Howdy doody, readers. I can’t quite believe it’s June already, but here we all are. Suffice to say, festival season is in full swing in the NT!

You might have noticed some fresh licks of paint covering what were once bare walls, as a talented cohort of artists beautify Darwin for the 2024 Darwin Street Art Festival.

From the city to the ‘burbs, we’re gifted with 20 incredible new works on which to perve on. And although much of the amazing public program has passed, there’s still plenty to sink your chops into, including one heck of a closing night party!

Lovers of the written and spoken word are in for a treat this month, as the NT Writers Festival returns to Larrakia Country with an incredible program to discuss new ideas, encourage reflection, and inspire action. Our diverse and vibrant rainbow community is celebrated at the 2024 Darwin Pride Festival, with a huge concert featuring local legends and performers, DJs, and the incredible Ricki-Lee.

The V8s roar into town for the betr Darwin Triple Crown Supercars Indigenous Round, featuring homegrown V8 SuperUte driver Rossi Johnson on his home turf for the first time, and Katherine turns trash into treasure at the Katherine Junk Festival.

In the Red Centre, our very good friends at Araluen celebrate 40 incredible years of art and culture in the desert, so head along to raise a glass and enjoy a slice of cake at their big birthday bash. The Top Half Folk Festival returns for its 52nd year (and nope, that’s not a typo!) and you’re invited to soak up four incredible days of music in the gorgeous surrounds of Ross River Resort. If you love a camping festival, this is your jam!

Back up top, Deckchair Cinema celebrates 30 huge years of cinema with a special party and screening of Muriel’s Wedding, and the Darwin Symphony Orchestra returns to Darwin Amphitheatre with their iconic show, aptly called Iconic.

So many gems to experience this month. Enjoy foraging for them!

WET LOOK OUT, PAINT!

Street art was born in the 60s as a movement of free creative expression, transforming abandoned and eye-sore walls into epic works of art. Since 2017, Darwin Street Art Festival (DSAF) has seen more than 100 works of art transform our tropical city. Thanks to this year’s festival, we’re set to gain 20 more.

LAST MONTH, DSAF returned for an eighth year to give Darwin a fresh lick of paint, delivered by local business Proper Creative, funded by the Northern Territory Government and administered by Activate Darwin.

You’ve probably spotted high-vis witches hats dotted around cherry pickers boosting a combo of 30 local and visiting artists sky high over recent weeks, from the city to the ‘burbs. A swag of events has also delightfully rolled out with film screenings, exhibitions, and workshops to make up the 2024 program.

The founding father of DSAF is local artist and Proper Creative boss man David Collins, who says this year’s festival is crafted around community.

“The thinking behind teaming up with other community festivals is that we are all connected.

Darwin’s a big and small community at the same time, and when there’s lots going on, the Darwin Street Art Festival isn’t a festival that’s vying for bums on seats – we’re not looking for ticket sales – we’re just looking to bring paint and life to all the areas that don’t have it,” he says.

“Starting as a pop-up was so fun. It allowed me to have a play with different styles, motifs, and enabled me to re-imagine what could be in the future on a bigger scale … I’m so chuffed my arts are getting immortalised, and I’m super stoked to be able to share with our Territory community and abroad!”

In addition to the local legends, Collins says there’s a few big names thrown in the mix. And some pretty big walls.

“Working with other festivals felt like a bit of a no-brainer, we can offer something that complements their festivals and vice versa.”

This year, DSAF has teamed up with BASSINTHEGRASS, Garrmalang Festival and Sugarbag Festival. Not a bad line-up, right there.

Something Collins is proud of is the pathways DSAF creates for local and emerging artists.

“I’m particularly excited this year about the artists that came through the Pop-up wall program in previous festivals, that are now going on to paint their own walls,” he says.

Katie Hagebols – aka Piper Kidd – is one of the artists that has come through the Pop-up wall ranks, and says the opportunity to have her work permanently displayed is humbling.

“To have Collins and the team back local Territory artists is so important, it’s such a nod and ode to the roots of DSAF and the team. I’m just so lucky that that this year they’ve given me a crack to go bigger and better,” she says.

