“ The professors here are so interested in their respective fields that it invokes a fire in me to reach their level.” SIRISAAC FOSTER

Sophomore, Biochemistry Frankston, Texas

Discover YOURSELF at UT TYLER

What impressed SirIsaac Foster the most about UT Tyler is its strong healthcare programs that would prepare him to pursue a career in medicine. UT Tyler students receive an exceptional education, thanks to our renowned faculty, state-of-the-art facilities and small class sizes. When choosing a major, SirIsaac decided to study biochemistry in order to strengthen his medical background. “I discovered a love for the human body and chose medicine as my life’s work,” he says. “I must understand the systems behind human beings before I take on the responsibility of repairing them through surgery.” As a member of the LOGOS Honors College Student Senate and an undergraduate researcher in the chemistry and biochemistry department, SirIsaac credits UT Tyler’s commitment to teaching excellence as the reason for his success. “I’ve not only gained useful experiences in a highly academic environment but will also stand out on my applications to medical school,” he says.

Sam Schott*

NCAA Woman of the Year 2025 Medical Student, Class of 2029

“It’s a gift to attend school and pursue a degree. Not everyone gets to do what you’re doing. So, you have to treat every day like a blessing.” SUCCESS ON AND OFF THE FIELD Our student-athletes succeed on and off the field, including UT Tyler softball alum Sam Schott, who was recently named the 2025 NCAA Woman of the Year for her athletic and academic accomplishments. Sam made UT Tyler softball program history by playing 225 games with 211 starts and has won several awards including being selected as the All-Lone Star Conference and LSC Golden Glove awards. She chose UT Tyler because of the location and the legacy of the Patriot softball program. After graduating last spring, Sam continues her education as a first-year medical student in the School of Medicine’s Class of 2029, where she is reaching her goal of becoming a doctor. “ Tyler has a lot to offer with beautiful murals, delicious local restaurants, live music, movie theaters, coffee houses, shopping and historic buildings.” COHEN TAYLOR

Class of 2026, General Business BS Garland, TX

STU DE NT INSIG HT INTO T YLE R

Located in the heart of East Texas, the city of Tyler is a regional focal point for entertainment, retail, healthcare, dining, arts and outdoor recreation. For Garland native and general business alum Cohen Taylor, the city was one of many reasons he chose UT Tyler as his place to study. One of the many things Cohen loves about Tyler is the amenities. Whether you love outdoor adventures, the local music scene, or just a vibrant place to live and study, Tyler has something for everyone. Cohen also loved the fact that the city was not that far from his home.

“The city of Tyler is filled with beautiful scenic spots like the Tyler State Park and the Tyler Rose Garden,” he said. “Downtown also has a lot to offer, with beautiful murals, delicious local restaurants, live music, theaters, coffee houses, shopping and historic buildings. Plus, it’s located less than 100 miles east of Dallas, so it’s not too hard to make a trip to the Metroplex.” “Exploring the city of Tyler and its welcoming community made my first year of college seem less daunting,” Cohen added. 11

“ To get such good training at UT Tyler and to be able to take it and use it in the field has been amazing.”

CEDRIC GOLDEN

SPORTSWRITER Class of 2001, Journalism BA 2025 National Sports Media Association's Texas Sportswriter of the Year

BASKETBALL TO JOURNALISM Like many kids, Cedric Golden dreamed of playing basketball professionally. In 1984, he even helped lead the Bishop Gorman Crusaders to the TCIL state basketball tournament, where they lost in the championship game. But, he also had an aptitude for writing and knew from a young age that he would become a sportswriter. Early on, Cedric would read scoreboards in the newspaper, jotting down notes and coming up with his own stories about a game he saw on TV. He also participated in Bishop Gorman’s school newspaper, which solidified his decision to become a sportswriter. After high school, Cedric attended Tyler Junior College and served on the sports staff for the school newspaper. When it was time to transfer, UT Tyler just made sense. “UT Tyler had a good journalism program and made financial sense for me,” says Cedric. The excellent professors and dedicated staff helped Cedric to hone his writing skills and learn more about the written word, speech, presentation and organization.

During his time at UT Tyler, Cedric worked part-time at the Tyler Morning Telegraph and a local steakhouse while taking classes. “The people at UT Tyler were really instrumental in getting me through,” says Cedric. “I don’t know that I would have been able to do this without a degree from UT Tyler.” Cedric continued working part-time for the Tyler paper until joining the staff full-time as a sportswriter. During his tenure there, Cedric attended the ’93 Super Bowl in Atlanta, and gained valuable experience as a writer. In 1999, Cedric began working for the Austin AmericanStatesman where he’s been ever since, traveling all over to cover the dynamic world of high school and college sports. Earlier this year, Cedric was named the National Sports Media Association’s Texas Sportswriter of the Year, a testament to his dedication, wit and willingness to do what it takes to reach his goals.
