At first glance, nothing is further from the grand and majestic Brahms second piano concerto than the short and sparse Webern Concerto. But if we look closer, we start discovering hidden similarities, following the direction of Schoenberg’s famous essay Brahms the Progressive. Schoenberg argued that Brahms, though often regarded as an academic and backwards-looking composer, was, in fact, a precursor to the modernist movement in music. This idea is particularly evident in Brahms’ late works and was the thread of one of my previous albums, entitled Brahms the Progressive (Vol. 1), featuring Opp. 118 and 119 alongside pieces by Webern and Berg.

In this second volume of the series, I would like to show how the same affinity is present also in earlier works by Brahms, such as the second piano concerto. Leaving aside the dimensions and the musical languages (clearly long and tonal in Brahms and short and dodecaphonic in Webern), we find the same deep structures and musical logic. They address the same problems of musical construction: the perfectly economic use of classical forms, the absolute concision (concision does not mean brevity), the presentation of musical material in crystal-like formations, the development of material through an almost geometrical treatment (reversing, inverting, rotating, recombining), leading to a spatial and synchronic sense of music.

These considerations informed my interpretative approach, hoping that the listener might perceive that in both composers rigour and expression, austere structure and unreserved romanticism, walk hand in hand.

In this album, the Webern concerto is featured before the Brahms because it is inevitably from the most recent, the closest to the present, that we look back at the past, and it is only through this reciprocal mirroring of present and past that we can interpret both and prepare the future.

Webern’s Concerto, Op. 24 (1934) and Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 2, Op. 83 (1881) are works that share a title and a deep connection with the Beethovenian Austro-German tradition. But any listener will be struck not by their links but by their stark differences. Most obvious is the difference of scale. Then Brahms’ musical language seems very distant from Webern’s modernism. They are also different types of concerto: Brahms has the conventional arrangement of a soloist with orchestra, while Webern uses an ensemble of nine instruments from which smaller groups sometimes emerge.

Nevertheless, it is the connections between these works that make their juxtaposition on this album so revealing. Both explore their own sense of identity and contain a deep-seated ambiguity about what they are and how we should listen to them.

The critical reaction to Brahms’ Second Piano Concerto has been dominated by questions of genre. In part, these discussions were provoked by the sheer scale of the work – it is one of the longest concertos in the concert repertoire – and by its structure in four movements rather than the usual three. The debate also concerned the sort of music that Brahms wrote in the work: its thematic and motivic connectedness suggested symphonic thinking. It felt like a symphony that just happened to have a piano soloist. But there was a different school of thought, led by Wagner, that proclaimed Brahms’ symphonic writing to be more like chamber music: a domestic music scaled-up for more instruments and larger performance spaces. The pianist in the

Second Concerto therefore plays multiple roles: a concerto soloist engaged in a thematic structure of symphonic proportions, and a chamber musician who is part of the ensemble rather than separate from it.

The Webern Concerto is also chamber music.

It goes even further than Brahms in focusing on thematic material. If Brahms places piano virtuosity in a broader symphonic context, Webern eschews conventional virtuosity altogether to focus on the essence of the musical material. In this prioritisation of thematic treatment, both works are also symphonic. Although instrumental colour is important, it is always placed at the service of the thematic material.

While it was the critics who questioned the generic purity of the Brahms concerto, Webern seemed uncertain from the outset what sort of piece Op. 24 would turn out to be. His first sketches suggest an Orchesterstück (Ouvertüre). Only later was he to think of it as a piano concerto or a Konzertstück.

There is even some evidence that he thought about including voices and a text before the piece emerged as a purely instrumental concerto.

Genre is not the only area of ambiguity these works share. Both composers delight in forms that can be understood in multiple ways and both are adept at making themes and motives blur into each other, creating a fundamental fluidity to the music. Technique of this sort is an obvious point of connection for two composers with a reputation for writing music that is highly crafted and abstract.

However, for both Brahms and Webern this often conceals a more personal response, and each of these works has an interesting connection with extra-musical elements.

In Webern’s music this background is revealed in his sketches. There, the initial stages of a new work are often indicated by references to landscape, family and particularly places with strong personal connections such as the graves of his parents.

The middle movement of Op. 24 is associated in sketches with Schwabegg where his mother was buried. Personal associations are also apparent in Brahms’ third movement, which contains references to Clara Schumann and allusions to Brahms’ own songs. So Brahms and Webern both refer to an important woman in their lives, in music of intimacy and tenderness, tinged with melancholy and sorrow.

