ENG This is the most rewarding recording project for me so far and I envisage it as a step forward towards maturity in my career as an interpreter. I have undergone a life full of very different experiences so as to understand at last how important it is to stay in contact with the music of composers of our generation and how responsible we are as interpreters for placing good contemporary music on the map. My relationship with Armando goes beyond that of teacher and pupil and the admiration I feel for his music is on a par with what I feel for him as a fellow human being. Armando comes from a generation of distinguished pianists and, as a composer, he knows all the ins and outs of piano composition. His music is at the same time profound and poetical, artisanal in its compositional framework while somewhat enigmatic.

Working with him in putting together this album has been a true pleasure. We laughed a lot recalling Ravel’s words about musicians when, alluding to the “improvements” the pianist Paul Wittgenstein made to his Concerto for Left Hand, Ravel reminded him that “performers are slaves”. To have Armando beside me and to listen to his comments and planning the interpretation with his advice made me reflect on the importance of our “archaeological” task when dealing with music from the past, and also about the number of unclear areas that we find between text and a composer’s musical intentionality. At the same time, it was an out-and-out challenge to encounter the balance between my natural musicality (at times far too effusive) and Armando’s more rational and level-headed approach. The result has convinced both of us and from that partnership this recording has come to life, and of that I am truly proud.

Javier Negrín I am probably a musician because my father, Javier Alfonso, was a pianist, composer and teacher. That is why this album, which contains a piece written in his memory, is dedicated to him. Everything I learned about the piano and music in general from my father and other teachers, I tried to pass on to Javier Negrín, who is now the interpreter of my piano works. Thus, through this album, a fruitful connection is produced between people from three different generations dedicated to the marvellous art of music.

Estudio ‘Juego de tresillos’ (2016)

This piece was commissioned by the Centro Nacional de Difusión Musical (CNDM), which is a part of the Instituto Nacional de las Artes Escénicas y de la Música, belonging to the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport. This institution had created a cycle – premiered in Madrid and then taken out to different venues in Spain – whose aim was to offer in concert Beethoven’s 32 Piano Sonatas divided among nine different Spanish pianists. The novelty consisted in alternating the Sonatas chosen for each programme with pieces from contemporary composers, thus giving the cycle the title of “Beethoven today”.

Javier Negrín, one of the pianists taking part, proposed to combine the Sonatas he played in the cycle (Numbers 5, 15 and 30) with two of Ligeti’s Études and some of my Preludes that he had already played in public. However, the organisers of the cycle expressed their preference for my work to be original, especially composed for the occasion, and hinted that it would be interesting that an allusion appear in the piece which would evoke Beethoven in some way. And so, this Estudio ‘Juego de tresillos’ was born. It is developed around ternary rhythms and the triplet, a figure that in this piece distantly recalls the use of triplets in Beethoven’s Sonata 14, Op. 27, No. 2, whose initial motif reappears briefly throughout the piece.

Variaciones sobre el ‘Arrorró’ (1989)

My father, Javier Alfonso (1904-1988), pianist, composer and piano professor at the Conservatorio Superior in Madrid, had died in 1988 and, longing to

write a work in his memory, I had been wondering for some time which form to choose. I finally decided on the variation, which would allow me to use the lullaby theme of the ‘Arrorró’, a beautiful popular melody from the Canary Islands. Years later this work became the official anthem of the Canary Islands but when I chose it I did so because it was a song dedicated to children sleeping that I wanted to use as a metaphor for the eternal slumber my father had descended into.

This work is made up of a theme and 14 variations which, using different techniques and many resources of classical counterpoint, are treated and developed from varying standpoints. The theme, presented at the outset with a very tonal harmonisation, gradually becomes deformed and taken to pieces to the point of taking up features that are almost Picassian (Var. III) while at other times it appears with nuances that are clearly post-Romantic (IX). It may appear in the bass, in an intermediate voice or in inversion (V, VII, IX), arrive as a waltz (X), using Renaissance-inspired counterpoint (XI) or with virtuoso displays in diverse textures (II, VIII, XII, XIII). In Variation XIV, a long introduction, using elements from the original motif, ends up with the reappearance of the ‘Arrorró’ in a grandiose fashion. Being a work dedicated to my father, I wanted this final grandiosity to refer to one of his most popular pieces, the Capricho en forma de Bolero, composed in 1938, which he had played many times in public, always with great success.

The allusion is brief but very faithful, and comes within a setting of great brilliance and exaltation that closes the work.

Albumblatt 1 and 2 (2021)

In accordance with the original intention of the works so titled – which enjoyed wide circulation and popularity throughout the 19th century – these Albumblatt (‘Pages from an Album’) are pleasant pieces without great technical difficulty and destined to bring to mind and pay tribute to people who, for one reason or another, have had a special place in my life.

Suite (1956)

The German pianist Margot Pinter visited Madrid in 1956 to give a course on interpreting contemporary music, which included a recital with pieces by Bartók (Microcosmos), Hindemith, Nikos Skalkottas, Schoenberg and some others. At that time, 20th century composers were still very little known in Spain, except for Richard Strauss, Rachmaninov, Ravel, Stravinsky, Falla, Turina and a few others.

