The departures lounge at Darwin International Airport is getting a tropical makeover and will transform into a pop-up venue, channelling vibes from Darwin Festival’s Festival Park and the original Hotel Darwin.

he Green Room will turn the airport lounge into a mini oasis, complete with tropical entertainment on stage from Top End arts organisations.

Project manager Claire Punch says the move to create a dedicated arts venue inside the airport was possibly an Australian first.

“Brisbane Airport has some interesting art installations, while Melbourne has a pop-up bar in its terminal, but we are looking to create a pop-up space that specifically showcases NT arts. We aren’t aware of anything else to the scale and quality we’re creating,” she says.

The Airport is working with its partner arts organisations, including Tracks Dance, Brown’s Mart Theatre, the Darwin Symphony Orchestra, SPUN, Darwin Festival, the NT Travelling Film Festival and Darwin International Film Festival, to program events through August and September to showcase NT arts and culture.

The Green Room was originally a working title for the space before the creators realised the former bar of the same name at Hotel Darwin would be the perfect theme.

Punch says there is still a strong sense of nostalgia for the old bar within the community.

“When you start talking to people who were living here when the original Green Room was around, they have fond memories of it as a venue,” she says.

Tracks Dance director Adelaide Wood says Top End travellers will get a teaser of their Darwin Festival show, In Your Blood, on August 3 at the airport.

“We’re looking to provide a variety of styles,” she says.

“It had all those qualities we love about Darwin – a relaxed atmosphere and loungey environment in somewhere that was built for the tropics.

“The Festival show this year is performed on an area 26 meters long, so we’re resizing it to fit on a six metre stage and will perform a section of it at the airport,” she says.

“There was cane furniture, lush tropical pot plants, hanging lights and louvred windows. There were many beautiful design elements we can draw on today.”

“It’s about things that are in your blood – your bloodlines, your family and things you’re passionate about, like sport,” Wood says.

The fit-out will pay homage to the original space, with a modern twist.

Performances on stage and across digital screens will pop up at peak times.

Wood says it’s exciting to see the airport used in a unique way.

NT Airports’ CEO and Chair of Darwin Festival, Ian Kew, is keen to see the space come to life.

“It’s great to think Darwin Airport is having this initiative that no other airport has had.”

“We want to create an environment that is reminiscent of old Darwin, the original Green Room and Festival Park – lively, engaging and entertaining. It needs to reflect our unique Territorian story, not only

“It’s a really fascinating concept,” she says.

“For this space it’s important that we engage with a number of genres to keep different audiences engaged, and we like to be playful with our repertoire.”

Stephens says the DSO is very excited about the opening of The Green Room.

“It introduces the unique local flavour that we have in the Territory and it’s a terrific opportunity to showcase the local talent we have here.”

Producer Amy Hetherington has been busy organising live music for every Friday lunchtime, and special shows through August and September across spoken word, dance, classical music and film.

Alice Springs-based live-looping cellist Xavia will bring her modernfolk tunes to the airport for Darwin Festival.

Week Celebrations

INDIGENOUS MODELS WILL BE TRANSFORMED AS PART OF NAIDOC WEEK CELEBRATIONS THIS MONTH. Aboriginal Bush Traders (ABT) has teamed up with DMKM Beauty Studio to bring their ‘Transformation Tuesdays’ to the venue, with a focus on makeup for all skin-tones and shades.

DMKM owner and Arrernte woman Mena Fenney says models from the DMKM Indigenous Model Initiative will score a makeover from their style guru, Teddy Suphannabutt, and get dolled up in accessories and clothes from ABT to celebrate Indigenous beauty.

“It’s going to be amazing,” she says.

“We can cater to every skin type and shade. Teddy starts off with the basics of how to prepare your skin and then goes through all the tools he’s using and how he’s doing everything – the brushes for blending, the eye shadow and foundation and how to contour your face, which is a big thing in the makeup industry at the moment.”

The live make-up and styling tutorial is just one of the NAIDOC Week workshops being run by ABT. ABT marketing coordinator Matthew Van Roden says it’s a great opportunity to highlight businesses run

“We thinks it’s a good opportunity to promote the very thing that Aboriginal Bush Traders is about – supporting grassroots and Aboriginal owned and run micro enterprises.

It also promotes a dialogue in the community about supporting these businesses,” he says.

“All the activities are supporting Indigenous artists who may not be involved with the infrastructure of arts centres in the Top End and awesome local Indigenous owned and run business doing great things like DMKM.” AT

Ripper says the dog show is a great event for the whole family.

“The whole premise of the Darwin Show is that there are things that families can enjoy that are free – it’s not just about sideshow alley and the show bags – there are events people can come and enjoy that don’t cost money, and the dogs are part of that.”

Show chief executive Cherry Court says a different theme is selected each year to highlight a different area of the show.

How the theme is used in other areas is up to the creativity of show goers and entrants.

“People can use their creativity with cooking or scarecrows – you can use the theme to build a concept, but it’s really up to the individual to think outside the square and be creative,” Court says.

Chances are if you’re not a dog person you’re a cat person, and this year the Cat Association NT (CANT) is celebrating 50 years.

But CANT president Heather Havens says it doesn’t have to be one or the other.

“There are plenty of dogs and pussy cats that live together very well,” she says.

“Quite often, families will get a puppy and a kitten at the same time, and even older dogs have settled with cats quite well.”

PEDIGREE POOCHES ARE IN THE SPOTLIGHT AT THE DARWIN SHOW as this year’s theme has gone to the dogs.

Dog show organiser Susie Ripper says that there’s a special award for best Asian breed, in celebration of the Chinese Year of the Dog and the show’s theme.

The cat and dog shows are part of a huge program of events. Court says the show is an annual highlight on the NT calendar because it gives people a chance to get involved and see the best of the agricultural industry.

“More and more people spend so much time on their phones, and looking at a screen, and what we’re doing here is a community celebration – it’s a tactile experience you can touch and see and participate in,” she says.

“Where else do you go to have all those experiences where little people can pick up a little duck or pat a cow and see the best stud cattle in the NT?”

Too keen to be back up in the heat and see all my family,” he says.

Baker will join Neil Finn, Stevie Jean and Rachel Rachel on the line-up for the Darwin concert.

He says it’s a special day to be coming back home, and he’ll be letting his hair down with his crew.

“It means a lot to me because NT is my home and where my life and career all kicked off and I’ll be forever grateful the lessons I’ve learned, and continue to learn, as a person and musician,” he says.

“It’s been a long leg of touring and festivals so far so I owe it to my crew and myself to let off a few fireworks and have fun in the heat before we go back to very cold Melbourne.”

Territory Day Baker says she’ll perform a special set with producer James Mangohig in K-town.

“We’ve got a duo hip-hop set that hasn’t been done in a very long time and it seems appropriate we do it together on Territory Day,” she says.

