With the ripples of this pandemic being felt far and wide, the impact on the Top End arts and events community has been hard to watch. It certainly hasn’t been easy to write about.

Empowering Young Territory

Northern Territory Youth Week (NTYW) celebrates the contributions of, and provides a platform for, the Northern Territory’s young people.

echnically held over 10 days, NTYW gives the Territory's young people the chance to get involved, have some fun and make decisions.

Of course, recent developments surrounding the coronavirus have changed plans, but even if live events won’t be rolling out across the NT, and online platforms are utilised instead, it’s still an important time to shine a light on the NT’s young people.

City of Darwin Youth Programs Coordinator Lisa Burnett says NTYW gives young people a platform that they mightn’t normally have access to.

“It highlights the contributions of young people in the community, acknowledges the times and the places we live in, and makes the issues young people face more visible,” she says.

and learned valuable lessons from the experience.

Behind the scenes, preparations have seen the Territory’s young folk organise events at the Youth Round Table. This year, two ambassadors were selected to lead the line.

17-year-old Sean Xiao represents Central Australia. Based in Alice Springs, Sean volunteers at the Headspace Youth Advisory Group, at school holiday programs, and a number of youth forums and national events to speak on behalf of young people.

Going in to bat for the Top End is 20-year-old Eytahnyia Scott, a proud Larrakia woman who works as Team Leader for the Larrakia Nation Social and Emotional Wellbeing Program.

Lisa says it’s integral to have young people driving the program.

“It’s also a good chance to have a little bit of focus and spotlight on youth culture.”

NT Youth Week Coordinator Olivia Paris of the Office of Youth Affairs says the 2020 theme, like previous years, was a result of consulting with young people around the NT. “This year’s theme is Empower 2020, which inspires a stronger future for young people in the NT, celebrates the diversity of young people and encourages young people’s vision for the NT. It’s to inspire, celebrate and encourage.”

“NT Youth Week always has lots of young people coordinating including being paid to produce events. Providing young performers and emcees paid work – including the LAUNCH media team – gives them the opportunity to tell their own stories, in a supported environment.”

When it comes to youth involvement, it’s not just about giving young people a voice, but also about giving them the tools to succeed on their own terms.

I guess I was always a creative kid.

I got into origami when I was 14 as a form of meditation and fell in love with the practice.

OTL caught up with this month’s cover artist, 18-year-old Leila Heinrich.

Your work appears on the cover of this month’s edition – can you tell us a bit about it?

So that was part of my Year 12 Arts Project – our school wanted us to enter them into MAGNT. It’s always great to get that recognition and it was a lovely feeling when I found out it’d been selected.

That one I called Pledge of Hope, and it’s one part of a three-tree set. I’ve done the calculations – there’s 500 pieces of individual paper cranes and each one took me about two minutes. Including the wire work and gluing, it’s over 24 hours. That’s a lot of TV seasons on Netflix!

What inspired your work?

It’s based on a thing called an

enneagram, which is a weird niche thing on the ideas of people as the perfectionist, the helper and the achiever. Those are types one to three, and then there are three separate types of the nine overall types. In a way, it’s about the beauty we see as humans and the way we look at the world.

Do you have a favourite artist or a particular style of art that you like?

Not really. I did look at different artists as part of my study, but I wasn’t looking to emulate different artists, I was trying to get my own ideas into my work.

What are your plans for the future?

Do they involve art?

I’m currently at SA Uni doing a Bachelor of Journalism and a Bachelors of Arts. I’m hoping to have something to do with the creative side of things – I’m always creating things at home and in my own time. Art is mainly how I keep sense of everything.

Q&A WHEN 19-YEAR-OLD Max Conaghan isn’t studying for his film degree or hitting up the freelance scene, he’s usually making short films with his mates.

So Max, what inspired you to be a filmmaker?

I loved acting and telling funny stories and jokes as a kid, so I think initially I was inspired to make films as a way to get in front of the camera, and to try and make the people around me laugh!