“I can’t pick favourites, but I was really excited about the Fintan Magee mural at the Darwin Entertainment Centre that went up as a collab with Garrmalang Festival, and the George Rose mural at the Argus Apartments.”

Although some of the program has already passed us by, in addition to seeing the last brush strokes applied to the walls, there’s still plenty to get amongst.

Head along to the DSAF Nighttime Hub @ Bustard Town to enjoy great tunes, pizza and bevs. Dip into the sweet melting pot of art, inclusivity and joy at The Sugarbag x DSAF Block Party. Get on the cans – of the spray paint variety! – at the Sugarbag x DSAF Skate & Paint, or listen in to a special artist talk with creatives from Bali’s Tangi Street Art Festival.

The festival goes out with a bang and fun party times at Bustard Town with Tropidelica - The Lounge of Luminescence, as Femme Funkale delivers a dance party to celebrate the way public art lights up our daily lives.

This month, once the final touches are polished, take a colourful tour of Darwin and marvel at the wonder of street art. At the end of the day, Collins reckons it's a winner for everyone.

“It brings art to the street rather than being stuck in a gallery or an institution. And I love galleries and I love collecting art – I’ve got more art than I could possibly hang on the walls around me! – but not everyone is comfortable in those spaces, and it’s good to have art accessible on the street, and also change the way people view the city, you know?”

Take a tour of Darwin Street Art Festival at your leisure, scan the QR codes on hand to learn about the artists and their work, and treat your peepers to 20 of Darwin’s newest, most vibrant residents.

ALONGSIDE A SUITE of spectacular programming, the Araluen team has curated two special birthday events this month. Celebrating four decades of vibrant arts and culture, the stunning anniversary exhibition, Ground Swell: 40 Years of Araluen, kicks off festivities with a free all-day party.

“We’re putting together a major exhibition, about 200 works from our collection, but also some borrowed works from the National Gallery in Canberra … it’s going to be pretty special,” says Araluen Arts Centre Director, Felicity Green.

Local favourites The Wanted Gems and Espie St AllStars are up first on the line-up, with coffee and food vans at the ready to kick off the festivities. Green says it wouldn’t be a party without speeches from extra special arts royalty.

“Doris Stuart Kngwarreye is going to say a few words as a custodian of Araluen, and then we’ll have a big cake cutting ceremony – free cake for everyone! There’s a free sausage sizzle as well, face painting for the kids, and 8CCC Community Radio is doing a live broadcast from the venue.”

An afternoon panel discussion illuminates the inspiring artists and dazzling artworks of Central Australia, before more musical acts take to the stage.

“It’s really about 40 years of collecting … We’ve got an amazing collection that’s here, housed for our community, so it’s a celebration of that and what we’ve achieved,” says Green.

Later on in the month, Warren H Williams and Family Band raise the roof at a special birthday concert. Expect glorious harmonies, and old and new favourites from the legendary desert musician.

“He’s composed songs for our birthday, so that’s going to be very, very, very special.”

This is shaping up to be the birthday party of the year. Make tracks to Araluen, and celebrate four incredible decades of art and culture in Mparntwe/Alice Springs.

DARWIN SENIORS EXPO

EACH YEAR, THE Council of the Aging NT (COTA) Darwin Seniors Expo brings thousands of community members together to have a yarn and support one another in navigating one of life’s most important stages.

Heading into its ninth year, the Seniors Expo has grown from around 25 exhibitors to more than 100 local organisations, businesses and service providers giving faceto-face advice to the community.

COTA CEO Sue Shearer says the day is much more than an expo, having evolved as the perfect morning for seniors to socialise alongside an event that is for anyone at any stage in their lives seeking individual or family support in aged services.

“You’re never too young or too old to prepare for your advancing years. It’s amazing how people get to 70 or 80 and think, ‘oh gosh, I should do this’. Besides seeing

what’s available in the Expo’s health area, in the activity area and many other areas, it’s a really good way to relax and catch up in a very safe environment,” she says.

“There [are] private booths for each stallholder, with seating available for people as they make their way through the Expo.”

Attendees are treated to morning tea with barista coffee, and Bunnings offers a free sausage sizzle on the day.

“There's a lot on offer for younger people who have yet to start thinking about a personal plan, or have parents or grandparents to think about,” Shearer says.

