ello! I’m so happy, honoured and excited to sit here at my new desk, in a new building, at my old workplace, in the company of the delightful Off The Leash team. For those who don’t know me, I previously worked at OTL for a couple of years from early 2015.

This organisation has always held a very special place in my heart and I’m absolutely thrilled to be back on the team.

Admittedly, the past month hasn’t been all peaches and cream… My family and I suffered a devastating blow after the passing of my dear brother, Dan, at the beginning of May. But with the kindness and dedication of the amazing OTL team, a wonderfully supportive board and treasured friends, we’ve delivered to your hot little hands the June edition; a special one as my first back on the team and done with my brother on my mind at every moment. I hope you enjoy it.

An airport may not be the first thing that springs to mind when considering an artist in residency program, but Darwin International Airport (DIA) is not your traditional airport.

n 2018, DIA introduced The Green Room – a tropical oasis, inspired by the nostalgia of Hotel Darwin’s infamous bar – to showcase the sights, sounds and skills of Northern Territory creatives. This year, The Green Room returns with an even bigger program and, first the first time, an artist in residence program.

Through a public call-out and application process, Off The Leash’s very own multi-talented journalist, Tamara Howie, was selected as the first cab off the rank. Her craft? Capturing the stories and portraits of those in transit through Darwin Airport.

“There were lots of different reasons why I was really interested in this residency. I love airports and people watching, and I’m really interested in the idea of individual stories in shared spaces. Airports are unique in that all different types of people are thrown together for the same reasons – they’re all going somewhere or dropping off or collecting someone – but their motivations are all so vastly different,” said Howie.

Competition was tough to say the least, DIA receiving a large number of applications for the residency. Howie’s experience as a visual artist, writer and arts professional, together with her plan to engage with DIA visitors, particularly sparked the interest of the selection panel.

DIA’s Community Engagement and Green Room Manager Claire Punch says Howie’s submission stood out because of her individuality, professionalism and creativity, and the strong connection to the space.

“The concept of recording stories drawn from Territorians, and others passing through the terminal, was an idea the selection panel felt would resonate with the audience and the arts community. The NT is such a richly diverse and inspiring place, brimming with unique characters and

fascinating storytelling. We felt the idea of capturing this – and hopefully being able to share this with our passengers at some stage – would be interesting, insightful and most importantly, create a rich narrative and capture a sense of place of the Northern Territory,” Punch says.

“For many locals, Darwin Airport represents a time of adventure, change, a feeling of arriving home or visiting a new and unknown land. For those seduced by the NT who stay, these memories grow to include the arrival and departure of loved ones, an escape route to holiday destinations, and a pathway to long-lost worlds very different to life in the NT – a gateway to another world.”

Howie will spend the next few weeks trawling the terminal, observing travellers and chatting to them about their transit tales, the end result an exhibition of sorts within the terminal. But her focus is not just limited to travellers – Howie invites anyone at the airport to join her for a ‘yarn’, as tales at the airport extend beyond airplane ticket holders.

“I’m a writer so I wanted to do something written but with some sort of visual element – but I wanted to talk to people without having camera in their face… I’m still not quite sure what the final products will look like, but I like the idea of something ‘podcasty’ – something people can travel with,” Howie says.

“I’ve always been interested in people stories – the different lives they lead – especially folks in Darwin. Most people in Darwin have been to the airport at one point or another – it’s one of the places we’ve all crossed paths at some point.”

Greatness Discover the weird, wild and wacky world of Darwin Fringe Festival with the official 2019 program launch at Mayfair Gallery.

With more than 100 shows on offer, from participatory dance flash mobs to comedy to burlesque to theatre, there’s something to satiate true Fringe fanatics and lovers of art.

Darwin Fringe Festival Co-director Hannah Illingworth says the 2019 program showcases the talents of locals, and is something Darwinites and Territorians can be proud of.

“The program looks so juicy! There are heaps of unique and quirky voices that I hope Territorians will feel celebrated by. It’s a bit cheeky and completely community-orientated,” she says.

Tamara Howie has already met a swag of colourful characters, from musicians to miners, whale divers to comedians. Howie shares a glimpse into her artist in residence at Darwin International Airport.

If you asked me to describe any airport in the world, all I could tell you is the quickest route to get out of Melbourne Tullamarine Airport. And that the border security staff at Heathrow are… thorough.

It’s the same deal for most people I’ve spoken to. They remember the experience, but not the place – except if you’ve ever spent any time at Darwin International Airport.

