July is here, dear, gentle reader (guess who bingewatched the latest season of Bridgerton…) and you know what the arrival of this magical month means? It’s Darwin Fringe Festival time, baby.
A wonderful, diverse entourage of local and visiting creatives unleash 10 art-filled days upon us, with a program packed with fun things sure to push at least five of your buttons. Exciting news this year is improved accessibility, with Auslan interpretations for some shows, plus satellite events outside of the CBD. Tickets remain at an average cost of $20, which means you can get a nice dose of art without breaking the bank.
We are proud to return as a Media Partner of Darwin Fringe for another year – we crush on this festival pretty hard – so you’ll see us kicking around, having a hoot, sampling some art with bite!
Of course, being this time of year, festival season is in full swing. In the tropical Top End, Daminmin Festival returns to Limilngan-Wulna Country, just down the Kakadu Highway, for a camping weekend packed with culture and film.
Flickerfest returns to Darwin and Katherine to prove once again that big things come in small packages, and Deckchair Cinema has programmed a bunch of gems for you to enjoy in the balmy Dry season weather, including a special screening to celebrate NAIDOC Week.
If you’re a Tina Turner fan, Darwin Entertainment Centre has something very exciting for you, or if you can’t go past a good ol’ band of Darwin legends, then Straight Skirt’s EP launch at Darwin Railway Club is your jam. There's also a sweet free NAIDOC Week gig in Mparntwe/ Alice Springs featuring hip-hoppers Jacob Ridgeway and Mr Rhodes. Find out about these and more in Music.
As always – because we are so spoilt in the NT – there’s some beautiful art on display at our many wonderful art galleries. If you’re desert-based or passing through, don’t forget to stop by Araluen Arts Centre to see Ground Swell, an exhibition commemorating 40 years of the Red Centre arts and cultural institution.
July is a busy time in the Territory. Pore over the pages of this edition to choose your own adventure!

to Darwin Fringe You Are Come As
Darwin’s about to get a little bit louder, wilder and weirder, as the underbelly of our thriving creative scene is exposed, unleashing the goods upon us over 10 art-filled days at Darwin Fringe Festival.
By Tierney White
F
ROM MODEST BEGINNINGS back in the 80s as part of the Bougainvillea Festival, these days known as Darwin Festival, Darwin Fringe has grown into a beautiful, magical beast, the 2024 program teeming with music, theatre, dance, cabaret, and more.
Hannah Illingworth returns to the helm as Artistic Director, and says Darwin Fringe stays true to its ethos of providing accessible and affordable art for all, with some exciting developments this year.
“An exciting new feature, that makes some existing features even better, is that we received a grant from Arts NT to get some additional access support, which includes having our Opening Night interpreted in Auslan, as well as a couple of the performances. That’s been something we’ve been working on for about four years, so that’s an exciting feature for us,” she says.
Darwin Fringe casts its net even further in 2024 where accessibility is concerned. A larger range of demographics have been considered in the program, and the Festival’s tentacles reach beyond the confines of the CBD.
“I’m very excited. My favourite part about Darwin, and I’ve only been up there a couple of times, is that everyone is so welcoming … it’s very relaxed and the audiences are all really attentive,” she says.
Lucas also notes the opportunities fringe festivals provide for audience members.
“I think getting in front of new audiences [is important], the variety of performance styles is so broad … I think there is something for everyone. Even if you’re going for a musical act, I’m sure those people might be surprised to … experience different art forms.”
“We’ve got two cool, fun events that have popped up – two parties, out of the hubs and away from the city. The Wet After Fifty pool party at Nightcliff is for people aged 50-plus, and we’ve also got Club Krock at Club Tropical at Lee Point, which is an all-abilities disco. So, there’s a good spread of the party this year, which is really nice.”
With venues dotted around town, punters can soak up the Fringe experience in Winnellie – at a secret location, so watch this space – and the northern suburbs, plus Darwin Entertainment Centre, Bustard Town, and the heart of Fringe, Brown’s Mart Precinct.
Tickets remain affordable as the average ticket price hovers around the twenty-dollar mark, plus there’s a bunch of free events to enjoy. Community groups also see the benefits of the beast, as the opportunity to be included in the program has seen their shows sell like hot cakes, likely to sell out by the time Opening Night rolls around. This is also your friendly reminder to book your hot tix so you don’t miss out.
Adding to the excitement of Fringe is the opportunity to see creativity from around the country. Beth Lucas is an alt-country singer songwriter hailing from Queensland and relishes the opportunity to return to Darwin Fringe after her debut last year.
Whilst Darwin Fringe provides punters the chance to experience work beyond Territory borders, it also allows Territorians to flex their creative muscles to an engaged audience, ready to gobble up whatever it is they’ve got to dish out.
Floopy's Fuzzled Feelings comes to you from the Central Australian desert, presented by Jasmine Story and Betty Sweetlove, aka Sweet Story Theatre Co. The duo welcomes the chance to share their work with Top End audiences.
“Performing at Fringe allows us to contribute to the amazing Territorian performance art on showcase at the Festival,” they say.
“As artists from the Central Desert, our practices and the show have been so enriched by our local arts community, which has such a positive and supportive attitude to creating new works. We're so excited to share an example of the creativity that comes from our community known for its regional art.”
No matter which way your 2024 experience rolls out, Illingworth says everyone is safe to experience what Darwin Fringe has to offer.
“One of the things I really love about Fringe is that you can really come as you are. That, to me, seems super important in social spaces these days, and I love that you can come as you are as an artist, or an audience member … and that feels really special,” she says.
“What people are sharing is so bold and so brave, and they really offer us an opportunity to reflect and celebrate. It’s just been really nice to try and curate more of those spaces.”