The emotional core of these works lies in these moments, regardless of the size and grandeur of the Brahms or the crisp modernism of the Webern. ***** Webern began his Concerto in 1931 but reached an impasse after only 25 bars. The work was not completed until he returned to it three years later.

These were pivotal years in Webern’s career.

He had at last been gaining recognition as a conductor and composer, but everything changed in 1933 with the rise of the Nazis in Germany when both conducting work and performances of his compositions gradually ceased. Webern had more time to write, but the public-facing aspect of his career was effectively at an end.

The Concerto is one of a group of instrumental works Webern wrote after embracing the technique of 12-note serialism. It gained fame (or notoriety) in the 1950s for its purity of construction and was analysed in minute detail by the composers of the post-war avant-garde. One of the attractions for the new generation was that the 12-note series on which the piece was based comprises a single three-note pattern presented in four different ways.

This provided Webern with the means to achieve the deep, almost obsessive, unity he craved. The neatness of the series – its structural perfection – may be one of the reasons he struggled to complete the piece after the initial 25 bars. He needed time to explore how this potent unity of material could become expressive music.

The first movement introduces the raw material of the work with four, three-note motives announced in the wind instruments as an opening flourish. This is answered by the piano with a similar group of motives. Throughout the movement these threenote patterns sparkle with great clarity, in textures of constantly changing instrumental colour and rhythmic nuance.

While the first movement is full of subtle shifts of rhythm and tempo, the second movement reduces the rhythmic values used to just crotchets and minims. The music looks very austere, but it sounds personal and interior, connected with Webern’s deep response to the site of his mother’s grave at Schwabegg. The piano plays throughout the movement with pairs of two-note chords, which ebb 5

and flow like a barcarole. The other instruments have a conversation of tiny fragments of melody, sometimes just a single note, joined into a flowing line through interaction with the continuity of the piano. The expressive quality of the music is highlighted by the frequent markings of calando and finally morendo (both meaning dying away).

The final movement returns to a more obvious kaleidoscopic presentation of the core three-note patterns, but now the rhythms are playful, almost dance-like. Each short rhythmic pattern is regular, but accents and stress patterns are often displaced in engaging and surprising ways. ***** Brahms began his Second Piano Concerto in 1878 and, like Webern, laid it aside for other projects before completing it in 1881. The work opens with a dialogue that has a level of intimacy not unlike the Webern Concerto. The piano responds to the solo horn theme, which is then continued by a small group of woodwinds before an extended passage for solo piano introduces the full orchestra. It is only now that the piece fully suggests the public realm of a grand concerto. The horn solo is evocative of landscape, but, like Webern, there is nothing pictorial about the music; the allusion is subsumed into the structural workings of the material.

The second movement scherzo is impassioned and serious, with great concentration on thematic development. It contrasts dramatically with the more intimate world of the third movement. Here a solo cello provides a foil for the piano, and the pianist is most clearly as much chamber musician as soloist.

The personal quality of the music is confirmed by allusions to the song Todessehenen, Op. 86, No. 6, setting a text of unrequited love, which dates from the same time as the Concerto.

Like Webern, Brahms adopts a lighter tone for his final movement and the relationship between soloist and orchestra is closer to that of a conventional concerto. The thematic logic continues, with the same level of transformation and development, in a form that combines the direction of a sonata with the playfulness of a rondo. ***** The art of thematic variation is fundamental to both Brahms and Webern. In these two works, each composer uses the medium of a concerto to create music that moves between the abstract and the personal, between the intimacy of chamber music and the logic of the symphony, between the experience of real landscape and the interior vision of the musical mind.

PINA NAPOLITANO is, through her teacher Bruno Mezzena, a grand-student of Michelangeli. After studying with Giusi Ambrifi in her native Caserta, she graduated in Piano Solo Performance and 20th-Century Piano Music with Mezzena in Pescara. She has performed with multiple orchestras in Italy and abroad (laVerdi di Milano, Liepāja Symphony, Colibrì Ensemble, Lithuanian National Symphony, Facade Ensemble, New Vienna International).

