Creating & sustaining communities where all are welcome.

A person needs to have access to services and connections beyond the walls of their home: places where they are not only allowed, but welcomed.

How does a real estate company accomplish this mission? We make sure that those opportunities exist within communities by partnering with other nonprofits and municipalities to provide appropriate spaces.

CIL can’t make community, but we can develop buildings in ways that encourage people to form them.

Capewell Lofts Family Life Education Center Atlantic Works Capewell Townhomes

Capewell Lofts Hartford, CT

The Capewell Horse Nail Factory was a prominent structure located in Hartford’s oldest and most historic neighborhood. Working with community stakeholders, CIL transformed the debilitated structure into beautiful modern apartments and commercial space.

Atlantic Works Hartford, CT

In partnership with the Connecticut Community Nonprofit Alliance, CIL has created an office community, primarily occupied by nonprofits, that promotes efficiencies and collaboration for its member tenants. The building was built in 1903 by the Atlantic Screw Works, one of the many manufacturing companies that made Hartford a worldwide leader in manufacturing innovation.

CIL and the Alliance collaborated to create a space that would allow numerous nonprofit organizations to operate in a centrally located building.

By sharing conference rooms and technology, each organization is able to operate more efficiently than if they rented space in a traditional commercial building.

The proximity of the organizations also facilitates collaborations that might not otherwise occur. Each tenant organization signs a membership agreement with the Alliance that provides access to shared conference room spaces and technology that otherwise might not be affordable.

Family Life Education

Louise Earle Loomis Children’s Wellness Center Hartford, CT An integral piece to CIL’s Capewell Lofts development included the restoration and renovation of 5,400 SF of commercial office space. This space was fit-out in 2018 by CIL for Family Life Education, a nonprofit that focuses on helping women learn life skills such as child-rearing, cooking and job seeking.

The Children’s Wellness Center is the first facility of its kind in the Northeast to implement a spectrum of wellness strategies while incorporating early learning opportunities and hands-on education and practice for parents. They focus on childhood obesity prevention, nutrition and healthy eating, and early childhood development.

Capewell Townhomes Hartford, CT

The Capewell Townhomes are located on a formerly vacant lot at the corner of Popieluszko Court and Wyllys Street in Hartford’s historic Charter Oak neighborhood. The homes were developed for households at or below 80% of Hartford’s area median income and are part of an effort to increase homeownership in the city.

The two to three bedroom homes were designed in a traditional neighborhood style with details such as front porches and wrought iron fencing that enhance the areas character.

All of the homes also include modern amenities such as garages, basements, attics and central air conditioning.

As of Winter 2018, all 16 townhomes have been sold.

The Capewell Townhomes are part of CIL’s larger transformation of the former Capewell Horse Nail factory complex.
