The Northern Territory Library recently unveiled their new permanent exhibition, which takes a closer look at a vast array of Territory stories.

here are stories about the Northern Territory that most people know – the devastation of Cyclone Tracy, Sweetheart the five metre crocodile, and the reason the skies explode with fireworks on July 1.

But the new semi-permanent exhibition at the Northern Territory Library, A Territory Story, takes a closer look at the region’s 60,000-year history and the personal stories of those who have called the NT home.

As you enter, a powerful statue of a figure in chains accompanies the story of Ayaiga – an Aboriginal man who saved the life of a police constable who had arrested him in 1911.

Historian and co-curator Samantha Wells says the story illustrates the complexity of the history between Aboriginal people and the pastoral settlement in the early 1900s.

“Ayaiga was a man from Roper River – he and three other men had been caught by Constable Johns and arrested for stealing food from Hodgson Downs Station,” she says.

The three men were locked up in neck chains and forced to swim across the flooded Wilton River in the height of the Wet season.

“The men in chains got across fine,” Wells explains.

“But Johns was holding on to the saddle of his horse and his horse rolled in the current and kicked him in the head.”

Ayaiga jumped in the river, pulled the unconscious officer to safety and the men took him to the Roper River police station to make sure he was okay.

Constable Johns went on to become the South Australian police commissioner, and also fathered two daughters in the Territory – including Darwin icon Charlie King’s mother.

Ayaiga was awarded the Albert Medal, the British Empire’s highest award for saving a life, by King George V in 1912, a replica of which can be seen in the exhibition.

“We chose to tell this story because of its complexity – it’s not about the success of pastoralism or the resistance of Aboriginal people – it tells a much more complicated story,” Wells says.

The deceivingly large exhibition captures a diverse snapshot of the Northern Territory’s history and provides a glimpse into the vast collection held at the library.

The development of tourism, housing, music and life in the NT are told through audio-visual displays and listening stations where visitors can hear first hand stories from Territorians, including members of the Stolen Generation and icons from the past.

Wells says the exhibition isn’t just a tourist site – it’s been designed specifically with locals in mind.

“We wanted to create a place for locals to come and feel like they’ve come home,” Wells says.

“Exhibitions work well if you can tell people something they already know, and give them something extra, so they can identify with something and then go ‘wow’.

“The tourists learn something about the Territory, and many locals comment that the exhibition makes them feel proud to be a Territorian”.

The exhibition was a huge collaborative process, and will remain in place for a number of years – but it’s worth a look on every visit, as there are developments and additions to come.

Gentleman’s Ride TWEED JACKETS AND WAISTCOATS AREN’T NORMAL TROPICAL ATTIRE, but more than 250 bikers will don their Sunday best to participate in an international fundraiser for men’s health.

“To be honest, it wasn’t due to the cause (that I got involved) but more of an excuse to get out on one of my old bikes, a 1950 Panther M100, Cleckheaton – Yorkshire’s finest motorcycle,” Leather says.

The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride (DGR) takes place globally on September 30, but Darwin’s dapper dudes and dudettes will be doing the ride a week later so they can still enjoy the AFL and NRL grand finals.

“It’s only now that I’ve been involved that I’ve become aware of the issues and challenges in the fields of men’s health.

Dan Leather has been involved with the ride for four years as an excuse to get out on his bike, but along the way he’s learned more about the causes the ride supports – prostate cancer research and men’s mental health.

and Thriemer says she wanted to share her favourite memories with Top Enders.

“We’ll have a lot of traditional food, including kaiserschmarrn for dessert.

“My husband is German and it obviously has the biggest festival, but the place where I grew up had a smaller festival,” she says.

“It’s a little bit like a pancake, but it’s done in a huge pan and then cut into smaller pieces. It’s usually served with hot plums with cinnamon and cloves, but we’ll make a more tropical version and use mangoes because they’re in season.”

“I always liked the smaller festivals that were more intimate and less touristy and with more emphasis on the food.”

Everyone is encouraged to dress up to complete the atmosphere.

“A lot of people see Oktoberfest as an occasion to drink themselves silly, and obviously it is about the

beer, but we’re trying to make a nice festive dinner where you can enjoy the food” she says.

Artist Residency THE TAIWAN-AUSTRALIA INDIGENOUS ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM presents a unique opportunity for cultural exchange between First Nations artists.

