We are still the SBM ITB that develops innovative leaders with an entrepreneurial mindset and develops and disseminates knowledge of business management. With innovative, excellent quality, and world-class learning, we encourage entrepreneurial learning, business practices, and problem-solving.

Praise to Allah, this year, SBM is 18 years old. In 2021, SBM ITB has earned business accreditation from AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business). AACSB is the longest-serving global accrediting body for business schools and the largest business education network connecting learners, educators, and businesses worldwide.

Synonymous with the highest quality standards, AACSB accreditation inspires new ways of thinking within business education globally. As a result, less than five percent of the world's schools offering business degree programs hold AACSB business accreditation. This AACSB international accreditation confirms that SBM ITB already has quality control and implements continuous quality improvements specified in the AACSB standards.

The COVID-19 crisis has brought out the best in the faculty and staff of SBM ITB. I want to highlight our faculty members and professional staff. They worked remotely and were very responsive to students and partners; their attention to students' needs led to an excellent satisfaction survey of our students.

THE DEAN The end of the year 2021 has arrived. Over the last months, during the pandemic, each of us in SBM ITB has worked even longer hours and harder, shifting and adjusting to accomplish all we set out to do at the beginning of the year.

The achievements of our faculty and students include our success during the COVID-19 period, publication and dissemination of the latest research results that contribute to the government and society, and collaboration with ministries, industry, and alumni. This year, we have successfully conducted the 6th International Conference on Management in Emerging Markets (ICMEM) 2021, with the theme of nurturing new business landscapes to embrace the next normal, and presented three ministries and prominent speakers.

Through the centers, labs, and expertise groups, SBM ITB has also held Tridharma Perguruan Tinggi that focuses on teaching, research, and community service.

ITB officials online inauguration: Meet the new SBM ITB Program Directors SBM ITB just held a 20202021 Postgraduate Program Welcoming Session through an online platform, on Thursday (14/1/2021). This event was attended by 575 new postgraduate students both from Jakarta Campus and Bandung Campus.

Dean of SBM ITB Utomo Sarjono Putra introduced SBM ITB through a campus tour video. Utomo said that during Covid-19, the situation is hard to predict.

But, students should not be worry because SBM ITB will guide them to face any uncertain situation. CEO Indonesia AirAsia, Veranita Josephine who was a guest speaker shared her experiences related to business and her journey in AirAsia which helped her find her purpose in life.

“We are never too small to create an impact,” Veranita said.

All participants were then divided into 2 meetings through the Zoom platform based on their place of study, Jakarta Campus and Bandung Campus Focus due to the difference in focus program between Jakarta Campus and Bandung Campus. In the Bandung Campus meeting, the opening session introduction was opened by Mr. Henndy Ginting, a Full-Time SBM ITB Lecturer by playing a Psychologic Game.

While in Jakarta Campus Meeting, the Introduction opened by Yudo Anggoro, the Director of MBA ITB for Jakarta Campus.

Both meetings of Bandung Campus and Jakarta Campus explained about the journey of each campus with the addition of the Academic System, Programs, and Regulations in SBM ITB.

The Greater Hub: Coaching SMEs during the pandemic

Never-ending contribution, SBM ITB through The Greater Hub has held coaching clinics for Small Medium Enterprises (SME). The program which is held two times a year, aims to help SMEs to find out their root business problems.

Director of The Greater Hub Dr. Dina Dellyana stated, by knowing the problems, the SMEs could develop their business. “Although it is not easy to conduct coaching clinics during the pandemic, we are still committed to helping the SMEs,” said Dina.

The program was soft-launched on Friday, (05/02/2021) and followed by SMEs in West Java. The coaches themselves are MBA students under the supervision of the director of the incubator and MBA lecturers with expertise in operation, marketing, finance, and human resources.

SMEs that wish to join this program should register themselves through a website.

Then, pick a date for coaching before they will finally meet their coaches.

There are some advantages for SMEs who join this program. SMEs could improve their managerial skills in various fields such as marketing, financial management, operation, and human resources.

“They could also improve their branding ability and digital marketing to be implemented in their business,” Dina added.

Besides that, the SMEs could learn about the innovation process to develop a sustainable product. Then, they could understand the concepts and make planning for e-commerce business.

