Colin Holt has become known for his abstract expressionist paintings, but the maverick artist refuses to be pigeonholed.

Charles Darwin University (CDU) Art Gallery explores the diversity of Holt’s work over the last 40 years.

ooking back over his career, Darwin artist Colin Holt has done it all – painting, printmaking, music and furniture making, just to name a few.

CDU Art Gallery’s new exhibition, Colin Holt: a survey, features almost 90 pieces showcasing the diversity in Holt’s practice over the last 40 years.

Holt first arrived in Darwin in 1977 and studied Fine Arts at the Darwin Community College, CDU’s predecessor.

In the 1980s, he lived and worked across Northern Australia including Cairns, Darwin River and on Bathurst Island, before starting a screen-printing studio at Wishart Siding. During the early 1990s he returned to the Tiwi Islands and ran poster and fabric printmaking workshops at Tiwi Designs.

Holt says the exhibition at his old artistic stomping ground feels like he’s come full circle from his days studying at the Darwin Community College.

“The first year I was there that art building opened,” he says.

“When I was there we ended up getting a demountable down at the swamp near where the new gallery is. It feels like I’ve come full circle since 1980 to be back there now – I’m still painting after all those years.”

Since those early days Holt has kept busy with many projects over many mediums.

Colin Holt: a survey features work including the abstract expressionism Holt has become known for and also his prints and large-format portraits.

His series of cheeky portraits of NT Chief Ministers has been updated to include the last three political leaders – Terry Mills, Adam Giles and Michael Gunner.

The exhibition features 11 portraits from the updated series, 39 Years of Chief Ministers.

“Some of them I had references and some I did out of my head of what I knew of them and their character,” Holt says.

“For instance Adam Giles is riding a white stallion going down in a blaze of glory with a fire lighter burning everything in his path. And the one before him, Terry Mills is being stabbed in the back and the fire is starting. Then you get to Gunner and it’s all calm.”

Other works on show look at Holt’s fascination with the NT’s frontier history and conflicts.

His interest was sparked while running screen-printing workshops in Borroloola about a decade ago.

“I started reading books about Borroloola including Frontier Justice by Henry Reynolds,” he says.

“I found those stories interesting and the artists at Borroloola paint lots of cowboys and horses from the stock era. It’s so fresh out there – those people remember their uncles and dads getting whipped and chained up – but it’s not all bad, there are a lot about the other good characters out there too.”

CDU Art Gallery Acting Curator Kellie Joswig says the exhibition shines a spotlight on the maverick artist who she felt was under recognised, despite the quality of his work.

“Colin’s been established in Darwin for a really long time – he’s a really interesting local character who doesn’t get enough recognition,” she says.

“He’s got an interesting body of work and he’s quite quirky in his application of media.”

Tactile Arts Events Co-ordinator Tess Duke says that with everything from home wares to hot sauce spread over 90 stalls, there’ll be something for everyone on your gift list, with that locally-made feeling adding infinite sparkle to every purchase.

“It’s amazing to see how well reflected some people are in what they create and, knowing the background of where the work comes from, it really adds to the appreciation of your purchase. It makes for a much more meaningful gift.”

In her adulthood, Skelton spent long periods living overseas, until she found herself beginning to miss Australia in a way that surprised her.

“I started to miss it as a physical place. The plants, animals, bird songs, smell, weather and sun – and I started to find a fondness and nostalgia for my youth through its uniqueness.”

Establishing her own resin jewellery design studio, Concrete Jellyfish, she drew on this newfound inspiration from Aussie flora, fauna and everyday life to create eccentric and uniquely down under wearable art.

Co-ordinator Di Whittaker says the variety of wares and local craftspeople is pretty dazzling.

“There’s everything from to Bev’s woodturning, Sue’s leatherwork and Deb’s always popular hand knitted socks, to the Henbury Avenue Special School’s handmade gifts stall which is a huge hit every year.”

Still stuck for something for that distant cousin? Chat to the makers of perfumed soaps, candles, upcycled kids clothes and lengths of hand painted silk. You'll have your merry little Christmas list all crossed off in no time.

ON THE OUTSIDE, THE QUARTET OF LOCAL ROOT VEGETABLES (SWEET POTATO, TARO, CASSAVA, JICAMA) CAN LOOK STODGILY UNEXCITING. THEY MIGHT BE ALL LOCALLY GROWN, BUT HOW MUCH VARIETY CAN YOU REALLY CREATE FROM A SOLID MASS OF STARCH? Plenty, it turns out.

