ENG Odysseus Fantasy, a modern, dreamlike musical poem recounting the epic story of Ulysses, echoes the ancient songs of Homer’s Odyssey. Each piece is conceived as a painting illustrating in a sonorous and impressionistic way certain characters of this legend, their feelings and states of mind, against the backdrop of omnipresent deities and their power over mortal destinies and terrestrial elements.

These musical pictures depict Ulysses’ cunning with Cyclops, his journey on the seas propelled by the bag of Aeolus, his relationship with Circe, that with Calypso and these seven years against a backdrop of immortality. Then there is the episode in which the hero is bound to the mast of his ship listening to the bewitching song of the Sirens on their morbid island, the dreams of Penelope weaving and undoing her web, revenge and reunion when he returned to Ithaca.

Odysseus Fantasy, beyond its instrumentation, is a sort of orchestral Aoidos singing episodes of Homer’s work, and opening a fantasy world that everyone can make their own through these musical representations of myth. The combination of chromatic harmonica, jazz trio, string orchestra and harp offers a wide range of modern orchestral colours, and places an instrument popularly associated with blues, rock, jazz and country in a unique soundscape, whilst paying tribute to one of the greatest masterpieces of literature and ancient music. This new creation aims to mix genres, arts and eras to create an original work on a subject several thousand years old.

Karim Maurice is a French pianist, composer and arranger who works in a wide field of musical aesthetics, whether for classical orchestras or in the field of jazz and contemporary music. As an international performer, he embraces different scenes as both sideman and leader. His personal projects are focussed on a strong artistic diversity, promoting dialogue and exchange by abolishing musical borders.

Born in 1976 in Grenoble, Karim Maurice followed a dual training in classical and jazz at the conservatories of Grenoble and Chambéry before obtaining in 2003 the First Prize for Writing and Orchestration at the Conservatoire National Supérieur Musique et Danse de Lyon. His Karim Maurice Project, with a repertoire combining string quartet and jazz quintet writing, was named Revelation 2008 at the Jazz Festival of Ramatuelle. In 2013 he won the SACEM Autoproduction Award as well as a partnership with Francophonie Diffusion. He was also

rewarded for this project at the international Made in New York Jazz Competition in 2015 by a jury comprising Joe Lovano, Randy Brecker and Lenny White, winning Best Composer and Second Prize overall.

In 2016, he won a fellowship at the French American Jazz Exchange (FAJE) Foundation for Odysseus Fantasy, in partnership with Will Galison and the string orchestra La Camerata.

Since 2017 he has been managing the European collective LeBocal, with which he created in 2018 “The Horla” after Guy de Maupassant’s short novel. In January 2018, he released on Odradek Records the album Koum Tara with the group of the same name, a unique blend of Algerian chaâbi, jazz and classical music including string quartet. The album has been broadcast by many radio stations around the world, and acclaimed in the international music press (BBC Music Magazine, Songlines Magazine, AramcoWorld magazine).

New York-born Will Galison, a graduate of Boston’s renowned Berklee College of Music, is one of the greatest chromatic harmonicists of our time. The distinctiveness of his playing and phrasing gives him that unique sound heard on the themes of Sesame Street, The Untouchables, Bagdad Café and countless other music scores. As jazz piano virtuoso Kenny Werner said, “Will has always been a superb player, but his playing just gets deeper and deeper. I’ve played with the master [Toots Thielemans], and Will is right up there”.

Thielemans himself described Will Galison as “the most original and individual of the new generation of harmonica players”.

Internationally acclaimed, Will has performed with stars as varied as Sting, Donald Fagen (Steely Dan), Tommy Emmanuel, Barbra Streisand, Carly Simon, Chaka Khan, Ruth Brown, Jaco Pastorius, the O’Jays and Peggy Lee. He has published numerous albums under his own name and as a co-leader with other major talents from around the world. Most notably, his album recorded

with singer Madeleine Peyroux, Got You On My Mind (2003), has been described by Jazz Times as “a match made in heaven”.

