.S. Construction Machinery New Orders in 2019 were down 7.5% compared to the previous year. However, a rise in the residential construction sector could increase demand for construction machinery in the first half of 2020. U.S. Farm Machinery and Equipment Supplies were slightly lower than 2018, and declining exports could keep this sector on the back side of the business cycle through mid-year.

Europe Agriculture Machinery Production in 2019 declined 5.3% from 2018. ack Trucks announced on January 30 it will start producing a new medium-duty truck series, the Mack MD. In addition, the company is making a $13 million investment to establish its Roanoke Valley Operations (RVO), a new manufacturing facility in Roanoke Valley, VA, for the production of the Mack MD Series. The project will result in the creation of up to 250 new jobs once the

facility is fully up and running.

Company executives and public officials from the region made the announcement at the new facility near Salem, VA. A prototype of the new MD Series was unveiled, as well.

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam said during the event that the area’s workforce is the reason companies like Mack Trucks are coming to region. “We have one of the most talented workforces,” he said. “We need to continue to be able to train our workforce for these 21st century jobs.”

“Mack Trucks is very proud to make this investment and to now offer a full lineup of Class 6 to Class 8 commercial vehicles, serving virtually every segment of the market,” said Martin Weissburg, Mack Trucks President. “With this investment, Mack is well-positioned for future success, and we’re taking orders

Mack’s investment is being used for equipment, tooling and building enhancements in the 280,000 sq. ft.

(26,012.9 sq. m) facility dedicated to the assembly of Mack medium-duty vehicles.

Weissburg noted during the launch event the company was able to quickly get the prototype and testing of the truck completed, as well as the new production facility up and running.

The new Mack MD The Mack MD6, a Class 6 model, has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 25,995 lbs. (11,791.1 kg), while the Class 7 MD7 model has a GVWR of 33,000 lbs.

(14,968.5 kg). Both are exempt from the 12% Federal Excise Tax (FET).

These new truck models are specifically built for medium-duty applications. They are designed for applications requiring dry van/refrigerated, stake/ flatbed, dump and tank truck vocations.

The MD6 model does not require a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) to operate for non-hazardous payloads.

Available in 4x2 configurations, the MD6 and MD7 models feature a sharp wheel cut for enhanced maneuverability for tough urban settings. The MD Series cab design features a short bumper-to-back-of-cab (BBC) measurement of 103 in. (261.6 cm).

Components used in the MD Series are a combination of Mack products and those from other industry suppliers, such as Cummins Inc. and Allison Transmission.

Manufacturers Shifting Gears to Aid Global

Manufacturers in the heavy equipment industry are donating various resources to provide much needed medical supplies for the fight against coronavirus.

s COVID-19—aka the novel coronavirus— continues to alter our daily lives, it has brought about many new challenges to those in the heavy equipment industries. Several companies have had to alter operations or even temporarily shut down.

However, it has also demonstrated the resiliency of our society and the efforts to which people and companies will go to help one another during such a difficult time. Several manufacturers have turned their attention to producing needed supplies for the healthcare industry such as ventilators and personal protective equipment (PPE). For instance, automotive manufacturers such as Ford and GM have shifted their operations to manufacturing face shields and other necessary supplies for medical professionals.

Manufacturers in the heavy equipment industries are lending a hand, as well, whether that be through monetary donations or shifting production capabilities to create medical supplies.

Providing necessary resources Caterpillar Inc.’s philanthropic arm, the Caterpillar Foundation, recently announced it would be committing $8.5 million to support global communities, including underserved populations, who are affected by the virus. According to a company release on the topic, the foundation’s investment will support nonprofit organizations who are working to help prevent, detect and respond to the pandemic; providing resources to hospitals, medical staff and patients; addressing food insecurity; and enabling online STEM and coding education for youth impacted by school closures.

Aerial equipment manufacturer Sinoboom says it is reaching out to cus-

tomers, suppliers, associations and medical institutions to offer face masks and other PPE during the current crisis.

“We know that face masks cannot offer any guarantees of protection, but if people need them, we have them and will happily dispatch them,” said Susan Xu, President of Hunan Sinoboom Intelligent Equipment Co. Ltd. in Changsha, China.