Her discography includes Brahms the Progressive (Vol. 1), “at once forceful and seductive” (Michael Church); Schoenberg: Complete Piano Works (shortlisted as 2012 Sinfini “Disc of the Year”); Elegy, “proof that dodecaphonic music can be both melodic and moving” (Graham Rickson), “great Brahms, up there with Gilels” (5* International Piano Magazine), awarded the “Record Geijutsu” and Five Diapasons; and most recently Tempo e Tempi. One of the leading Lithuanian conductors, MODESTAS PITRĖNAS became the Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the LNSO in the Autumn of 2015. In 2009–2014, he served as the Principal Conductor of Latvian National Opera (LNO). In 2006–2011, he was the Principal Conductor of the Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra, and since August 2018 he has served as the Principal Conductor of the St Gallen Opera Theatre and Symphony Orchestra (Switzerland).

Pitrėnas has been invited to conduct in the national opera theatres of Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Russia, Germany and Finland, including the Grand Theatre in Warsaw, Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf, Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, St Petersburg Philharmonic Hall, and Deutsche Oper in Berlin. In 2014, under his baton, Wagner’s Rienzi became one of the key events in Riga – European Capital of Culture 2014.

Pitrėnas has recorded over 15 albums of choral and symphonic music. He studied conducting at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre and at the Mozarteum University Salzburg. Currently, he is an Assistant Professor of the Conducting Department at the LAMT, often serving as a jury member in various international competitions.

In addition to many other conducting competitions, Pitrėnas has won the first prize and gold medal at the seventh Grzegorz Fitelberg Conducting Competition in Katowice (Poland, 2003) and was awarded a special prize by the Silesian Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2012 he was honoured with Lithuania’s highest award, the Lithuanian National Culture and Art Prize. For his contribution to Latvian musical culture he was awarded several Latvian music awards and the Cross of Recognition, a state decoration of Latvia.

In 2015 in Riga the Joint Jury of the Baltic Assembly awarded the Baltic Assembly Prize for the Arts to Pitrėnas. In 2019 he was decorated with the Officer’s Cross of the Order for Merits to Lithuania.

THE LITHUANIAN NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA (LNSO), one of the most refined and well-known Lithuanian orchestras, was established in 1940 by the composer, conductor and pianist Balys Dvarionas. From 1964 to 2015 it was led by Juozas Domarkas, and since the autumn of 2015, Modestas Pitrėnas has served as its artistic director and principal conductor. Robertas Šervenikas is the orchestra’s second conductor, while Juozas Domarkas is the honorary conductor.

The orchestra presents annually around 50 concerts in the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Hall and on other stages in Lithuania, extensively tours abroad. It has visited many European countries, Japan, South America and South Korea, and has given concerts in some of the most prominent concert venues of the world, such as Musikverein in Vienna, the philharmonic halls of Cologne and Berlin, the Barbican Centre in London, Alte Oper in Frankfurt, the Berwaldhallen and Town Hall in Stockholm, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Metropolitan and Suntory Hall in Tokyo, the Festival Hall in Osaka, the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Mumbai, the Cultural Centre of Thailand, and many others. The LNSO has also performed at prestigious festivals, such as the Schleswig-Holstein, Musica Romantica in Switzerland, the Moscow Stars, the Russian Winter, the Warsaw Autumn, the Ludwig van Beethoven Easter Festival in Warsaw, the Prague Spring, and festivals in Stresa, Merano, Rheingau, Ludwigsburg and elsewhere.

The orchestra has been conducted by important historical personalities and world-famous masters of the baton, such as Balys Dvarionas, Saulius Sondeckis, Jonas Aleksa, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Mstislav Rostropovich, Krzysztof Penderecki, Kurt Masur, Justus Frantz, Cyril Diederich, Neeme Järvi, Christoph Spering, Christoph Eschenbach, Olivier Grangean and Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla among others. The LNSO has collaborated with many famous performers, instrumentalists and vocalists of different generations and nationalities, including the singers Montserrat Caballé, Jessye Norman, Sergei Larin, Violeta Urmana and Virgilijus Noreika, the pianists Emil Gilels, Dmitri Bashkirov, Daniel Pollack, Sergio Tiempo, Freddy Kempf and Mūza Rubackytė, the violinists Gidon Kremer, Leonid Kogan, Vladimir Spivakov, Julian Rachlin, Sergej Krylov, Philippe Graffin, and Arabella Steinbacher, the cellists Mischa Maisky, Ivan Monighetti, David Geringas, Danjulo Ishizaka and Mstislav Rostropovich, and the viola player Yuri Bashmet.