Nhulunbuy dancer Rachael Wallis recently travelled to Rinari, Taiwan, to undertake a six-week residency as part of the program. Wallis reflected on her experience for Off The Leash.

“Arriving in Rinari was really amazing because you have to drive up the side of the mountain and we’re just looking; ‘wow is this where we are going’? In Rinari you are kind of on a plateau on top of a mountain – you drive up one side and there’s the village but then you look into the distance and there’s massive mountains all around. It’s really slow paced.

I’ve never met so many visual artists in my life, so it really made me want to work more with people like that – for backdrops, or props, or design. You know those artists back home, ladies who are weaving, people who are painting. They’re things that I can dance about now – this experience really awakened that in me. It all connects! I’ve always kept it separate – ‘I’m a dancer’, ‘you’re a weaver’, ‘you’re a painter’, ‘you’re this or that’, but actually we’re all doing cultural work and we’re all telling stories and bringing our ancestors into our works.

In Taiwan I did three main performances. The first one was in Taipei for the NAIDOC celebrations and the second was the theatre at the cultural park where I collaborated with local artists – we had a Paiwan singer, a Truku musician and myself, an Australian Aboriginal dancer.

The final performance was my farewell presentation, which also was a powerful collaboration with local performers.

Ultimately, the residency has made me think about letting go, creating movement, and allowing things to come to you. Now I’ve returned I really want to make time so I can create and let nature and environment and family influence my movements. Even more than that, it’s being carried by it.

At times I don’t have to think. It just happens, and I can’t explain.

That experience of having to put together my final performance in such a short time really proved to me that there is another force, there is something else, that when you dance traditionally, or when you let your spirit dance, then it can. It’s not just about learning the movements and doing the maths in your brain, just that there’s this energy and there’s other things that get you there.”

that sits as a cross between Moulin Rouge, with a touch of Crazy Horse, high-art circus theatre, comedy and magic cabaret.”

Co-creator and director Richard Vegas says the show ties together many elements of cabaret and burlesque performance.

The show started out a long way from Paris in Melbourne at Red Bennies, where after an eight-week season in 2013, Vegas says he realised there was something special about the show.

“We’ve got a high proportion of magic in the show,” he says.

“There are illusions as well as classical and original stage magic, plus classic entertainment like tap dancing, burlesque and circus performances.

“It was the way people reacted and let us know how much they loved the whole show – not just certain performances. That rang bells and I thought ‘hang on, we’ve got something really special here’,” Vegas says.

The show features Vegas as MC Monsieur Marveaux; one of Australia’s few female magicians, Julia Madotti; circus artist and dancer Hannah Trott; tap-dancer Eden Read; singer Aurora Kurth; and burlesque showgirl Mimi Le Noir.

In the five years since its inception, the Paris Underground Cabaret has toured all over the country and is finally heading to the Top End. “We’re very excited about coming to Darwin, more excited than anywhere else we’ve been this year, to be absolutely honest,” Vegas says.

Singularity the play follows Commander Alene Shaw (Ella Watson-Russell) who is shaken out of cryogenic sleep with no memory.

She finds herself trapped in the damaged ship with only the eccentric artificial intelligence for assistance; she must unravel clues about herself, her past, her mission, and her concept of reality before she crashes into a black hole.

IT’S A RARE OCCURRENCE TO SEE SCIENCE FICTION ON STAGE, rather than in the pages of a book or on the silver screen.

But screen writer and now playwright Philip Tarl Denson is bringing the genre to Brown’s Mart in a one-woman show, Singularity.

Set in the emptiness of deep space,

“Science fiction is a genre often underrepresented in theatre, especially in Darwin, as both audience and artists alike tend to see it as a spectacle driven, visual genre,” says Denson.

“I’ve had to adapt it as a screen play and I’ve added more action and things for the protagonist to do so it will work as a film.”

“However, science fiction is never really about science or the future, it’s about us – humans and our relationship with technology.”

The debut theatre production is directed by local Tania Leiman to ensure a female voice is present through the whole production – not just from the character.

Denson, who has several film credits under his belt, says writing for theatre allowed him to use different techniques that are not often found in film.

“I originally wanted to direct but we decided with a female lead to the story, it would benefit from having a strong female voice,” Denson says.

The Victorian State Ballet is bringing a stellar cast to Darwin as part of their ‘Season of Love’ performances, which showcases traditional fairy tales.

