INSPIRED LEARNING. Oglethorpe University continues to build on the strong foundation laid over the course of more than 180 years. This sense of permanence and purpose—of potential and progress—is the heart of inspired learning and inspired giving.

On the Cover: BIG PLANS “Make no little plans. They have no power to stir men’s blood…,” said Daniel Burnham, America’s preeminent architect at the start of the 20th century.

In a brief glimpse of OU history, the cover shows the blueprint for Lupton Hall, the second building on campus. An inspiring structure, it was completed in three phases with dedication ceremonies in 1922, 1924 and 1927. Ninety years later, we continue to have big plans.

IN PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE

MAJOR: Biology HOMETOWN: San Diego, California I knew of Oglethorpe through a mentor who was a family friend and like a grandfather to me. Mr. Elmer Etling ’49 was a history buff and numismatist. From him I learned what it takes to be an intellectual, a man in pursuit of truth and virtue. I felt a sense of duty to follow in his footsteps and continue the OU traditions and ideals.

The most important aspect of this university is authenticity.

I’m gaining graduate level experience in my premed track with Dr. Lea Alford, assistant professor of biology, who conducted post-doctorate research at Emory on Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, a genetic model organism. She wanted to expand it at OU so I helped her set up the project, learning lab techniques and how to do research. At Oglethorpe, we’re doing novel and collaborative research with Emory and institutions around the world.

“Faculty demonstrate adaptability so students never feel defeated. There is always an option and an open door if students are willing to move forward.”

THE SKY IS THE LIMIT

MAJOR: Physics HOMETOWN: Tegucigalpa, Honduras At Oglethorpe, faculty, staff and students care about each other and take the time to show it. I’m in computational physics and the OU honors program. Dr. Michael Rulison, professor of physics, and Dr. Mariel Meier, assistant professor of physics, make my experience more meaningful.

They love their work and it is infectious.

Students ahead of me welcomed me and became my role models. They always had time for school, friends, classes, service, and clubs. From them I learned I can commit to a high level. Before coming to OU, I did not know my potential.

“My 10-year goal is to work for NASA or SpaceX, which designs, manufactures and launches rockets and spacecraft.

My long-term plan is to return to Honduras and create a center for young people to study science. I want to provide scholarships so others can have opportunities like I’ve had.”

I identify most with service leadership. I want to give back to Oglethorpe, the community and the organizations in which I participate. Every day I can strive to be a better person and the leader I want to be.

Paths Leading to INTERNSHIPS Olivia Reingold ’17 grew up listening to National Public Radio.

At Oglethorpe, she listened to WRAS-FM 88.5. When it came time for an internship, she wrote directly to Celeste Headlee, host and executive producer of the daily news talk show On Second Thought.

“I learned how to think at OU. My American Studies major is invaluable in a creative field, because I have a historical context for stories. I can understand the ‘why’ behind the story and that is what public radio demands.”

“I was hired because I’m passionate about public radio,” Olivia says. “The technical skills—like editing audio clips— were learned on the job.” Olivia attributes her success to the rigor of her Oglethorpe courses. “With my broad, liberal arts education,” she says, “I connect facts and consider other perspectives.”

As a full-time staff member of Georgia Public Broadcasting, Olivia produces for two radio shows: Political Rewind and Two Way Street. Her dream job is to be a feature profile writer. “My first job is so many steps in the right direction,” Olivia says.

Katherine Townsend ’17 graduated with a double major in economics and philosophy. The Perry, Georgia, native says being part of Atlanta’s community was helpful to her in gaining real-world experience as an intern. She interned in OU’s Center for Civic Engagement where she recruited students for service projects and helped to plan activities and events. She also managed the CCE’s partnerships with educational organizations.

That experience led to an intern position as an economics research assistant at the World Affairs Council of Atlanta.

The WAC and Georgia State University J. Mack Robinson College of Business produce a country index of governance, economics, operations, and society. Katherine collected data on 199 countries, then cross checked, organized, formatted, and shared it online.

Today she is an analyst with Lincoln Property Company where she completed a research project similar in size to the one at WAC. “I’m always learning. Right now, I am re-reading books from OU classes because my job gives me a fresh perspective.”