The Coaching clinic will run from 5 February 2021 to April 2021 for around 10 stamps of the coaching session. During coaching, the SMEs could determine the most suitable time for them to meet the coaches through the website already provided for that purpose.

Poverty and inequality are rising amid the pandemic

The emergence of Covid-19 has exacerbated poverty and inequality in this archipelago.

This problem is not only experienced by Indonesia but also countries all over the world. Special Staff of the Vice President of Indonesia

Bambang Widianto mentioned it through a guest lecture session held by MBA Jakarta in a business economics class. “Inequality is a challenge not only for Indonesia but also countries around the world,” said Bambang, Wednesday (10/03/2021) Based on data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), Bambang stated that almost 10.19 per cent of the people in Indonesia are categorized as poor.

Besides, 40% of Indonesians are in vulnerable positions in terms of poverty. This situation is compounded by the existence of Covid-19.

During the pandemic, our activities are restricted.

This situation causes the economy to weaken and lots of people have jumped into the poverty line. BPS noted that during September 2019 – September 2020, 2.76 million people in Indonesia jumped into the poverty line, one of the driving factors is Covid-19. Moreover, Bambang said that the pandemic is not only affecting the poverty level but also the growth of inequality in Indonesia.

He revealed that Indonesia is among the world’s most unequal countries. Through the data from Databook, he said, Indonesia is in the 4th place for the world’s most unequal countries. Bambang argued that the main drivers for inequality are inequality in access to basic services (education, health, and basic infrastructures), inequality in access to quality jobs, the higher concentration of assets going to the richest one per cent, and low capacity to deal with stock.

One of the examples is electricity distribution. “In Jakarta, we can see that electricity is everywhere. But in Timor Tengah Selatan, NTT, more than 53.000 households have no access to electricity and about 45 villages live in the dark,” he said.

SBM ITB Alumni creates technology-based shower room facility in Cipularang toll In optimizing the highway sanitation service, PT Jawara Bersih Nusantara (Jamban) together with PT Jasamarga Related Business (JMRB) inaugurate a technologybased shower room facility “Travoy Rilex”

in rest area KM 88 B Ruas Cipularang. This technology does not only provide clean comfortable sanitation but also implements cashless and touchless payment when entering the “Travoy Rilex”.

With the presence of Travoy Rilex, the shower area in the Cipularang toll is integrated with the platform that was developed by Jamban. “In this system, when we enter the shower area, we can use apps. This hope that the building is more durable and everyone who uses this facility will feel it is their own as it is more comfortable,” said CEO of Jamban Rudy Wahyu Perdana at the inauguration of Travoy Rileks, Friday (9/4/2021).

COO of Jamban Joobu Wahyudi said that Jamban also collaborated with some institutions such as Pertamina to manage toilets in some SPBUs (gas stations).

Then, Jamban collaborated with KONI (National Sports Committee of Indonesia) to optimize sanitation facilities in sports venues such as Jakabaring and

collaborated with the West Java Government to optimize the sanitation facilities in tourism areas.

Jamban is a BLEMBA 25 SBM-ITB student startup founded by Joobu Wahyudi, Rudy Wahyu Perdana, Jenjang Utomo. Jamban is a sanitation company that focuses on providing public toilets that are clean, safe, and healthy by utilizing a mobile application that is easy to use.

Besides, Jamban was a tenant of The Greater Hub, a startup incubator in SBM ITB. Joobu said that his team and he obtained lots of benefits by joining this program.

“There were so many benefits when participating in The Greater Hub, we can network with venture capitalists, lecturers, and also got input on the Jamban’s business plan so that it became even more mature. Then by participating in The Greater Hub we also expanded our knowledge, “said Joobu.

In addressing sanitation problems in Indonesia, Joobu emphasized the urgency to collaborate among stakeholders. Joobu mentioned that there are four million toilet spots in Indonesia, with that many toilets, Joobu said that Jamban can not work alone to solve this problem, and collaboration is needed. Lastly, Joobu hoped that in the future Jamban will become a sustainable business in all situations and be able to expand into the international market.

Language insight: Consumption or investment?

The desire to learn a foreign language can be divided into two categories: investment and consumption. Learning foreign languages for investment purposes is motivated by the desire to further one’s education,

negotiate with business partners, communicate with colleagues, and interact with customers. It was stated

by Prof. Silke Uebelmesser, Professor of Economics at Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, when she discussed the ins and outs of learning a foreign language from a macro viewpoint, (20/4/2021).