He has collaborated with many renowned artists, such as Australian jazz singer and pianist Janet Siedler, and on several occasions with French composer and pianist Karim Maurice, with whom he has performed extensively in France in recent years.

Will Galison also made a name for himself in 2008 with his election campaign clip for President Barack Obama. The title Takin’it Back with Barack was rated the best campaign song of the election season by the Huffington Post, and received over 600,000 views on YouTube, including several by the President himself.

Gaël Rassaert trained at the National Conservatory of Music and Dance of Lyon (CNSMDL, DNESM obtained in 1995), studied violin with Elisabeth Balmas and Claire Bernard and perfected his scholarship with writing and orchestration. Keen to meet other 6 6

virtuosos of the instrument, he went on to study in Utrecht (Netherlands) with Philippe Hirschhorn, whose exceptional personality left a strong imprint. He continued his career in Aachen with Charles-André Linale. He is influenced by artists such as Menahem Pressler, György Kurtág, and members of the Amadeus Quartet, whose teaching he receives. Gaël Rassaert is laureate of several chamber music competitions, in trio, quartet, and plays in string sextet and octet, formations with which he performs in many countries.

Passionate about the transmission of music, he regularly supervises educational projects with string students from conservatories and music schools – a way of keeping in touch with young musicians and teachers.

Gaël Rassaert was a member of the European Camerata, directed for violin by Laurent Quenelle, then violin solo of the ChalonBourgogne Orchestra. The strength of these experiences led him to create the string orchestra La Camerata in 2004, as head of

musical direction and artistic programming.

In 2007, he became soloist of the Ensemble Orchestral Contemporain, directed by Daniel Kawka. This 15-piece orchestra boldly explores all repertoires from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day, appoints numerous commissions for composers and records monographs: Hugues Dufour, Pierre Boulez, Ondrej Adamek... Philippe Manoury’s B-Partita written for violin solo, ensemble and electronics, will be released in May 2019 on the Austrian label Col Legno.

Violinist of the Ensemble Darcos in Portugal, under the musical direction of composer Nuno Côrte-Real, he regularly performs in concert for Portuguese radio and television.

Several albums have been recorded (Volupia, Mirror of the Soul, Agora Muda Tudo). In parallel with his chamber musician, soloist and musical director activities, Gaël Rassaert is invited as soloist by the National Orchestra of Lyon, the National Opera of Lyon and the Orchestra of the Pays de Savoie.

La Camerata is an unusual ensemble: 20 musicians from Lyon who play standing up, without a conductor, like an extended chamber group. Always dynamic and in motion, their freedom and commitment are unmistakable. Eye-contact and emotions, palpable and shared, bring a live and communicative dimension to performances, which is felt on stage and in the concert hall. Created by Gaël Rassaert, solo violin and Artistic Director, La Camerata has established itself as an important player in the musical landscape, distinguished by an original artistic purpose, freed from hierarchical structures inherited from the 19th century. In so doing, the group favours a more participative and democratic approach. La Camerata is particularly fond of mixed projects and repertoires distant from their native “classical” background, a stance which does not prevent the group from celebrating enthusiastically the beautiful works written for strings, and especially those from the 20th century (Schoenberg, Bartók, Britten, Shostakovich, etc).

Always complementary, the new selected repertoires take them on different, more creative paths, towards other musical forms linked to meetings and connection: traditional music (Algeria, Argentina, Chile), jazz and contemporary music (commissions and creations in pedagogical contexts).

The group has also developed an imagebased component (film music, soundtracks for video production, documentaries and television), music and reciting and will continue to do so in future seasons through projects combining music and video, and cine-concerts. La Camerata’s different musical choices have led to various performances across venues and festivals in France (Festival des Arcs, Chaise-Dieu, Besançon) and abroad (Lithuania, Portugal, Switzerland, Algeria, Tunisia, United States).

