ix years ago gallery owners Matt Ward and Paul Johnstone joined forces to create Salon des Refusés – an exhibition to showcase the works rejected by the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award (NATSIAA).

“SALON will not only represent shows happening in Darwin this year – we are planning on taking SALON projects interstate and overseas.”

At the beginning of July the next leg will open with a permanent set up in Parap at the Vickers St Gallery, previously the Nomad Art space.

Ward and Johnstone each own Indigenous art galleries in Darwin – Outstation and Paul Johnstone Gallery respectively – which focus on the higher-end of the market.

What the pair discovered was a broad cross section of talented, emerging Indigenous artists who didn’t have many opportunities to exhibit their work.

SALON will also capitalise on the Indigenous art buzz in August with five solo-exhibitions in different venues around Darwin, and the Salon des Refusés at Charles Darwin University Art Gallery.

“It came to a point where there was so much happening, in so many different forms, that we said ‘why don’t we start a new company?’,” Johnstone explains.

SALON Indigenous Art Projects was born.

“We were looking for a way to conflate our ideas. The namesake SALON is the perfect way to identify the Indigenous art projects we are presenting together.

The first venture of SALON is already open in Darwin at the new Searcy St Gallery, in the old Viva La Body shopfront.

Currently, work from Ampilatwatja artists is on show, and new exhibitions will pop up over the next three months.

Get It On DESIGNERS HAVE BEEN WORKING THEIR MAGIC ON FABRIC FROM INJALAK ARTS Centre in preparation for the second annual Get It On competition – a celebration of the prints coming from Injalak artists and the designers who love to use them.

The arts centre in Gunbalanya sends fabric to designers from all over the world to create wearable art for an exhibition at Aboriginal Bush Traders this month.

An awards night will be held to crown the best designs – including awards for 'most fabulous’ and ‘most surprising’.

Injalak Arts Centre Manager Flick Wright thought up the idea of the showcase whilst pottering in her garden in January 2017.

“People come and visit us and look at our printing and go, what can I do with it?” she says.

“I thought, wouldn't it be great if we could bring together our fabrics with the people who are using them to see what people can make out of them.”

The inaugural year was an overwhelming success, and this year is no different. 30 designers have completed outfits and accessories for the showcase, which opens mid

The project isn’t just about celebrating Indigenous textiles and creative designers – it’s also about promoting slow fashion.

“The fashion industry is responsible for an extraordinary amount of waste,” Wright says.

“It consumes a huge amount of resources and fast fashion is creating a waste problem.

“With Aboriginal textiles, people have a sense of connection with the people who made them.

“We’re encouraging people to be more thoughtful – it’s not about the fashion, it’s about respect for the person who designed it and wearing something that has meaning.

“It’s about being more responsible and respectful of the planet.”

Camino de Santiago

STEPHEN DUNT CONSIDERS HIMSELF ONE OF THE LUCKIEST UNLUCKY BLOKES IN AUSTRALIA. He’s among the tiny percentage of men to be diagnosed with testicular cancer twice – but is lucky to have found the lumps and acted quickly.

“The first time I was diagnosed five years ago, I got it early so it was only a Type 1 cancer, so it hadn’t spread further,” he says.

“Obviously you feel a bit unlucky at the time, but when I reflect on it I was quite lucky that I was selfaware and checked myself regularly, because I’ve heard a lot of stories from young men who find something and are too afraid to see their doctors.”

Dunt’s second diagnosis in November 2017 came as a huge shock – only two to three per cent of men get testicular cancer twice.

Camino de Santiago

This time around Dunt wanted to make sure it wasn’t for nothing and approached the Cancer Council NT to see what he could do.

“When I was sitting in hospital I decided that rather than sit and feel sorry for myself, I wanted to raise money and awareness about testicular cancer,” he says.

At the time, the Cancer Council NT were organising a 112km trek through the Camino de Santiago to raise $100,000 for the organisation. Dunt signed up to complete the walk and raise funds and awareness along the way.

“Testicular cancer is the most common cancer among young men in Australia but the least spoken about,” he says.

“You can do a self-assessment in private in a matter of seconds. If

you do find an irregularity or pain or discomfort go and see a doctor early – it can make a huge difference. The longer you leave it the more chance it may spread.”

As part of the fundraising efforts a group of trekkers are hosting the Spain Place Fiesta, adjacent to Stone House.

Cancer Council fundraising manger Nadine Jones says it will be a fun evening full of live entertainment, salsa dancing, Spanish food and wine – all for a worthy cause.

“All the money raised goes back into the Cancer Council of the Northern Territory,” she says.

BARUNGA FESTIVAL A unique all-female band from Arnhem Land will be a highlight at this year’s historic Barunga Festival.

This year the festival marks 30 years since Bob Hawke called for a treaty between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians after being presented with the Barunga Statement.

Ripple Effect

The all-Indigenous music lineup features plenty of Territory favourites, including Lonely Boys and Saltwater Band, to complement the sport and cultural program over the long-weekend festival.

Among the performers is the unique Ripple Effect Band – one of the only all-female bands to come out of Arnhem Land.

Guitarist Joelene Lawrence says she’s nervous about performing at Barunga but is proud to be a role model for young female musicians in her community.

“I feel nervous because it’s my first time going out to Barunga,” she says.

“But we’re proud to play, and after that we go home and we’ll tell them and support the community.”

