We’ve made the call not to proceed with the combined Dec/Jan mag for a bunch of reasons, but the biggies include the ongoing impact of COVID and to give our team a decent rest. We look forward to returning in 2022 refreshed and ready to take on another year.

All month long, the humble laksa is celebrated far and wide across the Territory in this year’s Darwin International Laksa Festival, and in more forms than one. Wait ‘til you read about the Spirit of Laksa gin (yep!) or have a crack at making Mary’s laksa. Yes, that Mary.

It’s about this time of year that Christmas shopping features on the to-do list, and where better to pick up gifts for your loved ones than local craft markets? Check out the Tactile Arts and Green Ant Christmas Craft Fairs – both air-conditioned – and buy directly from the makers. The wonderful artists from Munupi Arts on the Tiwi Islands also return to Darwin for a special Christmas pop up. Ah, I just love Christmas!

Theatre and dance are big on the calendar this month, as well as classical music with performances by the Darwin Symphony Orchestra and Arafura Music Collective. Of course, there are wonderful art exhibitions to treat your peepers to.

In OTL news, we bid farewell our wonderful Editorial Assistant Rita, who will be leading the charge at next year’s NT Writer’s Festival. Laksa Lovin’ It’s a rite of passage in the Top End to tuck into a steaming bowl of goodness spilling over with noodles, melt-inyour-mouth meats and crunchy veggies, seasoned with spices swimming in coconut milk and sprinkled with crispy fried shallots.

This month, we celebrate the mighty laksa, as the delicious dish takes its rightful place front and centre on the menu. And in more forms than one.

hroughout November, and for a third consecutive year, you’re invited on a culinary trip around the Territory to dive into Darwin’s "official unofficial" dish for the 2021 Darwin International Laksa Festival.

For decades, locals and visitors have tantalised their tastebuds with the humble laksa, our close proximity to Southeast Asia and our wonderfully multicultural community guaranteeing us the most authentic of recipes.

And for many, no trip to the local market is complete without one. So a festival in its honour is absolutely justified. And very, very welcomed.

Revered by many as the best laksa you’ll find this side of Asia, kitchens across the NT have been busy perfecting their recipes for the festival. Reaching beyond the city this year, the Best Regional Laksa category has been introduced to allow food haunts outside D-town to participate.

The Kamayan Café is a small cafe in Nhulunbuy specialising in Filipino cuisine, and owner Beth Regan says they’re chuffed to be part of the action this year.

“We’re so excited to be included in this kind of event, and I’m so pleased that they discovered my laksa and that they think it has a different taste.

I make it special with the ingredients – we combine Filipino with Malay and Thai, and we mix up these flavours and use really fresh herbs from the garden,” she says.

“There have been so many comments about it – it’s the most popular dish in our shop. Sometimes, we can make up to 50 a day!”

The Laksa Food Tour encourages people to eat, vote for, and enjoy a range of laksa and laksa-inspired dishes all month long. Laksa, of course, features heavily on the menu, but there are some out-of-the-box laksa-inspired concoctions on offer.

If you like your laksa chilled – and spiked – enjoy a cheeky tipple with cocktails and gin on the bevvie list. Charlie’s of Darwin owner Bec Bullen says she and her team enjoyed the challenge.

“We love playing around with Territory flavours in the distillery and laksa is one of them. We had in our plan to do five or so different experiments to get the laksa gin right but we got it right the first time – when we tried it, we thought it was lovely! We’re very happy with ourselves,” she laughs.

“Fendi, our chef, is Indonesian and this is his gin recipe because we wanted it to match with the food. There are notes of ginger, lemongrass – which can become more subtle when distilled – ground coriander, and of course juniper, with bay leaves and chunks of coconut.”

If Charlie's Spirit of Laksa Gin wasn't tempting enough, they're dishing up a swag of fare to feast upon.

“We have laksa with crocodile dumplings – they are delish – a chicken laksa wellington with creamy coconut notes, and a coconut laksa sorbet coming through with spices and botanicals that we used in the distilling process, so that we can be as sustainable as possible. It’s also gluten free and vego, and if we remove the white chocolate shavings, it’s also vegan.”

Well, our mouths are watering.

In an effort to support local business in what’s traditionally considered a quiet period, this year’s Festival features over 60 businesses and 90 dishes, more than doubling in size since the festival’s inception in 2019.

