Written By C/O 2021 OGHS ASB You probably have heard by now, but OG ASB hosted the final event of the year for the Class of 2021 on Saturday, May 22nd at the football field. The event consisted of mini-games, a food truck, dancing, singing, the traditional Homecoming Parade and Court, and ended with a final sunset to close off our senior year. Our Homecoming Parade consisted of 4 Homecoming Court Nominees with Jasmine Dinh and Thomas Kadmusow taking home the title of Homecoming King and Queen! The event ended with the class of 2021 winning the FANTASTICS trophy and an emotional slideshow and speech given by our Senior Class President, Michelle Lu, and ASB President, Britney Nguyen. On behalf of ASB and the 2021 Class Board: Thank you to everyone for coming out to our final event of the year. It would not have been possible without the help of our freshmen, sophomore, and junior class boards, our staff and supervision team, or our activities director, Mr. Chung, who worked tirelessly to make this event possible. We are so grateful for all of the behind-the-scenes work that was put into making this event as successful as it was. To everyone: “You can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.” -C.S. Lewis To our seniors: As the sun began to set, the event came to an end, and so did the final

chapter of our high school careers. To our seniors, we know that you’ve worked hard these past four years, but continue to work hard in the next chapters of your lives. Be proud of yourselves and cherish the memories you’ve made as an Oak Grove Eagle. As we’ve said at the Final Sunset, 2021 is literally the most hard-working, motivated, and welcoming class there is. Even through the most mentally challenging of times, you still get up every day and that’s already an accomplishment all in itself. Even through all of these times, we would not change the world because of our Oak Grove Class of 2021. Never has a class won FANTASTICS 3 years in a row, and every year through your participation, spirit, motivation, and communication we’re able to pull through. Class of 2021 continuously carries through these four years: With our science research students winning district, county, and state competitions, our color guard and band being one of the best around here, our cheer team being one of the best and largest around, our football team winning league every year, our girls and boys basketball teams both winning leagues and going to playoffs, our clubs going stronger than ever even with the physical distance. We could legitimately go on and on. Thank you for all the friendships that we’ve made over the past four years, we

hope you all continue to reach out to each other and keep the incredible bond 2021 has. We can’t wait to hear from you in the future as we know you will all do amazing things and we can’t wait to share all of our accomplishments at our 10-year reunion so see you all then. To the best class ever, we were definitely robbed of our full four years but we made the best of it and still came out on top. We are so proud of you and thank you for everything. Once an eagle, always an eagle.

EAC CAESAR CHAVEZ CLEAN UP Written By Environmental Action Club This Cesar Chavez Day, Oak Grove High School students and community members alike spent the day cleaning up Oak Grove High School and its surrounding area. This event was the second in a series of trash clean-ups led by Oak Grove’s Environmental Action Club (otherwise known as the EAC). Their previous in-person event was a similar clean-up on Oak Grove’s campus which was held on Martin Luther King Jr Day. Both events were held by the EAC in conjunction with Saratoga High School’s Matt Torrens. Volunteers spent two hours cleaning and ended up filling more than ten trash bags of litter! Co-President of the Environmental Action Club, Lilyanna Salinas, says that “our goal as a club is to just help the environment. We are welcoming anyone and everyone to join us in this goal, whether that's by joining our trash clean-ups or just by educating themselves by attending

our meetings. We want to do similar events to our Cesar Chavez and Martin Luther King Jr clean-ups in the future and hope to see some more volunteers!” If you are interested in helping out and joining the movement to save the environment, you can follow the Environmental Action Club @oakgroveeac on Instagram to learn more!

Written By Oak Grove Key Club On Saturday, April 24, Oak Grove Key Club sent nineteen volunteers to beautify and clean Rubino Park. This event was hosted by the City of San Jose's Parks, Recreation, and Neighborhood Services, so there were a large range of ages ready to volunteer. This was OGKC’s first in-person service event of the 2021-2022 term and after the temporary pause of in-person events due to COVID-19 safety measures. It was a busy day for volunteers, as they did various activities, which included picking up litter, weeding out plants and layering much around the park. Although it was a sunny Saturday morning, volunteers earned four hours for a full shift, totalling in 75.5 service hours that day. Oak Grove Key Club will have various volunteer events for any and all Oak Grove students, so make sure to stay updated with them for service opportunities!

INTERARKEYCEF's Chalk Walk

Written By InterArKeyCef

Oak Grove’s favorite service clubs are back! Interact, ARK, Key Club, and UNICEF come together once again to kick off the 2021-2022 school year with a chalk walk. Students came together on the Monday afternoon before OG’s first day to chalk up the student parking lot. Colorful images and encouraging words were created in hopes of brightening up campus while creating an inviting space for students. “The chalk walk brought out all of the creativity of my fellow key clubbers, I enjoyed it!”, says Ashley Benitez. During the first week of school, chalk images were enjoyed by students, staff, and more! InterArKeyCef hopes you all have a great school year and look forward to their next collaboration!

Written By OGHS 2023 Class of 2023 recently hosted a Time Capsule and Movie Night hybrid event where Oak Grove students had the chance to write letters to their future selves and enjoy an in-theater exclusive movie, Black Widow. Serving as a way for students to relish their last days of summer, the event took place on August 6th from 7:3010:30PM on the hill where popcorn and milk tea were sold. Before the movie began, students were each handed a writing utensil and sheet of paper to write their time capsule letters using the writing prompts provided to them. Each individual’s letter was collected and is to be returned during 2023’s Senior Sunrise! Finally, the captivating and highlyanticpatated movie started to play as students began getting cozy and comfortable in their blankets. The night ended with hot popcorn, cold drinks and happy smiles!

