Spreading love during quarantine, Interact hosted their annual Valentine's Day Gram fundraiser!

“As people are isolated, we still wanted to provide students the opportunity to give a sweet surprise towards their loved ones,” Xavier Chavez states. You were able to order boxes courtesy of Interact, which contained mixed goods. Some of these items included roses, lollipops, a customized letter, and add ons!

From cute stuffed animals to packaged cookies, each gram was packed with love. You had the option of having the box picked up or delivered to a person of your choice. Whether you wanted to remain anonymous or be transparent with your recipient, the Valentine's Day Gram was your way to make someone feel special!

Interact would like to thank those who ordered a box, as the funds raised will be going towards our annual community and international projects: COMBATTING WITH CARE, (which centered around COVID19 relief), and FEEDING THE FUTURE, (meals for malnourished youth in Yemen).

Interact hopes to continue spreading love throughout the year, and remember eagles, Service Above Self!

For the Valentine’s season, the Anime Club launched their first fundraiser and sold two varieties of Valentine’s grams for their members. Both grams contained anime characters of the buyer’s choice and the more expensive grams even offered original art of certain characters! The fundraiser was a huge success thanks to our wonderful members and we cannot express enough of our gratitude towards them. They truly continue to help us “Make Way for Anime” and bring out the best of this year.

Anime Club promises to keep pushing forward and provide greater opportunities and social experience. They also want to give a very special thank you to our Vice President, Faith Rino (@noodles_for_nobody), and our Treasurer, Jaquelin La (@jacquelin.la), both of whom made this event possible through their diligent effort and creativity. Here are a few words from them:

ASB spent Valentine’s Day this year sharing the loving spirit by sending out festive and warmhearted cards to a handful of randomly selected students from each class! Seen all over social media, students shared

their personalized card for everyone to see. ASB and all class boards hoped to brightened up our community through these small activities during the given circumstances. Happy Valentine's Day!

CROSS-CLUB COLLAB WITH A MEDICAL TWIST! Written By OG Pre-Med

On February 26, 2021, Oak Grove’s PreMed Club teamed up with Santa Teresa’s Medical Club to host a game of Codenames (medical edition)! Upon arriving at the Zoom meeting, the atmosphere was very calm and friendly. There were some nice discussions between members of both clubs before, during, and after the game, which was definitely nice to see considering that ST and OG are known to be hard rivals (at least, on the football field). Before starting the game, members had the chance to participate in a quick icebreaker and express how they were feeling at the particular moment.

The club members were glad to see that many people wrote that they were feeling happy. During these stressful times with school and other priorities, it is nice to know that people are still doing well.

So what is Codenames? It is a card game in which two teams compete to reveal their respective secret agents through the one-word clues given to them by the spymasters.

For the duration of the game, OG students competed against ST students, with the presidents of each club serving as the two spymasters.

Three total rounds of Codenames were played, and both Oak Grove and Santa Teresa won one round each. The second round was accidentally reset before the game could be completed, but there were no hard feelings, and everyone was understanding of the error! Overall, it was an entertaining event, and it was very nice to be able to collaborate with pre-med clubs from other schools!

OGVSU TAKES ON TẾT Written By OGVSU Lunar New Year has just passed, and the Vietnamese Student Union (VSU) brought new and unique ways to celebrate this past month! Lunar New Year is a celebration of the new year according to the lunar calendar. To put in perspective, Americans traditionally celebrate the solar new year when the Earth makes one complete orbit around the sun. The Lunar New Year is celebrated when the Earth’s moon has just completed 12 full cycles. The moon’s cycles vary every year, hence why Lunar New Year falls on a different day each year.

Additionally, the Chinese and Vietnamese share 12 zodiac animals. Within every 12 years, there is a different animal representing different characteristics. This year is the Year of the Ox, which symbolizes hard work and endurance! Overall, this holiday is celebrated by many Asian cultures and countries, such as the Vietnamese, Chinese, Korean, Tibetan, Mongolian, and more! In a typical year, you may see students and staff dressed in traditional Vietnamese dresses, called áo dài, to ring in the new year.

The VSU typically sets up a stage with a traditional Vietnamese board game, paintings of scrolls hung up, Vietnamese music playing in the background, and lucky red envelopes being handed out.

We even had a traditional lion dance perform at our school last year! Due to the pandemic, however, people were limited in how they could celebrate this holiday safely. The VSU Board made a special appearance in the weekly morning announcements to present history and background information on the holiday. We were all dressed in our áo dài for the recording and held up red envelopes at the end!

In addition to this, we had a five-day countdown leading up to the Lunar New Year on our Instagram page where one to two board members talked about their favorite New Year’s traditions and memories. Some of our board members also attended a Zoom social event where ten different VSU’s across the Bay Area came together to play games and bond over Lunar New Year traditions. Even if you do not celebrate Lunar New Year, we hope that you might have learned something new and enjoyed the festivities. During Lunar New Year, the Vietnamese traditionally wish good luck to others, and so, we wish you all a healthy, prosperous, and happy new year!