The Maningrida women first formed a band in high school in the mid2000s before life got in the way of their music making.

Band member Jodie Kell returned to the community last year and the band re-formed with a more mature sound.

“It’s been so great playing together again – the level of excitement for all of us is really high,” she says.

“Stephanie said to me once, ‘I feel like I’ve been the walking dead and now I’m playing music again I feel alive’ – that’s how good it feels.”

The eight women share the singing and songwriting duties and sing in four different languages - kune, burarra, ndjébbana and na-Kara.

Kell says the diversity of language is a strength of the group.

Malandarri “This year’s Malandarri Festival is exciting, as always,” she says.

“Everyone looks forward every year to the community coming together to showcase our culture and perform our traditional dance and song.

“There’s a growing buzz right now in Borroloola, especially for the young ones who are getting their costumes together and practising their dance.”

The festivities kick off with a special appearance by the all-female NT Indigenous music showcase Divas on Tour, featuring Donna Velia, Kirra Voller, Lynetter Hubbard and Shana Ray from Music NT’s Divas program.

Dance groups from across the NT will head to the remote community to kick up a storm and join in with all the usual fun, including a school parade, marketplace, workshops, art, traditional food and kids activities.

Mandorah Ukulele and Folk Festival

THE COSTUMES ARE COMING TOGETHER AND DANCERS are preparing for the annual Malandarri Festival in Borroloola.

Festival director Marlene Timothy says there is a buzz in the community as everyone prepares for the big weekend.

“One of the songs is about this language switching – it’s a real celebration of how great it is to be part of a culture that speaks all these languages.”

A unique community based event, the festival celebrates the traditional and contemporary art and culture of the four clan groups in Borroloola – the Yanyuwa, Garrwa, Gurdanji and Mara people.

“Maningrida is one of the most multi-lingual places in the world and everyone speaks several languages,” she says.

WHAT DO NEIL ARMSTONG, MARILYN MONROE AND WARREN BUFFETT and Darwin local Kirstene Ost all have in common? A love for the ukulele.

After Armstrong landed back on Earth from his trip to the Moon he was quarantined with the rest of the Apollo 11 crew for 21 days and passed the time playing the uke. Monroe was the strumming songstress in Some Like It Hot, and billionaire Buffett was rumoured to have picked up the instrument to impress a gal in his youth – and stuck with it long after she rejected him.

Ost only picked up the uke three years ago, joking it was a midlife crisis which drove her off the musical deep-end.

“I needed a dose of joy in my life and I’d talked about the uke to my partner,” she says.

“He bought one for my birthday and since then I haven’t put it down.”

Ost isn’t the only uke fan in the Top End. The annual Mandorah Ukulele and Folk Festival (MUFF) increases in popularity each year.

“It’s a really casual festival,” Ost says.

“There’re kids running around everywhere and a stage set under a glorious banyan tree.

“It’s the type of festival where there’s someone on stage and half the crowd is strumming along, or they play a certain song and suddenly there’s 200 people up dancing.”

Headlining the event is the "world's most dangerous uke show", Ukulele Death Squad, plus Benhur and the Tiny Love Orchestra, Mirrabooka, Azo Bel and AJ Leonard.

On stage over the two-day festival you can see local favourites, including Ben Evolent, Jigsaw Collective, Stevie Jean, Serina Pech, Dave Garnham, Ali Mills and Tracey Bunn.

The 2018 festival features fun for the whole family with the Burning Circus entertaining the kids and Firestone Tours teaching spear throwing.

If you’ve been looking for an excuse to pick up a new hobby, MUFF is the best time to learn a couple of chords on the uke.

“I think what I really love is that it’s so easy to learn a few chords.

Once you know a few chords you can play so many songs and it gives you such a good excuse to sing,” Ost says.

Chief beanie-ologist Jo Nixon says there’re no ways to adequately explain the visual fiesta of the beanie bonanza.

“It’s an explosion of colour, warmth, texture and joy,” she says.

Nixon says there’re all sorts of incredible creations flowing through the post office this year.

“Each year when I open the parcels I’m surprised, yet again, at what standard we can go to,” she says.

“The festival is a success because

the beanie is not only an object of art – it’s wearable art and anyone can wear it.

The festival is about celebrating wearable art that’s accessible to everyone and anyone.

The festival began as a simple ‘beanie party’ in 1997 to sell beanies crocheted by Indigenous women from the surrounding communities.

Two decades later, elaborate entries come from all over the globe.

“When it first started it was all about sewing beanies for the Indigenous women and teaching them how to make beanies, getting involved with the wider Alice Springs community, and I think we’ve kept the vision,” Nixon says.

“Now the wider community extends to the other side of the world with

“So many arts competitions are exclusive and people feel they’re not good enough and a bit shy.

Prize Fighter tells the story of Isa, an orphan forced to be a child soldier in war-torn Congo, before fleeing to Australia as a refugee. He takes up boxing in his new home, battling his past demons in the ring.

While Fidel was never a child solider, there are many elements that reflect his own journey as a Congolese refugee and the experiences of those he has known.

The play is an extremely physical blend of live boxing and storytelling, and will be in the Top End as part of Darwin Festival.

Mzembe says the play not only tells a compelling story, but also offers more insight into the issues behind the conflict in Congo.