Baker says Territory Day is an opportunity to reflect on the lifestyle and appreciate those around us in the NT. “Being a Territorian is special in that life here is unique to the rest of the country,” she says.

“We have a more laid back approach to life and we have a different perspective to the rest of the world.

“We live in a special place in the country and we should hold that close to our hearts.”

Hills Hoist Studios IT’S HAD FORMER LIVES AS A SECOND-HAND SHOP, a brothel and a boarding house, but now the property adjoining Mayfair Gallery will be a home for local and visiting artists.

Newly created Hills Hoist Studios – a collaboration between David Collins from Mayfair Gallery and Britt Guy from Accomplice – offers studio space and a venue for Top End arts events inside an old-school high-set Darwin house, close to the centre of the city.

“There aren’t many art spaces left in the city that have that old Darwin vibe, with indoor-outdoor space,” Collins says.

“If I was to bring artists up from Melbourne to do a residency, I don’t want to offer them a warehouse-style concrete box. I want them to look out the louvred

window and see frangipani trees. I want them to have the full Darwin experience.”

For locals, it also offers the opportunity to be around other artists, with access to the outdoor area and gallery space.

Collins and Guy came up with the name after Accomplice held a cooking workshop in the garden area.

“There was this diverse bunch of men cooking around a barbecue and they were all nerding out on this vintage Hills Hoist in the yard,” Collins explains.

“They wanted to dig it up and relocate it. But I’m quite attached to it and the name for the studio came to us from that. A Hills Hoist holds different things and is Aussie without being patriotic.”

A diverse range of artists already occupy the space, with Accomplice, Mayfair, paint and mural business Proper Creative, and Larrakeyah artist Shaun Lee all calling it home.

Guy says the studio space is open to any independent artist working outside of an organised structure, and is available for hire or as part of a residency program.

“It’s about fostering the talent of independent artists,” she says.

Hills Hoist Studios has hosted cooking workshops, textiles workshops and the launch of the Darwin Fringe Festival. It will hold workshops and events involving food throughout the Fringe.

Beer Can

Regatta BEER CAN REGATTA BATTLERS HAVE BEEN WARNED – the Laser Electrical team is coming to reclaim their title.

After losing their crown last year, the team will be pulling out all the stops to steal back the Battle of Mindil title.

The battle is the main event of the day, with teams vying for glory by collecting a piece of treasure in the water and returning it to officials.

Media coordinator Sacha King says it’s always the highlight of the day.

“There’re no rules in the Battle of Mindil, so it’s always exciting,” King says.

“You can take flour bombs and eggs, attack each other’s boat and even if you don’t find the treasure it doesn’t matter – it’s only the person who hands it over to officials that wins, so there’s always a mad tackle race at the end.”

Laser Electrical captain Trent Fowler says the no-rules race will live up to its name, but they’ll go a bit easier on opponents this year in their 2000-can boat.

“We’ve toned it down so there will be no eggs this year, but we’ll have tomatoes and flour and maybe some perfume water that makes them stink.”

“It might take some cheating at the end – we’ll find out who’s (got the treasure) and we’ll mug them.”

Fowler says the team has competed every year since 2009 and has a trophy room full of their accolades, including multiple wins for best boat and Battle of Mindil.

“We do it for team building,” he says.

“We’ll do a few Friday sessions and glue a few cans together, and we’ll put the boat together on a few Saturdays over a few beers and a BBQ.”

Viking Funeral

King says organisers are expecting a huge turn out this year and encouraged everyone to register their boats early.

“We had low numbers last year because it fell on the same weekend as the V8s but we’re expecting more this year,” she says.

Pretty fun, according to Top End Bowhunters vice president Troy Wright.

“If we can get 10-15 boats it makes for a really good Battle of Mindil.”

All the profits raised will go to the Asthma Foundation NT.

It’s a special honour each year, with only six bowhunters entrusted to not only do the job safely, but to put on a good show.

“It’s good fun. We’ve got a few set people who shoot with traditional bows all the time, so they’ll be our key people, but we’ll also get some people in there who look like Vikings,” Wright laughs.

Wright says the amateur Vikings

have a few tricks up their sleeve to keep the crowd entertained.

“We’re going to do some different coloured flames this year,” he says.

“We’re going to mix some salts in so you’ll get some red, green and blue flames flying across, and we’ll keep the spectacle going for a bit longer, too.”

In the lead up the expert bow-shooters make about 60 arrows ready to say a farewell to those lost at sea.

The festivities this year include all the usual – a performance by the Darwin Pipe Band, a feast of pig on the spit, and a best-dressed competition for Vikings.

Dinah Beach Cruising Yacht Association general manager Wendy McCallum says the best-dressed winner needs more than a great costume.

“It’s all about the attitude,” she says.

“Costume goes a long way, but it’s how you wear it – you need lots of confidence and lots of character and a good, fun attitude.”

JODEE MUNDY GREW UP HEARING IN A DEAF FAMILY, but it was only when she was five-years-old that she really began to understand what it meant to be Deaf.

She told her Mum they had called for her. It was only then she realised what it meant to be Deaf – her parents and two older brothers couldn’t hear.

Mundy was lost at Kmart when staff paged her family over the loud-speaker. No one showed up, so they called again. More time passed and her mother finally arrived, frantically signing at her in Auslan, asking where she had been.

In her production Personal, Mundy delves into the contradictions of inhabiting two worlds – living in a Deaf family, where using sign language is natural, and living in a society that sees only the family’s disability with voyeuristic curiosity.

Personal is a fascinating, touching and deeply personal story exploring dis/ability and how we perceive one another, presented through a captivating blend of performance, storytelling, multimedia and animation, performed in Auslan and English.

How is Darwin Festival celebrating the NT’s big 4-0?

We’ve got three fantastic works celebrating 40 years of self-governance, including Congress by All The Queens Men – a beautiful project where eight local citizens are paired with eight local wordsmiths to present a series of imagined first speeches in Parliament exploring the politics of identity and place. We also have a large-scale projection work made my local artist Naina Sen called Face To Face, a video portrait work of 40 Darwin faces.

We also have a large-scale installation called Pivot, which sees three semi-intelligent seesaws installed in Festival Park that you can ride on and talk to – talking to a seesaw

is a pretty surreal thing to do, and they’re programmed to be quite philosophical, so we hope people will come to Festival Park ready to ask big questions to our big colourful seesaws.

The Aurora Spiegeltent is back – tell us what’s new this year?

The Spiegeltent will have a new home on The Esplanade, but this year there will be a pop-up bar and food by Little Miss Korea. This year’s show LIMBO is my personal favourite work by Strut & Fret Production House. Tell us about some of the themes behind this year’s program.

