elcome to the first edition of 2017 and, if this edition is anything to go by, this year is going to be a big one.

Here at Off The Leash, we are celebrating our 10 year anniversary – no mean feat for a small, not-for-profit organisation. Since our first edition in July 2007 we’ve been promoting and celebrating the unique lifestyle, culture and community of the Top End with our definitive monthly events guide across music, performing arts, visual arts, literature, food and drink, film, festivals and community events.

This month, we consider the important role the arts play in our society – past, present and future – as the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory look to acquire a significant Territory influenced work by Chinese born artist Guan Wei – see page 4.

The humble yarn is a powerful thing and this month Jimmy Barnes brings his first spoken word tour to the Territory.

Based on his recently released self-penned childhood memoirs, join him for an evening of stories and songs.

Territory

THE MUSEUM AND ART GALLERY OF THE NORTHERN TERRITORY (MAGNT) IS THE CUSTODIAN OF A SIGNIFICANT COLLECTION OF ARTWORKS REFLECTING OUR DISTINCTIVE PART OF THE WORLD. MAGNT ARE HOPING TO GROW THIS DIVERSE COLLECTION WITH AN IMPORTANT PAINTING BY INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED ARTIST GUAN WEI.

The outback at night can be a scary place full of creepy noises and strange cries, especially for someone who’s never been camping. For Chinese born artist Guan Wei, sleeping under the stars at Gunbalanya in Arnhem Land was an unnerving experience, but ultimately, he recalls a feeling of awe at the majestic landscape.

Guan Wei moved to Australia in 1990 following the Tiananmen Square massacre in his hometown of Beijing and went on to become a major figure in the Australian art scene. In 2006 he was one of five artists of migrant background selected to take part in a Culture Trackers Artist Camp organised by Injalak Arts and Crafts and 24HR Art, now the Northern Centre for Contemporary Art. In Gunbalanya he worked closely with Aboriginal artists, visiting rock art sites and learning about their culture and became fascinated by the parallels between Aboriginal culture and the Taoist philosophy of ancient China. The experience also sparked a new consideration of Australia’s colonial times and early European depictions of the desert as a “harsh, savage, cruel and deserted place.” Guan Wei’s experiences at the camp inspired a series of paintings he named A Mysterious Land.

MAGNT now has the opportunity to acquire one of the works from this significant series. The painting, ‘A Mysterious Land No.9’, evocatively captures the artist’s first encounter with the outback and his view of the similarities between Aboriginal culture and the Taoism. The painting has recognisable Territory features including a termite mound and a menacing looking crocodile, alongside which Guan Wei’s signature faceless men hide in the scrub, their gaping mouths expressing the terror they feel. A broken branch stump recollects a close encounter with a falling limb during the camp.

His first experience of remote Australia certainly had a powerful resonance, an experience common to many, and Guan Wei hopes that through his painting people might reacquaint themselves with nature, embrace nature, even return to nature.

Assistant Director Louise Tegart observed the importance of building the collection of artworks with major acquisitions of significant artists that have an NT focus.

“The MAGNT collection is part of the nationally distributed collection and belongs to the people of the Northern Territory. It is a record of artistic practice in the NT and is an insight into cultural responses to this diverse landscape,” she said.

Tegart says Guan Wei’s painting is an important example of this.

“Acquiring the work joins it with other works of the NT by significant artists. Growing the collection in turn evolves our understanding of what is truly unique about where we live, and fosters the endless creative possibilities for future generations.”

THE WORD ‘UNIQUE’ IS THROWN AROUND A LOT – BUT IN THE CASE OF THE ANNUAL TIWI ART SALE AND FOOTY GRAND FINAL, IT CAPTURES THE ESSENCE OF THE DAY PERFECTLY. Footy and art aren’t generally viewed as complimentary flavours, but on the Tiwi Islands 80 kilometres north of Darwin, they’re just part of the bread and butter of everyday life.