Volkswagen AG announced on March 27 it was releasing employees with medical qualifications for up to 15 working days with full pay if they volunteer for work in the public health service. The target group includes medical practitioners and paramedics of various categories as well as nursing and surgery personnel working at the German facilities of Volkswagen AG. In addition to people working in these areas for Volkswagen, employees with appropriate qualifications who

work as paramedics on a voluntary basis, for example, will also be released if the need arises.

Volkswagen HR Board Member Gunnar Kilian said in the company’s announcement, “Employees in hospitals, surgeries and the emergency services are performing an outstanding service to society as a whole in the fight against corona. They urgently need our full support and solidarity. This also includes personnel support. For this reason, the Board of Management has decided to release our employees with medical qualifications for supporting missions in the public health service in an unbureaucratic way without any loss of income for them.”

The company also made a major donation of about €40 million worth of medical supplies – including face masks, gloves, disinfectants, clinical thermometers, protective goggles and protective clothing – which will be made available to medical personnel providing emergency treatment and care in Germany.

Volkswagen says it has received a growing number of requests for help from hospitals, doctors and social facilities. As Volkswagen itself does not have available the total volume of supplies requested, the goods themselves will be ordered by the health services and Group Procurement, while Group Logistics will coordinate and organize transport.

The top priority is to deliver the equipment to doctors and hospitals as quickly as possible. Distribution will be organized by public bodies.

Mercedes-Benz says its 3D printers are ready to be used to make necessary components for medical technology.

Husco has joined a taskforce in Milwaukee, WI, whose goal is to design and manufacture PPE for healthcare professionals treating patients with COVID-19. Dubbed Milwaukee MaskForce, the taskforce consists of over 25 organizations from the health care, education, first responder, and manufacturing industries. Their goal is to create a reusable, medical-grade N95-style respirator mask.

“It all started when legislation passed approving the use of Industrial N95-style respirators as a way to combat the shortage of PPE,” said Pat Masterson, Vice President of Corporate Manufacturing for Husco, in a company press release. “This caused concern about supplier capacity, as well as the quality of masks that would be available to meet the needs of frontline health care professionals in the short and longer terms.”

The current Industrial N95 respirators, typically found at hardware and home improvement stores, are made

from a lightweight construction and disposed of after limited use. The Milwaukee MaskForce is challenging itself to come up with a reusable design made from plastic or hard rubber that can be manufactured at scale, from hundreds at a time to hundreds of thousands. Currently there are three mask designs being worked on by the taskforce which consists of local health and safety organizations, area universities including Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE), and Milwaukee-based manufacturers such as Husco and Briggs & Stratton.

Siemens has announced it is making its Additive Manufacturing (AM) Network along with its 3D printers available to the global medical community to speed design and production of medical components. The AM Network connects users, designers and 3D-print service providers to enable faster and less complicated production of spare parts for machines like ventilators.

Siemens has also partnered with Aucma to quickly develop a prototype disinfection robot. The electric robot can disinfect up to 36,000 sq. m (387,500.8 sq. ft.) in 1 hour and features a robust chassis that can overcome obstacles and navigate

Since the coronavirus outbreak, there has been an urgent need in many hospitals for disinfection robots that can free people from having to disinfect high-risk areas, leading the companies to collaborate on this machine. It can be adapted for use at various sites; Siemens says as soon as it is launched, the new robot will be put to use not only in hospitals but also in schools, offices, manufacturing sites and other public places to support the resumption of work and production.

Heavy equipment manufacturer JCB is shifting its U.K. operations to produce ventilators, which are in high demand from hospitals treating coronavirus patients. After being shut down for 2 weeks due to the virus, JCB’s Cab Systems factory in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, is restarting production.

But instead of equipment cabs the facility will make special steel housings for a brand-new design of ventilator from Dyson.

A minimum of 10,000 of the JCB housings are earmarked for manufacture once Dyson receives regulatory approval for its design.

Dana Inc. is using 3D printers at its Advanced Manufacturing Center in Maumee, OH, to make parts for face shields.