“If you have a family member who lives alone, they can get a medical alarm, and we have personal safety alarms available, too. We also have activities to help with mobility. We offer Tai Chi, armchair aerobics, and Pilates to keep seniors moving.”

You may be in the early stages of navigating the aged care system and need advice on where to start or find that you’re ready to register with a service provider. While the Expo is created for seniors in mind and is highly accessible, Shearer says everyone can benefit from attending, with around 3,000 people making their way through the doors last year.

"If you want to park downstairs, there’s a lift to bring you up. People with walkers and wheelchairs can go straight out to the terrace, sit down, have morning tea, or wander around.”

So, take your fam and friends or head along solo for a social cuppa at this year’s Darwin Seniors Expo.

Do you feel the need, the need for speed?

Darwin is about to get fast and loud, as the betr Darwin Triple Crown Supercars Indigenous Round hits the track at Hidden Valley for three action-packed days of burning rubber.

NEED FOR SPEED

SUPERCARS CHAMPIONSHIP

ROUNDS are held right across the country, but Darwin is the proud home to the Indigenous Round, and 2024 marks 26 years of Supercars in Darwin.

22-year-old Rossi Johnson is one of a handful of local drivers hitting the track in the V8 SuperUtes comp. After competing around the country, he looks forward to hitting the track on his home turf for the first time.

“It’s really exciting actually. There’s been so many Territory businesses and individuals here that have

helped me, and without them I wouldn’t be where I am today. To be representing the Territory and being one of the few Territory drivers out there, it’s gonna be a pretty cool feeling, in front of my home crowd,” he says.

The proud Territorian and motorsport nut says it’s always been his dream to race.

“As long as I can remember, it’s been my passion pretty much since I was born. Both of my parents were into motorsport, so I guess I was brainwashed. I’m pretty fortunate to

THE ARRAY

have such supportive parents.”

This year sees the return of a crowd favourite to please the rev heads among us, as Nitro Up North brings more than 90 cars to the track to battle it out down the drag strip. New to Supercars this year is The Valley Rodeo, a rodeo-themed space that provides the ultimate pit stop for those seeking a fun and affordable hospitality experience.

However you see your 2024 Supercars experience unfolding, Minister for Major Events Brent Potter says you’re in for a good time.

“The betr Darwin Triple Crown Supercars Indigenous Round is a huge event, and the Nitro Up North program will keep the entertainment going well into the evening including a brand-new Valley Rodeo,” he says.

RossiJohnson

Last year saw more than 42,000 fans flock to the track, so if you want to smell that burning rubber, book your tickets and get set for some super speedy Supercars action.

“The Top Fuel showdown will provide a great opportunity for drags fans to see the fastest cars in the world right here in Darwin. It’s also a fantastic opportunity for local dragsters to race in front of a packed crowd, including friends and family.”

Many a Top Ender has some good memories of hitting up the old heritage-listed Vic Pub in Smith Street Mall. But something’s been brewing that completely reimagines the space, very different to the days of enjoying a cold one and busting a boogie. Cue, The Array.

THE ARRAY IS a non-profit tech school dedicated to providing students with tech skills and knowledge they can use in the ever-changing digital landscape. There’s a variety of courses and programs on offer that focus on technology, with everything from video game development to coding and digital art fundamentals.

Dylan Bennett is the brains behind the project, and says he was inspired after noticing a gap.

“Starting The Array was inspired by my experience in the video game industry and my passion for technology education. I saw a gap in the local education landscape for a dedicated space where students could learn, not just about video games, but also about the broader tech skills that are crucial for the future,” he says.

“I wanted to create a place that nurtures curiosity, creativity, and innovation, helping students to develop the skills they need to

succeed in a rapidly evolving digital world.”

These school holidays, The Array has programmed some educational and entertaining activities, including coding sessions where they can learn the basics of programming, a Minecraft Education Camp, and more. Bennett says the school holiday program is something we can get used to.

“Our school holiday program is designed to be a recurring offering, providing engaging and educational activities for students during each school holiday break,” he says.

“We want to give kids and young adults a fun and productive way to spend their holidays while learning new digital skills and making new friends. It’s part of our commitment to continuous learning and engagement for students of all ages.”