The basis of the LNSO’s rich repertoire consists of oratorios and symphonies from various epochs, as well as modern contemporary music, with an emphasis on well-known works by Lithuanian composers, from the symphonic poems by Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis to works by Balys Dvarionas, Eduardas Balsys, Julius Juzeliūnas, Feliksas Bajoras, Vytautas Barkauskas, Osvaldas Balakauskas, Vidmantas Bartulis, Onutė Narbutaitė, Raminta Šerkšnytė, Anatolijus Šenderovas, as well as first symphonies by many young composers.

The LNSO’s recordings have been released in Lithuania and abroad (Melodiya, Marco Polo, Col legno, Ella Records, Naxos, Avie Records). In the autumn of 2020, Arvo Pärt’s CD Lamentate with pianist Onutė Gražinytė, cellist Edward King, the LNSO and conductor Modestas Pitrėnas was recorded at the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Hall and Vilnius Record Studio and released by the German record label Accentus Music. Critics of the famous German music magazine Fono Forum gave this sound recording the highest 5-star rating. At the beginning of the 2021, the prestigious Finnish record company Ondine released Žibuoklė Martinaitytė’s CD Saudade with the LNSO, the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra (LCO), conductor Giedrė Šlekytė and pianist Gabrielius Alekna.

DEU Auf den ersten Blick scheint nichts weiter von dem großen und majestätischen zweiten Klavierkonzert von Brahms entfernt als das kurze und spärliche Webern-Konzert. Doch bei näherem Hinsehen entdecken wir versteckte Gemeinsamkeiten, ganz im Sinne von Schönbergs berühmtem Essay Brahms, der Fortschrittliche. Schönberg vertrat die Ansicht, dass Brahms, obwohl er oft als akademischer und konservativer Komponist angesehen wird, in Wirklichkeit ein Vorläufer der musikalischen Moderne war.

Dieser Gedanke wird besonders in Brahms’ Spätwerk deutlich und war der rote Faden eines meiner früheren Alben mit dem Titel Brahms the Progressive (Vol. 1), das neben Stücken von Webern und Berg auch Op. 118 und Op. 119 enthält.

Auf dieser zweiten CD der Reihe möchte ich zeigen, dass die gleiche Affinität auch in früheren Werken von Brahms, wie dem zweiten Klavierkonzert, vorhanden ist. Abgesehen von den Dimensionen und den musikalischen Sprachen (eindeutig lang und tonal bei Brahms und kurz und dodekaphon bei Webern), finden wir dieselben tiefen Strukturen und dieselbe musikalische Logik. Sie befassen sich mit den gleichen Problemen des musikalischen Aufbaus: die vollkommen ökonomische Verwendung klassischer Formen, die absolute Prägnanz (Prägnanz bedeutet nicht Kürze), die Präsentation des musikalischen Materials in kristallklaren Formationen, und die Entwicklung des Materials durch eine fast geometrische Behandlung (Grundform des Themas, Umkehrung, Neukombinationen, Variation), die zu einer räumlichen und zeitgleichen Wahrnehmung der Musik führt. Diese Überlegungen haben meinen Interpretationsansatz geprägt, in der Hoffnung, dass der Hörer erkennen möge, dass bei beiden Komponisten analytische Präzision und Ausdruck, strenge Struktur und eine uneingeschränkte Romantik Hand in Hand gehen.

Das Webern-Konzert erklingt auf dieser CD vor dem Brahms-Konzert, weil wir zwangsläufig vom jüngsten Werk, das der Gegenwart am nächsten ist, auf die Vergangenheit zurückblicken, und nur durch diese wechselseitige Spiegelung von Gegenwart und Vergangenheit können wir beide interpretieren und die Zukunft vorbereiten.

Weberns Konzert für neun Instrumente, Op. 24 (1934) und Brahms’ Klavierkonzert Nr. 2 in B-Dur, Op. 83 (1881) sind Werke, die einen Titel und eine tiefe Verbundenheit mit der österreichischdeutschen Tradition Beethovens teilen. Dem Hörer werden jedoch nicht die Gemeinsamkeiten auffallen, sondern die deutlichen Unterschiede. Am offensichtlichsten ist dieses in der Tonsprache zu erkennen. Die von Brahms scheint sehr weit von Weberns Modernismus entfernt zu sein. Es handelt sich auch um unterschiedliche Konzerttypen: Brahms schreibt sein Konzert für einen Solisten und Orchester, während Webern ein Ensemble von neun Instrumenten verwendet, aus dem manchmal kleinere Gruppen hervortreten.