The company is also procuring other necessary components of the shield, assembling them at its facility and donating the face shields to local hospitals. Working together with other facilities in town which have 3D printers has enabled Dana and its partners to make around 500 face shields a week. The company is looking at ways it can try to ramp up production of this necessary item, as well as make plastic enclosures for ICU patients with coronavirus.

Mercedes-Benz is also utilizing 3D printers to support production of medical equipment. The company says its

printers can help make the individual components urgently needed for medical technology being utilized during this current health crisis. “Our expertise and specialist knowledge is available for production; now it is up to the medical technology sector to contact us.

Our 3D printers are definitely available,” said Jörg Burzer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz AG, Production and Supply Chain, in a company announcement.

Electronics component manufacturer Visual Communications Company (VCC) has established a Crisis ColLAB Initiative through which it is looking to partner with medical manufacturers to help combat COVID-19. The company is offering expertise in engineering design, 3D printing capabilities and more to help manufacturers quickly create needed supplies and equipment. OEMs and medical equipment providers can complete a form on the company’s website. The VCC team will quickly review the application and formulate an action plan.

Precision Associates Inc. (PAI) recently announced it is ramping up production of several essential rubber components for ventilator manufacturer Ventec Life Systems. Ventec has announced plans to partner with GM to increase the output of these crucial units in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Brad Kadue, President of Precision Associates stated in a company announcement that it “has dedicated engineering, production and tool-making resources to meet the accelerated production timeline.”

Precision Associates also molds parts for other ventilators and diagnostic equipment used in laboratories for COVID-19 testing.

Cummins Inc. is partnering with DuPont to help address the nation’s shortage of N95 respirator masks. Cummins’ NanoNet and NanoForce Media technology, which uses DuPont’s Hybrid Membrane Technology (HMT), can typically be found in air, fuel and lube filtration products

used in heavy-duty diesel engines to prevent long-term engine wear, but also can be used in the N95 respirator masks worn by healthcare professionals to filter harmful airborne particles that can spread COVID-19.

DuPont’s HMT is made using a proprietary spinning process; the hybrid technology materials are comprised of continuous sub-micron fibers. The end result is a “membrane-like” sheet struc-

“Cummins is re-evaluating our supply base and manufacturing capabilities to identify how we can support our healthcare professionals who rely on critical personal protective equipment to do their jobs,” said Amy Davis, Vice President of Cummins Filtration in a company press release. “Our NanoNet Media can fill a key supply void and help address the mask shortage facing the United States and other countries around the world.”

The first mask prototypes using Cummins’ donated media were assembled by University of Minnesota teams in March as part of an initiative to provide masks to M Health Fairview and other Minneapolis-based healthcare systems. As the COVID-19 outbreak escalated, the university realized their supply could run out quickly. To address this challenge, a team of designers, engineers, chemists, surgeons, anesthesiologist and apparel and clothing experts from the University of Minnesota’s Institute for Engineering in Medicine; Medical School; College of Design; College of

Create Smarter Machines The way telematics systems collect and share information will continue to evolve and aid the transition toward more intelligent machine operation and care.

elematics systems continue to grow in importance for the heavy-duty on- and off-highway equipment markets.

More OEMs are now integrating telematics systems as standard on their machines due to the many benefits they can provide.

Today’s telematics systems can collect and transmit a variety of data and is often a key component of helping equipment own-

ers reduce downtime. With the data telematics systems collect and transmit, equipment owners can monitor where their machines are located, how they are working and if there are impending maintenance issues.

In the equipment rental industry, telematics can be used to provide a rental house with utilization numbers as well as keep track of maintenance intervals. All of this can be fed automatically to a rental company’s maintenance system, enabling it to better monitor its equipment. And because the information is coming directly from the machine, accuracy is assured, says Robert Rauhof, OffRoad Business Development Manager at Geotab.

Geotab recently started developing its telematics solutions for the off-road market. Rauhof says the Geotab platform works for everyone from OEMs to end users. The company has several partnerships with OEMs in the heavy-duty on-highway market, and its experience

with that vehicle segment aided Geotab’s move into the off-road space.