The month-long feast fest culminates in a daylong celebration in the new location of the Laksa Lawns – aka State Square – with fun and flavour for the whole family.

Mary’s Legendary Laksa Mary’s laksa is a hot fave on the list, attracting huge queues of hungry laksa lovers patiently lining up in the heat at Parap Markets each Saturday.

In 2020, she was voted People’s Choice, and for good reason.

In an Off The Leash exclusive, Mary’s shared her recipe with us.

Give it a whirl, and if you don’t quite nail it, no worries – just pop in to Parap and pick up a bowl!

Ingredients Homemade laksa paste (Okay, Mary kept some secrets...)

Chopped onion Salt to taste Sugar to taste Oil Preferred protein: chicken, seafood, tofu, etc.

Fried tofu Whatever veggies you like!

Coconut milk Noodle – rice or yellow Fried shallots Fresh coriander Chilli sauce Mary (centre) with her friendly team

Recipe

Step 1 Cook your noodle first, 5 to 10 minutes until tender. Drain them with water. If you want to cook the yellow noodle, maybe only five minutes.

Do the same – drain them with water.

Step 2 Stir-fry onion and laska paste in oil for about 1-2 minutes. If you like it strong, put in more laksa paste. Add water and bring to boil. Reduce the heat and then add sugar, salt and coconut milk to taste. If you like it sweet, add more sugar. Or add more salt and more coconut milk, then put in the fried tofu.

To Serve Put your noodle in the bowl, whatever meat you like and veggies, then put your laska sauce that you cooked. If you like, add chilli. Also, you can add dried onion and fresh coriander or fresh chilli.

MELVILLE ISLAND MAGIC THEY SAY TO appreciate the rainbow, you must first put up with the rain. So, if COVID is the rain, then Munupi Arts Christmas Pop Up Sale is surely the rainbow.

Located on Melville Island on the north coast of the Tiwi Islands, just over 100 clicks from Darwin, Munupi Arts & Crafts Association is a vital meeting place for the Tiwi people of the Pirlangimpi community.

Forced into a mostly online space for the better part of the past two years, the artists of Melville Island have forfeited physical exhibitions, adjusting to presenting their work in a digital format.

After a successful Christmas pop up market last year, Munupi Arts manager Guy Allain says they’re making tracks back to Darwin.

“Because of COVID, and restrictions meaning most of our shows were presented online, people haven’t had the opportunity to see [Munupi] artwork in the flesh.

Last year at the Christmas pop up, we had a great response from the Darwin public, so we thought we’d do it again,” he says.

Face-to-face interaction has been sorely missed by the artists of Tiwi.

Showcasing a selection of over 300 works from more than 30 artists, these beautiful works feature the traditional colours used in Tiwi paintings of yellow, red, white and black ochre, reflecting the tradition of natural and found pigments.

Shirley and Jacqueline Puruntatameri, also artists, echo Josephine’s sentiments.

Given the success of last year’s event, with all things going well for this month’s pop up market, Allain says it’s something they’ll look to continue in future.

“It makes us happy and to show our paintings for the Darwin people

In a Territory first, the Northern Territory Government is offering up to $10,000 per applicant to foster the growth and development of early career artists and arts workers through the NXT Gen ARTS initiative.

NXT Gen ARTS is a new grant category offered through the 202122 Arts and Culture Grants Program, developed to support the upskilling of young artists and arts workers in the NT arts and cultural sector.

Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage Chansey Paech says it’s a worthy investment.

“The Territory Labor Government values our creative industries and that’s why we are strengthening our future arts sector with our NXT Gen Arts grants,” he says.

“One of the goals of our Creative Industries Strategy is to create new pathways for business, employment and career development to ensure we have a next generation of Territory artists and arts managers.

“Through the NXT Gen ARTS initiative, artists have a career pathway opportunity and the Territory has the opportunity to retain young talent.”

NXT Gen ARTS aims to assist young early career artists in gaining hands-on arts industry skills and knowledge relevant to the NT, and to connect them with future employers in the arts sector.

Organisations and businesses interested in hosting a young artist or arts worker are encouraged to submit an expression of interest to Arts NT, with information about their organisation and their capacity to host and what the placement may look like.