According to the findings of the study, respondents believe that by acquiring a foreign language, they would be able to obtain a better negotiating position.

Meanwhile, in terms of consumption, interest in language is used here to interact in general (both with friends, family, and relatives), during vacations, and to gain an understanding of the culture of the country.

Prof. Silke also explained demographically that every person has motives for studying a language.”Young people under the age of 35 are more likely to be inspired to learn as an investment.

Furthermore, the majority of young people are more likely to be ambitious, believing that they can improve their skills.

This is done so that they can be successful in the labor market,” said the University of Munich graduate.

Whereas for the average adult over the age of 35, the desire to learn a language is driven by a desire to consume based on relationships.

From the standpoint of human resources management, the requirement for foreign language skills can be a significant impediment. A company’s decision to invest in its workers would be influenced by cost, prices, time, resources, and perseverance. On the other hand, if the organization can hire staff faster and with more skills by hiring foreign workers, then it would alleviate the pressure of time. Sending workers to study and hiring foreign workers is a conundrum, particularly for companies in need of experts for technology transfer.

At the end of her lecture, she concluded that we must prepare ourselves with good language skills. As a result, we will have a higher level of competition in the global labor market. Don’t be afraid to speak up, make mistakes, and continue to learn. Let’s keep getting better.

Toronata Tambun: Learning to build profitable business without being greedy A business should not only be created for profit but also value, at least to create a job for people, as stated by Toronata Tambun, Founder & Director Aren Energy Investment, in his session as a guest lecturer in MBA ITB

Jakarta, Wednesday (9/6/2021). “At the end, microeconomics doesn’t only talk about the formula, but it is also about entertaining individual imbalance with the universe,” said Toronata.

Calling himself a lifetime learner, Toronata Tambun, who has gained exclusive experiences in top universities, such as Harvard Business School, MIT Sloan School of Management, University of Oxford, and Monash University, shared that talking about business means discussing the now-currency of the business, sustainability. He mentioned that it is important to have four things in a company: a unique value proposition of service or offering,

a paying customer, and their urge to buy our products (do our paying customers need our products to the extent they want to spend their money for it?), and the value and the founder who put their heart in the company. He provided an example of a company in Cambodia that proves that even though a company has no technology, it will sustain with great work.

The one-and-a-half-hour session passed quickly with various questions, and a course delivered interactively

by Toronata Tambun. He closed the session with this statement “We always need to remember that we do need serotonin hormone to be happy, but if it is too much, we could be someone who is crazy for power.

So, try to gain as much profit as possible from your business, but remember to always give impact to stop you from being a greedy businessman,” said Toronata.

He was very happy to learn so much from the MBA ITB class. Previously, Toronata Tambun has also attended various guest lecture sessions in the bachelor program or the magister program. His desire to learn and share with students has led him here at SBM ITB.

The importance of basic finance

In learning business, finance is an important subject to learn as it is the language of business. Most units in business communicate using financial terms. Something needs to be measurable to be managed.

Managerial finance, in particular, is related to the duties of the financial managers working in a business to maximize the shareholder’s wealth. As a sneak peeks into the SBM ITB MBA program, Dr. Ir. Subiakto Soekarno, MBA, one of the lecturers of MBA SBM ITB, did a webinar on finance tailored specially for those without a professional background in finance.

The content of his short lecture is part of one of the courses taught in the in-house program.

Simulating a classroom situation, he explained the fundamental managerial finance theories and financial

feasibility before starting a discussion with the attendees, mainly from Poltek Batam, the institution with which SBM ITB is collaborating. He used some examples from several case studies, like Astra International and Microsoft.

One of the reasons students taking an MBA program is to advance their career, especially those looking to become the top management in their company. SBM ITB’s MBA program provides an in-house professional business program collaborating with companies or institutions. Numerous multinational companies have been involved in this program, including Chevron, Pertamina, and Angkasa Pura II, to name a few.

This in-house program has over 70 percent of mid-top managerial level students looking to advance their careers. Notable alumni include Wahyu Sakti Trenggono, Indonesia’s Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries.

Students will take 39-course credits over 18 months.

This program’s schedule, content, and location are 100 percent customizable, fitting to the student’s schedule.