As vinyl records had just appeared and there were practically no recordings of new music, the only way to hear new music was at live concerts. For that reason, we, the ones who moved around in the world of musical creation, attended with great interest any event that could open our ears to such unknown sound worlds.

In this way I gradually discovered some Schoenberg, Honegger, Prokofiev, Messiaen, Dallapiccola, etc., and above all Bartók, who seemed more familiar to me because it was my father who, in 1952, premiered in Spain his Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Orquesta Nacional de España under the

baton of Ataúlfo Argenta, and sometime later the Sonata for two pianos and percussion, with his pupil Pedro Espinosa. Margot Pinter’s recital was in that respect very revealing and she encouraged us young composers of the time to write new works for the piano.

A result of all that encouragement was the Suite included in this recording dedicated to her and made up of five pieces developed within an atonalism or a very free quasi-atonalism. At the time of its composition the study and analysis of dodecaphonism (later also of serialism) were beginning in Spain under the enormous influence of Darmstadt and Donaueschingen. I was only interested in them from a theoretical and historical point of view but for composition I always preferred utter freedom, capable of taking in multiple influences to which we, as young composers, were subjected.

These influences are most likely present in the five movements of this Suite, in which I introduced technical aspects that I thought were my own invention at the time, such as the superposition of bar punctuation, different for each hand, in the first movement, or the suppression of measure or bar lines throughout the third movement and partly in the fifth. I later discovered that the same or similar ideas had likewise occurred to other composers.

I premiered this Suite myself in 1957 during an audition of the works by students from the composition class at the Madrid Conservatorio.

I had shown it previously to my professor, Julio Gómez (obviously trained in a far more conservative 6

milieu), who, not rejecting it straight out since he was flexible and understanding towards the daring and audacity of his students, told me: “I think you would do well to moderate your impetus a little”.

Preludios para pianistas amigos (1996-1997)

The variations dedicated to my father gave me the idea of composing a series of preludes dedicated to pianists with whom I had held close affinity.

Some of them – Pedro Espinosa, María Teresa de los Ángeles – had been my father’s students and had collaborated with him in the many recitals for two pianos that he gave throughout his long life.

This was something that always interested him and he dedicated some of his works to this form, such as Variaciones sobre un tema castellano, Imbricaciones y distonías or the Fantasía cíclica

en tres movimientos for two pianos and orchestra.

Another student, Javier Negrín, had been mine and he asked me for it for one of his exams in the Royal College of Music in London. In 1990 the English pianist Sophia Unsworth premiered the Variaciones sobre el ‘Arrorró’ included on this album. Others, finally, were pianists who had performed with me several times, I being the conductor of the orchestra, such as Dimitri Bashkirov, Jesús Ángel Rodríguez – who held the piano chair as professor at the Conservatorio Superior in Santa Cruz de Tenerife –, András Schiff and Joaquín Achúcarro. Without abandoning my own personal style, always very free and eager to use all kinds of elements, I tried to reflect in some of these Preludios the personality – or better said my vision of the personality – of those they were dedicated to.

Javier Negrín made his solo debut at the Wigmore Hall in London in 2004 playing works by Ravel and

Jindřich Feld and since then he has been performing both as a soloist and chamber musician in more than 25 countries. Born in the Canary Islands, he studied at the Royal College of Music in London with Yonty Solomon and later on privately with Howard Shelley. He has worked in recent years with such conductors as Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Thomas Rösner, Lawrence Leighton Smith, John Neschling, Yaron Traub, Claus Efland, Gregorio Gutiérrez and Roberto Montenegro, performing concertos by Beethoven, Brahms, Rachmaninov, Grieg, Scriabin, Bartók, Poulenc and Manuel de Falla. Recent performances include presentations in Havana, City of Mexico, and in various countries in Central America, Austria, Portugal, Italy and Spain, where he is also an honorary member of the Quantum Ensemble, with which he performs regularly.

Javier’s records for Linn, IBS Classical, Navona and Odradek have been praised by critics, especially his Odradek solo albums The Travel Preludes of Scriabin and Traces by Granados and Mompou: “Everything about his playing is poised and beautifully proportioned; textures are luminously clear, and he copes with Scriabin’s subtle shifts of emphasis and texture very skilfully” (Andrew Clements, The Guardian); “he has a beautiful feel for the pacing of rubato and in both Granados and Mompou lets the quietest, most reflective passages pull their weight to the most powerful effect” (Jessica Duchen, BBC Music Magazine).

He has most recently released Voices, with the Austrian orchestra Beethoven Philharmonie and conductor Thomas Rösner, with Beethoven’s Op. 61a Piano Concerto, also with Odradek.

Armando Alfonso (b. Paris, 1931) is a Spanish musician who has pursued various fields in the musical

profession. Trained in Spain, France and Italy, he began his career as the conductor of Pilar López’s Ballet Español, with which he toured Europe and Asia. In 1968 he was appointed chief conductor of the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, remaining in the post until 1985, at the same time as holding the chair of Harmony, Counterpoint and Fugue, and Composition in the Conservatorio Superior de Música in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

As orchestral conductor he has taken up the baton in Europe, Asia and North America, working together with the best Spanish soloists and renowned figures from other nationalities such as Dimitri Bashkirov, Vladimir Spivakov, András Schiff, André Navarra, Rudolf Buchbinder, Christian Zacharias, Simca Heled and many more. He is the author of works for the piano like the Suite, Variaciones sobre el “Arrorró” (written in memory of his father, the pianist, composer and professor Javier Alfonso) or Preludios para pianistas amigos, various song cycles accompanied by piano or orchestra, Cinco Piezas para guitarra, Sinfonía para orquesta de cuerda, Cuarteto, etc.

