Welcome to the Utah city that is 3rd largest in land mass, but has still retained it’s small town charm; that’s Hurricane.

Here, you can play on three of the most beautiful golf courses in the west, feel the famous red sand between your toes, and find yourself experiencing a taste of the small town life when you drive your ATV down Main Street to gas up before hitting the trails. You can hike with views that over look spectacular vistas, where you will see (or enjoy for yourself!) lots of horseback riding, mountain biking, and walking. We have two beautiful fresh water lakes, which are a favorite for boating, kayaking, paddle boarding, playing on wave runners, or fishing for the big catch.

It is a dream destination, but we like to call it home. It is where we work, raise our families and recreate. It is a culture

of good friendly neighbors, hard working people, and visitors on vacation. It’s the pleasant mild weather that attracts the snow birds in the winter, and the hot desert sun brings the crowds in the summer to camp, fish, and play in the water.

In the heart of Hurricane valley, you’ll find the historical ‘Hurricane Canal’, that brought the liquid gold, life blood to the valley; water. Within 30 miles of Hurricane we have: Zion National Park, and 5 state parks: Snow Canyon, Red Cliffs, Sand Hollow, Quail Lake, and Oak Grove. Hurricane has so much to offer, but the people are my favorite part. Welcome to my dream come true lifestyle, and down home country living all in one.

Leeds

Leeds rests at the foothills of the Dixie National Forest, with stunning views of Zions and Pine Valley Mountain. Located just 15-minutes North of downtown St. George, Leeds has a slightly higher elevation, delivering more pleasant temperatures in the Summer. We are the home to several fascinating historical destinations; The Silver Reef Museum, one of two locations on earth where silver was found in sandstone, and the Civilian Conservation Corps Camp, which housed many young men during the Great Depression, funded by the New Deal, to help rebuild the forests of the Southwest.

unit full service campground at Sand Hollow, with cement pads, tables, cabanas, grill/ fire pit and flush toilets and showers. The roads and parking are asphalt. Unregistered OHVs are not allowed to drive in and out of this campground.

Sandpit Campground has 6 sites with power and water, 19 dry sites and five group sites. Roads are gravel and each site has a table and fire pit. Some group sites have cabanas. There are flush restrooms and showers next to the OHV riding area.

Primitive Camping is available along the South and East shore. **Reservations: Reserve Westside and Sandpit Campgrounds on Reserve America.

On-site concessions provide rentals, food, equipment and diving equipment. Summer Hours are 6:00 am - 10:00 pm. Winter hours are 7:00 am - 9:00 pm.

EVENTS GUIDE Hurricane Valley is home to dozens of events each year, many of which are highlighted elsewhere in this Visitors’ Guide.

The purpose of this section is to highlight a few events that have not yet been highlighted, and to provide a rough month-

by-month calendar of annual events, so that visitors and locals can plan ahead and take advantage of the wonderful events and activities available in this area.

BAM DOG SPECTACULAR

HUNTSMAN WORLD SENIOR GAMES

This is an annual event held in September at the Hurricane Community Center, dedicated to bringing people and their dogs together. Come out and enjoy the annual Walk for the Animals, Fungility demonstrations, multiple competitions, instruction on care for canines, and lots of kid-friendly activities. Get to know other dog-owners in the area and let your dogs make new friends too. There is something for everyone at this dog-centric festival.

The Huntsman World Senior Games is the largest annual multi-sport event in the world for athletes age 50 and better.

Dubbed the “premier senior athletic event in the world,” the event, which began in 1987, takes place each October and welcomes more than 11,000 athletes from all around the world. Sports venues are throughout St. George / Hurricane and surrounding areas. With 30+ different sports to choose from, including archery, golf, cycling, badminton, pickleball, bowling, shooting, softball and swimming, there is something for everyone. CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL

Bring the entire family to a weekend full of holiday activities sure to fill you with the magic of the holiday season.

Hurricane Valley’s annual Christmas Tree Festival is held in early December at the Hurricane Community Center, at 63 South 100 West. The festival includes up to 50 decorated trees available for sale and auction, plus craft vendors, a holiday quilt display, a gigantic bake sale and continuous entertainment throughout the festival. Santa will also be there so don’t miss out. Proceeds are donated to benefit the “Shop with a Cop” program. PARADE OF HOMES

The St. George Area Parade of Homes is an annual ~10-day event held each February. As the largest parade in the State, it draws people from across Utah and many others from out of state. Each year, participants are free to self-tour 20+ luxury custom homes across Washington County, each displaying the unique and innovative touch of the designer. HURRICANE MOUNTAIN BIKE FESTIVAL

Riding bikes and having fun is what this festival is all about.