In her latest workshop, Taste of the Top End’s Emma Lupin is lifting the humble tropical root vegie out of the ground and onto the modern palate.

Local roots can all be turned into salads, dips, curries and desserts – not to mention mash.

“People will learn great recipes involving four focus roots and then get some tips and even cuttings, on how to grow them,” Lupin enthuses.

Sweet potato “really goes off” in the Wet season, with plentiful supplies in the markets and home gardens she says, and all roots can be eaten in sweet dishes as well as savoury.

Taro is a key ingredient in many cultures, especially the Pacific Islands, and Lupin hopes to introduce more Darwin cooks and gardeners to its culinary uses, starting with a popular savoury Pacific Island dish, which she will teach at the workshop.

Cooked taro leaves can be added to coconut milk and onion for a spicy side, while cassava can be prepared as a potato-salad-type dish or “a delicious mash,” and even made into gnocchi, says Lupin.

“Taro is more of a water-loving root and the staple of the Pacific Islands, but it does need a bit more work because it has some oxalic acids so it needs to be double boiled. You can make quite a lot of desserts with taro but also put it into curries and make savoury dishes, particularly with coconut milk,” she explains.

“You can use the leaves of all the roots that we’re going to look at or use the fresh tips raw in salad.”

Toast the peanuts and sesame seeds in a medium sized frying pan on medium heat, then lightly crush in a mortar. Set aside. In the same pan, cook the shallots, garlic and oil on medium heat until tender, turning once on each side. Once the onions are tender, allow to cool, then place in the mortar and pound with the peanuts and chilli. Add the fish sauce, sugar, garlic and lime juice, stir through. Add the coconut, coriander, jicama, pawpaw and all other ingredients and lightly toss to combine. Rest, then serve with fresh herbs to garnish.

Their latest venture, Eat my Words, brought together a diverse team of cooks who created a five-course menu using all-local ingredients – while telling their own stories of cooking.

“I grew up in Kerala in South India and came with my family a few years ago to Darwin to live and work,”

says Eat my Words community cook Biji Nair.

“I was told by my mum that you connect with people’s thoughts and emotions through their stomach.

When you feed your loved ones with good food they love you from their heart.”

Served in a hidden away community garden setting, the event featured dishes from West Papua, the Philippines, Southern India and the Top End – and the team at GULP are looking to do it all again.

“I made a Jackfruit curry called ‘chakka’. It’s called poor man’s feast in Kerala. When Jackfruit is cooked everyone can be full and it is a kind of luxury. It connects people and unites them,” says Nair.

“I love this fruit and it brings back childhood memories of harvest and celebration. As well as having connections to my home in Kerala, it has connected me to my new community in Darwin.”

IT COULDN’T COME AT A BETTER TIME. The Build Up might be underway but, although the Deckchair Cinema is closed, there’s still a chance to get your fill of foreign cinema when the French Film Festival arrives at the Darwin Entertainment Centre (DEC).

“For me it’s the diversity of what’s on offer that makes French film so special, and it’s so accessible, even for those who don’t speak the language,” says DEC projects coordinator Amy Bewick.

With an enormous movie screen and a new projector at its disposable, the Centre has chosen a choice selection of cinéma français for film lovers to see out the end of November.

“We’ve tried to program something for everyone – from great comedy in Penny Picher to the visually stunning The Odyssey. I urge everyone to come and experience at least one title, I would honestly watch all of them…and I intend to!”

Starting the mini-festival is Xavier Dolan’s It’s Only The End of the World, the 2016 Cannes Grand Prix-winning drama about a man returning to his family after 12 years, only to tell them he is dying.

The five films on offer were carefully selected from about 30 previews, watched by the Centre’s film buffs, with input from the Honorary Consulate of France, Zoe Marcham.

The Odyssey, a biopic of the ocean explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau, looks visually impressive, while Mercenary, a thriller about a young man from New Caledonia now living in France to play rugby, has received exciting reviews.

“There really are some incredible films screening as part of the festival, as well as so many amazing titles that didn’t quite make the cut that I wish we could have brought to Darwin,” says Bewick.

I'M NOT WITH THE BAND A Writer’s Life Lost in Music

REMEMBER WHEN OASIS WAS JUST ANOTHER PUB BAND? At the mention of The Velvet Underground, Robert Plant or ‘At Seventeen’, does a piece of string start tugging at memories long buried in random access? Do lyrics – and everything from thumping bass to orchestral swells – set your body moving to the rhythms of long (too long) ago?