Tell us about your filmmaking experience so far.

I’ve been part of dozens of short films with my friends up here in Darwin, as well as doing freelance photography and video for various people and companies over the years.

I was also flown to the 2018 Bond University Film & Television Awards (BUFTA) as a finalist for my film Bailey.

What advice would you give to other filmmakers?

Just shoot it! You’ll always be your own worst critic, so just mute that voice in your head and make what you want to make. It’s better to make a film you don’t love and learn from it, than to never have

made it at all.

What’s your favourite scene from a movie and why?

Most recently, my favourite scene is from Peanut Butter Falcon when the two main characters first set off on their adventure together. The dialogue in the scene was perfectly written, and both actors hit the nail on the head with their performance.

What are your plans for the future?

This industry has so many amazing opportunities, so honestly, my only plan for the future is to finish my film degree in Melbourne and continue to explore everything filmmaking has to offer.

I’ve got a few promising ideas for Darwin films that I’m quite excited about, so keep an eye out!

Q&A with comedian Andre Price-Quintner

18-YEAR-OLD local comedian and actor Andre Price-Quintner is navigating his way through the Top End Comedy scene.

OTL caught up with him for a chat.

What inspired you to get into comedy?

Well, I was already passionate about acting and performing in front of people, and I saw a post on Facebook looking for people to give comedy a crack. I thought I might as well give it a go!

What’s the comedy scene like in the Top End? There’s pretty much a comedy

Who’s your favourite comedian and why?

My favourite comedian would have to be Dave Chappelle. His jokes are so well crafted, and they appeal to the dark side of comedy, which I really enjoy watching and performing.

What can audiences expect to see at one of your shows?

Audiences can expect something out of the ordinary. I never really

ever use the same joke or story twice, so every show I do is pretty much different from the last.

Have you got any hot tips for other young comedians?

The best tip is just to give it a crack, and when you’re writing material to stay true to yourself. Incorporate your own personality and make it your brand.

And finally… what are your plans for the future?

My passion is acting and that’s something I want to pursue as a potential career. Later this year, I’m going to audition for drama universities all over Australia.

OP ENDERS ARE in for a treat early next month, with the inaugural Arafura Pearl: A Festival of Women in the Brown’s Mart Courtyard precinct.

Emceed by comedian Amy Hetherington, the all-female program includes musician Serina Pech, comedian Danielle Andrews, and Shayne and Treacey – the bogan alter egos of local actors Gail Evans and Nicki Fearn, as well as guest speakers.

We caught up with Arafura Festival Producer, Stage Manager and Performer, Tracey Bunn, for a chat.

Tell us about Arafura Pearl Festival!

It’s something that’s been brewing for a while in my mind. I’m a strong

advocate for gender equality, particularly in the music industry, myself being performer for over 30 years, and I’ve come across that inequality through my own touring and travels. I feel Darwin has an incredible field of amazing female talent and they haven’t had the opportunities that male performers might get.

It’s not about being anti-male, but it is about the stats. You just have to look at any event poster – take the men off and see how many names are left.

We’ve tried to get a good balance of age, genre, experience, so there’s something for everyone!

What has the response been like?

Tracey Bunn

The response has been overwhelming! So many women want to be involved as performers, but I’ve had to knock half of them back due to funding limitations. We’ve got a full program, and that’s without interstate or international performers.

What are some of the opportunities for women?

The festival is a celebration of women in Darwin – not just creatively, but in production roles.

I want to be able to grow this festival to provide mentoring opportunities for women. We’ve had some really great support from Kelly Blumberg from Brown’s Mart Theatre and Teghan Hughes from Happy Yess, who have provided the venue and support.

Arafura Pearl A Festival of Women A top up on cash from Gender Equity for production costs has meant we can pay our female production team on par with what men are paid. Each production staff member will pair with a young woman for mentoring in that area.

With everything that’s happening in the world right now, what are some of the challenges the festival is facing?

