When Mt. Agung erupted in Bali in 2017, a silver lining came in the form of the silver screen. A relationship directly resulted between the Northern Territory’s film industry with that of our international neighbours, Indonesia, for the Darwin International Film Festival (DIFF).

This idea of connecting with our international neighbours has also extended to Singapore for this year’s DIFF – check out the main feature to see how it went down.

The Malak Marketplace crew are running a trial pop-up at the George Brown Botanic Gardens this month. With live music from local musicians and cold brews from One Mile Brewery, this is one Friday night knockoff you don’t want to miss. If all goes well, they’ll bring it back on the regular in 2020. This is my jam, so I'll see you there!

e have Mother Nature to thank for the Festival’s increase in films from our closest international neighbours over the past two years.

Mount Agung, a volcano on the island of Bali in Indonesia, erupted five times November 2017; its ash sent billowing to the skies, disrupting air travel and stranding thousands of visitors. Two of those visitors were DIFF Manager Blandine Ruffo and former Deckchair Cinema General Manager Alice Body, their plans to continue to Darwin and Central America respectively thwarted by the burning mountain.

But in true Territorian style, they made the best of a heated situation, island hopping from Bali to Java to attend the Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival.

“Alice and I drove across Bali and caught a boat to Java to escape the closed airport – we were stuck in Bali and there was no sign of it reopening. Alice sent an email to the film festival in Jakarta explaining our situation and that she also manages a film festival in Darwin, so they invited us both along,” Ruffo says.

The benefits of last year’s trip to SGIFF can be seen on the big screen.

“I’m so excited about one of the feature films, a mystery drama called Long Day’s Journey Into Night – when I saw it, it really blew my mind. It’s also the first 3D film we’re showing at DIFF, with screenings at BCC Casuarina. It’s really one of the most amazing films, I can’t recommend it enough.”

And the handpicked international flavour doesn’t stop there, with an entire short film program dedicated to showcasing South-east Asia.

“Our short program, Best of South-east Asia, includes lots of films that were screened in Singapore and also from our time in Indonesia. These short films are amazing, and we really wanted to share them in the 2019 festival.”

In true DIFF fashion, opportunities to celebrate, showcase and cater for Northern Territory filmmakers are sprinkled throughout the program. Check out The Best of Territory Shorts to see seven short NT films light up the Deckie screen.

After realising the success of this accidental international expedition, Ruffo ventured to Singapore to further expand DIFF’s international film network.

Spark returns for a third year – a joint film initiative between DIFF and Screen Territory – expanding from Darwin to the rest of the NT, unearthing emerging filmmakers from Alice Springs to the Top End and everywhere in between. There’s also the introduction of Youth DIFF with a range of film screenings, and fun workshops facilitated by the talented folk at Corrugated Iron Youth Arts.

“We realised how worthwhile it was to do it. Last year I went to the Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) with Neil Ludvigsen, one of our DIFF programmers, and it was amazing.

Other activities and opportunities include the NT Screen Summit, the new Water Screen and, for the first time, industry passes for those in the local film industry to be able to engage with as much of the festival as possible.

“We want to continue to reach out internationally to our neighbours close-by. It’s really important for the health and development of DIFF to have those connections and relationships with other festivals around us, and to have that professional network – we can uphold our standards and

The Art of Therapy ART THERAPY OFFERS PEOPLE a chance to express themselves visually, rather than dig for words at times they are hard to find.

Top End professionals have the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of art therapy for their professional practice or artistic career.

The nine-day course, held in threeday blocks over October, November and December, will look at how different artistic mediums can elicit different responses from clients.

Janine Brophy-Dixon has spent three decades workings as an artist, therapist, counsellor, teacher and researcher, and will be in Darwin sharing her knowledge with her course Foundations of Art Therapy.

“Art Therapy is a way of helping people reflect on themselves, their thoughts, behaviours and ideas in a different way – in a visual way – rather than talk therapy,” she says.

“It helps students or clients who

“Some exercises require deep cognitive planning and some are more in to the sensory or kinetic response.”

Brophy-Dixon says the course is perfect for professionals from

“No art making experience is required or necessary. The course is good for social workers, counsellors, youth workers, nurses, carers, community arts workers – anyone working in the helping profession,” she says.

“We occasionally have an artist do it and say it has shifted their art making, so we wouldn’t say no to someone doing it for those reasons either!”

MALAK MARKETPLACE IS stepping out of the ‘burbs and coming to the George Brown Botanic Gardens.