If you say ‘yes, oh, yes, yes, yes’ then get yourself a copy of Sylvia Patterson’s I’m Not with the Band, a misleading title given that in her life as a music writer she was very much with, if not in, the bands – partying like tomorrow was just another part of today, often on an excess of alcohol or drugs (and usually both at the same time) and struggling to file a review before the (usually passed) deadline. It will fill you with either nostalgic delight, or, if you were pre-conception in those days, an insight into how your parents might have behaved before they became ‘responsible adults’.

After fooling around with a local Dundee newspaper (NT News minus the humour) Patterson is flicked an advert torn from the Guardian: “Wanted: Smash Hits Staff Writer”, and it all kicks on from there; from her first interview with Mick Hucknall of Simply Red in an office environment where “there were no health ‘n safety rules, no editorial reviews, and what felt like no bosses either,” to interviews with Kylie when she was the little budgie to an “alfalfaforaging Earth Mother Madonna”.

Along the way we are treated to an array of boyfriends, flat-shares and a depressing account of the slide from the days of rock bands who, whilst trashing hotels, wrote and performed music of staggering intensity, to, in Patterson’s words: “If the nineties had faded to a yellowing parchment already, a new phrase was now defining pop culture as we knew it, and still know it, to this day. “Celebrity Culture”.”

What are some 2017 Deckchair Cinema highlights?

There were so many highlights this year. Our opening night film, The Baulkham Hills African Ladies Troupe, included a Q&A with some of the women. Their personal stories of overcoming trauma experienced in their home countries evidently made a powerful impact on many in the audience.

The Darwin Festival Program Launch in June was a really great night, and of course DIFF in September was a concentrated period of buzz and excitement.

We’ve had a great run of guests this year, including screening presentations and Q&As from Australian actors David Wenham, Jack Thompson and Osamah Sami. We welcomed our first international guest Aahana Kumra, Mumbaibased star of the Indian black comedy Lipstick Under My Burkha.

The stage is wide open for anyone to perform poetry, prose, song lyrics or even a blog! An afternoon of word-ly appreciation every last Sunday of the month.

We’ve got three weeks left of the Deckie before it shuts shop.

What stands out?

I’m really looking forward to Ali’s Wedding, our closing night film (along with Aussie doco Mountain). It got really good audiences and people just loved it.

It had a limited run, like any of our films do, because we just have one screen and we’re outdoors, but it received such a good reception with some people seeing it twice, we’ve decided to put it on again. Another one I was quite excited about is Lady Macbeth. It received good reviews and I’ve heard a lot about Florence Pugh, the main actress. Her performance is astounding. It’s a period drama, pretty dark and powerful stuff.

What are your picks of the docos in this program?

There’s a really cute movie coming up called Chicken People. It’s very kooky, about people who show chickens. It’s about the year leading up to a judging show and the people who love chickens — who have a very good idea about the personality of chickens.

Midnight Basketball Grand Final

WHEN SHE’S PHOTOGRAPHING PERFORMERS IN THE EXCITEMENT OF LIVE THEATRE, IONA FRANCIS MUST DECIDE WHETHER TO HANG BACK AND OBSERVE, OR DRAW OUT THE INDIVIDUAL.

Her favourite images are those that show the emotion the performers feel being on stage, especially a black-and-white photo she took of a leaping dancer at a youth ballet production.

“I’m either a fly on the wall, watching the performers and in the background clicking away, or I spend a long time talking to all these individual characters and really trying to create an image that expresses their personality into my images,” she says.

“That’s probably the most powerful image I’ve taken, because it’s such a clean image of a lovely girl. She’s only 15, and she’s just leaping through the air and it’s stunning.”

In the space of just a couple of years, Francis has turned her Instagram account into a documentary album of Darwin’s vibrant youth arts scene, capturing the backstage excitement and on-stage intimacy of theatre.

“It’s always been about the arts,” the 17-year-old Darwin High student says.

Cheer on the two top teams as they battle it out on the court to be crowned the winner of Midnight Basketball Darwin’s tournament five.

“I started my photography through Instagram and it didn’t really become a hobby until maybe two years ago.

It’s always been about arts. It brings out the passion in my photography.

You’re not only photographing to get a good photo, but to show more of a story behind it.”

As well as snapping the stage, Francis is working on creative photography and was a finalist in the Head-On Photo Festival with a striking series of pictures of two girls lying among tropical flowers.

“I spent around three months working on these images… It was a really awesome time to dive into my photography and experiment with the lengths that I could go to with my images and how I creative I could be.”