Cinderella’s cruel stepmother and stepsisters are getting ready for a magnificent ball given by the Prince of the land. They torment hard working Cinderella, leaving her behind, dreaming of dancing at the ball.

A Fairy Godmother appears and sees to her sorrows, transforming her ragged clothes into a glittering gown. As she makes her way to the ball, her Fairy Godmother warns her to be back at midnight when the magic will vanish.

Arriving at the ball, it’s love at first sight for Cinderella and the Prince.

Their love blossoms as they dance the night away. Losing track of time, she runs off at the stroke of midnight, leaving her slipper behind.

The prince searches for the one who fits the slipper perfectly, while Cinderella returns to her workday life, treasuring the memory of the prince – with little hope of seeing him again.

This retold story of Cinderella features internationally recognised artists in leading roles and an outstanding cast from across Australia and abroad in a production rich with virtue, sensibility and grace.

Whimsy, Honesty & Comic Mirth DARWIN ENTERTAINMENT CENTRE IS COMEDY CENTRAL THIS OCTOBER with some of the biggest names in comedy set to hit the stage.

If you prefer something more lowbrow, the ‘Loosest Aussie Bloke’ Alex Williamson will bring tales of drugs and terrorists in his one-hour ‘honesty session’.

Bill Bailey returns to the Top End, following his sold out Larks in Transit tour, with his new comedy and music extravaganza, Earl of Whimsy.

Williamson took to Facebook when he announced his show, saying: “I know you’re usually running from something you (people) that live in Darwin, but I’ll give you something to run towards for once – my show.”

It has Bailey’s trademark blend of satire and surrealism, stories and dismantled jokes, crowd singalongs, weird instruments and musical showstoppers.

There’s a distinctly historical feel to this show. With its tales of Britain’s fortunes past and present, of ancient Viking battles, of Shakespeare’s contribution to comedy, and Bailey’s own ancestry, this is both a mockery and a celebration of national identity.

If you’re after something more wholesome, or at least with less vulgar language (we kindly cleaned up Williamson’s potty mouth), Arj Barker has reinvented himself for his latest show, We Need To Talk.

AT THE END OF AUGUST, YOUNG WRITER TIGER-LILY CLEMENTS, 15, WAS NAMED YOUNG TERRITORY AUTHOR OF THE YEAR for her novel Anathema. Her story of a young woman working through heartache over the break-up with her girlfriend impressed the judges from more than 200 entries.

Clements spoke with Off The Leash about winning the prestigious award, and we’ve included a small except from her award-winning novel.

Writing a novel at 15 is an incredible achievement, what was your process?

The process of writing this story was to work out the beginning and end of the story, then to fill in the blank part within the middle.

How did it feel to win this award?

It made me happy to know that people enjoyed my story, and I love that people have come up to me at

school and stuff congratulating me and asking to read it because I feel like I did well, I just don’t like all the attention however, haha.

Best writing tip you’ve come across?

I don’t have a best or favourite one, I do like one of needing to truly break your characters and think about them as real people rather than fictional characters.

Favourite author/writer?

There’s so many, it’s literally impossible to choose just one. I love Roald Dahl, John Green, Stephen King and J. K. Rowling a lot though.

Favourite book?

I love so many books for so many different reasons. Some I constantly reread are Matilda, Paper Towns, All The Bright Places and The Book Of Lost Things.

“Ummm...?”

With an emotion that could be labelled as utter confusion, Vilma examined the girl in front of her. She was her age, that was for sure. She had thick, black hair that stood messily in every direction. A pair of black reading glasses were perched on the bridge of her nose. She wondered if it was just there to make her look fancier or if she actually needed them. Her eyes were the darkest shade of brown, far different from Vilma’s own light green eyes, and as she looked closer, she recognised something in them; rage.

“Well?” She demanded with a raised eyebrow. Vilma snapped out of her trance and zoned back to the matter at hand.

“I really don’t know? You could maybe send him thorns?” She winced at the end of her sentence.

Thorns? Really? Pathetic.

“If I wasn’t so mad right now, I’d go on about how you’re such a sexist who immediately assumes that I’m sending flowers to a guy.”

“I’m sorry, I don’t mean to be rude, I just thought that because you’re a girl that they’d be for a guy.” I apologised with wide eyes.

“That’s fine. I don’t though, but that’s fine.