Apart from cooperating on numerous occasions with Radio Nacional de España – particularly with a large cycle dedicated to music from the Canary Islands – his research in the field of musicology has produced a well-documented biography of Carlos Guigou, the French composer from the first half of the 19th century, and an autobiography – and at the same time biography of his father –, Recuerdos de dos vidas de músico (Javier Alfonso–Armando Alfonso). He is a member of the Royal Canarian Academy of Fine Arts of St. Michael the Archangel.

DEU Dies ist das Aufnahmeprojekt, das mir persönlich die meiste Befriedigung verschafft hat, und ich sehe es als einen Schritt vorwärts in der Entwicklung meiner Karriere als Musiker. Ich musste einen Lebensweg voller unterschiedlicher Erfahrungen durchlaufen, um zu erkennen, wie wichtig es ist, mit der Musik von Komponisten unserer Generation in Kontakt zu sein, und welche Verantwortung wir als Interpreten haben, die gute Musik unserer Zeit bekannt zu machen. Ich habe eine Beziehung zu Armando, die über die eines Lehrers und Schülers hinausgeht; meine Bewunderung für seine Musik ist ebenso groß wie die Bewunderung, die ich für ihn als Mensch empfinde. Armando stammt aus einer berühmten Pianistengeneration und kennt als Komponist alle Raffinessen des Klavierspiels. Seine Musik ist zugleich tiefgründig und poetisch, in ihrer kompositorischen Architektur ausgefeilt und ein wenig rätselhaft.

Die Zusammenarbeit mit ihm bei der Vorbereitung dieser CD war eine wahre Freude. Wir haben viel gelacht, als wir uns an Ravels Worte „ihr Interpreten seid Sklaven” erinnerten, in Anspielung auf die Ergänzungen des Pianisten Paul Wittgenstein zu seinem Konzert für die linke Hand. Armando in meiner Nähe zu haben, seine Kommentare zu hören und die Interpretation mit seinen Ratschlägen zu gestalten, hat mich dazu gebracht, über die Bedeutung unserer „archäologischen” Arbeit mit der Musik der Vergangenheit nachzudenken; und auch darüber, wie viele Grauzonen es zwischen dem Text und den musikalischen Absichten des Komponisten gibt. Gleichzeitig war es eine Herausforderung, das Gleichgewicht zwischen meiner natürlichen Musikalität (manchmal zu überschwänglich) und Armandos rationaler und überlegter Vorgehensweise zu finden. Das Ergebnis hat uns beide zufriedengestellt, und aus dieser Symbiose ist dieses Album entstanden, auf das ich besonders stolz bin.

Javier Negrín Wahrscheinlich bin ich Musiker geworden, weil mein Vater, Javier Alfonso, Pianist, Komponist und Musiklehrer war. Deshalb ist diese CD ihm gewidmet und enthält ein an sein Gedenken geschriebenes Werk. Alles, was ich von meinem Vater und anderen Lehrern über das Klavier und die Musik im Allgemeinen gelernt habe, versuchte ich an Javier Negrín weiterzugeben, der jetzt der Interpret meiner Klavierwerke ist. So entsteht durch dieses Album eine fruchtbare Verbindung zwischen Menschen drei verschiedener Generationen, die sich der wunderbaren Kunst der Musik verschrieben haben.

Estudio ‘Juego de tresillos’ (2016) Dieses Stück wurde vom Centro Nacional de Difusión Musical (CNDM) in Auftrag gegeben, das zum Instituto Nacional de las Artes Escénicas y de la Música des spanischen Ministeriums für Bildung, Kultur und Sport gehört. Javier Negrín, einer der teilnehmenden Pianisten, schlug vor, zwischen den Sonaten, die er in diesem Zyklus spielte (Nr. 5, 15 und 30), zwei Etüden von Ligeti und einige meiner Präludien, die er bereits öffentlich gespielt hatte, einzuschieben; aber die Organisatoren des Zyklus zogen es vor, dass mein Stück originell und speziell für diesen Anlass komponiert war, und schlugen vor, auf Beethoven anzuspielen oder ihn in irgendeiner Weise zu zitieren. So entstand Estudio ‘Juego de tresillos’, das um ternäre Rhythmen und die Figur der Triole herum entwickelt wurde, eine Figur, die hier am ehesten in den Triolen von Beethovens Sonate Nr. 14, Op. 27, Nr. 2 anklingt, deren Anfangsmotiv flüchtig immer wieder zitiert wird.