Tactile Arts’ Dragonfly Makers Market returns to create a buzz, as more than 80 local creatives gather on the lawns of the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT).
By Jenna Hoare
AIL ALONG TO meet incredibly talented Top End artisans, crafters and designers, selling their wares while the sea breeze fans your face. Blissful, right?
Tactile Arts’ Retail Manager and Exhibition Coordinator Ekat Kouzionis is a ceramicist by trade, and also runs pottery workshops with the community arts organisation. She says the Makers Markets, formerly known as Craft Fairs, are a hit with artisans and shoppers alike.
“We have grown within the last 12 months. More people want to be in our markets – we receive more and more applications every time!”
Kouzionis, who also has a stall at the market, started her crafting journey after undertaking an eight-week pottery class seven years ago.
“I just kept going from there, and I never thought I’d make a career out of it. I kept signing up for the next lot of classes and then one day someone asked, ‘can I buy a mug?’.”
This year’s Dry season Makers Market holds a mixture of local favourites and some new artists emerging on the scene.
THERE’S SOMETHING SPECIAL about unearthing precious memories and experiences, the sense of nostalgia when you feel as you think back to ‘those days’. And when these times are a shared, collective experience, it’s nice to connect with others that remember, too.
The Library & Archives of the Northern Territory (LANT) is on the hunt for your historical Territorian tales, with applications for the next round of the NT History Grants now open.
The program was established in 1978 when the NT achieved self-governance, designed to capture, celebrate and document important historical events or stories from around the NT. It’s seen
“Helen Menzies Pottery will have her popular stall on display, and silversmith Francis Ricketts will be showcasing handmade jewellery. Hunnah James is a new artist to look out for, with her paperbark and watercolour works. She recently held her first solo exhibition with Tactile Arts,” says Kouzionis.
“There will be live music, the Tactile Arts’ shop will be open, an exhibition featuring Cal Power’s work will be on display, and artists in residence will hold a mini exhibition in the studios.”
Flit your way on over to the Dragonfly Makers Market, enjoy the sights and sounds of the Arafura Sea, and snag yourself some locally-made goodies. Not a bad way to spend a Dry season Sunday at all.