Started by local potter Di Whittaker 31 years ago, the fair – formerly known as the Marrara Christmas Craft Fair – has gone from strength to strength, outgrowing Marrara Indoor Stadium, necessitating the need for a larger venue.

Held over two days in the air-conditioned comfort of the Foskey Pavilion and Rotary Hall, you’re sure to find a truly unique pressie made with love.

This year, some exciting goodies to keep an eye out for include brightly coloured fine art prints, greeting cards, fabrics and Babushka dolls by Marita Albers, and quirky sculptures inspired by iconic Top End critters such as bin chickens – aka the white ibis – and geckos by Simone Porrovecchio.

“If you do your shopping at the craft fair, you can send gifts all over Australia and you know the people you send them to aren’t going to be

HERE’S NO DOUBT about it, there’s some serious talent kicking around the Territory when it comes to filmmaking. In 1999, the Fist Full of Films Festival was established to celebrate the NT’s best short flicks.

This month, after a five-year hiatus, the exciting film fest is being re-established thanks to the support of Darwin Community Arts.

Festival Director Tim Parish says it’s an important initiative for emerging NT filmmakers.

The 2021 Fist Full of Films Festival showcases the best short films, documentaries, animations, music videos, drone video and experimental video art made by Territory filmmakers over the past two years.

A special film workshop program also rolled out during August and September, giving creatives the chance to hone their skills.

“It is the only chance for young, emerging and established filmmakers to share their work,” he says.

“Our workshops were a huge success with almost all of them filled to capacity. It shows a strong appetite for more skills development in the local community, as people want to share their stories through the medium of video and film,” Parish says.

“I think this kind of event is essential for developing a strong film community in that we are able to come together and celebrate the incredible creative work being produced across the Territory.”

The festival culminates in a special red carpet Galah Awards Night at the home of Territory cinema, Deckchair Cinema, with winners from each of the categories in the running for $10,000 in prize money

FILMS and rewards. There’s also a special showcase screening of all finalists the following Monday.

“The Galah Awards Night and Finalist Screening will be a real treat for film lovers, who’ll get the chance to see the very best of the NT’s creative screen industry and the diversity of the work being produced here in the Top End …

We received over 130 submissions across all categories, which is a fantastic representation of the amount of creative activity taking place across the NT.” All things going well, it looks like the awards are here to stay, with current plans to run the event every two years.

TAKE THE FAMILY on an enchanting journey through the ancient ecosystems of Kakadu in a stunning new picture book by Diane Lucas, Ben Tyler and Emma Long, Walking in Gagudju Country: Exploring the Monsoon Rainforest.

As a teacher, Diane found working

with the children an enlightening experience, learning just as much from them as they did from her.

“The children just know so much.

I remember Ben, he had this lovely yam he liked … and some of the other children taught me to sing for it … and you would find it in the grass,” says Diane.

Despite the 20-year age difference between them, Ben and Diane always got on well and have long wanted to collaborate together.

Meeting children’s publisher Erica Wagner from Allen & Unwin at the Octopus 19 story camp, run by Darwin-based production house Story Projects, provided them with the guidance they needed for the project to really take off.

For Ben, it’s a special opportunity to share Bininj history.

“It comes back to the idea of sharing our stories and our culture, and we do that through our lived experience. Di and I share stories from our lived experience and

what old people have taught us."

Infused with Bininj culture and knowledge about the animals and plants in this unique part of the world, Walking in Gagudju Country places the much-loved landscapes of Kakadu in a new light for both children and adults. Emma Long’s exquisite illustrations bring the details of environment – from the berrerd-berrerd (rainbow bee-eater) and kabo (green ants) to the an-nunjek (bush grape) – and the stories of ancestral beings, such as the Rainbow Serpent, to life in glorious colour.

Founded and co-edited by filmmaker, producer and cross-media artist, Timothy Parish, and Indigenous writer, animator and illustrator, Jonathan Saunders, Wild North Comics showcases the breadth and brilliance of the Territory’s comic scene.

Bursting with colour and compelling storylines, the anthology features an eclectic blend of genres and styles – from meditations on the cosmos to interesting new takes on the Western genre.

“It’s an exciting thing to bring writers and artists together to tell stories together, and the comic book medium is such an imaginative and fun way to be able to connect with audiences,” says Parish.