Purpose STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP PREPARING TOMORROW’S BUSINESS AND CIVIC LEADERS

WHAT IS THE PRESIDENT’S EMERGING LEADERS PROGRAM?

Dr. Shane Pruitt, director of student engagement and leadership, shares his thoughts on how Campus Life prepares students to succeed.

SP: Incoming freshmen are nominated for a semester-long guided leadership training. Then, they connect to campus leadership opportunities to gain practical experience and better understand their leadership styles.

WHAT PROGRAMS FALL UNDER STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP?

WHAT NEW PROGRAM SHOULD WE KNOW ABOUT?

SP: Student Engagement and Leadership includes the large-scale focuses of Student Government Association, Greek Life, and New-Student Orientation, where 50 student-leaders usher in the first-year class.

WHAT DO STUDENTS GET OUT OF BEING INVOLVED IN THESE KINDS OF ACTIVITIES? SP: Learning outcomes involve teamwork and gaining individual strengths. Our programs tie into real skills that are important for career placement and growth, like: • Defining a personal vision.

• Evaluating the effectiveness of your leadership style and decisions.

• Increasing awareness of diversity and inclusion.

• Developing a commitment to citizenship and social excellence.

• Demonstrating ownership of your experiences.

SP: This fall Campus Life introduced the Oglethorpe Leadership Institute that offers broad training of individual leadership skills. The Institute is open for any current student to apply. There are four tiers, one semester each, which result in a leadership certificate. Students can be—and are— leaders in arenas such as political advocacy or nonprofit management, and this program encourages all types of leadership and experience.

The tiers are offered each semester: Tier 1 – Basic understanding of leadership and leadership of self. What makes you a leader?

Tier 2 – Leadership of the team. Use your strengths in working with others.

Tier 3 – Civic engagement. Change the world through involvement outside OU. Tier 4 – Career and global exploration. Engage with mentors from local to global companies.

Inspired Giving COUSINS FAMILY LEGACY CONTINUES THREE GENERATIONS OF GIVING TO OGLETHORPE

Throughout Atlanta, the philanthropic efforts of the Cousins’ family are focused on long-term solutions by giving to organizations that provide paths to opportunity and prosperity.

Oglethorpe University is proud to be a recipient of the Cousins’ generosity.

Tom Cousins (H) ’07 and his wife Ann came forward in May 2017 with a $2.5 million lead gift for the Center for Science and Innovation, the largest single gift Oglethorpe has received from an individual family. The Center will be named for Tom Cousins’ father as recognition for this gift and for their giving over the past decade.

Lillian Giornelli, daughter of Ann and Tom Cousins and CEO of the Cousins Foundation, said her family enjoys a long history and deep connection to Oglethorpe.

“My grandfather, I.W. “Ike” Cousins ’27 was a proud Oglethorpe graduate,” said Lillian. “He was a science major and three-sport letterman. We are delighted to play a lead role in this next phase of Oglethorpe’s continued growth in memory of Ike Cousins and in honor of the leadership of President Schall.”

The I.W. “Ike” Cousins Center for Science and Innovation will attract the best and brightest students to Oglethorpe and will enable us to teach much more effectively than we can now.

Inspired Giving Leads to Learning HONORING HER PARENTS BY GIVING BACK “When I mentor or interview a young adult, the first thing I look for is a liberal arts education. These students have the intangible asset of four years of looking at the big picture and considering other ways to accomplish a goal or project.”

“I grew into the person I am today, and it started at OU,” says Charis Andrews Hanberry ’88.

Charis and her husband, D. Dwayne Hanberry ’88, enjoy visiting the campus.

“I am blown away by how smart today’s students are, their great ideas, and the plans they have in place for the future,” she says. Seeing the quality of students supported her decision to designate a planned gift to Oglethorpe University.

“This is not my legacy but my parents’ legacy,” Charis says. “Making a gift out of a will is a very simple way to give back after I’m gone, without it making a current impact on my wallet. I gained so much from the OU experience: it’s important to continue that for other kids.”

A business administration major, Charis is a Quality Assurance Consultant at Turner (formerly Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.).

