As winter gives way to spring across Ohio, there’s a renewed energy in the air. Calving barns are filling, pastures are greening, and the promise of a new production year is right in front of us.

Spring has always been a season of optimism in the cattle business — a time when the work of yesterday meets the opportunity of tomorrow.

That optimism feels especially warranted this year. Strong cash markets and robust consumer demand for beef reinforce the value of the product we work so hard to produce. Even as we move into the downhill side of bull sale season, the consistency and strength in seedstock prices — particularly for high-quality, performancedriven bulls — reflects the confidence producers have in the future of the industry.

Momentum was also on full display at the 2026 Ohio Beef Expo.

Despite construction challenges, the event delivered in a big way, proving the resilience and commitment of Ohio’s cattlemen and women. This year’s Expo featured the sale of 320 head of purebred cattle, 521 judging contest participants, 820 junior show cattle, 117 tradeshow exhibitors, and a record-setting commercial cattle sale with more than 22,000 head consigned. Looking ahead, the new and improved fairgrounds promise to make the 2027 Expo even bigger and better.

That sense of opportunity was also echoed recently on a national stage, as President Donald Trump addressed farmers and ranchers at the White House. His remarks focused on lowering input costs, expanding access to capital through loan guarantees, and strengthening demand through biofuels and sound policy, issues that directly impact producers here in Ohio. Regardless of where you stand, it is clear that agriculture, and the role of producers, is front and center in the broader conversation about our economy and our future. At the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association, we remain focused on advocacy, ensuring our members’ voices are heard on the issues that matter most. From reducing unnecessary regulatory burdens to expanding market opportunities, OCA works to turn conversations into meaningful outcomes. I encourage all members to engage with their legislators and stay involved — your voice is critical in shaping the future of Ohio beef.

Inspiring Days

By Elizabeth Harsh, Ohio Cattleman Editor This issue is full of coverage from the recent Ohio Beef Expo. As expected, given the strong cattle markets, the Expo was a tremendous success by all accounts. During one of the review meetings, Beef Expo sale managers, who manage seedstock sales across the country, asked what OCA does post-Expo to tell the story of its outstanding success.

That’s a great compliment on the strength of the breed sales. Expo veterinarians reported writing health papers on 86 head of cattle bought by out-of-state buyers in 23 different states from Maine to California!

In the months leading up to the event, the ongoing construction on the fairgrounds certainly presented the Beef Expo planning committees with some traffic flow and trailer parking challenges. But Expo volunteer leaders took the challenge head-on and developed a plan for traffic flow that prevailed over the obstacles, received extremely positive feedback and requests to continue it for 2027.

Each year these passionate and hard-working volunteers and staff leave Columbus exhausted with aching feet and records set for miles walked.

I also leave the Expo feeling grateful and inspired by all the individuals that pour their hearts into making the Ohio Beef Expo successful. Thank you and Ohio’s beef industry thanks you!

That same feeling of inspiration was present in abundance at Ohio State’s recent CFAES State of the College program. I’m fortunate, due in part to OCA’s ongoing partnerships, to be better informed than most alumni and stakeholders. Yet as I heard the many inspiring stories, I still left the State of the College event with a renewed sense of pride and inspiration for the college and their outstanding work to further the land grant mission. As we travel the state this spring, groundwork is still sporadic with the roller-coaster of weather Ohio has experienced in recent weeks. Baby calves are prevalent in nearly every pasture. And in my opinion, cows and newborn calves are still one of my favorites and most inspiring scenes as you consider the promise for the future each new calf holds. Preaching to the Choir

By Garth Ruff, Beef Cattle Field Specialist, OSU Extension Mark Twain is quoted as saying, “In the Spring, I have counted 136 different kinds of weather inside of 24 hours”. I’m not sure if there is any better way to describe the roller coaster start to the spring season we have had thus far.

Beef Expo is behind us and as expected, the overall sentiment is that it is a good time to be in the cow-calf business. Seedstock and the lot loads of feeder cattle that I watched sell at Expo, all sold very well. That continues to be the case across the country as we are now in the heat of bull buying season and the grass is not only green but trying to grow after the recent influx of moisture across most of the state.

Spring calving is also in full swing, which means that it is never too late to plan for the rest of the production year. Sometimes, writing these good production practice/ planning ahead type articles is like preaching to the choir. That said, the public speaking professor at OSU always said most people have to hear things three times for it to stick, therefore, “tell ‘em, tell ‘em what you told ‘em, and tell ‘em again”.