The inspiration for both the title and the anthology came from the iconic poster art of Franck Gohier, whose pop art piece, Picnic at Berry Springs, depicts a faux comic book cover that plays with stereotypes of the Top End as a place that’s just full of dangerous creatures.

“It was something Tim and I thought was a great cover for an actual Wild North Comics, so once we started to get the ball rolling on it, we approached Franck Gohier who was more than happy to have his art work as the front cover,” explains Saunders.

“Fingers crossed he has time to maybe whip up another one for the next issue!”

With a phenomenal response from the public and more artists, writers and comic book enthusiasts coming out of the woodwork, the editors have opened a call for submissions for the next edition, due to launch in December this year.

LIGHTS DOWN AT THE DECKIE THE AIR’S GETTING thicker and we’re all feeling a little sticky, which means it’s almost time for Deckchair Cinema to pack away the deckchairs and take down the festoon lights for the year.

But before they batten down the hatches and close for the Wet, there’s still the chance to catch a few fab flicks on the big screen.

As most of us already know, it’s been another tough year for those working in arts and events. So it’s an extra special achievement that Deckchair Cinema has – bar a few short lockdowns – been able to operate for a full season, bringing lovers of cinema stories from all around the globe.

“We look forward to a mixture of artists and writers from the first issue and some new faces,” explains Saunders.

This year, despite all the uncertainty, the Deckie even managed to deliver the Darwin International film Festival (DIFF). DIFF 2020: Take Two, as it was called, lit up the screen for a week back in May, presenting the second half of the 2020 DIFF program.

“A lot of other festivals were going online … so there was a lot of support for having an in-person festival that people can enjoy,” says James Parker, Deckchair Cinema General Manager.

Overall, the cinema, Parker admits, has been incredibly lucky – both in terms of weathering the ups and downs of COVID and in having a wonderful, supportive community.

“Whenever we have new staff starting, they’re always amazed at how lovely everybody is that comes to the cinema, and to have such a positive space that people just really appreciate.”

Head to this sweet seaside setting and soak up that positive atmosphere before it disappears for the year, with the Fist Full of Films Festival – complete with the Galah Awards Night and Showcase Screening – and a special screening of Fargo on closing night.

And, luckily for us, you can still catch that incredible Darwin Film Society programming when Flix in the Wet starts up in January.

Collide

Collide MAGINE THIS. You’re sitting on a shuttle bus on your way to the airport. Perhaps you’re a bit anxious about running late or maybe you’re thinking about the people you have to leave behind for a little while?

Suddenly a hail of money rains down, covering the front window of the bus.

This extraordinary situation actually happened.

The tale was told to actor, director and theatre-maker Tania Lieman when she was working on a show for Darwin Fringe Festival called In My Skin. The money, it turns out, had been stolen, and the robbers – cornered at the top of a building – threw it over the balcony and onto the street as a last resort, where it collided with a passing bus.

This incredible scene etched itself on Tania’s mind and she soon

started pondering what might happen if she combined it with other stories shared with her in the course of creating In My Skin.

And so, she placed four characters on that fateful bus ride, and the beginning of what would become COLLIDE was born.

“All the stories in COLLIDE are real,” says Tania.

In My Skin, the project that brought many of the stories in COLLIDE to light, involved Tania collaborating with people living with mental health issues. As a result, COLLIDE also explores what it means to live with these kinds of issues.

“One character describes that she was like a ‘Tasmanian devil whirling around destroying relationships and people and places’ … through those lifestyle choices and she lost the ability to see in three dimensions, for six months, she could

only see in 2D,” says Tania.

Bringing the terrors of the mind to life on stage is no mean feat. It was during a week-long creative development process, where Tania worked with actors and choreographers Joanna Noonan and Immanuel Dado, that the show’s current form began to take shape and the collaboration with SLIDE Youth Dance Theatre took off.

Using dynamic choreography and a non-naturalistic style that amplifies emotions, the dancers from SLIDE become physical manifestations of what Edgar Allan Poe called the “imp of the perverse”, that dark part of ourselves that pushes us to engage in self-destructive behaviours.

“The dancers really are the imps of

the perverse in the show, and they manipulate and lift and drag and pull and sit on the actors, so it’s really dynamic and really exciting.

