger-framed, older animals.

This usually means the “keeps” are the oldest, highest-growth heifers in a contemporary group, but with unknown genetic merit for other traits such as cow fertility, sensible cow size, feed requirements, feed efficiency, and carcass merit transmitted to feeder cattle progeny.

Recent advancements in commercial replacement heifer genetic evaluations have opened new opportunities for cowcalf producers to be more informed about selection decisions. So, what does this look like for producers?

For bull selection, the goal remains the same—buy genetically superior bulls—but genomically enhanced EPDs can add confidence in those decisions.

Genomically enhanced EPDs can provide more accurate estimates of a young sire’s genetic merit before progeny data are available, giving producers greater confidence that a bull’s genetic merit matches the predictions. Buying GE-EPD informed bulls is still paramount.

For heifer selection, genomic predictions can help identify genetic merit for traits related to profitability that otherwise go under the radar when selecting on size and weight. Producers only need to collect a DNA sample. Genetic service providers will then evaluate that heifer’s DNA along with other information sources to return genetic predictions for many of the same traits cow-calf producers use in bull selection.

Beyond individual animal predictions, genomic testing can also verify or discover parentage, which is especially valuable in multi-sire pasture situations.

Additionally, producers can screen animals for known genetic conditions (coat color, polled status, etc.) and potential genetic defects, creating the ability to make informed decisions that minimize the spread of undesirable traits through a cow herd. Genomic breed composition is another increasingly useful application, providing a reliable breakdown of an animal’s breed influence without the cumbersome record-keeping of pedigree tracking. As crossbreeding and composite programs grow more sophisticated, this information enables more targeted mating strategies to maximize heterosis and help producers take full advantage of breed complementarity.

The more you know about your heifer’s genetic potential, the more precisely you can buy bulls that accentuate herd strengths and address deficiencies.

Commercial producers can now make more informed female selection and management decisions based on individual animal genetic predictions and index solutions, more easily manage crossbreeding programs, identify and control undesirable genetic conditions, and more accurately manage pedigrees and bull batteries. This is how the beef industry can do more with less, by improving the genetic potential and productivity of their herds more comprehensively and efficiently than ever before.

Genomic insights are but one piece of a holistic beef enterprise. While they offer powerful decision support on a herd’s genetics, success in beef production still relies on integrating these resources with sound management practices, nutrition protocols, and proper stewardship. During a herd rebuild, there is no better time to include genetic insights in your selection decisions and set your cow herd up for long-term success.

MEET THE SUMMER INTERNS OCA and the Ohio Beef Council (OBC) welcomed two new interns to the team this summer, Malainy Boes and Landyn Scheetz. Together they will work on various projects, attend events, visit producers across the state, and work at the beef store during the 2026 Ohio State Fair.

Landyn Scheetz is from Stark County, where her passion for agriculture began on her family’s small farm. She grew up exhibiting a variety of livestock species through 4-H and developed a particular interest in cattle, competing in the OCA BEST program.

As a recent graduate of Ohio State ATI, she earned an Associate of Science degree in Animal Biosciences. Scheetz is excited to continue her education this fall at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

Outside of academics, she has been involved in livestock judging and other collegiate organizations.

Scheetz also enjoys spending time with friends and family and is passionate about continuing to expand her knowledge of the agriculture industry.

Malainy Boes is a junior at The Ohio State University majoring in Agricultural Communication with a minor in Agribusiness. Growing up on her family’s dairy farm in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, sparked her interest in developing an educated 16 | Ohio Cattleman | Summer Issue 2026

voice that she can use to support the industry.

Boes has been actively involved in FFA, recently concluding her year of service as the Ohio FFA State Sentinel. While attending Ohio State ATI, she found her place in student organizations such as the Agricultural Communicators, Educators, and Leaders of Tomorrow (ACELT).

In her free time, Boes enjoys traveling and working on the family farm.

She is excited to continue growing as a leader and learn alongside the OCA and OBC team this summer.

About 10 years ago, Jerry Dixon was asked by a friend on the board of the Licking County Cattlemen’s Association to attend a meeting.

Afterwards, he said “I’m not coming to a meeting just to come to meetings. What are we going to do here?” he recalls saying.