“We’ve got some real weird stuff that I think will bring people out of their comfort zones, but we have been working super hard to assure we continue to create a totally safe space for artists and audiences.

There’ll be so many fun events where you can just have a boogie and a bevvy.”

One of my favourite stories I’ve been told while yarning with travellers and locals about life and airports was from my good mate, Hayley Sorensen.

“When I lived in Timor a few years ago, I hated that carpet,” she says.

“It always reminded me of stupid o’clock flights. The way the curfew worked back then, I’d arrive in Darwin at midnight and have to stay around until 6am. I’d spend hours sleeping in a corner – on my bag – in that bloody cold airport on that goddamn lily pad carpet.

“It also meant I was going back home to Timor – where there was no cheese, and where monkeys would chase you down the street, and where you couldn’t swim in the ocean because it was full of crocodiles and rubbish, all the while knowing I’d have to go back to work and sit on a plastic chair in an office with no air-con, sweating my t-ts off.

“Here I am living in Darwin. These days, I wait at that airport at the ‘red-eye’ hour for my friends to land for a holiday. I look at the carpet now and think ‘this is happy carpet, now, bringing my friends for a holiday.’

Dance teacher Jenelle Saunders says it’s a great way to let off some steam while having some fun.

“We’ll be channelling some of George Michael’s persona and we’ve got some of his very iconic tracks,” she says.

“You can come and learn a separate sequence in each workshop, and

by the end, you’ll have this nice string of dance sequences. So it doesn’t matter if you can’t make it to all four – it’s just a great vibe and really fun.”

Our World, Our Community MERREPEN ARTS AND MUSIC FESTIVAL is held annually in the welcoming community of Nauiyu, located 240 kilometres south-west of Darwin. Originally large-format, organisers scaled down the festival to increase the focus on community.

Merrepen Arts Manager Cathy Laudenbach says this free, family-friendly event presents the opportunity to embrace the Nauiyu community.

“This event is important to bring positive attention to this creative and dynamic community, and for visitors to be able to see first-hand the art and culture of the region,” she says.

“It really is a festival for everyone.”

There is so much packed in to two days including food and art stalls, cultural tours, ceramic pot decorating with well-known ceramic artist Heidi Strachan, a jumping castle, music performances including local band Niniuch, and painting workshops – you can even print your own tea towel! The Merrepen Gallery has specials running throughout the weekend, including 25 per cent off all screen-printed fabric.

Free camping is available but bookings are essential. So head down to Daly and experience Nauiyu.

GRAB THE KIDS AND HIT THE ROAD TO BORROLOOLA for one of the Territory’s most unique Indigenous festivals.

This year’s Malandarri Festival features a range of performances from dance groups hailing from right across the Pacific, including Borroloola clan groups Yanyuwa (Ngardiji Dancers), Garrwa (Wandangula and Blind Mermaid Dancers) and Mara Dancers, The White Cockatoo Performing Group and Polynesian dance group, Nuholani.

Festival director Marlene Timothy says it’s a special opportunity to see the diversity of dance from the region, and a great family event.

“I don’t think there’s any other festival like it in the Territory – it’s very unique. There is a real sense of intimacy. It’s not a huge-scale event so you feel really welcomed as an audience member, and the size means it’s quite safe for families and a relaxed vibe.”

The festival is a calendar highlight for locals and a chance to celebrate and bring positivity for residents.

Attendees are treated to a pop-up exhibition by local artists, produced in a workshop under the guidance of photographer Benjamin Warlngundu Bayliss. There are family fun activities including a jumping castle, face painting, dance workshops and soccer, and a reading space to share quiet time for parents and carers with babies and toddlers.

If you’re heading down for the first time, Timothy has some hot tips.

BARUNGA FESTIVAL’S MUSIC LINE-UP is notorious for drawing crowds, but two other major elements that make up the festivities are the sports and cultural programs. They present the opportunity for visitors from neighbouring communities, to come together and share ideas, knowledge and stories.

Festival co-ordinator Brad Firebrace says there is a focus this year to bring the balance back between the three prongs of the festival.

“The music program has out-balanced the other elements so we’re really concentrating on the cultural side of things this year,” he says.

Dancers from Ngukurr, Groote and as far as Derby are headed to the festival this year, and rangers from all over Arnhem Land will gather to share their knowledge about caring for country and to give insight on how they look after it.