One that rises to the surface is unearthing forgotten histories. We explore forgotten Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories with fantastic projects like Buried Country, our wonderful opening night concert, and in Jessie Lloyd’s beautiful Mission Songs Project – 1957 Palm Island Strike. Territory histories get turned over in theatre works like Letters To Lindy and in our Words and Ideas program. It’s a really diverse program, and one full of surprises. We love to get people thinking and talking, but mostly we want to give people great reasons to come together and make the most of the beautiful month of August.

We’re looking at a range of exciting projects for 2019 and 2020, which will see more local participation and more avenues for access for all members of society – and two more phenomenal Festivals, of course!

Health & Wellness Festival THE 2018 HEALTH AND WELLNESS FESTIVAL IS ALL ABOUT FINDING YOUR PATHWAY TO A HEALTHIER LIFE. More than 50 exhibits, activities and speakers will transform the Darwin Waterfront into a healthy hub for the return of the annual festival.

Organiser from Helping People Achieve John McNeur says it’s a great opportunity to kick start a new health and well-being journey.

“Our core message this year is, ‘what is going to be your pathway

to health and wellness in 2018?’,” he says.

“The festival is a vast menu of opportunity for people to explore and experience activities all looking at what we put in, and how we look after, our bodies and minds.

“I think most of the exhibitors and speakers will talk to that – it might be optometrist Helen Sommers talking about looking after your eyes, or the Naturally Cheeky girls talking about the advantage of apple cider vinegar, or community groups like Volunteers NT talking about the personal value of making

a contribution to society.”

Among the exhibits will be a chillout area to enjoy the Waterfront, and a safe place for the kids to run around.

“The event has an undeniable energy about it,” McNeur says.

“It’s a safe, healthy, vibrant, energetic festival which allows people to dip in and out of things they want to explore.”

FROM LOUNGE ROOM CABARET TO A 10-MINUTE SHOW IN A PUBLIC TOILET, THE 2018 DARWIN FRINGE FESTIVAL WILL COVER A LOT OF GROUND.

This year’s line-up is an impressive 80 distinct events showcasing the work of 300 artists and, according to festival director CJ Fraser-Bell, that makes the Top End community arts festival almost as big as the Edinburgh Fringe per capita.

“There’s also a lot of fruits that people think you need to harvest when they’re ripe, but actually you can use them when they’re less than ripe.

Inspired by the damage from Tropical Cyclone Marcus, local foodie Emma Lupin is sharing her knowledge for a cyclone survival kit workshop this month.

“People pack their cyclone kit full of bad food – it’s always the same stuff – but there’s all these plants you can hoe into and eat before you start on your tinned stuff,” she says.

“The workshop is all about how you

can be creative and imaginative from fruit that has fallen and plants that you’ve planted and grown yourself.”

Lupin will teach participants which fruit and veggies can withstand cyclonic winds, what you can salvage from fallen trees, and how to collect water safely.

“So we’ll be looking at how you can salvage things that have fallen down in the wind like bananas and jackfruit.”

The hands-on workshop will be run with a post-cyclone set up with just a camp stove and the basic utensils you’d pack in your kit.

There’s also a deeper message rooted in the workshop about society’s reliance on major organisations when a disaster hits.

“People are used to things being provided for them – like power and water and food,” Lupin says.

“You can grow foods which are really great to harvest when the winds come, a lot of Pacific Islands do this,” she says.

“Part of the take-home message from this workshop is about learning where all these things come from and how to be selfreliant.”

so nothing is really coming out of a packet – our chefs are making everything from scratch.”

“But we certainly don’t shy away from the big breakfast style meal either.”

The 15-foot smoker has proven to be a popular attraction for hungry Top Enders since it was unveiled on Australia Day.

Dunne says it’s an exciting time at the venue with a lot more still to come.

Rosella Festival THE TOP END LANDSCAPE IS DOTTED WITH THE BRIGHT RED FRUITS OF THE ROSELLA PLANT.

These tart fruits are plucked from the bushes and turned into a whole variety of different foods and condiments for the annual Rosella Festival in Adelaide River.

There are plenty of locals who grow their own paddocks of bushes to make their special recipes of jams, chutneys, roll-ups and cordials.

Festival organiser Annette Woodbridge says thousands of people head to Adelaide River for the festival every year because of their love of the unique fruit, which often comes with a lot of memories.

“The Rosella Festival is all about your handmade jams and chutney –

anything made with rosellas,” she says.

“It’s something different you can’t buy in the shops and there’s definitely a nostalgia factor for a lot of people.

“I can remember my Aunty Joy making rosella jam for us kids back when I was a child.”

The festivities begin with a poets’ breakfast where local wordsmiths will share their work, markets throughout the day, plus jumping castles to keep the kids entertained.

Breakfast IF YOU’VE HAD A BIG NIGHT AT THE BEACHFRONT HOTEL you can now head back in the morning to wash away the aftermath with a big breakfast.

The newly refurbished Beachfront Hotel has a hot new breakfast menu to match its hot new decor.

The facelift has allowed the chefs to be more creative with their menu, and the hotel now offers breakfast with selections for the health conscious and for those in need of some greasy goodness.

General manager Guy Dunne says the chefs can now make more products in their flash new kitchen and smoker, even curing and smoking their own bacon.

“We make a lot of products inhouse,” he says.

“We make our own hash browns, we smoke and cure our own bacon,

“We take our smoker down to Mindil Market each week, cooking crocodiles, and that’s proven to be an extremely popular attraction,” Dunne says.

“It’s a real beast of a BBQ and there’s not another one like it in Darwin, so it’s going to feature quite strongly in the new venue.”

“It’s really a new beginning for us,” he says.

“After many years of good service from the old pub we’ve brought in a more modern and contemporary style venue and opened the place up to create a real open-plan space.”

But it’s not all crocs on the ‘que.

There are plenty of healthy options too.

Dunne says there is even more in the pipeline, with a new family and pet friendly area yet to be unveiled, and plenty of live music planned for the year.

“People are very health conscious these days, so we’ve been trying to focus on a lot of healthy options for people,” Dunne says.

ROSELLA JAM 1 kg rosellas 1 kg sugar Juice of 1 lemon Place the whole fruit (with seeds and pods) into a saucepan and just cover with water. Bring to the boil and gently simmer to bring all the goodness, colour and pectin from the fruit. Strain the mixture and add sugar and lemon juice. Return to the saucepan and stir over a gentle heat until the sugar is completely dissolved, then bring to the boil. As the jam reaches setting point it is likely to stick and burn, so pay close attention and stir often. Test for setting by putting a saucer in the freezer to chill, then put a teaspoonful of jam on the saucer. Wait for it to cool slightly and push the top of it with your finger. If it crinkles it is cooked.

Bottle the jam into clean, hot jars and seal immediately.