The comment wasn’t meant to be mean spirited – it was meant to spark action. He felt the group should be more active and out in the community to raise awareness about beef and agriculture. There was one problem. The group was strapped for money.

“All of the money we had was tied up for our scholarship program, which was a good thing, but anytime somebody asked us to participate in something, we didn’t have the cash to do much. As you know, cash is king,” said Jerry, a hobby farmer who raises black Angus cows.

The group had tried fundraisers in the past but after all the time and energy was put into it, not a lot of money was made. Then the COVID-19 pandemic happened and Jerry found himself with a lot of time on his hands. Retired from working sales for 35 years, he sat down with pencil to paper and started making calculations on what type of money the county association could make if it had a concession trailer at the Hartford Fair. With the help of the Fairfield County cattlemen’s, the group found a food trailer to lease and two years later it started reaching its financial goals.

“We were now in a position to give back financially to the community,” said Jerry who eventually became president of the Licking County Cattlemen’s.

Later on, the group bought a cargo trailer and converted it into

a food stand. They were now in business.

“There was actually talk about 10 years ago of dissolving the group because there wasn’t a lot of interest back then. But then they really started to get things going again, and it’s exciting to see how it’s evolved.

We’ve really been trending upward over the past five years,” said Ian Van Kirk, who grew up in the county and runs a seedstock operation as well as works for the Ohio Department of Agriculture in feed inspection.

Jerry got Ian, a Hartford Fair board member, involved with the county cattlemen after learning that he wanted to start a beef barn improvement committee.

Jerry pointed out that starting a committee that accepts financial donations can be tricky and requires a lot of paperwork. “Why not just join the cattlemen’s, make a subcommittee and use our tax ID number?” he remembers suggesting.

The suggestion was accepted and before Ian knew it, he was involved with the cattlemen’s association and eventually became the group’s president.

“The whole goal is to get younger people involved to keep things going. That’s the future,” Jerry said.

Right now, the future is bright for the Licking County Cattlemen’s, which was honored with OCA’s Outstanding County Award. The board consists of a president, vice president, secretary, treasurer and seven board members, who represent about 70 household members. Ian described the board and members as

being active, which is key, especially since it takes a lot of manpower to run the food stand at the fair held each August. The fair runs seven days and there’s three shifts a day to run the food stand with four people working each shift.

“This isn’t possible without all the volunteers that we have. They all show up with some doing multiple shifts, and they do a wonderful job,” Jerry said.

Local beef is the star at the food stand: burgers, ribeye sandwiches, beef and noodles and the “beef sundae,” which is mashed potatoes, corn and shredded beef with a red cherry on top. For the last three years, a local family has donated a whole steer for the food stand.

“We try to serve the food as quickly as we can so we can get more repeat business. Nobody likes to wait in line. We’ve priced it that a plain burger is the same as one with all the condiments,” Jerry said. “It’s been a good success and generated a lot of revenue.”

Funds from the food stand have been used to give back to the community. The county association has donated money this year to build a new permanent shelterhouse for fairgoers to enjoy their food out of the sun and rain.

The group has also donated $2,500 for new fans in the dairy feeder building and bought a new side panel divider for the steer pool event. Scholarships are awarded yearly to the fair’s queen and princess.

“It’s important to show up in the community,” Ian said. “This year we’re awarding three $100 scholarships to individuals showing at state fair or junior nationals to help offset costs and doing 22 $100 sponsorships for 4-H camp. We really want to be more involved with 4-H families.”

Three years ago, the local cattlemen’s association started holding a ball, which is usually held in March, and features dinner, entertainment, a speaker and the awarding of the queen and princess scholarships.

Another popular event is the annual Croton Nationals Open Steer & Heifer Show now in its fifth year. The show draws about 175 head from all over Ohio and other states. Proceeds from the show will pay for a shade structure over a fairgrounds wash station.

“We’re here to give back to our community and promote beef within Licking County,” Ian said.

“A lot of development is going on around us right now, and it’s important for us to be present in the community.”

Both Ian and Jerry said they were surprised and honored that Licking County Cattlemen’s received the county of the year award.