“It’s magic realism, where anything is possible and we take it right out of the literal.”

Featuring a lightning storm, a robbery, a hail of cash, real rain and stories that explore the extraordinary moments in ordinary

lives, however you want to describe COLLIDE, it’s sure to be an unforgettable night of physical theatre.

Evening Reads The Complete Works of Wilhelmina Baker WILHELMINA BAKER’S MUM is doing her best as a single parent trying to keep her kids out of trouble. But she’s struggling.

The neighbours are reporting them up to no good, their school teachers are worried about how they’re coping and, on top of all of this, a stranger has moved into the caravan in the backyard that used to belong to their dad.

Despite her mother’s strict orders to the contrary, Will is insistent on getting her play written and staged, no matter the cost.

Kyle Walmsley leads the charge as director for the final instalment of Brown’s Mart Theatre’s 2021 play reading series, Evening Reads, penned by award-winning Aussie playwright Brendan Hogan of Yackandandah in regional Victoria.

“I was involved in an early stage development of this work with Playwriting Australia and was impressed by the heart, humour and the sophistication in presenting dark and uncomfortable issues for

young people. The play reads really well as it’s very dialogue-centric and driven,” he says.

Hogan has won the national playwriting prize for young people, the Martin-Lysicrates prize, twice – once for this very play. The Complete Works of Wilhelmina Baker gently, yet hilariously, unpacks loss and family identity, all with Hogan’s signature “warm hug” comedy that is disarmingly child-like and authentic, making it an obvious choice for Walmsley.

“Brendan Hogan is a hidden gem of young people’s theatre in Australia. The journey is totally heart shattering, sobby, tear-jerkery, and I think that even translates in a read.

Connell says his comedy-juggling combo wasn’t exactly planned.

“I wish I was smart enough to have thought to combine them, but no, it was definitely by accident.

I’d juggled for years as a hobby in high school but stopped in my twenties when I started getting into stand up. I always assumed no one would want to see the two together,” Connell says.

“Then one night I did some juggling at the end of a set at a comedy club as a joke. People loved it and I thought, ‘oh, I’m on to something here’, so I started mixing the two and people have been loving it.”

MAGIC THAT MOVES The Magic of Dance – Cinderella

“Especially for the really little ones who’ve never been out and performed in that sort of environment before … seeing them after they’ve done their dances, they’re just high as kites and so excited about what they’ve just done, whether it was a small part or a big part.”

For Jackson, however, educating children through dance goes beyond just the performances.

“The value that kids get out of doing something that requires them to be very disciplined at the same time as having fun … they certainly get lots out of it and it follows them for the rest of their life.”

MAKE TRACKS TO Brown’s Mart this month to enjoy some of the hottest new Territory dance, as part of Tracks Dance Company’s development program, Fresh Tracks.

Offering a platform for developing dance-makers to explore their choreographic vision in a supported environment, the program culminates in a showcase of four short performances.

With three of the choreographers featured in this year’s showcase having come through Tracks’ Choreographic Development Program, Fresh Tracks is a testament to Tracks Dance’s important role in cultivating a strong and diverse Territory dance culture.

“We had 14 artists that came through that program, and through that, we identified some people that

had started to make work that we thought could really take flight in a program like this,” says curator of Fresh Tracks, Jessica Devereux.

Fresh Tracks features dance-makers at different points in their creative journeys, from rising star high school student, Mave Ward, to seasoned teacher and choreographer, Marita Smith.

“Marita’s an incredibly skilled choreographer in her own right, but she hasn’t made a lot of independent work. We thought it would be really lovely to give her that platform to make a work outside of the school situation,” says Devereux.

Expect an eclectic mix of dance styles with Steph Spillett bringing the hip-hop and contemporary moves, while Sita Valadian and

Nicky Fearn team up to present a piece that blends their different cultural influences. Valadian has a background in classical Indian dance, while Fearn is a well-known theatre-maker with a movement style Devereux describes as “full-bodied and emotional.” Get set for an innovative dance duet, performed to live music.

For Devereux, however, the best part is being able to see how hungry people are to make their own work.

Robyn Frances took out the top prize in 2020 for her portrait of John Scrutton, a Woolwonga storyteller, with a particular focus on their joint position on fracking. She says it’s important to shine a light on the senior members of the community.