“And, did you not hear what I said before? I asked for a subtle way of saying screw you. If I wanted it to be obvious then I would have spray painted the middle finger on her door.” She crossed one arm over the other and stared Vilma down.

To say that she was completely taken aback by the stranger’s rudeness would be the understatement of a lifetime. People usually came inside to purchase bouquets for weddings or anniversaries or funerals. Never had she met anyone who entered Eden’s Flower Garden for such a vulgar purpose.

FASHION FESTIVAL Talented young designers proved the Territory has style at the annual NTeen Fashion Festival last month.

Participants aged 13-19 and school classes created garments across a range of categories, including formal wear, casual wear, environmental and wearable art. The winners and runners up of each category will represent the NT at the Apex Australia Teenage Fashion and Arts Youth Festival in Melbourne next month.

Good Shepherd Lutheran College student Dana Carroll, 15, took out second place in the formal wear category. She had a chat with Off The Leash about her experience.

What was the inspiration behind the dress?

A male peacock – I have always loved their showiness, their bright colours and the beauty of their tail feathers. I also love how they are classy, elegant, and confident.

What did you learn along the way?

I have certainly learnt lots – how to sew a dress, what tulle is, how different colours can go well together. I’ve learnt patience, time management, attention to detail and precision.

How did it feel to see it strutting down the runway?

As I was walking down the runway, I, surprisingly, didn’t actually get butterflies. I felt a surge of adrenaline take over me and I felt that I could show off my design and my creation to people who would actually appreciate it and understand the time and effort that is put into them.

I felt confident and like I had certainly shocked the crowd and made an impression that would last.

REVIEWS, TIPS AND ADVICE FOR TRAVELLING THE WORLD WITH KIDS These days the hip crowd in Bali can be found a little bit further north of Seminyak, around the boho neighbourhood of Canggu – an eight kilometre coastal stretch consisting of Berawa, Batu Bolong and Echo Beach. Once the haunt of avid surfers, it’s now also where the hipsters hang. You’ll still see verdant green rice paddies around Canggu – although who knows for how long – and the pace is less hectic than around Seminyak.

The beaches might be known for surfing – not calm, kid-friendly water, and the sand is dark grey – but Canggu has heaps on offer for everyone in the family. I love the funky cafes and the groovy beachside haunts. Yogis are spoilt for choice, no matter what your style – Hatha, Iyengar or Ashtanga – and there are endless places to be

Canggu is a paradise for foodies – vegans, veggies rejoice. But it’s not all turmeric lattes and raw superfood energy balls, there’s delectable Indo food, mouth-watering burgers, Mexican, homemade pasta and wood fired pizzas. My top pick is La Laguna with its whimsical, colourful, gipsy-inspired eclectic decor and tropical gardens overlooking a lagoon. And it’s not hard to fall in love with the charming Dandelion, which is set in an old joglo – the cute resident rabbits are a hit with the kids.

Highly recommended for a family breakfast, lunch or dinner is Milk and Madu, and The Joglo – look out for the movie nights and special kid’s activities – which both have yummy nosh, a great vibe and play areas.

Canggu has nailed the sassy beachside haunt, and there are

some great options. Try The Lawn or Finns Beach Club, which have pools, great views, cool tunes and sophisticated cocktail menus.

Whether you want to chill or be active, you are spoilt for choice.

For a culture fix take the kids to watch a traditional Balinese dance performance at the Hotel Tugu, which oozes the Balinese aesthetic that I love. There are surf lessons for aspiring little wave riders, and for families with littlies, the lovely Gardens Kids Club has a casual drop in centre. Splash Waterpark, Strike Bowling and Bounce Bali will hit the mark for active kids that need to burn some energy. Horsy types will be enamored by the Bali Equestrian Centre, which has to be seen to be believed.

It’s worth getting one of the free Canggu maps when you arrive – pick one up from cafes or shops – as it can be a bit confusing to work out the layout of the area, and the roads are narrow and windy.

CORNER SHOWCASING TOP END COMICS AND LOCAL STAND-UP PERFORMERS

With the Darwin Festival over, you might have thought that the only entertainment left until the end of the year was watching your colleague perform karaoke ‘It’s Raining Men’ at the work Christmas party, then tell their boss that their current role is soul destroying, they have little motivation to continue and suggesting they go halves in a Spanish food truck called Viva La Feeda…

obnoxious conversations that involve over-sharing from which he can eavesdrop and mine new material.

