he organisers of the 2017 Darwin International Film Festival (DIFF) have scoured the world to bring us this year’s program, from the grand old Hong Kong International Film Festival, to the glitter of Tribeca in New York and the eye-opening Toronto Hot Docs.

The result? A two-week celebration of cinema – the best drama, hidden stories, glorious cinematography and stirring real-life tales.

“We want to show the diversity of the world and the huge variety of film culture going on,” says DIFF Director Tim Parish.

“We’ve got a really strong focus on Asia this year and a strong ‘Indigenous vision’ theme. We’re also showcasing a range of Territory-made films as part of the Spark short film initiative. Another theme, 'Eurocentric', looks at the latest in European cinema.”

The biggest new feature to this year’s DIFF is Cinema 360°, a pop-up 18-metre dome screen at the Waterfront precinct. Pioneered in the 1950s, dome screens have moved beyond educational planetariums and are now used to create truly immersive cinema. This will be an eye-opening cinematic experience for people of all ages, and is not to be missed.

Film lovers will also revel in DIFF’s audiovisual program, including silent film screenings with live music, while those in the industry should definitely check out the Australian Cinematography Awards and the range of extensive workshops. Special guest David Wenham will attend a live script reading of local TV shows-in-production News Junkies and Zero-Point.

One of DIFF's hot picks is the highly anticipated Westwind, the story of famed yidaki player and Yolngu elder Djalu Gurruwiwi, who will also be a guest of the festival; Lipstick Under My Burkha star Aahana Kumra is DIFF's first international guest and will appear at the opening night screening of the film.

Don't miss Australian David Wenham’s directorial debut Ellipsis, and if you loved the hell-bent action of George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road, you’ll no doubt be revving to see the director’s special black and white edition. Dress up in your best armour and oily rags for the post-apocalyptic after party.

David Wenham THE LAST TIME DAVID WENHAM WAS IN DARWIN WAS TO SHOOT BAZ LUHRMAN’S BLOCKBUSTER AUSTRALIA. This month the actor presents his film Ellipsis – and it couldn’t be more different.

Ellipsis is experimental and shot on a micro-budget – how did you make it?

It took 10 days from the inception of the idea, right through to the completion of the principal photography. Myself, Benedict Samuel and Emily Barclay – the two

There’s only two other actors beside the leads in the film. People who see it actually can’t work out who are actors and who are real. Some of those people change the whole direction of the film, so much so that I couldn’t invent it if I wanted to.

Did the non-actors have a script?

Most of it was improvised and 95 per cent of the film is one-take with two cameras. No rehearsal, straight into it.

Alankrita Shrivastava DIFF'S OPENING NIGHT FILM IS ALANKRITA SHRIVASTAVA’S HIT FEMINIST BLACK COMEDY LIPSTICK UNDER MY BURKHA. The film was so shocking to some in India that it was threatened with non-classification by the country’s film certification board for being ‘lady oriented’ and containing ‘audio pornography,’ she told Off The Leash.

Why did you want to make Lipstick Under My Burkha?

As a woman living in India, I have often wondered why I don’t feel fully free. Even though I was brought up in a liberal family, with a liberal education, I think the society one

How did you feel when the Central Board of Film Certification tried to stop the film from being screened?

Essentially the board was opposed to a film that tells stories from a female point of view. They viewed the film as a threat to patriarchy, and hence felt uncomfortable with it. For once the women were telling their own stories intimately. I think that scared them.

What has been the feedback from the film – what has surprised you?

The film has got a lot of love and support from across the world, and in India. People have really embraced the film – men and women – and that has been very heartening. It feels like the battle was really worth it.

FOR SOME, DARWIN’S FIRST EVER GEECON (PRONOUNCED ‘GEEK-ON’) HAS BEEN A LONG TIME COMING.

The festival of anime, manga, cosplay and video games is expected to attract upward of 2000 people to the Darwin Convention Centre, where fans will throw themselves into cosplay competitions, gaming tournaments and film screenings.

“I grew up when anime and video games were kind of booming,” says John Boholst, a GeeCon organiser.

“When I came back to Darwin I thought I’d check out the Darwin convention, but there wasn’t any up here. I thought, ‘I’ll see if we can change that’.”

The event is a fan-based festival, as opposed to a commercial convention like Comic-Con, where the stars of pop culture and comics are the focus.

“The main audience is people who like Japanese comics, which is manga and Japanese animation, which is anime, and video games, which we figured would be the biggest demographic in Darwin,” says Boholst.

Nevertheless, GeeCon has managed to woo two international stars of the anime and gaming world to the festival, flying over US voice actors Sarah Williams and Paul St. Peter.

