WELCOME TO BELMONT! AT BELMONT, IT ALL STARTS WITH TT We believe that your time here can be life-shaping in numerous ways. In order to start you off on the right track, we are kicking off your Belmont career with Welcome Week! Welcome Week is part of our Towering Traditions (TT) Orientation Program. TT is designed to connect you to our community, prepare you for all facets of life at Belmont and help you feel at ease as you enter into this next chapter of your life. Not to mention, TT is full of unforgettable experiences! We hope that you dig deep during these next four days. Show up and bring your passions, abilities and curiosity to the table. Ask questions. Meet people.

Be yourself. Reflect often. Soak in the memories. This is your college journey, and we hope you fully lean into this experience.

We want you to succeed, and we cannot wait for you to experience all that Belmont has to offer. Study this booklet for more details on Welcome Week, and enjoy the journey.

You will receive Well Core credit, a graduation requirement, for participating in Main Sessions. For these events, you will need to bring your Belmont ID to receive Well Core credit.

Kick-Off Dinner | for students/parents moving in on Thursday or Friday morning

5–6 p.m. | Grand Maddox Atrium Enjoy a complimentary dinner with your fellow classmates and their families. The Belmont community will be bustling with the excitement of live music and great food!

Opening Session A | for students/parents moving in on Thursday or Friday before noon

6:15–7:15 p.m. | Curb Event Center Join the Orientation Council, President Jones, and Tower Team Leaders as you learn about the amazing journey you are about to begin. *Note: Students who attend the Friday night dinner and opening session, will not need to attend the Saturday night dinner and opening session. However, new students will need to attend the Saturday night Tower Jam and Tower Jam Part II regardless of move-in date and time. Parents can attend the Sunday morning Welcome Week events.

6:15–7:15 p.m. | Curb Event Center Join the Orientation Council, President Jones, and Tower Team Leaders as you learn about the amazing journey you are about to begin.

7:15–7:45 p.m. | Curb Event Center This high energy kick-off event is just you… and the other 2000+ new students joining the Bruin Community together. You won’t want to miss it.

Tower Jam Part Ii : Meet Your TT Group | all new students

7:45–9:15 p.m. | Main Lawn At this time, students will meet their TT Group. Each TT Group consists of 10-20 new students and is led by a Tower Team Leader (an upperclassman). Jump in on the fun and get connected to your Bruin community!

Catholic Mass

9:30–10:30 p.m. | Janet Ayers Academic Center University Chapel Catholic Mass will be held in the University Chapel and is open to anyone wishing to participate.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 22 Coffee

8–9 a.m. | Maddox Grand Atrium Coffee will be available to jump start your morning.

Worship service | parents welcome 8:45–9:30 a.m. | Curb Event Center Begin your Sunday Towering Traditions experience with a time 4 | BELMONT UNIVERSITY

of worship and celebration! This meaningful time of song, prayer, scripture reading and short meditation from our University Minister sets the tone for the academic year. All are welcome for this time of reflection and celebration.

Matriculation Service | parents welcome 9:45–10:30 a.m. |Curb Event Center Each year, Belmont University welcomes its new students with a Matriculation Ceremony to signify their acceptance into the school’s academic program. Students recite the Community Commitment and Academic Integrity Pledges—which are commitments to themselves, to their peers and to the University.

Parent Dismissal 10:30–11 a.m. | Curb Event Center At this time, we start our student-only portion of Welcome Week. Parents, we ask for you to plan travel accordingly to leave campus by 11 a.m., allowing your student to fully participate in Welcome Week.

Meet With Your TT Group 11–11:15 a.m. | Main Lawn Once you’ve said goodbye to your parents and family members, reconnect with your TT Group on the Mail Lawn.

Lunch With Your TT Group 11:15–1 p.m. | Harrington Place Dining Enjoy lunch with your TT group.

Welcome Week Teams Meetup 1–2 p.m. | Welcome Week Rooms Head to your Welcome Week Rooms as you dive into the fun with other TT groups.

Main Session 2: A Community of Stories 2–4 p.m. | Curb Event Center It is time for our first student-only main session! To kick things off, join us as Dr. Syb, University Ministries, Counseling Services, TOWERING TRADITIONS 2021 | 5

Dr. Mary Clark and the 2021 Orientation Council explore the power of stories.

Church Fair 4–5:30 p.m. | South Lawn Now is the time to get plugged in to a local church! University Ministries has invited more than 60 different local churches (representing various Christian denominations) to campus to give you a chance to meet church leaders, talk with Belmont student involved at each church and begin the process of finding a new church home.

Dinner 4:30–6:30 p.m. | Harrington Place Dining You’ll eat with your Tower Team Group during dinner, have the opportunity to visit the Church Fair and have a little down time before the Big Game.

Main Session 3 | The Big Game 7–9 p.m. | Curb Event Center The big game: enough said. See if your TT group has what it takes to do go down in Belmont royalty. Don’t miss this mustattend event.

Beaman Breakdown 9–10 p.m. | Curb Event Center It’s time for Beaman Breakdown! Connect with the 2,000+ other new Belmont Bruins in this . Dancing, karaoke, fun-filled, memorymaking night! FitRec opportunities and good times await you.