Mzembe says boxing was made easier by a rare opportunity to perform on stage with his brother, Gideon.

“People learn more about the Congo, which is responsible for 80 per cent of the world’s resources, and is the backbone of technical resources, but most people only know it for the war.

Isa is played by Pacharo Mzembe, who came to Australia from Malawi as a political refugee with his family when he was a young boy.

“Isa is an ex child soldier, he loses his family and his innocence is taken away,” Mzembe says.

“During that time he does an act as a child which haunts him.

“He escapes from the rebel soldiers

“I’ve been boxing since I was young and the punches are real,” he says.

“A lot of people think it’s fully choreographed – some of it has been to make sure we’re safe – but having my brother there, I can read him well, and we can talk without talking on stage.”

The play premiered at Brisbane Festival in 2015 and was nominated in the 2016 Helpmann Award for Best New Australian Work and Best Play.

“But it’s a simple human story told in a very dynamic way. That’s what I love about it – it’s not preachy. It’s a story told in a way most people would never have experienced before.”

It all began in Paris 30 years ago, but arrived in Darwin last year to an eager audience. Organiser Anisha Stitfold tells us what’s so special about the occasion.

Last year was an overwhelming success – what do people love about it so much?

The secret and surprise element struck a chord with people – it’s like a magical mystery tour for adults.

It’s also an utterly unique event and the more effort you put in, the more

Enter the good folk at ACCOMPLICE, who managed to convince me (they didn’t have to put a gun to my head) to come to Darwin, and teach a few of the locals the art of smoky, real BBQ. Lupin will have a dish for everyone to try at each stop, which uses the produce being looked at.

‘When we get to each spot I’ll have a basket full of bits and pieces made from local plants,” she says.

I witnessed first hand the dedication of the locals, the home cooks, who’ve had to be pretty resourceful with how they cook. They don’t have access to all the gadgets and rubs, and even cuts of meat, so they make their own, in true pioneer spirit.

He was in residency sharing his culinary skills at ACCOMPLICE.

Guide Emma Lupin says it’s all about connecting people with the produce and farmers in the Top End.

Lupin, from Taste of the Top End, will lead the Rapid Creek Markets tour, which visits both Rapid Creek and Nightcliff Markets and three community gardens in the northern suburbs.

The one thing that stands out is the passion in the folks behind the smokers. I’ve witnessed the same level of pride, love and dedication all over this country – people bitten by the BBQ bug – and I definitely see it in Darwin’s skilled pitmasters.

The Pedal to Produce tours are subsidised by City of Darwin’s Bike Plan to make them more affordable for locals and tourists.

There are several bike tours on offer, including one through the city to Parap Markets, as well as other sightseeing tours around Darwin.

You can bring your own bike or hire one from City of Darwin for the tours, which range from three to five hours and can cover up to 20kms.

ISABELL LUCK WAS CROWNED THE TOP YOUNG COOK AT NT YOUTH WEEK’S DISHING UP DARWIN COMPETITION LAST MONTH. She battled it out in four rounds over the weekend and won with her barramundi and udon noodle dish. Here’s what she had to say about her experience.

“Dishing up Darwin was such a great experience! I learnt so many things

Barramundi with udon noodles, ginger & lime glaze & coconut net 1/2 cup ginger & lime marmalade 1/4 cup lime juice 2 tbsp brown sugar 1 tbsp soy sauce 2 kaffir lime leaves, finely chopped 1 lemongrass stem, finely chopped 1/2 tsp dried chilli flakes 1/2 packet udon noodles, cooked 400g fresh barramundi 1/2 tin coconut cream 1 egg 1/2 cup plain flour 1/8 tsp baking powder Coconut oil 1 sprig fresh coriander, chopped

Combine the marmalade, lime juice, brown sugar, soy sauce, kaffir leaves, lemongrass and chilli flakes in a small saucepan on medium heat. Stir to melt and thicken, then remove from heat.

Season barramundi with salt and pepper and cook in a heated pan with coconut oil.

In a medium bowl, whisk the coconut cream and egg, then add the baking powder and flour.

Place the coconut mixture in a

piping bag and cut a very small hole. In a small pan on medium heat, add 1cm of coconut oil, then squeeze the mixture in a zigzag motion to make a small net. Cook until golden and flip when crispy.

Jack Dowden, 26, moved to Darwin in July 2017 for uni and threw himself in the Top End skate scene.

The skater is now working with local organisations to strengthen the sport in the Territory and create opportunities to get fresh faces down at the park.

“Skating also encourages young people to get outside and helps develop confidence, self expression and self esteem – and patience, definitely patience,” he laughs.

“Some local orgs have jumped on board to really develop and grow the skating scene in Darwin and the NT,” he says.

In his travels, Dowden has seen effective programs in other cities, which he hopes to start in Darwin.

“In Phoenix my friends started a program called Skate After School where they provide help for young skaters,” he says.

“Seeing how beneficial these programs are is a big motivator for me and it’s inspired me to want to do something similar in Darwin.”

Darwin skaters can get down to Jingili Skate Park for the usual Wednesday night skate jam and a pizza party celebration on June 20. There’s more action on June 21 at The Shak, which will be transformed into a pop-up skate park for Go Skate Day. “It’s a great opportunity for people to come down and try skating,” Dowden says.

