Alumni Messages Two years ago, Professor E. “Sonny” Harris approached attorney Michael Coard seeking a means to resolve the deteriorating conditions at Cheyney University. Dr. Harris’ alarm was the genesis of Heeding Cheyney’s Call (HCC). Heeding Cheyney’s Call is a coalition of retired and current faculty, alumni, students and education advocates seeking to remediate the calamitous conditions Cheyney is facing: declining enrollment, escalating fiscal deficits, deteriorating facilities, poor leadership and an ongoing policy of underfunding by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Cheyney University National Alumni Association Board of Directors fully supports this initiative. The group met regularly, expanded its membership and held a press conference on October 23, 2013 to announce plans to seek redress in the federal court. After 10 months of unproductive meetings, HCC was forced to file a federal lawsuit against both the US Department of Education and Secretary Arnie Duncan and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Papers were filed in US Federal Court in October 2014 and the Honorable Mark K. Kearney has been assigned to the case. Thus far, the US Department of Education and Arnie Duncan’s lawyers assert they gave Pennsylvania funding and it is the Commonwealth who should be held accountable for how it was spent or not spent. The Commonwealth’s lawyers are asking for the case to be dismissed outright. Our legal team is prepared for all contingencies and we expect to prevail based upon the long standing policies of inequitable funding by the Commonwealth and the failure of the federal government to ensure equal protection under the law.

A major Philadelphia avenue has been renamed to honor a legendary black journalist. City Avenue (US Route 1) between Presidential Boulevard and Monument Road has been officially designated as “Ed Bradley Way” by an act of the Pennsylvania State Legislature. A bill requesting the change had been submitted by State Senator Vincent Hughes. “I am deeply gratified that my colleagues joined together to honor Ed Bradley, a true pioneer in American journalism.” said Senator Hughes in an statement to PABJ PRISM. “Mr. Bradley was nothing short of an icon and his memory should serve as a reminder of what hard work, dedication, and intelligence can achieve. It’s a wonderful tribute that a street in his home town will forever bear his name.” The effort to “co-name” the stretch of City Avenue, home to a number of
broadcast stations in the Delaware Valley was initiated by New York filmmaker Leroy McCarthy ‘92, an alumus of Cheyney University of Pennsylvania. Ed Bradley graduated from the historically black university in 1964. Upon graduation, he started work as a reporter for Philadelphia’s WDAS-FM, eventually rising to become one of the first African American correspondents at CBS News, where he gained national acclaim for his work on the program “60 Minutes.” According to McCarthy, “informal discussions regarding a permanent honor to Bradley’s legacy” began at Cheyney’s 2013 Homecoming. “Those discussions led to a full grassroots Details regarding a time and effort,” to research a suitable location to location of the Ed Bradley Way memorialize the beloved journalist. dedication will be forthcoming. “The planning for the Ed Bradley Way dedication has begun,” reports McCarthy.