In addition to cycling activities, there are live bands, a beer garden, Western Style Contests (practice your roping and barrel riding), Dutch oven dinner, lots of rad prizes and a chance to ride the industry’s best demo bikes. HURRICANE VALLEY CHAMBER ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT Come test your skills against other area players at the HV Chamber charity golf tournament. Held at the beautiful Sky Mountain Golf Course in August or September, this event is a fun-filled day of food, prizes, golf, and great company, all at a reasonable price. The winning team is awarded the “Spilsbury Cup.” This is an event you don’t want to miss.

RED ROCK BBQ FESTIVAL

RED BULL RAMPAGE

This Fall event is the most anticipated mountain biking event of its kind. During this event, held in Virgin, Utah (between Hurricane Valley and Zion National Park), elite riders put everything on the line as they ride down a high-risk mountain trail. SEMI-ANNUAL COMMUNITY THEATER

Enjoy a musical theater show each Spring and Fall in Hurricane’s beautiful Fine Arts Center, with affordable admission and high-quality entertainment. Shows for 2022 are The SpongeBob Musical from April 1st-30th and Little Mermaid (October-November).

25 HOURS IN FROG HOLLOW

This Fall event is the longest one-day off road cycling race in the world, as it takes advantage of the extra hour received due to the end of Daylight Savings. In this unique event, characterized by riders’ costumes and unique team names, mountain bikers complete a 13-mile loop as many times as possible in 25 hours.

Riders report that this event truly feeds their soul, both with the beauty of single track riding and the festive atmosphere.

LOVE WHERE YOU LIVE The local litter cleanup movement (Love Where You Live) started gaining momentum with a simple social media post.

The original Facebook post

by Raine Christensen said: “I think we’re giving off the wrong impression to the millions of people who come visit our beautiful State and City… it sure looks like we don’t care about our community and that we let it get trashed like crazy.

How can we enjoy our beautiful area when many times we’re surrounded by so much trash? How do we solve this problem?

I’m open to any and every idea. Yes, there are many of us trying, but we feel outnumbered!”

This post resonated with thousands as it went viral locally.

They began rallying under one voice and their message was clear — the amount of litter in our community was NOT ok!

The best part was the additional response from Washington County, St George City, local businesses, and other community members as they started getting organized and figuring out what more could be done. It wasn’t long before a name was chosen for this movement: “Love Where you Live, Keep UT Litter Free”.

Raine, who found himself as the nominated president of this movement, has been picking up litter with his kids since they were just toddlers. They

made a game out of it and would do special trips to just pick up litter. As his kids grew older, that excitement and energy remained!

This is where Raine got excited — he knew that everyone WANTS to make a difference.

Many others have joined forces with Raine and are continually working to keep our area beautiful!!

Love Where You Live Utah is working to take this movement to the next level through education, sponsorships, and cleanup projects!

The bottom line is this: Whenever people come together, GOOD things happen. Whenever a community comes together POWERFUL things happen… and they happen fast.

RUNNER’S PARADISE Running is a way of life in Hurricane Valley. In the early mornings and evenings, runners can be seen all over the City, especially along the country roads [Drivers are encouraged to be very cautious]. IRONMAN 70.3 Southern Utah hosts the Ironman 70.3 North American Pro Championship on the first Saturday of May each year. The event consists of a 1.2 mile swim, a 56 mile bike ride and a 13.1 mile run (totaling 70.3 miles). THE HUNTSMAN WORLD SENIOR GAMES: A PLACE TO CHASE DREAMS St. George, Utah - Since its inception, the Huntsman World Senior Games has been a place to chase dreams.

For more than three decades the Games has provided a venue where with enough patience, hard work and dedication athletes can be amazing. That opportunity is part of what has helped the annual event to grow into the largest event of its kind in the world for athletes age 50 and better. The Games take place each October in St. George, Utah, and are open to athletes of all skill levels.

In 2021, the Games anticipate welcoming a record number of participants, more than 11,000, to Southern Utah.

All 50 of the United States will be represented and athletes from around the world will take the playing field, competing in 35 different sports over a twoweek period.

Each athlete brings his or her own story and measure of inspiration, but perhaps none more than Linda Cohn from Northridge, California. Linda didn’t begin her track and field career until she was 50 years old. She’d always watched the Olympic Games every four years, and like many wondered “What if…” Family and other responsibilities prevented her from chasing down that dream initially. In her 40s she heard about the Huntsman World Senior Games and the year she turned 50, she decided to give the javelin a try. Her first event didn’t bring a gold medal but instead an overwhelming feeling

of emotion as she stood on the javelin runway for her inaugural attempt. That day she knew that she had found her passion and she has never looked back. Today, Cohn is a world record holder, posting a distance of 37.22 meters in the women’s 65+ age group. She will compete once again this year alongside thousands of other dream chasers and try to better her best.