Many different people have said over time that owning cows in Eastern and Southern Ohio was a byproduct of land ownership. Not today. Cows are a profit center and should be treated as such. Once 8 | Ohio Cattleman | Spring Issue 2026

again, probably preaching to the choir.

Prevent the preventable. While weather and the markets are out of our control. As producers we can do things to prevent production losses. Given the value of cattle today, health practices such as breeding soundness exams, vaccinations, forage testing, and preconditioning calves has never been cheaper. Every cow that is open, every sick calf, and every pound not gained prior to marketing calves this fall will decrease revenue.

With high replacement and feeder cattle prices, the conversation about holding over open cows has been discussed more than ever during Extension meetings. While it may be tempting to hold over a young cow if open or if it has lost a calf, the general recommendation remains the same. Fire her and send her to town. Not only has that cow failed at her only job, she herself is worth more as beef than she has ever been.

Manage risk. If buying cattle to background or feed, one should estimate margins before purchasing cattle. The ability to predict cattle performance and lock in margins while knowing cost of production is crucial. That is how cattle feeders can justify some of the prices we have seen for day old Holstein and beef on dairy calves. Also keep in mind production costs continue to

rise. Fuel and fertilizer have increased in price significantly since the start of military operations in Iran. Major global events cause volatility, if not in beef prices, in input costs.

Livestock Risk Protection remains a valuable tool in the toolbox to mitigate risk. The ability to lock in a price floor is key. Contracting fed cattle in lot loads offers protection as well.

Market fundamentals show that this cattle market should be good for the foreseeable future. Cattle supply is still short, and the Drought Monitor continues to show severe drought in the west.

Demand is strong, driven largely by the quality eating experience beef provides. So far in 2026, cattle are grading at 14% prime. Even though price margins between beef and competitive proteins have widened, we have yet to hit a price point where the consumer has pushed back at the retail counter.

Unless something out of our control causes the economy to go haywire, this cattle cycle looks to be at worst, plateaued for an extended period of time. I look forward to getting cattle turned out on pasture and capitalizing on the amazing capabilities of the ruminant animal.

Before we know it, summer will be here and the hay fields will be calling.

A FOCUS ON THE BEEF CATTLE BUSINESS WITH THE OSU EXTENSION BEEF TEAM

Winter Evaluation Jordan Penrose, Ohio State University Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources Educator, Morgan County When is a better time to talk about winter evaluation for the farm? Right now, after the winter, or later on in the year? I would like to think that everyone reading this just said to themselves right now.

If you are unsure of why right now is the best time, that is because you have the needed time to plan, and this past winter is still fresh in your mind. I realize some of you may be busy right now with calving or are getting ready for the upcoming growing season.

But with things still fresh in your minds from this past winter, the problems are easier to remember.

Planning takes time, and what you may need to do could take some time as well, especially if some repairs are involved. Also, if you were to delay and work on things later, that could lead to repeating some of the same issues from last year. By planning now, it can help ensure that time and resources are not as limited as they could be later on. If you’re unsure of where to start evaluating, some good places to look at are your infrastructure, livestock management, and feeding and nutrition.

Infrastructure Looking at infrastructure right now might be a two-for-one deal because you also might be checking pastures and getting ready to start grazing season. But focusing on the winter part of evaluation, some things that you could be looking at are water systems, buildings, feeding areas, and overall access.

We didn’t have time in January and February, when it got really cold.

Did anything freeze up on you, or not work in the cold? Did animals have adequate shelter when they 10 | Ohio Cattleman | Spring Issue 2026

needed it? Did you have a hard time accessing areas that you needed to get to when it was really cold or when it was muddy? We had a couple of high wind events that may have caused damage.

These are some things that you could look back on and see what went wrong for you, or even what actually went right for you as well.

Livestock management When it comes to livestock management, I bet this is one thing that you evaluate all the time or should be evaluating all the time.

A lot of your management is going to depend on what time of year you are calving, because a cow’s needs are different throughout different parts of the year. You are also going to manage your cows differently from your replacement heifers, or if you’re finishing out some steers. Some other things that you could be looking at as well is the body condition of your cows going into spring and maybe write down what body condition score each one has. Doing this can help you better monitor your cattle and maybe help you catch something if one cow has a dramatic change compared to the rest of the herd.

Another thing that you should be looking at from this past winter is, were there any health issues that came up? Livestock management is a crucial part of any operation that has animals, and reflection can help you improve your operation.