“We’re extremely proud,” Ian said. “The amount of members and interest has really grown over the last five years. It’s an honor to be recognized for this award and that people are noticing us trying to do better and promoting beef in the county and beyond.”

“They really help bring everyone together so it’s all one big community,” he said.

Ten leaders have been selected to serve on the Ohio Beef Youth Council (OBYC) Leadership Team. Five members of the leadership team will begin their second year term as officers; the other five individuals will learn alongside the officers, serving a two-year term.

The 2026-27 OBYC officer team includes Chair Natalie Williams, Union County; Vice Chair Soda Kiser, Cuyahoga County; Public Relations Director Ella Martin, Seneca County; Leadership Development Director, Madalynn Dunham, Champaign County; and Education and Commercial Programs Director Lauren Heimerl, Licking County.

The five new members of the leadership team are Addie Dennis, Fairfield County; Ava Egbert, Auglaize County; Leah Hamilton, Tuscarawas County; Wyatt Osborn, Highland County; and Daniel Stacy, Clark County.

Members of the leadership team will assist in planning OBYC events and programs that will serve beef industry youth across Ohio to equip them with tools to become more effective industry leaders and inspire them to continue their engagement in Ohio’s beef industry as adults.

As summer grilling season approached, the Ohio Beef Council brought women together for a memorable Girls Who Grill event—proving that a little rain can’t put out the fire. Participants embraced the weather while building confidence at the grill and sharpening their beef know-how.

The Ohio Beef Youth Council wrapped up its first successful year with an end-ofyear celebration honoring the dedication, leadership, and growth of its members.

Throughout the year, council members strengthened their understanding of Ohio’s beef industry while building skills in communication, advocacy, and teamwork. The celebration provided an opportunity to reflect on accomplishments, recognize contributions, and celebrate the relationships formed through shared experiences and a passion for agriculture.

As members look ahead to future opportunities—both within and beyond the beef industry—the Ohio Beef Youth Council plays an important role in developing confident, informed young leaders who are ready to share beef ’s story.

We’re proud of this group’s commitment and grateful for the energy and perspective they bring to the future of Ohio beef.

The Ohio Beef Council was proud to attend the Ohio FFA Convention, engaging directly with educators, advisors, and students from across the state.

Throughout the event, we shared classroom-ready teaching materials and resources designed to support agricultural education and bring real-world beef knowledge into lessons. Advisors and educators had the opportunity to explore tools they can use to connect nutrition, food science, and beef production in meaningful, practical ways.

FFA members also rolled up their sleeves for a hands-on experience—mixing their own taco seasoning to pair with ground beef for dinner. The activity brought learning to life, reinforcing how simple ingredients, basic skills, and quality beef can come together to create a flavorful, affordable meal.

From the classroom to the kitchen, the Ohio FFA Convention offered a valuable opportunity to support educators, inspire students, and continue building understanding around beef ’s role in agriculture and everyday meals.

CATTLEMEN YOUTH AWARDED AT BEST BANQUET FOR A SUCCESSFUL SEASON The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association’s (OCA) Beef Exhibitor Show Total (BEST) program celebrated the 2025-2026 BEST season on May 2 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus. The awards banquet was attended by over 600 participants and their families. Over 350 BEST exhibitors were awarded for their show ring success, including cattle and showmanship, photography skills, scholarships and more.

This year’s BEST program featured nine weekends of sanctioned shows held throughout the state. Over 700 youth participants showed 1,000 head of market animals and heifers throughout the season.

This individual also plays a key role in mentoring the next group of young cattlemen and women.

JOIN US FOR THE CATTLEMEN’S GALA CELEBRATION & FUNDRAISER ON AUG. 29 The Ohio Cattlemen’s Foundation (OCF) will be hosting the annual Cattlemen’s Gala Celebration and Fundraiser on Aug. 29, 2026, at 5:30 p.m. in an air-conditioned building on the Delaware County Fairgrounds in Delaware, Ohio.

The Gala’s live music will feature the beef industry’s own, Dalton & Delaney. The acoustic team first met in 2022 at the National FFA Talent Program. They realized they both shared a love for music and decided to start their own duo. Dalton and Delaney are no strangers to the agriculture industry as they both grew up heavily involved in 4-H and FFA.