Williams is famous for voicing the blue-haired, gleefully criminal Jinx in the video game League of Legends; while St. Peter has been voicing Japanese anime characters since the 1980s and is now a fixture in the video gaming world.

Cosplay, where fans dress up as a favourite character in costumes they’ve made themselves, is probably the biggest drawcard. Darwin’s cosplay Facebook page has been

aflutter with costuming queries and pictures in the lead-up to the first major local competition.

“Like a lot of geeky stuff, you don’t really talk about it. It’s something you do on your own. It’s not really something to you do to start a conversation with other people,” says Boholst.

“But there are a lot of people into anime, even like my friends who are 30 to 40 years old, still reading comics and watching anime.”

The early excitement of Darwin’s first GeeCon has meant that the organisers have raised their expectations for next year’s event, planning for fans from the Territory and beyond to get their GeeCon. WHEN At COST Info

A SUPREMELY ELEGANT DANCE, TANGO IS FORMAL IN STYLE AND FASHION, BUT HUMBLE IN ITS ORIGINS. NORTHERN TANGO, Darwin’s small but dedicated dance community, was born 13 years ago by “two ladies who simply wanted to dance tango,” says organiser Kelly Hansen. It now runs a weekly practica, and a monthly social dance (milonga). This month visiting Argentine tango powerhouses Fabian and Karina Conca will add some serious style with performance, salons and even private lessons.

What are the essential elements of tango?

Argentine tango is an improvised social dance of walking, pivoting, changing of direction, axis and energy. A hugging embrace is the conduit for connection that allows both dance partners to co-create a beautiful, immersive dance.

Who are Fabian and Karina Conca?

From Buenos Aires Argentina, Fabian and Karina Conca are thirdgeneration tango dancers raised in families steeped in the tradition.

Their dance and teaching has a strong emphasis on elegance while maintaining a constant connection between the couple, reflecting their tradition and culture.

I hear that Tango is good for the mind also?

It is considered by health care professionals to be an ideal exercise to benefit social, mental and physical wellbeing across the ages. Tango increases mobility, balance, stride length and core strength, provides social satisfaction, induces a state of flow, spirituality and mindfulness.

Cognitive ability is also improved, as well as body awareness. It can help with diseases such as Parkinson’s and mental health issues such as depression.

The Top End has the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair, but the Centre has Desert Mob, a three-day feast of desert art, featuring work from some of the most remote art centres in the country.

The festival comprises three big events – the exhibition, a symposium and the marketplace, each bound to satisfy your visual, intellectual and retail needs.

The opening night is a special event, a mingling of artists who’ve travelled vast distances to make it there, Alice Springs locals and high-rollers on the lookout for collectible art.

Desart, the body representing 42 desert art centres, has a footprint that stretches across the Central Desert, the Barkly, North West, the APY Lands and Ngaanyatjarra West, each bringing a distinct and diverse range of artworks to the festival, from the Namatjira watercolours, to Tjanpi desert weavers.

The following day, the Symposium offers a unique opportunity to hear about contemporary Aboriginal art, projects happening around the region and Q&As with the artists.

The highlight of the fest is a family fun day at Lake Alexander, where Guide Dogs Australia will be on site with their pooches and paddleboats will take visitors across the water.

For a fascinating but no less fun day out, Royal Darwin Hospital’s rehabilitation services will open their doors for a behind-the-scenes look at its occupational and speech therapy programs, and how the body recovers after trauma such as a car crash.

With changes to the Marriage Act to allow same-sex couples to marry now being put out to a postal survey, the issue of marriage equality will be a strong one for the Pride March.

“We haven’t had one in a number of years but I think this year it’s important, to show the community is strong, and it will have a political bent,” says festival co-chair Daniel Alderman.

The re-vamped 2017 march will include “a few floats,” including a vehicle from the Northern Territory Police, Fire and Rescue and a giant stiletto previously seen in the Mindil Beach Sunset Market’s anniversary celebrations earlier this year.

Politicians, including Chief Minister Michael Gunner, whose sister Lucy is a Pride Festival organiser, will be at the march says Alderman, where rainbow colours will replace the stripes at the Knuckey St zebra crossing.

“Darwin City Council has supported the march and have come out in support of marriage equality,” he says, “yet our government still won’t allow a percentage of the community to have equal rights. We will be calling for that.”

Alongside the political will, of course, be the party, including music at Happy Yess after the march, a party at Throb and a Miss First Nations pageant.

For young LGBTQI, The Quarter at Casuarina Square will again be putting on a youth event, and the big week will finish up with a lazy dazy boat cruise hosted by pop-up party starters Departure Lounge.

PERFORMING ARTS COMEDIANS AMY HETHERINGTON AND KIRSTY WEBECK FIRST MET AT THIS YEAR’S MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL COMEDY FESTIVAL (MICF), where they were playing at the same venue. It wasn’t long before they were firm friends.