“The Games is a total experience,” says Kyle M Case, Games CEO. “We know that athletes can play their sports at home, so when they come to the Games we want to give them something special. Whether you are competing or not, there is something exhilarating about the World Senior Games. We want our athletes to feel that exhilaration and we want the community to as well.

These competitors show us all what it takes to work for our dreams. Our invitation to the residents of Washington County is to come and celebrate that with us.”

On the first Tuesday of the event, the Games will officially welcome the athletes to the community at the opening ceremonies. Following the tradition of the Olympics, the ceremonies feature a parade of athletes, singing and dancing, and a huge fireworks display. This free and family-friendly event takes place at Trailblazer Stadium at Dixie State University. It’s a high-energy show that is free to the public.

FASTEST GROWING SPORT IN AMERICA The game with a funny-sounding name is the fastest growing sport in America﹘even during a pandemic. When you discover pickleball, you find friends, a sport the whole family can play, and great exercise. For old and young alike, it’s a fun way to get out and start a new hobby.

Many people feel like they can have some degree of success in pickleball as soon as their first day. Pickleball player Lindsey Sullivan said, “I was totally hooked after a few hours of playing. It’s a sport anyone can pick up and doesn’t require a large group to play.” While you can play as soon as you try, the rules seem tricky at first and there is a lot of strategy involved.

But don’t worry﹘”If you like to socialize, network, exercise, compete, have fun, or just meet new friends, you qualify” to play, according to pickleball enthusiast Larry Christensen.

What makes pickleball so unique, addicting, and fun? It’s a sport that brings people from all walks of life, from different sports or no sports at all, to a place where they can compete in a friendly atmosphere. Games are short, points can be intense﹘and who doesn’t love to hit that plastic ball hard for the putaway? It’s a healthy option for aging people﹘it’s not hard on the body. Sullivan said, “I keep playing because I love the friendships and the little bit of competition each week. It’s so fun to keep learning and playing with all skill levels. It’s such a great way to be active at any age. I look forward to playing as long as I can move.”

Many have found it a great hobby when they retire! They can play for hours and still feel great. Claudia Empey said, “Pickleball is so much fun and such a wonderful way to get exercise. I forget it’s even a workout.”

People love learning how to improve and become a skilled, competitive player! Places like the City of St. George,

Hurricane City, and Summit Athletic Club offer leagues, classes, clinics, lessons, and tournaments to help you learn and give you different opportunities to play. There are many courts throughout Washington County. You may even know a friend who has one in their backyard! There is a lot of “open play” when people show up at courts in the morning to mix, mingle, and play. There are also leagues, which offer set-up play for your skill level. Leagues fill up fast these days at Summit Athletic Club and through the City of St. George. They are a fun way to meet people and get competitive games at the same time. Empey, a league player at Summit Athletic Club, said, “The people in the league are all the kindest people you could meet!”

Private lessons, clinics, and classes are also available if you want to improve your game.

I have loved all the people I have met through pickleball﹘people I otherwise wouldn’t have met! I had mentors helping me get ready for tournaments, friends I drill and compete with, and people who have discovered the fun sport and participate in the classes and leagues I host. All were known as pickleball players; all have become friends! Pickleball provides such a great atmosphere for friendship, exercise, and competition all in one. “So,” says Christensen, “get addicted and join the rest of us in town. Above all, exercise and have fun, because life is all about loving, living, and laughing, and pickleball will give you all of that.”

Jessica Stout has played competitive pickleball nationwide for the last four years. Her wins include singles championships at Nationals and the U.S. Open. She is a certified teaching pro at Summit Athletic Club, providing classes, clinics, leagues, private lessons, and tournaments for all ages.

GREATER ZION WELCOMES BACK IRONMAN On the heels of the prestigious IRONMAN® 70.3® World Championship held in St. George in September 2021, IRONMAN announced that it is bringing its 2021 IRONMAN World championship event, traditionally held in Kona, Hawaii, to St. George on May 7, 2022.

The IRONMAN World Championship is the longest-running and most distinguished endurance event in the world, but due to Covid-19 restrictions in its home state, the culminating experience in IRONMAN’s full-distance triathlon (140.6 miles) circuit has not happened since 2019.

“We are fortunate to have built such a strong and trusted relationship with our friends in the greater St. George region over the past 10-plus years,” said Andrew Messick, President & Chief Executive Officer for The IRONMAN Group. “St. George stepped up to ensure IRONMAN athletes will have a 2021 world championship, even if delayed into 2022.

“The honor to host the first IRONMAN World Championship outside of Hawaii is as humbling as it is glorious,” said Kevin Lewis, Director of the Greater Zion Convention & Tourism Office.