The good news is we have received our funding, so everyone will get paid whether the event can go ahead or not. We have some strategies in place for containing the spread of germs. We’d like to have a cashless bar so there’s no exchange of money, and will have signs up to promote hand washing.

Lastly, the festival’s name – Arafura Pearl – tell us about it!

The festival was named after Kathy Mills’ song, Arafura Pearl, which is listed as an icon by the NT Heritage Society. I hadn’t settled on a name, and a few people suggested it because of its connection with Darwin – it’s very local and has a very strong sense of place.

It also comes from an incredible family of women, the Mills family.

I spoke to them about it and they were very happy to have the name used. June Mills will sing the song after doing a Welcome to Country.

MULTI-DISCIPLINARY ARTIST, Larrakia Elder and contemporary storyteller, Aunty June Mills has big plans to bring her unique show, Witladla, to the Top End.

cultural knowledge and a range of puppets, Witladla provides pre-school aged children with a fun and exciting opportunity to engage with Larrakia language.

The performance, which is currently being adapted as an early language book through an Indigenous Languages grant, focuses on Witladla, a little owl, and his journey to recover his lost necklace.

And Aunty June says it’s important experiences like this continue to keep language and culture alive.

With references to traditional Larrakia designs and fun interactions, it’s sure to be an important learning experience for the little ones.

“There is still a stigma to mental health, especially with male mental health. We’re still asked to suppress some of those emotions and how we’re feeling and that can be a danger. One of my own pathways to help deal with depression was to talk to people about it, just so they knew it was okay to tell people, ‘hey, I’m not coping’.”

“I feel a sense of responsibility and I don’t want to just leave people at the curtain call, it’s almost a duty of care to keep the audience safe from triggers and emotions, and make sure we’re there to help deal with them.”

LAST MONTH, KELLY GULLIVER competed against other budding Territory comedians for a chance to represent the NT in the national Raw Comedy final.

Despite the NT comp being just her second stand up performance, she took out the title. Will Crawford caught up with Kelly for a chat.

Kelly, congrats on your win at Raw Comedy! What was it like to perform in front of 650 people?

Epic. Such a buzz, I loved every moment of it!

You’re an acclaimed poet and a Wild Words regular. How does poetry compare to stand up and did your poetry background help?

Absolutely yes, they are both very cathartic. Poetry is deep and can

take you both in to and out of a dark place. It helps me to work through feelings of pain and confusion.

Comedy is light and fun. It’s exhilarating because you receive constant feedback throughout the performance. They can both be used as a form of healing and storytelling. Writing poetry and reading it to my friends at Wild Words has given me the confidence to do this.

What do you get up to when you’re not winning stand-up competitions?

I work as a financial counsellor and am the NT representative for Financial Counselling Australia. I’m a mum to three teenagers, I play the ukulele and netball, enjoy cycling and solo car karaoke. My all-time favourite thing to do is to spend time in nature, camping with friends and family.

What was the inspiration behind your Raw Comedy routine?

I had a completely different set prepared. But I went to a yoga workshop with the intention of coming out of it feeling at peace

and loving myself sick in preparation for my heat. It was born from there! Literally three days before the heat... The story I told on stage is about what happened at that workshop – well my little twist on it anyway.

Who encouraged you to enter Raw? My good mates Darren McCallum and Shele Parker Black from Wild Words.

How did you set about writing the routine?

I imagined saying it to a friend in my head, and then I wrote that down. I’m a bit of a storyteller – some of my poetry does that too.

I have always enjoyed recounting funny stuff to friends (with a little drama). Then I re-wrote it and re-wrote it, over and over. Every time I did this, I identified bits I could chop and bits I could add to make it funnier. I also wanted to be clever with its structure, so it finished with a bang, tying all the good bits together.

Attending a comedy writing workshop with Amy Hetherington two days before the heat helped me a lot. Performing it was epic, but

the writing process was also very satisfying.

What did your friends say when they saw your perform?