The orchestra has been supported for many years by SPEDIDAM, an organisation collecting and distributing performers’ rights, and by the Adami. It is also a member of Bureau Export Paris since December 2018.

Odysseus Fantasy, poème musical onirique moderne relatant l’épopée d’Ulysse, fait écho aux chants antiques de l’Odyssée d’Homère. Chaque pièce est pensée comme un tableau illustrant de façon sonore et impressionniste certains personnages de cette légende, leurs sentiments et états d’âme, avec en toile de fond cette omniprésence des divinités et de leur puissance sur les destins et les éléments terrestres.

Ces tableaux musicaux dépeignent la ruse d’Ulysse avec le Cyclope ; son voyage sur les mers grâce au sac d’Éole ; sa relation avec Circé ; celle avec Calypso et ces sept années sur fond d’immortalité ; l’épisode où le héros est ligoté au mât de son navire écoutant le chant envoûtant des Sirènes sur leur île morbide ; les songes de Pénélope tissant et défaisant sa toile ; puis enfin la vengeance et les retrouvailles alors qu’il est de retour à Ithaque.

Odysseus Fantasy, au-delà de son instrumentation, est une sorte d’Aède orchestral chantant des épisodes de l’œuvre d’Homère, et ouvrant un imaginaire que chacun s’approprie avec ses représentations du mythe guidées par la musique. La formation pour harmonica chromatique, trio jazz, orchestre à cordes et harpe, offre une vaste palette de couleurs orchestrales modernes, et place un instrument qui reste populairement lié au blues, au rock, au jazz et à la country, dans un paysage sonore inédit, rendant hommage à l’un des plus grands chefs d’œuvre de la littérature et de la musique antique. Cette nouvelle création vise ainsi à métisser les genres, les arts et les époques pour aboutir à une œuvre originale sur un sujet plusieurs fois millénaire.

Karim Maurice est un pianiste, compositeur et arrangeur français qui évolue dans un champ large d’esthétiques musicales autant pour des orchestres classiques que dans le domaine du jazz et des musiques actuelles. Concertiste international, il parcourt différentes scènes à la fois comme sideman et comme leader.

Ses projets personnels sont axés sur un fort métissage artistique, favorisant la rencontre et l’échange en abolissant les frontières musicales.

Né en 1976 à Grenoble, Karim Maurice suit une double formation, classique et jazz aux conservatoires de Grenoble et Chambéry avant d’obtenir en 2003 le Premier Prix d’Écriture et Orchestration au Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Lyon. Formé au Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Lyon (CNSMDL, DNESM obtenu en 1995), Gaël Rassaert étudie le violon avec Elisabeth Balmas et Claire Bernard, complète ses connaissances par l’écriture et l’orchestration.

Curieux de rencontrer d’autres virtuoses de l’instrument, il part étudier à Utrecht (Pays-Bas) avec Philippe Hirschhorn, dont la personnalité exceptionnelle lui laisse une empreinte forte. Il poursuit son parcours à Aachen auprès de Charles-André Linale. Il est alors influencé par des artistes comme Menahem Pressler, György Kurtág, ou encore les membres du quatuor Amadeus, dont il reçoit les enseignements. Gaël Rassaert est lauréat de plusieurs concours de musique de chambre, en trio, quatuor, et joue en sextuor et octuor à cordes, formations avec lesquelles il se produit dans de nombreux pays. Engagé dans la transmission, il encadre régulièrement des projets pédagogiques avec des élèves cordes des conservatoires et écoles de musique – une manière de garder le contact avec les jeunes musiciens et professeurs.

Gaël Rassaert a été membre de la European Camerata, dirigée au violon par Laurent Quenelle, puis violon solo de l’Orchestre Chalon-Bourgogne. La force de ces expériences l’incite à créer en 2004 l’orchestre à cordes La Camerata, dont il assure la direction musicale et la programmation artistique. En 2007, il devient soliste de l’Ensemble Orchestral Contemporain, dirigé par Daniel Kawka. Cet orchestre de 15 musiciens défriche audacieusement tous les répertoires du début du XXe siècle à nos jours, passe de nombreuses commandes à des compositeurs, enregistre des monographies : Hugues Dufour, Pierre Boulez, Ondrej Adamek…

La B-Partita de Philippe Manoury, écrite pour violon soliste, ensemble et électronique, sortira en mai 2019 sous le label autrichien Col Legno.