Market Co-Founder Lina Paselli-Kruse says it was a shared vision to bring the organic market to the tropical gardens in the city.

“The team at the Botanical Gardens have been wanting us there for quite a while because we share a lot of similarities in our values, being plastic free and eco friendly with our market choices,” she says.

“It seemed like a match made in heaven! So we’re running a

trial this month and potentially we’ll be there on a regular basis in 2020.”

The initial trial will be a pop-up version of the weekly market, with Malak Marketplace’s top food stalls, live music, and new kids on the block thanks to a new partnership with One Mile Brewery.

“We wanted to make it different to our regular Saturday, so it’s got more of an after work Friday vibe,” Paselli-Kruse says.

“Hopefully it’ll also be a good teaser for all the new people

who have never been to Malak Marketplace.”

Grab the family – whether blood-relatives or work fam – and chill out with local organic produce washed down by a cold locally-brewed beer.

And don’t forget the market is at its regular home in Malak every Saturday night until the end of October.

On a balmy Dry season afternoon, friends and local produce enthusiasts gathered at a long outdoor table in suburban Darwin, laden with fresh red tomatoes, basil, dill, parsley, cucumbers, a bowlful of peppery rocket, a large watermelon, and yellow zucchini flowers. with Mary Anne Butler The first two thirds of the book deal with the complicated background and relationships of Nicefero and those involved with his murder, as well as the sometimes-farcical investigation into his death.

STEVEN SCHUBERT’S MANDATORY MURDER examines in great detail the scenario which led to the 2011 murder of Ray Nicefero down the track in Katherine. The former ABC Katherine reporter, now based in Alice Springs, systematically separates fact from rumour and highlights supposition with the careful ease of a practiced journalist.

What’s interesting is that, despite well-researched details on the facts of the case, the book actually raises more questions than it answers.

How have young men become so naïve and removed from society that they don’t even recognise they’re part of a conspiracy to murder? How do we tackle domestic abuse in remote areas of the NT? Is it possible to bridge the significant

social divides in outback communities? All these issues lie at the heart of Ray Nicefero’s murder.

The second part of the book deals primarily with the trial of Zak Grieve, who is currently serving the longest sentence, despite [most likely] not being present for the actual murder. Whether you believe him to be gullibly innocent or as guilty as those who physically carried out the act, his lengthy time behind bars raises important questions about mandatory sentencing laws in the NT, and across Australia. Ultimately, it is his story that makes this book relevant and a necessary read.

“We’re so excited to have award-winning playwright MaryAnne Butler on board, and for her to be facilitating the workshop in a space that’s not typical for that sort of thing. But this is the first part,” she says.

“We’re hoping the participants are inspired by the unique historical setting, with the aim to produce a piece of writing to be performed at an evening event held in the Gaol on Halloween. The cells are small and there are quite a few of them, so we think the format could work with ticket holders enjoying one intimate performance, having a break to grab a drink, before another performance in the next cell.”

in Larrimah IF THE DISTRACTIONS of the big city aren’t helping your writing project, the Andrew McMillan Emerging Writer’s Residency is your chance to hit the track for some peace and writing time in Larrimah.

The annual residency offers two weeks of food and accommodation at the iconic Larrimah Hotel, about 500 clicks from Darwin, between October 2019 and Feb 2020, for one lucky writer.

Last year’s residency recipient Kaye Aldenhoven had a chat with us about her writing and her time in Larrimah.

Tell us a bit about yourself as a writer and what motivates you to put pen to paper?

I grew up with five adults who read, wrote, drew, and illustrated every afternoon. At 10-years-old I set the goal of reading four books a week. I started my lifelong habit of reading two books concurrently. Emotions and memories motivate me to write.

I was a closet writer for 30 years.

Why did you apply for this residency?

I wanted to write about my family’s time on Groote. I wanted to step into Andrew McMillan’s shoes. He was close to me at Larrimah. When I was not writing, I read bits of Andrew’s Strict Rules – the Groote Eylandt section.

What did you get out of your experience down there?

An opportunity to advance my memoir. A space with less mundane distractions, and a realisation the distractions were in my head, not my kitchen. On the tangible side?

30,000 words.

Most interesting part about writing from Larrimah?

Most amusing? Cockies that talked to me as I ate lunch. Most terrifying?

Strength of the big black crocodile’s leap for his lump of flesh – not my flesh, thank God. Most beautiful?