Variaciones sobre el ‘Arrorró’ (1989) Mein Vater Javier Alfonso (1904-1988), Pianist, Komponist und Professor für Klavier am

Conservatorio Superior de Madrid, war 1988 gestorben. Da ich ein Werk zu seinem Gedenken schreiben wollte, zögerte ich eine Zeitlang, welche Form ich wählen sollte. Schließlich entschied ich mich für die Variationsform, die es mir ermöglichte, als Thema den „Arrorró” zu verwenden, eine schöne, populäre Melodie von den Kanarischen Inseln: ein Wiegenlied. Jahre später wurde diese Melodie zur offiziellen Hymne der Kanarischen Inseln, aber als ich sie auswählte, tat ich das, weil es ein Schlaflied war, das ich als Metapher für den ewigen Schlaf verwenden wollte, in den mein Vater gefallen war.

Dieses Werk besteht aus dem Thema und vierzehn Variationen, die mit verschiedenen Techniken und unter Verwendung zahlreicher Mittel des klassischen Kontrapunkts aus sehr unterschiedlichen Ansätzen heraus behandelt und entwickelt werden.

Das Thema – anfangs mit einer sehr tonalen Harmonisierung präsentiert –, wird nach und nach umgeformt und aufgebrochen und kann fast Picasso-mäßige Züge annehmen (Var. III), während es an anderer Stelle von deutlich postromantischen Tönen durchzogen wird (Var. IX). Es kann im Bass, in einer Zwischenstimme oder in der Umkehrung (V, VII, IX), im Walzerrhythmus (X), in einem von der Renaissance inspirierten Kontrapunkt (XI) oder mit virtuosen Darbietungen verschiedener Texturen (II, VIII, XII, XIII) erscheinen. In der Variation XIV führt eine lange Einleitung, die Elemente des ursprünglichen Motivs verwendet, in ausladender Stimmung zum Wiederauftauchen des „Arrorró”Themas. Da dieses Werk meinem Vater gewidmet ist, wollte ich, dass die abschließende Stimmung zu einem Zitat aus einem seiner beliebtesten Stücke führt, dem Capricho en forma de bolero, das er 1938 komponierte und viele Male mit großem Erfolg

öffentlich gespielt hat. Das Zitat ist kurz, aber sehr deutlich und erscheint am Ende des Werkes in einer Atmosphäre von großer Brillanz und Erhabenheit.

Albumblatt 1 y 2 (2021) Entsprechend der ursprünglichen Intention der so betitelten Werke, die sich im 19. Jahrhundert großer Verbreitung und Beliebtheit erfreuten, handelt es sich bei diesen „Albumblättern“ um Stücke von sanftem Charakter ohne großen technischen Schwierigkeitsgrad, die als Erinnerung und Geschenk für Menschen gedacht sind, die aus unterschiedlichsten Gründen einen besonderen Platz in meinen Leben eingenommen haben.

Suite (1956) 1956 besuchte die deutsche Pianistin Margot Pinter Madrid, um einen Kurs über die Interpretation zeitgenössischer Musik zu geben, bei dem sie ein Konzert mit Werken von Bartók (Mikrokosmos), Hindemith, Nikos Skalkottas, Schönberg und einigen anderen veranstaltete. Zu dieser Zeit waren die Komponisten des 20. Jahrhunderts in Spanien noch wenig bekannt, mit Ausnahme von Richard Strauss, Rachmaninow, Ravel, Strawinsky, Falla, Turina und einigen anderen. Da die Schallplatte gerade erst aufkam und es praktisch keine Aufnahmen der neuen Musik gab, war die einzige Möglichkeit, sie kennenzulernen, ein Live-Konzert, und so besuchten diejenigen von uns, die sich in der Welt des Musikschaffens bewegten, mit großem Interesse jede Veranstaltung, die unsere Ohren für diese unbekannten Klangwelten öffnen konnte.

So entdeckte ich so manches von Schönberg, Honegger, Prokofjew, Messiaen, Dallapiccola usw. und ganz besonders auch Bartók, der mir immer vertrauter wurde, denn es war mein Vater, der 1952 in Spanien sein Konzert Nr. 3 für Klavier und Orchester mit dem Orquesta Nacional de España unter der Leitung von Ataúlfo Argenta und kurz darauf die Sonate für zwei Klaviere und Schlagzeug mit seinem Schüler Pedro Espinosa uraufführte.

Das Konzert von Margot Pinter erwies sich in dieser Hinsicht als sehr aufschlussreich, und sie ermutigte die jungen Komponisten dieser Zeit, neue Werke für Klavier zu schreiben.

Infolge all dieser Anregungen entstand die ihr gewidmete Suite auf dieser CD, die aus fünf Stücken besteht, welche sich in einer sehr freien Atonalität oder Quasi-Atonalität entwickeln. Zur Zeit seiner Komposition war das Studium und die Analyse der Zwölftonmusik (später auch des Serialismus) in Spanien durch den bedeutenden Einfluss von Darmstadt und Donaueschingen üblich geworden. Ich habe mich für diese Verfahren nur aus theoretischer und historischer Sicht interessiert, aber beim Komponieren habe ich immer die totale Freiheit bevorzugt, um die vielfältigen Einflüsse zu absorbieren, denen wir ausgesetzt waren. Diese Einflüsse sind sicherlich in den fünf Sätzen dieser Suite spürbar, in denen ich technische Aspekte einführe, die ich damals für meine eigene Erfindung hielt, wie die Überlagerung verschiedener Taktarten für jede der Hände (1. Satz) oder die völlige Abwesenheit von Taktarten und Taktstriche in einem ganzen Satz (3. Satz) bzw. einem Teil davon (5.