“This is a truly special award. I think it compels us, as artists and viewers, to focus and reflect on the identities, histories and experiences of a generation of Territorians that have seen, experienced and learnt so much,” she says.

“More than the play of paint on canvas, it is the rich and unique personal story of the sitter embedded in a person’s portrait that gives it its power. People that sit for portraits are anything but passive in the process, they are vital creative collaborators.

“I think this particular exhibition is a real opportunity to honour and shine a light on these people’s stories which would otherwise be less visible to a larger part of the NT community.”

The 2021 exhibition, held in the beautiful historical setting of the Main Hall of Parliament House, opens next month and runs for about two weeks. Winners are selected by a panel of judges and are announced at the exhibition opening, and the People’s Choice prize is decided by public votes submitted while the exhibition is open, the winner walking away with $1,000 once votes are tallied.

Embrace the opportunity to see some of the Territory’s colourful characters celebrated through portraits, all painted by Territory artists.

46th Katherine Art Prize AT THE KATHERINE Show in 1975, generous benefactors Jeanette and Brian Lambert founded the Katherine Art Prize, chipping in $500 for an art award to acknowledge and celebrate Territory artists.

A huge 46 years later, this locals lovin’ award is still going strong.

Held annually at Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts & Culture Centre (GYRACC), the Katherine Art Prize is the longest running art award in the Territory.

With $8,750 in prizes up for grabs this year, the event encourages professional and emerging artists and students to develop their practice and showcase their talents and skills to the region, through two

and three-dimensional artworks.

GYRACC’s Interim CEO Toni Tapp Coutts says the org is honoured to continue the tradition.

“Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts & Culture Centre is very proud to be the keeper of this prestigious Territory Art Prize. It is a prize for all Territory residents across all genres of art practices.”

The number of works submitted to the awards varies each year, with about 120 works put forward in 2020. Awards are broken into five categories, with some serious cash up for grabs.

Across the Seas

ne of the joys of living in a multicultural society is that we have the opportunity to become acquainted with many different cultural traditions. But have you thought much about how some of these traditions can morph and create different fusions as they travel into new contexts?

An exciting new concert, From Sea to Sea, featuring Arafura Music Collective and iconic Top End music group The Darwin Rondalla, takes you on a musical voyage to explore this idea, illuminating the way cultures travel and make connections between the old and the new along the way.

For those of you who may be unfamiliar with the Rondalla tradition, it is a shining example of this very process.

“The Rondalla tradition started in Spain, travelled to South America through Spanish colonisation and then travelled from South America to the Philippines as the Spanish went there, and the Filipino people made it their very own,” says Arafura Music Collective Artistic Director, Claire Kilgariff.

Basically an ensemble of stringed instruments played with a plectrum or pick, Rondalla morphed into its own distinctive sound in the Philippines and even developed

the acoustic design of the original European instruments.

Traversing the seas yet again to land on the shores of the Northern Territory, Rondalla found a new home in the vibrant 1930s Darwin music scene, revealing the way our Top End town has long been a cultural melting pot and gateway to Asia.

The concert also explores the movement and evolution of other cultural traditions and connections with a piece by local composer Cathy Applegate, ‘Flamenco’, celebrating Darwin-based musician Netanela Mizrahi’s connections to the musical traditions of Spain.

English composer Malcolm Arnold’s ‘Three Sea Shanties’, on the other hand, offers a quirky modern reworking of three traditional sea shanties for woodwind quintet, demonstrating how stories and songs from the sea can be transformed into innovative new musical works.

“It really plays with the idea of the sea being the transmitter of culture and the enabler of cultural interaction,” says Kilgariff.

Umi’ (The Sea in Spring). Composed in 1929 for koto, a Japanese zither instrument, and shakuhachi, traditional Japanese flute, the duo performs this evocative piece on guitar and baroque flute.

As you listen to the delicate, shimmering sounds of this beautiful piece, or to the other works in this wonderful program, you might find yourself transported across the seas, considering the way the ships that traverse the waves are also vessels for stories.

Two Fifths

DARWIN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA is set to end the year on a high note with a performance of two mighty orchestral works, bringing their 2021 season to a triumphant close.