“Don’t be shy – everyone is very friendly.”

and met some great people. All of the mentors were such a big help and encouraging to each of the competitors. On Sunday morning of the competition the four finalists met at the markets to learn about some of the fresh produce that can be found in Darwin or even grown.

REVIEWS, TIPS AND ADVICE FOR TRAVELLING THE WORLD WITH KIDS ONE OF THE THINGS I REALLY LOVE about having my kids grow up in the Top End are the special opportunities to learn and experience the rich and diverse Aboriginal culture that is part of the fabric of life up here. Whether it's heading to an Aboriginal community festival, soaking up the hip and happening music scene, experiencing Kakadu, Litchfield or Humpty Doo with an Aboriginal custodian, or simply heading off to story time with Aunty Sharona in the Darwin CBD – there are some truly wonderful things to do with kids.

Perhaps jumping aboard an organised tour in your own

backyard isn't something you think is for you. Like heaps of Darwin families, we've been to places like Litchfield many times. But, for a different and enlightening view of this much loved park, you should look into spending a day with Tess from Northern Territory Indigenous Tours. She'll take you to special places that are off limits to the general public and share her stories, insights and culture.

My guess is you've been to Kakadu, probably numerous times. But have you tried the Guluyambi Cultural Cruise, or hung out with Victor Cooper from Ayal Tours? And have you heard of Kakadu Cultural Camp?

If you haven't cruised along the East Alligator River on a Guluyambi Cultural Cruise, this is a must do for your next Kakadu sojourn. Seriously, my boys still wax lyrical about Hilton (our guide) and his masterful spear throwing techniques. I have to admit, he is pretty cool.

But you don't have to head far out of town to jump on a tour. Just down the track from Darwin, past

Humpty Doo, you'll find Pudukal Tours. With Lynette, Graham and their lovely family, your kids will see and experience basket weaving, the yidaki, spear throwing and learn about bush food and medicine.

And then there are the community festivals – one of the best ways to get amongst it all. If you make the effort to head to a festival, it will be an experience your kids will never forget. On our list for this year is the Mahbilil Festival in Jabiru, which we've never been to. Everyone says it's a super family-friendly event crammed with some really cool activities for kids, local music and dance performances. There's a big emphasis on bushfood – so this might be your opportunity to sample buffalo, barra and Magpie Goose, which are cooked up in large earth ovens. I'm in.

If getting out of town seems too hard because you have little kids in tow, keep your eye on the Facebook page of Starwin Shopfront in Darwin for their special Indigenous story time sessions with Sharona.

Currently living in the big smoke of Melbourne, the Territory grown “Stockman” still has his heart in the NT. He dreams about being back home more regularly and maybe one day opening his very own signature restaurant – a very exciting prospect for foodies in the Territory.

June is such an exciting time of the year here in the Territory, as the best of local produce is finally available – and it’s abundant. This means that prices of locally grown, certified organic produce are lower.

Now is a great time to stock up at home. It’s also a great time to be out and about enjoying locallyinspired dishes made by some of our highly talented and creative Top End chefs.

‘cool’ weather is the chance to turn on the oven without melting in the kitchen. Roasting up veggies galore and creating soups becomes a lot more enjoyable again.

THIS MONTH, I AM LUCKY TO BE JOINED BY AARON SIGNAL AKA MON CHERIE to talk about the recent rejuvenation of the monthly Fab U Lash series of drag-inspired comedy and live singing variety performances at the Cavanagh Hotel.

Firstly, congratulations on your recent performance in April Fab U Lash. You were cheeky, funny and a little bit biting – and your stand-up wasn’t bad either.

As they say – witty not pretty.

A dangerous combination...

You’ll be hosting Dames and Giggles – Australian Comedy Queens Fab U Lash event this month. What can fans expect?

Pretty much a gaggle of girlies.

We all know each other, but live in different states, so the opportunity to get some hysterical folk in one room screams for an audience.

You will be sharing hosting duties with the infamous Sherri Lee Volua.

Will Ms Volua behave and is she a considerate ‘co-host’?

She is the Bert to my Ernie. We are the two grumpy Muppets in the balcony. We host each other, so one of us has time to fan her sweat and breathe.

How did Fab U Lash first get started and how did you get involved?

Sherri and I had a crazy idea back in 2013 Out Games Darwin and started it with Tina and Shimmer LaQueen.

What are your dreams for Fab U Lash?

That Fab U Lash will grow organically – at the moment I like having Darwin comedians join us. In a year it might evolve again. It will always have live, singing Queens though, blended with comedy and old school drag. It's a niche no one else is exploring, so we will.

Which comic drag artists do you admire most?

Bianca del Rio. Maggie Scott. I love cutting but clever wit. Something that's fast in delivery but sits for a second to sink in.

In both of these ways, you support local businesses. The biggest bonus is that by purchasing fresh from the farmers, you get the best quality produce grown, transported with less impact on the environment.

Masterchefs like Tapp get excited about sniffing the goods at farmers’ markets. A passion shared by many, it’s certainly becoming one of mine and I get excited in the Dry about the opportunity to cook with ingredients that I’m discovering for the first time. A bonus of our

Divaz AN AWARD-WINNING DOCUMENTARY TAKES YOU BEHIND the make-up, under the wigs and beneath the sparkles of the glitz and glamour of Australia’s inaugural Miss First Nations Drag Queen Pageant.