When comedians hit it off, things must get pretty hilarious, for soon the pair were planning an outback road trip together, Thelma and Louise style.

“I guess initially it was just a drunken conversation where the two of us were like, ‘we should totally do a tour.’ Then I got back to Darwin and called her and said, ‘actually let’s do that,’” says Hetherington.

Darwin comedy fans will know Hetherington for her Darwin Festival show Terminally Positive and her myriad of MC gigs, not to mention her stand-up and appearances in the annual NT comedy show Laugh It Off. In her hometown of Melbourne, Webeck is also a rising star, with performances at the Adelaide Fringe,

a successful 2017 MICF run and invitations to speak as an LGBTIQ rights activist.

“We’ve both got sort of similar styles in the way that we do comedy.

We’re both storytellers but with very different backgrounds – she’s single and doing crazy things in Melbourne and I’m a married homeowner from Darwin, so we’ve got really different worlds but I think it’s going to be fun for a comedy show,” says Hetherington.

As they take their comedy tour “up the guts” through Alice, Tennant Creek, Katherine and Darwin, the pair will include local comedy acts in the gigs – or in the case of Katherine, provide an open mic for anyone who wants to have a go.

So really, the road trip is the only Thelma and Louise part of the show?

“We don’t have a convertible fancy car,” confesses Hetherington.

“We’ve just got the X-Trail and hopefully we don’t kill anyone either.”

The Merchant of Venice

Bessanio, a Venetian noble, borrows money from Shylock, a Jewish moneylender, in order to woo the brilliant and beautiful Portia.

Bessanio’s merchant friend Antonio is openly anti-Semitic, but agrees to be Bessanio’s guarantor. In the event that his bond is not paid, Shylock lays down the condition that he will get a ‘pound of flesh’ from Antonio.

Meanwhile, love matches are fought and won as Bessanio and Portia meet, and Shylock’s daughter Jessica runs off with Bessanio’s friend Lorenzo – and converts to Christianity, to boot.

Shylock is one of the most controversial and compelling of Shakespeare’s creations; a Jewish character living in a time of intense persecution, given the most memorable and stirring speeches, but otherwise cast as a cruel villain.

His ‘just’ fate, delivered through the courts at the end, is nothing of the sort to modern viewers.

Did we mention it’s kind of a comedy?

The Bell Shakespeare Company has received excellent reviews for this production, with Mitchell Butel (Janet King and Rake) as the defiant Shylock, Jessica Tovey (Wolf Creek and Wonderland) as Portia and direction by Anne-Louise Sarks.

ell Shakespeare’s adaptation of William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice takes the play’s action from 16th century Venice to a contemporary setting, and the themes of religious prejudice, forgiveness and greed couldn’t be more timely.

“She also liked to sing, so at yum cha sometimes she’d stand up and put one hand on the Lazy Susan table and then in a wavering vibrato, sing old songs from the 40s and 50s,” recalls Ma. When she died, Ma and his sister discovered that this PG-version of their grandmother was rather different to the glamour and highstakes of her earlier life.

But also in terms of her personal life – she lived with her lover and her husband in one house.”

“It’s a theatre storytelling show with a lot of music in it, about James and I, our friendship, growing up in the 90s mixed race, being obsessed by hip-hop and slowly that interest becoming our political awakening,” says Ma.

Mangohig met Ma under a tree at a music festival in Alice Springs and went from being a fan of TZU, to a lifelong friend.

This political awakening led Ma to form TZU, the funny, original, political hip-hop crew who achieved great success in the 2000s.

Ma’s grandmother ran Sydney’s Chequers nightclub, one of the city’s earliest licenced free venues, and hosted the likes of Sammy Davis Jnr and Sarah Vaughan.

“She really was a ground breaking and amazing woman, in terms of her business acumen and her strength.

Raised in the church, Mangohig’s Filipino father was a preacher, who corresponded with his mother for six years, even becoming engaged to her, before ever meeting face-to-face.

His own story follows his musical rebellion “and then owning my own identity as growing up mixed-raced Asian in Australia.”

FESTIVAL

The annual Beat Festival began in 1979 as a combined schools concert in the Darwin amphitheatre. 37 Beats later, the spectacular runs over three nights and features more than 1000 students, from grade one to year 12, at the Darwin Entertainment Centre.

This year’s theme is ‘Magic!’ – which belies the incredible effort put in by hundreds of students, their teachers and parents to produce the consummate all-singing, all-dancing musical event.

“The preparation runs for an entire year,” says NT Music School Principal Bill Grose.

“We’ve already started working on next year’s show. We have to decide on the songs for the following year quite early, then we have to arrange the songs for the 32-piece band.”