But – every year Laugh It Off brings together a motley collection of dangerously funny comedians.

Not since the Dirty Dozen has such a collection of frighteningly talented mercenaries been assembled. I took a closer look at the outrageous talents of the 2018 Laugh It Off crew.

Scott McGowan migrated from his native Botswana in 2004 with a jar of chicken salt and a great fringe.

He studied local Northern Territory politics and realised Darwin was a great place to do comedy. In 2008 McGowan won the prestigious NT Raw Comedy final and performed at the Melbourne Town Hall to 1150 punters as part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. He wore an amazing jacket. McGowan has shared the stage with the likes of notable comics Greg Fleet, Eddie Iff and Josh Thomas. The fringe is gone – along with most of his hair – but the jokes keep coming.

Justin Brown is a comedy fugitive from Townsville who escaped to the Top End a year ago. Hot off the back of his sold-out Darwin Fringe show, 50 Shades of Brown, which close friends described as “not s…t”, Brown has opened for Urzula Carlson and performed all around Australia and Hong Kong.

He constructs self-deprecating stories, combining dry observations with unique travel experiences that make you laugh and feel strangely uncomfortable at the same time.

Nicole Stevens is the MC, producer and marionette of this rag-tag comic collective. Her quick-fire wit and clever observations are simultaneously effortlessly cool and all types of awkward. Stevens is a master of weaving side-splitting humour into tales of the foibles along the path of life. The winner of the Darwin Fringe Festival People’s Choice Award 2018 for her sold out full-length, original musical comedy show, she looks a lot like her mum and hates tpyos.

Peter Cortissos is known for his quirky, awkward and energetic comedy, and has been performing since he was five years old. He is a graduate of the Adelaide College of the Arts and is a founding member of Adelaide’s award-winning sketch comedy troupe The Golden Phung.

Cortissos claimed the title of Top End Comedy’s Comedy Survivor at the 2017 improv night.

Curator’s Cut RARE AND FASCINATING FILMS EXPLORING THE TERRITORY’S HISTORY will screen at the Northern Territory Library as curator’s delve into the weird and wonderful audio-visual items in their collection.

Curator Charlie Ward and a team put in the hard yards watching films in the library’s collection for Curator’s Cut, a new monthly screening of different flicks.

“We looked for titles that are quirky, interesting or rare in the sense that not many people know about them, with a bit of an eye for issues that are of interest in the community,” Ward says.

From the Front Row Stepping outside my regular book review, this month I take a moment to reflect on criticism in general.

Having recently taken part in the Darwin Festival ‘Front Row’ program, temporarily inhabiting the rather uneasy status of emerging local critic, I found much to reflect on…

Ah Darwin Festival! That glorious time of year when the nights are cool, Civic Park is transformed and the city comes alive with events – a brief but lavish period that thrills and exhausts in equal measure.

This year I was privileged to experience Darwin Festival from a different vantage point. With five other local writers and producers,

director and self-confessed cinephile Patrick Gregory says Curator’s Cut is a great way to reflect on the NT’s history.

Mary and the Witch’s Flower follows a young girl who is whisked away to a school of magic, but soon discovers that not all is as it seems.

The October screening is Buffalo Legends, a film about a group of men who fought racism on the sporting field.

“Film is such an incredible medium to reflect society and as history buffs we love that,” he says.

“It’s about the history of football in Darwin as a vehicle to break down some of those barriers that Aboriginal people have faced, and the way footy has improved life,” Ward says.

“It’s about football, but it’s just as much about multiculturalism and breaking down barriers.”

Such opportunity for critical exchange and reflection was exhilarating! Donning my artist pass and festival tote bag, I excitedly gathered in conversation after each show.

My heady confidence was relatively short lived, however. A few days into the Festival I expressed my excitement at being involved in the Front Row program to a local director. Their response was quick and dismissive: ‘Being a critic is easy. Anyone can be a critic’.

The conversation turned to other things more urgent at hand. Yet the comment had bite to it and it lingered in my mind. There is, of course, truth to it. All criticism is subjective. Anyone can be a critic – indeed every single audience member is a critic of sorts. What was it about my response that is worth writing? What kind of expertise does a critic claim?

In This Corner of the World is director Katabuchi Sunao’s adaption of Kono Fumiyo’s comic of a young girl who married into a family in Hiroshima during the war.