Jimmy Barnes WORKING CLASS BOY AUSTRALIAN ROCK ICON JIMMY BARNES BRINGS HIS WORKING CLASS BOY TOUR TO THE TOP END THIS MARCH. MOST KNOW HIM FROM his time as the lead vocalist of Cold Chisel or as a solo performer – but this show differs from what you would expect. In his first spoken word tour, based on his recently released self-penned childhood memoir, Barnes shares stories from his troubled childhood.

Off The Leash caught up with the singer and author during a recent break in touring.

This tour is a little different to your previous shows, what was the inspiration behind Working Class Boy? This tour was inspired by my book. I did a few book release events and found a lot of people seemed to be touched by the subject matter. Many people have similar stories or they have been through some of the things I talk about in the book, so I started to work out how I could take this out to more people.

I had a number of songs that reminded me of different times in my life, so I put it all together and this tour is what I came up with.

IT’S A SIMPLE FORMULA – A STAGE, SIX PEOPLE AND THEIR STORIES – BUT WITH NINE SOLD OUT SHOWS IN A ROW, SPUN continues to prove the humble yarn is a powerful thing indeed. Get in on the magic and join them at the Northern Territory Library for a night inspired by the theme uncovered.

The Territory is full of incredible storytellers, as Creative Producer Johanna Bell knows, and the first SPUN for 2017 is no exception. You’ll travel back in time, dip inside the browning pages of a forgotten photo

album and peek between the sheets as locals reveal their histories, their hearts and a couple of well-kept secrets.

Bell says the theme ‘uncovered’ is perfect for a night at the library.

“SPUN is all about uncovering stories and the NT Library is the keeper of Territory stories. They document, share and grow history and we feel like through SPUN, we’re taking part in that history making process as well.”

After two highly successful years the SPUN team is taking their story telling mission to the next level with more community partnerships and their very own podcast, SPUN stories.

“SPUN exists to connect strangers and strengthen community, ” Bell said, “so we’re looking at how we can help other organisations actualise their storytelling missions."

Has the reception Working Class Boy received differed from the performances you’ve done previously?

This is a different show to anything I have ever done before, but is being received very well. I’m not sure the audience knows what it is in for until we start. Then it is like a roller coaster, taking them and myself for a ride. It is very cool and I am enjoying this as much as any show I have ever done.

Have you been to Darwin before?

I’ve been coming to Darwin for nearly 40 years. I love playing up in the Territory and some of the best shows I have ever played have been in Darwin.

So I am very excited about coming back. I think the NT is one is the most beautiful places in the world. There is nowhere else like it. It is hard and challenging but spectacularly beautiful. There are amazing people in and around the Territory and a lot of great musicians too.

As someone who has been a key figure in the Australian music scene for many years, how do you think the industry has changed?

The music industry changes all the time. It is like life. You either grow with it or it will wash all over you. Change is a good thing. But in music – like life – some things remain constant. Being in touch with your audience and your heart are integral.

Your show draws attention to the work of the Luke Batty Foundation, how can people get behind this great organisation?

The reason I draw attention to the Luke Batty Foundation is because there are so many people being affected by domestic violence. In my book I talk about the experiences I had growing up being surrounded by domestic violence and I think that as a society we need to address this as soon as possible. Too many women and children are dying because of this. Domestic violence is tearing too many families apart, killing too many good people and leaving families in tatters. It happens in all sorts of families. Black, white, rich and poor. We need to stop it. Rosie Batty has been working to make changes to how we approach this problem. I think she is incredibly brave and I support her work .

RAW COMEDY IS THE ANNUAL HUNT FOR AUSTRALIA’S AS YET UNDISCOVERED WIT – IT’S WHERE THE NATION’S BEST AND BOLDEST COMEDY ATHLETES JUMP IN HEAD FIRST AND COMPETE FOR A PRIZED PODIUM POSITION. This year 19 Darwin comedians will take the plunge in front of hundreds at the Darwin Entertainment Centre.

Umpired by Canadian comic Mae Martin, there’ll be perfect 10s, death defying belly flops and some tentative dipping of toes in the water as contestants willing and able make the bravest of comedy leaps.

2015 RAW winner Amy Hetherington reckons it’s the best value night of comedy you’ll see all year.

“Almost 20 comedians with different styles, different angles and really different experiences," she said, "It’s a smorgasbord, something for everyone.”

