The Tennessee Health Care Hall of Fame, created by Belmont University and the McWhorter Society with support from Founding Partner the Nashville Health Care Council, serves to honor those health care pioneers, innovators and practitioners who have contributed to Tennessee’s status as a major player in our nation’s health care industry.

At today’s Induction Ceremony and Luncheon, we invite you to join us in honoring eight iconic health care leaders who, through many years of service, research, practice and education, have changed the landscape of health care across our state. Together, the inaugural inductees’ careers span more than a century of medical and corporate accomplishments, and their lives highlight Tennessee’s impact on the national and international health care stage.

Belmont University is honored to host the Tennessee Health Care Hall of Fame on our campus as we celebrate leaders who have contributed to the success and growth of Tennessee’s health care industry.

As an educational institution with ever-growing programs in the health care sector including nursing, pharmacy, social work and physical and occupational therapy, we are exceedingly grateful for the significant work done by these inaugural Hall of Fame inductees. Together, these individuals have built an industry that has changed the lives of Nashvillians, Tennesseans and Americans and led the way for increasing numbers of passionate students who are eager to begin their health care careers.

At Belmont, we believe in integrity, inquiry, collaboration, service and humility. Upholding these core values, we work diligently to engage our students in creative ways so that upon graduation they are equipped to find the intersections where their knowledge, abilities and passions can be used to meet the world’s needs. McWhorter Scholars

GRATEFUL TO PURSUE HEALTH CARE CAREERS Belmont’s health sciences are supported by the McWhorter Society, a Giving Society named in honor of Clayton McWhorter, providing financial support for innovative educational resources and endowed scholarships including the McWhorter Scholars Program. Dollars raised by the Society and Hall of Fame provide scholarships for qualified students pursuing careers in the health care industry through degrees in nursing, social work, occupational and physical therapy, pharmacy and business. Each year, high achieving and deserving students who show potential and a unique passion for health care are chosen.

Jessica Brinkley, pharmacy resident at Saint Thomas West and May 2015 graduate of Belmont’s College of Pharmacy, decided to attend Belmont for pharmacy school because her personal commitment to service matched the values of the University. Brinkley’s time at Belmont allowed her to be involved in her community while pursuing an education.

Passionate about working with underserved populations, Brinkley said she is grateful for the opportunities provided to her by the McWhorter Scholarship program.

As one of the first six McWhorter Scholars selected, Brinkley said the opportunity has had a huge impact on her career, success and education. “Mr. Clayton McWhorter and the McWhorter Scholars program provided me with the confidence and reassurance that I needed to leverage my advancement as a pharmacist,” Brinkley said. “My hope is that I will have opportunities to serve others and give back throughout my pharmacy career.”

Pharmacist at Saint Thomas Midtown and recent graduate of Belmont’s Healthcare MBA program Roland Achenjang chose to pursue his MBA at Belmont because he was interested in learning in a collaborative environment among other health care professionals.

Passionate about the utilization of technology to improve patient care, Achenjang said the opportunity to receive funds as a McWhorter Scholar only further motivated him towards developing the passions he has come to love.

“I was and am still honored to have been selected as a McWhorter Scholar, and I understand the program to be an investment in my abilities to impact patient care wherever I am,” Achenjang said. “To me, the impact has been motivational. Mr. Clayton McWhorter believed in me enough to support the pursuit of my goals, and in turn, I must work hard to make sure he perceives my impact as a powerful, worthwhile and rewarding investment of his time and resources.”

The McWhorter Society, named in honor of Nashville businessman, health care leader and Health Care Hall of Fame inaugural inductee Clayton McWhorter, is a Belmont University giving society that supports the University’s health sciences through financial provision for endowed scholarships, professorships and innovative educational efforts. Through the commitment of the Society’s members, Belmont’s health sciences programs continue to retain and advance their leadership roles while engaging the complex educational challenges of modern health care reform.

The Society directly supports students through its funding of the McWhorter Scholars, a scholarship program that assists students interested in pursuing health care careers through Belmont’s Gordon E. Known across Nashville and beyond as a dedicated physician and scientist, Dr. David Satcher has devoted his career to advocating for the health and safety of all Americans by tackling issues not previously addressed nationally including obesity, health disparities among minority populations and mental illness. Satcher served as President and CEO for Meharry Medical College where he oversaw the merger of Hubbard Hospital and Metro Nashville Hospital, changing the provision of health care for Nashville’s underserved populations. During his tenure as president of Meharry, he also led the plan for academic renewal which included a national fundraising campaign and the rebuilding of faculty.