They said I was very brave and funny, so I think I’m going to keep them. Especially as I haven’t had to buy my own drinks since…

What advice would you give to others wondering if they should try stand up comedy?

Do it! And believe you can do it.

Nothing is achieved by telling yourself you can’t do it. Let your faith be greater than your fear!

Well, I’ll be Fracked!

Enjoy this look behind-the-scenes from local actor Phil O’Brien on Fracketty Frack – a comedy sci-fi web series set in the Northern Territory.

IT STARTED LIKE most neverto-be forgotten adventures. With a phone call. Young filmmaking genius Nathaniel Kelly was on the line.

He’d received funding from Screen Territory to write his new web series, Fracketty Frack, and wanted me to play a conspiracy-theory-obsessed-stubborn-eccentric-old-bushy. Of course, I said yes.

Nathaniel is extremely talented and as a conspiracy-theory-obsessed-stubborn-eccentric-old-bushy, this felt like the role for me. But from day one, I learned that filming was more physically demanding than I could have imagined.

Nathaniel explained the first scene involved myself and Haylee Wright, another actor, sprinting full speed down this dirt track. Gulp.

“Was that full speed, Nathaniel?”

“Yes, sprint as fast as you two can go,” he said.

Well. Haylee is young, very athletic, and has legs like a brolga – I, on the other hand, have more of a wombat-like disposition.

‘Okay. Action!’ Yelled Nathaniel.

We took off. Haylee’s out front like Cathy Freeman about to win gold, and I’m trying to keep up like a dopey donkey.

‘Bloody hell,’ I was thinking, ‘I should have read the script more – I thought I was meant to be an old farmer… and here I am doing a Rambo!’

We did the sprint a few times so Nathaniel could capture all the angles. And the last take broke me.

My lungs were a collapsed set of bagpipes. I’d done my knee, tore my groin and pulled a muscle in my back. I felt like a bloke that had just done the Kokoda Trail, albeit on all-fours.

“Ok Phil, your fight scene’s next,” yelled Nathaniel.

“Excuse me, fight scene?”

“Yeah, it’s going to go like this Phil. You’ll get dragged out of your chair and thrown on the concrete by this big bloke, then you have to roll around with him a bit, then this other bloke is going to choke you from behind with a bit of rope and then throw you back on the concrete. Then they’re both going to jump on you and hand cuff you.”

After doing that scene four times, I was fracked.

Filming finally came to an end for the day and good old Phil ‘Action Jackson’ O’Brien staggered off into the night like a drunken sailor.

But I tell ya what, it’s been an incredible experience.

The team is awesome and the story line has more twists and turns than two pythons fighting over a trapped rat. Put May 1 in your diary people, because this web series is not to be missed.

Preserving the stories of Elders, Brother Moon is a new children’s book by local author Maree McCarthy Yoelu and illustrator Samantha Fry, published

by Magabala Books. A gentle but powerful introduction to Wadjigany country and the stories of the old people, Brother Moon invites young readers to reflect on their relationship with the natural world.

Maree McCarthy Yoelu is a Wadjigany woman, from the western Wagait region. She grew up in Daly River and now lives in Darwin where she works in radio. Maree shared her story of writing Brother Moon with Off the Leash.

THE STORY OF Brother Moon wasn’t originally intended for publication. My sister Helen shared it with me many moons ago while visiting Wadjigany country. I realised from the moment I heard it that I needed to write it down so I could share it with our children for years to come. I knew it was special.

It reminded me of the unique connection our ancestors had with the moon and the stars, and the important role it played, and still plays, in our lives.

There is a saying “when an old person dies, it’s like a library burning down”.

and our connections to country, so we could start building our own library, for all future generations of Wadjigany families and all people to benefit.

In Brother Moon, Grandpa Liman is my mother’s father (Harry Morgan, a Wadjigany Elder) and Hippy-Boy (Heath Wilson) is my nephew.

This story was told by Grandpa Liman to my nephew when he was a child. Hippy-Boy ultimately learns how his great grandfather uses the phases of the moon when he goes hunting and fishing, and why it is important for us all to have an understanding of the natural world.