Dennoch sind es die Verbindungen zwischen diesen Werken, die ihre Gegenüberstellung auf dieser CD so aufschlussreich machen. Beide erforschen ihr eigenes Identitätsgefühl und enthalten eine tief sitzende Zweideutigkeit darüber, was sie sind und wie wir sie anhören sollten.

Die kritische Reaktion auf Brahms’ Zweites Klavierkonzert wurde von Fragen des Genres dominiert. Zum Teil wurden diese Diskussionen durch den schieren Umfang des Werkes ausgelöst – es ist eines der längsten Klavierkonzerte überhaupt, in vier Sätzen statt der üblichen drei strukturiert. Die Debatte bezog sich auch auf die Art von Musik, die Brahms in diesem Werk verwendete: Seine thematische und motivische Arbeit deutete auf symphonisches Denken hin, man empfindet es aber wie eine Symphonie, die nur zufällig einen Klaviersolisten hat. Daneben gab es einen anderen Ansatz, der von Wagner angeführt

wurde und Brahms’ symphonische Schreibweise als kammermusikalisch bezeichnete: eine Hausmusik, die für mehr Instrumente und größere Aufführungsräume erweitert wurde. Der Solist des Zweiten Klavierkonzerts übernimmt daher mehrere Rollen: die des Pianisten in einer thematischen Struktur symphonischen Ausmaßes und als Kammermusiker, der eher Teil des Ensembles ist als von ihm getrennt.

Weberns Konzert ist auch kammermusikalisch.

Er geht sogar noch weiter als Brahms, indem er sich auf das thematische Material konzentriert.

Während Brahms die Klaviervirtuosität in einen breiteren symphonischen Kontext stellt, verzichtet Webern gänzlich auf konventionelle Virtuosität und konzentriert sich auf das Wesentliche des musikalischen Materials. Durch diese vorrangig thematische Verarbeitung besitzen beide Werke auch einen symphonischen Charakter. Obwohl die Klangfarbe wichtig ist, wird sie immer in den Dienst des thematischen Materials gestellt.

Während es die Kritiker waren, die die Gattungsreinheit des Brahms-Konzerts in Frage stellten, schien Webern von Anfang am Genre von Op. 24 zu zweifeln. Seine ersten Skizzen deuten auf ein Orchesterstück (Ouvertüre) hin. Erst später dachte er an ein Klavierkonzert oder ein Konzertstück. Es gibt sogar Hinweise darauf, dass er anfangs über ein Werk mit Gesang und Text nachdachte, bevor es sich als rein instrumental entpuppte.

Das Genre ist nicht der einzige Bereich, in dem diese Werke mehrdeutig sind. Beide Komponisten 15

bevorzugen offene Formen, und beide verstehen es, Themen und Motive ineinander zu verstricken, was dem musikalischen Ablauf eine grundlegende Fluidität verleiht. Diese spezifische Technik ist eine augenfällige Gemeinsamkeit beider Komponisten, die dafür bekannt sind, Musik zu schreiben, die höchst ausgefeilt und abstrakt ist. Sowohl bei Brahms als auch bei Webern verbirgt sich dahinter jedoch oft eine eher persönliche Vorgehensweise, und jedes dieser Werke hat eine interessante Verbindung zu außermusikalischen Elementen.

In Weberns Musik zeigt sich dieser Hintergrund in seinen Skizzen. Dort wird das Anfangsstadium eines neuen Werks oft durch Bezüge zur Landschaft, zur Familie und insbesondere zu Orten mit starken persönlichen Bindungen wie den Gräbern seiner Eltern angedeutet. Der Mittelsatz von Op. 24 wird in den Skizzen mit der Begräbnisstätte der Mutter in Schwabegg in Verbindung gebracht. Persönliche Assoziationen finden sich auch im dritten Satz von Brahms, der Bezüge zu Clara Schumann und Anspielungen auf seine eigenen Lieder enthält.