Dr. Satcher would then go on to serve as Director of the Center of Disease Control, the 16th Surgeon General of the United States and the 10th Assistant Secretary for Health in the Department of Health and Human Services.

Throughout his career, Dr. Satcher has received a number of top awards including the Ronald Davis Special Recognition Award from the American College of Preventative Medicine, the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Award for Humanitarian Contributions to the Health of Humankind from the National Foundation of Infectious Diseases and Nashvillian and Tennessean of the Year. Satcher also received more than 50 honorary degrees from universities and colleges including Emory University, Harvard University and Georgetown University, among others. Dr. Satcher, his wife Nola and their four children have been active in the Nashville community as he served as a deacon at First Baptist Capitol Hill Church and taught youth in Sunday School.

Committed to making public health work for all people, Dr. Satcher believes in the power of strong leadership saying “ethical leaders are needed who will take on the problems of poverty, racism and lack of access to health care.”

inaugural inductee  JACK C. MASSEY 

Beginning his career as a pharmacist and small business owner, Jack C. Massey was born in Georgia, attended college in Florida and eventually relocated to Tennessee to build a career steeped in health care, business and investment. After selling his chain of six drugstores, Massey founded Massey Surgical Supply Company in the 1930s and supplied area hospitals and doctors with medical equipment. In the 1940s, Nashville’s Protestant Hospital was experiencing significant financial challenges that would likely end in the facility’s closure.

Understanding the importance of the hospital in this area, Massey became the principal behind its development to the Tennessee Baptist Convention and in 1948, the hospital was renamed Mid State Baptist Hospital.

During his successful career, Massey entered the food industry as owner of Kentucky Fried Chicken. He served on Baptist Hospital's board as it became the largest hospital in Middle Tennessee in 1968 and with Thomas Frist, Jr. and Thomas Frist, Sr., co-founded HCA an organization that would become the country’s largest for-profit owner and operator of hospitals.

Passionate about his work and contributions to society, Massey’s career was built on the belief that operations, convenience and service can always be improved. Throughout his years of success, he was quick to comment on the joy he found from learning and accomplishing those improvements. “Lots of people have more than I do, but not many have as much fun. The fun is in the accomplishing.”

His desire to share his ideals and perspective with future generations led to his deep commitment to Belmont University. That commitment includes helping build a nationally recognized business school, now known as the Jack C. Massey College of Business.

A lifelong entrepreneur and businessman, savvy investor and devoted philanthropist, Jack C. Massey is an inaugural inductee of the Tennessee Health Care Hall of Fame.

inaugural inductee  MILDRED STAHLMAN, M.D. 

The mother of modern neonatology, Dr. Mildred Stahlman is a native Tennessean and long-time Vanderbilt student, educator, researcher and physician. Graduating from Ward-Belmont College for Women, she matriculated to Vanderbilt University in 1943.

Dr. Stahlman then graduated with honors from the Vanderbilt School of Medicine in 1946 as one of only four women in a class of 50. She completed internships in Cleveland and Boston, a residency year in Chicago and was a research fellow in Sweden, ultimately leading to a 60+ year career at Vanderbilt University and Medical Center.

Throughout her time as an instructor, professor and practitioner of pediatrics and neonatology, Dr. Stahlman had more than 150 peer-reviewed publications and assisted in the training of more than 80 post-doctoral fellows from approximately 20 countries. But Dr. “Millie” Stahlman did more than train fellows—she welcomed them into her log cabin home for holidays and to her farm where they rode horses, swam in the creek and became part of her extended family.

During her career, Dr. Stahlman revolutionized the care of high-risk newborns by creating the world’s first modern neonatal intensive care unit in 1961 and was later asked to be the godmother of the first infant she helped save. She also promoted the (then) novel concept of regionalized neonatal critical care and helped establish the first Angel Transport Mobile Intensive Care Unit.

Her tireless work was recognized in 1987 by the American Academy of Pediatrics with the Virginia Apgar Award and in 1996 by American Pediatric Society’s John Howland Award, a designation given to leaders whose contributions have advanced the lives of children and the profession. She was also named Vanderbilt Medical Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumna in 2002 and the University’s Distinguished Alumna in 2004. A newsletter from the institution quoted Dr. Stahlman saying, “Medicine is more than a profession—it is my calling.”

inaugural inductee  THOMAS F. FRIST, SR., M.D. 

A native of Meridian, Mississippi, Dr. Thomas F. Frist, Sr. attended the University of Mississippi, where he started a transportation company that eventually employed 17 other students, the first evidence of his entrepreneurial spirit. But Dr. Frist’s passion lay in caring for people, shaped from his early experiences working as an orderly at Meridian’s local hospital. Dr. Frist studied medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and completed his residency at the University of Iowa.