“There are few events that hold the prestige and respect of Kona. To be chosen as the destination with the capacity and character to host this event takes my breath away.”

Paul Huddle, Senior Regional Director for The IRONMAN Group said: “With the longstanding history the events have built over the years here in Southwest Utah … we know our athletes will be excited to once again race 140.6 miles across this breathtaking and challenging course in the Southwestern United States for the first time since 2012.”

The IRONMAN World Championship will begin by taking athletes along a 2.4-mile two-loop swim at Sand Hollow Reservoir.

Then a 112-mile bike course will take athletes through Snow Canyon followed by the 26.2-mile run through Red Cliffs Reserve before finishing in the historic Town Square of downtown St. George.

The IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship will also return to Greater Zion in October 2022 for a two-day event followed by events continuing through 2024. QUAIL CREEK RESERVOIR

Just 10 minutes from St. George and 40 minutes from Zion National Park, is a secluded, local gem called Quail Creek Reservoir, inside Quail Creek State Park. One of two outstanding recreational lakes in Hurricane, Quail Creek’s unique geology is spectacular in the morning light, which reveals clear, calm waters, while setting sunlight showers the west-facing cliffs and hills in a predictable tangerine luminescence. Views of Pine Valley Mountain, Zion National Park, regional (extinct) volcanoes, and Arizona’s northern peaks may all be seen from inside Quail Creek State Park.

Gate and park hours vary, based on time of year, so call or check online before traveling. Day-use parking fees range from $15-20 per vehicle, with senior and annual pass pricing available.

There are tables and benches (available at no additional charge) throughout the shoreline between the two boat ramps, as well as a group campsite/pavilion, and a day-use picnic pavilion that may be reserved through the park. Overnight campers will find well-groomed sites with tables and clean common restrooms. Drinking water is available from hydrants dispersed throughout the grounds. Restrooms with running water are in the campsite, near the day-use pavilion, and by the north boat ramp parking area. Reservations are recommended.

A vast array of activities lure recreational enthusiasts of all types. Swimmers love the wakeless zones, where motorized vehicles must slow to just a few miles per hour. Anglers lure rainbow trout, largemouth bass, smallmouth, crappie, bluegill, and bullhead catfish to their buckets (some prefer catch-andrelease over fish tacos). Kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and canoeing are great ways to explore the varied shoreline at

a slower, more engaged pace as they probe limestone coves and cliffs and float the cottonwood tree-lined creek from early Spring to mid-Summer. Bring your own paddle craft or rent on site. Guided paddling, SUP yoga, petroglyph hiking, and fishing tours are available by appointment.

Motorized boating is easy with two boat ramps. Wakeboard, wake surf, water ski. Bring your own or take advantage of the on-site jet ski and boat rental options, with availability and hours varying by season.

Mountain biking and hiking trails ring the lake. There are over 25 miles of trail that ring Quail Creek State Park ranging from beginner to intermediate in difficulty level. Quail Creek State Park was built alongside an ancient Native American trailway.

A free interpretive trail inside the park, near the north ramparea rental office, displays several authentic examples of native rock art, some as old as 5,000 years. Take pictures, and don’t touch the art; oils from hands deteriorate the rock and art.

Birders will find a full complement of duck, goose, cormorant, tern, avocet, stilt, sandpiper, great blue heron, night heron, osprey, bald eagle, great horned owl, golden eagle, California gull, Franklin’s gull, white-faced ibis, yellow warbler, hummingbird, American pelican, and many more species.

Observation areas on the west side are easy to access by car, while those looking for a more intimate experience may choose to paddle or boat to the far side of the lake.

One of Hurricane’s outdoor gems, Quail Creek Reservoir does not disappoint.

SAND HOLLOW RESERVOIR

A Visit to our State Parks!

Hurricane Valley is home to Quail Creek State Park Lake and Sand Hollow State Parks. Our waters are fairly warm-they never freeze over!! Quail Creek lures boaters and anglers year-round. Folks also come to enjoy Camping, Hiking Biking, fishing, and ATV adventures.

Quail Creek reservoir was completed in 1985 to provide irrigation and culinary water to the St. George area. Most of the water in the reservoir comes from the Virgin River. Two dams form the reservoir. The main dam is an earth-fill embankment dam. The south dam is a compacted concrete dam.

Quail Creek reaches a maximum depth of 120 feet and is stocked with rainbow trout, bullhead catfish, and crappie.

Scoot on over to Sand Hollow State Park and you will find beautiful rock formations all around the reservoir and a large rock outcrop not far offshore where you can pull in your kayak and climb up the rocks for incredible views. Or you can Boat, fish, and dive at Sand Hollow Reservoir, explore and ride the dunes of Sand Mountain on an off-highway vehicle, then RV or tent camp in a campground or the beach.