Feeding and nutrition Feeding and nutrition are among the most important things to look at, if not the most important. If you typically have your calves in late winter or the first part of spring,

you are in the time when your cows need their greatest requirements because they are calving, producing milk, and getting ready for rebreeding. So, you’ve got to be making sure you’re hitting all the requirements for that cow to do all of that. If you are still feeding hay, is that hay meeting the nutritional need for that cow? If you just said yes to that question, did you test hay to see what the quality of it was? A lot of hay samples that we tested last August in an extension hay quality project did not meet the needs of cows during this time.

During winter, what did you do to prepare for calving? Also, you can look back and see what the feed usage was like, was there any waste, did you have to supplement any?

When you are taking this time to evaluate this past winter, keep in mind that it will only matter if you record it somewhere. That could be as simple as writing it down in a notebook, in your phone notes, or a system that works for you and your farm. Write it down somewhere so that you can revisit.

Winter evaluation is not just about winter; it’s about year-round efficiency to help you improve, because decisions made now can influence the rest of the year and possibly spread out your workload.

Before spring and summer work takes over, take some time and write down what happened, and what went right and wrong. These small steps can help make next winter better, more efficient, and less stressful.

Harr helps build a Future for her family’s Hereford operation

After high school, Keayla Harr was determined to learn as much as she could about the cattle industry. At the time she was living on a first generation Hereford farm in Jeromesville in Ashland County.

She decided to head out West to “true cow country” to see how the cattle industry operates in different environments.

“It was very eye-opening,” she said. “You never take having lots of water for granted like we do in Ohio.”

Keayla attended Casper College in Wyoming and later Kansas State University where she decided to change her focus from ruminant nutrition to meat science. That decision was driven by her experiences while on the collegiate meat judging team. She recognized the need for more ag professionals to understand meat production from “time of conception to plate.”

After receiving bachelor’s and master’s degrees in meat science, Keayla’s thirst to learn more was still strong, and she continued her education, earning a PhD in meat science with a research focus on meat color and beef quality. After that, she was ready for a break from the rigors of 12 | Ohio Cattleman | Spring Issue 2026 graduate school and headed home to help

out on the family farm. She brought along with her the educational skills that she’d gained over the years.

“The ability to analyze data, read through scientific articles and synthesize information … those skills won’t fade anytime soon and have been helpful,” she said.

Shortly after Keayla returned home, she was asked to join E.R. Boliantz Co., a nearby meatpacking company where her father used to work and continues to help out as needed.

“Bob (Boliantz) knew I’d finished my PhD and was back in the area and asked if I wanted a job. I wasn’t really looking but thought I’d come in and try it, and it’s been truly awesome. He’s a great person to work with and I get to put my meat science skills to work in a different way than I had envisioned,” she said.

At Boliantz, Keayla does a variety of jobs including sorting fat cattle and tagging carcasses as well as interacting with customers who are curious about where their meat comes from and how the cattle are raised. That type of consumer connection is vital for local businesses like Boliantz and the cattle industry, she said.

Keayla puts in long hours at work and the family Hereford seedstock operation, J & L Cattle Services run by her parents, Jeff and Lou Ellen.

“It’s very much a family operation.

Everyone has to pull their weight,” she said.

J & L Cattle calves out about 100 cows each year during the spring and fall. The operation also keeps about 40 replacement heifers and custom raises about 100 heifers.

The cattle are marketed via a production sale, private treaty, at the Ohio Beef Expo, through Boliantz or as freezer beef to local customers.

“We’ve learned over the years that to be successful, we need to be diversified,” Keayla said, noting that the family also grows hay and row crops.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of J & L Cattle and the family plans to start having its production sale every year instead of every other year. The sale is on the second Saturday in October and typically draws 200-300 people from more than a dozen states and Canada.

“About half of the lots are our own and many of the buyers are long-time friends. It’s really

rewarding to see them come back and how we’re selling cattle that really work for them,” Keayla said.

When discussing goals for the family farm, Keayla said shortterm ones are to purchase land and continue to grow the cow herd and that long-term is for J & L Cattle to be a trusted source of Hereford cattle across the eastern United States. Another goal is for her to be a mentor like so many were for her when she was involved with 4-H, FFA and the National Junior Hereford Association. Being involved with those organizations opened doors as well as helped pay for college through scholarships.

“I was extremely fortunate to grow up in this business,” she said.

