This year’s Eric Johnston Lecture will be delivered by Associate Professor Linda Payi Ford a proud Rak Mak Mak Marranunggu woman, local Territorian and a Principal Research Fellow at Charles Darwin University’s Northern Institute.

Speaking to her research and reflections on Aboriginal knowledge, languages and culture, the lecture will speak to the United Nation’s International Year of Indigenous Languages as well as the 2019 NAIDOC theme ‘Voice, Treaty, Truth’.

Hosted by Library & Archives NT, the Eric Johnston Lecture is an annual lecture that addresses a theme relating to the Territory’s culture, history and development. It was first delivered in 1986 by then Administrator Commodore Eric Johnston.

TAKSU Darwin has always had a strong relationship with Bali.

The Indonesian island is one of our closest international neighbours and a popular holiday destination for Top Enders. If you look beyond the beaches and cocktails in Kuta, you’ll find a rich culture with a wealth of traditional art reflecting Hindu stories and rituals. aksu: The Art of Bali – Recent Gifts To CDU Art Collection opens at Charles Darwin University (CDU) this month, taking a close look at the beauty and diversity of art from the island.

Taksu refers to divine inspiration. For many of the works in the show, they have been ‘infused’ with taksu, as they were created for ritualised activities.

Among the works are three paintings by the esteemed artist and healer, I Ketut Liyer. Liyer captured the world’s attention after Elizabeth Gilbert based a character on him in her novel Eat. Pray. Love. before his passing in 2016.

Other works include early 20th century sculptures, ceremonial textiles and painted temple cloths, performance masks and Wayang Kulit shadow puppets and paintings, which show the ties between Balinese ceremonial life and creativity.

THE ART OF BALI A unique highlight is a painting by I Dewa Putu Mokoh, Bom Boli, which is thought to be the only work by a Balinese artist that depicts the horror of the 2002 Bali Bombings.

Co-curator Kellie Joswig says the work is different to many in the show, as it’s uncommon for Balinese artists to depict contemporary scenes in their work.

“It’s believed to be quite a rare painting – perhaps the only painting – of the bombings, as represented by a Balinese artist. Artists on Bali tend to adhere more to the Hindu tradition of depicting scenes and episodes from the Indic epics Ramayana and Mahabarata, or nostalgic and serene village scenes,” she says.

For many Top Enders the style of art will be a familiar sight, but the opportunity to see these works up close is rare on home soil.

“Darwin audiences have a strong affinity with Bali and people will recognise the works and styles from their travels. The exhibition will give a really good insight to the culture of the Hindu Balinese,” Joswig says.

“There’s not clear provenance information for some of the pieces that were collected in the 1970s and 80s, but research suggests that sculptures and objects were traditionally often used in a ceremonial context, as receptacles for gods and deities.”

The CDU Art Collection of Balinese art, and the initial plans for this exhibition, began in 2016 when the family of the late Christopher Hill donated 30 works to the University.

The collection was then increased in 2018 with a further 20 works donated from prominent collector of South East Asian Art, Michael Abbott AO QC. “They’re amazing works. Although one of our collecting priorities is for works from South East Asia, these were the first acquisitions of Balinese art for the CDU Art Collection. Once we had the two big gifts together, it amounted to a fair whack of fantastic Balinese art,” Joswig says.

The exhibition is a great opportunity to learn a bit more about the culture of our neighbours across the water, and may even open your eyes that bit wider next time a Bali holiday calls.

AROUND TOWN In-Conversation: Tennant Creek Truths WHEN ARTIST AND MUSICIAN ALICIA SCOBIE first moved to Tennant Creek from down south, she was struck by how green the town centre was.

“It’s not as orange or as dusty as people think – there are all these pastels of beautiful pinks and purples. The stars are also unbelievable, it’s like you can reach up and grab them. And the people of Tennant are wonderful and have a great sense of humour and they tell a really good story,” she says.

The picture Alicia paints of the outback town, almost 1000km south of Darwin, is different to the picture the media paints, and she’s determined to make sure it's positive stories that are told.

Alicia now calls Darwin home, and is digging deeper into the history and the stories of Tennant Creek, re-visiting her old stomping ground to interview locals as part of her 2019 Creative in Residence at the Northern Territory Library.