In 1935, Dr. Frist opened a medical practice in Nashville. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps as the chief of medical services for a 1,000-bed hospital. Discharged as a major at the war’s end, Dr. Frist returned to his Nashville medical practice. In 1957, he was appointed to the American Medical Association Committee on Aging, and subsequently established the Tennessee Commission on Aging. During this time, Dr. Frist envisioned creating a hospital where patients came first and where funding was not dependent upon government sources. This dream led to Park View Hospital with several other medical professionals and businessmen. The success of Park View served as the seed of inspiration for Dr. Frist, Sr., his son Dr. Frist, Jr. and friend Jack C. Massey to form Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) in 1968.

Dr. Frist served as Chief Medical Officer and Chairman of the Board for HCA. He was also a board member of Nashville City Bank and the HEW Advisory Committee on Older Americans and Vice Chairman of the American Retirement Corporation. Dr. Frist is the namesake for the HCA’s Frist Humanitarian Award. One of Dr. Frist’s most important contributions to HCA was its patient-first culture. He believed that if the company focused on giving quality care, the bottom line would take care of itself. That emphasis on patient care permeated every decision he made while leading HCA and is the centerpiece of the company’s culture today.

inaugural inductee  THOMAS F. FRIST, JR., M.D. 

A Nashville native, Dr. Thomas “Tommy” Frist, Jr. is a graduate of Nashville’s Montgomery Bell Academy and Vanderbilt University. An entrepreneur at heart, Dr. Frist created a collegiate advertising company and earned his pilot license while at Vanderbilt University. In 1965, he graduated from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and then returned to Vanderbilt University for his surgical residency.

His residency was interrupted by a two-year term as a flight surgeon at Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, Georgia during the Vietnam War. While in the military, Dr. Frist had an idea for a company that would bring hospitals together to share resources. In 1968, Dr. Frist, his father Dr. Thomas F. Frist, Sr. and Jack C. Massey formed Hospital Corporation of America (HCA). As one of the nation’s first investor-owned hospital companies, HCA modernized the way health care was delivered in the United States while keeping patient care and safety first. Dr. Frist served HCA in various leadership roles including President, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman. He remained on the Board of Directors of HCA until 2009 and currently serves as Chairman Emeritus.

Philanthropy has always been an important part of Dr. Frist’s life. His board activities have included The Frist Center, Harvard Business School Board of Dean’s Advisors, Montgomery Bell Academy, Nashville Health Care Council, United Way—both the national board and United Way of Nashville— and Vanderbilt University, among others. Dr. Frist also has been the recipient of a number of awards, including United Way’s “Lifetime Achievement Award” and the Nashville Business Journal’s “Best in Business Lifetime Achievement Award.”

Dr. Frist is quick to credit his success to his wife, Patricia (Trish), for her support and encouragement throughout the years. She kept Dr. Frist grounded on their first priority—their three children—while he helped build HCA into the company it is today.

A dedicated businessman, lifelong philanthropist and devoted father and grandfather, Thomas F. Frist, Jr., M.D. is an inaugural inductee of the Tennessee Health Care Hall of Fame.

BUILDING A MEDICAL MECCA How Tennessee Grew into a National Health Care Leader

Renowned for its musical legacy, it is Tennessee’s health care heritage that really keeps the economy humming along.

Led by Thomas Frist, Sr., M.D., Jack Massey and Thomas Frist, Jr., M.D.—three of this year’s inaugural Hall of Fame inductees— the trio created a management company in 1968 to oversee operations at Park View Hospital in Nashville. It didn’t take long before HCA expanded its scope of hospitals to take advantage of economies of scale, thereby becoming one of the country’s first hospital companies. Before the year was out, two other hospital companies­ — General Care Corp. and Hospital Affiliates International—were founded in Middle Tennessee.

Listed among the state’s largest industries alongside auto manufacturing and energy, the big tent that encompasses health care includes a broad array of endeavors ranging from entrepreneurial start-ups to corporations on the Fortune 500 list. While the health care services sector takes center stage, what makes Tennessee so unique is the depth and breadth of health care businesses that occur all across the state, from life sciences, research and education to pharma and device manufacturing, population health management and worldclass delivery networks.

Throughout the United States and beyond, the names of Tennessee health care companies are instantly recognizable.

