Design for Good Dedication to the Transformational Power of Design

In addition to preparing students to confidently enter their chosen industry, the O’More experience also nurtures their ability to discern and articulate a personal vision of deep meaning and purpose. Each of our programs embeds work with external nonprofit organizations through collaborative projects that expand our empathy, amplify community missions and enhance social and environmental equity.

EXPAND OUR EMPATHY

The fashion industry is a demanding and competitive field, but at its core is the ability to impact people’s lives for the better. This is the North Star belief for O’More designers. We have partnered with multiple nonprofit organizations, from GiGi’s Playhouse to CreatiVets, Daybreak Arts, Tennessee Donor Services and Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee. As we celebrated the past 25 years of our in-person fashion show, O’More went back to our roots and partnered with Saddle Up!, a local organization that provides opportunities for children and youth with disabilities.

SOCIALLY AND ENVIRONMENTALLYINFORMED DESIGN

In a course themed “Designing for the Blue Zones: Community Health and Wellbeing in North Nashville,” architecture students investigated how architecture and urban planning can enhance an environment and population.

After meeting and collaborating with the American Institute of Architects’ Middle Tennessee Academy of Architecture for Health, students spent the semester finding design-based solutions that could shift North Nashville into becoming a blue zone (an area where the population tends to live longer and live healthier lives than the global average). Groups adopted different social determinants of health (health and health care, economic stability, education access, built environment). At the end of the year, they presented their ideas to the Belmont and broader Nashville community, including members of North Nashville’s First Community Church, The Store and the Civic Design Center.

DESIGN THAT WELCOMES AND SUPPORTS

O’More’s interior design students partnered with Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy for the ADA training and home modification interprofessional experience to better understand how to accommodate those with physical and mental differentiation.

Interior Studio II students also reimagined the Interior Design department’s third floor in O’More’s Hitch building, emphasizing universal design that surpasses ADA requirements through elements like custom-built furnishings, innovative way-finding systems and adaptive lighting to create a space that welcomes all.

Our Spaces

We’re all about making sure students feel encouraged and set up for success to explore their creative talents.

Our students deserve the best spaces possible to work in and show off their craft. Top-of-the-line technology and resources aren’t amenities for a design education: they are necessities. In addition to providing these tools, we are committed to creating a comfortable environment where students experience community.

GABHART STUDIOS

Renovated during the summer of 2022, the Gabhart Studios are on the second floor of Belmont’s Gabhart Student Center, next to O’More’s home base, Hitch Hall. Designed in-house by our architecture faculty, this space is equipped with three drafting studios, faculty offices, a printing station and endless pinup room. It’s an ideal space for students to learn, present and collaborate. In addition, O’More students have access to an annex space and computer lab for their work.

HITCH HALL

Most of O’More’s classes are housed in Hitch Hall, a 22,000 square-foot facility where each element of design, finish and furniture was intentionally chosen to enhance the student experience. The space boasts six design studios, two computer/CAD labs and a dedicate critique space known as the “Crit Pit.”

Within these spaces, students have access to cuttingedge equipment, such as 3D printers, laser cutters, highspeed plotters, industry standard Juki machines, knitting machines, Alvanon dress forms, Browzwear virtual 3D software and computerized pattern drafting equipment.

DIGITAL FABRICATION LAB

Known as the DigiFablab and found on the second floor of Hitch, this space can be used by students completing courserelated content to explore, develop and present design ideas. It is equipped with laser cutters, 3D printers, a CNC milling machine, 3D scanner and vinyl cutter, as well as workspaces and equipment for post-processes.

Community By Design

Student Opportunities

As an O’More student, you are part of a community starting day one — a community that cares about you as an individual and will encourage you in the pursuit of your goals.

Becoming a leader in the industry doesn’t happen in a box; it requires new perspectives, collaboration and the desire to grow. That’s why we focus on hands-on experiences, real-world learning and intentional opportunities to build and engage with community on and off campus.

STUDY ABROAD + AWAY

There is so much inspiration to see in your field, miles away from Belmont and Nashville. We encourage our students to take advantage of study abroad opportunities, which help them gain global perspective regarding architecture, interior design and fashion design and merchandising. Students from all of our degrees can take their education abroad through programs and opportunities Belmont offers. Our Fashion and Interior Design programs partner with Metropolia University in Helsinki, Finland; our Fashion programs also feature partnerships with Regents University in London and Florence University of the Arts.

We also offer study away opportunities within the United States, featuring options in New York City, Washington D.C. and Los Angeles. These programs not only help students learn about regional design traditions, but to connect with industry professionals and access unique internships.

STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

Connect more closely with your peers and professional networks through these O’More collectives:

• American Institute of Architecture Students

• International Interior Design Association

• National Retail Federation Student Association

• Student Advisory Council

The Belmont community has more than 180 student organizations you can get involved with! Whether you’re interested in service groups, Fraternity & Sorority Life, intramural sports, religious fellowship... the list goes on and on.

INTERNSHIPS

Getting out there and immersing yourself in your creative field isn’t just a helpful step in your education — it’s essential. O’More students are consistently getting connected to the workforce through internships not only in Nashville, but across the country and globe!

VOCATIONAL COMPASS AND GUIDANCE

Developed from the University’s commitment to whole-person formation as a practice that demands academic, social and spiritual attention, O’More guides students to understand, explore, develop and practice their God-given talents, preparing them to “lead extraordinary lives of purpose, character, and wisdom.”

The Vocational Compass program is a resource for students that helps them connect with their field of study in a practical manner. The program connects students with local professionals, who help them navigate their educational preparation for, and entry into, their chosen professions. Students meet with their mentors at least once per month for discussions, office/studio visits and additional activities to gain more insight into the professional world and prepare for the career they want.

To fully prepare students for their chosen futures, we also offer opportunities for intentional vocational discernment through orientation programs and enhanced academic advising.

“Interior Design at Belmont provided me with a space to develop skills like sketching, drafting and space planning. But what really impacted me is the way all my professors give us safe environments to ask questions, grow our leadership skills and become excellent communicators. Through my classes, I feel confident selecting appropriate materials for projects, designing healthy buildings and working with professionals.