“We’re also working with the Barunga kids to open the Festival with their dance,” Firebrace says.

“It’s really important to not only keep the traditions and culture alive for Aboriginal Australia, but to recognise the festival as the perfect stage for these communities to share their song and dances for people outside of the Territory.

THIS MUCH-LOVED ANNUAL celebration of Greek culture has grown so big, one weekend simply can’t contain it. This year, Glenti kicks off on Sat 1 June with a week of events in the lead up to the delicious Esplanade take-over.

Greek Community NT president Nick Poniris says demand from interstate visitors sparked the idea to hold events the week prior.

“Visitors come up early and often ask us if there’s anything happening during the week,” he says.

“It prompted the idea – why not make a week of Glenti? We started it last year but this year we’ve taken it to a whole new level.”

It all kicks off with Romiosini and Beyond, a concert celebrating the music of Mikis Theodorakis, followed by a week of films for the Greek Film Festival.

With all of this excitement going on, there’s also plenty happening behind closed doors… Locals start prepping the food for the main event well before the marquees are put up. All of the usual (delicious) suspects are on the menu with souvla, yiros, octopus, spanakopita, Greek sweets and cakes. Hungry yet?

And, as expected, the music program is a solid 10 with the likes of Wagilak and the Australia Art Orchestra, Mambali Band, Nabarlek Band, and family favourite Justine Clarke. with General Manager James Parker

Previously Deckie Ops Manager, James Parker was appointed General Manager after his predecessor Alice left to travel the world.

We caught up with him for a chat.

Was GM a role you thought you'd ever end up in?

It’s a role that I thought would be fantastic, but I didn’t know if I would ever get the job. It’s such a cool place to work – the cinema is an awesome place, a not-for-profit that really exists for its members. It’s a privilege to be able to be General Manager, I really love it! Of course, we miss having Alice around.

There have been big changes at the Deckie over the past couple of years, with the construction of the new deck as well as Cyclone Marcus wreaking havoc. Any other big changes you can tell us about?

The Deckie is constantly evolving.

The way the cinema currently is is awesome, but it continues to change as time passes. At some point down the road we’ll upgrade the projector, but structurally, the cinema set up is going well and I’m going work hard to look after it. We try to identify any issues as we go;

for example, queuing for food on busy nights has led to the extension of the caterer’s area, which has worked out really well. There’s a mahogany bench linking this space to the deck, which is quite poetic as it’s made from a tree that fell during Marcus.

How is the 2019 program shaping up so far?

Program One has just ended and Program Two looks fantastic! It’s really difficult to program a cinema that screens one film per night, as it’s a hard decision to decide what makes the cut. Everyone wants to see something different, and we like to surprise and challenge the audience with films they probably should see. The program committee do a fantastic job and have their fingers on pulse within the industry – in a way, they are responsible for the success of the cinema.

Random question – tell us something we don’t know about you!

Hmm, something people don’t know about me. How should I answer that… I want to make myself sound good but it’s tricky. I’m a really keen rock climber and have travelled around Australia, UK and Europe. Australia really is the perfect place for rock climbing – dry days, cold nights for camping and lots of incredible remote locations.

There are a lot of options out there these days, but it’s hard to know where to start. Two self-published authors – who went down two very different paths – are coming together for an informal Q&A session so you can pick their brains.

Sean Guy published physical copies of his novel Malediction: The Cursed Play. Mel A Rowe embraced the new route many authors are going down – the digital world. We had a chat with them about their different approaches.

What self-publishing format have you used and why?

SG: Malediction: The Cursed Play is primarily self-published in paperback through CDU UniPrint. I used this format because I’m a big fan of books that I can hold – which I suppose makes me a bit of an “old-school” book guy.

MR: Publishing is all about offering the reader choices. It’s why I use various e-book formats tailored for international online retailers, aggregators, libraries – including print on demand (POD) – specifically geared for the global marketplace.

What do you wish you knew before you began the self-publishing process?

SG: I’m almost embarrassed to say that I have never read a digital book. I realise how many advantages there are to e-books but working in a bookshop (and constantly visiting libraries) I have never found Desert Dash any obstacles to getting print books

COOK GROWING & UNDERSTANDING LOCAL PRODUCE

Lou Benton has had many interesting adventures and culinary experiences since she left New Zealand to explore different parts of the world. She spent six years in the UK and eight years in Thailand, working and travelling.