I attended a selection of shows, conversation circles and workshops as part of the Festival’s ‘Front Row’ critics program – a developmental initiative established in partnership between the Festival and Brown’s Mart Theatre in response to the lack of local criticism in Darwin.

In a different conversation, another arts colleague expressed the opinion that Darwin ‘absolutely does not need reviewers but we do need a formal process for creative feedback’ – which I took to mean that producers and directors could be part of the local developmental process but critics could not. I started to wonder what the value of criticism was for Darwin specifically?

In a small arts community it is hard to imagine how a formal criticism process might evolve. Darwin audiences, for the most part, are incredibly generous. As the awardwinning playwright Mary Anne Butler recently expressed at the NT Writers’ Festival – it is the unique character of the arts community Darwin – free of pretense – that produces a generative and supportive space to create freely.

Would the introduction of criticism diminish this unique strength?

With a distinct lack of local outlets publishing critical responses, where does the emerging critic emerge?

Hyper-aware of these questions, I continued on my critical journey somewhat more cautiously. Which is not a bad thing. For what I learnt in this program is that while anyone can be a critic, good

criticism is hard work. Criticism done well requires a willingness to look within or beyond your own immediate response. First reactions are easy but the depth of a creative work is found in exploration and interrogation.

In thinking through what it means to inhabit the position of critic, I was grateful to stumble across Jana Perković’s delightfully satirical and astute column ‘The Critic in the Episode “The Criticism”’ in The Lifted Brow – in which, in an unusually serious tone, she writes: It is easy to think that writing criticism means giving your opinion on the quality of somebody’s art, but that is so rarely the point. At its heart, criticism is an act of translation of art into words… an interpretive gesture.

Reading her column renewed my sense of critical purpose and value.

So too did Richard Watts’ glowing 4.5 star review of Tracks Dance Company’s In Your Blood, which reminded me that in its resistance to criticism Darwin often misses the opportunity to celebrate and affirm local work within the national conversation.

For 18 days I felt wholly consumed by the Festival. It was an immersive experience. But in reality I went to less than half of the shows. It is intoxicating to now reflect on how many other, almost infinite, ways beyond my own there were to experience this Festival.

My reviews, and others, published online by Off The Leash, therefore, are just one of many potential readings – an interpretative gesture offered by this ‘emerging critic’ in the interest of extending the conversation. Here’s hoping the critical conversation continues in Darwin.

W LD THERE WILL BE ‘BOUNDLESS POSSIBLE’ AT WILD WORDS this month, with the Northern Territory’s controversial new slogan set to get chins wagging.

Host and English teacher Shele Parker Black says the ‘deliberately jarring’ but grammatically incorrect slogan is the theme because it seems everyone wants to talk about it.

“I had so many of the Wild Words regulars coming up to me and talking about it, making fun of it and telling me how they had amended it to try and make it grammatically correct or have it make sense,” Black says.

“I had too many of those conversations to ignore, so I wanted to

give people the opportunity to respond.”

Black says she expects regulars of the monthly spoken word event to show their true colours when responding to Boundless Possible – whether it be satirical or personal.

“I think it’s a nice prompt that allows us to talk about what we understand this place to be, and it gives us the opportunity to do things that are heartfelt,” she says.

“It also gives us room to move, explore and play with our words.”

Wild Words attracts a diverse mix of wordsmiths every month, and isn’t against having some politicians drop in to hear some public opinions on the campaign.

Celebrating 10 years

OUTSTATION GALLERY IS CELEBRATING A DECADE IN DARWIN THIS YEAR. To mark the occasion in May, the gallery held a collaborative exhibition with Maningrida Arts and Culture, where the idea for Outstation originally emerged. Director Matt Ward had a chat with Off The Leash to tell us more.

How did Outstation start?

After living in Maningrida as a schoolteacher, I was asked to set up and run the Maningrida Arts and Culture Gallery in Darwin. After three years I set up Outstation to work with unrepresented, emerging artists from remote communities.

What was your inspiration for the gallery?

Seeing the direct benefits that art centres provide to communities, I wanted to support and help educate about the importance of purchasing Aboriginal art ethically.

Where did your passion and eye for art come from?

Growing up in Canberra I used to be dragged to the National Gallery by my parents. I then did an anthropology degree at the Australian National University, which focused my attention and interest in Aboriginal art.