Science FEMINISM AND SUSTAINABLE SEAFOOD ARE ON THE MENU AT THIS YEAR’S FRINGE FESTIVAL, with Tropical Kitchen aiming to satisfy both the body and the brain.

Producer Britt Guy says the program will dish up tasty talks, facilitated by anthropologist Jill Pope, and fascinating food from international chefs at two Science at Sunset sessions.

Lia Pa’apa’a from Plant Based Native in Cairns, will be in conversation with Greening Australia and Darwin’s Burmese horticulturalists for In The Hands of a Woman, which will explore women’s roles in food and food production. Pa’apa’a, who has Mexican and Samoan heritage, will also discuss what being vegan looks like in her cultures and will hit the kitchen to keep the audience fed during the event.

Seafood, will bring together leaders in the NT sustainable seafood industry, with Singaporean chef Sameer Chablani and Mike Hilburger from Shank Brothers. The conversation will take a deep dive into the industry, the best ways to embrace the seasons from your boat and how to enhance local tastes. Hilburger will also be behind the barbecue to show the audience what’s possible with their next catch.

Guy says the program is designed to inspire social change through food – and Darwin is the perfect place to do that.

“The way we eat in Darwin is highly multicultural, across the breadth of people,” she says.

“You go to the markets and everyone is there. Food is such a big part of our lives.”

Jamie Lewis will be in residence over the week of the Fringe, and will spend their time at local markets and restaurants with the aim of creating a daily menu based on the food conversations they’re having in Darwin.

JOSEPH TJUNG, AKA DJ TJUNG, IS JUST 17 YEARS OLD BUT HE’S ALREADY RUBBED SHOULDERS with some of the biggest DJs and musicians touring through Darwin. This year alone he’s got the crowds pumping at two of the Top End’s biggest festivals – BASSINTHEGRASS and Summer Session. Off The Leash caught up with DJ Tjung to have a chat about his journey.

When did you start DJing and what was your first gig?

I started back in 2014 just as a hobby. I had my first gig at my grade nine formal. I didn’t really have a clue what to do, I was just winging it, but everyone enjoyed it and I liked playing to a crowd, so I

thought I’d actually start doing gigs as a mobile DJ. Where did you learn?

I started because my cousin is a DJ so I asked him how he learned and he said it’s something you figure out yourself. That was great advice and I learned about DJing and how to learn things by yourself. It’s just about trial and error.

You’ve recently played BASSINTHEGRASS and Summer Session – what’s it like playing on such a big stage.

It was crazy – I’ve never played on a stage that big before and to fill that space and create the atmosphere was amazing.

What advice do you have for other young people?

Don’t be scared to put yourself out there and don’t give up on your dreams. If you’re passionate just go for it, don’t let anything stop you.

Just do what you want to do and be proud of it.

I’m usually the head because I’m small and skinny and light (laughs).

“I wanted to create a space where people can rock up after work and just relax to some good local Darwin music with their friends and family,” she says.

Amy Hetherington’s and Danielle Andrews’s Life Advice with Amy and Danielle promises to be full of embarrassing observations from two of Darwin’s most endearing and daring comedians. Also check out their solo shows, Nailed It and Obnoxiously Talented for a second helping of whimsy.

Vaudeville Knockout is equal parts classic show tunes, Peter O’Toole raffish stand up and anarchic silent comedy, all taking aim at the world of high art. Pop on down for some old-school comic laughs.

Nicole Stevens was the surprise hit of last year’s Fringe. If you like your one-liners spicy and your truth grenades hidden in ironic comic songs, then the humbly titled Not as Crap as Last Year may once again be one of the picks of the festival.

Fringe debutant, and youngest Fringe performer, Benjamin Jones is a freakish musical comedy talent and should enthral audiences in the very difficult to book and keep a straight face show, I Can’t Remember What It Was Called But It Was OK. Awkwards Anonymous features 2018 NT Raw Comedy champ, Ryan McArthur, and several friends

Of the imported comedy treats, my tip is the award-winning Wank Bank Master Class by Adam Seymour, aka Rural Ranga, who tells the story of how, short on money in New York, he moonlighted as a Taoist erotic masseuse. The show then descends into an interactive and playful masterclass in handling your partner’s – or your own – member for maximum pleasure (and laughter) using garden vegetables.

Alice Spring comedian Chris Little is coming to town with The Point of this Exercise. Chris is the NT’s most original and hilarious comic talent and needs to be seen before he hits the big time.

My interstate dark horse is Sydney based improvisational and standup comic Steve Meagher’s Chairman Steve. A Google search accidentally took me to the inventor of the ergonomic chair for every occasion, but this Steve Meagher will have you glued to your chair, losing your proverbial innards, but with adequate spinal support.

Canadian raconteur Gillian English’s Giant and Angry is a feisty, fierce and fast-paced show that reflects on her father handing down Kung Fu scissor-kick self-defence tips and other family heirlooms.

2016 National Raw Comedy finalist, Lewis Garnhem is another one to watch. The Smartest Idiot You’ll Ever Meet received positive reviews and the grapevine whispers of a warm hearted but cynical social commentary for those that like your politics with extra chilli.

Will Crawford is an up-andcrawling comic. He moonlights as a land rights lawyer and policy activist.

Top Dog Film Festival

Gurrumul

The screening of Gurrumul at the Deckchair Cinema will raise funds for one of the acclaimed musician’s greatest legacies – an investment in the next generation of Indigenous artists.

The impact of his death in July 2017 was felt across the globe, but before his passing Gurrumul Yunupingu established the Gurrumul Yunupingu Foundation to give kids in the bush the same opportunities that were afforded to him.

Foundation chair and Gurrumul’s close friend Mark Grose says the money raised from the film screening will go to into programs set up to educate and empower young Indigenous artists.

“The foundation was set up at the insistence of Gurrumul who asked both Michael (Hohnen) and I how we can help young Indigenous kids from the bush have the same opportunities and support that he’d had,” he says.

“The foundation’s aim is to set up long term programs in remote communities around arts and sport.”

MAN’S BEST FRIEND WILL BE THE CENTER OF ATTENTION at BCC Cinemas when the inaugural Top Dog Film Festival heads to Darwin.

Festival director and self-confessed dog adorer Jemima Robinson tells us all about what’s in the program and why the festival has been such a hit.

How did the film festival come about?

It all started from one film called Dog Power. It was such a great film and I really loved it, but it only went for 30 minutes. I knew it wasn’t going to get a wide release but thought people really needed to see this film. It made me wonder what other great films about dogs were out there, so we put a call out to filmmakers and dog lovers around

the globe.

What was the response from filmmakers?

There were more than 200 entries.

The hardest part of the job was choosing which films to put in.

There are nine in the festival, including a late entry that we just had to squeeze in.

Dogs are called ‘man’s best friend’ for a good reason – is that evident in the films shown?

We’ve put together a lovely program of films about dogs that really highlight the connection that people have with them and the positive impact they have on us.