“It doesn’t take too long to film a trick shot, usually around 20 minutes, but when it’s a difficult one it takes a lot longer,” he explains.

“I’ve had a lot of good responses from Indigenous mob, it helps me get out there.”

A former Wanderers player and footy-lover, Clements developed his improbable shots while kicking around with his brother in 2013, before posting the best ones on Facebook, and seeing them go viral.

“My little brother made it up as a little challenge I think, and then from there as I got older I just kept practising, and then started doing impossible shots that people just find crazy. Most recently I’ve added in the Indigenous and Torres Strait flag to the video, to help with recognition for us. Hopefully it can inspire more kids around Darwin to get into sports.”

Now Clements is turning his skills to photography, in particular sports.

He’s working with the City of Darwin Launch program to shoot events around Darwin and wants to to continue to photograph NTFL games.

The Darwin-born 20-year-old has spent the last few years studying at Bond University on the Gold Coast but believes the NT has a multitude of stories yet to be told on film.

“Darwin’s my home and I feel a real connection with the place. I really want to tell Territory stories through film and the skills I’ve been developing over the last few years,” he says.

“I really want to make it work. That’s my focus, northbound for the immediate future.”

Hazeldine has already been telling local stories of a different sort, through his other love, photography.

He joined the Darwin City Council’s Launch media team and quickly made his mark documenting events like the Pride March, which he captured with vivid colour and imagination.

“That was just amazing to see such a display on Mitchell Street. The most people I’ve seen at once in the city, there was a lot to take photos of.”

Mixing up old film skills with new, Hazeldine has taken to using “an old Nikon 3mm film camera from the 70s”, getting the negatives digitised into high-resolution scans, and then editing them.

It’s this sort of attention to detail that drives the aspiring director in his filmmaking too.

“You wouldn’t put yourself through that much stress if you didn’t have to,” he says.

The former Casuarina Senior College student says he might not be so driven if it wasn’t for an early success that confirmed his passion for the craft.

When he was in Year 11, Hazeldine and a friend won a small grant to shoot a short horror film set in Brown’s Mart. It went on to win the people’s choice award at the (now-defunct) Fist Full of Films Festival.

“That was probably the inciting incident,” he says.

She’ll have no shortage of photos to remember her time here.

With Year 12 coming to an end, the Casuarina Senior College student plans to spend next year combining his two loves: capturing the thrill of sports on camera and mastering those impossible shots. Watch this space.

“With any kind of creative person, the only thing that stops people is a lack of encouragement and people believing in them. Once you believe in yourself, you’re able to pursue the path that you want to – ­if you believe that you can do it.”

ASSAULT There’s a lot of sadness, anger and fear in the world these days; interacting with the news has become overwhelming, and the ability to not be affected in one way or another feels pretty impossible.

Each story is a tender morsel, with episodes sitting between three and nine minutes in length.

Perhaps it’s the intensity of the stories or the thoughtful insights you get from people at their most vulnerable, but I have savoured these small snippets. The length works in favour of these bursts of kindness; the stories succinctly and gently capture the precious gesture that altered the trajectory of one’s world.

The Mechanics of Comedy Comedy comes in a myriad of different colours and fabrics, but amongst the great haberdashery of comic styles, there is a science that underpins the techniques a comedian uses to tickle your funny bones – the mechanics of comedy.

This is the first in a series of pieces exploring my favourite comedians and the techniques they employ to make you laugh.

The Character Assassin These comedians cheekily employ caustic humour at the expense of their friends and others.

Experts in this style of comedy are generally some of the most talented wordsmiths. The English practitioners of this dark art include Jimmy Carr (8 Out of 10 Cats and The Big Fat Quiz), Joan Rivers, Jack Dee, Simon Amstell (Never Mind the Buzzcocks) and Glaswegian Frankie Boyle (Mock the Week and various comedy specials). Australian comic Will Anderson is perhaps our best proponent of this form.

The Character Assassins are often masters at the classic technique of expectation inversion, which involves placing an unexpected and often dark twist on the logical conclusion of a joke. An example of this is the joke Frankie Boyle used on Never Mind the Buzzcocks when introducing Michelle Williams, former Destiny Child (least famous) member: “Meet Michelle Williams, one of the world’s most beautiful,

creative and most successful singers of our age’s…friend.”

The American comedy roast tradition is another forum for Character Assassin. The concept behind the comedy roast was born in the 60s through the in-house comedian Friars Club roasts and later popularised by Dean Martin’s televised celebrity roasts.