Each night a combined choir of 300 students gets on stage to sing, this year including students from Katherine, Maningrida, Ramingining, Bathurst Island and Nemarluk

schools, who are joining their Darwin and Palmerston counterparts.

“Katherine School of the Air have a choir and are regulars and they don’t even catch up with each other until the festival,” says Grose. Instead, the students practice over the airwaves.

This year’s featured performers include NT Song of the Year People’s Choice winner, Phoebe Wear and the popular Alice Springs Centralian Senior College rock band, Juice.

The performers who’ve come furthest afield however, are the Tongling Middle School No 4, from Anhui Province in China.

“We’ve got a sister school relationship with Tongling Middle School,” explains Grose.

“They send students to perform in The Beat every second year and we send bands to visit China every other year. This year they’re sending traditional musicians so that’s pretty exciting.”

Zach Green steamed buns and green ant ginger cheesecake, Green’s innovative and delicious use of Top End ingredients was a hit and nudged him on to produce more events like it.

ach Green has been a chef for most of his working life, but it was a personal tragedy that led him to delve deeper into food, cooking and his Aboriginal heritage.

The 28-year-old is in Darwin planning his next Indigenous-focused pop-up restaurant, following the success of his first held last month at The O.A.K in Darwin.

With dishes like cured crocodile with compressed watermelon and kaffir lime dressing, slow cooked buffalo

In the not-so-distant future the chef wants to open a restaurant serving similarly creative food that showcases authentic Indigenous culture, while tapping into tourism’s hunger for edible experiences.

“Obviously the pop-up is only giving a glimpse of what the restaurant will be like and what will be on offer there,” he says.

Green moved to the Top End with his fiancée, Yolngu woman and Marngrook Footy Show panel member Leila Gurruwiwi.

The pair lost two pregnancies to miscarriage, a sorrow that sent Green into a ‘deep hole’, but from which he emerged with a new passion, naming his cooking project, Elijah’s Kitchen, after one of the babies.

“With the passing of my sons, it took me to the point where cooking brought me out of the deep hole – it really saved my life,” he says.

“I felt that food was my connection to my culture and the Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander cultures of Australia.”

Green’s grandmother is a Gunditjmara woman from southwest Victoria, but she only told her children she was Aboriginal when Green was 12.

“I found that whenever I was going to communities, if it was in WA or in the NT or Queensland and I was cooking traditional food, I learned about stories and that gave me a massive boost of confidence, knowing I was being connected to culture through food,” he says.

“The main ingredients that I love are all the native game – from crocodile to kangaroo, to emu to camel, buffalo, wild boar and wallaby – and magpie goose.”

With such ancient and valued foods on our doorstep, surely it’s time they made a stronger appearance on Darwin’s restaurant tables. Could Zach Green be the one to do it?

Darwin Food Diary 16 - 26 June 2017 DURING MY 10-DAY WORKSHOP RESIDENCY AT ACCOMPLICE I COOKED A LOT AND SHARED DINNERS WITH MANY, MANY PEOPLE. Any chance to eat out, I took it – and looked forward to the stories that would fill my heart. Here are a few of my faves.

I had been told of the Darwin institution that is Mary’s Laksa at Parap Market long before I first made it to this city. “Darwin has the best laksa in Australia,” they said. Now, I know Mary didn’t win the local best laksa competition this year but, in my book, a good laksa experience is 50 per cent quality and 50 per cent nostalgia. And the combination of the sweaty morning and Mary’s charisma, plus a pretty good laksa, filled my soul just as much as it filled my belly.

Found in both Parap and Rapid Creek markets, Thai sweets are the perfect treat to take to a dinner party. Glutinous rice, palm sugar and pandan are some of the key ingredients in many of these delicious goodies.

With a focus on sustainably caught fish and a small menu, Jetty and the Fish really impressed and was the perfect final dinner before I made my way out of this city. The batter is light and well fried, and the chips hit the spot. The fish was fresh and sweet on its own. The line is long, but it’s a restful Sunday, so who’s rushing. Take in the sunset, the evening breeze, the sound of the waves crashing and breathe in Darwin.

THEY’RE GREEN BUT PERFECTLY RIPE, SWEET BUT SOUR – OR JUST PLAIN SWEET. It’s the season for green mangoes, before the big yellow Kensington Pride and blushing R2E2 dominate the market, and our palates.

Mangoes that are mature when green have sweetness and tartness, without being starchy. They can be eaten on their own as a refreshing snack, sliced in salads or used in pickles and chutneys.

Stall holder Muy Keav is a commercial mango grower whose two green varieties, Elephant and Keow Savoey, provide fresh, contrasting flavours to Rapid Creek Market shoppers and foodies on the east coast, where she exports to.