Sand Hollow is also a man-made body of water created in 2002. The reservoir sits at an elevation of 3,000 feet and has a maximum depth of ninety-five feet. If you are a diver, you

might find some surprising items including a toilet, Cessna 320 twin-engine airplane, an air tank that looks like a bomb with fins welded on the side, as well as a 26-foot Renell Cruiser boat that was sunk during a search and rescue practice drill.

Be sure to visit one or both of our State Parks and be prepared for lots of fun!!

GETTING OUT INTO THE MIDDLE OF THE BEAUTY YO U R 5 - P O I NT G U I D E TO R E NTI N G P OW E R S P O R T S Point #1: Plan, plan and plan and be willing to readjust!

Tiny disasters will happen. It is a matter of how you handle them that makes all the difference in the world. If you work with the companies that are renting versus not being flexible at all, your life, and the life of all involved will be much better.

Confirmations of rental reservations will help cut down any scheduling issues. Make sure to call ahead to 1st make the reservation, 2nd a week before confirming, and lastly the day before going out ask all remaining questions as well as one last confirmation.

This will ensure you will just show up, check out, and go have a blast. Don’t be that group that goes somewhere amazing and then sees something they think would be amazing and fun, only to find out that it has been sold out for months. Plan ahead. Keep in mind that the insurance you purchase usually covers the machine for the company and not yourself. Damages are still billed to the customer for their negligence while operating the rental. So that wonderful statement of “drive it like you stole it or drive it like it’s a rental” does not usually apply to Powersports.

When sand dunes are in play, plan on getting stuck and doing a little digging.

Point #2: Not everyone will have fun or get to drive!

Be aware that rental companies do charge a premium if they operate near major attractions like National Parks and State Parks. This will usually make it not very cost-effective for everyone to get a machine of their own. Young adults might feel they get ripped off with not being able to drive, however, consider the financial consequences of their lack of experience.

Insurance companies usually put an age limitation on rentals so make sure to ask.

Point #3: Bring cash for tipping!

The tourist and travel industry requires the generosity of those

going on vacation to help pay their bills. Remember they are the locals with all the knowledge. Tipping tour guides has been a staple with rental companies. They make sure that you are safe and taken care of while in areas you have never seen before. They will also have the information to give you great backstories of the areas you are going to see. Make sure to return the favor with a little cash on hand for them. A tour guide who has been taken care of will go out of his/her way to show you even the spots they don’t normally show others.

You know the locals-only spots!

Point #4: Be Democratic and Vote!

Communication and Diplomacy are key to helping you have fun. We all have that one person in the group that loves a good list and itinerary.

That planner who thinks of everything. They are your biggest ally and your biggest pain in the ass on the trip. So like it or not communication is key.

Make sure to vote and go with the masses of what people want to see and do. Lastly, realize that you can’t please everyone.

Point #5: Disconnect from Technology and Have fun!

It is imperative to disconnect from all electronics while on vacation. Personal experience has told me that if you do this then you will have 24 hours of hell with the kids but eventually, they will lift their heads out of their phones and start looking at their surroundings. This is also super important for adults to disconnect from work and be present in the moment. When out on the trails or at the lake if you are focused on work or emails then you will miss out on some of the most beautiful scenery on earth.

BIKE THE HILLS Southern Utah is home to some of the world’s best mountain biking and the area around Hurricane contains some trails that could be considered “crown jewels.” There are options from beginner rides like More Cowbell, which pretty much anyone can ride and enjoy, to the Red Bull Rampage sites that only about one percent of riders are talented or brave enough to attempt.

Most of Hurricane’s riding sits atop the Hurricane Cliffs, east of town, and are accessed by either highway nine or fiftynine, with one of my all-time favorites, J.E.M. (named for the original builders: Johnny, Ellen, and Michael) connecting both highways-which opens up options for differing loops depending on your mood. In the beginning, J.E.M. was just one trail but has become a network, with the aforementioned More Cowbell as the easy bit (or a great add-on to a longer ride) and a large loop consisting of J.E.M., Hurricane Rim, and Goulds Rim. There are also Goose Bumps and Cryptobionic which add a variety of distance and terrain options.

Then, there are the mesas. Southwest Utah sits at the convergence of the Mojave Desert and the Colorado Plateau region, and the mountain bikers of Hurricane have fully embraced the unique character of riding on mesas. Comprised mostly of sandstone, mesa riding offers challenges that you just don’t get on regular dirt trails. In fact, on sandstone (slickrock) you often aren’t even on a trail—you just ride across expanses of rock, following cairns or paint dots. The terrain is punchy, with quick sprinty climbs and technical turns and descents.

There is a skill set to be learned for those who don’t ride slickrock in their neck of the woods, but with perseverance and practice, this type of riding can be very fun and fulfilling.