Rauhof says Geotab is already working with a few large OEMs in the off-road market, one of which is interested in having the company build its telematics platform. “We’re working with manufacturers in several different ways. We can provide a factory solution for OEMs, as well as a great system for the guys at the end of the line [end users],” he says.

While it’s two different applications, he says you can use the same devices in the platform and get the data you need whether it’s an OEM or an end user utilizing the system.

The fact Geotab’s platform is scalable and easy to use is an attractive aspect for all customers, says Rauhof. “Not to mention, we have the deepest engineering and development bench in the industry, which is also a big factor when you’re dealing with OEMs because things can be a little bit more

Because there is so much variation between each company using Geotab’s telematics system, Rauhof says it’s important to have a wide range of offerings. The company’s device is highly adaptable which makes it easy for a customer to add a number of different services to create a customized solution. Geotab also offers a software development kit to enable customers to customize a solution themselves. “[It] allows you to actually add some customizable things onto your database inside MyGeotab [a web-based fleet management system], so you can really customize the solution to fit your needs.”

Geotab’s GO RUGGED telematics device was developed specifically for the off-road market. It is more ruggedly designed than the one used in on-road applications—as those devices are typically installed in a truck cab which is cleaner than that of a piece of off-road equipment. “The GO RUGGED is sealed

against dirt and moisture penetration.

It has a larger operating temperature range,” explains Rauhof. “You can mount it on the outside of a bulldozer and [begin working].”

The ability of telematics systems to provide machine data in mixed fleets— those with equipment from multiple equipment manufacturers—has been an industry issue for many years.

However, associations like AEMP (Association of Equipment Management Professionals) have been working with manufacturers to create a standard which enables OEMs to keep their IP (intellectual property) while also allowing equipment owners to get data on all of the equipment in their fleet.

Rauhof says its telematics solution utilizes the AEMP standard so fleets

can use one interface for their whole fleet. He notes information from another third-party telematics supplier can be pulled into the Geotab platform, as well. “It’s very open, we play very well in the sandbox with all telematics solutions.”

Data at the component level In addition to equipment manufacturers, Geotab can also provide telematics solutions to component manufacturers. Most recently the company announced its integration with Donaldson Co.’s Filter Minder engine air filtration technology.

fleet management platform. This enables equipment owners to proactively monitor the performance and status of engine air filtration systems across their entire equipment fleet.

“Essentially, we’re making our filters talk,” says Nate Zambon, Director of Filter Minder at Donaldson Co. Most filtration and fluid service is based on time or distance intervals, he says. However, those time intervals may be resulting in unnecessary maintenance. This can cost a fleet a lot of downtime and money. “If you don’t need to service it early, that can really lead to a lot of waste from an expense perspective or may result in accelerated engine wear,” says Zambon. “That’s a big challenge, especially when you get in really harsh, demanding conditions.

People [are sometimes removing] air filters almost daily to blow out or bang them against the tire to clean the filters off. And that’s really causing a lot of damage to the filters [and] is creating a lot of risk for engines.”

On the flip side, he says there are people who want to get the maximum

life out of the oil or a filter and run them well past proper service intervals. This can cause damage and even destroy an engine, as well as reduce fuel economy.

With the Filter Minder technology, wireless sensors create a smart product capable of informing customers when a filter actually needs servicing. This helps minimize downtime and cost for fleets, and ensures their equipment is running at optimal levels.

Zambon says the advantage of its wireless technology is that it is ultra-low energy, and that it has a longer life and lower cost than Bluetooth technology.

The technology can be applied across all of Donaldson’s filtration and fluid monitoring solutions. The initial application is for air filtration, with oil condition and fuel filtration monitoring currently undergoing testing and planned for release later this year. In the future, hydraulic filtration and hydraulic oil condition will also be added to Donaldson’s monitoring portfolio.

grow, so has the need to monitor the components within a battery-powered system. XALT Energy recently partnered with HED Inc. to develop the XALT Battery Viewer (XBV), a telematics system designed to track the performance of battery-electric vehicles.