I hope that it brings a sense of awe and wonder, a sense of connection to something bigger than ourselves.

I hope it shines a light on how our Elders and ancestors used the moon and the stars to guide their travels while they lived on country; and how reliant and important it is to them when living on country. I hope they look up at the moon now and know their brother is looking out for them.

I urge whoever reads this to encourage your young ones to start chatting to their Elders. Start collecting stories for your own library that can live on for years to come.

Our Elder’s stories are incredibly precious. Without them, we lose our identity, our traditions, languages, songs, dances and rituals.

When the Tides Turn 2020 IS DARWIN’S TURN to host the annual NT Writers’ Festival, an annual celebration of the written word, which is held in Alice Springs every second year.

The newly refurbished George Brown Botanic Gardens provides the perfect backdrop, and Festival Director Fiona Dorrell thinks audiences will appreciate the choice of venue.

“We are really excited about the new facilities – the outdoor setting is going to be beautiful. It’s not just for writers, but also for anyone who loves books or likes talking about contemporary issues, or even those

who just want to grab a beer at the bar.”

The theme for this years’ festival is When the Tides Turn, chosen in collaboration with established local artists. Fiona feels it sets the right tone for 2020.

“We want to have conversations about change, on both an environmental and a personal level, but more importantly, how we face the challenges that change creates.”

Originally planned for May, the festival is looking to reschedule to later in the year around October.

NT Literary Awards CALLING ALL NORTHERN TERRITORY writers – entries for the 2020 NT Literary Awards are now open!

This annual competition covers a range of categories including Short Story, Poetry, Creative Non-Fiction and more, and is a great opportunity for writers across the NT to receive acknowledgement for their creative abilities.

We had a chat with last year’s Poetry winner Sue Fielding.

Why are the NT Literary Awards important to NT writers?

It’s recognition. At least a form of recognition. What’s wonderful is to be recognised in your own state or territory – it has an additional significance. To win any award is great, but this one is special.

Pain and Glory – Deckchair Cinema Opening Night Deckchair Cinema will open its 2020 season later this year with critically acclaimed feature film, Pain and Glory, from director Pedro Almodovar.

Almodovar draws on his own life as an artist, and honours his craft as only a master filmmaker can. Anchored by the stand out performance of Antonio Banderas’ career, Pain and Glory follows aging film director, Salvador Mallo, as he recounts his life experiences – one of them in the flesh, others remembered. In rediscovering his past, Salvador finds his salvation.

H is for Happiness This Aussie family flick tells the story of relentlessly optimistic and hilariously forthright 12-year-old Candice Phee, who attempts to analyse happiness for a school project while her family is anything but happy.

Quirky, touching and vibrantly colourful, the film’s cast includes Richard Roxburgh, Deborah Mailman, Miriam Margolyes and charming newcomer, Daisy Axon.

Do you think there are enough opportunities for Territory writers to get recognition?

I think we could always get more.

There’s a solid literary tradition in the NT, especially in the last 10 years with Indigenous and collaborative works. For example the Arrernte Women’s Poetry Project in Alice Springs is a great example of community.

Congratulations on winning the Poetry award last year – will you be

entering again in 2020?

I will be, yes, most likely something to do with the terrible bushfire crisis. I’ve been thinking and writing about that, but also about my work in the hospital in Alice Springs.

How do you get to a point of manifesting words on paper?

It starts with inspiration for me – it doesn’t start with me thinking about writing, but more of a spark or a reflection of something I feel.

A movement of energy inside me, then my imagination gets involved and then the words come.

There’s a real music in poetry, it’s like writing a song, a very delicate process. Occasionally I’ll do some generative writing on the side, then I’ll return to the poem itself.

What advice would you give to writers thinking about entering?

Make sure you do! Even if you’re just starting out, have a go. It’s open to everyone and that’s wonderful.