For those who want a taste of mesa riding without the “jumping into the deep-end” feel of Gooseberry or Little Creek mesas, Wire Mesa offers a mellower intro. With a bit more dirt trail and less technical slickrock problems, it lends itself to folks just getting started in this type of riding. Never fear, Wire is still a very fun ride (even for seasoned riders) and has as much beauty as any trail in Hurricane. With Zion National Park as part of the backdrop, how can you go wrong?

The cat is certainly out of the bag when it comes to riding mountain bikes in Southern Utah. Working at Bicycles Unlimited in St. George, I’ve met people who have come from all over the globe to ride Gooseberry Mesa. Hurricane offers a variety of very fun trails that are a quick trip out of town but will make you feel like you’ve entered another world. Beautiful views, adventure, challenges, and a big dose of fun—mountain biking in Hurricane has it all.

MILES AND MILES OF TRAILS Hiking you say. What can you say about hiking in Southern Utah. Like most people in Southern Utah I am not a natural citizen of Washington County. I actually moved here from California, but I also lived in Chicago, New York, Mississippi, Minnesota, Texas, Pennsylvania, Florida, and have traveled to every state in the union and probably 50 other countries. I have probably hiked every place I have been, just ask my wife. I call hiking a passion of mine, my wife calls it addiction. So who cares you say, well I just want to give you some perspective validity to my words “Southern Utah Is One Of the Best places in the World to Hike”.

How could that be you ask. So hang on here we go.

Southern Utah has some of the most diverse hiking environment in one area I have ever seen.

I can start in my backyard in SunRiver and hike the Ranger Bart Trail all the way to Arizona. Hiking along the Virgin River watching the hawks and eagles above looking for an easy meal. Lizards and the occasional rattle snake always add some adventure. There are also the Indian Pits which are over 1,000 years old.

On the Northern part of St George is one of the most beautiful state parks in all of Utah. Snow Canyon. With the petrified dunes, hidden piñon trail, Volcanic Tubes, and the great trail from Tuacahn through Padre Canyon. And the ever popular Chuckwalla Trail where you can almost always spot a tortoise in the spring. And there is always the wonderful red and white rock formations. Sometimes with a few daring climbers.

To the east is Fort Pierce Wash area with a special place called the dinosaur tracks. From here you can hike up the wall and eventually through the sand to a seldom seen arch called Nelson’s Arch. Discovered and named in the 90’s by a local hiker named Larry Nelson. I think I knew him well.

Even further east is the famous Zion National Park. The park has 100’s of miles of diverse trails from Coal Pits to Cable Mountain. You will hike for miles without seeing another hiker, but enjoy the wonderful views of the Zion Peaks. Of

course there are the famous ones like Angels Landing and Observation Point, but much too popular and always crowded.

Even further North is the Pine Valley Mountain area, which isn’t actually a mountain. Pine Valley is actually a Laccolith, which was he source of the Volcanic rock formations all around St George. The tallest peak you can see from St George is Signal Peak at over 10,000 ft. In summer this will always be our southern Utah hiking area in the wonderful pines and much cooler temperatures. The area is full of deer, squirrels, Marmots, and chipmunks.

And to top of this wonderful area an extended trip will bring you to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. More wonderful views and hiking. It may actually be in Arizona, but we consider this as part of our Southern Utah Hiking.

So you can see why I love hiking here, Enjoy hiking and I will see you on the trail.

Hiking In Southern Utah Enough about the area now give me a specific hike I can do near Hurricane since this is suppose to be about Hurricane.

There is only one hike that sticks out unless you want to climb up a cider cone or to the top of Mollies Nipple. These are real challenges because of the loose volcanic rock. Two steps forward and one step back. Always good hikes, but not for the faint of heart. Gould’s Wash via Three Falls Trail is always a favorite short hike through the gorge of Gould Wash. The trail head is at the end of South 60 East and can be reached off 400 south. It is a 2.1 mile lightly traveled out and back hike that passes three falls, but as in much of Southern Utah the falls only have water during a rain. The trail is primarily a mix of some dirt and some scrambling. This trail is one for just wondering through a beautiful gorge and passing through some wonderful canyon walls and enjoying the journey.

ZION NATIONAL PARK Southern Utah’s Zion National Park is one of the premier national parks in the world, welcoming millions of visitors each year from all over the globe. Zion National Park’s canyons and mesas boast an exquisite beauty that draws more and more visitors each year. With 220 square miles of explorable land, there is something for everyone. Zion National Park features short, mid-range and 1-2 day hikes, including some hikes requiring rappelling and swimming. It also features biking trails, horseback riding, and numerous rappelling and canyoneering options. Zion National Park’s 2,000-foot sandstone cliffs are world renowned for their large wall climbs (not recommended for inexperienced climbers).