ICMEM 2021: Innovation, adaptation, and collaboration will restore tourism

With innovation, adaptation, and collaboration, it is believed that the tourism sector will remain a significant contributor to Indonesia’s economic growth during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is also believed that the tourism sector will recover soon by optimizing creativity and digitization. The Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno, emphasized this at the closing of “The 6th International Conference on Management in Emerging Markets (ICMEM) 2021”, held by SBM-ITB, Friday (13/8/2021).

An innovative measure to be applied in the tourism sector is using large-scale data to map tourism potential. The data will also strengthen the tourism subsector.

The tourism sector is also encouraged to adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic circumstances.

The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy creates CHSE standards (Cleanliness, Health, Safety, and Environmental Sustainability) that entrepreneurs in the tourism sector must follow. Those who have satisfied the CHSE standard will be awarded a certificate by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy.

Finally, the collaboration between all parties, including the government, academics, tourism entrepreneurs, and the media, is necessary to restore the tourism sector.

The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy also applies the 3G principle in recovering the tourism sector.

“Gercep, move quickly, geber, move together, and gaspol, utilize on all potential employment opportunities,” said Sandiaga.

In line with Sandiaga, on this occasion, the Founder of SBM ITB, Kuntoro Mangkusubroto, also believed that adaptation ability is a way to survive the COVID-19 pandemic. The community must also better prepare themselves to remain a champion in global competition.

The pandemic has changed all aspects of life, including the tourism sector. Thus, the application of digital technology is essential.

Digital marketing helps SMEs to adapt to the Covid-19 pandemic SMEs are one of the sectors most affected by Covid-19.

With restrictions on direct activities, it is difficult for SME actors to sell their products and it decreases their income. Thus, SME actors should utilize digital

technology to sell their products. Dr. eng. Manahan Siallagan, Director of the big data and business analytics laboratory of SBM ITB, said that during the Covid-19 pandemic, many SMEs were forced to close their physical stores and offices due to the implementation of Community Activity Restrictions (PPKM) in Indonesia. “There is no interaction, and it decreases the revenue of SME owners because they cannot sell directly,” said Manahan in a webinar entitled “Strategies to Increase Sales in the Pandemic Era with Digitalization: Digital Marketing,” Friday (10/9/2021). The webinar was held by the Big Data and business analytic laboratory of SBM ITB in collaboration with LPIK ITB and FESMUS. In his presentation, Manahan explained the importance of digital marketing to SME owners to adapt to the current pandemic.

According to Manahan, digital marketing has several advantages: adaptation during Covid-19, costeffectiveness, increasing credibility, staying ahead of competitors, and increasing consumer engagement.

Several things could be done by SME actors in doing digital marketing. The first thing is to conduct a webinar.

Manahan revealed that webinars can attract new customers. “Webinars help businesses connect with large, geographically dispersed audiences. In addition, with webinars, they can also provide information about new products, discuss market trends and at the same time serve as a platform to offer products to consumers,” said Manahan.

Furthermore, SME actors can also create blogs or business websites to provide more value to brands by offering relevant product information. In addition, Manahan added that blogs or websites can also be used in search engine optimization, brand building, and increasing consumer trust.

The third strategy for digital marketing for SMEs is to utilize email marketing to increase business visibility, increase customer retention, and promote products personally. Finally, Manahan explained about Google my business and Whatsapp business as digital marketing efforts. With WhatsApp business, communication with customers becomes easier.

Market and competitor analysis are important keys in business plans A business plan requires several aspect to analyze, such as market analysis and competitor analysis.

However, market analysis is one of the weakness of SMEs when creating a business plan.

It was said by Yulianto Suharto, PharmD, MBA, MSc, a lecturer, and researcher at SBM ITB when he had the opportunity to be a speaker in the business plan competition for SMEs iForteprenuer 4.0 held by PT iforte Solusi Infotek, Wednesday, (06/10/2021). In the event, Yulianto shared tips on creating an effective business plan in the digital era. He argued that market analysis is very important for making a business plan or business implementation. Market analysis will help SME owners to create products with the right targeted customers. Furthermore, analyzing competitors should also be a concern for SMEs in creating a business plan. Yulianto believes that we can determine our position in the market by analyzing the competitors. He deeply regrets that many SMEs do not pay much attention to competition in the market.