It’s part of the journey – don’t take it too seriously, whether you win or don’t win is subjective. Don’t feel down, just keep going. Stay faithful to your writing and keep learning the craft.

Charlotte’s Web T’S EASTER TIME! But where to get your chocolate fix? If ever there was a time to throw support behind local business, it’s now.

Located in Berrimah, Charlotte’s Web Chocolate Factory first opened its doors in October 2018. Owner Kristy McInnes says her sweet business came from unexpected events.

“We lost everything when our other business, NT Adventure Park, went up in flames in 2017,” she says.

“After that, I thought it was now or never. Making chocolate had been a hobby of mine for 11 years, and I’d always wanted to open a chocolate factory. Some friends of mine encouraged me to start selling my chocolates at Christmas markets, and each year, the line-up to buy

our chocolates was even longer, so I knew there was something there.”

Charlotte’s Web began stocking chocolates at Deckchair Cinema in early 2018, the cinema supplying sweet treats for film fans ever since.

Ingredients are sourced locally and include things like mangoes that are dehydrated and coated in brown deliciousness.

Despite being open for just 14 months, Charlotte’s Web has already scored some serious accolades, including the Reader’s Choice 2020 – Café in the Australian Good Food Guide Awards. And with Easter here, there are some special treats on the menu.

“Our half eggs will blow you away!

They’re large half chocolate eggs filled with chocolate mousse and ganache. We’re also hoping to run

some fun Easter workshops, where families can design, make and eat their chocolates in the factory,” she says.

“Of course, we also have some uniquely Territorian treats, with our Crocolates. All of our chocolate is gluten free and we also have vegan chocolate available.”

The chocolate factory is open five days a week, and offers light lunch options as well as tea and coffee.

There’s also the opportunity to tuck into a tasting plate – say hello to three tiers of chocolate-coated dried fruits, truffles and, their specialty, chocolate bark.

So this year, instead of opting for Easter bunnies and chocolate treats from big chain supermarkets, hop along to see the eggsellent folks at Charlotte’s Web.

But a collaboration to run bush tucker tours with good friend and Larrakia woman, Leslie Gordon, has got her especially excited.

YANNI GREW UP ON a farm in Bali and has always been familiar with edible tropical plants. She’s spent time learning more about native plants and people in the Top End, and loves learning about new foods and landscapes.

“Seed collecting and finding wild food is like treasure hunting. My new favourite is the native peanut tree (sterculia quadrifida) the seed

pods are so beautiful, like gems of the bush,” she says.

Yanni loves her new city, and that Darwin is so close to Bali where she moved from in 2014 to follow her husband. She loves the similar weather and friendly people, and appreciates the diverse community with people of many backgrounds.

Ingredients Makes 12-15 3- 4 shallots 3-4 cloves garlic 3 tablespoons of minced ginger root 4 tablespoons of minced lemongrass stalk (centre only) 1 teaspoon of ground or fresh turmeric 2 lime leaves cut into strips 1 chilli, finely diced (optional) 1 tablespoon of desiccated dry or fresh coconut 500g of minced free-range chicken 12 lemongrass sticks cut for skewers

Method Dice the shallots, garlic, chilli and lemon grass.

Mince or very finely chop the ginger and fresh turmeric.

Cut the lime leaves into strips.

Put all of these ingredients into the mortar and pestle and mash finely.

In a bowl add this spice mix to the chicken and mix through.

Shape the mix around the end of the lemongrass sticks (make sure these are moist or soaked in a little water).

Cook these over a small charcoal barbeque or on the coals of a fire until cooked through (5-10 minutes each side).

You can use substitutes including tofu mince for a non-meat version.

Lemongrass grows really easily in the Top End, particularly in the Wet season. It can be used in a huge amount of dishes, made into tea and other drinks. As well as having a beautiful fragrant flavour, it is a very good digestive and is used to reduce high blood pressure by stimulating blood circulation and purifying the liver.

OTL caught up with them for a chat ahead of their printmaking exhibition next month.

Tell us about PRESSplay at Tactile Arts – what’s it about?