“I was getting really sick of the negative rhetoric about Tennant Creek in the media. Even while I was living there, it was a hot spot for anything negative going on. But when you immerse yourself within that community, it’s a place with a heart of gold, where your mates become your family. I really wanted to bring some of the positive stories to the forefront.”

“I want to add my own interpretation of Tennant Creek and the people who live there. The project is called Tennant Creek Truths and comes from the voices of people who live or have lived there, and I think that gets missed in the media a bit,” she says.

“The majority of the people I spoke with all had the same thing to say about Tennant – it’s a great place, you just have to take the time to get to know it.”

Curator’s Cut The NT Library officially launched their Curator’s Cut program as part of the Darwin International Film Festival last month. The series showcases rare films from their audio-visual collection, with one film screened each month until March next year.

The program is the result of a successful pilot program in 2018, which included home videos, commercially released films, cassettes, CDs and DVDs. Documentary style films were selected followed by post-show

This time ‘round, the Library continues to couple the documentary films with a post-film talk, but they’ve introduced classic feature-length films, including this month’s screening of The Overlanders.

Set in 1942 during WWII, the film follows the gripping tale of a ragtag droving team in and their epic cattle drive – a 3,000km journey

across the Australian outback.

The Overlanders was an ambitious film project, produced at a time when Australia was recovering from the trauma of global conflict.

HOMELANDS ARE SITUATED on the traditional land of the people who live there. They are of central importance to their identity and culture.

Homeland Story is a feature documentary about Donydji, (pronounced doy-n-ji), a small remote Indigenous community in North East Arnhem Land.

The film is directed by award-winning director Glenda Hambly and co-produced by Damien Guyula – the Donydji community’s representative, who translated the Yolngu languages spoken in the film, supervised the sub-titling and became the film’s narrator.

Homeland Story tracks a Donydji family’s transition from nomadic life to the digital age in just three generations – from Dhulutarama, the traditional elder who still knew how to make stone tools, to his granddaughter, Joanne Yindiri

Guyula, who teaches at the Donydji school.

It’s a moving portrait of the family’s struggle to preserve their culture and remain on their Homeland despite the severe obstacles they face, such as sub-standard education, lack of job opportunities for youth, inadequate government policy, bureaucratic mismanagement and pressure from mining interests.

Having been to the beautiful (now tourist-filled) city of Prague a number of times, it was fascinating to read an account of its transition from old world to new, and get a glimpse of life under the old regime. The Czech culture Heaslip describes, an odd mix of communist repression and liberal attitudes to art and sex, is both intoxicating and capable of filling several books alone.

Despite this, the magic of Heaslip’s fairy tale adventure is at its most poignant when it’s contrasted with her beautiful descriptions of life growing up on a cattle station in the Northern Territory. “I had a pretty cushy life compared to these three young people – the stakes are a lot higher for them – and if they make the wrong choice, the consequences are a lot greater.”

On the cusp of adulthood you’re faced with many choices. Some are easy to make, others, not so much.

“The play deals quite a bit with what fate throws at you. As the character Elvis says ‘some people get better choices to choose from’.

Some people are more privileged than others in terms of their life journey, and some people are dealt a rotten card to deal with the best they can,” Butler says. decide if she’s ready to become a mother.

To write the play, developed in partnership with the Australia Theatre for Young People, Butler looked back at her own experiences in her late teens.

During the development, Butler spoke with many teens about their lives and the challenges they face, and was surprised to discover how different the experience is for young people today, compared to her own youth.

Burlesque seems to be getting more and more popular, what sparked your love for it?

I’ve been a burlesque performer for 18 years now. I’ve always been interested in the aesthetic and I really love the pin-up style. When I went to the US 18 years ago, there was a big revival in L.A. When I came back, I mentioned it to a friend and we started when there weren’t that

CORNER SHOWCASING TOP END COMICS AND LOCAL STAND-UP PERFORMERS

Many of us attend comedy gigs as a bit of an escape. To have a chuckle, maybe a beer, and to not take life too seriously for just a little bit. But it’s not always light or funny moments that inspire the comedians on stage. I caught up with Leah Potter to chat about what inspired her to get into comedy, and how she turned her darkness into light.