The idea behind a roast is to invite a celebrity guest and a panel (or gaggle) of friends and comedians and for each of the comedians to fire jokes at the expense of the guest of honour (and the other panel members). Some the most skillful ‘roast’ exponents include Jeff Ross, Greg Giraldo, Sarah Silverman, Amy Schumer and the father of Friars Roasts Don Rickles.

cruelty. The expert Character Assassin manages to maintain a charming and cheeky playfulness combined with clever and expectation defying one-liners. The roasters are accordingly regarded as the true poets of stand up, such is their skill to shape language.

The Build Up is here and with it the humidity is skyrocketing – the heat is on and so is the sweat! The kids are ratty and, let’s be honest, parenting seems so much harder.

If you’ve lived in Darwin with kids during the Build Up I’m guessing you are familiar with the likes of Leanyer Recreation Park, the Wave Pool, Flip Out and even if you haven’t been to Darwin Ice Skating yet, it’s probably on your radar. But, what else is there to do?

I recently dropped in on the Royal Flying Doctors Service (RFDS) Tourist Facility at Stokes Hill Wharf for my first visit. We had kids in our gang ranging from 4-14 years old and honestly, when I described where we were going they were less than impressed. However when they got inside and experienced the state of the art virtual reality experience (VR), life-sized talking holograms and a fully decked out medical evacuation plane where they could sit in the pilot’s seat, they thought it was sensational.

We all strapped on the goofy looking VR headsets and incredibly, there I was on Stokes Hill on 14 February 1942 when the Japanese planes bombed Darwin. You get a 360 degree view of the whole attack from the wharf and then you are flying up in the air looking down as the Japanese planes fly around you – it’s pretty cool.

While VR may conjure up images of too much gaming and indoor time, the RFDS Tourist Facility captures the modern obsession with screens and turns the Bombing of Darwin into a truly accessible, educational and worthwhile experience. My kids certainly got a lot out of it.

So while getting cool and wet is always a priority in the Build Up, the RFDS Tourist Facility is something different and interesting. Enjoy lunch at the wharf afterwards and pick up some lovely sea breezes.

Locals can get a Territory pass, so give it a try when you are frustrated and hot and pulling your hair out trying to think of somewhere icy cool to take the kids.

The Daly River Girl TESSA ROSE’S DEBUT PLAY IS A COMPELLING PERSONAL STORY OF HARDSHIP, LOVE AND RESILIENCE.

Following an extensive career in acting and dance across Australia, Rose has put pen to paper for the first time to produce this autobiographical one-woman show.

Her story is a tapestry of themes including growing up with nonAboriginal families in Perth, first love, domestic violence, theatrical success and finding her way back to home and kin at Daly River.

She says working on the show was a difficult process at times, and she needed a full four years to bring it to fruition.

“Delving into my childhood could be

very painful. I would have to leave it alone for months at a time from bringing memories to the surface I thought had been safely locked away in my brain.”

Creative partnerships have been key to the process, not least with Director Alex Galeazzi who she has worked with on previous creative projects.

“Due to the personal nature of the story, needing to feel safe and secure, you have to have that special connection. Alex and I have a truly beautiful creative bond that has bought The Daly River Girl to where it is now, ready for the stage.”

Galeazzi agrees it’s a unique creative partnership. He says the play is a culturally significant contribution to Australian theatre and one he’s privileged to help bring to audiences.

He says Rose’s emotional journey is also supported by a combination of theatrical mediums that will thrill and move audiences.

“It’s complex sound design meets Indigenous animation together with filmed imagery, all from a team of established film, sound, lighting and animation artists.”

For Rose, writing her first play and having the world premiere here in Darwin is a dream come true.

The story is inspired by the historical tale of Te Aokapurangi, a young maiden from Mokoia Island who single-handedly saved her people from slaughter.

Epic in scale and largely abstract in nature, Mana Wahine embodies ancient Maori practices of prayer, song and mythology in a fertile fusion of choreography, music, audio visual, lighting and performance design.

From the stunning opening, where five ghostly bodies emerge from a silky cowled earth, to the spine-tingling finale showing the wahine embracing their masculine side, this is definitely one of those ‘lingers long after’ experiences for the beholder.

As I sifted through great archives of prints narrating a vast history, peppered with rich subjective experiences, I realised they were creating a grand narrative that I will be trying to unstitch and understand for a long time. I felt a sense of FOMO, fear of missing out, as I flipped through pages and pages of tapestry-like lithographs featuring creatures, people and pathways, knowing that while I was viewing and enjoying something immense, I was missing out on so many other volumes that were surely just as enthralling. I felt like Alice down a very spiralling rabbit hole, glad that there was an online archive for me to fall down at any time.

