BEATS 'N EATS By The Eagle Eye Committee Distance learning can’t stop Oak Grove’s annual Beats ‘N Eats! On the 9TH and 10TH of October, ASB put together an amazing two-part video of your fellow eagles showing off their talents. From vocals to prodigies, OG really has it all! Beats ‘N Eats has been a continuous success at Oak Grove, ever since the very first launch about 13 years ago. Joseph Le, an Oak Grove ASB alumni, originally set off this tradition! Students, staff, clubs, and so much more come together to enjoy performances and delicious food sold by Oak Grove’s clubs! Despite the non-traditional school year we are all going through, many memories are brought back from previous years. Although the audience could not see the performances in person, they still showed a tremendous amount of support in the live online chats! Oak Grove is filled with talent. A word from our Day 1 performer, Jasmitha Tamil-Mohan "My experience for the fall virtual Beats ‘N Eats as a dancer was very fun. I saw the post on Instagram first and at that moment I decided I wanted to showcase my love for dance. At first, I didn’t feel prepared. I was nervous because I couldn’t get the moves right, but as I practiced every day, I saw improvement. My sister who filmed me had to take multiple takes on the video but finally, we got the final video made. I coordinated my costume as well as the choreography so it matches my song. My family was also very supportive and encouraged me to take part in this event. They premiered it with a very high tech countdown, guests, and introduction transitions; it was highly impressive. "

With the help of Activities Director, Mr. Chung, I wanted to create a modern display that was much needed for the school. So it is my pleasure to announce the publishing of the first ever Oak Grove ASB Website. This website will be resource-based and made for the convenience of all students, staff, and parents. The purpose of this website was to highlight the stupendous work that Oak Grove is doing.
Currently under-maintenance, you’ll be able to find ASB events/activities, up-to-date announcements, class pages, club information, and resources! Soon, you’ll see pictures and videos of past events, updated pages, and have access to a schoolwide store where you can purchase class shirts and student store apparel! By Frank Pfeilsticker With college applications making a buzz around this time of the year, Oak Grove’s senior class held their 2021 College Webinar to talk about all things higher education! Plenty of useful tips and answers were shared during that one-hour session, and over 45 attendees truly enjoyed the newfound information they were receiving. Personally, I found this webinar extremely helpful and am so grateful for the guest speakers and student government officers that made the event run smoothly. Something that I thought was really assuring was that this event was open to all students and not just seniors; the inclusivity and overall topic is what made the turnout of 2021’s College Webinar so successful.
My favorite part of the webinar (and probably the most eye-opening part as well) was hearing the success stories of Oak Grove High School’s alumni and their journeys toward getting accepted into very well-known, prestigious universities. It is very pleasing to know that people who grow up in the same environment as you are able to accomplish such great feats! Throughout the course of this event, the guest speakers guided the attendees through the college application process and answered questions that we had to a great extent. Although Oak Grove’s normal College Week was disrupted during these difficult times, the class of 2021 did a wonderful job adapting to this unfamiliar environment and executed this webinar with great enthusiasm. Being able to interact with them was such an amazing opportunity and I hope educational events like these can be implemented again in the future! I cannot wait for what’s to come!
By: 2022 Class Board The Class of 2022 hosted an Among Us game night through Discord, free and open to all Oak Grove students and staff looking to relieve some stress as the end of the second grading period nears. This was the second game night hosted by the Juniors in hopes of encouraging students to come together virtually.
Junior Cecilia Tran commented, “I liked the event a lot. It was a great break from all the stress of school, and was the best opportunity to kill some teachers and friends. My favorite part of the night was meeting some new people in school that I’ve never even talked to. Among us was a great opportunity to talk to people without being awkward.” Some Oak Grove teachers even stepped out of their comfort zones by introducing themselves to new technology to connect with their students: “Another fun part was playing with our staff and seeing how they get embarrassed when they are caught red handed as the imposter. Either way it was a fun event.” The Class of 2022 hopes to host similar events in the future and looks forward to meeting those who attend.
By 2023 Class Board Serving as a perfect medium to allow students to experience positive peer-to-peer interaction and bring out Oak Grove’s Halloween spirit, class of 2023 hosted a virtual escape room event! Being our first virtual bonding event, we greatly prepared for it to be a fun and pleasant experience for everyone. Thanks to our amazing participants who created a competitive yet exciting playing environment. It is safe to say that the escape room was a success!
Out of 11 teams, 7 left us in awe as they reached victory with their impeccable teamwork in the span of 1 hour! As a treat, the top 3 teams which include Jacob Sayos & Chandler Truong, Aaron Tran & Brandon Lopez, and Isaac Romero & Jasmine Wu, will all be receiving goodie bags delivered to them! Hi Class of 2024! We're very excited to be your class officers during distance learning this year!! We all are very dedicated and excited to make our first year of high school amazing! Even though we won't be able to see each other in person we still are working very hard to plan safe and fun events that bring us together! By Rhea Dhanowa For a democracy to function effectively, the power and civil responsibility of all its eligible voters must be exercised. Still, the majority of young Americans tend to sit out on election day. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that in the 2016 Presidential Election, only 39.4% of 18 to 24 year olds voted. By contrast, 70.1% of those aged 60 to 74 voted. In other words, our grandparents are making the decisions that will impact our future. And this trend of low voter turnout amongst the youth is nothing new; we’ve continuously lagged behind other age groups since we were granted the right to vote. The low engagement from young voters is not some random happenstance though; this is a multifaceted problem. From a lack of knowledge on the subject to the troubles of unclear voter laws, Millennials and Gen Zs face various roadblocks in the voting process –– far more than their older counterparts. For instance, while older folks tend to have a set and stable work schedule, the rising generation is balancing college, work, and everything in between. This makes voting an afterthought rather than a priority. However, there are some young voters who choose not to vote; a choice that stems from their cynical outlook on elections.
In fact, twenty-six percent of eligible voters (that have missed at least one national election) said they didn’t vote because they thought the results would bring no change. While this sentiment isn’t necessarily unjustified, it is misguided. Take the 2012 Presidential Election for example. The Millennial generation was largely credited with President Barack Obama’s victory. A recent analysis done by the Center for Research and Information on Civic Learning and Engagement at Tufts University shows that if Mitt Romney had been able to split the youth vote with Obama, he would’ve won the election. The youth vote was decisive here and it will be just as pivotal this coming election, which is why young voters must vote. If you are eighteen years or older, you have until November 3rd to register (in-person) and cast your vote, either in-person or by mail. If you are under the age of eighteen, there are still plenty of ways you can help. Sixteen and seventeen year-olds, you can pre-register to vote so you are ready for our next election. Otherwise, you can spread important information about voting, educate yourself on the matter, and encourage your friends and family to vote. Remember, your vote is your voice. Our democracy cannot function without civic engagement from all. We have the power to make a change; one that will not happen if we continue to ignore the most effective tool at our disposal –– our vote.