[the film] … and in that scene the background music is the slow movement of this piano concerto. I couldn’t think about anything else for the rest of the film. I was just so completely bewitched by it.

Presenting two big fives – Ludwig van Beethoven’s fifth piano concerto and Dmitri Shostakovich’s brooding Symphony No. 5 – the concert features Chinese-Australian star pianist Shuan Hern Lee performing a stirring rendition of Beethoven’s famous concerto.

“So straight after I went to the first CD shop and I said, ‘I want the soundtrack to Dead Poets Society,’ thinking it was some new piece of music that had been written for the film – and it was Beethoven. And that totally was the day my love of that music was born. It completely stole my heart.”

More commonly known as the Emperor concerto, Piano Concerto No. 5 is a beloved classical favourite that some may recognise from films such as The King’s Speech.

Watching the talented musicians from DSO perform this moving work on stage, we reckon it’s sure to steal ours, too.

The second half of the concert presents an equally stirring work that emerged from a very different historical moment – Shostakovich’s monumental fifth symphony.

Written in 1937, at the height of Josef Stalin’s reign, Symphony No. 5 is a complex, ambiguous work that walks a fine line between conforming to the demands of the Soviet

regime and being an expression of artistic freedom and dissent.

At the time of its writing, Shostakovich’s previous work had been condemned by Stalin due its daring, expressionist nature. Symphony No. 5 was his attempt to regain official approval, and the work is subtitled ‘a Soviet artist’s response to just criticism.’ Whether it truly was such a response or whether the moments of exuberance in the symphony are parodying Stalin is a matter of much debate. What is undeniable, however, is the work’s brilliance and intensity.

“Everything’s always on a knife’s edge with Shostakovich… All the emotions we feel, whether they be anger or love or hurt. He gets you about as close as you can get before you’re just crushed by it.”

Written under radically different conditions, these two powerful works together offer an unmissable night of music exploring different facets of the human experience.

“I realised that so much of the music we hear out and about is from America and I was really keen to look at exploring music from other places. This made me think about collecting music from different cities, and before I knew it, I had hundreds of tracks that represented other places around the world,” he says.

“Elevating different people’s voices and movement is one of the most important parts about that journey, too. Nothing brings people together like music and dancing!”

“Everyone deserves the opportunity to see what an orchestra does and it [Family Proms] is making it available to everyone,” says Tooby.

“It definitely breaks down a lot of the stigma attached to orchestras, which is that they’re elite and you can only go if you wear a black tie and earn a million bucks. There’s none of that. It’s music.”

With classical faves, such as Radetzky March, designed to get you up and bopping around, this is one classical music concert where you can really let your hair down.

This month, they’re celebrating this noteworthy milestone with a raging event, best described as a one-night music festival draped in black leather with punters and musicians howling to the moon in pure ecstasy. There’s no doubt, it’ll be big.

The line-up features strong local talent Jeremy Whiskey, SNAKES, Hell Machine, The Holy Dimes, and the recent ABC iView famous, Southeast Desert Metal. Also catch fresh new acts Xanadoom and Fleshvoid, and a taste of upcoming music with a number of the bands recording new albums at the Wreath this year.

And, as is customary, the Wreath releases a special 10 Year compilation album, commemorating the massive decade that has been.

So, what has it been like? It all started with a group of metal musicians, fed up with the local music scene – or lack thereof. “We were ambitious”, one reflects, “but we were also naïve”. A decade on, they’re quietly amazed they’ve achieved many of the goals they originally set out.

The Wreath now has rehearsal space, a proper recording studio, a music venue that attracts an array of groups, and “the way we’ve built Blacken [Open Air Festival] up – it’s now a big national event”.

Pondering the highlights, rather than pointing to a specific event, the word “comradery” comes up. “The way we all managed to take it much further than we ever thought possible. Through teamwork. By all pulling together”.

The anniversary is clearly not just an excuse to have a big bash, but a moment to reflect on and recognise how DIY and community culture can positively impact a place. It’s a big part of Mparntwe/Alice Springs now, and while the original collective has shifted over the years, the space continues to draw people from various walks of life – not just those draped in black leather – and provide a platform for creative expression.

As it’s been supported by more people, the concept, too, has expanded, so it not only supports heavy metal music now, but local music more broadly. Let’s show this space the community support it’s shown us.
