Hello!

I hope the first month of your new year has gone well and you’re still as motivated for improvement as you were at the start of the year. The hardest part of making life changes and improvements is not always getting started, but sustaining it and making it part of your life going forward. I’ve definitely had my difficult moments so far, but I’m doing my best to keep pushing forward and achieving my goals and lifestyle changes. We only get one life and I know I want to make it the best I can.

I know one group of boys that are really doing great – our OKC Thunder! I think I speak for every Okie when I say this is freaking awesome! It has been such a wonderful surprise to see our boys do so well this season. After we lost Russ and PG, I didn’t have much hope for a winning season. No one really did, and here we are, watching a beautiful brand and style of winning basketball unlike anything we have seen in the franchise’s history. This team makes me very proud, as I’m sure it does all of you, and I will definitely continue to Thunder Up each time they step on the court!

We have a great issue for you this month. Our creative staff has done an awesome job working with our local partners to bring new home ideas your way. We work with some fantastic local companies who all have different styles and products that will surely provide you with some inspiration for your home. We can only show so much from these stores in our pages, so go and check them out for yourself. Since they’re all local stores, when you pop in you can probably catch the owners, each of whom would love to help you personally.

Thank you all for your continued support of So6ix Magazine. We truly love getting to make this magazine each month and hopefully provide you with something that inspires you while showcasing our great city and doing it proud.

Thank you,

IMPAIRED DRIVER ACCOUNTABILITY

Q: What is IDAP?

A: With the passage of Senate Bill 712, the Oklahoma Legislature created the Impaired Driver Accountability Program (IDAP). The law implemented a significant change in the administrative handling of driver license revocations and Ignition Interlock requirements in relation to DUI offenders. The law does away with the previous opportunity for DPS phone hearings in relation to license revocations, but it also shortens Ignition Interlock requirements and allows a licensee to avoid having a license revocation noted on their driving record.

Q: What does it mean for me?

A: If you find yourself in the unfortunate position of being pulled over by a police officer and you provide a breath or blood alcohol sample of .08% or more, or if you refuse the State’s test, you will now have the option of participating in IDAP. From the date of your arrest, you have 30 days to request participation in IDAP or to challenge the revocation by filing a civil challenge in the district court for the county of your arrest.

Q: How long is IDAP participation?

A: IDAP and/or potential revocation if you don’t participate in IDAP are the same length of time regardless of whether or not you test .08% or more or if you refuse the test: 6 months for a first offense, 1 year for a second offense and 3 years for a third offense. If you elect IDAP, you will be required to install an Ignition Interlock Device in your car, pay a $250 fee to DPS, provide proof of vehicle insurance and go to DPS to obtain a modified license. There are many more details than can be provided here, so if you find yourself in a DUI situation, call me immediately so I can help you through the process without difficulty. Save John Martino’s cell phone number in your phone now. He should be the first call you make. 405.902.5344

This precious pup is as snuggly as he is adorable. The alarm isn’t his wake-up call, but his cue to jump in bed and snuggle! Mushu is a Shih Tzu who will be turning 2 this month. His owners named him after the dragon in “Mulan,” and he is living up to the name with his playful and loving personality. You might catch Mushu eating his favorite treats, Nulo freeze-dried nuggets and cherry tomatoes. When his owners go for a drive, he wants to come along, especially if it’s time to go see Nana. This sweet snuggler has beautiful blue eyes and if you’re lucky, he will even wink at you! If Mushu isn’t headed out for a ride in the car, you can probably find him on the back porch, enjoying the view.

CAFE KACAO

WHAT WE TASTED

CHILAQUILES WITH CHORIZO

Pan-fried chips with tomatillo sauce, topped with fried eggs, onion, avocado, feta, cilantro, and beans

CUBAN OMELET

Omelet stuffed with queso chihuahua and whole black beans, topped with vaca frita (mojo shredded beef & onions) and served with plantains

WHAT WE SIPPED

HORCHATA LATTE

Horchata syrup, espresso, milk

MATCHA LATTE

Matcha, house vanilla, milk

Cafe Kacao is a breakfast and brunch hot spot that specializes in traditional Guatemalan cuisine, so we figured it was best to get to the venue at around 10 a.m. and see what all the fuss was about. This restaurant doesn’t take reservations, and we foolishly didn’t think to put our names on the wait list until just before we were about to leave. Upon calling we were told there was an hour-long wait to be seated. Time for Plan B, which meant rescheduling a late lunch at around 2 p.m. Once again, there was a wait, but this time we used Yelp and were able to put ourselves on the wait list through the app. We suggest you do the same, as this place is extremely popular!

After arriving, it was immediately clear why people were literally lined up out the door to try this place. Cafe Kacao is rather unassuming from the outside, but inside awaits a vivacious restaurant experience that is unmatched in Oklahoma City. You are greeted by the sound of clinking cutlery, joyous conversation and Latin American music. Its fun and energetic vibe is perfect for a weekend brunch with friends and equally as accommodating for families with little ones.

To start, we ordered the Chilaquiles, and we added chorizo for good measure. The dish was full of flavor and presented beautifully. The added chorizo is not required to enhance the taste, but it provides a little spice for those who like it.

Next up was the Cuban Omelet with each ingredient complementing the others to perfection. The vaca frita was melt-in-your-mouth good, and in my opinion it made the dish a standout. A word to the wise: the servings are more than generous, so depending on how hungry you are, splitting a dish is not a bad idea.

We washed our food down with a Horchata Latte and Matcha Latte. Cafe Kacao has their coffee shipped to them from Guatemala within 48 hours of being roasted to ensure freshness. Their coffee is famous around OKC for its clean and bright flavor, and it didn’t disappoint. If you have a sweet tooth like me, we highly recommend the Horchata Latte.

All in all this was a highly enjoyable experience. The spirited atmosphere was matched perfectly by the appetizing and inviting menu. It truly is a unique and delectable experience that makes you feel part of the vibrant Latin American culture – a must try.

EDMOND MOBILE MEALS

Welcome to our monthly section in which we highlight local charities and nonprofits of all kinds that are doing great things in our city. We believe change can come in all sizes and at all times. The smallest act can turn around so much for even just one person, animal or place. If we can lift up one small aspect of one life, imagine what we can all do when we come together for the greater good of the people in this amazing city. Let’s continue highlighting the Oklahoma Standard, together.

Edmond Mobile Meals has been in service for 46 years.

They deliver 200 meals each day to the homebound or disabled.

400 citizens assist with the volunteer program.

The program got its start when 7 churches each pitched in $25.

Edmond Mobile Meals has been in operation since 1974. They work to provide nourishing meals to elderly and disabled people who are unable to prepare meals for themselves. Those who are homebound are able to remain independent, well fed, and cared for thanks to the wonderful volunteers. A variety of people, from retirees to young adults, choose to volunteer their time in many ways, and they may help every week or once a month depending on their schedules. Volunteers, financial contributors, and unselfish community support are the backbone of the program. Though it may seem like the volunteers are simply delivering meals, the most important thing they do is show these members of their community love and compassion!