The bush, morning and sunset time, so beautiful and different from both desert and monsoon vegetation.

All these Larrimah aspects featured in my writing – I enjoyed writing the blog.

Any advice for the next person who does the retreat?

Make the most of a brilliant opportunity to work “in the middle of everywhere.”

Top writing tips?

Make writing your habit. Never throw anything out. Write what must not be forgotten. Be brave!

Reading Revolt the world. It’s a strong feminist play.

I enjoyed the humour in it as much as the fury.

AUDIENCES CAN SEE a fierce and humourous feminist play for September’s instalment of Brown’s Mart Theatre’s Evening Reads.

Award-winning play Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again. by Alice Birch examines the language, behaviours and forces that shape women in the 21st century, and asks what’s stopping us from doing something truly radical to change them.

Director Nicky Fearn says she was drawn to several elements of the play.

“It’s not a standard play. It explores form quite a bit and (Birch) examines the status of women in

“A lot of elements drew me in – the comedy and the fact it’s quite challenging. She doesn’t give characters in every scene, so the director and the creative team have a lot of freedom in terms of how to present the piece, though we’re doing the most simplified version as a play reading.”

This year, Brown’s Mart began Evenings Reads@7.30 to develop local artists’ directing and acting skills, by creating a space to present work to live audiences, in a casual atmosphere with minimal production elements. “[The play readings are] really exciting because there’s less pressure to do a whole production and get money to get it off the ground – it’s like giving birth to get a production up,” Fearn says.

“Play readings are cheap and simple, and allow the community

to explore really varied works – we can do anything – works with lots of people and experimental ones like this one.”

Fearn says the benefits of the monthly readings extend well beyond the performance opportunities, as it encourages artists to have their finger on the pulse of the international scene.

“It’s really important because it encourages all freelance artists and the community to look and what works are around us, and allows us to think about them and present them to audiences,” she says.

The play is set in America in 1947.

Despite hard choices and even harder knocks, Joe and Kate Keller are a success story. They have built a home, raised two sons and established a thriving business.

“It keeps Darwin and our artists much more up to date with what’s happening around the globe and is a great way to have the work exposed. It’s really accessible.”

CO-FOUNDER OF THIS YEAR’S INAUGURAL Deadly Darwin Comedy show Richard Fejo is a familiar face around town, popping up on stages left, right and centre – but comedy happened to him rather by surprise. Will Crawford caught up with him for a chat.

Comedy came to you later on in life – how did you get into it?

It was an accident! I went to karaoke on the wrong night…

I ended up walking into a comedy show by mistake, and I was amazed to see two guys get up on stage for the first time to tell jokes. So a week later, I went back to perform and now I’m addicted.

You co-founded Deadly Darwin Comedy – how did it come about?

In 2018, my sketch Deadly Brother – The Newsreader won the 2018 Darwin Deadly Funny competition, and I was flown to Melbourne to compete in the national Deadly Funny final. Although I didn’t win, I met many awesome Aboriginal comedians from all around Australia.

When I got back to Darwin we created Deadly Darwin, which currently includes Mr. Normie Grogan, Mr. Micah Kickett and myself. It’s been an amazing success and a chance for us to develop and explore new ways to express

Heating the Streets My older brother skates and he bet I couldn’t do an ollie. I obviously couldn’t, but that got me hooked.

If that was the hook, what keeps you going back?

I like how free skating is. No one is telling you what to do you, you can do what you feel like, and there’s always room for improvement.

THE ANNUAL STREET HEAT competition is just around the corner, and skaters are shredding up the parks getting ready for their chance at bragging rights and prizes.

Off The Leash caught up with Jingili Skate Park regular Lindsay Balaam (14) about all things skate.

Thanks for the chat, mate – first up, how long have you been skating?

Three and a half years.

Street Heat is coming up – how many times have you competed in the past?

This will be my fourth time.

Now’s your chance to brag – ever made it to the podium?

I won it once – and came third another time.

What does it take to win?

You just need to do your run well, or land the best trick. You just need a lot of luck (laughs).

It’s a lot of fun. There’s lots of nice people and you’ll see some crazy skating. It’s good vibes. Heaps of people come, even non-skaters rock up just to watch. It’s really cool.

Skating will be part of the next Olympics – have you got your sights set that high?

I don’t think it’s achievable for me but I’m excited to watch it. Some people like those drama shows, but that doesn’t appeal to me, I like watching competitions.

Is that so you can get some ideas for tricks to try yourself?