JT: Put simply, it’s about playing with the press. Amelia and I have a degree in printmaking and unfortunately there is no operational print access facility in Darwin for us to develop our skills. However, there is a press at Tactile Arts, and we were lucky enough to have been offered the Artist in Residency so that we could use it.

We hear the equipment was lying dormant at Tactile Arts for a while – what does it mean to reinvigorate these tools and produce an exhibition?

JT: The NT has a very strong legacy of printmaking that needs all the support it can get to continue. In my opinion, the prints that have been made from remote artists up here are the most exciting, vibrant and experimental artworks to represent Australian printmaking.

I’ve seen budget cuts dismantle what is possible for this important community as well as the jobs that go with it.

Have you worked together before?

What inspired you to collaborate?

JT: I first met Amelia while I was working at SALON De Refusés in 2017. We then worked together at Nomad Art Gallery so our love-art-relationship began straight away.

What are some of the items up for purchase?

AL: Yes, it will be lovely to have visitors at the studio! Join us for a cuppa and have a look at what we’ve been making. There will be lots of printed bits and pieces to sift through including ghost prints (prints from residual ink left on the plate), gift wrap, gift tags and cards.

A Hypothetical Darwin My creative in residence at the NT Archives started with the intention of looking at plans envisioned for Darwin that never happened. I then used these past decisions – or lack thereof – to inspire a series of designs of my own, A Hypothetical Darwin.

I wasn’t interested in presenting a grand plan. I wanted to reflect on what had come before me, so that I (hopefully) didn’t become another cog in the NT planning wheel. I wasn’t interested in proposing

a Darwin with hovercrafts and vertical cities – I wanted to focus on elevating what we already have, and love.

Intentions, like planning documents, are just that. There were one or two ideas that I just wish we had done, and quite a few I wish we hadn’t. Most importantly, what I’ve uncovered has shifted my focus and reminded me to continually check my lens.

planning history clearly reflect our colonial approach back at us. When you pull out layers of a Darwin map, the land and the plan, the collision is incredibly obvious. It’s a visual reminder that we need to find ways to acknowledge country, not only at the start of an event but throughout our entire process and systems.

So, I came up with 20 ideas of varying scales and complexity, and members of the community have given me feedback through a series of crits*.

Some have questioned my definition of ‘hypothetical’. People were surprised at the realistic nature of some ideas because, for example, giving back land in the Darwin municipality to Traditional Owners could happen. But in our current political climate – would it?

OR MORE THAN 10 YEARS , NT Music School has presented the Battle of the School Bands. This annual competition gives musicians from Northern Territory schools the chance to share the stage with some big names in music at the annual BASSINTHEGRASS Music Festival, set to be held later in the year.

There are a range of categories including Band, Soloist/Duo, Best Song, Encouragement Award, Best Bio Video and the People’s Choice Award. Past winners include the likes of Fat Pigeon, Stevie Jean and Juice, and competition this year is fierce, with record applications from regional areas including seven

The Soldier’s Tale DARWIN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA (DSO) dives into the fiery pits of Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale for the first DSO Kids’ Classic of 2020.

Originally planned for this month, this tale of a young soldier and his encounter with the Devil has been rescheduled for later in the year.

This dark folk tale follows Joseph as he embarks on a mission to recover his violin with the powers below.

DSO Education Officer Tara Murphy is excited for the young artists involved.

“We felt like we needed more opportunities for young people to get together and make music that maybe they’re not used to,” she says.

“We’ve toned down the story so it’s not quite as dark as the original, and really, the plot is basically Back to the Future 2!”

12 talented musicians from the DSO Young Artists Program will team up with a range of talented performers from the local Milkwood Steiner School. Tara says the combination

of musicians and performers brings something unique to the show.

“The kids come from different backgrounds and they’re like ‘I’m a gymnast’ or a ‘I’m a ballerina’, and we have to incorporate that talent and passion into the performance.”