Competitors have just five minutes of original comedy time to win over audiences and judges and the night’s gold medallist gets the chance to battle it out for the comedy crown at Melbourne’s National Grand Final in April.

Previous names in the trophy cabinet include Chris Lilley, Hannah Gadsby and Peter Helliar, proving RAW really can be the diving board to comedy success. So get your Mexican wave on and ticket-up for the Darwin comedy spectating event of the year.

Assuming the worst, Ikan’s parents hire a legendary seafarer to look for his corpse. He finds nothing. The Age of Bones traces what happened to Ikan – from the day he left his Indonesian village, to his eventual imprisonment in Australia and his fight to return home.

Thibodeaux was inspired by the real-life stories of around 60 Indonesian boys who were jailed in Australia for working on refugee boats.

“I heard of these boys, and my own son was 15 at the time,” she said, “I had this real moment of identification and empathy with their family’s stories.”

The play, mostly set under the ocean, incorporates shadow puppets, projection and live music to stunning effect. Thibodeaux wanted to

explore the heavy themes in a less obvious, more visually and poetically interesting way.

“Ikan’s best friend is a hammerhead shark and the judge is an octopus.

I started to play on words and with Australia being known as ‘down under’ it was an easy choice. I took the story straight under the sea and it developed from there.”

The next morning, head back to Rapid Creek for the Sunday morning market. I grew up only two minutes away from there, and I recall every other Sunday bounding down Oliver Street, arriving at the markets with a mission; first stop: rice cakes, second stop: waffles, third stop: paw paw salad. Years have passed since then but my mission has rarely wavered, save for a stop at Jay’s Coffee cart. Rapid Creek market has the perfect blend of fresh produce, hot food, and an exciting atmosphere - I often think it is like stepping into another world. After picking up your fresh fruit and veg for the week, head over to the Nightcliff market for a sit down breaky. Find your seat in front of the live music stand first, then line up for a much-loved Ken’s crepe. If it is a hot day, I recommend an iced tea from Just Coffee.

I spent some time deliberating what podcast to review for my very first assault your ears column, and while my choice is one that contains confronting subject matter, injustices and exposes racial divides, it delves into one of Australia’s least known serial killings – it is essential listening.

In the spate of five months, three Indigenous children were killed in Bowraville, a small town in the mid-north coast of NSW. The three victims lived on the same street, and were last seen at house parties in The Mission, a part of Bowraville that is unofficially segregated from the white side of town. The disappearances of these children were first brushed aside,

with families told they probably just went ‘walkabout’.

Produced by The Australian newspaper, Bowraville is narrated by crime reporter Dan Box who covered this investigation for many years. Box isn’t the main voice in this podcast, instead offering occasional first-person narration and explanation. This approach opens a huge space for one of the best things about this podcast: the voices of the victims’ families.

These are hard voices to hear because of the sad stories they tell, but they offer us courageous insight into a devastating reality.

DARWIN I LOVE YOU

…even in the Build Up Like many Darwinites, we’ve just returned from the annual Christmas holidays in cooler climes. And now the sweat is dripping – and I’m thinking the grass is definitely greener – as I scrub endless mould from the car, the furniture and my clothes.

Being hot and grumpy, I wonder how we (i.e. me!) will cope with the heat and the rain and how I’m going to entertain the kids – but their excitement at arriving back in Darwin quickly reminds me how much I love the glorious rainy Wet season days and how good this time of year can be. Here’re a few Wet season survival tips.

With a few days to play before the school year started and, at the boys’ request, we had to go to Crocosuarus Cove for some “crocodile snorkeling” in the little pool, which is separated by a large glass window to a croc enclosure packed with juvenile crocs. Another favourite here is the reptile house, which has a great collection and plenty of fun for kids spotting the animals in their enclosures.

A trip to the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory was also a must because the boys had missed “Sweetheart” – the kids’ area is also great. We watched a storm role in at Nightcliff Beach and caught a

moment when the rain subsided for an hour or so at Nightcliff Pool. The café next door is great for a game of oversize Connect 4.