It’s all about celebration and love because the connection between people and dogs is so emotional.

What other themes emerged from the films entered?

What’s interesting is you find out about the different kind of jobs dogs have. In the films you see there are avalanche rescue dogs, assistance dogs and working dogs like huskies and there’s also a lovely film about wild wolves.

You’ve put the call out for entries for the next festival – what are you hoping for the future?

The response from last year was so good – and now the word is out there we’re getting more and more entries. We do get lots of requests for people to bring their dogs along – so that’s the dream!

“The success of the film has been phenomenal,” Grose says.

“It is a film that affects people deeply – you can both laugh and cry in it.

“I think the key to the film is it’s a genuine story of his life and musical journey and there are no clichés about Indigenous musicians or life – it’s just an honest look at the journey he went on.”

Grose says Gurrumul broke down the barrier between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians in a way that had never been done before.

“What shocked people when they first discovered him was there was this phenomenal beauty in Indigenous culture that no one had really seen before,” he says.

“I think his legacy is exactly that – he’s shown the world that there is a real depth of beauty of traditional Indigenous culture. It’s not all doom and gloom and ugliness, there’s a deep artistic cultural and intellectual depth to Indigenous culture which we generally don’t see, particularly in Northern Australia where we get so many negative images.

“We don’t appreciate how important that traditional cultural content is to all of us.

“He opened the door to a world that is beautiful and Aboriginal people are saying, this is part of everyone’s Australia and we want you to share and be part of it.”

The Write A Book In A Day (WABIAD) workshop will see a team of 10 people locked down for the day to produce a young adult novel under the direction of writer and teacher Lyndal Carbery.

Carbery has completed eight WABIAD challenges with Katherine School of the Air and Katherine Region of Writers and is passionate about collaborative writing.

“Writing can be very isolating, this experience is the opposite,” she says.

“I grew up with dance and drama and enjoyed improvisation the most. To me, this is the improvisation of writing. You get parameters and then you come

together and the ideas flow and inspire everyone.”

The team will receive a unique set of guidelines on the morning of the challenge around characters, setting and an issue, and will be assigned five random words that must appear in the text. The 800010,000-word story, aimed at an audience aged between six and 10, includes an illustrated front and back cover, with further illustrations throughout.

Carbery says it’s a great way to hone your writing skills and learn from other writers.

“Every idea is accepted and entwined into the narrative.

Sometimes things don’t work and need changing or remoulding, however no-one minds because there is such acceptance between each writer and the end goal of a cohesive, entertaining story is understood.”

Although the timeframe is a challenge, Carbery says overall it’s an excellent experience, which is why she keeps coming back for more.

“You get to collaborate with a bunch of like-minded people in a different context,” she says.

“It’s exhausting but great fun!”

And best of all, completed books are donated to children in hospitals all across Australia.

“It’s one day of your life, you get to write something for kids who need a little imagination and escape for a while.”

Zine Fair THE TOP END ZINE SCENE IS SET FOR A REVIVAL at this year’s Darwin Fringe Festival – and anyone with ideas for a DIY mag is encouraged to join in.

Fringe Festival associate producer and zine fiend Tamara Howie says a Zine Fair will celebrate the culture of zines and give people a chance to get creative and share their work.

“Darwin has been missing a zine scene for a while,” she says.

“There are people out there doing it on their own, but it’s nice to have a community and we hope the Zine Fair will promote that.”

Howie says zines cover everything from art to short stories and everything in between.

“They are really diverse – they can be visual or words or a combination of the two. They don’t need to have

Those ideas can be brought along to the one-night-only workshop at the Northern Territory Library, where creators will be given the resources to cut, paste, write, draw and photocopy their zines for the fair.

Howie hopes other Fringe Festival workshops, including Write a Book in a Day and Tactile Short Stories, will also encourage more people to give zines a go.

The Zine Fair will bring it all together, showcasing what’s on offer in the Top End and giving creators and readers the opportunity to buy, trade and swap zines.

Listed variously under Biography/ Crime and Thriller/Health, The Trauma Cleaner defies simple categorisation. It is a biography. Yet its protagonist is not famous, nor does she occupy a profession that is usually afforded biographical treatment. Rather, Sandra Pankhurst is a forensic cleaner whose everyday work takes her into isolated or abandoned spaces marked by death, decay and despair.

In writing of Sandra’s cleaning work and the people she meets along the way, Krasnostein uncovers a world that is usually out of sight – veiled by taboo and grief. Through stories of suicide, murder and hoarding, The Trauma Cleaner explores the extreme limits of who we are.

Writing without judgement and with compassion, Krasnostein also reveals that such states are not so extreme after all – this could be any one of us.

Indeed Sandra herself is a figure marked by trauma and her complex past looms large in the book.

Before she was a trauma cleaner, she was a husband and father, sex reassignment patient and sex worker, and in writing Sandra’s own story, Krasnostein has to grapple with complexities of memory and the damage left in the wake of abuse.

I was incredibly moved and surprised by this remarkable book – it is fast paced, propelled by impressive writing and layered story.

At its conclusion however, I was also left feeling a little uneasy.

extraordinary and she really cares about the marginalised people she works with. But she is also an unwieldy character and unreliable witness. Krasnostein writes that her book is a ‘love letter’ to Sandra and this positioning at times teeters on the edge of sentimentalism.

Despite Krasnostein’s best efforts and my true admiration of Sandra’s resilience, I was less enamoured than deeply saddened by Sandra.

Ultimately though, The Trauma Cleaner is a fascinating work of nonfiction that left me thinking deeply about the complex, often tragic, lives that many people endure – often out of sight and mind.

Similarly, the fascination with people’s state of crises felt at times voyeuristic – particularly in the case of hoarders, whose homes are intricately and intimately exposed in the book. While reading the truly putrid descriptions of these scenes, I was left with many questions about the psychological context of hoarding and the services and supports available. Somehow simply exposing these spaces didn’t quite seem enough.

Almost Face to Face AUDIENCES WILL BE TRANSPORTED FROM A DARKENED DARWIN theatre to Dublin’s underbelly in an intimate one-man monologue that explores the fringes of society.

Award-winning playwright and actor Stephen House is bringing his powerful performance Almost Face to Face to this year’s Darwin Fringe Festival.

Described as risky, honest, brutal and human, the monologue follows a writer’s creative process and his journey into the underworld of Dublin, where he encounters the homeless, drug dealers, sex workers and other people on the outer.

“It’s fiction but is quite affected by things I’ve done in my own life,” says House, who was inspired to write the piece during an Australia Council Irish Literature Residency.

“I’m attracted to the world we don’t often hear about or write about, as an artist and as a human being.”

Monologue is House’s favourite form of theatre, as it allows him to draw together all the elements of theatre he loves – poetry, spoken word, acting and storytelling.

