CEO REPORT

We celebrate another successful Summer season at Ocean Grove Bowling Club, and it has been fantastic to see our venue full of activity, from social gatherings to barefoot bowls. Many barefoot bowlers have tried their luck on the green, and we are incredibly fortunate to have our committed Bowling Members volunteer their time to help coordinate these events. Their dedication ensures that everyone, from first-time players to seasoned bowlers, enjoy the experience whilst on holidays.

Excitement continues to build as we edge closer to the Grand Opening of our undercover bowling structure in August 2025. This state-of-the-art facility will provide year-round access to bowls, regardless of weather conditions, and will be a game-changer for both our club and the broader community. We can’t wait to share this milestone with you all.

Our new menu has elevated our dining experience this Summer, with a fantastic response from members and visitors regarding our exciting variety of dishes. A huge thank you to our talented chefs and hospitality team for their passion and hard work.

We are grateful for the ongoing support of our community and look forward to strengthening our relationships with local sporting clubs and community groups throughout 2025. Here’s to an exciting year ahead!

MEET THE TEAM

to join OGBC was driven by its strong family-oriented values and commitment to work-life balancetwo things he holds in high regard.

A Life Well-Travelled

aOriginally from the UK, Oz made the life-changing move to Australia nearly 20 years ago. His career has taken him across the globe, cooking in different kitchens and soaking up diverse cultures along the way. But of all his adventures, meeting his wife remains one of his greatest highlights.

What’s Next?

With his 50th birthday on the horizon, Oz has set his sights on climbing Ben Nevis, the highest peak in Scotland - weather permitting, of course!

Words to Live By

A firm believer in lifelong learning, Oz’s personal mantra is simple but powerful: “You’re never too old to learn.” He also reminds us to never take life for granted because we only get one shot at it.

Survival Essentials

If stranded on an island, Oz would keep things simple - he’d take a radio to listen to the footy, his dogs for company, and sunscreen “to protect his bald head”.

Fun Facts

▪ Go-to song?: Fast Car – Luke Combs

▪ Dream superpower?: Invisibility (so the kids couldn’t find him!)

▪ Most loved sport?: AFL (Go Cats in 2025!)

Oz’s journey and passion for food make him a valued part of the OGBC family. Be sure to say hello next time you’re at the club - and don’t miss out on the new menu, launched last month!

BURNSIDE TOURNAMENT

Tyson Cromie (Ocean Grove) and Jack Lewis (Engadine) represented Australia in the prestigious Burnside Pairs Tournament held at the Burnside Bowling Club in Christchurch, New Zealand. The pair travelled across the ditch on Wednesday, January 15, with Thursday a dedicated practice day before the competition took place on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

After a weekend of bowls was completed, the boys finished with a record of 4 wins and 4 losses. They returned home on Monday, January 20, having gained valuable experience while competing as part of the Australian development team. This event provided an excellent opportunity to further develop their skills on the international stage. With hopefully many more opportunities to come.

GBR CHAMPIONSHIPS & OCEAN GROVE SUCCESS

Ocean Grove bowlers have made a strong impact across multiple events so far this season.

In the GBR Championships, the following Ocean Grove players secured titles and will now compete at the State Champions Week in April:

Men's Fours: Craig Rippon, Mick West, Alan Drury, Brad Pavey

Men’s Pairs: Peter Loe & Brad Pavey

Ladies’ Pairs: Margaret White & Faye Richardson

Ladies’ Triples: Jen Le Cerf (playing in a composite team)

At the Victorian Region Sides Championships played in Ballarat in January, Ocean Grove players played a key role in representing Geelong Bowls Region in the Silver Tier competition.

Ocean Grove Representatives:

Ladies: Faye Richardson, Jenny Keep, Jen Le Cerf, Sue Collins, Maddison Jacobs, Hayley O’Reilly. Men: Brad Pavey, Zak Abro, Wayne Frith, Tyson Cromie, Max Rowley, Alan Callow

The Ladies’ team finished second in their section with two wins from three games.

The Men’s team won their section and secured promotion to the Gold Tier and went on to finish runners-up in the Silver Tier final.

Congratulations to all Ocean Grove representatives on their outstanding performances!

GEELONG GIANTS

The Geelong Giants triumphed in the U18 Junior Provincial Championships held at Sebastopol Bowls Club in Ballarat, ending a 14-year title drought. Competing against 14 region squads from across Victoria, the Giants fielded two sides: Giants Blue and Giants Gold, with a total of 18 players representing the region. Giants Gold went undefeated in three sectional rounds, secured a semi-final win against the Northern Flyers, and clinched the championship by defeating Bendigo in the final.

Ocean Grove was well represented, with Herbie Clark and Ryan McCalman in Giants Blue and Mia O'Reilly and our adopted Grover Koby Cromie in Giants Gold. While Giants Blue showcased incredible potential despite their younger roster, they narrowly missed progressing to the semi-finals.

Congratulations to all Giants players for their outstanding performance and for bringing home the prestigious "Flapper Family Shield".

OGBC JUNIORS

TAKE THEIR FIRST PENNANT WIN

Ryan McCalman and Herbie Clark are two up-and-coming bowlers at the Ocean Grove Bowling Club, participating in both the Junior Bowls Academy and Saturday Pennant.

The Junior Bowls Academy sessions take place every Monday at 5pm, in preparation for their Saturday Pennant games each weekend. Both players are working hard to develop their skills with the goal of competing at higher levels in the sport in years to come.

Their progress was highlighted by their first rink win against Clifton Springs, which ended with a narrow 16-15 victory, followed by their first overall win against St Leonards, a thrilling 34-33 result. It has been a very interesting season for the 2 boys, with byes, walkovers, heat outs, a drawn first game, a win and a couple of close losses.

They currently sit 4th on the ladder and are dreaming of playing finals. These early successes mark important milestones in their bowling journey at Ocean Grove Bowls Club.

GEELONG JETS

Junior BPL Qualifier Wrap-Up

The heat was on – literally - when the Geelong Jets Junior BPL Challenge Qualifier took place on January 4th under scorching 35-degree conditions.

A massive congratulations to Chanel Chakouch (St John’s Park, NSW), Charlie Boswood (Kyabram), and Koby Cromie (Yarrawonga) for claiming the title!

They faced off in a thrilling final against Jack Lennecke, Billie Lennecke, and Micah Oswin (Victoria BC).

Despite the 8-4 and 6-1 scoreline, the game was much closer than it appeared, with every shot hotly contested.

This talented trio has now earned the honour of representing the Geelong Jets at BPL21 in the Junior BPL Challenge. They’ll head to Moama on February 20th and 21st to compete against other franchises, aiming to secure the title of BPL Junior Challenge Champions.

Good luck, team!

The Jets are cheering you on every step of the way!