PUTTING OU IDEALS INTO ACTION Misty Hood Whitlock ’00 attended Oglethorpe thanks to Dr. Philip Neujahr (H) ’14, professor emeritus of philosophy. While in high school, Misty worked at the Northlake Mall Hallmark shop. Dr. Neujahr was in the store and mentioned he and his wife Dr. Vicky Weiss (H) ’14, professor emerita of English, were OU professors. He talked with Misty about Oglethorpe and encouraged her to visit. She went for Springfest and knew Oglethorpe was right for her.

Dr. Philip Tiu, associate professor of mathematics (division chair), ensured Misty graduated. She was failing a class when he diagnosed a specific learning disorder, then tutored her three times a week. Today Misty fully appreciates his dedication and vested personal interest in her success.

She now works in finance (probably to Dr. Tiu’s horror!).

An active alumna, Misty also is an OU donor. “Oglethorpe is in my will because my husband Kyle and I want to support what is important to us,” Misty says. At age 57, her fatherin-law passed away unexpectedly and did not have a will. “It was a lesson for us to create our wills so we could designate where our money will go,” she says. “A planned gift is easy, takes the burden off relatives, and we can control what we want done.”

CREATING LIFELONG IMPACT FOR STUDENTS Margaret “Maggie” Woodward Mathewes ’55 is most passionate about the commitment of OU students to make a life, not just a living. “OU produces graduates who are well-rounded, productive and can think for themselves,” Margaret says.

Maggie was greatly influenced by Dr. J. Kennedy Hodges and Dean Elgin “Mac” MacConnell. On Thursdays, there was a standing coffee hour, where students got to know and interact with all the professors.

She and her husband David were connected to higher education most of their lives. “I saw first-hand how important it is to donate because of the difference it can make in someone’s life,” she says. “There are many high-quality students who do not have the opportunity to attend college unless someone provides a scholarship. Giving back to Oglethorpe creates a lifelong impact and that is why we are involved as donors.”

As a young alumna in 1956, Margaret Woodward Mathewes donated to Oglethorpe University. “It was a small amount, but it was important to me to be engaged right away,” she says.

A chemistry major at OU, Margaret worked in a chemistry lab at The Coca-Cola Company after she graduated, one of the first women chemists at Coke.

The Measure of Commitment

Members of Oglethorpe’s Gray Stone Society share a common trait: deep personal commitment—to their families, their professions, their communities, and to education. Harald Hansen held each of these in high regard. And in like fashion, those who knew him, held him in high regard.

In 1986, Harald came to Atlanta as President and Chief Operating Officer of First Union National Bank of Georgia. Two years later he was named Chairman of First Union of Georgia Corporation. He and Betsy adopted this city as their own. Harald gave back to the community to an extraordinary degree and it was deeply personal.

Harald loved Oglethorpe, and we loved him. For more than two decades, he devoted much of his time, energy, talent, and resources to this institution.

He did that right up until the very end. “He was the very definition of a servant leader,” says Oglethorpe President Lawrence Schall. “I can’t tell you how much time Harald spent at Oglethorpe. There was a time when I thought about giving him an office between mine and our CFO’s.”

He cared deeply about us—personally and as an institution. Harald was a man of conviction, a man of faith, a man whose ethics were beyond challenge. He also was tough-minded but had a gentle way of conveying his thoughts. Harald always lifted up those around him. Through his generous and thoughtful nature, he helped us become better people ourselves.

Harald joined Oglethorpe’s Board of Trustees in 1995 and was an active, dedicated member for more than 22 years. He served as vice-chair (1999-2004) and as treasurer (2004-2013). In 2008, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Oglethorpe University and in 2013, the University honored him with a dormitory named for him and his beautiful wife, Betsy.

Harald’s reach in Atlanta went far beyond one institution. He was a key volunteer for many charitable organizations and was actively involved in each with his vision, personal commitment and ability to create transformative change. Harald mattered immensely to Atlanta. Because he valued education so highly, Harald was devoted to and served as a Trustee of his high school alma mater, The Asheville School, and on the Board of Advisors for Duke University.

Oglethorpe is profoundly grateful for having Harald as a servant leader of this university. Always respected and admired, Harald passed away March 16, 2017. He made his mark at Oglethorpe with dedicated leadership, unwavering integrity, deep personal values, and heartfelt philanthropic commitment. Staying true to his lifelong commitment to education, Harald was a friend, advocate and devotee of Oglethorpe University. He will be missed and remembered.