House was nominated for a Green Room Best Actor award for Almost Face to Face in 2014 and has been performing the show around the country and internationally for more than three years.

“The performance has grown over time,” he says.

Almost Face to Face is part of a trilogy of unconnected monologues.

It follows the award-winning Appalling Behaviour set in the streets of Paris. The third piece in the series takes place in New Delhi and is still being drafted.

FROM A YOUNG EMERGING HIP-HOP ARTIST to a seniors dance troupe, Tracks Dance Company is staging a diverse show at the Darwin Fringe Festival.

Now in its third year, Fresh Tracks showcases the talent of local emerging choreographers, and resident dance animateur Kelly Beneforti says this year’s performance will bring four very different acts to the stage.

Beneforti led a seven-week intensive course in which Darwin dancers Will Nery, Felicity Wardle and Sheila Rose developed new works for the show.

Recent Casuarina Senior College graduate, Nery, will use dance to represent young men in Darwin through hip-hop and break dance; experienced circus and physical theatre artist, Wardle, brings her recent Indonesian dance studies in masks and puppetry to the stage; and local Indigenous woman, Rose, will perform powerful stories to a Black Arm Band medley.

Each will choreograph a 10-15-minute act performed by local dancers and the show will be rounded out by seniors dance troupe the Grey Panthers.

“The local and independent dance community in Darwin is small but is dealing with a diverse and interesting range of issues and

these pieces reflect that,” Beneforti says.

“We are treading new ground and committed to making contemporary, thought-provoking work of now.”

She encourages everyone to come along, especially if they haven’t experienced a dance performance before.

“Dance is more powerful than any other platform because audiences can have their own interpretation of what the piece is about or what the choreographer is trying to say,” she says.

“A lot of people worry that they’re not going to ‘get’ dance, but you don’t have to in order to watch and enjoy dance.

A SHOW DESCRIBED AS “STORYTELLING THROUGH PERFORMANCE ART, SPOKEN WORD, DOCUMENTARY, CABARET AND NEO-BURLESQUE VIGNETTES” is a little difficult to imagine, but that’s what Nel Da Silva is bringing to this year’s Fringe.

“Once people realise this and let go and give themselves permission to draw from it what they like, it is an amazing space for an audience.

Frankghanistan is a tribute to her experience growing up in Frankston, a low socio-economic suburb about an hour out of Melbourne.

“Being such a physical art form and really visceral, it draws an empathetic response from the audience.”

While that might seem worlds away from the Top End, Da Silva says the show will hit closer to home than you might think.

The popular Tracks show has just two performances at the intimate Brown’s Mart Theatre.

“There’s a Frankston for everyone,” she says.

However, it wasn’t until she premiered Frankghanistan at the Melbourne Fringe Festival in 2017 that she realised it was funny, which saw her take it to the Melbourne Comedy Festival earlier this year.

She’s also performed it in NSW, and each time she’s had audience members from all over the country – and the world – approaching her, saying they recognise bits of Frankston in their own suburbs.

Da Silva appears as both herself – a product of Pakistani-born, Chinese, Anglo-Indian, Portuguese parents growing up in a mostly white and fairly racist place, and as her alter-

She hits the streets of Frankston as Noel and interviews the locals – and the results have had audiences laughing, crying and laughing again.

Da Silva, who in the show’s promotional material poses naked draped in a sausage noose, admits there is “uncomfortability” in the show.

“I stand naked in front of the audience, literally,” she says.

But ultimately, it’s a self-love story in which Da Silva takes a critical and humorous look at the bogan in her – Noel.

“It took me 40 years to even admit I was from Frankston,” she says.

“If people asked where I was from, I’d just say the Mornington Peninsula or Bayside area. But really, it’s a gift that I’ve been raised in that environment.”

“But what if we’d had more of a chance to connect? Small conversations can mean so much.”

OU MIGHT THINK A PERSON WHO ONCE SPENT 18 HOURS ON TRAINS to get to an acting class would be sick of them, but writer and actor Tremayne Gordon has turned his experiences on public transport into a play set to hit the stage for the Darwin Fringe Festival.

Train Lines tells the story of Ash and Rose, two strangers who meet at a train station. Unbeknownst to them, the pair is connected by a mutual

friend and have a lot in common.

Gordon says the idea for the play came to him when he spent a lot of time travelling from the Sunshine Coast to Brisbane to attend acting classes – and on the epic 18-hour journey from Sydney to Brisbane.

He would often cross paths with people briefly, waiting for a train or helping someone find the right platform, and was left with a lingering feeling of what would have happened if they’d had more time to connect.

At just 22-years-old, Gordon has several plays, a short film and a music video under his belt. He wrote, produced and acts in Train Lines, but says being on stage is his first love.

“I love the liveness of theatre,” he says.

“It’s so organic. The adrenalin of being in the same room as the audience is something you just can’t get from film. It’s so immersive.

“A really good story on stage is something you’ll remember forever.”

Corrosion & Whiplash Theatre

CORRUGATED IRON’S CONTRIBUTION TO THIS YEAR’S FRINGE FESTIVAL will be a bit of a juggling act, with the Top End youth arts organisation staging two very different shows.

Corrosion sets circus skills to a dystopian tale, while Whiplash Theatre presents a medley of monologues and skits.

Executive producer Jane Tonkin says both performances will put young local talent centre stage to thrill audiences with their diverse skills.

“It gives young, local theatre-makers the chance to explore their art forms,” she says.

Set at a train station where everyone is on a journey to the end of the world, Corrosion is a visual spectacular of choreographed circus pieces including acrobatics, acrobalance, juggling, diablo, aerial, trapeze and barrel-rolling.

Members of Corrugated Iron’s ensembles, Cyclone Circus and Flying Gypsies, have joined forces with Circus Monoxide, from Wollongong in NSW, to create the show, which Tonkin says was a remarkable feat of its own.

“The Fringe will be the first coming together of both troupes,” she says.

Tonkin says the audience can digest it “like a package of short films”.

“There is an enormous variety and it will keep the audience on their toes,” she says.

QUEER ARTIST MATTHEW VAN RODEN HAD A STRICT RELIGIOUS UPBRINGING – a factor that still emerges in his multi-disciplinary art practice. Van Roden is in the midst of a visual arts research masters at Charles Darwin University and will be sharing a look at what he’s been working on with his show THE// WORD//BECOMES//FLESH as part of the Darwin Fringe Festival.

Tell us about the elements you’re researching in the show.

The exhibition brings together all of my material pleasures – wax, text and flesh. I see their Trinitarian interrelation much the same as the holy Godhead of the Bible; three in one, one in three. I feel they all speak in differing ways to notions of embodiment.

Why has text played such a big role in your artistic practice?