It was in Thailand that she developed her passion for Thai food with its plethora of wonderful street stalls, restaurants and tantalising food, consumed with delight on a daily basis. She also heard many stories about tropical life in Darwin and, in particular, the markets where Asia meets the West through a variety of fresh food and produce, such as at Rapid Creek. Seduced by the notion of a new place, Benton came to Darwin where it has happily been her home for many years. She loves the community life, tropical

climate and spends time creating beautiful art and jewellery which she sells at various markets.

Benton's passion for fresh produce has led her to use as many local fresh ingredients as possible, and most recently, she’s taken on a packaging-free challenge. She recently cooked Thai-inspired dishes at her house at a GULP gathering where almost all produce came from her garden or the Rapid Creek markets. She even made her own fresh coconut cream! Her recipes were most delicious and filled with thought.

Long eggplants easily can be grown all year in Darwin, as well as chillies, garlic chives, Thai Basil and coconuts.

Thai Eggplant

by Lou Benton 2 handfuls Thai basil 5 red chillies cut lengthways 1 handful shallots 1 handful garlic chives or 3 garlic cloves chopped Large bowl of roughly chopped eggplant 2 tbsp coconut cream 1 tbsp coconut sugar Coconut oil Soy sauce/ salt Method Salt or add soy sauce to the chopped eggplant generously to reduce bitterness while the rest of the ingredients are prepared.

Heat a generous amount of coconut oil until fairly hot. Add chopped eggplant and fry until starting to char. Remove eggplant.

Gently sauté a handful of bruised shallots, five chillies cut lengthways, a bunch of chopped garlic chives or chopped garlic cloves, a handful of sweet leaf (remove from stalks) and two handfuls of basil. Add salt to taste, two

Don’t underestimate how thirsty you’ll be…

One bottle of wine is never going to be enough and, if you don’t finish a second, you can take it home.

Keep in mind your friends may under-cater on the wine front, so a spare bottle won’t go astray.

Don’t buy everything new.

There are so many good op shops and second-hand stores that specifically target white in the lead up to the event. You don’t have to spend a lot of money.

Bring items that have a multi-use.

If you have a container for food, use it for ice (which is provided) once it’s empty.

Do a practice run.

It helped my group nail it the first time we went, and we found out what works and what doesn’t work.

Plus, it was a fun night out – any excuse for a night with good food and wine.

IT’S TIME TO MAKE YOUR ART NOT-SO-SECRET... The Darwin Fringe Festival has revived its Secret Art exhibition for emerging artists aged 14-25. It’s a chance for the young creatives of the Territory to share their latest creations, or create something new to the theme ‘pop culture’.

“I don’t think emerging artists get opportunities like this very often,” she says.

“I hope the theme will be inspiring – especially for the age group. It’s the time when you’re most interested in pop culture and I think it should inspire some interesting work.”

The exhibition will be held at Radio Gnome Records in Air Raid Arcade and participants will also learn tricks of the trade about hanging work from local artist Matthew Van Roden.

Producer and co-owner of Radio Gnome Records Roxanne Voulanas says she’s excited to see what young artists are up to behind closed doors.

The theme is non-compulsory, so if you’ve been toiling away on some work or have a piece you’re proud of that you’d like to share with the world, jump on board and register.

What’s the theme for the June?

The theme is Tropical Darwin Vibes.

I chose this theme because what better spot than by the beach to welcome the Dry? I really want our beautiful beaches and breath-taking sunsets to do the talking for.

By choosing this theme, I think we’re really highlighting the best of Darwin.

What have been the most helpful things you’ve learnt?

I was very nervous heading into the Sounds@Sunset program as I wasn’t sure what to expect from it or what our roles would be.

Who’s on the line-up?

We have two amazing local solo acts, Kyle Maher and Bella Maree, and a band from Darwin High School, Open Scars.

I’m really excited to have such amazing local talent on board. All of the artists have beautiful sounds and are a great representation of Darwin’s chilled-out vibe.

Why did you get involved with the Sounds@Sunset Project?

I have always loved working in events, but have usually been front-of-house – I wanted to be more involved on the producing

The talented drama students from Darwin Middle School take to the stage this month for their highly anticipated 2019 production, Mirror Image.

Drama teacher, and the play’s director, Courts White says although a comedy, Mirror Image comes with valuable life lessons for the students and audience members.

“Mirror Image looks at fairy tales versus reality. In fairy tales, everything is predictable and predetermined, and characters are not the masters of their destinies.