Please note, some readers may find this content confronting.

So Leah, you co-founded the All The Single Ladies international tour of regional Darwin. What is it and what inspired you to kick it off?

During the 90s, Mayfair Gallery was decked out as a bondage dungeon and I worked there as a dominatrix.

This year, I decided to book Mayfair for my own Fringe show – Recollections from the Dungeon – where I told stories from that time with musical intermissions by Gravy Train… We completely sold-out.

Then Amy Hetherington suggested I get together with Gabby Wolfe and Hanada Ghazala, also Raw Comedy finalists, to put on a girl show. We came up with All The Single Ladies and performed it at the Fringe Comedy Garden. It was really well received, so we shopped it around to other venues in Darwin suburbs.

It’s been so much fun!

How did you go from being a dominatrix in the 90s to a comedian today?

I’d like to talk about what really led me to stand up comedy but it’s a bit dark.

I was born in Darwin but had a rough childhood and ran away at the age of 13, spending my teenage years on the streets of Melbourne.

I came back to Darwin in my 20s and worked in the sex industry. I struggled with complex trauma and social anxiety, and was diagnosed with bi-polar in 2008, so I moved back to Melbourne where I later married and had kids.

Last year, I returned home to Darwin, leaving an unhappy marriage behind in Melbourne where I’d

endured domestic violence for over a decade. It was a really sh-t time for me and my kids.

I’m so sorry to hear about your experience. How did you get through it?

When I got home, I concentrated on helping people even worse off than I was. I founded the Sunset Soup Kitchen and spent my days rounding up food, then went out every night to feed Darwin’s homeless people.

That’s still my favourite thing to do!

I feel grateful for every little thing in my life and the soup kitchen is how I pass some of that gratitude on.

So, after everything that happened, how did you find the confidence to get on the stage in the first place?

I was asked to speak about domestic violence and the sex industry for SPUN on International Women’s Day. I really wanted to do it but I was in a dark place with my mental health. So I sought professional help and spent about six weeks working through complex sessions of hypnotherapy and trauma treatment.

I didn’t know if I was going to be able to do the International Women’s Day gig but I thought I’d see if I could get up at an open mic competition and entered Raw Comedy. To my shock and surprise, I made it through to the final!

And… I did do SPUN for International Women’s Day. Therapy was working.

And all of this has happened in a year! Looks like comedy may be your therapy, in a way?

I am still physically sick before every show I perform but I do my breathing exercises and remind myself I know how to do this. I’ve been telling funny stories at my own dinner parties my whole life.

It’s the same, just a larger audience – and they’re strangers!

Any words you’d like to offer anyone going through tough times?

If you want to do something, but your mental health is holding you back, reach out for professional help. It’s not your fault that you struggle – there is help.

If you don’t get it from the first

person you see, don’t be afraid to ask if you can please change to a different one. Sometimes it takes a few tries until you click with the right one.

Life is just too short to spend it in the dark.

Kicks SCHOOL HOLIDAYS ARE HERE AGAIN. The downside to no classes (if you can call it one…) is finding fun things to do to fill in the days.

Launch Darwin has teamed up with AFL NT for another day of action for their annual AFL Clinic for teens aged 11-17.

We caught up with Nicky Hyland from AFL NT to find out what’s involved.

How does one of your AFL clinics roll out?

The first session is all about skills, so we go over things like handballs, kicking, bouncing, and just have a bit of fun with that.

From there we get into some fun games – not necessarily footy based. They’re games like capture the footy, kick-tennis and baseball footy. It’s a great way to let off some steam, and after that we get in to some little AFL matches.

Any rising stars spotted over the years?

Yeah, there are always a few kids who stand out and like to show off! It’s a good time of year to get involved because it leads in to our NTFL season, so we let everyone know how to get involved and a few usually go on to join clubs.

That sounds like a good way to cool down! Do participants need some footy skills already?

We always get a good mix of kids who haven’t done any footy before and aren’t necessarily sporty kids, and kids who have played a bit before.

It’s just a good fun day – they’re in their element and out there

And a chance to make new mates?