There’s some I can work towards. I can downgrade their trick and try to do it on a smaller scale. Like, if they flip in to a trick, I can try to do a regular ollie in to it.

DID YOU KNOW that there are 3,000 first language speakers of Warlpiri? It’s one of the largest Aboriginal languages spoken in Australia. To find out more about Warlpiri, Emily Ford had a chat with Nicholas Rennie, a Wantapari man and speaker of Warlpiri.

Originally from Ali Curung, a community of about 450 people 400km north of Alice Springs, Nicholas now resides in Darwin and says language keeps him connected to his roots.

“It’s important for young people and children to keep language and

Alekarenge School is spelt correctly, whereas Ali Curung, the name of the community, is not. A lot of Aboriginal words sometimes have a few different spellings. This is because standard spelling rules for Aboriginal languages didn’t exist until the 20th century. Before that, non-Indigenous people were writing down their best guesses that often didn’t accurately represent how the words sounded.

Warlpiri has a dictionary with loads of words and example sentences

Emily Tyaemaen Ford is a Rak Mak Mak Marranunggu woman from Kurrindju, who speaks two languages Rak Mak Mak Marranunggu and Rak Marrithiyel. She is on the City of Darwin Youth Advisory Committee and works in Indigenous research at Northern Institue.

Don’t go too rouge though – the judges will be looking for accuracy and knowledge of the character you’re portraying and craftsmanship.

We caught up with producer Shanae Kuo to find out why the last gig of the year is one not to miss.

There’s no secrets here – tell us everything we need to know for S@S #5?

It’s an all-female line-up with Aisha Hayashi, Helen and Grace, and Emma Roe. Emma is also bringing a special surprise guest with her.

Okay, so maybe there are some secrets. We hear there’s also going to be some furry friends down there?

I saw lots of people come down to the other events with their dogs so I wanted to make this one animal themed. People can bring their dogs down, and the RSPCA and Top End Rehoming will bring down rescue dogs for people to meet. I’m trying to help the pooches that are in shelters as well.

Sounds@Sunset is all about giving young Darwinites more skills – what have you learned as part of the program?

The main thing I’ve learnt is that communication is the key for getting things done. I’ve also learned there are very few venues out there for young people to perform in, and I’m trying to work on that with some other programs I’m involved with, too.

Tell us more!

Before I joined Launch I ran Casuarina’s busking program and have a bunch of musicians I’m connected with that I help book gigs. Red Moon Music are teaming up with places like Nirvana and Deck Bar and raising money for charities. It helps upcoming musicians get out of their comfort zones and perform in a bar setting.

30 Years of the Nitmiluk Handback PACK A BAG AND MAKE THE TRIP to Katherine for the inaugural Nitmiluk Festival, an event created to celebrate 30 years since Nitmiluk National Park was handed back to Jawoyn traditional owners.

The 10-day celebration marks the important historical milestone with an enticing program of events including art, music, markets, family fun, and gourmet food and wine experiences.

Jawoyn board chairperson Lisa Mumbin says it’s important to honour the anniversary, to celebrate the combined achievements of the 30-year collaboration between the Northern Territory Government and the Jawoyn traditional owners.

“This year on 10 September, Jawoyn people celebrate a milestone in their modern history – 30 years

since we were recognised as the traditional owners of Nitmiluk. The anniversary and Jawoyn’s partnership with the Northern Territory Government offers a significant occasion for all our community to reflect on the great successes we’ve had together,” she says.

when I was researching a story with two Jawoyn elders who were storytellers at Barunga Festival. It lead to being invited to cover the 20th anniversary of the Nitmiluk handback, then on to cover the discovery of rock art on Jawoyn country,” she says.

“It’s a celebration of what can be achieved through collaboration and reconciliation. In this spirit, groups and organisations from across the Katherine region have united to create a festival that celebrates Nitmiluk, our region and community.”

“I developed a special relationship with the traditional owner of that place and we went on quite an adventure together. She passed last year and I miss her. I wish she were here for this year’s celebration. She was one of the last fluent Jawoyn speakers on the planet.

Festival organising committee member Emma Masters has worked in the region for many years, developing a special connection to its people and place.

Held at Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Art and Culture Centre, Sharing Country is an exhibition to showcase Jawoyn culture, history and land, observing the Jawoyn people’s fight for recognition and the hand back of Nitmiluk through collaboration and reconciliation.