La Camerata est une formation peu ordinaire : 20 musiciens lyonnais jouent debout, sans chef d’orchestre, tel un groupe de musique de chambre étoffé.

Dynamiques, en mouvement, ils ont une liberté et une implication particulièrement fortes. Les regards et les émotions, palpables et partagés, offrent une dimension vivante, communicative, perceptible sur scène et dans la salle. Créé par Gaël Rassaert, violon solo et Directeur Artistique, La Camerata s’impose comme un acteur important dans le paysage musical, se démarquant par une ligne artistique originale, affranchie des fonctionnements hiérarchisés hérités du XIXe siècle. L’ensemble privilégie ainsi un travail et un engagement plus participatifs et démocratiques. La Camerata affectionne particulièrement les projets mixtes et les répertoires éloignés de sa formation native “classique”, ce qui ne l’empêche pas de défendre avec ferveur les très belles œuvres écrites pour cordes, et plus particulièrement celles composées au XXe siècle (Schoenberg, Bartók, Britten, Chostakovitch).

Complémentaires, les nouveaux répertoires choisis l’emmènent sur d’autres sentiers plus créatifs, vers d’autres musiques liées aux rencontres : musiques traditionnelles (Algérie, Argentine, Chili), jazz et musique contemporaine (commandes et créations dans des contextes également pédagogiques). L’ensemble développe aussi un volet autour de l’image (musique de film, enregistrements de bandes son pour la production vidéo, les documentaires et la télévision), musique et récitant, et continuera dans les saisons futures par des créations associant musique et vidéo, et des ciné-concerts. Les différents choix musicaux de La Camerata lui permettent de jouer dans des festivals français reconnus (Festival des Arcs, de la Chaise-Dieu, de Besançon...), et à l’étranger (Portugal, Lituanie, Suisse, Algérie, Tunisie, États-Unis).

L’orchestre est aidé par la SPEDIDAM, Société de Perception et de Distribution des Droits des Artistes Interprètes, et par l’Adami. Il est également membre du Bureau Export Paris depuis décembre 2018.

Odysseus Fantasy – ein modernes, traumähnliches musikalisches Epos, das die Geschichte von Odysseus erzählt – erinnert an die alten Lieder von Homers Odyssee. Jedes Stück ist als ein Gemälde konzipiert, das bestimmte Charaktere dieser Legende, ihre Gefühle und Gemütszustände vor dem Hintergrund allgegenwärtiger Gottheiten und ihrer Macht über die Schicksale der Sterblichen und die irdischen Elemente auf klangvolle und impressionistische Weise darstellt.

Diese musikalischen Bilder zeigen Odysseus’ Überlistung des Zyklopen auf, seine Irrfahrten auf dem Meer, angetrieben von den Winden des Aeolus, seine Beziehung zu Kirke, die zu Calypso und dann die sieben Jahre vor dem Hintergrund der Unsterblichkeit. Dann gibt es die Episode, in der der Held an den Mast seines Schiffes gebunden ist, während er das betörende Lied der Sirenen von ihrer morbiden Insel her hört; die Träume von Penelope, die ihr tagsüber gewebtes Tuch in der Nacht immer wieder auflöst, und schließlich die Rache und Wiedervereinigung mit Odysseus bei seiner Rückkehr nach Ithaca.