DAMINMIN WIN WIN for the
Celebrating its fourth year on Limilngan-Wulna Country, the Daminmin Arts and Culture Festival is a growing grassroots event, and a must on your Dry season calendar.
By Jenna Hoare
TAKE A SHORT road trip from Darwin along the Kakadu Highway and you’ll find the leafy property of Lynette and Graham Kenyon –the Traditional Owners, Custodians, cultural guides, and founders of Pudakul Aboriginal and Cultural Tours.
The Kenyon family and Darwin Community Arts (DCA) carefully curate the Daminmin Festival each year, inviting attendees to connect on Country over three magical days. DCA Creative Producer and rural resident Anna Weekes says the event sprung from a series of workshops with Pudakul.
"We were dreaming about a festival ... We wanted to highlight the Traditional Owners living in the rural area, who live a life very connected to their Country and culture.”
Festival goers can soak up First Nations’ music, art, and culture – all while camping on lush grounds with spectacular views overlooking the water lilies floating on Pudakul Billabong.
Adding to the impressive talent on stage, Moginie performs alongside Territory-born singer-songwriter Leah Flanagan, debuting their album on Saturday evening.
"The Moiya Experience is new this year. That's the bush tucker experience on Thursday night … it's going to be incredible,” Weekes says.
The 2024 program has evolved from an on-Country collab between Jim Moginie, founding member of Midnight Oil, and Grant Kenyon.
“This is the first time Jim has been involved with Daminmin Festival and it's been a beautiful thing. This is new music and a new collaboration.”
"It is an absolute pleasure and honour to be able to present these new songs with the incredible Jim Moginie for this year's Daminmin Festival. To perform these songs publicly for the first time by the beauty of the Pudakul billabong is going to be magical,” Flanagan says.
Visual artist Christabel Blackman has also teamed up with Lynette and Tarizma Kenyon to create a series of installations.
While there’s plenty on at this family-friendly event –weaving, clap stick making, bush foods and medicine, dyeing techniques and drawing sessions – Weekes says the festival invites you to unwind in nature.
“Attendees can kick back under the stars to watch local short films screened as part of the NT Travelling Film Festival. Please book ahead, even if you attend only by donation, and please donate what you can for this Top End community festival.”

PERFORMING ARTS
TRACKS, BUT MAKE THEM FRESH
Something many of us look forward to throughout the year is the latest dose of dance from the creative team at Tracks Dance Company.
As part of this year’s Darwin Fringe, they’re dishing out a delicious little smorgasbord of treats, all wrapped up neatly in one hour.
By Tierney White
RESH TRACKS OFFERS Tracks’ movers and shakers the chance to present short dance works whilst exploring the craft of choreography. Kelly Beneforti is Fresh Tracks Curator, also Tracks Dance Animateur, and says it’s an important happening on Tracks’ annual calendar.
“Fresh Tracks has been an ongoing part of our program, and each year we aim to support new experimental dance work to be made. Each year, there’s a different collection of artists, all local – except this year, we’re really excited to be supporting an artist from Alice Springs to come up,” she says.
“All the works are new, made for Fresh Tracks, and people can expect to see dance works that explore a range of different concepts and different movement approaches, it's an opportunity to test the waters of different ideas, ways of working, and collaborations.”
The program each year is unique to the collection of artists that are involved, which makes for an exciting process for the artists, as well as the audience.
Learning Through Shared Laughter
SHOWCASING SOME OF Australia’s funniest comedians with disability or chronic illness, Are You Pulling My Leg? is a raucous accessible comedy show, boasting a line-up of award-winning performers. Presented by Accessible Arts and Crips & Creeps, in cahoots with Arts on Tour, it provides entertaining and uncensored insights into disability.
Crips & Creeps is the brainchild of comedian Madeleine Stewart who was born missing her left hand and forearm, an inclusive comedy club in Sydney that champions accessibility and comedians who are marginalised due to sexuality, race, gender or disability. Are You Pulling My Leg? is Stewart’s baby, born from Crips & Creeps, who says comedy is a great conduit to discuss serious issues.
“I think that comedy is the perfect medium to advocate for change. It’s not very preachy, we’re simply just sharing our experiences in a funny
“[The artists] have the energy and momentum in this particular moment in time to make something and put it out there in the world.”
Four short but sweet works are presented this month, featuring members of the Tracks family including the Grey Panthers and the 2024 Youth Dance Leadership Program, casting the net wide on what audience members can expect to see.
There’s also a performance from Alice Springs artist Miriam Nicholls, and a collaboration between Tara Schmidt and Jenelle Saunders. Beneforti says it’s important that artists are given as much creative freedom as possible.
“The program’s curated in the sense of selecting the artists on where their energy’s at and what’s happening in and around Tracks, but there’s no theme or any direction given to the artists in terms of what they need to make.”
If you could do with a hit, make tracks to Darwin Fringe, support local creatives, and allow them to administer the freshest dose of dance.
way, and people can let their guard down … we’re just sharing how it is in a very funny way, and also in a way that gets people thinking,” she says.
“It’s really nice, it’s really chill, it’s a good way to talk to people about issues that otherwise would have made people feel uncomfortable.”
The performance is live-captioned and Auslan interpreted, to help everyone get the punchlines. Stewart says the national tour is designed to highlight issues faced by artists where accessibility is concerned.
“With our show, and our partnership with Accessible Arts, they come in and train every venue we visit on disability competence and accessibility … to make this kind of lasting impact in the arts scene, because it’s absolutely needed, especially in the comedy industry,” she says.
“One of our acts on the line-up,
By Tierney White
Oliver Hunter, is a wheelchair user, and very few comedy clubs are accessible for him to do his work … We’re really trying to push for accessibility, not only in regional towns, but also cities.”
Also joining Stewart and Hunter on stage to dish out the laughs is Bec Charlwood, Irene Nicola and Sam Wade. Head along and support this show and these award-winning comedians, and help make a difference. Stewart says you’re in for an informative time and a good chuckle.
“If we’re going to learn and grow, I think humour’s the best way to do it. Learning through shared laughter is what I call it – we’re all together in a room having a good laugh!”