The team also launches its brandnew co-working space this month,

giving tech enthusiasts, freelancers, and entrepreneurs the chance to work in a vibrant and collaborative environment.

“We’re offering a June special for people to come and try one week free. It’s all about fostering a community of like-minded individuals who are passionate about technology, creativity, and innovation,” Bennett says.

Are you a young adult? Do you have young ones with an interest in the world of tech and gaming?

See yourself working alongside like-minded peeps? You know where to go.

FESTIVALS

Paint The Town RAINBOW

Darwin Pride is back, baby. From songstress Ricki-Lee headlining the major Music Festival to a family fun day, comedy show, bush foods feast and more, this year’s program promises to have something for everyone!

THE THEME FOR DP24 is 'celebrating the differences that connect us'. Dr Sean Taylor is Chair of Top End Pride, and hopes the festival unites people across the board.

"I want the LGBTQIASB+ community, First Nations community, the multicultural community and the general community to celebrate the differences that connect us and embrace that difference ... to come together and walk as one.”

Darwin is home to many proud LGBTQIA, Sistergirl, Brotherboy+ communities with long histories. In the face of struggles and hardships, we've seen the strength in coming together to love, support and acknowledge who we are, where we've been, and where we're going.

Ben Tyler is a proud Bininj man from Kakadu and the founder of Kakadu Kitchen. This year, he's organised an Indigenous culinary event at The Last Supper. For Tyler, Pride signifies many things.

"Pride means being seen in our community, celebrating together, and bringing our diversity and our different cultures together under the umbrella of Pride. It’s about better understanding what issues we face, having a voice and having the support of our community."

Drew Tweddle from Darwin Pride says an integral part of any Pride Festival is highlighting the issues that communities face.

"I think Pride is just as important now as it was. Throughout the years,

WILD NORTH Comic Con

there's been different fights we've had to navigate as a community. At the moment, it's really about visibility, it's about safety, and it's about celebration.”

The program boasts an impressive array of events and artists including a cabaret night, sports events, and an inaugural film festival at the Deckchair Cinema.

On Saturday, there’s a hive of activity at the Waterfront. The morning begins with a series of Pride forums and wellness workshops, before the massive Pride Parade leads you straight to the Darwin Pride Music Festival at Fort Hill Parklands. The stellar line-up includes local and interstate DJs, drag artists, and the dazzling headliner Ricki-Lee.

"I’m so excited! I know how much Pride events mean to the community, so I always go above and beyond to put on an amazing show,” she says.

"I think it’s so important to celebrate how far we’ve come, and for there to be a safe and fabulous place for people to express themselves unapologetically. Visibility is so important, so celebrating a community that has been marginalised for so long is so powerful."

Darwin Pride Festival runs across four days, with satellite events on either side. In mid-June, Katherine also hosts the annual Katherine Pride Festival, packed with an awesome line-up of events and activities for the whole community to enjoy. Make sure you come along and truly celebrate all the differences that connect us with Pride.

REMEMBER THE DAYS when being called a geek may have been intended as an insult? These days, you can proudly wear it like a badge of honour. After a hugely successful inaugural event in 2023, Wild North Comic Con – the first festival in the Territory dedicated to the art of comics – makes a triumphant return.

Embrace geek culture with comics and graphic novels that showcase original art by local and international artists, writers, and illustrators. Facilitated by not-forprofit arts organisation Wild North Arts Inc., the festival’s Creative Director Tim Parish says the event’s expanded in 2024 after a ripper first year.

“The first Wild North Comic Con … was a huge success, with dozens of artists involved and hundreds of patrons that filled the venue all day,” he says.

“This year, we’ve moved into the city and expanded our venue so

we can host more artists, comic and zine makers in the Artist Alley, an art exhibition, and animation screenings.”

This year’s festival has grown from a six-hour event in 2023 to a threeday festival in bigger digs at Bustard Town, and in very handy timing, it also aligns with the school holidays.

“This free event is a great activity for the school holidays with something for the whole family, with cosplay, animation screenings, an art exhibition, a cosplay comp, guest speakers and live music performances,” Parish says.

“There will be a live comic painting and a virtual reality experience, photo booth, and more. Our venue – Bustard Town in the CBD – has wood-fired pizzas, bakery food and drinks available all day.”