Yeah. A lot of that age group know their friends from school or footy, so it’s a good way to meet a new group of people.

The Aboriginal Interpreter Service (AIS) provides much needed services to Aboriginal people of all ages across the Territory. AIS works to ensure Aboriginal people have access to interpreters, and that language barriers are overcome so members of the community who mainly speak Aboriginal languages have access to quality services.

AIS also provides employment opportunities for young Aboriginal people in Darwin and in community, including casual employment

Language Indigenous people who speak Indigenous-Australian languages may not have strong English skills, and sometimes need interpreters to access a range of important services. These include things like government agencies, health and legal services. These areas usually involve a lot of jargon that can be confusing even to native English speakers.

Due to the great mental, and sometimes emotional, nature of interpreting, interpreters need to take regular breaks. If they don’t take a break after a certain amount of time they run the risk of interpreter fatigue. In 2009, a UN interpreter collapsed after interpreting for 75 minutes straight – an extreme case of interpreter fatigue!

Emily Tyaemaen Ford is a Rak Mak Mak Marranunggu woman from Kurrindju, who speaks two languages Rak Mak Mak Marranunggu and Rak Marrithiyel. She is on the City of Darwin Youth Advisory Committee and works in Indigenous research at Northern Institue.

Interpreting is a pretty skilful job, supporting people who don’t have strong English skills to do things native English speakers may find easy. They are the unsung heroes of our communities and connect people, share information and bridge gaps between different groups of people everyday.

I take my hat off to all you interpreters out there – keep doing the great work you guys do!

WE ALL LOVE OUR PETS, but would you know what to do if your beloved furry friend got injured?

If you want to learn how to help your fur baby when they’re injured, City of Darwin’s Animal Policy and Education Officer Angie Heriot can help!

She’s running a pet first aid workshop these school holidays, so we caught up to have a quick yarn about it.

Our pets are very special to us – this workshop is a great idea. What can those attending expect?

We’ll teach participants how to bandage their pets and go over how we treat small cuts and abrasions.

We’ll also chat about responsible pet ownership, like having correct identification, and I’ve got some stuffed toy dogs we can practice microchipping on.

I’ll also go through vaccinations and some of the common illnesses that can affect animals if they’re not vaccinated.

How did you end up in your role?

I studied vet nursing and did a bit of science work, and also did a lot of internships overseas working with lots of different species. I never thought policy was a space I would get in to!

So, besides being a vet or a vet nurse, there are other careers out there animal lovers can get in to?

There sure are! There are jobs working in research, looking at specific disease control of animals, and policy development, like me.

Who should come to the workshop?

Anyone that has an animal and cares – they don’t have to be domestic animals either!

Just Peachy

AS THE FOOD TRUCK trend takes over the Top End, so too do bars on wheels.

Octopus and the Peach is one of the newest boutique bars to hit the streets in town – figuratively that is.

The trailer can be hired for private functions and events, catering up to 150 people.

The brains behind the biz Minoushka Hesketh says she was keen to take the leap, starting her own business after more than 20 years working in the hospitality industry

as a pastry chef and bar manager.

After looking for a bricks and mortar venue, it was a trip to Sydney that gave Hesketh the idea to add wheels to her bar. And it wasn’t long before the perfect vehicle popped up – well, almost perfect.

“I’d seen a few bar vans pop up and thought that’s totally something I could do. I was flicking through Buy Swap and Sell, and this beautiful little horse float popped up in Humpty Doo. We went out there and checked it out and kicked the tyres. This was in the Wet season

last year and she was a beauty, standing soaked in the rain. This 38-year-old trailer had been used and loved by many – and it smelt like that, too,” she laughs.

With some help from some friends – and a few old blokes pulled out of retirement – the float got a fresh lease on life as Octopus and the Peach, replacing horse aromas with the tantalising aromatics of a tropical bar.

“We supply the professional bartenders, the beautiful trailer and garnishes, and assist with a customised drinks list and predict the amount clients need to purchase. I wanted to use Darwin flavours with Territory flair – mango daiquiris, lemongrass and ginger mojito – we even do a lychee Tom Collins,” she says.