SHORT’N’SWEET
YOW KNOW, SIZE isn’t everything. And as the saying goes, big things come in small packages. This is true in the world of cinema.
Flickerfest returns for a 33rd year to present two huge programs of short but sweet flicks in Darwin and Katherine, retaining its place as Australia’s leading Academy Qualifying and BAFTA Recognised short film festival.
Festival Director Bronwyn Kidd says this year’s competition attracted a record 3,400 entries.
“There was no shortage of film gems to choose from, and the quality and range of themes in the Flickerfest program this year is exceptional,” she says.
“I’m really proud of the diversity of stories and storytellers we get to represent in our programs – from
the NT, across Australia, and around the world – and to share these inspiring and entertaining shorts with our audiences in Katherine and Darwin.”
Two exciting additions this year sees Territory talent projected onto the big screen.
Darwin Story is penned by Natasha Tonkin, a Darwin-born artist and animator who currently resides in the UK. Tonkin’s upbringing in Darwin is the inspiration behind her intricate and finely crafted semi-autobiographical animated film, reflecting on her own return home after a long period away.
First Drop also celebrates NT talent. Ted is a reclusive and bitter retiree, tasked with caring for his Pakistani neighbour’s eight-year-old daughter, Saleha, and an unlikely friendship ensues. This moving
production is set in Alice Springs, written and directed by Damon van der Schuit, and produced by Emma Alix Smith and Bridget May, featuring a large cast and crew of Alice Springs locals.
Embrace the world of small but mighty film and pull up a pew at Flickerfest for bite-sized tales from around the world.

Well, here’s your chance to experience the powerful energy of a live performance in a true tribute to a music icon, as Tina: The Ultimate Tribute to the Queen of Rock 'n' Roll energises the Top End stage for one night only.
South African-born lead singer Caroline Borole says she’s prepared her whole life to bring that well-known, big and bold energy to audiences in celebration of one of the greatest female rock 'n' roll singers of all time.
“Tina Turner influenced me as an artist growing up … I resonated with Tina because she was so very different. She became sort of a part
of me, growing in my musicality.”
Barole recently touched down on Aussie soil as part of a 10-piece band for their first non-stop tour around the country.
“We’ve been to Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne [so far] … I’ve always loved hearing about Australia but experiencing it is something else. This will be our first time in Darwin,” she says.
“We are a huge band because it’s Tina – you either go big or go home. We’ve got bass, we’ve got guitar and keyboard, and saxophone, we’ve got two amazing vocalists who are beautiful singers and powerful singers in their own right, and we’ve got amazing dancers."
KEEP THE FIRE Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud is the 2024 NAIDOC Week theme, amplified this month in an electrifying concert free for the whole community.
Jacob Ridgeway (Worimi/Gamilaroi) and Mr Rhodes (Bundjalung/Yaegl) are both boundary-pushing First Nations artists hailing from NSW, whose music celebrates stories of social justice, identity, and resistance.