Satz). Später entdeckte ich, dass die gleichen oder 13

ähnliche Ideen auch schon anderen Komponisten gekommen waren.

Ich selbst habe diese Suite 1957 bei einem Vortragsabend von Studenten der Kompositionsklasse des Madrider Konservatoriums uraufgeführt. Ich hatte es zuvor meinem Lehrer Julio Gómez gezeigt (der logischerweise in einem viel konservativeren Umfeld ausgebildet worden war) und es zwar nicht radikal ablehnte, da er flexibel und verständnisvoll gegenüber dem Wagemut und der Kühnheit seiner Schüler war, zu mir jedoch sagte: „Ich denke, du solltest deinen Elan etwas zügeln”.

Preludios para pianistas amigos (1996-1997) Die meinem Vater gewidmeten Variationen brachten mich auf die Idee, eine Reihe von Präludien zu komponieren, die Pianisten gewidmet sind, mit denen ich besonders eng verbunden war. Einige von ihnen – Pedro Espinosa, María Teresa de los Ángeles – waren Schüler meines Vaters gewesen und hatten mit ihm bei den vielen Konzerten für

zwei Klaviere zusammengearbeitet, die er im Laufe seines Lebens gab, eine Aufführungsart, die ihn immer interessierte und der er einige seiner Werke widmete, wie die Variaciones sobre un tema castellano, Imbricaciones y distonías oder die Fantasía cíclica en tres movimientos für zwei Klaviere und Orchester. Ein anderer – Javier Negrín – war ein Student von mir und bat mich, es für eine seiner Prüfungen am Royal College in London zu spielen.

Die englische Pianistin Sophia Unsworth hat die Variaciones sobre el „Arrorró” 1990 uraufgeführt, die auf dieser CD enthalten sind. Andere schließlich waren Pianisten, die mehrmals mit mir gespielt hatten, wobei ich als Dirigent fungierte, wie Dimitri Bashkirov, Jesús Ángel Rodríguez – der Professor für Klavier am Conservatorio Superior de Santa Cruz de Tenerife war –, András Schiff und Joaquín Achúcarro. Ohne von meinem Stil abzuweichen, der immer sehr frei ist und dazu neigt, alle möglichen Mittel zu verwenden, habe ich in einigen dieser Präludien versucht, die Persönlichkeit (oder vielmehr meine Vorstellung von der Persönlichkeit) der Widmungsträger widerzuspiegeln.

Javier Negrín gab 2004 sein Solodebüt in der Londoner Wigmore Hall mit Werken von Ravel und Jindřich Feld und tritt seitdem sowohl als Solist als auch als Kammermusiker in mehr als 25 Ländern auf. Er wurde auf den Kanarischen Inseln geboren und studierte am Royal College of Music in London bei Yonty Solomon und später privat bei Howard Shelley. In den letzten Jahren hat er mit Dirigenten wie Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Lawrence Leighton Smith, John Neschling, Yaron Traub, Claus Efland, Adrian Leaper, Edmon Colomer, Gregorio Gutiérrez und Roberto Montenegro zusammengearbeitet und Konzerte von Beethoven, Brahms, Rachmaninow, Grieg, Skrjabin, Bartók und Manuel de Falla aufgeführt. Zu seinen jüngsten Auftritten zählen Präsentationen in Havanna, Mexiko und in verschiedenen Ländern Mittelamerikas, in Österreich, Portugal, Italien und Spanien, wo er auch Ehrenmitglied des Quantum Ensembles ist, mit dem er regelmäßig auftritt.

Negríns Aufnahmen für Linn, IBS Classical, Navona und Odradek wurden von den Kritikern gelobt, insbesondere seine Odradek-Soloalben The Travel Preludes (Skrjabin) und Traces (Granados und Mompou): „Alles an seinem Spiel ist ausgeglichen und schön proportioniert; Texturen sind leuchtend klar, und er kommt mit Skrjabins subtilen Betonung und Texturen sehr gekonnt zurecht“ (Andrew Clements, The Guardian); „er hat ein wunderschönes Gefühl für das Rubato und lässt sowohl in Granados als auch in Mompou das Gewicht der leisesten, besinnlichsten Passagen auf die kraftvollste Weise wirken“ (Jessica Duchen, BBC Music Magazine). Kürzlich veröffentlichte er ebenfalls bei Odradek Records seine CD Voices mit der österreichischen Beethoven Philharmonie unter der Leitung von Thomas Rösner, wo er den Solopart von Beethovens Klavierkonzert Op. 61a übernahm.