In reality, the princesses realise they can’t just wait around for a prince to come and save them – if they want something, they need to go out and get it for themselves,” she says.

“As funny as the storyline is, the students learn from it. There are huge underlying themes of equality, and the important message that you are master of your own life – you can be what you want and choose if you work for it.”

CHRIS LILLEY’S NEW SERIES, Lunatics, has been released to mixed reviews. In my opinion, Lunatics is sadly a tired and ultimately frustrating collection of predictably quirky characters, lacking the intelligence of Lilley’s earlier work. The media release proclaims the characters “teach us that it’s okay to just be you,” this phrasing unfortunate given that Quentin, a toxic real estate agent, labels women disgustingly when they don’t fall for his creepy advances.

Any discussion of Lilley’s work inevitably veers to the question of whether his body of work should be respected or admonished for racism.

We Can be Heroes contained some clever and insightful caricatures, including the satirical portrayal of high school queen bee Ja'mie King.

However, musical theatre enthusiast Ricky Wong’s portrayal of Cathy Freeman in Indigeroo, the Musical,

The Young King Perfumed Pathway considers this generation in a virtual world that threatens the dynamic of real conversations.

Summer Heights High worked successfully because of the quality of Lilley’s observations, the execution of his vision, and the affectionate presentation of the characters and their flaws. However, Lilley’s character Jonah roused significant debate.

Jonah was arguably an empowered anti-authoritarian in the larrikin tradition of Bart Simpson, however, became increasingly nihilistic causing widespread criticism from many for his negative portrayal of the Tongan community.

The questions is, is it acceptable for a white actor to portray a character from a minority group? This is a complex issue. Robin Williams’ improvisations included a cavalcade of ethnicities and genders, as does the work of Sacha Baron Cohen.

Arguably both pass my morality test because Williams treated his characters with warmth and respect, whilst Baron Cohen queries the dominant culture’s response to his characters.

The lingering question is whether Lilley’s characterisations celebrate the characters’ eccentricities or belittle and exploit minorities. Sadly, I feel in recent years the latter is the case.

Sustainable Ceramics IF YOU’RE GOING TO CREATE SOMETHING NEW, it should be useful or beautiful, according to ceramicist Bonnie Hislop. The Brisbane-based artist approaches her creative practice with a sustainable focus.

“Ceramics can last thousands of years if they’re taken care of,” she says.

“We have so many things in the world, and I don’t think we need more things unless they’re useful or beautiful, or both.”

stillnessflow “When people are learning, I find there tends to be an urgency to making – you feel like you need to make as many things as possible.

But I like to encourage a slower pace, and help people think about what they’re making and putting in to the world.

“It’s very important to me to provide an item or experience that has a strong sustainable element, but also allow people to make items that they could use in their every day life.”

This approach flows in her workshops, including the two she will be running for Accomplice in Darwin this month.

Hislop’s Darwin workshops will focus on hand-building techniques and functional sculpture, and her classes often attract a diverse, yet like-minded, group of humans.

“I like to encourage mindful making practices,” she says.

“There’s not a particular demographic of workshop attendants, it’s

more of a mindset,” she says.

“It’s people who want to have a creative outlet or are passionate about increasing their ethical and sustainable practices, and people who want to have a nice outing that doesn’t revolve around food or drinking.”

AMELIA LUSCOMBE AND JOCELYN TRIBE will undertake a one-month collaborative studio residency exploring the themes of therapeutic mark-making and intuitive drawing. Through their creative practices, the artists have discovered common thematic threads; the residency project is an opportunity for a conversation between these two artists practices to unfold – a conversation initiated from each artist discovering a need to fulfill self-enquiry and wellbeing through art.

Desert Satellites

THIS EXHIBITION OF PRINTS and multimedia explores and celebrates the migratory shorebirds that visit Australia during the northern hemispherical winter. Overwintering records not only the 26 species, but also their habitat and threats they face whilst overwintering in Australia.

This is a group exhibition of artworks from Tennant Creek artists around the Barkly who are working with Barkly Regional Arts. The artists – Susannah Nelson, Lindy Brodie, Ruth Dawson and Janet Thompson – have used recycled satellite dishes to create their work, which were a part of the self-build houses of Wutungurra, a community located 500 km north of Alice Springs.

Their obsolescence incites the issue of the housing in remote communities and the answer from the NT Minister of Housing, Gerry McCarthy, a former teacher in Wutungurra.