The Gala is open to all attendees and features a casual atmosphere A gourmet beef meal and two drink tickets will be included in the registration price. The night will begin

with appetizers and Gala-themed drinks before leading into the main course that includes beef tenderloin with all the fixin’s and handmade desserts.

Throughout the night, attendees can casually participate in the silent auction as items are displayed around the venue. The evening will conclude with the main event, a live auction offering something for everyone.

The funds raised at the Gala, and its live and silent auctions, are used for scholarships, including large animal veterinary students and scholarships for both the Columbus and Wooster campus livestock judging teams.

BEEF BRIEFS HARR ATTENDS NCBA YOUNG CATTLEMEN’S CONFERENCE

For more than four decades, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association’s (NCBA) Young Cattlemen’s Conference (YCC) has served as the premier leadership development program for emerging leaders in the cattle industry.

From May 28 through June 4, 2026, the Class of 2026 continued that tradition, gaining firsthand exposure to every segment of the beef value chain while building skills and relationships that will help shape the future of the industry.

This year’s class included 69 participants representing state cattlemen’s associations and breed organizations from across the country.

Since its inception in 1980, YCC has graduated more than 1,000 participants through 44 classes, creating a nationwide network of informed and engaged industry leaders.

“The YCC program was originally designed to provide emerging leaders with a deeper understanding of the entire beef value chain while also helping participants better understand NCBA’s role in the cattle and beef industry,” said NCBA President-Elect Kim Brackett.

The Class of 2026 began in Denver, Colorado, where participants spent three days at NCBA headquarters learning about membership, communications, government affairs, producer education, marketing and events. The group also toured Five Rivers Cattle Feeding’s Kuner Feedlot to gain a firsthand look at modern cattle feeding operations.

The tour then moved to Sioux City, Iowa, where participants explored beef processing and innovation through visits to Tyson Foods’ Dakota Dunes facility and empirical Foods. These tours provided insight into the complexity of

the beef supply chain and the challenges facing different sectors of the industry.

On June 2, the class traveled to Wooster, Ohio, to visit Certified Angus Beef headquarters. There, participants learned about the retail and foodservice sectors and discussed consumer preferences, purchasing trends and marketing strategies that help keep beef a top protein choice for consumers.

The final stop brought the class to Washington, D.C., where participants learned about NCBA’s grassroots policy development process and key legislative and regulatory issues impacting cattle producers. Following issue briefings, the group met directly with members of Congress and congressional staff to advocate for issues important to cattle producers and rural communities.

The program concluded with a reception and NCBA-PAC auction that raised more than $94,000 to support advocacy efforts in Washington. Led by 2026 YCC Chair Leoma Donsbach of Montana, participants left with a broader understanding of the industry, a renewed appreciation for advocacy and relationships that will last a lifetime.

JOHN GRIMES INDUCTED INTO THE 2026 OHIO AGRICULTURE HALL OF FAME

The Ohio Agricultural Council (OAC) is set to honor the 2026 awardees who have made lasting contributions to Ohio’s agricultural industry. This year’s inductees, John Grimes of Hillsboro, Nancy Patterson of Chesterland, Lawrence H. “L.H.” Newcomb of Hilliard and Sparky Weilnau of Milan, represent a diverse cross-section of Ohio agriculture, from education and youth development to production, agribusiness

and public service.

“Each of these individuals has helped shape Ohio agriculture in ways that reach far beyond their own work,” said Mike Bailey, president of the Ohio Agricultural Council and senior vice president of operations and partnerships at Ohio Farm Bureau Federation. “Their impact can be seen in the people they’ve mentored, the programs they’ve built and the example they’ve set for others to follow.”

The ceremony, celebrating its 60th year, will be held Friday, Aug. 7, 2026, and is expected to draw more than 600 attendees, including community leaders, industry professionals and family members. With this year’s class, the Ohio Agricultural Hall of Fame will have honored a total of 261 individuals since its inception. During his decades-long tenure with The Ohio State University Extension, he worked directly with producers across the state, delivering practical, research-based programs on cattle management, forage systems and marketing strategies that improved efficiency and profitability.