With similar plants to the Philippines, Edna loves being able to cook traditional recipes in Darwin. She relishes the opportunities offered to learn and connect with new people in the Top End, and loves to share her passion with her community.

On a beautiful Dry season day in Nightcliff, at The Mulch Pit Community Garden, Edna shared her story of coming to Darwin along with this easily made but delicious recipe from her home region. She was joined by local food enthusiasts, community gardeners and other migrant women. It includes green pawpaw, which grows easily all year around in Darwin, and lemongrass and moringa, also commonly grown in the Top End.

outside inside WHEN ARTISTS HANNAH VAN DER WAL AND DAVID WICKENS first met at an exhibition opening at Outstation Gallery, they didn’t anticipate they would have their first joint exhibition on those very same walls.

Their show, outside inside, looks at how the lines between outdoor and indoor living get blurred due to living in the tropics. The couple currently call East Arnhem Indigenous community Yirrkala home, and have each lived in different spaces in Darwin and Arnhem Land.

“In Darwin, I’ve always lived in tropical homes with louvres,” van der Wal says.

“There was one house I lived in in Rapid Creek that didn’t have louvres, but had windows that opened out with no fly screen. We’d have birds come in sometimes and you always felt so in touch with nature, even when you’re lying on your bed in your bedroom.”

Wickens had a similar experience when he moved to Gunbalanya five years ago, birds and all.

“I moved in to this rickety old house, totally open to the elements.

I’d have to go and bash on an old saucepan to shut-up the corellas outside my window. You experience the outside come in to your personal sanctuary. But when you’re

not living like that, you’re yearning for the outside to come in.”

The couple knew the time would come for their work to join forces for a show.

“We both knew we’d do it at some point. We’ve both always been artists and we’ve talk about collaborating a lot,” Wickens says.

“It’s a great partnership, and it’s not been stressful or overly thought out. The works are going to speak to each other but we don’t know how that’s going to happen until we see it on the wall. But we know our works are going to bounce nicely off each other.”

The Janama Collection: New Works by Eddie Kitching GOOGLE EARTH PROVIDES INSIGHT and inspiration for new works by Darwin artist Eddie Janama Kitching.

Kitching comes from a large family of eight sisters and two brothers, with extended family in the remote communities of Daguragu, Kalkarindji, Pidgeon Hole and Alice Springs in the Northern Territory.

Eddie’s grandmother was born at Walu Jara Jara (Cattle Creek) on Wave Hill Station, and his mother at Brock’s Creek Station. Both were removed by Government authorities (Stolen Generations) to Darwin in about 1924.

The Wave Hill area is famous in Australia’s history for the ‘walk off’ in 1966, where Aboriginal stockmen walked off in protest for better working conditions, better pay, and the struggle for land rights. The walk off is recognised as the first fight for land rights in Australia.

Discovering his Grandmother’s country has been a lifelong journey for Kitching, one that has been integral to this creative practice.

New ways of seeing have translated into new forms that articulate the rich river systems and sites of Walu Jara Jara and surrounding areas.

Kitching has incorporated Google Earth into his research of Country,

abstracting the data along with his knowledge of the land into new contemporary forms.

The Janama Collection is a suite of new works depicting the wampana (agile wallaby) and kununarra – ngar na (brolga) – songlines that traverse the landscapes of Walu Jara Jara. Surprising colours and shapes articulate warlu (fire), ngawa (water), junganyina (rain and lightning) and kalarirri (frog Dreaming). This new work represents a shift in Kitching’s longstanding painting practice.

Geoff Todd Whimsy PAUL JOHNSTONE GALLERY is proud to announce the representation of outstanding artist Geoff Todd. Well known in Darwin, Geoff Todd’s career is long and illustrious.

Along with many private collections, his work is also represented in the public collections of Canberra’s Australian National Gallery, the Australian National Library of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria, the State Library of Victoria, and the Museum & Art Gallery of the Northern Territory.

In 2019, he was awarded an AM for significant services to art and sculpture.

PAUL ARNOLD SPENT MORE than a decade working in the defence force, then the mines, before he picked up a camera and spent 16 years as a landscape photographer. Now, Arnold is more interested in creating limited edition artworks and high-end products with his imagery, including scarves and homewares.

