One of the strong areas of focus of our firm is context based design. In our conviction it is not so much about what we want as architects or urban planners but what the place asks or requires to become a stronger part of the whole. This basic philosophy guides our work when making urban plans but also when designing a piece of furniture. Very often as an architect you have little influence on the list of requirements and also the location where a project or intervention is being realized. Basically these two ingredients are a given, and to you the humble task to match these. In the case of a hospital, and definitely in this assignment with a very strong list of requirements prepared by USONA the rough

outlines of the shape and logistic organization within this shape are nearly a given. We were obliged to work with proven technology, not only for materials and installations but also for the logistic organization of the design. Thus our task was much more how to fit this design in its surroundings than creating a shape in which the list of requirements could fit. We have often used the analogy with the engine of a car, this is engineered to perform in particular way notwithstanding the design of the car in which it is placed. In our opinion our assignment is to fit the “engine” in the best way possible in its surroundings.

EGM architects, our counterpart, gave us the basic building blocks for the design. They could prove that these blocks, placed in a certain relation to each other, worked very well in a hospital they designed which had a similar list of requirements. This was a strong prerequisite of USONA. The building blocks consist of a long block, the so called “hot floor” with all the high level medical functions (as the operating room and the intensive care) and two U-shaped blocks with the wards. In between these blocks a common space (the atrium) was needed, where the none medical functions could be realized such as the restaurant, the little store, the quite room, but also the patient registration.

- Design is based on “Trias Energetica” - Optimising maintenance costs - Taking local circumstances into account (materials and climate) - Cooling by wind - Solar boilers - Minimize sunlight by shading - Good airtightness of the facade in relation to limiting moisture penetration - For “deep” cooling in relation to water balance twin coil in the air conditioning unit provided for warming up supply air by heat exchange with return air - Energy-saving lighting - Energy-saving cooling machines