Evenings are well spent with friends at the Darwin Ski Club, where kids can swim in the little wading pool and go hermit crab hunting out front. It was here I watched a beautiful and moody Wet season sunset, and my troubles with mold and prickly heat couldn’t have been more distant.

The kids were having a ball and I thought Darwin, you rock for families all year-round.

One of my favourite things to do on the weekend is eating out, in and around Rapid Creek. Having grown up in the ever green, quaint Northern suburb, I am of course biased, but I believe there is something for everyone here. Come Saturday morning, the hustle and bustle of Frilly’s is sure to wake you up and put a smile on the start of your weekend.

The volunteers make cappuccinos, mochachinos and baby-chinos (and much more!) quickly, allowing you time to relax and admire the community garden. I recommend visiting the back of the garden, walking past the vegie patch, and saying good morning to the chickens who are always happy to have a chat. After a quick look at the Frilly’s Op Shop, head over to Rossiter Street where Café Central sits unassuming, surrounded by a deck, behind a row of palms.

My favourite on the menu here is Eggs Benedict - Café Central never disappoints. The perfect choice for Saturday night dinner is Rapid Café. Housed in Rapid Creek shopping complex, this gorgeous little establishment serves up Japanese meals that are finger licking good!

Keen to shred? No need to pre-register, just show up on the day. Under 18s will have to wear a helmet (provided) and entry is free! There’ll also be music and other activities for spectator entertainment as well as food for sale. Even if you haven’t visited the park before, come and be amazed by the dedication of Darwin’s skaters. Be shocked and wowed and maybe even inspired to get involved yourself.

The next morning, head back to Rapid Creek for the Sunday morning market. I grew up only two minutes away from there, and I recall every other Sunday bounding down Oliver Street, arriving at the markets with a mission; first stop: rice cakes, second stop: waffles, third stop: paw paw salad. Years have passed since then but my mission has rarely wavered, save for a stop at Jay’s Coffee cart. Rapid Creek market has the perfect blend of fresh produce, hot food, and an exciting atmosphere - I often think it is like stepping into another world. After picking up your fresh fruit and veg for the week, head over to the Nightcliff market for a sit down breaky. Find your seat in front of the live music stand first, then line up for a much-loved Ken’s crepe. If it is a hot day, I recommend an iced tea from Just Coffee.

Unwrapping the newspaper bound, light and crispy fish and chips, and tucking in with the golden Darwin sunset behind, is the perfect way to end your weekend. The only problem is figuring out what to have for dinner on Monday – no need to worry, Famished on Nightcliff Road has it covered!

WHEN COURTNEY COLLINS’ PARTNER TOOK A JOB RUNNING THE NGUKURR ARTS CENTRE, she moved from Victoria to the remote community. Collins had the bones of a second novel but, despite being around 300 kilometres from the nearest town (Katherine), Collins found she still needed to find the time and isolation necessary to write. The NT Writers’ Center’s Sally Bothroyd caught up with Collins to talk about living and writing in Ngukurr.

“I moved to Ngukurr about 18 months ago, and pretty quickly I became enmeshed in the community and community life.

Part of that is because we live in the arts centre and it’s such a hub of activity. It’s not like we go home at the end of the day and have that work-life balance. You do need a place to retreat to and know that you have a stretch of time that won’t be interrupted,” said Collins.

Collins managed to find a routine that worked in with community life, and her second novel The Walkman Mix is now nearing completion.

“We have a rhythm there in that we get up early so we have some time to ourselves. By eight in the morning, people start arriving and I’m at my desk pretty soon after that. I write in the morning, and

then I often prepare the lunch for the artists lunch program. After that I retreat into my re-purposed shipping container and write more.

It works really well. If I need a chat I just go next door. There’s always someone happy to have a cup of tea. It’s quite a secure feeling because my previous experience had been of writing a novel in isolation.”

Collins said the Western concept of “writing a novel” is not easily translated to the community’s residents, but she wasn’t complaining too much about that.

“Writing a novel is totally meaningless to them. One of the freedoms of being in Ngukurr is that really, at the end of the day, I’m judged by how good the lunch was, and whether there was enough meat in it. This project I’m cooking up in the shipping container, no one’s concerned about it except me.”