After 33 years of operation, Darwin’s Framed Gallery is set to close its doors at the end of this year. Off The Leash had a chat with gallery owner Anne Phelan ahead of their final exhibition, Reflections.

How did Framed Gallery start?

I became the accidental owner of the gallery in 1985 when I loaned some money to a picture framer who came to start up in Darwin. When he suddenly left town I had to hurriedly learn how to run a business! Before that I had been a teacher for 25 years.

This feeling of a hidden expanse opening up came to me again as I wandered the fabulous and richly textured paintings and feathered sculptures of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards at MAGNT, (dropping a curtsey for the Werewolf woman) and standing quietly in the dancing fields of the Salon des Refuses at Charles Darwin University.

What drove you to keep the gallery going?

I have always admired the hand made. Artists and craftsmen of Australia need outlets for their work, so providing this opportunity became my creed.

Why are you closing down?

We are reluctantly closing as my partner and I are turning 80 and 77 respectively. We both suffer with deteriorating eyesight so it has simply become too difficult to continue. Darwin will remain our home, and we will continue our standing invitation to visiting artists to avail themselves of free accommodation, so we are not totally separating from the art fraternity.

What will happen to Framed’s extensive collection?

Over the next three months, where permitted by the artist, we are hoping to sell the artworks at reduced prices.

What have been the highlights over the past 33 years?

There have been many including 100 Years of Australian Art, showing work by Arthur Streeton, John Perceval, Charles Blackman, Arthur Boyd and Sidney Nolan in 1994; Bukmak Galiwinku, a collaborative workshop and exhibition between artists in Galiwinku and Sydney in 2004; and the popular exhibition of John Lennon’s drawings in 2008. We have exhibited 300 Australian artists from interstate and have held 260 exhibitions featuring NT artists. For me, Framed’s highlights have extended beyond exhibitions to a variety of workshops and classes, interstate and overseas promotions and other art services including assisting with the design and production of awards like the Brolga and Triple Crown Awards, and a Law Courts Crest that had to be created from local materials – buffalo horn, ironwood and pearl shell!

AS AN OUTSIDER FROM TASMANIA, VISITING DARWIN WAS A STRANGE MIX OF EXPERIENCES, A COCKTAIL OF FAMILIARITY AND OTHERNESS. The attitude of most Darwinites seems to be one of a relaxed but certain pride in their unique place and space, without any of the cringe I know well from my home state of Tasmania. Tasmanians often seem torn between frustration at the seeming backwardness of some elements of our state, and pride in the things we know are world class. Darwinites seem more resolved – both in the knowledge that there is nowhere else like the NT, and that it needs not be striving to be anything other than itself. This is a very refreshing and dynamic space to enter. This being said, I felt quite at home, despite all the vast swathes of land I had to cross, until I stepped into Nomad Gallery. I most certainly was not in Kansas anymore.

Reflections This retrospective exhibition represents Geoff Todd’s art over a 28 year period, a time during which Todd and Framed Gallery have frequently worked together.

Sourced from the artist’s private collection, interstate, Indonesia and Austria, most of the work has not been shown in Darwin.

Each example evokes memories of Todd’s style while illustrating the evolution of his art over the period.

DON WHYTE FRAMING

Certain voices float to the surface of the whole and have left a mark on my mind. At Nomad, there are the delicate prints belonging to Winsome Jobling, hand-painted (if my memory serves me rightly) depictions of panties and ladies underwear. They are fragile yet strong images, objectified and raised for appraisal in prints that were strangely vulnerable and full of ethereal sweetness. At the Salon, it was a demure little landscape, sitting meekly among huge textured canvases, dancing with optical effects, colour and story. It was the clarity that somehow got under my skin – each tree, bush and leaf seemed to stand out like the tiny fronds in a terrarium. The painting was by Winnie Sampi, who tells about places to hunt, find food, and places to leave alone. In the moment after reading that small, authoritative statement, I felt that I was grateful to the artists of this vast place, for creating questions in me I may never otherwise have had the insight to ask.

Anna van Stralen’s work reflects upon the contrast between human structures and breathtaking natural places. Her subject matter is currently the interplay between artificial constructions and chaotic natural forms. She recently completed a residency at Accomplice.