Reinvigorating the MECA Collection

A HISTORY IN COLLECTING

Drawing from a heritage collection of significant Yolngu bark paintings, sculptural objects, hollow logs and weavings, this exhibition brings together a stunning selection of 64 works from the Milingimbi Education and Cultural Association (MECA) Collection, created in Arnhem Land in the mid-1970s.

This exhibition reflects the richness and diversity of unique Indigenous cultures, highlighting selected acquisitions that have been added to MAGNT’s Aboriginal Art and Material Culture Collection over the past three years.

The stories of how museums collect objects can be just as interesting as the objects themselves. From the highlands of Papua New Guinea to the early missionary days on Groote Eylandt, fascinating tales can be drawn from the histories of collecting through the diverse range of pipes over the past 50 years.

PAPUNYA TULA ARTISTS In 1972, Papunya Tula Artists became Australia’s first Aboriginal arts company that foreshadowed the federal government shifting its Indigenous policies from assimilation to self-determination. When local school teacher Geoffrey Bardon asked the men ‘what do you want to call the company?’, Pintupi man Charlie Tarawa (Tjaruru) immediately said, ‘Papunya Tula’.

New Directions

In Print-Making Recalling the origins of the Ikuntji Artists’ art movement, New Directions In Print-Making focuses on works on paper, centering on screen prints.

This series is a result of two workshops with Timothy Growcott, printed by master printmaker Basil Hall.

Showcasing the first prints created at Ikuntji Artists since 2011, the exhibition includes final works by the late Kumuntjai Napurrula. Also featured in the show are works by renowned Tennant Creek based artist Dion Beasley.

Electric Fields Electric Fields exploded on to the Australia music scene in 2017 by taking out New Talent of the Year at the National Indigenous Music Awards.

This year, they came oh so close representing Australia at Eurovision.

We caught up with the talented electronic duo, Zaachariaha Fielding and Michael Ross, who are hitting the Top End as part of their 2000 and Whatever tour.

Tell us all about Eurovision!

It was a beautiful experience! A bit spooky and nerve-racking with all the cameras, but the process ran super smoothly. The artists all had such camaraderie. There’s been a huge influx of energy from around the world that may not have happened without Eurovision.

What was the inspiration behind the song you performed, 2000 and Whatever?

We wanted to create a party song for New Year’s Eve that brought the

past and future into the present.

Some positive energy for the current generation, as each year flicks over in what is arguably a very short life.

You often talk about the energy of your music. How do you craft that element of your sound and translate it to your live shows?

For each track we just turn our antennas on and channel the idea.

So, depending on what the song is, different electronic textures and ways of interpreting the lyrics will paint the energy to tell the story.

When we get on the stage, the audience fuels us. Each member of the audience has a kind of code to crack and when we’ve gotten through to one member, we move on to the next. There’s a spirit element that transforms the room into a queer, First Nations church of sorts.

This year is the UN Year of Indigenous Languages – how important is it for language to be recognised on such a scale, and to be contemporary performers

ZF: I love it – it gives me goose bumps to hear it sung. I grew up with the language being spoken in the community and by the Elders.

MR: I feel so honoured to be singing traditional language on stage and it breaks down a type of barrier.

It shows that all of Australia can celebrate this land’s deep culture.

Darwin often gets left off the tour circuit – was it important for you to play in the Territory?

We have a lot of supporters in Darwin and it just felt right. The energy is very strong and we love it.

What can fans expect at the show?

We’re opening the night with First Nations drag queens, so it’s going to be a party! We’re bringing some new songs and look forward to having an audience we can give a bit more time to and connect with more than you can at a festival.

BROWN’S MART’S LIVE ON FRIDAYS are an institution in Darwin. Now, the format is extending to Thursday nights with a brand new concept – cue, Culture Club.

Brown’s Mart Theatre’s head honcho Sean Pardy says it’s all about making sure the diverse Darwin community feels welcome in the space.

“Brown’s Mart is a venue for the entire Darwin Community,” he says.

“We wanted to make the precinct accessible for diverse community groups and do everything in our power to make it possible for them to call Brown’s Mart their own.”

Cultural groups will take over the courtyard and showcase music, dance and activities every Thursday night during June and July.

“The initial concept was to create an opportunity for the culturally

“Most hard-core record collectors will look anywhere and everywhere – including behind the desk at a store,” Sage says.

A customer had lined up a stack of records worth a couple of hundred dollars, ready to buy, when he found a hidden stash.