Collins’ first novel The Burial was published by Allen & Unwin in 2012.

It’s since been published in the UK, the US and France and has been shortlisted for numerous prizes in Australia and overseas, including the Australian Vogel, the NSW Premier’s Award and the Stella Award.

NESTLED IN PARAP, THE NORTHERN CENTRE FOR CONTEMPORARY ART (NCCA) IS A SHINING LIGHT IN THE AUSTRALIAN CONTEMPORARY ART SCENE. NCCA’S DIRECTOR Maurice O’Riordan took some time to chat to Off The Leash about the work of this vital Territory institution.

When was NCCA established?

The gallery official opened its doors on April Fool's day 1990 but a lobby group to form the gallery originated the year before.

What is the vision and core values of NCCA? To develop and present highcalibre contemporary art exhibitions which cultivate NT talent and contribute to regional and national dialogue, especially critical dialogue, and I think NCCA's vision and core values have remained consistent with this over the past 25-plus years. The name change from 24hr Art to NCCA in 2013 emphasises our regional outlook, the fact that we are based in Australia's northernmost capital and looking north to Southeast Asia rather than blindly mimicking the south.

How many artists and regions have had their work showcased?

Wow, it would be good to know the exact number of artists – one day I'll work it out, but definitely in the thousands. Our reach within the region has been quite strong with international representation mostly focused on Southeast Asia;

domestically, we prioritise our own region (the NT and Top End more broadly) but aim for a fairly equitable national representation as well.

How do you develop your program each year?

It's a combination of proposals from artists and curators and projects that we initiate in-house.

We generally work six months to a year in advance but we also like to be responsive to immediate events/issues and our public programs can also function more organically in this way.

What sets NCCA apart?

We're the only independent public gallery in the NT dedicated to contemporary art; our unique location and demographic and the way that we embrace and interpret this, is also one of our key distinctions.

What's coming up for NCCA in 2017?

Well, hopefully some more funding certainty – it's certainly a much trickier business running a gallery and planning a program without enough multiyear funding.

Program wise, Artmart 2017 – our annual feast of mostly local/NT talent – is our next cab off the ranks and our Darwin Festival offering this year will be sure to get tongues wagging, a portrait and painting based show with Therese Ritchie (Darwin) and Jacky Green (Borroloola) on Aboriginal sovereignty in the face of open cut mining.

How would you describe your sound to someone who’s never heard it before?

I’d probably describe it as a bit of a blend of blues, reggae and soul all wrapped into one.

Where do you draw inspiration?

It comes when it comes – I like to keep my mind free and open. There are a lot of things that influence the music I’m playing, like how I feel. If I’m happy or sad about something happening in the world or something close to me, I’ll play and try to get things out – but I guess that pretty much goes for all musicians!

You’ve performed at a bunch of events, including Barunga and Darwin Festivals, and supported a host of notable acts including Tex Perkins and The Cat Empire – is there a particular gig that’s stood out for you?

Yes. I played Raining on the Rock with Warren H Williams at the 45th Anniversary of the Gurindji Walk Off in Kalkaringi. It was amazing to be on stage – in the bush and the desert – playing alongside a music legend on his home turf. That one was a real highlight for me.

At the Dakota ‘Arrow Holder’

LOCAL BAND AT THE DAKOTA HAVE COME OUT WITH A BRAND NEW SINGLE THAT IS SET TO LIGHT UP DANCE FLOORS IN DARWIN AND ACROSS THE COUNTRY. ‘Arrow Holder’ is a punchy track that stays in line with group’s pop-rock sensibilities, with some great production elements and very catchy hooks.

The single release was accompanied with a light-hearted music video, which involves chasing a buffalo around the NT bushland. It’s fun, a little tongue in cheek and connects with the band’s Territory roots.

‘Arrow Holder’ is a solid indie pop dance track, which further cements the much-loved locals as one of the most exciting acts around. The lyrics are relatively vague but it is the infectious rhythm and energetic riffs that really carry the song.