Brahms und Webern beziehen sich also beide auf eine wichtige Frau in ihrem Leben, in einer intimen und zarten Musik, die gleichzeitig von Melancholie und Trauer geprägt ist. In diesen Momenten liegt der emotionale Kern dieser Werke, unabhängig von der Größe und Erhabenheit von Brahms oder dem prägnanten Modernismus von Webern. ***** Webern begann sein Konzert 1931, geriet aber nach nur 25 Takten in eine Sackgasse. Erst drei Jahre später nahm er das Werk wieder auf und

vollendete es. Dies waren entscheidende Jahre in Weberns Karriere. Er hatte endlich Anerkennung als Dirigent und Komponist gefunden, aber alles änderte sich 1933 mit dem Aufstieg der Nazis in Deutschland, als sowohl die Dirigententätigkeit als auch die Aufführungen seiner Kompositionen allmählich eingestellt wurden. Webern hatte nun mehr Zeit zum Schreiben, aber der öffentliche Aspekt seiner Karriere brach zusammen.

Das Konzert gehört zu einer Gruppe von Instrumentalwerken, die Webern schrieb, nachdem er sich der Technik der Zwölftonmusik zugewandt hatte. Es erlangte in den 1950er Jahren wegen seiner reinen Konstruktionen Berühmtheit (oder auch zweifelhaften Ruf), und seine Werke wurden von den Komponisten der Nachkriegsavantgarde bis ins kleinste Detail analysiert. Einer der Reize für die neue Generation bestand darin, dass im hier besprochenen Stück die zugrunde liegende Zwölftonreihe aus einem einzigen Dreitonmotiv besteht, das auf vier verschiedene Arten dargestellt wird. Dies gab Webern die Möglichkeit, die tiefe, fast zwanghafte Einheit zu erreichen, nach der er sich sehnte. Die Deutlichkeit der Reihe – ihre strukturelle Perfektion – mag einer der Gründe für die Schwierigkeiten sein, das Stück nach den ersten 25 Takten zu vollenden. Er brauchte Zeit, um herauszufinden, wie diese starke Einheit des Materials zu einer ausdrucksstarken Musik werden könnte.

Der erste Satz stellt das Rohmaterial des Werks mit vier Dreitonmotiven vor, die von den Bläsern als einleitende Fanfare angekündigt werden. Das 16

Klavier antwortet darauf mit einer ähnlichen Gruppe von Motiven. Während des gesamten Satzes funkeln diese Dreitonmuster mit großer Klarheit in Texturen mit ständig wechselnden instrumentalen Farben und rhythmischen Nuancen.

Während der erste Satz voller raffinierter Rhythmen und Tempi ist, reduziert der zweite Satz die verwendeten Werte auf Viertel- und halbe Noten.

Die Musik sieht sehr streng aus, aber sie klingt persönlich und innerlich, verbunden mit Weberns tiefer Bezugnahme auf den Ort des Grabes seiner Mutter in Schwabegg. Das Klavier spielt während des gesamten Satzes mit Paaren von Zweitonakkorden, die sich wie eine Barkarole auf und ab bewegen.

Die weiteren Instrumente kommunizieren über winzige Melodiefragmente, manchmal nur eine einzige Note, die sich durch die Interaktion mit dem durchlaufenden Klavier zu einer fließenden Linie verbinden. Die Expressivität der Musik wird durch die häufigen Bezeichnungen calando und schließlich morendo (beides bedeutet verklingend) besonders hervorgehoben.

Das Werk beginnt mit einem Dialog, der in seiner Intimität dem Webern-Konzert nicht unähnlich ist. Das Klavier antwortet auf das Thema des Solohorns, das dann von einer kleinen Gruppe von Holzbläsern fortgesetzt wird, bevor eine ausgedehnte KlavierPassage das volle Orchester einleitet. Erst jetzt deutet das Stück die Weite eines großen Konzerts an. Das Hornsolo erinnert an eine Landschaft, aber wie bei Webern hat die Musik nichts Bildhaftes an sich; die Anspielung geht in der strukturellen Verarbeitung des Materials auf.

Das Scherzo des zweiten Satzes ist leidenschaftlich und ernst, stark auf die thematische Entwicklung gerichtet. Es steht in dramatischem Kontrast zu der intimeren Welt des dritten Satzes. Hier bildet ein Solocello einen Gegenpol zum Klavier, und der Pianist übernimmt eindeutig sowohl die Rolle des Kammermusikers als auch die des Solisten.

spricht und aus der gleichen Zeit wie das Konzert stammt.