Long, like an ivory tusk, the pale green Elephant “is sour but not super-sour and is good for salad,” says Keav.

The smaller and greener Keow Savoey is “a little bit sweeter, crunchier with more aroma. When I mix it with the salad you can smell it with your mouth.”

Chutney This recipe for green mango chutney uses white sugar, white vinegar and a few spices to preserve the fruity flavour and bright yellow of the mango.

1 Elephant mango 3 small sweet green-skinned mangoes like Keow Savoey

Market

Keav makes a mouth-watering Cambodian version of the ubiquitous paw paw salad using green mango.

She uses a mix of both Elephant and Keow Savoey, small dried prawns and lots of fresh herbs, which she grows without pesticides on her Lambells Lagoon farm.

She also makes an Indian-style pickle using crunchy Elephant mango, which she sells at the stall.

Green Elephant is a popular green eating mango in Vietnam, and is a refreshing snack.

Other green varieties to try at Rapid Creek Market are the sweet Falan and Nam Doc Mai, both Thai varieties, which turn yellow inside when fully ripe. The popular Nam Doc Mai is long and white-green, and is delicious when eaten sweet or sour.

Before the “big two” take over with their full-on dessert sweetness, get your fill of green mangoes – marinated, in salads, in green mango chutney or as a sweet and crunchy addition to rice paper rolls.

Slice the mango from the seed into thin but wide slices and set aside. Heat a sturdy large pot and soften onion in the oil. Stir in all the other ingredients and bring to a boil, then turn down low and simmer for 50 minutes, stirring occasionally. Pour into hot sterilised jars and set aside to cool. Refrigerate once opened.

"There’s no emphasis on sharing your work, the emphasis is on getting writing done. People working on short stories, poetry, their PhD. Someone wrote a grant application at the last one.”

Bell says Write Here has drawn people who would normally not get a chance to meet with other writers and, in the wider scheme of things, the sessions aim to help local writers produce more work.

The Write Here two hours of power is part of a national program run by the Melbourne-based group Writers Bloc.

“My personal motivation is that there are amazing writers here, but our stories are not often part of the national narrative. I’m interested in helping stories from regional Australia feed into that narrative.”

There’s now more than 50 members on the group’s Facebook page and a mix of people who turn up for the sessions, held on the first Saturday of the month.

“The characters drive the plot, so when I look at people’s writing, I want to see characters that interest me and I want to care about the characters and be concerned for their journeys. That’s going to hold the reader's interest.”

Like a traditional writing group, participants also have the choice of reading and commenting on each other’s writing, a process that is strongly encouraged.

“When you’re writing it all makes perfect sense. It’s all inside your head and you think it’s wonderful, but you don’t know how the reader is absorbing it. It’s really handy to have people read and give feedback,” says Thibodeaux.

The session begins with one warmup exercise and is broken up by morning tea, but other than that, it’s all up to you and your words.

“What I’m interested in is probably character,” she says.

“Probably the final touch I look at is a sense of poetry and a sense of rhythm in all writing. That’s usually what is the icing on the cake, if you think of someone like Tim Winton for instance, or Alexis Wright. It’s what gives the reader great pleasure.”

Emily Dickinson was famously unrecognised during her lifetime, her poetry and genius not witnessed beyond her small familial world in Amherst, Massachusetts. Terence Davies’ A Quiet Passion pays homage to Dickinson, shining a light on her complex inner world and family, in lush period style.

Each month from September to November, participants will submit a piece of writing of no more than 1500 words. Thibodeaux, who is the former head of the Writers’ Centre and whose most recent work The Age of Bones showed at Brown’s Mart earlier this year, will read participants’ work and give constructive feedback through email.

NTeen Fashion Festival SOCKS WILL BE KNOCKED OFF! WONDER WILL BE STRUCK! So says founder Jo-anna Egart of this year’s NTeen Fashion Festival, where young designers and makers show off their skills to each other, their friends and a crack panel of judges.

She hasn’t seen the designs yet of course, but going on all the years past, Egart knows to expect the unexpected.

In an era of cheap, fast fashion and lightening-quick trends, the fashion festival is a testament to the creativity and ability of teenagers, with teen designers travelling from as far as Alice Springs to parade their sewing and designs.

“They were knocking people’s socks off last year, so I just say be prepared for something wonderful. They’re capable of wonderful, wonderful things,” says Egart.

Some young designers have been working on garments to enter into the festival for six months, others will smash them out in a week, says Egart. All show their clothes on a catwalk, with the garments’ technical composition judged before the show.

“Through the process of creating a design they have to problem solve,” says Egart.

“When they come to the event, if they get anxious, then we encourage them to assert themselves and work with us to find a model for them.”