OSEPH TAWADROS IS A LEADING OUD VIRTUOSO, COMPOSER AND THREE TIME ARIA AWARD WINNER. He was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2016 for services to music and composition, and brings his trio to Darwin for the first time this November in what is sure to be an unforgettable night of incredible music.

Please tell us about this beautiful instrument that you have become so well known for, and that you hold so dear.

The oud is a Middle Eastern fretless lute with Ancient Egyptian origins. It’s the most popular instrument in the Middle East and is considered the king of all instruments. It is believed to have been brought to Europe by a player named Zeryab, and then spread around Europe becoming the lute which then became the guitar, so it’s a very historically significant instrument.

Why was this the instrument for you?

I fell in love with the instrument after watching an Egyptian movie about the famous Egyptian composer Sayed Darwich. I was also drawn to the instrument by my Grandfather who also played it. Being in Australia, I felt the oud was a link to my Egyptian heritage and culture and I learnt a lot about

that from learning the instrument. I’m very passionate about this instrument and love the journey it has taken me on thus far.

Do you have a favourite oud – and what makes it so special?

The oud I currently play was built by Veysel and Cengiz Sarikus in 2011. I have a sponsorship with these great makers and worked with them on a special seven-course instrument, which is a part of their JT Signature Series. They build me a new instrument every two years or so, but I still continue with the first one they built for me. It’s been everywhere with me, in all sorts of environments, including the Egyptian revolution of 2011.

You’re bringing your trio to Darwin, including your brother James, who plays the riq. How would you describe the music that’s created when the oud, the riq and the piano combine?

The music that will be performed are original compositions spanning a few albums. Although I create the framework, each musician in the ensemble plays a vital role and brings their own spirit to it. It’s very interactive and there is a lot of room for improvisation and spontaneity. Each piece has a lot of influences and is ambiguous in style. The music is emotional and I hope the audience experience that journey with us.

DON’T BE AFRAID! THEY MIGHT BE LOUD, BUT THEY ARE DAMN GOOD FUN TOO. And while they might be a new name in town, there will be a few familiar faces amongst this seasoned set of Top End talent. Front man Lindsay Wright and guitarist Sam Clements spoke to Off The Leash about their latest collaboration and about playing the music that they love.

As a new band on the scene in Darwin, what are you most looking forward to about gigging around town?

The majority of us have performed in bands throughout Darwin over the last decade or so. I’m most looking forward to getting back up on stage in front of a crowd and doing what I love – making fun music that I hope people enjoy!

How would you describe your band’s style of music?

We didn’t set out to fit a certain genre or style but I would say that, if anything, we would be considered punk. It’s fast, it’s energetic, it can get offensive at times but, at its core, it’s good fun!

I’m also looking forward to getting the opportunity to support bands that you wouldn’t get down south.

It’s a good pond up here – and it’s a small pond. There are opportunities aplenty to play – and play we shall!

Who are the band’s influences?

Our influences are wide and varied.

All of us are fans of late 90s and early 2000s punk bands and while some of us got sucked down that emo-rabbit-hole of tight jeans and screamy/whiny vocals and never really made it back, we all share a love of some form of punk or another.

What are the challenges for a new band in Darwin?

One of the main challenges is definitely the lack of venues that are willing to book an original band, especially one that is as noisy as ours. So far we have played the Railway Club in Parap, and we frequent the Happy Yess as well. But that’s pretty much it. That said, being a smaller city, the music scene is pretty tight-knit and everyone seems

willing to support one another.

It’s nice.

You’ve put together the “Big Notes and Sore Throats” gig at the Rails in November, describe the night you’ve got planned for us.

We have a stellar line-up of some of Darwin’s most energetic acts. We try to get out to see a lot of shows and have been very impressed by everyone we’ve got on board. We’ve kept the line-up a little heavier than we had initially planned and really want to kick this one off with a bang. Helping us keep the night at maximum decibels will be We Burn Bridges, Snapchat Regret and Summit. These bands never fail to get the crowd in the mosh pit!

FROM A FIVE-PERSON TOWN ON THE MURRUMBIDGEE RIVER, TO NASHVILLE TENNESSE, WILLIAM CRIGHTON IS INSPIRED TO MAKE MUSIC BY THE PLACES HE LIVES. WE EXPECT HE’LL BE OVERFLOWING WITH INSPIRATION, WHEN HE VISITS US IN THE TROPICAL NORTH THIS BUILD UP. You released your debut self-titled album last year. Can you tell us a little bit about the place where you wrote and recorded the album – because I hear it was somewhere pretty special.