F O L O I L R ' S P A G ASB & MR. CHU N I R U T NG A E F HOW IT STARTED:

Mr. Chung had an idea to recreate a KPOP music video that featured the words, "yellow card" to promote ASB cards. Unfortunately, ASB turned the idea down but wanted to prank Mr. Chung by liking his idea. However, Mr. Chung had something up his sleeve for April Fool's...ASB President Britney Nguyen soon caught on, and worked as a double agent during this prank. Enjoy these text screenshots from left to right!

Written By Zach Wong Throughout the summer, the Boys’ and Girls’ Tennis teams continued their practice by opening an ASSETs program to the community. Since it was open to players outside of Oak Grove, students from surrounding high and intermediate schools came to play each week. It was a great way for new players to learn the basics and proper techniques before the season started. Returning players were able to work on their form while having a coach to guide them through it. Practices were not as strict, since the team was off-season, and were only twice a week. Practices started with conditioning followed by practicing in three different stations; serves/returns, volleys, and forehand/backhand. Our coach and team captains would monitor the courts and help out anyone who needed improvement or if they had questions. After practice, courts were left open for any players who would like to stay longer. We ended summer tennis with a potluck and casual mixed tournament. Summer tennis may be over, but the girls season continues on August 9 and the boys season continues in spring! If you have any questions, comments, and concerns, contact @oghstennis for more information.

Written By OGVSU For the Vietnamese community, the month of April is known as Black April. On April 30th, 1975, the Fall of Saigon transpired and resulted in millions of Vietnamese fleeing Vietnam to escape the Communist regime. The Vietnam War ended with North Vietnam taking over South Vietnam. Post Paris Peace Accords, the tension between North and South Vietnam remained evidently among the country. Citizens from Southern Vietnam lived with fear as they predicted their hometown, Saigon would be directly attacked. The Southerners’ unwanted expectations turned into reality on April 29th, when General Nguyen Van Toan invaded and conquered the city. Saigon was attacked with rockets and heavy artillery, ensuing the destruction of Saigon’s only airport and most convenient escape route. Had that been their only way out, they would’ve been stranded, but they were able to resort to “Operation Frequent Wind,” the back up plan created by the Americans. Henry Kissinger gave the order to initiate the plan and from there, and the helicopter escape plan that used the work of American soldiers and their South Vietnam comrades took action.

“Operation Frequent Wind” still stands as the largest helicopter evacuation today. After one day of North Vietnam’s remorseless attacks, South Vietnamese President Duong Van Minh, who had only been in office for 3 days prior, announced their surrender. Although he begged for a peaceful transfer of power, the North Vietnamese ignored his pleas and continued the invasion to the city. On April 30th, 1975, President Minh made this public statement: "I declare the Saigon government...completely dissolved at all levels." The city of Saigon had officially fallen. Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City, after North Vietnam's Communist leader. The Fall of Saigon was a very significant point in history as it marked the end of the Vietnam War and the start of Vietnam under Communist Rule. Today, some Vietnamese people choose to use Vietnam’s southern flag, the yellow flag with red stripes to represent all of the sacrifices that their ancestors made. April 30th will continue to be a date that Vietnamese people take to mourn and remember, as generations of those with Vietnamese background have been changed forever.

Cinco De Mayo THE ANNIVERSARY OF TH E B ATTLE OF P UEBLA

Written By Otila Torres Cinco de Mayo, (Spanish: “Fifth of May”) a day to celebrate with music, art, culture, dance and HISTORY.... The ASSET’s Folklórico Club at OGHS decided on that day to take the opportunity to share information about the history and misconceptions of Cinco de Mayo to our online friends on Instagram, perform our favorite dances from Jalisco, México and showcase on social media/ youtube. We gave back to our community through charity and donations, played loteria (Mexican BINGO) and lastly we imparted heritage to our younger generation by reading stories to the elementary school (this year we chose Sakamoto Elementary)

Against impossible obstacles, the only thing that seemed certain was defeat. Resistance to the French seemed unfathomable and yet in the city of Puebla, México, not only did those Mexican soldiers resist, but they drove back the French in triumph. It was this great battle of Puebla that was the precursor to the celebration of Cinco de Mayo (Fifth of May). The date has become an important one for Mexican nationals, so much so that celebration has migrated into the United States. As a reminder: Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day as many believe. Mexican independence was declared some 50 years before the Battle of Puebla and is celebrated every year on September 16. Over the years, the fifth of May has evolved into a much bigger holiday in the U.S. than in Mexico and with that…. It has become a celebration of cultural pride and history: Viva México! Viva America!

Via Instagram OGHS Folklórico ASSET’s Program shared important details regarding the date and anniversary of the “Battle of Puebla.” The date is observed to commemorate the Mexican Army's victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862, under the Check out our Youtube page for our Cinco de leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza. Hey Eagles! We hope you all are enjoying your return to school on campus! On the first Friday of school, we held our first chill on the hill in almost one and a half years! Since it was a hot day, we brought out umbrellas and water balloons for a lunchtime mini-game. New to campus this year, leadership has opened the Q1 Marketplace inside of their classroom, Q1. Check them out on the other side of the gates next to the book-room! Lastly, our next Beats ‘N Eats is coming back on Friday, September 17th! In case you’re not familiar with it, Beats ‘N Eats is our biannual after-school event where you can eat food while watching performances and listening to music. Bring your friends (not exclusive to Oak Grove) for a chill evening on the hill! We’re excited for this school year and look forward to bringing you more events through it all :D - 2022 ASB

I want to thank everyone in the Sophomore, Junior, and Senior classes who attended or participated in their class events over the summer!