“When you have the opportunity to be involved and give back, it’s critically important. I want to see this around for the next generation.”

Her appreciation for the cattle industry runs deep, rooted in memories of long days and creative problem solving on the farm.

“There were a lot of times growing up that we did things we don’t do anymore,” she said, recalling summers spent hauling cattle to shows across the country. “We took

cattle because that’s what it took to pay the bills.” She remembers hauling steers to junior nationals, knowing the animals would later be harvested and sold to help cover travel costs, along with early mornings making square bales for hay sales to keep cash flowing.

“Certainly how hard Mom and Dad have worked makes me appreciate what we have. It makes me work as hard as I can to make sure it’s still there for my lifetime,” she said.

At age 29, Keayla is already looking ahead at the future for the family farm and her career. She recently received OCA’s Young Cattleman of the Year award, which she described as surprising and humbling. She immediately thought of everyone who has supported her over the years.

“I think a lot of it boils down to being lucky enough to have really good people around you that push you to do good things and be better every day. It’s the people who make this business so much fun. I’m so appreciative of having parents who raised me in this industry and all the opportunities I’ve had along the way. I’m incredibly blessed.”

BEST SEASON WILL WRAP-UP AT ANNUAL AWARDS BANQUET ON MAY 2 The 2025-26 BEST season will come to a close on May 2 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus and all BEST participants and their families are encouraged to attend and join in the celebration.

Awards will be presented for Breed Divisions, Buckeye Breeders Series Divisions, Bred and Owned, Overall Heifers and Market Animals, Showmanship and more. Other opportunities of recognition include photography contests, scholarships, etc.

New Jr. BEST representatives will be announced and retiring reps will be recognized.

Those nominated for Character Trait awards will be announced and awarded thanks to OCA’s partnership with Weaver Livestock Thanks to sponsors like M.H. EBY, Weaver Livestock and Ag-Pro, there

will be many exciting drawings and giveaways for participants throughout the evening.

Just like last year, there will be two EBY trailer drawings.The winner of both drawings will take home a livestock trailer to use for the year. The first trailer drawing is for all BEST participants, and the second drawing will be exclusively for Buckeye Breeder’s Series (BBS) participants.

The 38th Ohio Beef Expo was held March 19-22 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio. The Expo, hosted by the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA), is the premier event for Ohio’s beef industry covering many facets of the beef world with seedstock shows and sales, a trade show, a competitive junior show and much more all in one place.

2026 EXPO RESULTS & HIGHLIGHTS

The Expo kicked off Thursday with the Judging contest. It was cohosted with the Ohio State University’s (OSU) collegiate and ATI junior collegiate Livestock Judging Teams and included over 550 youth participants from Ohio and surrounding states judging six classes of cattle, answering questions and evaluating breed data sheets.

The full trade show opened at 12 noon on Thursday featuring many exhibitors selling everything from cattle chutes to farm insurance.

Following the opening of the trade show was The Social event where producers and industry affiliates gathered to network and participate in OCA’s Political Action Committee (PAC) auction where over $10,000 was raised. Music was provided by acoustic duo Dalton and Delaney.

Most of the breeds hosted shows or parades on Friday to display cattle being sold in the sales. The Genetic Pathway, located in the Hubbard Feeds Breeds Barn, showcased the industry’s most popular sires and donor prospects on display throughout the weekend.

Friday was also host to the annual online Feeder Cattle Sale hosted

by LiveAg and sponsored by United Producers, Inc. that offered consignments of uniform packages of feeder cattle sold off the farm.

This year’s sale included 23,000 head of steers, heifers and beef on dairy cattle.

The seven breed sales flourished this year with a combined total of 284 live lots sold at an average of $6,121 and a total gross sales of $1,738,250.

The Junior Show included over 860 entries. Showmanship was held Friday, followed by the Market Animal show on Saturday and the Heifer show on Sunday. Junior Showmanship was judged by Carly Wesner-Riley, IL and Mari Crandell, IL. Market Animals were evaluated

by Brent Cromwell, TX and the Heifer show judge was Brady Jensen, KS. Additionally, Jensen judged the Buckeye Breeders Series (BBS) market animal ring and Cromwell judged the BBS heifer ring.

Three recipients were honored with the Friend of the Expo Award for their dedication and contributions to the Expo’s success over the years. John Ferguson, Ferguson Cattle Company, Jefferson, Ohio; Sullivan Supply and Weaver Livestock received the 2026 honors for serving the Ohio Beef Expo for over a decade.