Armando Alfonso (Paris, 1931) ist ein spanischer Musiker, der verschiedene Facetten des Musikerberufs kultiviert hat. Ausgebildet in Spanien, Frankreich und Italien, begann er seine Tätigkeit als Dirigent beim Ballet Español de Pilar López, mit dem er durch Europa und Asien tourte. 1968 wurde er zum Chefdirigenten des Orquesta Sinfónica de Tenerife ernannt, das er bis 1985 leitete. Diese Tätigkeit verband er gleichzeitig mit einer Professur für Harmonielehre, Kontrapunkt und Fuge sowie Komposition am Conservatorio Superior de Música de Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Als Dirigent ist Amado Alfonso in Europa, Asien und Nordamerika aufgetreten und hat mit den besten spanischen Solisten sowie mit herausragenden Persönlichkeiten anderer Nationalitäten zusammengearbeitet wie Dimitri Bashkirov, Vladimir Spivakov, András Schiff, André Navarra, Rudolf Buchbinder, Christian Zacharias, Simca Heled und vielen anderen. Er hat Werke für Klavier komponiert wie die Suite, Variaciones sobre el „Arrorró” (geschrieben in Erinnerung an seinen Vater, den Pianisten, Komponisten und Musikprofessor Javier Alfonso) oder Preludios para pianistas amigos, mehrere Liederzyklen mit Klavier oder Orchester, Cinco Piezas para guitarra, Sinfonía para orquesta de cuerda, Cuarteto, usw.

Neben zahlreichen Projekten für Radio Nacional de España – insbesondere ein umfangreicher Zyklus, der der Musik auf den Kanarischen Inseln gewidmet ist – ist er im Bereich der musikwissenschaftlichen Forschung Autor einer dokumentierten Biografie des französischen Komponisten der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts Carlos Guigou, und des biografischen und autobiografischen Buches Recuerdos de dos vidas de músico (Erinnerungen an zwei Musikerleben, Javier Alfonso – Armando Alfonso). Er ist Mitglied der Real Academia Canaria de Bellas Artes de San Miguel Arcángel. Im Jahr 2020 verlieh ihm der Stadtrat von Santa Cruz de Tenerife die Goldmedaille der Stadt für kulturelle Verdienste.

ESP Este es el proyecto de grabación que más satisfacción personal me ha dado, y lo veo como un paso adelante en la madurez de mi carrera interpretativa. He tenido que recorrer un camino vital lleno de experiencias muy diversas para darme cuenta de lo importante que es estar en contacto con la música de compositores de nuestra generación y de la responsabilidad que tenemos como intérpretes para dar a conocer la buena música de nuestro tiempo. Con Armando me une una relación que va más allá de la de profesor y alumno; la admiración que siento por su música es paralela a la que siento por él como ser humano. Armando proviene de una generación ilustre de pianistas, y como compositor conoce todos los entresijos de la escritura para piano. Su música es al tiempo profunda y poética, artesanal en su arquitectura compositiva y un punto enigmática.

Trabajar con él en la preparación de este disco ha sido un auténtico placer. Nos hemos reído mucho rememorando las palabras de Ravel sobre los intérpretes, cuando, en alusión a los aditamentos del pianista Paul Wittgenstein sobre su concierto para la mano izquierda, le recordó que “los intérpretes sois esclavos”. Tener a Armando cerca, escuchar sus comentarios y construir la interpretación con sus consejos me ha hecho reflexionar sobre la importancia de nuestra labor “arqueológica” con la música del pasado; y también sobre la cantidad de zonas de sombra que existen entre el texto y las intenciones musicales del compositor. Al mismo tiempo, ha sido todo un reto encontrar el equilibrio entre mi musicalidad natural (a veces demasiado efusiva) y el acercamiento más racional y ponderado de Armando. El resultado nos ha satisfecho a los dos y de esta simbiosis nace este disco del que estoy especialmente orgulloso.

Javier Negrín Seguramente soy músico porque mi padre, Javier Alfonso, fue pianista, compositor y pedagogo. Por eso este disco, que contiene una obra escrita en su memoria, está dedicado a él. Todo lo que aprendí de mi padre y de otros maestros, sobre el piano y la música en general, intenté transmitírselo a Javier Negrín, que ahora es el intérprete de mis obras para piano. Se produce así, a través de este disco, una conexión fecunda entre personas de tres generaciones distintas dedicadas al maravilloso arte de la música.

Estudio ‘Juego de tresillos’ (2016) Esta pieza fue un encargo del Centro Nacional de Difusión Musical (CNDM), dependiente del Instituto Nacional de las Artes Escénicas y de la Música del Ministerio español de Educación, Cultura y Deportes.

Este organismo había ideado un ciclo –estrenado en Madrid y que luego se desarrolló por muchos lugares de España– cuyo propósito era ofrecer la audición de las 32 Sonatas para piano de Beethoven repartidas entre nueve pianistas españoles, pero con la particularidad de que entre las distintas Sonatas de cada programa se intercalaran piezas de compositores contemporáneos.

Por eso titularon el ciclo “Beethoven actual”.

Javier Negrín, que fue uno de los pianistas participantes, propuso intercalar entre las Sonatas que tocó en este ciclo (5, 15 y 30) dos estudios de Ligeti y alguno de mis Preludios que él ya había tocado en público; pero los promotores del ciclo prefirieron que mi pieza fuera original, especialmente compuesta para aquella ocasión, e insinuaron lo interesante que sería que en ella se aludiera o evocara a Beethoven de alguna manera. Así surgió este Estudio ‘Juego de tresillos’, que se desarrolla todo él en torno a los ritmos ternarios y a la figura del tresillo, figura que aquí tiene su evocación más lejana en los tresillos de la Sonata 14, op. 27, nº 2 de Beethoven, cuyo motivo inicial aparece fugazmente citado a lo largo de la pieza.