Using the two companies’ expertise, the system allows fleets to monitor drive cycles, routes and charging times of individual vehicles. Data from the XBV system can also be utilized by XALT to determine the best battery technology for a specific application’s needs in order to optimize performance. It will also help the company with future product development.

and when to transmit them, as well as how to visualize the data in a way that their customers would gain value,” he explains. This is where HED’s CANect Telematics solution was beneficial as its configurability and flexibility enabled the two companies to create a system which met XALT’s needs.

Further implementation of new power sources in off-highway equipment will increase the deployment of telematics systems in these machines,

says Repp. “[It will] provide the market an opportunity to find new and innovative ways to gain value beyond technology validation.” Improving asset logistics on- and off-site, streamlining maintenance based on actual vehicle operation versus hours used, and

improving operator performance and safety are all ways this will be realized.

“These are all achievable with today’s technology but having a driving force (like monitoring new technology) helps prove the value and ultimately the adoption rate,” he says.

and efficient job site. This can also help improve sustainability initiatives which Crayton says more companies are looking at now. Operating in a more efficient manner means less fuel is used and fewer emissions are produced.

Sharing data Telematics systems can collect a lot of valuable data for manufacturers, end customers and other stakeholders.

What to do with all of the data continues to challenge many in the industry, as does sharing data.

“I see that as the brave new frontier,” says Wally Stegall, Technical Fellow and Director at Morey. “How do you do things in a way that protects proprietary information but still shares the legitimate data between all stakeholders that need the data [which] helps move the industry forward and allows everyone to be profitable while still being competitive.

“That’s going to be a hard nut to

crack, but I think it’s easier to do in some ways than people think once people get their head around the idea,” he adds.

A combination of changing mindsets and technology will be necessary to achieve data sharing which will be necessary as equipment and vehicles become more connected and automated. It will also better enable the move toward more real-time prognostics and performance information.

“We’ve got to get to the point of true predictive maintenance,” says Stegall.

Consortiums Standards are being developed which “require telematics at a much greater level and much greater level of sharing information within the vehicle, the fleet operator, the OEM integrator and tier 1 [suppliers],” he says to ensure safety and performance of a vehicle or piece of equipment.

Real-time condition-based maintenance is required to reduce unplanned downtime and costs.

XALT ENERGY

Caterpillar Inc. is one of many engine manufacturers adding more insight into its products. The company is putting technology it uses in other areas of the business into its engines, says Jamaal Crayton, Senior Digital Strategist at Caterpillar Inc. One way it is doing this is bringing all telematics data, no matter the brand, into a single, easy-to-understand dashboard.

Doing so enables equipment owners to quickly access engine diagnostics and be more proactive about upkeep and maintenance.

Caterpillar’s digital services enable customers to access critical engine data from anywhere, and automated insight allows engine owners to be more proactive with their service and maintenance.

These types of solutions fit into its vision for work sites of the future which include connected machines capable of sharing information and working together to make a more productive

Stegall says one way to address the data sharing concerns is with Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) enabled by the SAE ITS Health Ready Components Standard JA 6268 and Consortium. “The JA 6268 Standard for health-ready components is a joint aerospace automotive standard to enable condition-based maintenance and provide a common lexicon at the component and data exchange level via the cloud, leveraging each industry’s existing standards. [It] allows for an abstraction from proprietary knowledge while providing prognostics and performance data,” he explains. “It gives us a way of defining what is truly a health-ready component, system or subsystem and vehicle, a standard lexicon for communicating information that can be reported, and a mechanism for sharing that data back to the OEMs and tier 1 [suppliers] so they can continue the development of the product and provide value-added information.”

He says like the five levels of autonomy defined by SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers), there are SAE defined levels (0-5) of health readiness for performance and maintenance detection, with level 5 being the asset is a rolling service bay providing real-time performance data to operations, enterprise, mission of vehicle, and on-vehicle safety-critical systems. A level 5 Health Ready asset is ready to be a level 5 autonomous piece of equipment from the maintenance perspective.

