Belmont University offers a highly-competitive undergraduate program for 21st century journalists reporting for the digital age. The New Century Journalism Program provides a progressive brand of journalistic training to aspiring journalists. WHAT MAKES US UNIQUE? The New Century Journalism Program was one of the first multimedia undergraduate programs in the country.

All courses are taught by veteran journalists who deliver cutting-edge instruction using the latest digital software and technology. Students receive hands-on training in writing for multiple media platforms, visual and digital storytelling and video and audio editing.

Our career placement rates are exceedingly high. A major driver behind this is our extensive internship program.

Journalism majors will have opportunities for a variety of professional internships following their second year.

Internships permit our students to develop extensive portfolios of work by the time of graduation. Positions are regularly available at newspapers, magazines, online news operations, radio and television stations and at dozens of highly-respected public relations firms.

Students have interned at The Tennessean, Nashville Scene, Journal Communications, The Country Music Association and CMT. Additionally, the Belmont East/West Program allows students to undertake full-time professional semesterlength internships in New York and Los Angeles and work with organizations including CBS Evening News, CNN, Huffington Post, Oprah and The Late Show With David

Letterman. Journalism majors can also join the staff of Belmont’s award-winning student news and information outlet, www.belmontvision.com and contribute to the recently launched belmontfeed.com online magazine.

CONCENTRATIONS & CURRICULUM Students majoring in journalism may choose to earn either the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree.

Required core course in the 33-hour major include: • Communication Law • Digital Storytelling • Entrepreneurial Media • Foundations of Journalism • Introduction to Audio and Video Production • Mass Media and Society • Media Ethics • Media Writing I • Media Writing II Elective courses include Advanced Video Production, Arts & Entertainment Reporting, Covering Diverse Populations, Journalism Internship, Magazine Workshop, Social Media Reporting, Sports Writing and Visual Communication.

The New Century Journalism Program also offers minors in Entertainment Journalism and General Journalism Studies.