I have always been a child of ‘The Text’, and for me as an artist there is no creative force without a text in mind and in action. So my practice is

very much a discursive one. Although it relies on that which is seen, it must ultimately be read. Also, if by some miracle the force of it is sufficiently imbued, to cause a re-reading of one’s own self; it’s suspicions and possibilities; yourself as a text? Lordy aspirations I know, but a girl can dream.

What text inspired this body of work?

The specific text I refer to in this exhibition is found in the Gospel of St. John, where it is said that ‘The Word became flesh… and dwelt among us’ (John 1: 1-14ish). I take the peculiarity of this text, this singular triumphant statement, and apply its miracle creatively to other possibilities. What happens when words become flesh? What kinds of flesh can be created? And what, that I can identify as fleshly in myself, came from which texts?

What’s the importance of wax in your work?

Wax is so important to this triangular approach for its visible flesh like qualities and its loaded history of human simulacrum. In this work, I have created an encaustic (wax) flesh

field. It contains words stenciled in scar-like wax, “THE WORD BECOMES FLESH, THE FLESH BECOMES TEXT”.

This visceral, flesh-like, ‘porky’ screen gives way to the stilted, shifting, forming, fleshy and exposed movement of my naked body.

Of course, conceptually it is nothing original, informed entirely by those mummies and daddies of queer theory that have nursed me at their collective milky appendages.

What will this visually look like?

There is a nine-panel grid of encaustic wax with stencilled text inlayed and a projection of a performance piece with audio. It’s very immersive and you either can’t turn your eyes away or want to run out of the building.

What do you hope people will get out of your show?

I hope if you are queer, you might find a home amongst the folds of this work. I hope if you are gay, you will find a space to smile. I hope that anyone else will find a feast for the eyes and for the ears, and perhaps leave with a suspicion of the possible.

Hermannsburg Potters IT’S RARE TO SEE ARTISTS AT WORK. I’M TALKING ABOUT MIDBRUSH STROKE, mid-decision.

What colour, what form is needed in that dormant space on the canvas?

While on a travelling artist residency at Watch This Space in Mparntwe Alice Springs, I had the great privilege to visit the Hermannsburg Potters in their communal studio in Ntaria Hermannsburg, a western Arrernte community. There, I found myself immersed in the creative flow of no less than 10 women artists.

I am an artist myself with a studio practice founded in ceramics. I find silence and solitude the best conditions to work in, and I don’t tend to invite visitors into my studio. So I was humbled to be invited into the Hermannsburg Potters studio space.

Sensitive, also, to the fact that I don’t speak Western Arrernte .

But I was warmly welcomed by senior artist Hayley Coulthard Panangka, who gave me a tour of the newly renovated building which included a gallery, store-room and kiln room. Each space offered up a comprehensive view of the making process – coil built and burnished pots painted with vibrant scenes of traditional Country, associated

Dreaming and life in Ntaria that the Hermannsburg Potters have come to be celebrated for.

At some point Hayley returned to what she had been working on when I arrived – a pot disappearing under a flurry of brush strokes of different shades and tones of green, maybe a garden. I got chatting to Beth Inkamala Mbitjana, an emerging artist. I took pleasure in our mutual love of orange, and we traded photos on our phones of glowing orange sunset skies from out this way. I was also drawn to her pairing of orange with blue and her use of sgraffito on stacked modular forms. I imagined these have been thrown in sections on a potter’s wheel, and later joined by hand off the wheel, in a departure from the style and technique of traditional Hermannsburg vessels.

My relationship to tradition and convention in my own practice is somewhat antagonistic. I suppose I am more compelled by the unknown, for clays potential for new forms of expression. In light of this Beth’s exploration of new forms and techniques appeared important and logical, the sign of a vibrant and robust creative dialogue occurring in the Hermannsburg Potters’ studio.

Reflecting on the studio visit now, I think about how layers of personal history and experience seem to converge comfortably on ceramic objects so that they become points of connection, linking disparate cultural spaces across past, present and future time. I felt and feel connected to this studio of artists through our shared language of clay, a language that they speak deftly, and with an expressiveness that delighted and inspired me.

Warlukurlangu Artists of Yuendumu

Hailing from central Australia, artists from Warlukurlangu art centre are known for painting gloriously coloured artworks. Contemporary depictions of country, animals and law help share elements of Walpiri culture. Warlukurlangu means ‘belonging to fire’ in Walpiri, and is named after a fire dreaming site near Yuendumu, in the Tanami Desert.

Light Becomes Sand Kalipinypa is a sacred site north-east of the remote Aboriginal community of Kintore on the NT/WA border. Many of the artists from Papunya Tjupi paint the important story of the rain and hail making ceremony at the site of Kalipinypa in wonderfully varied ways. The title of this exhibition is a reference to the way that the artist, Charlotte Phillipus Napurrula, interprets this story – lightening flashes, showing her the way through her country, and then turns into sand.

Papunya Tula Artists have become synonymous with producing distinctive renditions of ancestral stories. Repeating motifs reflect traditional forms and narratives while the spaces or intervals between the motifs encourage our eye to drift from one element to the next. Patterns of brush stroke, color and shape are similar to the patterns of sound over timed intervals. This powerful and distinct form of visual rhythm has captured the attention of institutions and collectors the world over.

In December last year, Darwin music lover Terry Cleary somehow managed to talk London based singer Emily Barker into playing at his Rapid Creek backyard. A long-term fan of her music, thanks to the TV series, Wallander, Cleary encouraged Barker to visit Darwin on her way home to Bridgetown, WA.

“We had a fantastic Wet season Thursday night with about 60 people gathering to hear Emily,” says Cleary.

Carty responded almost immediately, asking if the Darwin backyard gig was a serious offer.

So when Carty recently announced his Australian tour dates, Cleary was disappointed that Darwin wasn’t included.

He immediately posted a question to Barker – “Didn’t you tell him about my awesome Darwin backyard?” – to which she replied instantly – “Don’t you worry a jot, I’ll tell him”.

“My daughter Elli Belle and local singer Serina Pech opened for her, and following the show we headed to Kakadu for two days before putting Emily back on the plane to Perth.”

And so it’s happening! Carty and his musical partner Gus Gardiner (Papa vs Pretty) are playing at Terry’s Place this month – and the two day trip to Kakadu, at Barker’s recommendation, has also been added to the tour.

IT’S THE SINGING PHENOMENON THAT’S TAKEN BRISBANE BY STORM and Darwin won’t be missing out, when Pub Choir arrives for a most spectacular seaside sing-along at the Ski Club this July.

Beer loving choirmaster Astrid Jorgenson spoke to Off The Leash about how this unique singing event came to be.

What is Pub Choir – and how did it all begin?

Pub Choir is basically what it says on the box – choir in the pub! There’s no sheet music, no auditions, no pressure... no worries! Singing feels good, and does amazing things for our mental health, so the aim is to get more people to experience the joy of singing in a group.