According to Repp, telematics will continue to become more intelligent over the coming years. He says that currently, telematics is focused on data collection at the machine, transmission of data to the cloud, and aggregation of data to user interfaces or third-party systems for analysis. Although this provides a vast amount of data, sending all data to the cloud is not the most efficient method. “Moving forward we will see an increase in edge computing where computations and decisions are made in real time on-module, on-vehicle,” says Repp. “This will make the on-vehicle experience more intelligent so that only necessary or valuable information is transmitted to the cloud.

“Taking this approach decreases transmission, storage and cloud processing costs, while still providing key information when needed,” he adds.

Edge computing will help the heavy equipment industry evolve in various ways, says Repp. It will provide OEMs and equipment owners with a cost-effective means of truly understanding how their machines are being used in the field which will help define the equipment of the future. Edge computing is also the first step in enabling assisted driving, remote control and eventually fully autonomous operation.

“The future of the industry is based on data insights so the right machines can be built, the right actions can be taken based on status of the machine, and ultimately, improving performance and safety for the jobs these machines perform,” he concludes. |

ase Construction Equipment has been very busy since CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2017. At that time, its big “tease” was a concept dozer/loader combination. But at this year’s show, it proved it wasn’t messing around with a simple concept.

The company has clearly been very busy since the last big event.

Launched at World of Concrete and showcased at CONEXPO was the B Series next-generation compact track loaders and skid steers. The series includes five CTLs and eight skid steers offering radial and vertical lift configurations, numerous horsepower and size ranges and a choice of standard mechanical, mechanical hand-and-foot and electrohydraulic controls.

“The B Series retains the styling of previous Case loaders, yet critical operational systems have been re-engineered for greater performance, and fully integrated with new control and operator interfaces to give contractors a powerful match of productivity, efficiency and convenience,” says George MacIntyre, Product Manager for Compact Equipment at Case. “The completely redesigned B Series operator interface includes new left- and right-hand posts with simple ignition, pushbutton operation, easy throttle control and intuitive switches for all core machine functions.”

Project Minotaur goes into production Given the highly positive response to the Project Minotaur dozer/loader prototype shown at the previous CONEXPO, Case announced early last year that it was in the process of taking this new machine concept to the next level.

After months of testing and customer feedback, along with some design tweaks, the DL550B has emerged as the industry’s first fully integrated compact dozer loader.

“Our goal with this ‘concept’ was to see it through all the way,” MacIntyre states. “The DL550B is here today as the result of the passion and drive of our

engineering, product validation and manufacturing personnel, the real-world operators who spent hundreds of hours running prototypes around the country, as well as the enthusiasm shown by the construction industry in providing feedback to how this machine should perform in the field.”

The DL550B comes with a true dozer-style undercarriage available in steel or rubber track configurations.

Case Universal Machine Control will allow it to be outfitted from the dealer with any of the three major suppliers of grade/machine control technologies.

“We found that the vertical lift pattern helped us achieve both the dozing performance we were looking for while also expanding its ability to serve as a high-capacity CTL,” says MacIntyre. “The vertical lift pattern allows us to reach deeper into trucks, and additional enhancements in machine structure and performance allowed us to increase the rated operating capacity by 1,000 lbs.

The roughly 18,000-lb. (8,164.7 kg) machine operates at 114 hp (85 kW) and offers auxiliary hydraulic options

of up to 40 gpm (151.4 lpm) at 4,100 psi (282.7 bar). It is available with an optional fully integrated ripper and is compatible with a wide range of heavy-duty attachments.

Project Zeus reveals its power Arguably stealing the show at CONEXPO was the unveiling of Project Zeus, an industry-first fully electric backhoe-loader. Designated the 580 EV (Electric Vehicle), it is powered by a 480V, 90 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that can be charged by any 220V/three-phase connection. While applications will vary, each charge will support most common 8-hour workdays.

The battery separately powers the drivetrain and hydraulic motors, resulting in hydraulic breakout forces equal to diesel-powered machines and improved performance during simultaneous loader and drivetrain operation.

“The 580 EV is a significant step forward in our commitment to sustainability, the evolution of earthmoving equipment and truly practical innovation that drives real savings and competitive advantages for backhoe owners,” asserts Leandro Lecheta, Head of Construction Equipment - North America, CNH Industrial.