Portrait of a Senior Territorian GARY SINGLE HAS BEEN INVOLVED WITH THE PORTRAIT OF A SENIOR TERRITORIAN competition for a number of years hanging the paintings, and this year he’ll see his face staring back at him.

Artist Katalin Horompo met Single through her partner Max who worked with him two decades ago, and decided he would be a good subject for her to paint.

“I met up with Gary in his framing studio for a photo shoot as, at that point, I didn’t realise this competition required at least one live sitting,” she says.

“So after completing this first photo based painting, I decided to enter it into the Royal Darwin Show instead, and won the portrait painting section with it.

“While painting this first picture, I learned more about Gary and his calm, accommodating personality, which I wanted to capture in a second painting for this competition, so we met at my place for an actual sitting.”

Have you noticed any trends in Indigenous art over the last 10 years?

We now see artists producing digital photography, video work, metal sculpture, and animation, as well as new materials like the (etched metal) piece by Guynbi Ganambarr (which won the) NATSIAA this year.

What have been your highlights over the last decade?

Establishing the Salon des Refusés with Paul Johnstone Gallery; placing work in national and international institutions; in 2011 some private collectors purchased an entire exhibition and gifted it to the National Museum; spending time with the artists we represent.

During the sitting Horompo took several photos and continued the piece to capture his character.

“I felt I needed to bring some unique features into the painting from Gary’s working life,” she says.

“That’s when I thought it would be an interesting approach to depict the back of a picture frame, which is what Gary has been creating for decades and adding value, albeit unrecognised, to the work of artists.”

The painting, titled ‘Verso’, is Horompo’s first entry into the competition, which this year celebrates 40 years of selfgovernment in the NT. The annual awards recognise the contributions seniors make to the Territory, and this year will feature 25 portraits, including a subject born in 1918.

Still in my mind

“He was incarcerated in a number of government homes in the NT until he was sent to boarding school in Queensland in 1940,” she says.

“THAT LAND…I’VE STILL GOT IT IN MY MIND.”

“We returned to the NT in 1974 to meet my grandmother and he returned regularly on work and to see family.

When he died in 1996 my brother Tim and I took his ashes home to Kalkaringi.

The immortal words of revered Indigenous leader Vincent Lingiari is the inspiration for the touring exhibition, Still in my mind.

The exhibition, presented by Artback NT and curated by Brenda Croft in collaboration with the Kalkaringi community, reflects on the historic Gurindji Walk-Off with an intricate audio-visual based exhibition.

Croft began this project, part of her creative-led PhD, in 2012.

“I first went to Kalkaringi and Daguragu in 1991 on family history research, two years after my father, Joe, had similarly gone back to undertake family history research,” she says.

Her father was born at Victoria River Downs around 1926, then, along with his mother, Bessie, was taken to Kahlin Compound in Darwin in 1927.

“His funeral service and burial was held the day before the 30th anniversary of the Gurindji Walk-Off event.”

Still in my mind was developed from this combined long-standing family history research spanning more than three decades.

The prints in the exhibition by Karungkarni artists were created during the Wave Hill/Megalo Print Studio and Gallery cultural exchange for Canberra’s centenary celebrations in 2013, facilitated by Croft.

Still in my mind will tour nationally in 2021, and Croft hopes to see it travel internationally to share the visual histories with a wider audience.

The exhibition incorporates work from other linked projects from Croft.

“The history paintings in the exhibition by Karungkarni artists were created during a 2014 artists’ camp and site visits during research for the publication Yijarni: true stories from Gurindji country, which was launched at the 50th anniversary of the Gurindji Walk-Off from Wave Hill in 2016,” she says.

Jane Kennedy’s exhibition is an installation of found and foraged objects, both natural and inanimate, with deconstructed pieces from discarded technology; her intention is to make the viewer consider the origin, species, use and structural components of these objects.

Fledgling focuses on work developed by Charles Darwin University (CDU) students through experimentation; pushing the boundaries of printmaking materials and techniques. MANGOHIG GETS the MYER

Darwin musician, producer, collaborator and artist James Mangohig got the call of his life last month when he found out he was one of eight successful applicants for the Sydney Myer Creative Fellowship. he local legend will receive an unrestricted tax-free grant of $160,000 over two years to continue his work as an artist. The success is also national industry recognition for his tireless creative commitment to his extensive body of work.