Odysseus Fantasy ist von ihrer Instrumentation her eine Art „orchestaler Aoede” (ein oraler, epischer Dichter), der die Episoden von Homers Werk besingt und eine Phantasiewelt eröffnet, die jeder durch diese musikalischen Darstellungen des Mythos zu seiner eigenen machen kann. Die Kombination aus chromatischer Mundharmonika, Jazz-Trio, Streichorchester und Harfe bietet eine breite Palette an modernen Orchesterfarben. Sie bringt in einer einzigartigen Klangkulisse ein Instrument ein, das gemeinhin mit Blues, Rock, Jazz und Country in Verbindung gebracht wird, und würdigt dabei eines der größten Meisterwerke der Literatur und alter Musik. Diese neue Kreation zielt darauf ab, Genres, Künste und Epochen zu vermengen, um ein originelles Werk zu einem mehrere tausend Jahre alten Thema zu schaffen.

Karim Maurice ist ein französischer Pianist, Komponist und Arrangeur, der auf einem weitgefächerten Gebiet der musikalischen Ästhetik arbeitet, sei es für klassische Orchester oder für Jazz und zeitgenössische Musik. Als internationaler Performer tritt er sowohl als Begleitmusiker, als auch Solist auf. Seine persönlichen Projekte sind auf eine breite künstlerische Vielfalt ausgerichtet und fördern den Dialog und Austausch durch Aufhebung musikalischer Grenzen.

Karim Maurice wurde 1976 in Grenoble geboren und absolvierte eine duale Ausbildung in Klassik und Jazz an den Konservatorien von Grenoble und Chambéry, bevor er 2003 den ersten Preis für Komposition und Orchestrierung am Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et Danse de Lyon erhielt. Sein Karim Maurice-Projekt wurde beim Jazz-Festival von Ramatuelle als Offenbarung von 2008 bezeichnet. 2013 gewann er den SACEM Autoproduction Award

sowie eine Mitgliedschaft bei Francophonie Diffusion. Für dieses Projekt wurde er 2015 bei der internationalen Made in New York Jazz Competition von einer Jury, bestehend aus Joe Lovano, Randy Brecker und Lenny White, als bester Komponist und insgesamt zweitbester Wettbewerbsteilnehmer ausgezeichnet.

2016 erhielt er ein Stipendium bei der French American Jazz Exchange (FAJE) Foundation für seine Odysseus Fantasy, in Zusammenarbeit mit Will Galison und La Camerata.

Seit 2017 leitet er das europäische Kollektiv LeBocal. Im Januar 2018 veröffentlichte er das Odradek-Album Koum Tara mit der gleichnamigen Gruppe, einer einzigartigen Mischung aus algerischem Chaabi, Jazz und klassischer Musik einschließlich Streichquartett. Wahlsaison ausgezeichnet und erhielt auf YouTube über 600.000 Aufrufe, darunter auch einige des Präsidenten selbst.

Gaël Rassaert absolvierte eine Ausbildung am Nationalen Konservatorium für Musik und Tanz in Lyon (1995 Abschluss in CNSMDL, DNESM), studierte Violine bei Elisabeth Balmas und Claire Bernard und besserte sein Stipendium mit Komposition und Orchestrierung auf. Er war begierig, andere Virtuosen des Instruments kennenzulernen und studierte daraufhin bei Philippe Hirschhorn in Utrecht (Niederlande), dessen außergewöhnliche Persönlichkeit einen starken Eindruck bei ihm hinterließ. Er setzte seine Ausbildung in Aachen bei Charles-André Linale fort.

Er wurde von Künstlern wie Menahem Pressler, György Kurtág und Mitgliedern des Amadeus Quartetts beeinflusst, bei denen er Unterricht erhielt. Gaël

Rassaert ist Preisträger mehrerer Kammermusikwettbewerbe und tritt mit Trio-, Quartett-, Streichsextett- und Oktettformationen in vielen Ländern auf. Aus Leidenschaft für die Verbreitung von Musik betreut er regelmäßig Bildungsprojekte mit StreichinstrumentStudenten aus Konservatorien und Musikschulen, um so mit jungen Musikern und Lehrern in Kontakt zu bleiben.