“SMEs are sometimes a bit less concerned about this competition, even though it is very important to see money in the market, something that is real or many people are fighting for,” added Yulianto. In addition to market and competitor analysis, in his presentation, Yulianto also explained several things that need to be analyzed by SME owners in creating a business plan, including marketing analysis, financial analysis, organizational plans, and risk mitigation. However, before carrying out the analysis, it is also necessary to consider the business’s ideas, vision, and mission to be developed. A business plan is as simple as pouring what is in our minds that appears suddenly into an effective writing and business plan. He then revealed that the thing that has been a challenge in creating a business plan is how to communicate the idea. “The challenge is how to communicate the idea so that it is wellstructured, simple, solid, and interesting,” added Yulianto, In the webinar, which more than 100 SMEs owners attended, Yulianto helped SMEs realize a simple, solid, and attractive business plan. Not only based on theory, but Yulianto also shared his experience as an SME owner.

MBA ITB received Best Digital Popular Brand Indonesia Top Brand Award 2021

MBA ITB received the Best Digital Popular Brand, Indonesia Top Brand Award 2021, for the Master of Management Category. Dr. Yunieta Anny Nainggolan received this award as representative and the Head of the Study Program.

This is the second time MBA ITB has received the Top Brand Award for its consistency in empowering leaders and entrepreneurs through problem-solving reward case learning methods. These methods align with the tagline of MBA ITB to educate students to be innovative leaders with an entrepreneurial mindset and to develop and disseminate knowledge of business and management for the betterment of business, government, and society.

Having more than 500 award categories, the Top Brand Award is the most anticipated award event by Indonesian brand people and is held twice a year: Top Brand Award Phase 1 and Phase 2. Specifically as Best Digital Popular Brand, Tops Brand Award 2021 in Phase 2 is based on the achievement of

the MBA ITB to get more than 70,000 review pages across the internet and more than 4 million visits on its website www.sbm.itb.ac.id.

As stated by the CEO of TRAS N CO Indonesia and Founder of INFO BRAND Group, Tri Raharjo, at the opening of the award session, this award can be a testament to the success of MBA ITB in providing important information in an interesting way to the public.

This is in view of the purpose of establishing the Top Brand Award for superior brands with outstanding performance in the Indonesian market.

The award is given by referring to the Top Brand Index, an official Top Brand survey with a methodology operated independently by Frontier Research.

Meanwhile, Yunieta hopes that this award will continue to motivate so that we continue to make continuous improvements so that our brand can provide value for money and value for career to alumni, students, prospective students. Besides, it can provide benefits and impact on business, government, society, and the nation.

SBM ITB students propose the concept of branding for companies Students of the Management Study Program, School of Business and Management (SBM) ITB presented their research results to find branding strategies for companies in the MB4048 Emotional Branding course

led by lecturer Drs. Herry Hudrasyah, M.A. The presentation, joined by six student teams, was a form of the final semester exam by presenting the research results and branding ideas for the analyzed companies. Conducted hybrid (offline and online), the results of this research can be used by companies in branding their business.

Tonton Taufik Rachman, a practitioner in marketing, and Lik Gayantini Ari, an MBA ITB lecturer, as judges and provide input on the ideas and results of the student’s research. Tonton and Lik Gayantini, really appreciated the ideas and results of students’ research because they were able to generate ideas for companies to brand and adapt during a pandemic.

In addition, Lik Gayantini also appreciated students’ enthusiasm because they can produce research even though it is carried out in a pandemic situation. “Proud that students can do research during the pandemic,” said Lik Gayantini or called Ibu Lik, to students who made presentations on Wednesday (12/15/2021).

In the presentation, students explained various ideas and insights in conducting research. There are several industries analyzed by students, ranging from corporate brands from fashion and film to hospitality industries.

One of the brands analyzed is Zara, a fashion brand from Spain well-known throughout the world.

In this Emotional Branding course, students are given the challenge of branding certain brands to increase company excellence. For example, in Zara, students try to do branding by proposing to apply the concept of sustainability in their fashion business model. Zara is famous for the concept of fast fashion, which is considered less environmentally friendly.

In addition, in this course, students are also taught how to give an emotional effect to a brand. For example, with a sensory branding approach such as smell, sound, touch, and signs in the brand.
