This season promises to be one not to be missed. On the men’s side, the defending regular season OVC Champions return a veteran team, filled with talent across the board. The program has its sights set on capturing another conference championship en route to returning to the NCAA Tournament. Multiple preseason top-25 polls, including ESPN, have already listed the Bruins in their rankings.

On Feb. 1, 2021, Belmont University named Dr. L. Gregory Jones, longtime dean of Duke Divinity School, as its next president, effective June 1. Dr. Jones is married to the Rev. Dr. Susan Pendleton Jones, Belmont’s new First Lady, who has served as a campus minister, a local church pastor and as a senior administrator at Duke Divinity School.

I am writing this the day after the Belmont women’s basketball team upset Gonzaga in the NCAA tournament, and I am struck by how many people with no direct ties to Belmont have contacted me to celebrate that victory.

Belmont has a remarkable trajectory across its athletic programs, and men’s and women’s basketball lead in their visibility and success. If we look at the impressive trajectory that Gonzaga has had over the past two decades in men’s basketball, culminating in this year’s NCAA men’s tournament where it is the tournament favorite and has been ranked #1 all season, Belmont has similar potential for success and visibility in the future. I look forward to working with AD Scott Corley, the coaches, the student-athletes and the entire athletics program to strengthen this vital component of Belmont’s mission.

WHAT DO YOU SE E AS SOME OF TH E LARGE R I SS UE S CO LLEGE AT H LE T I CS WILL FACE IN THE NEXT FIVE-TEN YE ARS? These are turbulent times in

higher education and college athletics especially. I would highlight the changing role of media in covering sports as well as providing funding for them, questions about paying student-athletes (including especially for the use of their likenesses), and gender equity across athletic programs as among the most important issues facing college athletics. We will deal with all of these issues in ways that are shaped by Belmont’s larger mission and vision: with character and integrity and excellence in aspiration as well as execution.

CROCKETT CENTER FOR ATHLETIC On June 1, 2021, Belmont’s Men’s Basketball, Women’s Basketball, Volleyball and Tennis programs moved into the state-of-the-art “Crockett Center for Athletic Excellence,” a 45,000 square foot athletics

The facility marks the first athletics exclusive facility constructed on Belmont’s campus in nearly 20 years.

Student-athletes have quickly made the facility a second home. New practice courts, expanded strength and conditioning space, locker rooms, team rooms, office space, meeting spaces and a video review room have provided Belmont’s student-athlete with a level of resources not previously experience by Belmont Athletics.

In no way would I want to relive any part of this past year, but I am also trying to find some of the positives. This year has allowed Sports Medicine to build and foster relationships on campus and I have met even more of the great people that work at Belmont.

out in my mind. One of my first years at Belmont we had a women’s basketball athlete that was experiencing very odd allergic reactions, and nothing seemed to make sense about when they occurred or the trigger for these events. With the help of the team physician at that time, we were able to figure out what

I work through my check list the week before a game, confirm those details leading up to the game and then re-confirm the details the day before a game.

As games are live events, there will always be things that pop up during a game. after many years in the operations world, I can usually adapt pretty quickly to any issue that comes up.

our offices were located in Striplin Gym. Coach Byrd, Coach Whitten, Coach Cross and the athletic department secretary had offices in Striplin Gym. Coach Cross’s office also served as the ticket office on game day. We have come a long way since 1990. I had dual work duties. I was Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach and also worked in the Office of Student Services as the Intramural Director. The AD/Dean of Students, Ken Sidwell, had an office in Fidelity Hall. Our Cross Country coach worked in Admissions. You knew everyone on campus. I guess we probably had a total of less than 100 studentathletes. Now we are around 275.

It verified the decision to move the program to the Division I level. It was probably the most stressful Belmont game I have watched in person. 2. 2020 – When Tyler Scanlon made the gamewinning layup against Murray State in the OVC Championship. 3. Belmont Baseball’s back to back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2011 and 2012 and earning the department’s first NCAA Tournament win in 2011. 4. 2019 -Men’s Basketball earning their first NCAA Tournament at-large berth and then getting their first NCAA win versus Temple. 5. Coach Byrd’s 800th win and later when we named the court after him. He is such a great mentor for myself and everyone in Athletics.

The Athlete Mentorship Program (AMP) helps initiate and develop relationships between Belmont student-athletes and professionals from a wide array of industries in the Nashville area. These connections provide the studentathlete with guidance and direction in areas such as personal goals, career development, networking and future employment opportunities. Additionally, AMP offers personal development that will assist student-athletes as they transition to life after Belmont. The hope for AMP participants is that the connection between the mentor and mentee will grow and develop into a longterm professional relationship.