CULTURE, DANCE, ART WHILE PERSEVERING IN A PANDEMIC

What has the Folklórico ASSET's Program looked like during the lockdown "shelter in place"? The following are interactions that explain it best: Maestra: Find a space in or outside of the house where you can see me and follow my steps. A bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, garage and\or patio.

Students: But what about the shoes and skirt? The floor is slippery, wood or tile. The shoes can scratch.

Maestra: Let's get you a plywood to dance on. Let's try steps in place for now. I have a wooden platform.

Students: Skirt work? The room is too small, my bed is in the way, I'm knocking over things with my skirt.

Maestra: Let's try arm movements, no skirt.

Let's try the patio. Let's try the garage. Let's try the kitchen.

The COVID-19 Shelter in Place has been difficult for students attending Folklórico, but one thing that I can say is that the Oak Grove students continue to come back and create unique, innovative ways to make it work.

December 2020 Student: "Things are hard at home and I'm not able to continue Folklórico."

Maestra: “Go ahead and take some time off and we will talk after the break.”

January 2021 Student: "Things are still difficult but I want to finish well, when are the pictures? When are dance videos due? I have been practicing using the Youtube videos and I can't wait to share" Maestra: “I remember that day you came for your Folklórico gear, how happy you were to join and be a part of it. I am so excited for you to keep going.”

Life for all has changed dramatically but hope and perseverance have become a powerful source during these difficult times.

It is a place to stop by on zoom or whatsapp to get connected. Those that are serious about participating, receive a monthly box, you must commit to checking in once a week via WhatsApp or zoom.

Black History Month Written By August Pfeilsticker and Rhea Dhanowa

Dr. Carter G. Woodson first established “Black History Week” with the aim of celebrating and recognizing the overlooked accomplishments of the Black community in 1926. This week later expanded into the full month of February, which made it into the Black History month as it is known today. The Eagle Eye Committee thought it would be best to commemorate this month by acknowledging countless key Black figures whose work changed our world for the better.

Philip Emeagwali, also recognized as “The Bill Gates of Africa,” was best known for the invention of the world’s first massively-parallel supercomputer.

The Nigerian computer scientist invented the World’s Fastest Computer despite having dropped out of school at the mere age of 14. Despite this, Emaegwali, continued learning at home and went on to attend three different universities. He acquired master’s degrees in environmental engineering, marine engineering, and applied mathematics; as well as, a BS in mathematics.

He won the Gordon Bell Prize for his profound invention of computers, which are used to forecast weather and make predictions about global warming in modern society.

Another invention that is seen in everyday life which was made by a Black inventor was the three-light traffic light.

Garrett Augustus Morgan initially worked as a sewing-machine repairman but soon became head of multiple companies including a publishing company. He kept up his interest with inventing and, over the years, created a smoke hood and traffic light. His invention was innovated upon and is still used to this day.

Behind the invention of the home security system was Marie Van Brittan Brown, a nurse who worked to create and patent a device that served as the template for security systems today. She was challenged by the time it took police officers to arrive at her home and thought up the idea of a home security system. Brown noticed how CCTV cameras were used in hospitals and applied them to the household as a measure of security. She applied for her patent in 1966 which was approved in 1969.

After her recognition in the New York Times, her work was awarded by the National Scientists Committee. Brown’s security invention is still used and built upon today in buildings such as apartments, stores, and banks.

COVID-19 Vaccine Run Down Written By Winston Vo In early 2020, a novel coronavirus, dubbed COVID-19, dominated the world and its inhabitants. Within a quarter of a year, it grew from an unremarkable epidemic in Wuhan, China to a world-wide pandemic.

In the midst of the crisis, medical experts deemed it necessary to make adjustments to our quotidian lives. Thus, safety measures were enforced, news networks and official health organizations educated the masses on protection methods, and researchers and scientists made commendable efforts bringing an end to the plague. Now, a year after quarantine started, despite the various changes our lives have undergone, the end is imminent.

For COVID-19 vaccinations have begun.

Several vaccines are in testing, but only two have been officially authorized by FDA for emergency use (as of Feb. 18). The PfizerBioNTech, with a 95% efficacy rate, and Moderna COVID-19, with a 94.1% efficacy rate, vaccines are separated into two doses with three-week and four-week gaps, respectively; however, they will be ineffective if there is more than a six-week gap between each shot. Immunity longevity has not been confirmed yet. For now, the minimum age requirement for the vaccines is age 16 or older (ages 16+ for Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine and ages 18+ for Moderna vaccine), but extensive testing and development is being done for younger ages. Unlike the previous vaccines that injected weakened live viruses in an attempt to develop immunity, these new vaccines offer a more ingenious approach and is named mRNA vaccines.