DeRoyal, HCA, Acadia, GTx, Community Health Systems, Unum, NHC, Provectus, AmSurg, LifePoint Health, Brookdale, Wright Medical and TeamHealth are just a few of the industry titans headquartered here. Add to that a robust research climate that takes discovery from bench to bedside, and it’s easy to see why Tennessee’s health care industry is on the national and international radar.

ALL BOATS RISE While Tennessee had already built a reputation for educating the next generation of physicians and was rapidly expanding the amount of research emanating from academic institutions, many point to the founding of Hospital Corporation of America in the 1960s as the tipping point for establishing the state as a health care hub.

Where Tennessee’s story differs from others is the executive teams were welcoming of newer entrants, and ultimately, the early ‘big three’ became a training ground for future industry leaders.

By necessity, the hospital companies also became innovators as their execs forged new ground while trying to navigate what was then a fledgling industry sector.

From friendly competition to corporate spinouts, a large number of companies headquartered in Middle Tennessee trace their roots back to HCA, General Care Corp. or HAI. The ‘all boats rise’ approach wasn’t limited to hospital management, however.

The Nashville Health Care Council Family Tree stunningly depicts the industry’s interconnected nature and highlights the collegial atmosphere that still permeates the health care climate.

INDUSTRY INDICATORS While health care is now the largest employer in Middle Tennessee, the industry indicators are equally robust in other parts of the state. In Chattanooga, three of the

city’s top five employers are in the health care industry. In West Tennessee, Baptist Memorial Health Care accounts for more than 21,000 jobs on its own.

According to the Tennessee Department of Economic & Community Development, the state ranks second in the nation in exports of medical equipment and supplies. In 2013, those exports totaled $3.6 billion— representing a 36 percent jump in three years making Tennessee the national growth leader for this sector of industry exports.

Similarly, Shelby County is the second largest orthopedic device manufacturing center in the nation and home to numerous corporate and regional headquarters for industry leaders including Medtronic, Smith & Nephew and Wright Medical.

With the number of available resources, it isn’t surprising Tennessee ranks among the top states in the nation for the number of active clinical trials. Researchers based here were awarded more than $456 million in NIH funding in 2013. In addition, there are more than 560 research, testing and medical laboratories across the state with research institutions investing $2.7 billion in R&D, according to a 2014 Tennessee ECD white paper.

There are more than 1,500 life science businesses across Tennessee accounting for 49,000 jobs. Health care research and development resources literally span the state from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Biomass Innovation Park and the ETSU Innovation lab to the east—to Vanderbilt University and Cumberland Emerging Technologies Life Sciences Center in Middle

While research is a major economic driver, the real reward has much less to do with income than outcomes and the return on investment is impressive. When the late entertainer Danny Thomas—another 2015 Hall of Fame inductee—founded St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in 1962, the survival rate for acute lymphoblastic leukemia was 4 percent—today it’s well over 90 percent. Researchers across the state are adding to the body of knowledge to significantly impact our basic understanding of disease states and new mechanisms to treat them.

 ERNEST W. GOODPASTURE, M.D. 

Born in 1886 near Clarksville, Ernest Goodpasture was a Tennessee native and 1907 graduate of Vanderbilt University. After obtaining his B.A., Dr. Goodpasture attended Johns Hopkins Medical School and served as a faculty member at Johns Hopkins and Harvard Medical Schools. In 1924, he was invited to join the new Vanderbilt Medical School as the Department of Pathology’s first Chairman. He spent the majority of his career in Tennessee at Vanderbilt before taking the position of Scientific Director of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in 1955.

While at Vanderbilt Medial School, Dr. Goodpasture served as Associate Dean and Dean, but his passions were research and teaching. His scientific accomplishments led to his recognition as one of the world’s foremost pathologists. His interest in infectious agents and viruses led to the development of the chick embryo technique used for the cultivation and study of a number of viruses. This work provided the foundation for the successful development and improvement of vaccines against yellow fever, typhus and influenza, saving thousands of lives.

In recognition of his scientific work, Dr. Goodpasture received honorary degrees from Yale, the University of Chicago and Washington University. He was elected as a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Philosophical Society, among others. He was awarded the Association of American Physicians’ Kober Award, the American Public Health Association’s Sedgwick Medal, the Association of Pathologists’ Gold Headed Cane and was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine.

Though presented with offers from other prestigious medical schools across the country, Dr. Goodpasture chose to stay in Tennessee and devoted his career and life to research and the education of hundreds of medical students at Vanderbilt University.

A decorated pathologist, passionate educator and dedicated public servant, Dr. Ernest Goodpasture is an inaugural inductee of the Tennessee Health Care Hall of Fame.