There’s so much on offer in the 2024 program, with satellite events happening over the course of the three days, the main event

out on the Saturday. Parish says he’s particularly excited about showcasing the creatives behind the work.

“[I’m really looking forward to] our series of talks with local and international creators, including the BLAK POWER guest panel on First Nations superheroes, comic creators featuring Scott Wilson, creator of the Indigiverse, and local artist Jonathon Saunders,” he says.

“There’s a live comic reading and musical performance by Joshua Santospirito, exploring the migration story of his new autobiographical comic, The Islands Where We Left Our Ancestors.”

So, head on down to Bustard Town and get your geek on.

PERFORMING ARTS

The Other Side of Me

THE NT DANCE Company tour their evocative dance work to Alice Springs, exploring who gets to tell the other side of history.

How can art tell unspeakable stories? This is one question that sparked the creation of The Other Side of Me, a powerful dance production telling a real-life story of Australia’s Stolen Generation.

Choreographed by renowned Larrakia artistic director and choreographer Gary Lang, the piece was inspired by letters written by a First Nations man in prison in the UK.

“Two young boys were taken from Katherine and ended up in Alice Springs orphanage in the 60s. A couple, a husband and wife, were looking for children to adopt. Within a week, the children were adopted and taken to a small hamlet in the

momenta

Sydney Dance Company returns to the Darwin Entertainment Centre stage with momenta – the latest work by Choreographer and Artistic Director, Rafael Bonachela.

FROM THE MOST tender exchanges to an intense physical storm, audiences bear witness to an extraordinary force of movement, striking individuality and powerful unity, escalating to a joyous release.

"momenta is a testament to the ephemeral yet profound connections that weave through all of our lives. From the most

countryside in England,” Lang says.

The piece follows the oldest brother’s journey as he grapples with his identity. In a powerful duet, two dancers portray his two sides and evoke the ongoing resonances of his story of disconnection.

“You can imagine the anguish of not knowing, and wanting to know, and the frustration and the anger. You see how young kids disengage. What is it that sets them off? What is the true cause that sets them off?,” Lang says.

"The piece is about the conversations, the mental anguish, of his journey.”

While in prison, the young man became pen pals with British writer and academic Dr Laura Fish. Following his death, she searched for years to find the right way to tell his story.

tender exchanges to an intense physical storm, the dancers traverse the beauty and complexity of the human experience,” Bonachela says.

“It's a deeply personal exploration, as we invite audiences to join us on a journey that speaks to the very essence of what it means to be alive, where pure movement

becomes a language of connection and expression.”

Sydney Dance Company is always a hit with the local crowd, and nationally and internationally, with many enthralled by their triple-bill performance of Ascent in 2023 as some of the country’s most mesmerising and able-bodied dancers defied physical limitations.

Riley Fitzgerald has been dancing with the company since 2019 and says it’s a special family to be part of.

“Being a company member has always been a dream of mine, ever since high school, actually. Getting to be part of a company where I admired so many of the dancers, and I watched so many of them growing up, it is always a special place.”

momenta is Bonachela’s newest full-length work since Impermanence in 2020, one Fitzgerald says is very special.

“For me, it’s quite a significant piece because it’s been a few years since Raf’s created a full-length project like this,” he says.

Confirming a partnership with the NT Dance Company, his story could return to the NT and take shape in the hands of a First Nations creative team.

“The story is not meant to make people feel guilty. It’s an Australian story, it’s a First Nations story, it’s our story. This is what’s happened.”

An evocative, mesmerising performance, the 45-minute piece is followed by a Q&A with the creatives.

“Don’t come with preconceived ideas, come for the dance and find your story.”

“The work speaks to the cosmic, and momenta is the plural of the word momentum, it’s the quantity of motion of the moving body, so we’re delving into all of these ideas of gravity and velocity and things, how we can really embody these ideas physically … it really sets up a universe where I think we can all really respond intuitively and with impulse, and a great deal of energy, which is really exciting I think.”

This combination of Bonachela’s signature choreographic style, Nick Wales’ haunting soundscapes, Elizabeth Gadsby’s incredible set design and Damien Cooper’s striking lighting, results in a performance sure to leave audiences in awe.