The leading design and the runner-up in each category will go on to represent the NT at the Apex Australia Teenage Fashion and Arts (AATFA) Youth Festival National Final in Perth.

With categories including wearable art, formal wear, casual wear and the ‘rising star’ show for primary school-aged kids who’ve made any kind of garment, this year’s fashion fest is bound to impress not only the judges.

What characters do you portray in cosplay?

So far I have only cosplayed video game characters. I remember when the game Halo: Reach was released and I thought, ‘how cool would it be to have a set of Spartan armour?’

And now I have one.

Also at the café will be the Edison robot, an easy programmable robotics tool for keen inventors, as well as 3D printing and virtual reality demonstrations.

The café is an initiative of the Darwin City Council and Libraries, and as well as fixed-time demos and workshops, includes self-directed activities like manga drawing, a reading space and the perennial favourite – badge making.

“Conventions are massive down south,” says the Council’s Lisa Burnett, “and this GeeCon is instigated by young people. They wanted to provide something like that up here, but maybe with a heavier component around video gaming.”

Tapping into the strongly creative side of GeeCon, the Maker Café will also feature young make up artist Krista Kaye, who will demonstrate her supernatural special FX designs.

To replenish those spent electrolytes and skill-up on an awesome dessert craze, the café’s Southeast Asian shaved ice dessert workshops are sure to be a hit, with Filipino Halo-Halo, Malaysian Ais Kacang and Korean Patbingsu all on offer – for free!

What’s the most difficult thing you've created?

My greatest achievement is probably my Spartan suit. It's more of a childhood dream coming true. Over time, I have faced a lot of challenging builds, each requiring a different skill level. The most recent one was my T-600 Terminator skull. It turned my mind to jelly a few times during the build.

From the Esplanade to Fannie Bay to Nightcliff, there’s something abuzz on the Darwin foreshore. You may have noticed the explosion of new pop-up food vans this Dry season – with their special, low-key, relaxed and friendly vibe, they’ve been warmly embraced by Darwin locals.

For parents sick of cooking the evening meal (like myself), I’m sure you’ll agree that a family dinner at a pop-up food truck on the foreshore has got to be one of the easiest and most fabulous ways to eat out with kids in these parts. You don't have to cook, the kids can play and the sunsets are always glorious.

Their harbour locations are top notch – plus the owners set up charming tables and chairs, bean bags, ambient lighting, mats, chilled tunes and more. The range of cuisines on offer is mind-boggling, from Thai, Syrian, German, Russian, Greek and Italian, there’s something to please even the fussiest of little eaters.

Heading to a pop-up is a unique and personal experience. You meet the owners – from Benjamin shouting “Number 45 Pizza” at Cucina Sotto le Stelle (aka Pop up Pizza), to long-term locals Yianna and Irene of Yummy Yianna’s Greek Cuisine serving their home made Greek fare. There’s crepes from Ken and Susi at Ken’s Crepes, and schnitzel from Ben and Kamala at Hänsel

und Gretel. Kit from Mitch and Mario BBQ Smokehouse, who hails from Texas, told me he marinates the pork for 24 hours and then smokes it for another 14! Now that’s dedication. The Potato Man, Jay’s Coffee and Harry’s Mobile Kitchen are all trail blazers of the Nightcliff Foreshore and Harry celebrates 20 years at Nightcliff Jetty this year.

Make the most of the rest of the Dry season, as some wind down over the Wet, and head to a pop-up for a family brekkie, lunch or dinner.

SHOWCASING TOP END COMICS AND LOCAL STAND-UP PERFORMERS

The curtains have fallen on the Darwin Festival and Hanuman has cleaned off the last ghee splatter from its bamboo kitchen but, like a phoenix rising from the ashes of your festival memories, several amazing new comedy shows emerge to breathe life into your humdrum lives. That's right, September is flush with stand up comedic talent, hotter than a Build Up evening, and all you have to do is know where to sniff.

First up, on Wednesday 6 September, local comedy juggernaut Amy Hetherington teams up with her Melbourne stand up soul-mate Kirsty Webeck for the final stop of their NT Comedy Road Trip. This show promises to deliver some genuinely cracking laughs.

Think the 1987 Star Wars spinoff and moderate hit Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure but even cuter (and decidedly more funny). Judging by Hetherington's previous uplifting and hilarious shows this is sure to be a night of raucous and infectious laughter.

For the stand up comedy connoisseurs, Top End Comedy presents its monthly stand up showcase at Happy Yess on the first Thursday of the month. September’s theme of ‘families’ will see some exciting new routines from Darwin's emerging superstars.

Lock in Friday 8 September and get down to the Darwin Railway Club in Parap for the Darwin Asylum Seeker Support and Advocacy Network’s (DASSAN) Humanely Hilarious Comedy and Live Auction.