Variaciones sobre el ‘Arrorró’ (1989) Mi padre, Javier Alfonso (1904-1988), que fue pianista, compositor y catedrático de piano en el Conservatorio

Superior de Madrid, había fallecido en 1988. Deseando escribir una obra en su memoria, estuve dudando algún tiempo sobre qué forma elegir. Finalmente me decidí por la variación, que me permitía utilizar como tema el “Arrorró”, bella melodía popular de las Islas Canarias que es una canción de cuna. Años más tarde esta melodía se convirtió en el himno oficial de Canarias, pero cuando yo la elegí lo hice por su condición de canción dedicada al sueño de los niños, que quise utilizar como metáfora del sueño eterno en el que se había sumido mi padre.

Esta obra se compone del tema y catorce variaciones, que, con técnicas varias y utilizando muchos de los recursos del contrapunto clásico, son tratadas y desarrolladas desde enfoques muy diversos. El tema, presentado inicialmente con una armonización muy tonal, va siendo progresivamente deformado y despiezado pudiendo llegar a adquirir rasgos casi picassianos (Var. III), mientras en otros momentos aparece iluminado por tintes claramente postrománticos (IX). Puede aparecer en el bajo, en una voz intermedia o en inversión (V, VII, IX), presentarse en ritmo de vals (X), en contrapunto de inspiración renacentista (XI) o con despliegues virtuosísticos de diferentes texturas (II, VIII, XII, XIII). En la variación XIV, una larga introducción, que utiliza elementos del motivo original, desemboca en la reaparición del tema del “Arrorró” en ambiente de grandiosidad. Por ser una obra dedicada a mi padre, quise que esa grandiosidad final condujera a la cita de una de sus piezas más populares, el Capricho en forma de bolero, compuesta en 1938, que su autor había tocado en público muchas 20

veces, siempre con enorme éxito. La cita es breve, pero muy literal, y se produce en el clima de gran brillantez y exaltación con que se cierra la obra.

Albumblatt 1 y 2 (2021) De acuerdo con la intención originaria de las obras así tituladas –que gozaron de gran difusión y popularidad a lo largo del siglo XIX– estas Albumblatt (“Hoja de álbum”) son piezas de carácter amable y no gran dificultad técnica, destinadas a recordar y obsequiar a personas que, por distinto motivo, han ocupado un lugar especial en mis vivencias.

Suite (1956) En 1956 visitó Madrid la pianista alemana Margot Pinter para impartir un curso sobre interpretación de la música contemporánea, dentro del cual dio un recital que incluía piezas de Bartók (Microcosmos), Hindemith, Nikos Skalkottas, Schönberg y algunos otros. En aquellos tiempos, los compositores del siglo XX eran todavía muy poco conocidos en España, excepto Richard Strauss, Rachmaninov, Ravel, Stravinsky, Falla, Turina y pocos más. Como el disco de vinilo acababa de aparecer y no había prácticamente grabaciones de las nuevas músicas, la única manera de conocerlas eran los conciertos en vivo, por lo cual los que nos movíamos en el mundo de la creación musical asistíamos con mucho interés a cualquier evento que pudiera ir abriendo nuestros oídos a aquellos mundos sonoros desconocidos.

Así fui yo descubriendo algo de Schönberg, Honegger, Prokofiev, Messiaen, Dallapiccola, etc., y sobre todo Bartók, que siempre me resultó más familiar porque fue mi padre quien, en 1952, estrenó en España su Concierto nº 3 para piano y orquesta con la Orquesta Nacional de España dirigida por Ataulfo Argenta, y poco más tarde la Sonata para dos pianos y percusión, con su alumno Pedro Espinosa. El recital de Margot Pinter resultó, en este aspecto, muy revelador, y ella nos incitó a los jóvenes compositores del momento a que escribiéramos nuevas obras para piano.

Resultado de todos aquellos estímulos fue la Suite que se incluye en este disco, dedicada a ella, integrada por cinco piezas que se desarrollan dentro un atonalismo o casi atonalismo muy libre. En el momento de su composición empezaba a estar de moda en España el estudio y análisis del dodecafonismo (más tarde también del serialismo) por la gran influencia de Darmstadt y Donaueschingen. A mi sólo me interesaron estos procedimientos desde el punto de vista teórico e histórico, pero para la composición siempre preferí la libertad total, capaz de absorber las múltiples influencias a las que los nuevos compositores nos veíamos sometidos. Seguramente esas influencias están presentes en los cinco movimientos de esta Suite, en los cuales introduzco aspectos técnicos que yo creí en su momento invención mía, como la superposición de indicaciones de compás distintas para cada una de las manos (1º movimiento) o la supresión total de indicaciones de compás y líneas divisorias en todo un movimiento (3º) o en parte de él (5º). Más tarde descubrí

que iguales o parecidas ideas se les habían ocurrido también a otros compositores.

Esta Suite la estrené yo mismo en 1957 en una audición de obras de alumnos de la clase de composición del Conservatorio de Madrid. Antes se la había mostrado a mi profesor, Julio Gómez (lógicamente formado en ambientes mucho más conservadores), quien sin rechazarla radicalmente, puesto que él era flexible y comprensivo para los atrevimientos y audacias de los alumnos, me dijo: “Creo que deberías moderar un poco tus ímpetus”.