Beyond Extension, Grimes remained deeply connected to production agriculture as the owner of Maplecrest Farms, a respected seedstock operation known for high-quality Angus and Simmental cattle. He and his family also helped strengthen the connection between producers and consumers through Maplecrest Meats & More, a direct-to-consumer venture highlighting locally raised beef.

A trusted leader and mentor reaching across the country, Grimes influenced generations of cattle producers and agricultural professionals. His service at the state and national level, along with numerous industry recognitions, reflected a career dedicated to advancing Ohio’s beef industry.

PLAN TO ATTEND THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CELEBRITY STEER SHOW AT THE 2026 OHIO STATE FAIR The RMHC Celebrity Steer Show, an annual event that benefits Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of Central Ohio, is set for Wednesday, Aug. 5, at 4 p.m. in the Voinovich Livestock & Trade Center on the Ohio Expo Center and State Fairgrounds.

The event is hosted by RMHC along with the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association, the Ohio State Fair, and Telhio Credit Union.

The 2025 show raised over $322,000 for RMHC. “All funds raised at this event help families stay close while their child is in the hospital and provide essential support during a difficult time in their lives,” said Dee Anders, CEO and Executive Director of the charity. “This unique event brings the Ohio community together to honor agriculture and children, including our 4-H youth and families who are supported by the Ronald McDonald House.”

At the Steer Show, 10 teams consisting of a team captain, media partner, and experienced Ohio 4-H youth will not only show a steer during the show but also compete to see who can raise the most money for RMHC of Central Ohio.

PLAN NOW FOR THE 14th ANNUAL OCA REPLACEMENT FEMALE SALE The 2026 date for the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) 14th annual Replacement Female Sale will be Friday evening, Nov. 27. The sale will be held at the Muskingum Livestock Auction Co. in Zanesville, Ohio and will begin at 6:00 p.m.

The 2026 edition of OCA Replacement Female Sale will provide an opportunity for both buyers and sellers to meet the need for quality replacements in the state. Consignments may include cowcalf pairs, bred cows and bred heifers.

Females must be under the age of five as of January 1, 2027, and may be of registered or commercial background.

Bred females must be bred to a bull with known EPD’s and calves at the side of cows must be sired by a bull with known EPD’s. Pregnancy status must be verified by an accredited veterinarian through traditional palpation, ultrasound or by blood testing through a professional laboratory. Analysis must be performed within 30 days of sale. Consignments will also complete several specific health requirements.

Why discuss a sale that is several months away? The middle of the breeding season is an excellent time to evaluate your herd and consider marketing decisions for the fall. Young, high-

quality cattle backed by solid genetics are in demand with potential buyers.

Yearling heifers bred artificially to proven calving ease sires are very marketable. A shorter breeding season that results in a tighter calving window has also proven to be popular with potential buyers.

As we think about that tight breeding season, consider those February through early May calving females as potential consignments and breeding pieces that will fit calving windows for many Ohio producers. In previous years females bred for March and April calves have been toward the top of the sale.

It is also a great time to evaluate the body condition of potential sale animals and make nutritional adjustments to the animal’s diet in anticipation of a late November sale date. Body Condition Scores in the 5-6 range on a 9-point scale at sale time is a good goal to strive to achieve. Additional considerations when evaluating females and making breeding decisions include udder conformation, temperament and feet and legs.

At the 2025 sale, buyers evaluated 73 lots of bred heifers, bred cows, and cowcalf pairs at the auction. The sale included 59 lots of bred heifers that averaged $4,115, 3 cow-calf pairs sold for $4,533 each, and 11 lots of bred cows that

averaged $4,372. The 73 total lots grossed a record $317,000 for an overall average of $4,342. The females sold to buyers from Ohio and Michigan.

Sales prices were significantly higher year over year driven by current cattle prices and the quality of the females offered, as the 2025 sale represented a $1,437 per head price increase over the 2024 sale. Demand was very strong for quality females as 60 lots brought over $4,000, and 11 of those sold for $5,000 or greater. Prices remained steady throughout the auction with many buyers sweeping the ring at two or three head at a time.

The Ohio Beef Youth Council recognized members’ achievements during its annual end-of-year celebration on June 5 . Youth participants were honored for excellence in stockmanship, carcass evaluation, and leadership, while a new leadership team was announced for the 2026-2027 program year.