Bucket list hikes include Angel’s Landing, the “Narrows” and the “Subway”, among others. For a hike with breathtaking views and vistas, consider the West Rim Trail, which includes Angel’s Landing along the trail. Emerald Pools, Weeping Rock and the Riverside Walk (gateway to the Narrows) are some of the most popular shorter hikes. Another popular short hike, which involves a memorable drive through the famous Zion-Mt. Carmel tunnel, is the Zion Canyon Overlook Trail.

Those hiking in slot-canyon areas need to exercise extreme caution to avoid flash floods, which are most common in the monsoon season (July to September). Ideal times to visit the park are in the Spring and Fall, when weather is moderate and crowds are smaller. While visiting Zion, Hurricane Valley, which is approximately half an hour outside of the park, is an excellent option for food and lodging.

LOCAL HIKING While there are many world-class hiking options in Utah’s several State and National Parks, there are many excellent lesser-known hiking trails in the Hurricane Valley area. Here is a brief description of a few of them.

Mollies Nipple For the best view of Hurricane Valley, the Mollies Nipple Trail is a must. Plan for a good workout as the trail rises 1250 feet in a one-mile stretch. Located at the Southeast corner of the Rainbow Canyon subdivision, near the Hurricane Airport.

For more info, see stillexploring.com/mollies-nipple/ BS Trail The BS Trail offers beautiful views of Hurricane Valley, with less vertical climb than the Mollies Nipple Trail. Located at the far west end of the 2050 South cul-de-sac in Hurricane.

Sheep’s Bridge Trail The Sheep’s Bridge Trail follows the Virgin River Gorge with spectacular scenery of the river. The trailhead is located just west of Sheep’s Bridge in Virgin, Utah, on Sheep Bridge Road.

Canal Trail If you would like to experience Hurricane Valley history while you hike, the Canal Trail is just for you. As you hike, overlooking the beautiful Virgin River Gorge, plaques explain the miracle of the canal that turned a dry desert into beautiful Hurricane Valley. Jem Trail Jem Trail is a maze of world-class mountain biking trails designated for hiking too. Located just east of Hurricane on highway 59.

Confluence Park Tucked between La Verkin and Hurricane, at the bottom of a rocky gorge close to the Virgin River bridge, this hike combines scenic beauty with history and biology. THREE FALLS CANYON Story and Photos by Phillip Moore

Along the hike, you will see structures associated with the Hurricane Canal. These include remains of the old canal, a tunnel, an iron pipe, and the remnants of a bridge that crossed the wash at the mouth of the canyon.

The first settlers of Hurricane worked long and hard to bring Virgin River water to the valley. There would be no city of Hurricane without their sacrifice. You can learn more about their accomplishments at the museum in the center of town.

The walls of Three Falls Canyon are the same formations that form the rim of the Grand Canyon, the Kaibab Limestone and Toroweap Formation.

Along the way, you will pass cave-like grottos formed from the dissolving of the limestone by water. These grottos are unfortunately marred by paintballs.

The Hurricane area has many splendid hikes and points of interest. Within a very short drive, you can be out exploring nature. It’s a great place to visit or live. One of these fascinating places is Three Falls Canyon.

The trailhead is easily found by driving down Main Street, past the Main Street Café to 400 South. The road rises a bit at the junction. Turn left at 400 South, then a quick right at 60 East, the very next road. Proceed down 60 East to the very end. The last 100 yards or so is a graded dirt road.

A sign at the trailhead displays three options, depending on your time and fitness. The canyon is plainly visible, to the left.

The hike begins on a dirt trail, then you will pick your way over cobbles and boulders in the wash. Use caution to avoid turning an ankle or tripping.

You will notice a thick layer of black rock topping the cliff on the right-hand side of the mouth of the canyon. This is a lava rock type called basalt. It was molten lava about 380,000 years ago and it flowed to this place from a volcano located across the Hurricane Valley. The lava filled the bottom of the wash, then cooled and hardened here. Later, movements along the Hurricane Fault moved the lava flow upwards in relation to the valley floor, leaving it perched up on the cliff.

You are actually walking through the Hurricane Fault Zone, a large normal fault that can be traced to the south and across the Grand Canyon. The fractures produced by the fault movements provided pathways for water to erode this canyon. This stream channel is called Gould’s Wash and only has flowing water after heavy rains. It is amazing that such a small, semi-permanent stream could erode and produce a large and deep canyon-like this.

This is a view of the main falls area and the end of the short hike. You can continue by scrambling up and over to the left and see the second falls up close, or make it a longer hike up the wash to the third falls. The choice is yours…enjoy your adventure.