To achieve immunity, they give instructions for our cells to develop a protein similar to the novel coronavirus. When a recipient's immune system detects the unknown intruder, it will respond by making antibodies to fight it, and remember the recipe. Then, the body disposes of the mRNA. Furthermore, an added benefit is the recipient does not contract COVID-19, which means it is safe.However, not all bodies welcome foreign substances. Therefore, the vaccine's recipients may experience mild, temporary side effects, which includes pain and swelling at the location of the shot, fatigue, muscle pain, and a feeling of sickness. These typically occur three days after the shot and last one to two days. As a safety precaution, the recipient stays for fifteen minutes under professional surveillance in case of severe or immediate reactions. As local vaccine supplies are limited, distributions must be systematic.

The vaccine will be given to the most vulnerable first. In our area, distribution is divided up into phases, two as of now and more to come. Phase 1A is currently the target of vaccinations. It includes healthcare workers and patients and staff of long-term care services. Depending on supply availability, members of Phase 2A, including seniors, emergency service workers, agriculture and food workers, teachers and childcare workers, and emergency service workers, could also be vaccinated. As concerns about allergies and reactions arise, major health providers have given information regarding the concern.

Most people could receive the vaccine regardless of common allergies, but those who are allergic to the vaccine's ingredients (e.g., polyethylene glycol, polysorbate, etc.) should not be vaccinated. In addition, those who have had a history of allergic reactions to vaccines could still be vaccinated and will be monitored for thirty minutes for severe reactions, but the relationship between previous reactions and present reactions has yet to be established.

So far, the outlook looks promising. With vaccinations on the way, the world will slowly recover from its losses during the COVID-19 period. Life will return to normal. School sessions will be held in classrooms, and lunches will be spent with friends; Distance learning will be no more. Social and physical contact and all that quarantine deprived us of will return. Until it does, keep safe and do not forget to follow safety measures.

Asian Hate Crimes Written By Trang Ly and Vivian Pham Anti-asian hate crimes have been increasing across major U.S cities since the early stages of the pandemic. According to California State University’s Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism, there were a total of 122 incidents of hate crimes targeting AAPI (Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in 16 of the most highly populated cities in 2020 making it almost a 150% increase over the past year. Instances worldwide have resulted in hospitalization, fear among the Asian American community, and even death. Although statistics of anti-Asian hate crimes have been on the rise, violence against Asian Americans is not new. Back in 1852, over 20,000 Chinese immigrants entered San Francisco looking for jobs due to a crop failure in China. The new arrivals resulted in a breakout of violence between white miners and the Chinese. Soon after, California enforced the Foriegn Miners Tax of $3 a month targeting Chinese miners in May 1852. Following an 1854 court case, it was ruled that the Chinese were suspended from testifying in court making it impossible for them to

report or claim justice for the violence against them. The Chinese Exclusion Act, passed by Congress in 1882 to terminate the influx of Chinese immigrants, prohibited Chinese immigration to the United States for 10 years.

After World War II, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Executive Order 9066, forcing over 110,000 Japanese Americans to relocate to internment camps. Japanese Americans who had no relation to the bombing of Pearl Harbor were affected due to their Japanese heritage. The deep-rooted racism and war hysteria caused the death of over 1,000 people in those camps.

The casual racism and increase in hate crimes against Asian Americans is rooted in the history of the Asian American experience.

However, change cannot happen if racism against Asians continues to be normalized.

During the early stages of the pandemic, the Trump administration and other White House officials referred to COVID-19 as the “Chinese virus” or “Kung-Flu”. As the coronavirus originated in Wuhan, China, Asian Americans have automatically been blamed for the global pandemic, correlating the ethnicity to the deadly virus.

A hate tracker, Stop AAPI Hate, has reported over 2,800 acts of discrimination towards Asian Americans from March and December 2020. Out of the total hate crimes, 90% consisted of verbal harassment while 9% were physical assault. Many victims were non-Chinese Asians who were attacked as they were mistakenly identified as Chinese descent. The uptick in hate crimes includes countless attacks on innocent Asian elders. Eighty-four year old, Vicha Ratanapakdee was murdered when he was slammed to the ground in San Francisco by Antoine Watson. Watson later pleaded “not guilty” to his charges. In another case, a 70-year-old grandmother from Oakland was assaulted and robbed while visiting a bank. Another Vietnamese grandmother (64) was robbed $1,000 in cash during the Lunar New Year season.

There has also been a rising concern in Oakland’s Chinatown, with over 20 cases of assault, robbery, and vandalization (most being Asian American businesses). These are only a handful of incidents reported, as the number of unreported cases and new cases cannot be regularly tracked.

Here are some ways to become an ally to the Asian American community:

1. Educate and become aware/updated 2.

Report incidents of hate (StopAAPIHate.org) 3. Call your legislators & ask what is being done to support the AAPI community 4. Amplify the voices of AAPI and DO NOT stay silent 5. Continue to support minority businesses!

The rise of Asian American hate-crimes affect not only the lives of Asian Americans but all of society.

Fighting xenophobia and racism will not be easy, but it is a battle needs us to unite as one, to protect the elders, culture, and identity of Asian Americans. In an effort to create awareness, several Asian American organizations such as Stop Asian Hate, Stop APPI Hate, Next Shark, and more have been an outlet for Asian Americans to report the violence occurring in their communities.

Despite these larger efforts, there is still more every individual can do to help.