Gaël Rassaert war Mitglied der Camerata Europea, die von Laurent Quenelle, dem späteren Soloviolinisten des Chalon-Bourgogne Orchestra, geleitet wurde. Die dort gewonnenen starken Eindrücke führten dazu, dass er 2004 das Streichorchester La Camerata als musikalischer Leiter und Programmgestalter gründete.

2007 wurde er Solist des Ensemble Orchestral Contemporain unter der Leitung von Daniel Kawka. Dieses 15-köpfige Orchester 18 18

erforscht unermüdlich alle Repertoires vom Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts bis heute, erteilt zahlreiche Aufträge für Komponisten und zeichnet Monographien auf: Hugues Dufour, Pierre Boulez und Ondrej Adamek. Philippe Manourys B-Partita für Solovioline, Ensemble und Elektronik erscheint im Mai 2019 beim österreichischen Label Col Legno.

Der Violinist des Ensembles Darcos in Portugal unter der musikalischen Leitung des Komponisten Nuno CôrteReal tritt regelmäßig im portugiesischen Radio und Fernsehen auf. Es wurden mehrere Alben aufgenommen (Volupia, Mirror of the Soul, Agora Muda Tudo). Parallel zu seiner Tätigkeit als Kammermusiker, Solist und musikalischer Leiter wird Gaël Rassaert regelmäßig vom Nationalorchester von Lyon, der Nationaloper von Lyon und dem Orchester der Pays de Savoie als Solist eingeladen.

La Camerata ist ein ungewöhnliches Ensemble: 20 Musiker aus Lyon, die im Stehen ohne Dirigenten wie eine erweiterte Kammermusiktruppe spielen.

Immer dynamisch und in Bewegung sind ihre Freude am Spiel und ihr Engagement unverkennbar.

Augenkontakt und fühlbar geteilte Emotionen verleihen den Aufführungen eine lebendige und kommunikative Dimension, die auf der Bühne und im Konzertsaal zu spüren ist.

La Camerata wurde von Gaël Rassaert, Soloviolinist und künstlerischer Leiter gegründet und hat sich als bedeutendes Element in der musikalischen Landschaft etabliert. Sie zeichnet sich durch eine originelle künstlerische Zielsetzung aus, die sich von den hierarchischen Strukturen des 19. Jahrhunderts befreit hat. Dabei verfolgt die Gruppe einen partizipativen und demokratischen Ansatz.

Projekte und Repertoires, die von ihrem ursprünglichen „klassischen” Hintergrund abweichen. Eine Haltung, die das Ensemble nicht daran hindert, die schönen Werke für Streicher, insbesondere die des 20.

Jahrhunderts (Schönberg, Bartók, Britten, Shostakovich usw.), mit Begeisterung zu interpretieren.

Stets in Form einer Ergänzung führen uns die neuen Repertoires auf verschiedenen, kreativeren Wegen zu anderen musikalischen Formen: Traditionelle Musik (Algerien, Argentinien, Chile), Jazz und zeitgenössische Musik (Aufträge und Kreationen in pädagogischen Begegnungsstätten). Das Ensemble arbeitet auch in der Sparte Filmmusik, Soundtracks für Videoproduktionen, Dokumentarfilme, Fernsehen, Musik und Rezitieren. Dies wird auch künftig durch Projekte weitergeführt,

die Video-Musik und Filmmusik-Konzerte kombinieren.

Die unterschiedlichen musikalischen Möglichkeiten von La Camerata führten zu diversen Aufführungen an verschiedenen Orten und auf Festivals in Frankreich (Festival des Arcs, ChaiseDieu, Besançon) sowie im Ausland (Litauen, Portugal, Schweiz, Algerien, Tunesien, USA).

Das Orchester wird seit vielen Jahren von der Organisation SPEDIDAM unterstützt, die die Rechte der ausübenden Künstler sammelt und vertritt, sowie von Adami. Seit Dezember 2018 ist es Mitglied des Bureau Export Paris.