Recent developments have meant the live performance format has been changed, but NT Music School’s Regional and Remote Programs Manager Rhiannon Cook, also a musician, says it’s still an important opportunity for students.

“Ensuring the competition goes ahead is important, as it still gives these students the chance to have a platform they wouldn’t otherwise have access to,” she says.

“We’ve had to adapt the competition this year due to unforseen circumstances, but, as the only competition of its kind in the NT, it will still be going ahead in a different format. Instead of live heats, we’re allowing entrants to film a video and send it in as their entry. But it’s not a polished music video as such – it should be done in one full clip, so it’s a more accurate representation of what a live gig might be like.

“Judges won’t be paying attention to things like video quality – we don’t want anyone disadvantaged by not having good video equipment.”

At the time of printing this magazine, the NT Music School hadn’t come to a conclusion on how the live final will roll out, which is normally a showcase of all finalists performing to a crowd at Darwin Railway Club. But there’s talk the finalists will get to film a higher quality video – with assistance from the pros in Alice Springs, Katherine, Nhulunbuy and Darwin – that will be uploaded to the school’s YouTube channel.

“We’re still not sure how the final will play out, but keep an eye on our website for further details. We know that this is an incredibly hard time for the events and arts industry, and we really feel for our techies, performers and event organisers.

We may not be able to support them in the same way as normal, but we can still get involved!”

Curtis Mayfield is such an important artist, historically, contextually from a socio-political standpoint, too. His art means so much. It’s inspired so many, especially in hip hop.

Whose posters did you have stuck to the wall as a teenager?

I had a Tupac Resurrection official

movie poster on my wall. I remember my mates from music class back in Year 11 bought it for me for my birthday. They knew how obsessed I was with Tupac.

I was listening to his music pretty much 24/7 at that point in my life.

That doco came out and I lost count of how many times I watched it. I still have it on DVD. But yeah, they copped the movie poster for me and it went straight up on my wall.

What song would you like played at your funeral?

‘Move On Up’ by Curtis Mayfield. It’s such a vibe. The bass line in that song is my favourite of all time. The energy. The lyrics. Everything about that song is a vibe.

Finish this sentence. The thing people would be surprised to know about me…

I always keep a few small bottles of Rare Earth Oil’s Narrow-Leaf Ironbark Eucalyptus Oil around, especially when I travel. If you catch the scent of eucalyptus oil when you’re on a flight, chances are I’m on that flight!

We were so excited to be invited to the Biennale event. When we visit other places in Australia, we learn so much about the stories and history of different Aboriginal communities, and share our culture and knowledge. We feel so proud to have been asked to be part of it.

We hope for new audiences to hear our music and our languages in the future.

IT'S NOT OFTEN YOU HEAR of an all-female rock band hailing from a remote Arnhem Land community, but Ripple Effect Band is just that.

MusicNT spoke to band member Rona Lawrence from her home in Maningrida to find out what’s next for Ripple Effect Band.

We wanted to make our family, friends and community proud. Especially the young girls and teenagers. We were showing them how we rock on the stage, with confidence.

SUPPORT ACT IS Australia’s only charity delivering crisis relief services to artists, crew and music workers as a result of ill health, injury, a mental health problem, or some other crisis that impacts on their ability to work in music.

Many individuals and businesses are suffering both financially and mentally as the toll of this uncertainty takes hold. Support Act and CrewCare are key national organisations who seek to support the industry on the ground level.

The current COVID-19 pandemic is directly affecting musicians and arts workers across the Territory, who have seen – and continue to see – significant loss of income and in many cases jobs.

At this time, they are both seeking donations and support from the broader community and government to be able to meet the needs of the sector in this crisis, but also working to increase awareness of their services and support within

the music community.

MusicNT supports this organisation, and encourages anyone with capacity to give to reach out and donate, and encourage any musician, venue or music industry worker to reach out, get in touch and get the support they need.

This is a long road, but there are organisations like Support Act and MusicNT who are working to support people through this. Let’s stick together.