While perhaps not an immediately obvious choice for battery power, Eric Zieser, Director - Global Compact Equipment Product Line, Case, argues otherwise. “The backhoe loader is perfectly suited for electrification as the varied use cycles, from heavy to light work, provide an excellent opportunity to convert wasted diesel engine hours into zero consumption battery time, yet provide the operator with instantaneous torque response when needed.”

He notes that a diesel engine at low idle has reduced torque and requires time for the engine to ramp up to meet the load demands. “Electric motors, on the other hand, have instantaneous torque and peak torque available at every operating speed,” he adds.

The 580 EV operates with zero

emissions, lowering the total carbon footprint for its owners. Economic benefits can include as much as 90% lower annual service and maintenance costs, substantial fuel savings and the ability to bid certain jobs and obtain incentives otherwise unattainable.

Case sees the 580 EV as particularly well suited for utilities, utility contractors, and government and public works operations, all of which tend to have initiatives aimed at lowering emissions, reducing noise in public areas and finding new ways to work within tight budgets.

To that end, the company announced that two models have already been sold to U.S. utilities. Case indicated it has the capability to produce more units throughout 2020 before ramping up production to meet greater demand in the following years.

Methane model makes North American debut The 580 EV is actually the second major alternative-powered machine Case has introduced in the past 12 months. At bauma 2019, Case made a big splash when it pulled the curtain off of Project TETRA, its methane-powered concept wheel loader. This futuristic-looking machine made its debut in North America at CONEXPO. Project Tetra benefits from the existing research and development program of sister brand New Holland Agriculture in off-road methane usage, with over 7 years of experience and an extensive global testing program.

It uses an FPT Industrial six-cylinder methane engine that delivers maximum power of 230 hp (171.5 kW)—the same as the equivalent diesel engine— and torque up to 1,184 Nm (873.3 ft.-lb.). The engine runs on compressed natural gas (CNG), ensuring 15% less CO2 and 99% less particulate matter than its diesel-based counterpart.

The unit also features a 50% reduction in drive-by noise levels, making it especially suited for municipal applications and for working in noise-sensitive urban and residential areas. |

While the current global health crisis was on the minds of many during the show, it did not hinder the interest of attendees or exhibitors who wanted to learn about the latest industry technologies and trends. Crowds filled the halls of the Las Vegas Convention Center to see new equipment and components.

especially in IFPE, which features many component manufacturers—and for whom the quality of the conversations is of particular importance.

Alternative energy takes center stage Electrification and other alternative power sources continue to grow in the heavy equipment industries. This was apparent during CONEXPO with many manufacturers exhibiting their newest developments in this area.

One of the biggest launches came from CASE Construction Equipment which unveiled on the first day of the show its fully electric backhoe loader known as Project Zeus. The 580 EV backhoe loader is powered by a 480V, 90 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and offers performance equivalent to a diesel machine. Read more about Project Zeus on pg. 28.

Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas introduced several new pieces of equipment during the show including two prototype electric-powered compact excavators—the Hyundai R18E developed exclusively in house, and the R35E which was designed in collaboration with Cummins Inc.

The prototype Hyundai R18E is a two-ton-class machine designed for use both indoors and in urban settings.

Offering power and productivity equivalent to the diesel-powered Hyundai R17Z-9A compact excavator, the R18E is 60% more energy efficient. It is powered by an induction-type motor with 1-hour current rating of 225 amps.

The R18E can operate up to 8 hours on a full charge.

Takeuchi and Avant Techno also showcased electrified machines during the show. Avant Techno’s first fully electric loader, the Avant e5, offers zero

emissions and lower operating costs.

Reduced noise levels from the machine also benefit use in residential areas or within buildings.

Among engine manufacturers at the show, hybrid systems were a key theme. FPT Industrial debuted its F28 Hybrid engine system featuring a diesel engine paired with an e-flywheel.

Caterpillar Inc. also debuted a hybrid engine concept. The Cat C18 hybrid optimizes machine performance by capturing surplus energy via a parallel hybrid system which can re-introduce that energy into a machine when

FPT’s hybrid engine is expected to be available next year.