Wie Webern wählt Brahms für seinen Schlusssatz einen leichteren Ton, und die Beziehung zwischen Solist und Orchester nähert sich der eines herkömmlichen Konzerts an. Die thematische Logik setzt sich mit dem gleichen Grad an Transformation und Durchführung in einer Form fort, die eine Sonate mit der Verspieltheit eines Rondos verbindet. ***** Die Kunst der thematischen Variation ist sowohl für Brahms als auch für Webern grundlegend. In diesen beiden Werken nutzen beide Komponisten das Medium Konzert, um Musik zu schaffen, die sich zwischen dem Abstrakten und dem Persönlichen, zwischen der Intimität der Kammermusik und der Logik der Sinfonie, zwischen der Erfahrung einer realen Landschaft und der inneren Vision des musikalischen Geistes bewegt.

PINA NAPOLITANO ist durch ihren Lehrer Bruno Mezzena eine Enkel-Studentin von Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli. Nach dem Studium bei Giusi Ambrifi in ihrer Heimatsstadt Caserta trat sie in die Musikakademie von Pescara ein, wo sie in Klavier-Solo-Performance und in Klaviermusik des 20. Jahrhunderts mit Bruno Mezzena graduierte. Sie ist mit zahlreichen Orchestern in Italien und im Ausland aufgetreten (laVerdi di Milano, Liepāja Symphony, Colibrì Ensemble, Lithuanian National Symphony, Facade Ensemble, New Vienna International).

Zu ihrer Diskografie gehören Brahms the Progressive (Vol. 1), „zugleich eindringlich und verführerisch” (Michael Church); Schönberg: Complete Piano Works (in der engeren Auswahl für die Sinfini „Disc of the Year” 2012); Elegy, „ein Beweis dafür, dass Zwölftonmusik sowohl melodisch als auch bewegend sein kann” (Graham Rickson), „großartiger Brahms, gleichauf mit Gilels” (5* International Piano Magazine), ausgezeichnet mit dem Record Geijutsu und Five Diapasons; und zuletzt Tempo e Tempi. MODESTAS PITRĖNAS, einer der führenden litauischen Dirigenten, wurde im Herbst 2015 Chefdirigent und künstlerischer Leiter des LNSO. Von 2009 bis 2014 war er Chefdirigent der Lettischen Nationaloper (LNO) und von 2006 bis 2011 des Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra. Seit August 2018 ist er Chefdirigent des Operntheaters und Sinfonieorchesters St. Gallen (Schweiz).

Pitrėnas wurde eingeladen, an den nationalen Opernhäusern Litauens, Lettlands, Polens, Russlands, Deutschlands und Finnlands zu dirigieren, darunter das Große Theater in Warschau, die Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf, das Bolschoi-Theater in Moskau, die St. Petersburger Philharmonie und die Deutsche Oper in Berlin. Im Jahr 2014 wurde Wagners Rienzi unter seiner Leitung zu einem der wichtigsten Ereignisse in Riga, der Kulturhauptstadt Europas 2014. Pitrėnas hat über 15 CDs mit Chor- und Sinfoniemusik aufgenommen. Er studierte Dirigieren an der Litauischen Akademie für Musik und Theater und an der Universität Mozarteum Salzburg. Derzeit ist er Assistenzprofessor der Dirigierabteilung an der LAMT und erscheint häufig als Jurymitglied bei verschiedenen internationalen Wettbewerben.

Neben vielen anderen Dirigierwettbewerben hat Pitrėnas den ersten Preis und die Goldmedaille beim siebten Grzegorz-Fitelberg-Dirigierwettbewerb in Kattowitz (Polen, 2003) gewonnen und wurde mit einem Sonderpreis der Schlesischen Philharmonie ausgezeichnet. Im Jahr 2012 wurde er mit der höchsten Auszeichnung Litauens, dem litauischen Nationalpreis für Kultur und Kunst, geehrt. Für seinen Beitrag zur lettischen Musikkultur wurde er mit mehreren Musikpreisen und dem Anerkennungskreuz, einer staatlichen Auszeichnung Lettlands, ausgezeichnet. 2015 verlieh die gemeinsame Jury der Baltischen Staaten in Riga ihren Preis für Kunst an Pitrėnas. Im Jahr 2019 wurde er mit dem Offizierskreuz des Ordens für Verdienste um Litauen ausgezeichnet.

