Choose your best and most recent works and include a diverse range of media. Portfolio submissions are accepted throughout the school year, but the priority deadline to be considered for the Leu Art Scholarship is December 1, 2013. PROJECT RECLAMATION: CURATED BY MARY MARGARET SPARKS This exhibition uses visual art as an educational tool to spread awareness about mountaintop removal and its impacts on Appalachia by featuring thirteen artists from Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio.

FROM PIT TO PEDESTAL: THE ART OF JULIE WARREN CONN Kentucky-based stone sculptor Julie Warren Conn allows the natural shape of the stone to intuitively guide her tools. Alongside the hand-sculpted works, she presents cast-bronze works and sand blasted granite bas-relief drawings.

Everyone’s wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them and serve as a warning to all.

Join the Belmont faculty chamber ensemble in the intimate setting of the Belmont Mansion this fall as they explore and intertwine the works of the most celebrated composers as well as lesser known figures.

THROUGH THE EYES OF OTHERS – CREATIVITY AND STRUGGLE The opening program examines the works of three composers whose creativity was limited by totalitarian governments and whose artistic expression was shaped by political circumstances. Czech Erwin Schulhoff, a communist of Jewish heritage, died in a concentration camp. Events in Soviet Russia traumatized Dmitri Shostakovich. Bright Sheng came of age during China’s Cultural Revolution.

THE THREE B’S German composers Bach, Beethoven and Brahms represent the musical high point of their times. Bach brought the Baroque Era to a close with a flourish of genius unparalleled in music.

Beethoven overwhelmed the forms of the Classical Era and became the foundation of a new style: Romanticism. Brahms took the Romantic ideal and brought it to a new level of expression and craftsmanship. All three composers are considered to be on the short list of greatest composers.