Resonating deeply with his audiences, his latest single ‘I’m Not Coming Home’ explores a powerful journey of survival and staying true to his identity.
Hip-hop fans rejoice as Mr Rhodes brings his powerhouse talent to Mparntwe, in celebration of the rich cultural history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. One of the founding members of Teddy Louis King, Mr Rhodes has a skillful, genre-crossing style, fusing electronic, hip-hop and soul in tracks that set the stage on fire. triple j listeners are in for a treat as he performs his energetic hit singles, including ‘Wonderous’ and ‘Can’t You Tell’.

STRAIGHT Skirt
Don’t you just love it when an old fave returns?
Straight Skirt formed in 2008, and played a bunch of music venues around Darwin, including the OG Happy Yess in Bennett Street. In fact, two of the band members were instrumental (see what we did there?) in getting the grassroots live music venue off the ground.
By Tierney White
THIS MONTH, THEY return to another fave Darwin haunt – Darwin Railway Club – to unleash their brand-spankin’ new debut LP, Straight Skirt.
Original band members include Gretchen Ennis, Zeb Olsen, Rod Balaam and Bill Searle, but due to availability at the time of recording the album, Finn Williams stepped in for Searle and continues to do so at The Rails this month. Although, we have it on good authority you can expect a sweet cameo from Searle.
Armed with arguably some of the best chemistry you could find in a band, Ennis says Straight Skirt was forged from friendship.
“Zeb and I became friends in Darwin, and we kind of both really liked each other’s bands, so we went, ‘let’s make a band’, and so that was the inspiration, our relationship really. As we became friends, we became a band,” she says.
“We got closer through writing and playing, and we both had kids of similar age – her daughter Asher and my son Lindsay … So yeah, it formed from our friendship and our desire just to make more music.”
Straight Skirt was recorded in the summer of 2019 and 2020, in an all-analogue studio in an old barn
By Tierney White
in Campbells Creek in Victoria, just before the pandemic threw a spanner in the works. After playing a few gigs in Melbourne, and officially launching the album in Castlemaine in January this year, Darwin crowds are in for a treat for the band’s homecoming launch.
“It’s a really fresh take on some older songs, but there’s just the excitement of us being together,” Ennis says.
“Bands are like relationships, and this is a long-term one that’s kind of been on-and-off over the years – when we’re together, we just love being together because we don’t get that chance a lot. There’s that excitement of just being in love with one another, it’s good chemistry, and because we’ve played together for so long, there’s a really nice familiarity.”
Supported by local pals Scrub Fowl – featuring Ennis’ son Lindsay – and Tang, this homecoming launch featuring some absolute legends of the Darwin music scene at an iconic venue is set to be a hoot and a half.

POWER-UP Parade
Boogie to the theme from Super Mario Brothers at City of Palmerston’s Geekfest, as the Darwin Symphony Orchestra (DSO) hits the streets with an entourage of their Young Artists and friends.
NEVER AN ARTS org to shy away from unique experiences, the Power-Up Parade allows the DSO to engage with audiences beyond the Berrimah Line. DSO Young Artists Program Coordinator Nick Yates says everyone’s invited to be part of the fun.
“Myself, a couple of DSO musicians, and a couple of DSO Young Artists will be there as part of Palmerston Youth Festival, and we’re helping kids, adults, teenagers – whoever wants to, young and old – be part of the fun,” he says.
Participants are invited to create an instrument influenced by the characters of Super Mario Brothers – channel your inner Mario or Luigi with trumpets made from pipes or beat a drum a la Bowser style. There’s a short rehearsal before this noisy cohort proudly parades through Geekfest.
“Last year, we did bucket drums and lagerphones – bottle caps on a stick – trumpets made from pipes and funnels,” Yates says.
“The workshop in instrument
making is from five until seven, and we’ll have some masks and costumes, then at seven-thirty, we’ll do a big parade through Goyder Square – through the market stalls and everything playing the Super Mario Brothers theme.”
Geekfest is the Territory's biggest comic con and kicks off this year’s Palmerston Youth Festival, dishing out a week of free and fun activities.
The 2024 Geekfest features cosplay, board games, face painting, virtual reality gaming, a silent disco, K-Pop, and more, and there’s also an immersive light experience facilitated by Northern Lights NT to take you on a futuristic journey.
If you’re ready to hit the streets and be part of the DSO for a night, engage your Star Power and join the Power-Up Parade.
