DESIGN SUMMARY & DESIGN BRIEF This Project is aimed at providing a Public Library to the society for public users of all ages, ranging from Children to adults which’s primary goal is to provide materials and services in a variety of media, in order to meet their educational, recreational, and informational requirements.

EXISTING CONDITIONS Public buildings like offices, a dance studio, a food plaza; Residential estates are around the site. Public facilities are also available on site like the Bus Stop, etc. There’s a major Road to the site as well as bike and pedestrian ways to ease accessibility.

SITE LOCATION This site is located in Zhenhai District Ningbo, Zhejiang, China - 29.923175, 121.617819 ZHENHAI is a district and former county of the sub-provincial city of Ningbo in Zhejiang Province in eastern China. It has a population of 200,000. Zhenhai District has about 443,000 residents. Zhenhai District is situated southeast of Luotuo, and southwest of Guisi.
WHY CHOSEN? a. The site is situated near offices and residential areas, which I feel will be useful to the community.

b. Easy accessibility from the roads and nearby areas.
TRAFFIC AND ACCESSIBILITY AROUND THE SITE The roads around the site tend to have a minimal traffic. The site is located near a Main Street which provides easy accessibility from the main road to its users and the environment. Its location is highly visible from the every part of the street and the shopping area. It’s not hidden from the road by trees or other buildings. There is a Pedestrian Access of about 4m wide, which is safe for all people, including older, and children. There is a Bus Stop adjacent the site, which makes it more easy for users of Public Transport, and Community buses to access the site. The Subway is about 1.37 km away.
PROBLEMS One of the problems identified on site is the absence of a public library or recreational place around the site as the nearest library is about 10km away. However, the site was seen as a big opportunity to provide the library service to the community

From the main entrance, the building has automatic doors that are left opened for more accessibility for its users. As it’s a public building, opening and closing at all times might not aid more easy flow of people in and out of the building. The Stairs are located by the right of the main entrance which can be seen easily as soon as entering the building and can be accessible enough with signages at each floor/level. The height of the bookshelves are also enough for 2 wheelchairs to pass.

REFLECTIONS The 16 weeks of lectures really put me through stages and process of architectural design. I learnt how to view a design from the user’s perspective and a designer’s perspective as well. Which I’ll further develop myself on. Going through the stages of design was never a thing I’ve ever been through before, but the lectures did justice to it. Which clearly taught the different stages of design. I also learnt never to be fixed to a design idea. There should be room for exploration of ideas. I also learnt the importance of sketching and making sketches. Every study material sent were greatly useful, alongside the lectures and individual tutorials.

The Library design started with having a look at the requirements. A site was then needed to host the library while a personal brief was generated. with the main area of focus on “Accessiibility”, being able to accommodate everyone, regardless the special ability. I then came up with a concept idea, which couldn’t meet the required needs after exploration. A new concept got started being worked upon, which was then developed until the final design.