This latest move follows a pretty successful year for At The Dakota, with the debut of their single ‘Rat King City’ and playing BASSINTHEGRASS Festival as the people’s local choice. They will be backing this up with some interstate gigs, including Nannup Music Festival in WA and a single launch party at Four5Nine in Perth.

They’re definitely an NT band to keep an eye on and if ‘Arrow Holder’ is anything to go by, we can all look forward to the release of their EP Melt in April this year.

David Spry You regularly perform at Indigenous festivals and events – has your Aboriginal heritage influenced any aspects of your music?

It definitely influences where I choose to play. It’s a good opportunity to share the music I love, with the people I love because my music isn’t pinpointed to a particular audience, it’s broad and caters to a wide range. There are some elements of Indigenous sounds in some of my music, but I also think it’s important to choose the music you want to play, regardless of your background.

Has living in the Northern Territory had an influence on your creativity?

Very much so! The Territory has such a skilled number of musicians for such a small population base and that’s always good creatively. Maybe Darwin's hot weather and isolation is the perfect balance for writing tunes...

What’s next on the cards for David Spry?

There are a few things coming up this year. I’m currently working on an EP and touring the country. I recently played at St Kilda and Mount Eliza Music Festivals, and will be playing at the Macedon Ranges Music Festival, Moomba Festival and National Folk Festival in Canberra. I have been fortunate enough to be able to travel and take music to new audiences.

Artistic Director and Chief Conductor Matthew Wood has put together a program that explores iconic composers, features some of Australia’s leading soloists, celebrates our iconic Territory landscape and continues to deliver on the DSO’s commitment to providing vibrant and engaging performances for the community.

Following the realease of their 2017 program, Off The Leash caught up with Wood to chat about what audiences can expect from the year ahead.

What are you most looking forward to with the DSO in 2017?

Everything! This year we continue our dedication and commitment to being an orchestra of and for the community by bringing you a rich and diverse season of indoor and outdoor performances filled with

a veritable treasure trove of music ranging from operatic opulence to rock royalty.

How is this year's program different to others?

In many ways we are building on the tremendous success of previous years – continuing our much-loved association with ConocoPhillips in our annual rock-orchestral concert at the Botanic Garden’s Amphitheatre and our annual Opera Gala at the Darwin Waterfront. We also head into the fourth year of our extremely successful MasterSeries concerts at the Darwin Convention Centre – we are confident that this year will not disappoint.

How do you feel about the DSO audiences in Darwin? Do you get a wide range of people attending concerts?

The DSO has had 27 years of developing a fantastic relationship with its audiences. It has achieved this by being an orchestra of and for all the people of Darwin and the Territory as a whole, through regional touring and accessible, relevant

and quality programing. I love our audiences – who generally are very open and willing to give anything a chance.

You have a very diverse line up of concerts this year, why is that?

We really strive to reach all of our community and to share our love and passion of symphonic music with everyone. Therefore our programs should be diverse. This year we have opera, symphonic, rock, Australian composers, Chinese composers, Western composers, world class and renowned singers and instrumentalists and a new education series called Kids’ Classics that will be run by our new Concertmaster and Education and Outreach Officer Monica Naselow.

We perform indoors and we perform outdoors. There is something for everyone.

As someone who has conducted and worked with orchestras both here and overseas, what do you think is unique about Darwin?

On the one hand we are situated in an environment with many

thousands of years of history and culture, on the other we are a developing city still in its infancy.

Our landscape is extremely unique and alongside that comes some pretty unique experiences. For example, we recently became the first symphony orchestra to perform at Uluru. A tour of this magnitude naturally comes with considerable logistical and financial implications; however the ‘can do’ attitude of the Territory assists us in finding ways to do many things that seem unreachable for what is essentially a small and resourcefully challenged organisation. This was even more recently demonstrated with our tour to North-East Arnhem land where we performed Bizet’s Pearlfishers at Gulkala – a profoundly sacred place for the Yolngu people and the space where the Garma Festival is held each year. Here we collaborated with local musicians, translated the opera synopsis into Yolgnu and ran a fourday education program designed to break down cultural boundaries and develop a two-way dialogue of learning and appreciation. What an extraordinary thing to do!