Perkins engines introduced the next generation of its hybrid-electric engine which now enables an electric motor to be placed at the front of the engine or by the flywheel, offering flexibility for OEMs. DEUTZ and Kubota Engine have continued to develop and exhibit their hybrid engine and alternative power system technologies over the last several years—showing the newest advancements at each of the major industry shows Intermat, bauma and CONEXPO. This year, DEUTZ introduced its 360V drive system which utilizes a split drive comprised of two 40 kW (53.6 hp) electric motors, one of which drives the vehicle while the other powers the hydraulics system. The system was shown on an all-electric JLG telescopic handler concept to demonstrate the ease with which the system can be integrated.

The Kubota V3307 Micro-Hybrid system prototype made its North American debut at CONEXPO. Kubota’s system can be applied to a variety of applications and maintains accessibility to the existing power take-off positions of a conventional engine. The power assist V3307 Micro-Hybrid system supports the engine by delivering an additional electrical power boost of up to 10 kW (13.4 hp).

Kubota also announced its entry into the 300 hp (223.7 kW) engine market with the new S7509 which provides 100% power take-off at the flywheel and fan side. The company says its customers have been wanting engines in this range, and that among its future

Several manufacturers introduced advanced technologies aimed at improving productivity and efficiency for operators. With the SmartGrade system, grading tasks are automated to enable them to be completed faster and with fewer passes. The machine also features DozerMode, a control solution that allows the EH joystick control system to function like a crawler dozer — with the push of a button.

Komatsu introduced its suite of Smart Construction solutions aimed at helping customers control construction planning, management, schedule, costs, and optimize processes remotely and in near real time. The company will offer 11 new solutions which begin rolling out this year and include fleet management and remote data sharing to job sites.

It also debuted the new Komatsu ZT44 track drill which is designed to enhance productivity in challenging terrain. The versatile track drill has the flexibility needed to drill in a variety of settings, from small patterns and uneven ground conditions, as well as multiple angles and even de-watering, if required.

Topcon debuted at the show its Thermal Mapper for

asphalt pavers. The system monitors temperature segregation to ensure accuracy during the paving process. It uses GPS technology and real-time kinematic positioning to guarantee accuracy and allows operators to make adjustments as necessary to fit project needs.

The company also announced the release of new functionalities for its machine control solutions. These include tilt rotator functionality for the Automatic Excavator system, and mobile and bring your own device (BYOD) display options. Advanced tilt rotator functionality will allow Automatic Excavator operators to easily swivel or tilt the bucket with automatic boom control for faster and more efficient excavation.

Caterpillar, for instance, announced the expansion of its Cat Command technology to a broader range of machinery. This includes the launch of a line of remote control and semi-autonomous technologies, ranging from operator-assisted compaction to remote control loading, dozing and excavating operations.

Remote control provides full machine maneuverability from a safe distance when working in potentially hazardous environments. By removing the user from the cab, it also eliminates machine vibration feedback felt by the

generally tight spaces.”

Donaldson announced its Filter Minder technology is now available for on- and off-highway heavy-duty engine applications. The filter monitoring system uses wireless sensors and receivers to send filter performance data to the cloud and provide machine operators with data and analytics on their filter. It prompts filter changes based on filter condition, rather than on scheduled maintenance intervals to ensure optimal filter performance.

Consisting of a bucket of 1/3 to 3-1/2 cu. yd. (0.25-2.68 cu. m) capacity that traveled on a cableway between a mast and an anchorage or a tail tower, it gained acceptance from contractors, engineers and aggregate producers for four main reasons: • it excavated to great depth equally well in dry ground or under water; • it conveyed the spoil over a great distance; • it elevated the spoil to the hopper or spoil bank; • and because one simple machine

This machine was adapted for straightforward earthmoving in the 1920s as the Power Drag Scraper, which used a more efficient crescent-shaped bucket that was simply pulled along the ground to the dumping point, digging as it went, then withdrawn in like fashion. This in turn led to the development of the Scraper Tower Machine, which was designed for long, continuous cuts and fills such as levees. The head and tail towers were mounted on rails, and the bucket was drawn towards the head tower, where it placed the spoil to form the embankment.