Black Divaz follows Indigenous drag queens competing in the groundbreaking national competition, co-founded by Darwin local Ben Graetz, aka Miss Ellaneous.

“For us it was about seeing the girls up there on the screen,” Graetz says.

“A lot of the contestants were from regional or remote towns. Jojo was one of the only black drag queens in her town – same as Nova.

“It’s created this awareness in those town and started conversations within those communities.

“(The pageant) is about creating visibility and awareness for the LGBTQI Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community,” he says.

“Now the girls are role models, all the younger LGBTQI members of the community know who they are and know they’re supported.”

“It’s basically creating an avenue to showcase the extraordinary talents out there.”

The documentary explores the personal stories and the complexities faced by the contestants as Indigenous drag queens.

The pageant was a glittery hit and the film struck a chord in the community and received two standing ovations at its premiere at the 2018 Mardi Gras and won the people’s choice vote for best documentary.

Unlike other drag shows, there was no room for drama – something Graetz knew wouldn’t be an issue anyway.

Beautiful almost feels too glib a word for prose of this quality – but McKnight’s debut novel Rain Birds is beautiful. It is also heart wrenching.

Set among the bush in Boney Point, East Gippsland, Victoria, Rain Birds tells the parallel stories of Arianna, a dedicated biologist leading a Black Cockatoo release program, and Pina, a Boney Point local of 30 years. It is a raw and moving portrayal of two women and their struggle to maintain control over their changing lives.

OFF THE SHELF Welcome to my column where each month I’ll take a book from the shelf to share.

Particularly convincing is McKnight’s depiction of Pina, rendered carer and stranger to her husband who has early onset Alzheimer’s. You keenly feel Pina’s frustration and grief throughout. Similarly Arianna’s struggle with impulse control disorder is written in such a way that is it both empathetic and deeply informative.

Released late last year, Rain Birds is a novel that has been on my radar for a while now. When it recently rose to the top of my stack of books waiting to be read, I surprised myself by devouring it in one sitting.

I have since learnt Harriet McKnight lives in Darwin and to know we have a writer of such calibre in our midst is a lovely realisation.

Through the personal stories of these women and the cast of characters in Boney Point, McKnight points to broader questions of Indigenous sovereignty, climate change and the extinction of species. But she does not press these themes. Rather, small details allow her to reveal a vivid place that you come to care deeply about.

“The competition is all about sisterhood and supporting each other – there’s a lack of visibility and support in general for the community, so to bitch and to go against each other is really not in the nature of who we are as a community and who we are as a people,” he says.

The Top End and NT premiere at the Deckchair Cinema will be extra special, with performances and Q&As with the girls featured in the film in their hometown.

“The showcase in Darwin will be incredible – we’ll have Shaniqua, Crystal Love and Isla performing and there’s a real hometown pride,” Graetz says.

“It’s going to be a really special night.”

Rain Birds is propelled by a building sense of trepidation and suspense.

Yet when this climax is realised, McKnight refuses neat or romantic resolutions. Rather, one is left with a strong sense of women’s strength and resilience in the face of the sometimes-heartbreaking realities of life: "Once she would have said all the usual things: it will be ok and don’t worry too much. But she knew now that the people you loved weren’t always ok, that things didn’t always get better."

PERFORMING ARTS DURING WWI TOP END SOLDIERS WERE FORCED TO TRAVEL INTERSTATE TO ENLIST – but they didn’t leave town without a party to say farewell.

In those days the parties were called smoke socials, and theatregoers will experience what the events were like first-hand in the latest work by playwright Sandra Thibodeaux.

A Smoke Social will be performed in the same venue as the original soirees – the Town Hall Ruins.

“As you enter the ruins, you’re in the play,” Thibodeaux says.

“During these events they would obviously smoke and drink and would have songs, poetry readings, comedy acts – we’ve added a couple of magic tricks and skits.

“It was all about having a party to

say goodbye to the guys going off to war.”

Thibodeaux secured ANZAC federal funding for the play and then faced the challenge of finding a new angle to explore.

“The narrative was a tricky one because WWI is a hard one to cover,” she says.

“You can’t put a good spin on it – it was a stupid war and resulted in the useless death of millions of people.

“How could I do something interesting that would be worthwhile, that hasn’t been done before?”

Thibodeaux wanted to capture the essence of the era – the advent of AFL, the rise of workers’ and women’s rights, Darwin’s brass bands and the role of

Indigenous soldiers.

She researched many of the real-life experiences of Territory and Australian soldiers to piece together a new narrative.

“I’ve got two brothers from Darwin – one Indigenous, one nonIndigenous – and they both wind up in Palestine. They’ve been split up from their company and holed up in this bunker,” Thibodeaux says.

“They meet a beautiful mysterious woman – there’s a bit of a love story in there and we keep flicking between Darwin and Palestine and eventually the two worlds merge and blend and you don’t know where you are anymore.”

The Pen and the Sword ARTISTS PLAYED A PIVOTAL ROLE IN WWI by showing the true horror of the front lines to the world.

Owen, who features heavily in Rive’s play, was killed in action one week before the war ended.

The words of poets who fought in The Great War will come to life on stage in a revised production of local director Tony Rive’s The Pen and the Sword: Words in War.

“One poet spoke of the glory of war and then died from a mosquito bite. Another had an obituary written about him and then died 70 years later,” Rive says.