LOCAL FISHING REPORT Summer is here and people are hitting the backroads to enjoy the great outdoors around our region including fishing. Here is a sampling of fishing reports from the Division of Wildlife Resources for a few of the local fishing holes popular with locals and visitors alike.

The Fish Utah website offers an in-depth, interactive map with updated fishing conditions, detailed location maps, and other information for public fisheries open throughout the state. Check it out at https://wildlife.utah. gov/fishing.

Enterprise Reservoirs: Due to severe drought conditions, water users anticipate Lower Enterprise Reservoir will be drained by late summer, while the upper reservoir will reach its conservation pool very early. In response, emergency changes to daily limits at both reservoirs have been made as follows: 8 trout and 12 Bass. These changes are in effect until October 31, 2021. All other established regulations remain in place.

Boat launching conditions are unknown at the upper reservoir - small boats may be able to launch, but larger boats should probably go elsewhere.

Gunlock Reservoir: Due to severe drought conditions, water users anticipate Gunlock Reservoir will be mostly drained by late summer. In response, emergency changes to daily limits have been made as follows: 12 largemouth bass (no size restrictions) and no limit for bluegill or black crappie. These changes are in effect until October 31, 2021. Bass fishing is reported as good to excellent. Bluegill should also be active.

Kolob Reservoir: The reservoir is accessible from both the north and south. The road across the mountain to the north is in rough shape and the water level is low. DWR’s recent netting

surveys found that rainbow and tiger trout are abundant. Many of those fish measure 10-14 inches, though there are some larger fish up to 16 inches. There is also a handful of cutthroat and brook trout. Bait fishing opened on May 15.

Panguitch Lake: Rainbow trout fishing is good to excellent from shore and boat.

Anglers are finding good luck with various techniques and tackle. Fishing pressure is high on weekends. DWR’s recent netting surveys confirmed that rainbow trout are abundant in three size classes: 9-10 inches (stocked last fall), 13-14 inches, and 16-18 inches. DWR also found good numbers of tiger trout up to 10 pounds. All fish are healthy and feeding well.

Quail Creek Reservoir: Rainbow trout remain active and provide fair to good fishing from shore, tubes, and boats. Anglers are finding success with a variety of lures, flies, and baits. Largemouth Bass have moved up to the shallows on warm, sunny days looking for warmer water.

Newcastle Reservoir: The water level is low, but boat launching is still possible. The water temperature is near 70 degrees. Fishing is fair to good for fat rainbow trout. Fly anglers have done well with streamers and midge patterns.

Trolling and bait fishing are also producing. Wipers have started to get active - a few have been caught on crankbaits and jigs. Target wipers at dawn and dusk during and near the full moon phase. Smallmouth bass are also active.

Sand Hollow Reservoir: Largemouth bass has moved up to the shallows and are active on warm, sunny days.

PAMPERING YOURSELF, IT’S FUN! Southern Utah Skincare 101

Congratulations on making it to Southern Utah, to experience some of the world’s most stunning scenery and adventures.

Whether it’s a hike, an ATV trip, or mountain biking across world-class trails, we hope you’re having an amazing time!

While Southern Utah offers world-class adventure and fun, it can also challenge the body, especially given the dry climate.

With Utah being the second driest state in the nation, there are several things you’ll want to do to have the best time possible.

Water, water, water. If you haven’t already noticed it yet, your body needs plenty of water. Unless you’ve come from a dry climate similar to Southern Utah, you’re likely going to need to drink more water than you’re used to. The Mayo Clinic suggests about 15 cups of fluids a day for adult men and 11 cups of fluids for adult women. This can obviously vary based on weight, exercise level, overall health, and other factors such as pregnancy or breastfeeding. In any case, pay attention to your body and avoid caffeine as it can mask your body’s need for water. The desert is very dry so you’ll want to drink before you feel thirsty to feel your best.

With an average of 310 days of sunshine each year, it’s critical to protect your skin with sunscreen. With a daily max UV that can range well into very high levels, it’s important to use at least an SPF 30 rated sunscreen. With many of the activities in Southern Utah involving sweating or swimming, it’s important

to reapply the sunscreen every couple of hours.

After you’ve had some fun on the trail or lake, the final step in making the most of your time in Southern Utah is to help your skin recover. Given all the dry air, dust, dirt, sun, sweat, lotions, and grime that your face has been exposed to, it is important to clean and treat your face as soon as possible to avoid further damage and/or developing blemishes. The solution? Treat yourself to a number of facials that can be tailored to your skin to clean it, hydrate it, and leave it feeling better than when you began your vacation. These facials range from chemical peels to HydraFacials to more advanced treatments using RF micro-needle, laser, and other technologies and techniques. If you’ve never experienced a HydraFacial, you will be amazed at its ability to clean, treat, and hydrate your face, leaving you feeling refreshed and your skin glowing.