“I hadn’t sorted through the box yet and he found a single in it. ‘Word Up’ by Cameo,” Sage says.

“I told him it wasn’t for sale yet and he told me if I didn’t sell it to him, he’d put all the other records he was going to buy back. It wasn’t

diverse communities of Darwin to utilise the precinct,” Pardy says.

“We know that there is an array of talent in this city and we wanted to see some of that at Brown’s Mart. We partnered with Darwin Community Arts, who have rich and long term relationships with these communities, to help us deliver Club Culture and help us to showcase the true diversity of the Darwin community.”

The fun kicks off on June 6 with celebrated local band, Darwin World Mix, featuring an array of multicultural instruments and performers. This months, punters can also enjoy evenings celebrating Sephardic culture, a Bollywood inspired dance sesh and traditional Thai performances.

Sage opened Air Raid Records this April when a few stars aligned, having always had a passion for vinyl and the music community that appreciates it.

“If people just want to come and listen to music, they don’t have to feel obliged to buy,” he says.

“They can come and have a chat, and listen to music and re-live the good old days.”

Sage can be found spinning vinyl at events around town and has also taken up nude modelling for life drawing – two passions he’s willing to combine for the right price…

FORMER LOCALS VANDERAA are returning to Darwin for one show only at Darwin Ski Club. Passionate about the environment, the brothers have teamed up with Sea Shepherd Darwin for a beach clean up. OTL caught up with Aaron and Levi to chat ocean conservation, Mary’s laksa and why they love to come home.

What’s it like to come back to your hometown to perform?

We love coming home to perform for our family, friends, fans and connecting back to our roots. To come home and receive the support and love we do at our shows fills us full with gratitude. Thank you, NT – we love you and will forever call this heat bubble of ours home.

What have you been up to down south?

This tour started in the Sunshine Coast and finishes in the Sunshine Coast. It’s the first time we’ve done a complete lap of the country, covering over 30,000 kilometres. Some highlights so far have been performing at Falls Festival,

experiencing the WA coastline for the first time and, of course, coming home to the NT. You’ve teamed up with Sea Shepherd Darwin for a beach clean the morning of your gig – why is ocean conservation so close to your hearts?

We love the ocean. We are in the ocean every day – swimming, surfing and creating music on the beach. It breaks our hearts to see so much trash littering our oceans and affecting our marine life.

Enough is enough, and we need all hands on deck, every human doing their bit to look after our planet.

Through our music, we are connecting with people to help build awareness, change old ways of thinking and patterns for a better future. It’s very hard to reduce plastic use when almost everything we purchase comes wrapped in plastic. By creating conversation within our communities, we can collectively learn quicker and inspire each other to do our best.

Vika What does 2019 hold for VanderAa? 2019 is so, so super exciting! We finish the Southern Cross Tour at Splendour in the Grass where we’ll be performing on the World Stage and Bohemian Lounge. Our plan for 2020 is to do less touring and more recording – so there’s lots of new music coming your way!

And, finally, what is a must-do when you come back to Darwin?

Mary’s laksa at Parap Village Markets, a visit to Douglas Hot Springs and a walk along Cas Beach.

What’s the first album you ever bought?

Sherbet's Howzat –I bought in on vinyl at Doncaster Shoppingtown.

Actually, Mum bought it because I passed my piano exam with flying colours and she said I could have whatever I wanted, and I wanted the Sherbet Howzat record. I wish I still had that album but a lot of Tongans used to come to our house and help themselves to the record collection.

MUFF THERE ARE A FEW SPECIAL TREATS for those making the annual pilgrimage over the harbour for the Mandorah Ukulele and Folk Festival (MUFF). This year, MUFF fans are treated to Territory favourites, Leah Flanagan and Shellie Morris, plus some unique interstate visitors.

The Thin White Ukes perform shape-shifting songs of David Bowie in three part harmonies, all on the humble ukulele. The trio of Melbourne musos – Betty France, Michael Dwyer and Robert Stephens – are heading north to the infamous MUFF to swap the

winter blues for palm trees.

Tenor playing Michael Dwyer says it’s a big job re-arranging Bowie’s ‘perfect’ songs for the pint-sized, four-stringed instrument.

“We’re very respectful of the real thing, but we arrange the music in our own way. We’re skilful about the art of arrangement. It’s difficult.

Some tracks stay on the drawing board for months,” he says.