Rive sourced poems from some of the most well known poets of the time, and others who fought in different countries or in different circumstances.

Rive says many of the poets explored the different sentiments of such a senseless conflict, and felt it was necessary to show the world the conditions faced by soldiers.

They are presented in chronological order to illustrate the change in the social conscience about the war over time.

Quixote

The Duprada Dance Company is bringing Top End and Centralian dancers together for a one-off performance of Don Quixote in Darwin.

It’s the first time since 2014 that the dancers have had the opportunity to join forces. Assistant Director Leisa Jackson spoke with Off The Leash about the show and the challenges of putting on a performance with so much distance between artists.

How do the two groups rehearse for a joint show, 1500km apart?

For this performance all the main characters are in Alice Springs, so

our girls in Darwin are doing the peripheral quarter ballet work, so they’re learning to react to something they can’t see yet. The touring company arrive one week prior to the performance and we then rehearse together in the studio, knitting together the story, learning each other’s staging and placements.

Sounds like a challenge!

It is challenging but we’ve been able to work out ways we can make it happen pretty quickly, and the dancers learn how quickly they can pull something together. For a couple of days it looks like a complete and utter mess, but they work together very quickly and figure out where everyone is going.

Why Don Quixote?

The biggest pull is because it hasn’t been staged in Darwin before. It’s a complicated story and it’s nice for our girls to do new ballets.

What sets Duprada apart from other companies in the country?

Our ballet company works because we constantly have up and coming dancers, and they have the freedom to be able to perform. Most schools around the country don’t have the freedom to perform as regularly as us. Alice Springs does four or five performances a year.

“WWI was a lot different to WWII because the bad guys were very clear in WWII,” he says.

“The poems start off ‘hooray for war’, then turn to ‘this isn’t so good’ and then ‘this is terrible’ and then the post war looking back,” he says.

“A lot of the poetry wasn’t ‘those are the bad guys, let’s get them’.

There was a lot more empathy for the opposition.

“It’s showing a bit of pro war and anti war. I don’t want to make a judgement. I want the audience to make a judgement about it.

“Wilfred was sent home because of shell shock, but then took a second tour to tell people what was really happening – these people sacrificed themselves to let others know what they were going through.”

“I think that’s the power of art – it’s not powerful enough to stop a war – but it can get people talking.”

SYDNEY DANCE COMPANY’S LATEST PRODUCTION explores the depth of human impulse in ab [intra].

“We used this same method to create solos, duets, trios and all sort of different groupings,” Bonachela says.

In the initial development, ab [intra], which means ‘from within’ in Latin, began with a series of improvised movements by the dancers.

“The language, the mood and the feel of the movement that became the choreography originated from a very personal and unique place.”

Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela then asked each dancer to write down their thoughts, feelings and ideas about their movements during this research and development phase.

“I proposed to start with a series of improvisations, experimenting is always an important part of the process,” he says on the Sydney Dance Company blog.

“I asked the dancers to be in the moment with each other, to feel and listen to each other, to use their instinct, their impulses and visceral responses.

“And let me tell you it was pretty crazy at times, but very interesting!”

The terms the dancers wrote down – which included ‘soft existence’ and ‘purposely creating awkward encounters’ – became the driving force behind the choreography of the show.

Bonachela worked with long-term collaborator, composer Nick Wales to develop a new score, which brought together two musical styles.

“Music is a very important component of any piece I create, for ab [intra] I wanted to bring two of the musical styles that I love together in the same work: contemporary classical with powerful strings, and intricate electronic composition,” says Bonachela.

The Kazoos Teddy Bear’s Picnic Aboriginal Bush Traders is 100% not-for profit and provides support to Indigenous people wanting to engage in economic activities in a sustainable way.

KIDS IN KATHERINE WILL BE SWEPT AWAY ON A MAGICAL FLOATING ISLAND with a toothless crocodile, a happy shark and a lovable teddy bear in the musical comedy A Teddy Bear’s Picnic.

The show is the latest musical theatre production from husband and wife team Chris and Celia Hill from Kazoos.

Professor Silly and Tulip need to find Big Bear Brown in time for the Teddy Bear’s Picnic – because what’s a picnic without your favourite teddy bear?

Celia Hill, who plays Tulip, says the show was aimed at preschool and early primary aged children and features a host of original songs, dance, adventure and plenty of humour.

She says the Kazoos secret to success with family audiences is that they are quite literally a family act themselves, with Chris’ mother Betty Bobbitt directing the show and testing the material on their own kids.

“We started out in a garage as a songwriting duo with our own kids as our first audience and sternest critics and it’s just grown almost organically since then,” Celia says.

Not only is the show a heap of fun, it’s educational as well. It was developed under the guidance of early childhood expert Margie Cohan to make sure the little tackers get as much out of it as possible.

Who WE ARE with creative director

Amina MConvell ARTISTS FROM DARWIN’S FREE SPACE STUDIO (FSS) ARE TAKING OVER the Live Darwin Hub and exploring identity in their latest exhibition Who We Are. Darwin’s FSS was set up in 2013 to foster the talents of young artists with disabilities in the Top End. Off The Leash caught up with creative producer Amina McConvell to talk about this month’s show.

What is the latest exhibition all about?

Who We Are examines ideas around identity; the exhibition theme is broad to allow artists room to move in terms of approaching the theme from their own areas of interest.