Dr G Yunupingu a tribute IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO FATHOM THAT 10 YEARS AGO, THE WORLD DID NOT YET KNOW DR G YUNUPINGU. Before the release of his debut album he was known by fans of Yothu Yindi and dedicated followers might have been aware of his work with Saltwater Band. But it wasn’t until 2008 that music lovers beyond Galiwin’ku on Elcho Island, beyond Darwin and the Northern Territory were awakened to the music of this gentle soul.

“I was always in awe of his talent and could never understand that while he was in Saltwater Band no-one really took much notice of him, as he sat quietly playing his guitar,” says good friend Mark Grose, Managing Director of Dr G’s record label Skinnyfish Music.

Blind since birth, Dr G was born on Elcho Island in Arnhem Land in 1970.

He taught himself to play guitar, playing the instrument upside down, and he sang with a voice like we had never heard before.

The raw power of his voice, singing in a language most listeners couldn’t understand, seemed to extend a generous bridge between black and white, urging on many white Australians to comprehend the immense culture he was a part of.

Dr G mastered other instruments including piano, guitar, electronic keyboard and drums. With Saltwater Band, he helped sell more than 10,000 records, playing a unique brand of Yolngu reggae and rock.

In 2008 Dr G released a self-titled album that was a revelation to many, winning two ARIAs and selling more than 500,000 copies.

“It is difficult to explain what the world sees in his music, but for me it is a connection to the land,” says Grose.

“It is an expression of pure beauty that is often lost in Australian artistic expression. Non-Indigenous songwriters often paint a picture of a harsh landscape from an almost alien world. In G’s music you have soaring beauty and power.

“His music presents a picture of beauty and of complexity that nonIndigenous Australians have now had an opportunity to experience.

There is a deep connection between G’s music and the heart of the Australian landscape that resonates not just locally but internationally.”

Top End audiences had many opportunities to see Dr G perform; he played solo at the Darwin Festival and the National Indigenous Music Awards (NIMAs), but also at countless community concerts in Barunga, Merrepen and Elcho Island.

ARIA charts in 2011. He is the most awarded NIMA artist, winning a total of five NIMA Artist of the Year awards.

With his fame extending beyond Australian shores, Dr G toured to the UK for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, played with Sting and won yet more ARIAs – although they might have had more worth on Elcho island, than in a trophy cabinet. Mark Grose recalls hearing that the statuettes were very handy for chiselling oysters off the rocks at Galiwin’ku.

It’s heartbreaking to contemplate that Dr G's career as a solo artist lasted a little less than a decade, and his departure has left a great void in the hearts of those who knew him, and great sadness for those who loved his music.

Who are the characters who have inspired you to write music recently?

There are not as many inspirations as in former years – perhaps we are running out of characters? I have a couple of songs on the go, one about a pioneer woman of the Barossa Valley and another about Dr Gilruth, the subject of my new biography. The Gilruth song is principally aimed at getting proper pronunciation of his surname: "Tell us the truth, about Doctor Gil-RUTH".

Of the hundreds of songs you’ve written over your career is there one particular song you always look forward to performing?

‘Granny’ is a favourite and it always gets a positive response. It’s a song about Granny Lum Loy, a muchloved old Darwin woman, who came to Australia from China as a child bride aged seven and died in Darwin aged 97. She was the grandma of the first local I met when I arrived in Darwin, Ron "Hoonga" Chin. I developed the tune of the song from the principle that Eastern music is based on the black notes on the piano.

Tell us about the ‘pearling songs’ that form part of your repertoire.

Why are these songs something you are so passionate about?

People came from all parts of the Pacific to Darwin in the pearling days, especially from the Philippines, Malaya and Indonesia.

They brought with them their work songs. The tunes of these songs became well-known around Darwin, the Tiwi Islands and Broome and while people joined in singing the tunes they often imposed phrases of their own languages. As a result there is this musical "hotch-potch" of terrific tunes with confused, often

humour and fun” that he will miss the most.

“He was always one to enjoy a practical joke, especially when he was able to catch you out unexpectedly. His legacy will live on through his music and through the G Yunupingu Foundation, which was set up to foster positive outcomes through the arts for young people in remote communities. I hope his greatest legacy will be his ability to open up to the world the great beauty of his traditional culture, the culture of the Yolngu people.”

Dr G passed away in Royal Darwin Hospital in July at age 46 after a long battle with illness.

Your honorific name is “Namiuk Kwaruk” – who gave you this name, and what does it mean?

It is an honorific bestowed by the Khungarakung people. It means "Singing Elder" and was given to me when I wrote my song ‘Alyandabu’, about the famous Khungarakung matriarch.