Mangohig says for the time being the Fellowship is some financial breathing space, but he won’t be dropping his current projects to fly across the world to collaborate with his idols – at least not just yet.

“In many ways I don’t think my plans have changed, regardless of the money I’m going to be doing the same projects,” he says.

“I received a grant earlier this year from Arts NT to make a solo record, but this money is a bit of brain space and financial space to create that record.”

His new project, From The D.O.T.S is a celebration of his love of playing bass, his obsession with G-funk, hip

hop and disco, and his personal life as a Filipino Territorian.

“I really want it to reflect my life as an Asian Australian growing up in the NT and working in the industry here, and to be the kind of thing the Chief Minister could put on and say ‘I’m so glad this was made in Darwin’,” he says.

Not only is Mangohig working on his own record, but he’s also involved in numerous other projects including Stevie Jean’s debut EP, Mambali band’s record and upcoming tour to Meredith Music Festival, and as a “hired studio slave” for his long-time collaborator Caiti Baker, among many others.

Mangohig was nominated for the Fellowship by local arts advocate Angela O’Donnell.

“He is a very well-loved individual and artist and for all those reasons he’s been nominated and successful – his capacity to support and his encouragement of

others, his steadfast commitment and contribution to the Northern Territory scene,” she says.

“It’s a bit of a game changer to have this strong endorsement by the national industry.”

Mangohig and Baker helped O’Donnell put together the application – a process that gave Mangohig a rare opportunity to reflect on his career and achievements.

“It’s a really humbling process,” he says.

“I know I’ve worked really hard, but because I’m constantly working I don’t get a moment to reflect on it.

“Doing the application with Angela made me realise how much stuff I’d done that had meant something.”

For now, Mangohig is controlling his spontaneous urges to fly to New York, but watch this space.

Xylouris White WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A RENOWNED CRETAN LUTE PLAYER MEETS A POST-ROCK DRUMMER FROM MELBOURNE? The answer is Xylouris White, the visionary musical collaboration of lutenist George Xylouris and former Dirty Three band member, Jim White.

“I provide the sound of my culture, and the things that I have in my head, and Jim does roughly the same thing, but from a different musical culture.”

A fearless mix of avant-rock, free-jazz and ages-old Greek folk traditions, their 2014 debut album Goats topped the Billboard World Music chart, with rave reviews of live shows trailing behind.

Xylouris is part of a vibrant living tradition spanning many generations. Learning Cretan lute, or laouto​, at his famous father’s knee and playing professionally since he was 12, Xylouris also provides the vocals for the band.

While it’s difficult to stick this explosive duo in any one-genre box, it’s definitely a cultural collision that produces the goods according to Xylouris.

In contrast, the musical culture of White has him clocking credits such as playing with Lou Reed, Neil Young, and Marianne​Faithful, along with his Dirty Three fame.

“This is what you hear in his ballet music, which is why so many people relate to it and why his name is always tied to ballet.”

“Prokofiev totally captures the foreboding of the evils written into the story. It is distinctly disturbed and has a heaviness I think we have all related to at some time in our lives.”

For Tooby, programming a concert of dance music is a first and he says sifting through all the amazing material written for ballet has been a joy.

But he’s particularly excited about the special guests joining the orchestra for Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker Suite, complete with sugar plum fairies.

Voices of Remembrance

A Territory Story of War and Peace

One hundred years ago a document was signed that effectively ended what was known as the ‘war to end all wars’ – World War I. To commemorate the Armistice of 11 November 1918, the Darwin Chorale joins a cast of local actors to bring to life the music of the era in Voices of Remembrance.

Through a woven narrative of song and stories, the audience follows two young men from very different

worlds in pre-war Darwin, into the trenches of war torn Europe and back again.

Director Shalom Kaa says he wanted to tell a Territory story with an ANZAC twist.

“The more I researched, the more fascinating it became. I really wanted to highlight the way in which music kept everyone going.”

revealed the naivety of those at home who expected their boys to return much earlier than they ever did.

On the home front, music kept loved ones placated, while on the Western Front full-time bandsmen entertained troops, and soldiers whistled ‘Waltzing Matilda’.

He says the songs span several genres and are a kind of soundtrack to the times.

And then there were the songs that offered lightness and escape like ‘I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside’, ‘The Man I Love’ and ‘Anything Goes’.

Tunes like ‘Pack Up Your Troubles’ were patriotic calls to war, while classics like ‘Now Is The Hour’