It was in a place called Burrinjuck, which is a dam toward the top of the Murrumbidgee River in NSW. It’s a special spot and we were living in the old village, which at the time had only five other permanent residents.

There was no phone reception or TV. We were living in a fibro place that was built to house the workers and spent our days fishing, gardening and exploring. When it came time to record, some mates and I pooled our gear and set up in the house.

How did that location inspire the album?

Being isolated from society – and by the most part technology – gives you space to explore both the natural environment around you, and your own mind, free from distraction. It helped me to focus and unlock things within me that otherwise would have laid dormant and unexplored. This land has a very strong spirit that can inspire all sorts of things – the challenge is opening yourself to it and remaining open.

CRIGHTON

Speaking of musically inspiring locations – you’ve spent a few years living in Nashville. Was it as amazing as we might imagine, or do we have an overly romantic notion of being a musician living in Nashville?

I’m answering these questions sitting on my bed at my mate’s place west

of Nashville in the bush. This is my favourite part of Nashville. There’s a lot of history here and a lot of it is very dark, but there’s a lot of beauty too.

I found the city itself amazing the first time I came here – I’d never seen anything like it; music everywhere and a lot of it I really enjoyed. Some of my fondest memories took place here. I was younger then though, in my early 20s, and I don’t have the same feeling of amazement as I did then, but I have a respect for the place as so much great music has come out of here – and some of my closest mates are here. Now I like visiting from time to time.

And how did Nashville influence your music? Have there been places that are more influential?

Living in Nashville, I realised that a lot of great musicians who bleed to be in the industry are hamstrung by the industry itself. By that I mean they forsake what they really want to do artistically to put food on the table and be ‘successful’. That’s a choice and that’s okay, but I’d rather play the music I want to play, live in Australia and shift furniture when I’m broke. Nashville always tends to lean on me to put parameters on the music for the sake of fitting into a market, and what’s the point of that?

It only leads to unhappiness. It’s definitely a love hate relationship... but there is a lot of love.

From Nashville to Darwin – you must be excited to be visiting us this November?

I’ve never been to Darwin before. I’ve heard so many good things though and I can’t wait to come up and play.

AUTOMATIC SUCK MECHANISM IS THE MUCH ANTICPATED DEBUT ALBUM FROM DARWIN OUTFIT GORED MATADORS. They'll be setting it loose on the world this November at Happy Yess, taking listeners on a voyeuristic journey through Darwin’s back streets and suburbs accompanied by some colourful, if not dodgy, locals.

Inspired by the town that made them, Gored Matadors lurch through this ode to the capital of the Top End with bombastic fury and venom not seen this side of the millennium.

Zombie outbreaks? Check. Sticking it to “The Man”? Check. Being “bad”?

Check.

Formed in 2011 by drummer Allan Kirk and singer/guitarist Tim Foiler, Gored Matadors have grown in size and strength adding bassist Phillip Eaton and Rod Fitzgerald on sax.

They have garnered a loyal local following through loud and chaotic gigs around Darwin.

After six years together, singer and guitarist Tim Foiler says it’s a relief to have finally made this recording.

“It’s been on the cards for a long time but life just kept getting in the way. A brief rundown of some of the band members lives would indicate personal disaster after personal disaster. When we realised that the band was one of the few positive things we had in our lives, the momentum took on a life of its own.”

Foiler says he’s proud of what the band has achieved, and grateful for bassist Eaton whose knowledge and experience in the music industry has guided the band to make some good decisions.

“Getting a proper digital release available on music streaming websites is quite exciting. It also means my friends back home in the UK can hear it with ease.”

The EP launch will be a celebration to mark the band’s return to the stage, and punters should expect the same chaotic, noisy show the Gored Matadors have delivered in the past, with a stack of new songs added.

“We’ve expanded our musical palate somewhat and I think people may be surprised to hear some of our new songs. I’m certainly excited to play them!”

Paul Kelly Darwin audiences never miss out on a Paul Kelly tour – which isn’t a huge surprise given the long musical connection he’s had with the Territory. From co-writing 'Treaty' and 'From Little Things, Big Things Grow', Paul Kelly has contributed to some of the most important Northern Territory storytelling.

His latest album Life is Fine has been a smash hit, delivering him his first number one album after almost 40 years of recording music and, following a number of concept albums, sees him returning to the sound that made him so successful early on his career.

Kelly was in Darwin only recently, joining Dan Sultan and AB Original on stage at the National Indigenous Music Awards in August, and returns for two nights this November, bringing with him Rockhampton duo Busby Marou to kick off what is bound to be a truly memorable night of music.