When did you realise you were on to something pretty special?

It was special even from the first night when 70 people rocked up to a tiny bar, The Bearded Lady, in West End, Brisbane. The electric feeling that sparks across the crowd when the song actually comes together in three-part harmony after 90 minutes is amazing.

Do you have a standout gig?

It was unforgettably awesome to sing the Powderfinger song, ‘My Happiness’, with John Collins from Powderfinger actually onstage accompanying the crowd on guitar. But I think weirdly my favourite gig was just recently in Brisbane, where 650 people sang ‘Tubthumping (I Get Knocked Down)’

by Chumbawamba. On face value it would’ve been a really standard night, but the crowd was joyful beyond compare, and the night had the most positive feel of any Pub Choir night yet.

Brisbane is home to Pub Choir, so we’re thrilled you’re bringing it to Darwin. Are you planning to take it around Australia? Around the world?!

We do have a few fun places booked around Australia, including Adelaide and Hobart. I’d love to make it to the west coast sometime

soon as well... I’ve never been very far out west, but I hear it’s beautiful. I don’t know if I have any worldwide domination plans...

I reckon I could be an old woman before I’ve explored even half of the places in Australia!

How do you choose the songs that you teach at Pub Choir – and can you reveal the song that you’ve chosen to perform in Darwin?

I agonise over song choices – I want them to be achievable, easy, and well known, with some uplifting element in the lyrics so that it feels good to yell it with hundreds of others. I only reveal Pub Choir songs one or two days before the event. Something I’ve learned over the life of Pub Choir is that if I focus too much on the song, or announce it too early, people will often start to focus on the song as the most important part of the evening – but it most definitely is not! Pub Choir is all about the joyful experience of making art with strangers over the course of 90 minutes, and the song is kind of secondary to that. There is no song in the world that everybody will like, so I’d rather people come for the new experience. But... I am looking at a really great Aussie tune for the Darwin show.

Anything else we need to know to prepare ourselves for our first Pub Choir experience?

Just come with a willingness to try new things and to listen to the instructions. The nights that always work best are those where the crowd is happy to learn something new, rather than just sing the song exactly the way they always have.

Sam Carmody

arwin based songwriter Sam Carmody is a double-threat wordsmith. The NT Song of the Year finalist is also a highly acclaimed

novelist – but it’s his musical stylings that will be celebrated this month when he joins the line-up for Live on Fridays. Carmody spoke to Off The Leash about how he stokes both literary fires.

Can you tell us a bit about the style of music you play?

To be dramatic about it, which I’m prone to, music for me occupies a kind of emotional flood plain.

I tend to write about everything that I’m overwhelmed by, the things I fret about, the things that can’t easily be intellectualised or contained by neat sentences, or even really by words themselves. I don’t tend to write music when I’m clear-headed and have something coherent to say, I go to my guitar when I’m literally lost for words. So I guess it’s a pretty emotive style of folk music. Yearning. Looking for answers. Trying to make sense of things.

Who are the musicians you grew up listening to? Have they had an influence on your musical journey?

In our house there was a lot of folk music – Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell. All were certainly huge influences on me. Then Mum and Dad went through that classical phase in the 90s that a lot of boomers did, listening to Pavarotti.

I became obsessed with these big, operatic arias that were all about love as matters of life and death.

‘Nessun Dorma’ was my favourite

tune – which probably explains a lot about why my songs are as emotional as they are.

When you’re not writing songs, you’re writing critically acclaimed novels. The Windy Season won the 2017 Readings Prize for new literature, judged by Australian author Christos Tsiolkas. What’s it been like to have such a wonderful reception to your work?

I was elated by the response from Tsiolkas because he is a hero of mine. But I’ve also tried my best not to get too attached to praise or criticism, as hard as that is – both can be fatal. The worst thing is for a writer to write towards praise, or to write in an attempt to avoid criticism. I think an artist’s obligations are primarily to truth – being true to themselves and to how they experience the world, without fear about how that will be received by others.

Do you have a first love when it comes to writing? Song writing or writing fiction? And how do you make sure you tend to both of these creative outlets?

When I was younger, I always wanted to be a painter. I think

music does something very similar.

Its language is more emotional than intellectual. It detects light and shadow and colour. I think I’m more emotional than logical by nature, which makes music come more easily.

When something tragic happens, our instinct isn’t to rush to analyse how the situation arose, but first to emotionally respond to it. To cry or rage – which is music, I think.

And when we are truly at our limits, emotionally speaking, it can be impossible to digest words on a page. Sometimes the only thing we can understand in that kind of moment is a song.

As for tending to both writing and song writing, that happens at very different times of the day. I write first thing in the morning when my mind is clear and empty. And I’ll pick up the guitar towards the end of the day, when the brain and heart is heavy and overfilled and when the banks have burst again.

Curated by former Chorale music director Nora Lewis, the program will feature ‘Blame it on the Bossa Nova’, ‘El Cumbanchero’, ‘El Condor Pasa’, ‘Bailamos’, ‘How High the Moon’, ‘Guantanamera’ and ‘It Had Better Be Tonight’.

These well-loved tunes have been arranged especially for choir and will be sung by the full 50-voice Chorale, who will also perform

beautiful sacred pieces in the jazz/ Latin style.

“I am not the Chorale’s Music Director any more, but it was agreed that I could conduct a concert from time to time, with repertoire of my choice. I have always liked this genre of music and wanted to have some fun with it,” explains Lewis.

The choir will be accompanied by an instrumental combo consisting of a standard rhythm section – piano, guitar, bass and drums – as well as two trumpets, tenor sax and trombone, plus an array of Latin percussion to – in Lewis’ words – “zizz everything up”.

Shalom Kaa will perform the popular ‘Despacito’, with the Chorale and the audience joining in. The Chorale’s guitarist Francis Diatschenko is also a soloist in his own right and will be playing a couple of solos showcasing his affinity with flamenco/gypsy music.

Also helping with the ‘zizz’ will be guest dancers from Samba Darwin, livening up several of the songs with salsa, cha cha, samba and tango – wearing typical carnival costume… feathers, sequins – and not much else!

Howlin’ Wolf! He was an absolute giant both musically and physically and, going from videos I’ve seen and stories I’ve read, had such a commanding stage presence. It would have been amazing to stand in the same room as him.

Whose posters did you have stuck to the wall as a teenager?

Once again, it was Silverchair.

Unfortunately I don’t have the posters anymore – totally should have kept them!

What song would you like played at your funeral?

Not something I’ve really thought about, but the first song that comes to mind right now is Tom Waits’ ‘Hold On’.

Finish this sentence. The thing people would be surprised to know about me… is that I’m so scared of mushrooms that I often tell waiters and waitresses at restaurants that I’m allergic to them so that they don’t end up on my plate!