Depth Perception THOM BUCHANAN IS INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED FOR HIS URBAN-MEETSENVIRONMENTAL STREETSCAPES, but the Adelaide artist will showcase a new body of work at Paul Johnstone Gallery in June.

“The body of work I’ve created for this exhibition is looking at depth perception – which is the title of the show – and at the illusion of space,” he says.

“Most of my work conveys perspective in a 2D surface – a lot of this work is looking at hieroglyphs and surface tension; it's a bit of a segue from my older work.

“I’m looking at the physiological space, the in-between territory of stuff that humans travel through.”

Buchanan says he’s enjoying the process of diversifying his style and using his skill set in a different way.

“We always want to evolve and challenge ourselves,” he says.

“I’m technically trained to paint anything, which is pretty cool, so it’s just embracing all those techniques and skill sets to come up with nuances.

“If you don’t do that you just tread the same water over and over again.”

There is one element that runs through most of Buchanan’s work – the colour yellow. It’s an ode to his mother, who died from breast cancer 18 years ago.

“I always put a reference to my Mum in my work,” he says.

How have the artists responded to the theme?

The artworks in the exhibition show diverse responses – some works relate to poetic notions of the self, other works are political, and others are humorous or reference popculture.

Tell us about whom you are – who are the artists at the FSS? FSS is home to a collective of 17 visual artists who come together three times a week for studio workshops and to develop various studio-based projects. It’s an inclusive project focused on developing studio skills for artists with disabilities.

What’s on the cards for artists in 2018?

Darwin Community Arts has moved location – what does the move mean for FSS? Yes, we have moved to Coconut Grove – it's very fresh and we have been in our new studio for just under a month now. Darwin Community Arts now has two locations, with more on the way, in the not too distant future.

FSS is now at Unit 3 in the Clock Tower complex on Dickward Drive – we officially have our dream studio set up, and in the coming months we will be opening a small gallery space at the studio.

“I like the idea of the colour being quite positive – we’re living in strange times and I guess the luxury for me as an artist is, hopefully, I can plant seeds of hope into the future generations of makers or creatives or humanity.”

Buchanan has become known for his ability to create work in front of a crowd and will demonstrate this skill with live drawing at the opening.

Coming Home TJARLIRLI ART CENTRE REPRESENTS THE ARTISTS OF TJUKURLA in the Ngannyatjarra lands of Western Australia, as well as Kaltukatjara Art centre in Docker River, Northern Territory.

The artwork has strong links with the Papunya Tula movement, as families left Kintore and Kiwirrkurra to return to their homelands in the mid 1980s. Established in 2006, Tjarlirli Art has been recognised as a source of culturally significant work produced by elders such as Nyarapayi Giles and Katjarra Butler. They are joined with Bob Gibson and Tjukupati James in this exhibition.

ROGUE TRADERS ne of the most successful electro pop-rock bands in recent Australian music history, Rogue Traders, are reprising their hits for one night only at Skycity. Founding member James Ash spoke to Off The Leash.

After a few years of massive global success, things have been quiet from the Rogue Traders in recent years. What drew you all back together in 2015?

Well it was simply time, I think.

It was something that people had talked about for a while, but the timing was never right. After reminiscing about how much fun it was we just thought, why not play again – let’s see if people still want

to see us and hear those songs. It was a real spinout going back to our original rehearsal room and pulling up those songs again after so many years. We couldn’t help looking at each other and grinning as we started to play them. Our first gig back actually felt very similar to our first ever gig, at least to me.

Did you all click back together easily... or did it take a while to find your groove?

We all just started hanging out a bit together again and it was very natural. There wasn’t any pressure at all. None of us had left on bad terms so it was simply a case of finding our energy again – and that didn’t take long at all. I think we had all really missed playing

together; the whole process has been smooth. We all have kids now, too – so it’s often a big family affair when we do gigs, which is actually pretty awesome. Our kids get to see us play, something I didn’t think would happen.

Have you been inspired to create new tunes over the last few years back together – or are you just loving playing the hits that were so successful for you first time round?

It’s both. We love playing our records out to people. The reaction is the same, the energy is the same – it’s amazing how time just crystallises when you’re onstage and all the years fall away. Having said that though, we are most definitely working on new material

– but everyone agrees that we need to come up with something pretty special if we are going to release it. Anything new a band comes up with will be measured against its biggest achievements. Yes, that’s a good problem to have – but it still makes us wary.

Have you played in Darwin before?

Played and visited Darwin many times. As Rogues we’ve played quite a few times, and I must have DJ’ed up here half a dozen times.

Also, one of my closest mates lives there, so I’m always up for a visit!

What can you remember about your last Darwin show?

It was a lot of fun.

What's the band been up to since that last Darwin visit?

We have been to Europe, played around Australia and released a new album.

The new album is Loudmouth Soup, have you got a favourite track off the album?

Probably ‘Too Dumb to Die’ and ‘The Last Stand.’

Has there been a crowd favourite off this album? I'm guessing ‘100 Cans of Beer’ and ‘Too Dumb To Die’ might be popular?

We haven’t played either of them but ‘Feeling Average’ and ‘Better in the Shed’ go all right.

The music you guys make still hits a sweet spot for Aussie punk/garage rock lovers –but it's not something that many other Aussie groups are doing these days. Are there any outfits that you are excited to see or listen to that are doing something similar to the Cosmic Psychos?