Bringing together recent artworks

by Henry and Fernanda Dupal, this exhibition celebrates creative endeavour in partnership. Form and function, and colour and light are some of the considerations driving the artistic practice of these two Darwin artists. Henry works in ceramics, with wheel thrown vessels and high fire crystalline glazes, and Fernanda creates works on paper exploring multiple photographic and printmaking processes.

Taksu: The Art of Bali profiles recent gifts to Charles Darwin University by two of Australia’s most prominent collectors of Balinese art, Michael Abbott AO QC and the late Christopher Hill.

Regurgitator has been one of Australia’s most iconic bands since it burst onto our airwaves 25 years ago, with hits like Polyester Girl and ! (The Song Formerly Known As).

Now, they're coming to Darwin as part of their Quarter Pounder tour.

riginally a side project for the trio – Ben Ely, Quan Yeomans and Peter Kostic – the band has forged a successful career as experimental alt-rockers, blending different genres into their sound. They’ve even tapped into a new generation, with the release of their kids’ album this year, The Really Really Really Really Boring Album.

Bassist Ben Ely looked back in time with us to have a chat about the last 25 years of the ‘Gurge.

You’re hitting the road for the Quarter Pounder tour celebrating 25 years of tunes – what’s in store for the show?

We’ve been planning on doing something pretty special for this tour for a while. It’s going to be the biggest show we’ve ever done and we’ll play the longest we ever have. We’ve planned all these special things…

Any ‘special things’ you can tell us about?

Yeah. We’ve compartmentalised the show into different sections from our career, with each of those sections having different costumes and short films for the transitions. We’re planning a pretty good show – as far as our shows go. I don’t think it’ll be as big and Guns N’ Roses (laughs).

When you hit a big milestone like this, do you tend to reflect, or look forwards?

When you’re a creative you’re always looking forward. If I do a record, I’m always thinking about what I’m going to do next. But this year we’ve looked back a bit and our manager is sending us this huge list of all the gigs we’ve ever done, and we’re going through the back catalogue to pick the most interesting songs to play – there’s just so much stuff!

What’s it like listening to songs you were writing in your early 20s?

Music is like a little time machine, where you go back and you not only remember what happened to you through the song, you also feel it, and feel how you did when you were younger.

It’s really quite strange. You become a different human being to who you were when you were younger. It’s like seeing a stranger but knowing them so intimately.

Highlights from the past decades?

The thing that blows me away the longer we go on as a band, is the fact the audiences have always been there for us, and continue to appear when we play. It’s really quite amazing. We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them.

Are you finding new audiences and still striking a chord with young people?

It’s funny, my daughter was at school and one of her friends said “have you heard this band? They’ve got really weird lyrics”, and played her I Sucked A Lot Of C—k to Get Where I Am, and she said “yeah, that’s my Dad’s band.”

That’s hilarious! How is touring these days, now you’re a family man?

These days I want to go to bed at 8.30pm – I don’t want to stay up late. In the old days, I’d stay up for days and not eat. Now I like getting up early and watching the sunrise.

It’s going to be weird. For this show we’re systematically going through our music, and when we started out we were really heavy, so we’ve got this heavy, intense start, with lots of yelling and I think, Oh my god how did we do this? All this yelling and distortion! (laughs)

If you could see any artist or band – living or dead – this weekend, who would it be?

Amy Winehouse. I loved her badass attitude and I think her voice is incredible. I think I’d just go see her by myself to avoid someone talking to me through her set.

What song would you like played at your funeral?

Don’t Cry by Guns N’ Roses.

guitar and drove over. I couldn’t leave the guitar in the car in case someone stole it, so when I walked in they said ‘oh, you’re here to play’.”

She burst on to the international stage in 2003 as the first female and non-American to win the International Blues Challenge, and has gone from strength to strength.

In recent years, the Melbourne fingerpicking legend has hit the top of the charts with her latest album Voodoo in the Shadows.

Boyes played a few songs, soon realising the venue picked their favourite performer from each open mic night for a play-off. The grand prize? A guitar.

It all started back in the Melbourne ‘burbs when she heard about an open mic night when she was still fresh and learning.