MONDAY, AUGUST 23 Welcome Week Teams + Morning Meet-Ups 8:45–9:45 a.m. | Welcome Week Rooms Start your morning off right. Meet up with your TT group in your assigned room and get ready for another great day!

Main Session 4: A Community Of Learning 10–10:45 a.m. | Curb Event Center College is all about learning - and we are down with learning. Join us as we explore academic life at Belmont.

Meet With Your Academic College 11 a.m.–1 p.m. | various locations Academic life often happens within your academic college. This session gives you a chance to meet the professors and other new students in your college. Lunch will also take place with your academic college during this session.

Classroom Tours 1–1:45 p.m. | meet your TT Group on the Main Lawn Meet up with your TT Leader to see your First Year Seminar classroom. You can also bring your class schedule to ask your TT Leader about the ins-and-outs on how to navigate your first day of classes.

Bruin Vets Welcome Session 1–2 p.m. | Bruin Vets Center During this session, we will explore the connections of military, academic and campus resources. This session will assist with meeting other student veterans on campus and visit the Bruin Vets Center.

Main Session 5: A Community of Care 2 p.m.–4:15 p.m. | Curb Event Center Here at Belmont, we believe caring is cool. At this main session, hear more about Belmont’s commitment to each other, our commitment to our core community values and the implications these commitments have for our day-to-day life together.

Organize Your Room 4:15–5 p.m. | your residence hall room Sometimes, you just need space to organize your room and settle into life in your new home. Head to your residence hall and meet your neighbors as you finish setting up your room.

Motion Pictures Safety Seminar & Safety Test (mandatory for all MOT majors) 4:30–9 p.m. (dinner break included) | Johnson Center 115 Belmont takes safety seriously. This will be a “How to Safely Run a Shoot” demonstration followed by the Safety Test. Every MOT student must participate and pass the test to be able to work on any sets in the fall.

Main Session 6: Storytelling Session 7–9 p.m. | Curb Event Center Stories have power: stories connect us, stories shape us and stories inspire us. As you enter the Belmont community, you are bringing your story into the Belmont story. And now, your story is colliding with other people’s stories. We believe this collision of stories is beautifully packed with possibility. In this session, we will explore past stories shaping our future stories.

Reshall Hangout Hosted By Your Spiritual Life Assistant 9–10:30 p.m. | various locations This gathering gives you a chance to meet other students within surrounding resident halls, as well as your Spiritual Life Assistants (SLAs), seek to help freshmen find a community within their residence halls and navigate spiritual life at Belmont. Meeting spaces are listed below: Maddox Courtyard: Kennedy, Maddox, Wright, Thrailkill and other upperclassman halls McWhorter Patio: Patton and Potter North Lawn: Heron, Pembroke, Hail

TUESDAY, AUGUST 24 Dance Placement Auditions 8:45–10:30 am | Black Box Theater Auditions for placement into upper-level dance classes. Open to 8 | BELMONT UNIVERSITY

all students interested. Dance faculty will teach the audition class in ballet, modern, jazz and tap; students should wear appropriate attire/shoes for each style. Questions may be addressed to Debbie Belue at debbie.belue@belmont.edu.

Welcome Week Teams + Morning Meet-Ups 8:45–9:45 a.m. | Welcome Week Rooms Each morning, we are giving you the opportunity to meet your peers who share similar interests. Head to your assigned Welcome Week Rooms with your TT Leader and jump in on the fun!

Main Session 7: Your Community 10–11:15 a.m. | Curb Event Center One of the great things about Belmont is that it is located in the city of Nashville! In this session, we will discuss what it means to be a citizen of Belmont and Nashville as we prepare for our afternoon SERVE experience.

Reshall Service Connection 11:15–12 p.m. | Curb Event Center Service is at the core of who we are at Belmont. To model this, every Residence Hall is connected to a local organization.

Throughout the year, you will have to opportunity to join this organization in the great work they are doing to serve the city of Nashville. In this session, you will go with your go to your ResHall location and learn more about your hall’s community partner.

Lunch With Your Reshall Floor 12 p.m.–1:30 p.m. | Harrington Place Dining

Student Employment Fair 12 p.m.–2 p.m. | Maddox Grand Atrium If you are interested in an on-campus job or working with an organization in the Nashville community, you will want to take advantage of our employment fair. Bring a copy of your Fall Semester schedule and come prepared to interview with several different representatives.

Pick Your Adventure 2:30–3 p.m. | Welcome Week Rooms Before you fill the ‘ville, meet with your Welcome Week Room to discuss your adventure.

Nashventure 3 p.m.–7 p.m. | various locations in Nashville During this time, your TT group and/or Welcome Week room will head out into Nashville for the afternoon! See your TT leader for Specific Instructions.

Mandatory Reshall Meeting | freshman halls only

7–8 p.m. | at your ResHall Each residence hall has a mandatory floor meeting before the start of the academic semester. Ask your Resident Assistant for more information.

Life Under The Tower

8:15–9:30 p.m. | Curb Event Center Every year, before the first day of classes, new students gather to participate in this symbolic event. This event brings the spirit of Belmont forward from past to the present as we come together “to ensure Belmont College of days more glorious and opportunities more abundant.” (Quoted from a Founder’s Day address by Dr. Gabhart, March 11, 1963).