Education from Farm to Fork

The year began with a strong partnership with Kroger, featuring National Soup Month media appearances, a Grilling for Good summer event, statewide in-store recipe tear pads, and television segments that reached more than 645,000 consumers.

Through Ohio State University events and student-athlete partnerships, OBC highlighted beef’s role in performance nutrition. Activations included the OSU 4-Miler, where 12,000 runners received lean beef recipe cards and beef snacks, and the Game Day Taste & Traditions video series featuring Carson Hinzman, Mia Thuman, and Kennedy Cambridge.

In partnership with the Ohio High School Athletic Association, the beef checkoff reached more than 2 million fans across 75 state championships, promoting the Sports Nutrition Game Plan and positioning lean beef as a top protein choice for student-athletes and their families.

OBC video content generated more than 1.5 million views worldwide, while the Eat Beef Ohio Passport encouraged support for local restaurants and meat markets, driving 25,000 website visits and 120,000 social media views.

New and expanded partnerships amplified beef’s message statewide and beyond. A collaboration with the Columbus Blue Jackets reached millions of fans throughout the season, while two Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner. e-commerce campaigns inspired $348 million in national beef sales and more than $6 million in traceable Ohio sales.

Through hands-on tours, classroom resources, culinary competitions, and public outreach, OBC educated millions of consumers, students, and professionals about beef nutrition, food safety, and Ohio’s beef farm families—strengthening trust and growing demand for beef across the state.

Producer Education & Engagement

OBC strengthened connections with beef producers through leadership development, hands-on education, and consistent communication. Programs such as BEEF 509, the Ohio Beef Youth Council, and engagement at key events—including the Ohio Beef Expo, Ohio State Fair, and Farm Science Review— equipped producers with tools to add value, share beef’s story with confidence, and grow demand for Ohio beef.

BEEF BRIEFS PAT WALDOCK APPOINTED TO OCA BOARD TO REPRESENT DISTRICT 2

Pat Waldock of Bloomville was appointed to the OCA board of directors at the board’s January meeting. He will complete the remaining term as director for district 2 that became open when Andy Lohr was elected OCA vice president. The district 2 term expires at the end of 2027 and includes Crawford, Erie, Hancock, Huron, Ottawa, Sandusky, Seneca Richland and Wyandot Counties.

Waldock and his family raise registered Shorthorn cattle in Seneca County.

Additionally, he has worked in agricultural sales his entire career and currently is in Ag sales and crop protection for KOVA of Ohio. Waldock is a graduate of Ohio State ATI. He is married with two grown children and four grandchildren. OCA looks forward to working with Waldock for the betterment of Ohio’s cattle industry.

Governor Mike DeWine recently appointed Joe Foster of Gallipolis to the Ohio Expositions Commission. Foster currently serves on the OCA board of directors. He was OCA president in 20162017. Additionally, Foster is a member of the Beef Board, a position appointed by USDA, and responsible for overseeing the federal beef checkoff program. He was appointed by the Ohio Department of Agriculture and served multiple terms on the Ohio Beef Council with similar state responsibilities.

Foster, and his family, operate commercial cow-calf, backgrounding and feedlot enterprises in Gallia County.

Active in his community, he has served on multiple boards and committees. In addition, he is a former Gallia County Commissioner and board member for the Southern Ohio Agricultural and Community Development Foundation, and member of the Gallia County Community Improvement Cooperation.

Aug. 5 4 p.m Join us to celebrate the values of agriculture, youth, and community. Together influential Central Ohio leaders, 4-H youth from across the state, and local media personalities will raise awareness and vital funds to support RMHC of Central Ohio and the thousands of families they assist each year.

PARTING SHOTS OCA and the Ohio Department of Agriculture partnered during Agriculture month to invite elected officials to the 2026 Ohio Beef Expo held in March. Attending were Ohio Govenor candidate Vivek Ramaswamey, Senator Michele Reynolds, as well as Representatives Joe Miller, Roy Klopfenstein, Johnathan Newman, and Bob Peterson.

They were able to tour the Expo, visit with vendors and exhibitors and learn more about the beef industry. They also discussed agricultural priorities within the state operating budget.

OCA hosted a calving clinic at the Ohio State University Multispecies Animal Learning Complex. Over 50 OCA members gathered to learn new calving techniques, improve herd management practices, and gain hands-on knowledge to support successful calving seasons.