“I hadn’t been playing for very long when I heard about this open night on the other side of the city and thought, great, I won’t know anyone there, so I borrowed a car and a

“I ended up going in the play-off and winning, which was great as at that point I didn’t own a guitar,” she laughs.

“The competition wasn’t about who was the hottest player, it was about encouraging talent. I tell them it’s their fault – they encouraged me and set me loose on the world!”

Boyes is grabbing her cigar-box guitars and her band, Tim Neal and Mark Grunden, ready for

the inaugural Darwin Blues Rock Festival. The line-up includes Chris Finnen, Harry Brus, Dillion James Band, Bernie Bremon and The Lost and Found, and festival organiser 8-Ball Aitken.

“It’s also an opportunity to showcase those talents for members of the national industry so that our message goes further. “

Bush Bands Bash showcased six bands selected from a highly competitive application pool – Mutitjulu Band, Rising Wind Band, Eylandt Band, Docker River Band, Mala Band, and MB Reggae. Rounding out the stacked line-up was two Country Arts WA Sand Tracks bands – Mambali and Barkly Drifters – plus Desert Divas Patsy Coleman, Lena Kellie and Celestine Rowe, and a tribute set from Tjupi Band.

All performers participated in the three-day development camp, Bush Bands Business, with mentoring from world-class industry professionals before the Bash, and their hard work was evident at the Bush Bands Bash concert showcase with all performances captivating the crowd.

“One of the really fun things about festival gigs is that there’s a bunch of other musicians, so it’s a chance to catch up with old mates and make new ones. In the last set of the night we’ll all jump up and play together, because blues has a jamming tradition, and that’s really exciting because we don’t know what’s going to happen. It’s a time for people to let loose and play hard,” Boyes says.

FIONA BOYES MAY HAVE BEEN late to pick up the guitar, but that hasn’t stopped her forging a career as one of Australia’s most respected blues musicians.

A culmination of two of Australia’s top music industry events, Bush Bands Business and Bush Bands Bash, the event allows the public to share in the rich history of Indigenous music and culture, and provides artists from remote locations with the opportunity to connect with the national music industry.

“Bush Bands Bash is a celebration of the incredible, talented musicians in our community. It’s a time where they can let loose on stage and really show what they can do,” says Bush Bands Program Manager Laurie May.

THE 30TH BIRTHDAY celebrations just keep on coming for DSO, with two events this month for young and old. We caught up with Artistic Director/Chief Conductor Jonathan Tooby to chat about them.

Tell us about Heroic Beethoven!

This show is dear to me as Beethoven is my favourite composer. The Eroica Symphony is my favourite of his nine symphonies, and is the jewel in the crown of this particular performance. This is complemented

by Rodrigo’s Guitar concerto, which is all lightness and fun, and features Australian guitarist Craig Ogden. We’re starting the show with Tromba Lontana, a short work by John Adams that brings a

completely different soundscape to the performance.

The Kids’ Classics Four Seasons is also on this month – why do you think it’s important to expose young minds to classical music?

It’s incredibly important to expose young people to music of all kinds.

There is ever increasing evidence that music, classical music in particular, improves children’s learning, creativity and communication skills, while being fun and collaborative. I believe it is a language that unites us all.

The official event to mark 30 years of the DSO was held in August, with a very special collab between

composer Lachlan Skipworth and Mambali band member Don Nunggarrgalu. What was the response like?

No one was prepared for the overwhelming response from the audience for this world premiere of Yuwani. There was an instant standing ovation with many moved to tears, including myself, and there were endless cheers and “bravos.”

I’m so excited this marked the beginning of a journey for DSO, collaborating with the rich and ancient art and music that surrounds us here in the Territory.

Don’s performance will be remembered by many for a very long time.

Together with Don and Lachlan, we

are planning take Yuwani to new audiences in 2020.

What has this milestone year meant to the DSO family?

2019 has been a terrific year on many fronts. When we have responses like the one we all had to Yuwani, it speaks to me that this orchestra is in a good space and really making an incredible contribution to the community.

This has been particularly important this year, as our 30th anniversary is a year of reflection and celebration. It’s going to be hard to top 2019 but I’m optimistic we can keep getting better. Exciting times ahead!