Preludios para pianistas amigos (1996-1997) Las variaciones dedicadas a mi padre me sugirieron la idea de componer una serie de preludios dedicados a pianistas con los que yo había tenido un trato de particular proximidad. Unos –Pedro Espinosa, María Teresa de los Ángeles– habían sido alumnos de mi padre y habían colaborado con él en los muchos

recitales a dos pianos que dio a lo largo de su vida, modalidad que siempre le interesó y a la que dedicó algunas de sus obras, como las Variaciones sobre un tema castellano, Imbricaciones y distonías o la Fantasía cíclica en tres movimientos para dos pianos y orquesta. Otro –Javier Negrín– había sido alumno mío y me lo pidió para uno de sus exámenes en el Royal College de Londres. La pianista inglesa Sophia Unsworth fue quien estrenó, en 1990, las Variaciones sobre el “Arrorró” que figuran en este disco. Otros, finalmente, eran pianistas que habían tocado varias veces conmigo, actuando yo como director de orquesta, como Dimitri Bashkirov, Jesús Ángel Rodríguez –que fué catedrático de piano en el Conservatorio Superior de Santa Cruz de Tenerife–, András Schiff y Joaquín Achúcarro. Sin salir de mi estilo, siempre muy libre y propicio a utilizar toda clase de recursos, intenté en algunos de estos Preludios reflejar la personalidad (o más bien mi visión de la personalidad) de los dedicatarios.

Javier Negrín debutó en el Wigmore Hall de Londres en 2004 tocando obras de Ravel y Jindřich Feld y desde entonces ha tocado como solista y músico de cámara en más de veinticinco países. Nacido en las Islas Canarias, estudió en el Royal College of Music de Londres con Yonty Solomon y luego de manera privada con Howard Shelley. En los últimos años ha trabajado con directores como Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Thomas Rösner, Lawrence Leighton Smith, John Neschling, Yaron Traub, Claus Efland, Adrian Leaper, Edmon Colomer, Gregorio Gutiérrez y Roberto Montenegro, interpretando conciertos de Beethoven, Brahms, Rachmaninoff, Grieg, Scriabin, Bartók, Poulenc y Manuel de Falla. Ha actuado recientemente en La Habana, Ciudad de México, en varios países de Centroamérica y en Austria, Portugal, Italia y España, en donde es un miembro honorario del Quantum Ensemble, con el que toca regularmente.

Las grabaciones de Javier para Linn, IBS Classical, Navona y Odradek Records han sido elogiadas por la crítica, especialmente sus grabaciones para piano solo The Travel Preludes sobre Scriabin y Traces sobre Granados y Mompou: “su manera de tocar es equilibrada y hermosamente proporcionada; las texturas son luminosamente claras, y maneja hábilmente los sutiles cambios de énfasis y textura de Scriabin” (Andrew Clements, The Guardian); “Javier tiene una preciosa sensibilidad para gestionar el rubato y tanto en Granados como en Mompou hace que los pasajes más tranquilos y reflexivos nos conmuevan con un influjo poderoso” (Jessica Duchen, BBC Music Magazine). Recientemente ha publicado su disco Voices, con la orquesta austriaca Beethoven Philharmonie y el director Thomas Rösner, con el concierto para piano op. 61a de Beethoven, también con Odradek.

Armando Alfonso (París, 1931), es un músico español que ha cultivado variadas facetas en el campo de la profesión musical. Formado en España, Francia e Italia, inició su actividad como director de orquesta con el Ballet Español de Pilar López, con el que realizó giras por Europa y Asia. En 1968 fue nombrado director titular de la Orquesta Sinfónica de Tenerife, al frente de la cual permaneció hasta 1985, habiendo simultaneado esta actividad con la de catedrático de Armonía, Contrapunto y Fuga y Composición en el Conservatorio Superior de Música de Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

En calidad de director de orquesta ha actuado en Europa, Asia y América del Norte, habiendo colaborado con los mejores solistas españoles y con figuras destacadas de otras nacionalidades, como Dimitri Bashkirov, Vladimir Spivakov, András Schiff, André Navarra, Rudolf Buchbinder, Christian Zacharias, Simca Heled y muchos más. Es autor de obras para piano, como Suite, Variaciones sobre el “Arrorró” (escritas en memoria de su padre, el pianista, compositor y catedrático Javier Alfonso) o Preludios para pianistas amigos, varios ciclos de canciones con piano o con orquesta, Cinco Piezas para guitarra, Sinfonía para orquesta de cuerda, Cuarteto, etc.

Aparte de numerosas colaboraciones para Radio Nacional de España –en particular un amplio ciclo dedicado a la música en las Islas Canarias– en el campo de la investigación musicológica se le debe una documentada biografía del compositor francés de la primera mitad del siglo XIX Carlos Guigou, y el libro biográfico y autobiográfico titulado Recuerdos de dos vidas de músico (Javier Alfonso–Armando Alfonso). Es miembro de la Real Academia Canaria de Bellas Artes de San Miguel Arcángel. En 2020 el Ayuntamiento de Santa Cruz de Tenerife le concedió la Medalla de Oro de la ciudad al mérito cultural.