Concert on the Gorge is a unique chance to experience the world-famous Katherine Gorge as never before. Feast on a bush-food inspired picnic-style meal as you’re treated to the sounds of the Australian Army Band Darwin and the local children’s Canterbillay Choir – all under the stars. Leliyn Family Fun Day is the perfect chance to get the family together for a day of, well fun! The inaugural Nitmiluk Festival is fun for eveyone, yes, but more importantly it marks a time in Australia’s history when the nation began to recognise more than 60,000 years of Indigenous people’s living spiritual and cultural connection to country. That’s certainly something to celebrate.

ART THE WALLS THE DARWIN STREET ART FESTIVAL (DSAF) is back with some of the biggest names yet. There’s even a street party in West Lane for everyone to help celebrate.

Local street art legend and the man behind the festival, David Collins, had a yarn about what’s on the cards this year.

DSAF’s got some big names this year, including Sofles, Vexx and Odeith. Is Darwin now on the map for world-class street artists?

Yeah, definitely. There are interna-

tional and national artists who are seeing who we’ve worked with over the last few years, and word travels among the street art community that Darwin is a good place to visit and work.

You’re almost a born and bred Darwin artist – what’s it like for you to share Darwin with these heavy-hitters in the scene?

It’s great. It’s been cool to ring someone up that I’ve admired my whole life and find out they’ve heard about me and the work I do up here. It’s also exiting taking

visitors around and showing them local eats and the parts of Darwin that I love.

Was that part of the motivation of getting the festival going, to share Darwin with more people?

A part of me wanted to start DSAF in Darwin for the people of Darwin first, so we could have world-class art free in our streets. The other side was so bring these artists here and show off the town that I love and that I grew up in.

Neon Has the festival had a broader

impact on tourism, too?

I probably didn’t realise the impact of the tourism benefits. When tourists come here to see Kakadu and Litchfield, I didn’t really think about what they do when they’re waiting in between tours in town and how popular the street art walks would be.

I challenge anyone to stand in West Land or Austin lane for more than 20 minutes in the middle of the day and not see someone stop in their tracks or take a photo!

WAGAIT BEACH’S ANNUAL ART EXHIBITION has stepped it up a notch this year, with the introduction of the Wagait Art Prize at the reinvigorated Wagait Art Festival.

“During the day, there’ll be craft stalls and food, and a series of workshops on professional development for artists, and other workshops for the general public.”

The theme for the 2019 festival is The Elements. Festival Coordinator Tracey Bunn says creativity has been bubbling and growing for years since the Wagait Arts Group began in 2013.

The Wagait Art Prize comes with some perks… That’s right baby, cash dollars – but only if you can impress judges Paul Johnstone and David Collins.

“The festival is a result of the annual Wagait Arts exhibition, which started in 2013 as a celebration of artists, now offering a great selection of music and stalls.

This year, we’ve put more into the festival format and have some great entertainment – a couple of bands and some comedians," Bunn says.

The first prize in the Open Section, for all Northern Territory artists, is $1000. The second category open to Cox Peninsula artists has $500 up for grabs for the winner, and young people can earn $200 for the top prize.

“The art prize is a way to encourage artists to push themselves,” Bunn says.

“We’re working towards making it a prestigious event for our artists, but we don’t want it to be a snobby art prize – we want it to be inclusive, so we’re encouraging everyone to participate.”

“It’s open to all mediums and skill levels – there’s no delineation between amateur and professional – if you’ve got passion and you’re an artist, then you should definitely enter.”

Kaff-eine’s Infinite Thanks with artist Kaff-eine

IT’S PRETTY RARE for national artistic projects to start in Darwin.

Which is precisely why artist Kaffeine is so keen to see her travelling project, Infinite Thanks, come to life in the Top End. The artist is inviting the LGBTQIA+ community and its allies to come forward to share their stories and pick up a paintbrush for the project, as part of her residency at Mayfair Gallery.

Kaff-eine offers a series of casual workshops this month, where she’ll support LGBTQIA+ Territorian adults of all creative abilities to share their stories and paint their own ex votos to their own divine beings, for the exhibition.

The first leg of the exhibition will coincide with the Pride Festival and Mayfair’s annual Gayfair celebration, before heading to Melbourne in February. She hopes to get funding to see the exhibition grow and tour to remote and regional areas.

“Australia isn’t just Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, and the further you get away from the capital cities the more challenging it can be for rainbow people, especially younger people. It’s about making something and sharing it with Australia. It’s a nice way for people from different parts of Australia to connect.”