Violent Femmes AMERICAN ROCK BAND THE VIOLENT FEMMES ARE RETURNING TO AUSTRALIA FOR THEIR MOST EXTENSIVE NATIONAL TOUR SINCE 2005. On the back of their recently released album We Can Do Anything, this veteran rock group will be taking centre stage at the Darwin Entertainment Centre this March. Although they have released nine studio albums and 15 singles throughout their career, most punters will recognise them for their hits ‘Blister In The Sun’ and ‘Gone Daddy Gone’. These well-known tracks still get frequent air time, even 34 years after the release of their self-titled debut album.

Although the group has had their ups and downs over the years, splitting up briefly in 1987 and again in 2009, the last few years have seen them reunite for Coachella, Falls Festival and Woodford. This culminated in the

release of their ninth studio album in 2016, the first since 2000’s Freak Magnet.

Their foray to Darwin also follows the post-punk rockers' appearance on the line up of some wellknown festivals around the country including Golden Plains, WOMADelaide and Twilight at Taronga. This latest tour sees them take the road less travelled, visiting more regional and suburban areas across Australia.

Local Indigenous father daughter duo Rayella will be supporting on the night, after meeting Violent Femmes bass player Brian Ritchie in Alice Springs in 2014. Although it might be hard for the group to cover all their extensive discography in just one night, it's safe to say they will definitely cover most of the classics for their fans.

NEARLY 40 YEARS AFTER THEY ENCOURAGED FANS TO ‘TAKE IT GREASY’, OL’55 ARE REUNITING for a special performance in Darwin.

Admirers of 1950s rock’n’roll are in for a treat, with this well-known Aussie group covering some of the era’s classic tunes.

Frankie J Holden was an accountant before becoming the front man for the group – a move that would see him perform at some of the biggest live venues in Australia. Holden, who grew up in Darwin, later went on to have a television career in the 80s and 90s.

Although their style has sometimes been referred to as parody or as a novelty throwback to days gone by, this group has proven their music mettle time and time again. Along with their retro kitsch and theatrics also comes decades of experience as musicians and performers.

Having made their mark in the music industry in the 1970s and 80s with chart-topping releases like ‘On The Prowl’ and ‘Looking For An Echo’, Ol’55 are bringing back the original line up of Frankie J Holden, Wilbur Wilde, Jimmy Manzie, Rockpile Jones and Patrick Drummond for this oneoff show in the Top End.

Saxophonist Nicholas Aitken, who found fame with the moniker Wilbur Wilde, joined Holden. Ol’55 also features Jimmy Manzie on keyboards and bass guitar and Patrick "Meatballs" Drummond on guitar and vocals. The group took their name from a Tom Waits track, which was later covered by the Eagles.

DARWIN WAS INDISPUTABLY CHANGED BY WORLD WAR II. ALTHOUGH THOSE EVENTS may have taken place well over 50 years ago, it is important to reflect on the consequences and sacrifices made during that time. As a part of the Territory Remembers and 75th anniversary of the Bombing of Darwin commemorations, the Darwin Chorale performs a meaningful and reconciliatory piece titled Pacific Requiem. Composed by Australian Michael McNiell and conducted by Darwin Chorale's Michael Loughlin, Pacific Requiem blends the text and music of Latin Mass with folk and children’s music of cultures that

Requiem were involved in World War II in the Pacific region. This includes music spanning Australia, Japan and the USA.

and Iwo Jima and how he made peace with his former foes but was psychologically scarred for many years following the end of the war.

Written in 2014, the work had its world premiere in New Orleans last year, performed by three massed choirs at St Louis Cathedral. Pacific Requiem was created to heal the wounds of those who fought during this time and, as the composer has described, to ‘trigger that which binds us, our shared common humanity’. The work hit close to home for McNiell and was partly inspired by his father’s experience as a US Marine in Guadalcanal

This will be the first time this piece has been performed in Australia and is presented in dedication of the Memorial Reflection Pool in the Japanese Peace Garden at the Darwin Memorial Uniting Church. More than 50 singers will lead the performance, accompanied by a string ensemble and a children’s choir.