Creating a career as both a health care clinician and businessman, R. Clayton McWhorter began making an impact on the health care industry as a pharmacist after obtaining his B.S. in pharmacy from Samford University. Upon noticing the expansion of services he could provide patients by moving into the business side of health care, McWhorter became a hospital administrator, honing his leadership and management skills. Years later, McWhorter would go on to become President, Chairman and CEO of HealthTrust, Inc., Chairman and Chief Operating Officer of HCA and most recently, Founder and Chairman Emeritus of Clayton Associates, a firm created to invest in and advise health care entrepreneurs in the health care industry.

Committed to philanthropy and his community, McWhorter and his family have greatly contributed to education in Nashville and beyond through the creation of the McWhorter School of Pharmacy at Samford and Belmont’s McWhorter Hall and McWhorter Society.

Throughout his career, McWhorter has also been involved with a number of community organizations including the American Cancer Society, the YWCA and the Middle TN Council – Boy Scouts of America, among others. He has also received many awards in recognition of his service including the United Way’s Tocqueville Award and the Joe Kraft Humanitarian Award.

McWhorter has mentored countless leaders throughout his career and continues to offer his four guiding principles to all mentees saying, “Be prepared. Find a mentor and be a mentor. Act like an owner. Give back.”

inaugural inductee  DANNY THOMAS 

A radio, film and television entertainer and producer, Danny Thomas was born in Michigan in 1912 after his parents immigrated to America from Lebanon. Thomas began his career working in radio and eventually branched out to film and television. As a struggling actor working towards his big break, Thomas made a vow to St. Jude, patron saint of hopeless causes, saying, “Give me a sign that I am going in the right direction and someday I’ll build a shrine in your name." He never forgot that promise. After finding success, Thomas founded St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a groundbreaking research and treatment hospital devoted to curing catastrophic diseases in children.

The hospital opened in 1962 in Memphis, Tennessee. In the ensuing half century, St. Jude has treated children from all 50 states and all over the world and continues to lead the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. To this day, the hospital stands by Thomas’s founding promises that no family pays St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food and that St. Jude freely shares its discoveries and continues to impact the lives of children across the world. Thomas is quoted as saying, “No child should die in the dawn of life.”

Throughout his life, Thomas was recognized with many awards including receiving a Knight Commander of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre by Pope Paul VI, the Congressional Gold Medal, induction in the Television Hall of Fame and a posthumous receipt of the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award.

A committed humanitarian, celebrated entertainer and lifelong health care advocate, Danny Thomas is an inaugural inductee in the Tennessee Health Care Hall of Fame.

McWhorter Society Founding Chairman  CHARLES R. F. TREADWAY, M.D., MBA 

The late Dr. Richard Treadway, founding chairman of the McWhorter Society at Belmont University, graduated from Vanderbilt University and the Vanderbilt School of Medicine and completed a psychiatry residency at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He also received his MBA from Belmont’s Jack C. Massey Graduate School of Business and served as a longtime member of The Massey Graduate School’s Board of Advisors.

In 1996, Dr. Treadway co-founded Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. and served as its chairman until 2000. In 1998, along with Clayton McWhorter, he founded Medical Properties of America, Inc., a medical real estate corporation.

During his successful career, Dr. Treadway was appointed Commissioner of Mental Health for Tennessee by Governor Winfield Dunn and served as Commissioner under Governor Lamar Alexander. Additionally, he served as Chairman of the Tennessee State Health Planning and Resources Development Authority, Medical Director of HCA’s Parthenon Pavilion and Vice President for psychiatric operations of the Tennessee division of HCA. Dr. Treadway also served as a clinical associate for the National Institute of Mental Health and was appointed to the National Advisory Mental Health Council by President Nixon.

Along with his academic and business accomplishments, Dr. Treadway was a dedicated philanthropist. He was among the founders of the Canby Robinson Society that honors and encourages financial support for Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He also served in numerous board positions including Cumberland Heights Foundation and the Metropolitan Hospital Authority. In 2012, Dr. Treadway was instrumental in founding Belmont’s McWhorter Society which supports the institution’s health sciences through providing scholarships and program support. Dr. Treadway was also the driving force behind the creation of the Tennessee Health Care Hall of Fame.

Susan Dentzer is Senior Policy Adviser to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and is one of the nation’s most respected health care journalists and thought leaders. She is an on-air analyst for PBS NewsHour and a regular commentator on health policy for National Public Radio.

Dentzer served from 2008–2013 as the Editor-in-Chief of Health Affairs, the nation’s leading journal of health policy. She also led the PBS NewsHour’s health unit, reporting extensively on-air about health care reform debates.