Symbiosis HUMANS AREN’T TOO DIFFERENT from our floral friends. Artist Dawn Beasley has taken a subtle and delicate look at one of the main similarities between plant and human in her exhibition, Symbiosis.

“When I started, my focus was on generally exploring creation – birth, growth, life, death and regeneration.

But the more I got into it, and studied the biology behind the shapes, I realised just how similar

plant and human reproductive organs actually are,” she says.

“So over the year it’s taken me to complete this body of work, the pieces have sort of morphed from strictly botanical representations to more human like forms. It became a ‘symbiosis’ of ideas where the two elements, botanical and human, worked together.”

The exhibition features intricate

pink and white porcelain sculptures, inspired by seedpods, flowers, coral, lichen and fungi, with nothing too obviously naughty…

“It’s not R-rated, but yes, there is a strong phallic vibe to fungus and the male inner part of flowers, and vulvic one to petals and seedpods too,” Beasley says.

FORMATION Bringing together recent artworks

by Henry and Fernanda Dupal, this exhibition celebrates creative endeavour in partnership. Form and function, and colour and light are some of the considerations driving the artistic practice of these two Darwin artists. Henry works in ceramics, with wheel-thrown vessels and high-fire crystalline glazes, and Fernanda creates works on paper exploring multiple photographic and printmaking processes.

Marra Country - The Art of Ngukurr Ngukurr artists held their first formal exhibition in 1988 and defied preconceptions of Aboriginal painting. Spontaneous and employing bold colours such as green, pink and blue, the works quickly became identifiable to that region. This exhibition continues to employ the same colourful yet eclectic approach pioneered by a handful or significant artists over 30 years ago. It is a rich visual language with an ancient story.

Naminapu Maymuru-White: River of Stars In the past/present/future the Guwak ancestral beings led the Mangalili people to their new home at Djarrakpi (Cape Shield).

Having seen the people settled, the Guwak men sang their own journey, paddling out to sea along the Milŋiyawuy River where they were drowned by a huge tidal wave, to a place in the sky where they become stars which would shine out of the night sky. This River of Stars is the astral version of the Milŋiyawuy River and known in English as the Milky Way. As a multi-awarded artist she stands beside her siblings Baluka and Galuma Maymuru and their fathers Narritjin and Nanyin Maymuru as one of Australia’s first families of art.

John Prince Siddon has created new artefacts and works on tin to describe the sometimes brutal reality of the Dry season in the Kimberleys. These stories come out his own experience and his deep understanding of the fine balance of nature that could mean life or death.

Ngarralja Tommy May has produced this new work using contemporary materials to tell us about Warla country. Showing the viewer a transformation of the same place with the different seasons, “Same country but dry time, burnt country, flood time.”

Love Games

by Kath Borrow Kath Borrow’s solo exhibition at Mayfair Gallery features new artworks created in her Howard Springs studio. ROD MOSS: White Man You Are Surrounded

Mother and daughter team – Hilary the potter and Mandy the painter – have come together to celebrate 50 years of creating, by bringing their artistic mediums alongside each other in one space. After 50 years of potting, Hilary’s work represents a departure from her usual wheel-thrown work into sculptural, figurative forms. Mandy’s paintings track her artistic journey, informed by her experiences since arriving in the NT 13 years ago.

For over three decades, Rod Moss has chronicled the “parallel universes” as he puts it, of white and Aboriginal Australia in the central desert region around Alice Springs. His monumental figurative works capture indelibly both the vastness of the desert landscape and the eerie dissonance between the two cultures. Often drawing on images from old master paintings, these works are a questioning and poignant exploration of a cultural divide at the heart of the nation.

Cassar-Daley’s Jem roy Cassar-Daley has a bit of a love affair with the Territory – the landscapes, the people, and of course, the fishing.

The country music legend is excited to be hitting the Top End on his national Greatest Hits Tour, but one thing he’s most looking forward to is sharing the NT with his 18-year-old daughter, Jem, who is supporting him on the tour.

“Not many kids get to see the Northern Territory, that’s one of the main reasons I wanted to bring her up here. She’s certainly going to get to see places not many people to get have a squiz at.”

The acclaimed musician released his Greatest Hits compilation late last year and has been on the road since January with Jem, performing unique sets all over the country.

“I’ve got a set list of about 40 songs to choose from, so whatever people sing out on the night ends up being played. It’s not only great to have a different show each night, but it’s nice to work with the spontaneity of the crowd and let the people guide the show,” he says.

