Palm Beach County Victim Services and Certified Rape Crisis Center (PBC Victim Services) and the Library System recognize April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). We aim to raise awareness about sexual violence and educate communities on prevention. This year’s theme is “Drawing Connections: Prevention Demands Equity.” It urges individuals organizations and institutions to promote racial equity and respect by changing oppressive systems. Oppressive systems such as racism, sexism, classism, heterosexism, ageism and ableism contribute to higher rates of sexual harassment, assault and abuse. Recognizing historical conditions and our privileges can help change the future.

Ending all forms of oppression is necessary to end sexual violence. PBC Victim Services, the local Certified Rape Crisis Center, provides free and confidential services to primary and secondary victims of sexual violence, domestic violence, stalking and other violent crimes. Survivors, allies and the community can attend events and access resources provided by PBC Victim Services and the Library throughout the month. Book displays and materials are available on www.pbclibrary.org/SAAM.

On this nationally-recognized day, advocates can kick off SAAM events for April. Survivors, supporters and professionals can write their expressions on a flag, which will represent victims served in 2022. We encourage 565 community members to stand united against sexual violence, representing the men, women and children who were victims of sexual assault in Palm Beach County.

Wed, Apr 05 (All day)

Communities worldwide come together to support victims of sexual violence. We are here to help and hear you. We must change how we respond to sexual assault, so we start by believing survivors. Join us in this global message of support and encourage others to pledge to believe and support survivors on their journey to justice and healing. If you would like to participate, please contact Jeannie Hoban at 561-625-2526.

National Denim Day

Wed, Apr 26 (All day)

Wear denim to show support for survivors! This global event was triggered by a ruling from the Italian Supreme Court claiming that because the victim was wearing tight jeans on the day she was raped, she must have helped her assailant remove them and thus the sex was consensual and not rape. The rape conviction was overturned. The following day, in a show of solidarity, women working in the Italian government wore jeans to protest the decision of the Italian Parliament.

Celebrate National Library Week

APRIL 23 - 29

National Library Week is an annual celebration highlighting the valuable role libraries, librarians and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening our communities.

In the mid-1950s, research showed that Americans were spending less on books and more on radios, televisions and musical instruments. Concerned that Americans were reading less, the American Library Association (ALA) and the American Book Publishers formed a nonprofit citizens organization called the National Book Committee in 1954. The committee’s goals were ambitious. They ranged from “encouraging people to read in their increasing leisure time” to “improving incomes and health” and “developing strong and happy family life.”

In 1957, the committee developed a plan for National Library Week based on the idea that once people were motivated to read, they would support and use libraries. With the cooperation of ALA and with help from the Advertising Council, the first National Library Week was observed in 1958 with the theme “Wake Up and Read!”

PROMOTING INCLUSIVITY AND AUTISM ACCEPTANCE AT THE LIBRARY

April is Autism Acceptance Month, a month to promote both education about the differences of people with autism and appreciation for those differences. Individuals with autism may have difficulties with social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication or experience uncommon responses to sensory stimuli. Autistic people also often demonstrate a highly attuned sense of justice, creative problem solving skills and expertise in their social interests.

As part of the Palm Beach County Library System’s mission to connect communities, inspire thought and enrich lives, special activities and events have been tailored to individuals on the spectrum. The Library developed Sensory Friendly Browsing events to ensure individuals with sensory sensitivities can enjoy the use of the Library and its services in a safe and welcoming environment. In 2022, the Library earned the distinction of becoming an Autism Friendly Business with recognition of staff’s fulfillment of training by the Florida Atlantic University Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (CARD).

The Library has an ever-growing assortment of activities dedicated to all ages on the autism spectrum, such as Virtual Sensory Story Time (VSST). These activities provide an opportunity to engage members through an inclusive and interactive Zoom storytime complete with books, songs and sensory activities.

As part of the VSST experience, all branches of our Library offer special sensory storytime bags to enhance the curriculum of VSST. The bags’ contents include a scarf, squishy ball, shaker eggs, two stick puppets, printed song lyrics and finger plays (while supplies last).

Thanks to the support of the Friends of the Palm Beach County Library System, Inc. and with help from a generous grant provided by the Autism Services Grant Council, fresh additional storytime bags were able to be produced. You can support the Autism Services Grant Council by switching your license plate to the Florida Support Autism Programs License Plate which helps ensure vital programs like ours can continue to support the autistic community. Get your plate by visiting www.autismlicenseplate.com.

See pages 10 & 11 for this month’s special needs activities.

April 2023

It’s National Deaf History Month! Did you know that the football huddle was invented by someone who was deaf? Football players at Gallaudet University, a university dedicated to the education of deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals, started to huddle up to keep opposing teams from seeing what plays they were signing to each other.

The Palm Beach County Library System offers a variety of resources for the Deaf and hard-of-hearing, including, but not limited to:

Assisted Listening Devices are available at many locations for those attending library activities and classes.

Closed-caption DVDs and videos are available for loan at all locations. DVDs in our general collection, including foreign films, have the option of being played with English subtitles.

Full-length ASL movies in our general collection.

We also have staff fluent in ASL. For more information on which locations have staff that can accommodate you....