For all involved, on stage and in seats, momenta invites you to rejoice in the beauty and fragility of our shared humanity.

Teardrops on My Dildo

IF THE TITLE Teardrops on My Dildo sets off a stirring giggle or sounds like the right combination for a belly laugh (or cry), then a comedy evening with Vanessa Larry Mitchell might be just what you need.

Mitchell shares her stories with the right amount of spice and sass. No topic is off the table, covering the rawness of life’s stages, from dating disasters and sex life secrets to motherhood.

“When I wrote the show, it was never supposed to have any meaning behind it. It was just supposed to be funny. And then as I started performing, there were a lot of people who would thank me for helping them feel free and kind of feel validated with their own dating lives, being single women or sexually adventurous,” Mitchell says.

“It’s turns out that it’s all ages as well. I have people in their 70s or even their 80s telling me ‘oh, that’s so relatable’ … Everyone is a lot

wilder than we think.”

While some people are shocked at the jokes on the surface, Mitchell says when they think about it and realise, they’ve done that or their friend has done that, it’s not that big of a deal.

Mitchell revels in connecting with her audience in a way that allows people to feel free and let go of everyday life's trials and tribulations.

“It’s really beautiful to hear that people connect in a way that they actually feel changed or a little bit freer … and that’s really special that it’s happened naturally,” she says.

“I like people completely letting go. People laughing so hard that they’ve forgotten about the world outside.”

The jokes aren't just for women either, with Mitchell finding that more men are heading to her shows.

“People often know if they’re going to like the show or not just based on the title,” she says.

This will be her second performance in Darwin, this time at the Darwin Entertainment Centre after performing at the Darwin Fringe Festival two years ago.

“I love going to Darwin and to regional places as they’re probably more my people,” she says.

So, go along to the show, strap yourselves in for the ride. Mitchell’s advice?

“Leave your morals at the door.”

REVERBERATIONS

Lovers of the written and spoken word are in for a treat this month, as the NT Writers Festival (NTWF) returns to Larrakia Country with a huge four-day program centred around the 2024 theme ‘reverberations’.

Established in 1999, the NTWF has grown over the years to deliver an annual program complete with thought-provoking discussions, immersive events and powerful performances that celebrate language, culture and story shaped by place.

Held annually, the festival alternates between Darwin and Alice Springs, giving folks across the Territory the chance to engage with the festival and immerse themselves in the unique landscapes, culture and history on which the festival is delivered. This year is Darwin’s turn, as NTWF returns to the gorgeous seaside setting on the lawns of the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT).

The 2024 theme allows writers and audiences to consider the impacts of their actions on others and to reflect upon their ongoing consequences. It invites participants to view the world relationally, and to understand how things may be interconnected. It also means listening to the echoes of the past to help imagine a better future.

Festival Director Rita Horanyi says the theme offers a chance to both reflect and move forward.

“This year’s festival theme is a timely one, asking us to pay

attention to the reverberations of the past, thereby helping us to understand the present moment,” she says.

“Writers’ festivals are places where words reverberate – ideas are exchanged, stories are shared, perspectives aired. The words we hear at a writers’ festival can echo in our minds long after the sessions have ended, connecting and inspiring us.”

The 2024 program was developed with assistance from NTWF Advisory Committee members made up of Marie Munkara, Mililma May, Sally Bothroyd, Penny Drysdale, Kylie Stevenson, Tisha Tejaya, and Bernadette Ryan.

Events this year are curated to explore both collective and personal memories from the past. Historians and artists come together at Fannie Bay Gaol to share some of the stories that comprise the history of the iconic site, whilst local historians Richard Creswick and Derek Pugh OAM are joined by Jared Archibald, Curator of Territory History at MAGNT, to discuss their new oral history, Tracy – 50 Years, 50 Stories, ahead of the 50th anniversary of Cyclone Tracy in December.

As you recognise the past, you’re also invited to consider the future. Participate in panels that address the future of storytelling and how

CARNIVAL of the ANIMALS

Darwin City Brass Band returns with a sweet seaside community concert at Sunset Park in Nightcliff, celebrating all creatures great and small.