For this tour, every performance is being recorded, but Cassar-Daley isn’t quite sure what he’ll do with the audio just yet.

ROCK WITH CLARA THE CROC Having traded the red sand of Central Australia for the white tropical sand of the Top End, singer-songwriter Sally Balfour is no stranger to the Territory music scene, strumming her folky tunes across the NT since 2012.

– even the sound checks are recorded. Even if it’s just something to have for prosperity, isn’t it great to have a record of yourself and your daughter on the road? Maybe when she turns 30 and has a kid we’ll say, ‘hey remember that year we spent on the road together?’”

Cassar-Daley says the tour with Jem has been a bonding experience and a great opportunity to show her what his life is like.

“That’s the best part – her seeing it from the stage rather than being the little kid crying at the door as Dad packs up the guitar. That was always really hard.”

Now Balfour’s venturing into the wonderful world of children’s music, thanks to funding through the NT Arts Grants Program in the emerging artist category. We caught up with Balfour to chat about a little crocodile called Clara.

Firstly, congratulations on your new project! What inspired you to foray into children’s music?

Having kids was certainly a major push! I used work on the kids’ TV program Yamba’s Playtime in Alice Springs, which was one of my favourite jobs before I left to move to Darwin. After the birth of my first son, I had the idea of a crocodile and its journey through the NT, and always wanted to get back into children’s entertaining – it’s just so much fun.

Tell us about the album Clara Crocodile!

The album centres on the story of Clara the Crocodile. Clara is threatened with the prospect of being eaten by other crocodiles, but after being told about Alice Springs, a place where there are no crocodiles, she decides to make the journey from the Top End to the Red Centre.

On her journey from Darwin to Alice, she meets different characters who she makes friends with along the way. Each character is actually a different NT musician.

When I was writing the album I had different musicians in mind for the different characters. There’s an old rambling green tree frog played by Ted Egan, so I wanted his song to be a country-folk-travelling song with Ted singing and playing the Fosterphone (an empty beer

Were they keen to be on a children’s album?

Now that I think of it, they were all forthcoming. I originally applied for the funding a few years ago and planted the seed with some of them then, but this time I applied with a focus on Alice and the musicians there. Some of them I’ve known for years and had musical relationships with, and some are brand-new. They were all intrigued!

Clara sounds delightful – what’s she like?

She’s very adventurous and very kind. She’s actually a vegetarian crocodile and very easy to make friends with, with a big appetite for adventure. When I was first thinking about the character, I originally thought it would be a male – then I asked myself, “but why?”

I did a writing for children course and learnt children’s books generally come from a male perspective, so I thought it would be cool to have a female perspective.

All of the kids’ picture books at our place that feature a crocodile come from a male voice so that’s why I wanted a female. Clara translates to brilliant – so she’s a bright, friendly, vegetarian crocodile!

What do you hope this album does for Territory kids?

I hope Territory kids and families really embrace it as it is a uniquely Territorian story that is eclectic and doesn’t sound like The Wiggles!

I hope they enjoy the story, the different styles of music and the voices. And this is an NT story – most of the places sung about on the album are places they would have been to or heard of, and I think that’s really special.

When does the album come out and can we expect to see any live shows?

Both very good questions that I don’t currently have an answer for!

I’m hoping it’s out by the end of the year and would love to do some live performances. I’d like to present it to festivals so it’s just working out the logistics of the musicians and how it’ll look. Watch this space…

Catchya ‘round, Tapestry Yothu Yindi

DARWIN METAL BAND Tapestry formed in 2014 and put on their first show in March 2015. Now, after national tours and regular appearances on the festival circuit, the band is moving to Melbourne to up the ante with their music careers – but not before one mother of a farewell show…We caught up with bassist Connor Askham for the goss!

Tell us a bit about starting a band in Darwin?

If I was to break it down simply it’s kind of a blessing and a curse.

Being relatively isolated from the rest of the music scene in Australia and the world means we’ve developed our own unique culture here and have a sense of freedom to create. But trying to reach out for bigger opportunities can be a daunting experience.

What challenges has the band faced over the years?

First thing that comes to mind is driving 11,000kms around Australia

to play some shows. That was for our tour with Polaris last year – it was a huge opportunity for us to play so we couldn’t miss it, but in the past we have had to decline many tour and show offers due to the scale of travel we would have to undertake.