You’re launching your book Gilruth in September – a book about the first NT Administrator John Anderson Gilruth. Why is Gilruth a Territory identity whose life you wanted to document?

Gilruth has been badly treated in historic terms. He was certainly not faultless and I acknowledge many silly mistakes he made, but I also point to the fact that he had the Territory's best interests at heart and was at all times energetic, knowledgeable and innovative, and thereby deserves to be re-evaluated as the Administrator of the Northern Territory, rather than the Viceroy of Darwin.

AT THE AGE OF JUST 17, DARWIN SINGER-SONGWRITER STEVIE JEAN HAS HAD A HECTIC COUPLE OF MONTHS. Having recently topped the triple j Unearthed charts, and been named as one of the five finalists in triple j Unearthed High, she is definitely a rising star to watch.

KILLING HEIDI FORMED IN THE VICTORIAN COUNTRY TOWN OF VIOLET TOWN IN 1996, winning triple j Unearthed later that year for their tune ‘Kettle’. Two decades later, they are still making music and join Aussie music stalwart James Reyne (Australian Crawl) for One Tropical Day this Father’s Day eve. Killing Heidi’s Ella Hooper answered The Fast Five for Off The Leash.

What’s the first album you ever bought?

Veruca Salt’s American Thighs. I believe the money was a gift, probably birthday money, because we didn't get pocket money. And it was purchased at Sanity Shepparton, the Maude Street Mall, baby!

Tell us about your career. How did you get involved in music?

My parents, while not musicians, have always been great lovers of music. Dad raised me on Zeppelin and Mum on Fleetwood Mac.

How many instruments do you play?

I play the violin, guitar and the vocal chords.

What made you apply for triple j Unearthed High?

Unearthed High is such a wonderful platform for young artists. It was a no brainer.

How did it feel when you found out that you were a top five finalists out of 1,000 entrants?

Absolutely thrilled, humbled and grateful to the judges and the team who made it possible – my parents and my producers James Mangohig and Steven Smith.

If you could see any artist or band – living or dead – this weekend, who would it be?

I'd kill to see Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, right now on their 40-year anniversary tour – or back in the 70s if time travel were possible.

Whose posters did you have stuck to the wall as a teenager?

PJ Harvey and The Spice Girls. I’ve always loved my low brow/high brow.

And then there's making it to number one on the triple j Unearthed charts. That must have been a bit surreal? Especially at your age?

Hitting number two was incredible.

I expected the song to fall but when the charts were updated a week later I found myself at number one.

The other finalists had also risen into the top 10, so massive props to them.

Has growing up in Darwin had a big influence on your music?

Living in Darwin presents a unique opportunity to pursue art uninhibited by boxes or stereotypes.

What artists are you listening to at the moment?

I love Icelandic band Kaleo as well as the freak folk sister duo CocoRosie.

Is there anyone in the NT you’d like to collaborate with?

I’m hoping to collaborate with local legends King Klass.

What can we expect from you next?

My main focus is writing and recording. I will have a guitar in my hands for the next six months creating an EP.

Pianist Don Walker, perhaps best known for his work with Cold Chisel, spoke to Off The Leash about the upcoming tour.

The new album You Don’t Know Lonely is dark, gruff and melancholy, but it also feels like the darkness is a bit tongue in cheek at times. How does the album feel to you? Is it fun to perform?

We haven’t performed any of these songs in public yet, only between ourselves in Charlie’s house, and recording in studios. I don’t think it’s any darker than ordinary life, and like ordinary life it’s leavened with a bit of humour. For me, it’s always enjoyable playing with Tex and Charlie, and with Garrett Costigan, and anyone else we’ve had along with us over the years.

The Cruel Sea, Beasts of Bourbon, Cold Chisel – Tex, Don and Charlie were born out of some of the most rocking acts in Australian music in

the 80s and 90s. How does a Tex, Don and Charlie tour compare to the touring days with those bands?

Well, what we do together now is more like a concert than a rock show. The first show I played with Tex and Charlie, after spending my youth playing in Cold Chisel, was in a theatre. We walked out onstage and the crowd was utterly silent, and I thought ‘Jesus, they’re listening!’ and a wave of panic swept over me.

I’m used to it now. But I have to be careful, because if I make a mistake they will hear it. I mostly hedge my bets by playing nothing at all unless I really have to risk it.

Is there a great Darwin or Top End gig from over the years that you will always remember?

Cold Chisel played in the Botanical Gardens for the first time around 1980, and the whole hill was packed with people from communities out in the bush and from down along the coast and from the islands, dancing and picking flowers off the trees. It was beautiful. A more innocent time in some ways. We broke the attendance record that Rolf Harris had set 10 years before.