Iconic MUSIC

THIS SPECIAL FREE event features Angie Sublime as ringmaster, Rachel Wharam on vocals, plus circus tricks from the Amazing Miss Deb. City of Darwin's Animal Education Team is also coming to the party, as well as RSPCA Northern Territory with all sorts of goodies and information.

The fun’s backed by the sounds of the much-loved Darwin City Brass Band – this time, under the baton of Musical Director Jack Risos in

his first Dry season concert with the band. He says he’s happy to be at the helm of such a cherished part of Darwin’s history.

“I feel great about leading Darwin City Brass Band as Musical Director. It's wonderful to conduct such a community-focused group filled with friendly and dedicated people,” he says.

“Darwin City Brass Band holds a lot of meaning for the Darwin

Get ready, music lovers, as the Darwin Symphony Orchestra (DSO) returns to the iconic George Brown Botanic Gardens with their huge Amphitheatre spectacular, Iconic.

THIS LARGE-SCALE performance by Darwin’s beloved orchestra is always a hit with the masses, as tunes a lot of us know and love are given the classical treatment.

This year’s presentation of Iconic features the DSO, made up of volunteer musicians, and a front band of amazing local musicians. You could say it’s a bit of a flex on Territory talent, because boy, oh boy, do we have it in spades.

Pull up a patch of grass or pop on

those dancing shoes for a boogie, as an electrifying anthology of incredible hits blast out into the palm trees. DSO Artistic Director and Chief Conductor Jon Tooby says the epic amphitheatre concert is always a hit, which saw audiences lining up all the way to Mindil Beach last year.

“I’m a little bit nervous this year, after last year, because we will almost certainly reach capacity. We’re putting in extra security … to manage the crowd, because last

community. As a longstanding part of the city's cultural fabric for over a century, it’s been entertaining the people of Darwin for generations, which is a wonderful history.

Additionally, it nurtures young local musicians, ensuring continuity for the future.

“Our repertoire is diverse, ranging from jazz and pop classics to show tunes, original pieces, and classical favourites. We aim to cater to a wide audience with eminently listenable music.”

Bring along a chair or picnic rug, fill those bellies with delish bites from local food vans or bring along your own picnic, and soak up the glorious sunset in one of the sweetest settings in Darwin.

year we were a bit overwhelmed, it was huge, it will just help get people through a little more smoothly,” he says.

“I think it says a lot about the people of Darwin, actually. It’s such a unique community in that way. I see it in other concerts we do as well, the capita buy-in for culture and the arts generally speaking is huge, and of course this event has got kind of a momentum now that grows and grows, it’s really fun.

“We’ve taken great pride in the product that we create, and because we’ve got a band that’s local, directed by Michael Clark, they’ve really taken ownership of it. There’s so much care taken in how we curate it, and all the transitions, and I think that Darwin Symphony Orchestra has really claimed it as our event and that’s really tangible from the audience.”

Somehow, they’ve worked down a list of 100 songs to 20. From Elvis to Aretha, Tina Turner to Adele, AC/DC to Beyoncé, Iconic brings together the sounds of music legends by local music legends. Tooby says he’s particularly excited for a couple of them.

“We’re doing a song that I think is going to be amazing, for the

orchestra, and that’s Toxic by Britney Spears. And my own personal favourite is Cashmere by Led Zeppelin … There’s a great version of their last performance at Royal Albert Hall, and I just thought, we can do that!”

In a DSO Amphitheatre show first, there’s a bunch of VIP tickets up for grabs, which includes priority access, designated seating, two drinks and light refreshments, plus access to a private bar. Swish.

But of course, no matter where you settle in the beautiful tropical space, on your own comfy picnic blankets and chairs, you’ll hear and feel the electric vibes of the orchestra emanating from the stage.

With food trucks and bars on hand to quench your thirst and fill your tums, it’s a sweet way to spend an eve in the Top End’s blissful Dry season. Iconic sounds about right.

FOLKSTARS AND GOLDEN GUITARS

in The Red Centre

The Top Half Folk Festival returns for its 52nd year, offering festival lovers the chance to get out to Ross River Resort for three folk-filled days of music, workshops and camping.