The Chats are good. I like Total Control and I also like the Southern River Band from WA – the singer is a crack-up.

IT’S A HOEDOWN AT THE SHOWGROUNDS! Darwin musician, promoter and serial festival organiser Andrew Arthur spoke to Off The Leash about Darwin’s first Country Music Muster.

A country music muster – how has this come about?

The Territory is the soul of Australian country. Country music is deeply connected to the land and has always been very popular in the remote NT. All the big names have toured here and all have written hit songs inspired by their unique experiences – From Slim Dusty's ‘Plains of Peppimenarti’ to John Williamson's ‘Raining on the Rock’.

Why is the time ripe to celebrate country music with a dedicated festival?

Darwin has a long history of appreciation of country music.

Back in the 70s there were multiple associations dedicated to the

Muster genre. One did try a festival at Robbie Robbins Reserve, and there were three years of shows with big names at the Amphitheatre.

Katherine also had a communitybased association that produced many quality shows but, unfortunately, over time, none of these opportunities have lasted.

Our team organised the Adelaide River Music Muster for many years and we made the decision to move the festival to a greater population base. The Darwin music scene is building its capacity and we have world class acts that need a performance platform.

What kind of day can punters expect?

Phil O'Brien is MC, so we are gonna have some fun, laughs, great music and much dancing. There will also be tears – after all, it's country music.

Tell us a bit about the line up, and the diversity of country music that will be on display.

The program is intense, with 12 acts over eight hours. We are so pleased to headline with Australian country music legend and Northern Territory icon Warren H Williams and his fabulous band. Up and coming young gun, Cameron Cusack is currently on tour around Australia, while QLD sensation 8 Ball Aitken is fresh from his US shows. Wanita, queen of honky tonk, is a wonderfully eccentric live wire with a silky voice, and Katie Oliver sings with beauty and depth of the Katherine River and her hometown.

Kicking off the day will be Cashed Up, Darwin's sell-out Johnny Cash Tribute Show.

You debuted with your band at the Darwin Festival almost eight years ago now, to rave reviews – has much changed with the band in that time?

Do you still have the same steaming hot horn section?

Most of the original Get Down horn section is playing, with the addition of Antonio Azure on keyboard and trumpet. It's Antonio's birthday on June 2, what a great way to celebrate – playing with the funkiest outfit in the NT! We’ll also have Matt Goldberg playing some trombone, as well as his trusty tenor sax, and band manager Levi Goldstein will be on the big baritone sax – watch out for the 'brown note’! Will the horn section be steaming hot?

Hot as a nasty November day when it ain't rained since May. There will be prizes for the sweetest moves and funkiest look. What kinds of moves are you hoping to see on the dance floor?

Da fine funky folk of Darwin move like no-one else on earth... and Barry's been around. We lookin’ for classic 'Soul Train' moves but also dat wild unpredictable stuff dat Darwin cats do. Don't forget da booty! You gotta shake it!

And the threads? What are you looking for?

Anything funky. Pure polyester is always a winner. “It makes you sweat!" to quote Barry's Darwin-penned single. Flares, platforms, tight-tight denim, psychedelic colours, paisley. If you don't have any, hit the op shops for anything 60s, 70s or 90s (when fluoro colours were big). Or surprise us with your version of funky!

Anything else Darwin funksters and groovers need to be prepared for?

Barry always asks, "are you experienced? Have you ever been experienced?" Well if you haven't experienced the 100 per cent pure uncut fun of Barry Brown and the Get Down, it's time you became experienced.

If you’ve already had the immense pleasure, get ready – the good old groovy stuff from the Groove Guru is still there – but there's more! Prepare to be surprised. There's more to Barry than you may have imagined.

Wood spoke to Off The Leash about why this will be another unforgettable show.

It's always one of the most exciting Dry season outdoor music events – and this year you are again celebrating one of the greats, David Bowie. Why is this the year for Bowie?

I have tried to keep our tradition of celebrating the iconic British bands and musicians – after the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Queen – Bowie was a natural decision. This also marks a tribute to this great

artist given his untimely death two years ago.

Tell us about what you've got planned for celebrating this legendary, one-of-a-kind musician.

Bowie was an artist of many voices and great innovation. His continual exploration of artistic expression lends itself to this style of concert and I am sure he would have been thrilled in the knowledge of his diverse oeuvre being celebrated with full symphony orchestra and band.

Are you a Bowie fan? Or will you have to spend some time delving into his music to help create this show?

I am a Bowie fan, but will of course have to spend time getting into all the music he left us – which is tremendous – and spend some time on the orchestral scores, looking specifically at the musical marriage of orchestra and band.

Have you got any special guests

helping to bring the music – and fashion, and style – of David Bowie to life?

We do…but, of course, are giving nothing away at this stage…

This is a special guest appearance by yourself as well. You wrapped up officially with the DSO last year and have been in Europe since then. What have you been doing since you left?

I am just on my way from London to Stockholm to conduct an opera (Satyagraha) by the American composer Philip Glass. We then tour this production to Copenhagen and New York. Coincidently, Glass collaborated with Bowie on a few projects. Glass’ 12th Symphony will in-fact be based on material of Bowie’s and will be premiered early next year in Los Angeles.