What are some of the highlights you’ve experienced here?

If you told 13-year-old me that I was going to play BASSINTHEGRASS (twice) when I grew up, I would’ve jumped out of my socks! Also selling out the Darwin Entertainment Centre, embarking on a number of national tours and now playing even bigger festivals – like Yours and Owls in October this year – is mind boggling stuff for some local Darwin lads!

Moving interstate to pursue music is a big, brave move – what opportunities are you hoping to come across?

You’re showcasing at BIGSOUND music conference in Brisbane later this month, what does this opportunity mean for you?

It’s exciting! I’m looking forward to meeting other people in the industry and watching other artists, but mostly the opportunity to be in a different space. I’ll be catching up with some old friends, too, who I used to go to high school with.

KATHERINE-BORN, DARWINBASED singer-songwriter Serina Pech has been captivating Territory audiences for the past few years with her enchanting voice and raw, honest lyrics. Now, she’s preparing to take her catchy folk sound to BIGSOUND – Australia’s largest music industry showcase.

You released Sing Your Own Song in June – can you tell us a little about it and the inspiration behind it?

Sing Your Own Song is about honouring the truth of ourselves and the paths of our own choosing, setting aside the paths that society and those close to us perceive to be better for us. It’s about making choices in alignment with our personal truths.

Music NT caught up with Serina ahead of her trip for a chat.

Aside from new music, opening for Greta Stanley at Darwin Festival

I think the opportunities we hoped would come from this mammoth move to Melbourne are already coming into fruition. Our year is quite booked out into next year, with tour and show offers. Our manager, Gabriel from Backbone Music Group, is doing a fantastic job in letting all his contacts know we are coming down and I think they’re just as keen as we are.

Will you take on other work while down south?

Yeah, we are all trying to find as much work as possible to support ourselves. Unfortunately the music industry isn’t a sustainable career for us yet, and we definitely need a side hustle or two to pay for all the music gear and travel costs. But that’s all part of the experience, too – I think we’re all keen to step out of the workforce in Darwin and see what’s going on down south.

Who knows, we might open a café in Brunswick!

Tell us about your farewell gig – what can your fans expect?

We are going all out on this one for yas… Massive sound, huge lights!

Since we’re always ducking off interstate, we thought we’d bring some of the interstaters up here

with our mates Wildheart (QLD) and Vacant Home (WA) making an appearance alongside local faves DraftDay and We Burn Bridges. It’s going to be a memorable night with all of our friends and family – there might be tears!

What will you miss most about life in the Top End? Taking 15 minutes to get anywhere in Darwin – traffic is pretty annoying in Melbourne. Our friends and family will be missed the most, but also the diverse culture and how close to nature we are here.

And lastly, if you become the next big thing, do you solemnly swear to always include the NT on your national touring circuit?

I think that’s a massive priority for us! We gotta smash out some shows down south first but coming back home is always on the cards.

There aren’t many Australian bands at our level of career that could regularly put Darwin on their touring map!

I would love to be writing for other people and do more things for film or TV eventually. I was recently synced for the re-vamp of Sea Change, which is cool. If you could collab with any other NT artist, who would it be?

I’m keen to collaborate with Phoebe Wear to make some chill soul, pop, RnB jams. We’ve been friends for a long time so that’s always a nice energy to be brought into the studio. What’s the first album you ever bought?

Weezer’s Blue Album. I went to the music shop in Casuarina and explained to the assistant who worked there that I didn’t know anything about cool music, and wanted her suggestions. Blue Album is what she gave me and I took it!

She had red contact lenses and couldn’t have been any cooler in my eyes, so I just knew that album would be good.

If you could see any artist or band – living or dead – this weekend, who would it be?

I saw Sufjan Stevens a few years ago and I would relive that entire show again if I had the chance. Everything was perfect – the lights on stage, his lyrics, his music. I actually had a little tear during one of his tunes, it was magnificent. I would also love to see Crowded House – preferably in a winery as the sun sets with a drink in my hands.

I wouldn’t say there is any one particular artist I would like to work with so long as the vibe is good – personality, interests, creative process, motivations, and fun...

We have to be having fun. I’m also always keen to meet more creative in other fields, especially visual fields like art, video and dance.

The best piece of advice I couldn’t give you, is advice you yourself already know to be true.

My mum worked at a video shop, so I had movie posters pinned to my ceiling at home. I had The Princess Bride – still one of the best movies ever made. (We tend to agree!)