GET READY TO bush dance, jig and jam the night away at the Top Half Folk Festival – the perfect opportunity to experience the eclectic and diverse folk scene of Central Australia, with a program boasting over 30 artists, workshops, jam sessions and children’s activities.

This year’s line-up is put together by Alice Springs Folk Club President Gleny Rae, working alongside none other than Festival Patron Ted Egan AO. With a boom in Folk Club activities popping up around Mparntwe/Alice Springs of late, the 2024 festival is set to be the biggest so far. Its legacy lies in the passionate artists behind the scenes and the enduring culture of Arrernte land.

“The mob here have been making music and telling stories for 60,000 years! It has been a rich seam of folk traditions in the postcolonial prism since the 70s, when the first festival was held,” says Rae.

Headline acts include triple Golden Guitar winners Felicity Urquhart and The Waifs’ Josh Cunningham, and dynamic performance duo Mic Conway and Robbie Long.

“Mic Conway is an absolute living legend, from his days on Countdown with The Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band to The National Junk Band, and now his wonderful vaudevillian collaboration with another guitar maestro, Robbie Long.”

Not to be missed is the vast homegrown talent on show. The local line-up promises toe-tapping trad folk, as well as stunning new arrangements.

“We are super excited to present the incredible baritone singer Archer – featured in 2020 film I'm Wanita – in collaboration with the Alice Springs World Chamber Orchestra … There will be traditional folk, lots of singalongs and sessions, plus contemporary music from local legends like Katie Harder and Wilful Mischief,” says Rae.

Other rising NT stars on the bill include folk-pop sensation The Wanted Gems, and enchanting emerging ensembles Moongaze, Siren Song, and Anchor and Kite.

An activity-packed adventure, this festival is a playground of family fun. Kids can get crafty making their own instruments, and workshops in singing and songwriting are open to

all ages. Jump onstage for folkie-oke – aka folk karaoke – or grab your teammates for the Folk Quiz. There’s a space for everyone at this unique festival.

“We have such a diverse and creative community here, and we hope to present a good cross section of this with our programming. Saturday night features a Queer as Folk Cabaret to bring a focus onto the LGBTQIA+ proponents of folk music, there is a youth showcase for emerging young performers, and a First Nations space to sit down, listen and learn,” says Rae.

In the grand tradition of folk festivals, camp for the weekend and don’t forget your instruments! This year’s outstanding program is sure to convert any folk-sceptics out there – they’ll be singing a different tune in no time.

GERMAN Masters

German composers, Bruckner, Brahms and Beethoven, are considered some of the greatest composers of all time. This month, you're invited to bask in the musical brilliance of German Masters, presented by Darwin's premier classical choir Vocalective.

IN A PERFORMANCE conducted by Creative Director, Michael Loughlin, Vocalective showcases the choral works of these 19th Century greats, accompanied by a chamber orchestra.

"These European composers are the ones who have helped create this Western music culture. People like Beethoven and Brahms are very well-known. They're two of the most revered figures in the history of Western music with the works that they've produced,” he says.

Best known for his symphonies, the choir also marks Anton Bruckner’s 200th birthday by performing some of his small-scale works.

"His secular songs are a revelation – captivating melodies with ever-changing harmonies. The Ave Maria is one of his best-known shorter works for an unaccompanied choir. Bruckner's creativity is stunning," Loughlin says.

Classical music enthusiasts can also look forward to hearing Johannes Brahms’ poetic piece, Song of Destiny. Another highlight is undoubtedly Ludwig Van Beethoven's emotionally rich composition Mass in C Major, first performed in 1807.

"I love the interplay between the soloists and the choir and the choral writing, which is straightforward but effective in expressing the mood of the text," says Loughlin.

Vocalective is comprised of 30 skilled Darwin-based singers with a love of classical music. If you've never had the opportunity to see them perform before, this is a perfect time to experience the choir in full force.

"The people who come to our concerts enjoy hearing music that's not necessarily performed frequently in Darwin. Choir music, especially classical choir music, is not performed very much apart from what our group does. So, I think the audiences appreciate it, especially those with an interest in classical music."

In the past, Vocalective has performed music from the French Masters, and look forward to performing compositions from Italy, England and Australia in the future.

For now, bask in the sublime sounds of the German Masters in a night of music, celebration, and classical appreciation.