DAS LITAUISCHE NATIONALE SYMPHONIEORCHESTER (LNSO), eines der kultiviertesten und bekanntesten Orchester Litauens, wurde 1940 vom Komponisten, Dirigenten und Pianisten Balys Dvarionas gegründet.

Von 1964 bis 2015 wurde es von Juozas Domarkas geleitet, und seit Herbst 2015 ist Modestas Pitrėnas sein künstlerischer Leiter und Chefdirigent. Robertas Šervenikas ist der stellvertretende Dirigent, so wie Juozas Domarkas sein Ehrendirigent.

Das Orchester gibt jährlich etwa 50 Konzerte in der Litauischen Nationalphilharmonie und auf anderen Bühnen in Litauen und unternimmt ausgedehnte Auslandstourneen. Es besuchte viele europäische Länder, Japan, Südamerika und Südkorea und konzertierte in einigen der bedeutendsten Konzertsäle der Welt, wie dem Musikverein (Wien), den Philharmonien von Köln und Berlin, dem Barbican Centre (London), der Alten Oper (Frankfurt), den Berwaldhallen und dem Rathaus in Stockholm, dem Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), der Metropolitan und der Suntory Hall (Tokio), der Festival Hall (Osaka), dem National Centre for the Performing Arts (Mumbai), dem Cultural Centre of Thailand und vielen anderen. Das LNSO trat auch bei renommierten Festivals wie dem Schleswig-Holstein-Festival, Musica Romantica (Schweiz), Moscow Stars, Russian Winter, Warschauer Herbst, Ludwig van Beethoven Easter Festival (Warschau), Prager Frühling sowie den Festivals in Stresa, Meran, Rheingau, Ludwigsburg und anderen auf.

Das Orchester wurde von großen Dirigenten aller Zeiten wie Balys Dvarionas, Saulius Sondeckis, Jonas Aleksa, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Mstislav Rostropovich, Krzysztof Penderecki, Kurt Masur, Justus Frantz, Cyril Diederich, Neeme Järvi, Christoph Spering, Christoph Eschenbach, Olivier Grangean und Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla geleitet. Das LNSO hat mit vielen berühmten Künstlern, Instrumentalisten und Sängern verschiedener Generationen und Nationalitäten zusammengearbeitet, darunter die Sänger Montserrat Caballé, Jessye Norman, Sergei Larin, Violeta Urmana und Virgilijus Noreika, die Pianisten Emil Gilels, Dmitri Bashkirov, Daniel Pollack, Sergio Tiempo, Freddy Kempf und Mūza Rubackytė, die Geiger Gidon Kremer, Leonid Kogan, Vladimir Spivakov, Julian Rachlin, Sergej Krylov, Philippe Graffin und Arabella Steinbacher, die Cellisten Mischa Maisky, Ivan Monighetti, David Geringas, Danjulo Ishizaka und Mstislav Rostropovich sowie der Bratschist Yuri Bashmet.

Die Grundlage des umfangreichen Repertoires des LNSO bilden Oratorien und Sinfonien aus verschiedenen Epochen sowie zeitgenössische Musik, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf bekannten Werken litauischer Komponisten liegt, von den sinfonischen Dichtungen von Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis bis zu Werken von Balys Dvarionas, Eduardas Balsys, Julius Juzeliūnas, Feliksas Bajoras, Vytautas Barkauskas, Osvaldas Balakauskas, Vidmantas Bartulis, Onutė Narbutaitė, Raminta Šerkšnytė, Anatolijus Šenderovas. Hinzu kommen noch die sinfonischen Erstlingswerke vieler junger Komponisten.

Die Aufnahmen des LNSO wurden in Litauen und im Ausland veröffentlicht (Melodiya, Marco Polo, Col legno, Ella Records, Naxos, Avie Records). Im Herbst 2020 wurde die CD Lamentate von Arvo Pärt mit dem Pianisten Onutė Gražinytė, dem Cellisten Edward King, dem LNSO und dem Dirigenten Modestas Pitrėnas in der Litauischen Nationalphilharmonie und im Vilnius Record Studio aufgenommen und vom deutschen Plattenlabel Accentus Music veröffentlicht. Die Aufnahme erhielt vom angesehenen deutschen Musikmagazin Fono Forum die höchste 5-Sterne-Bewertung. Zu Beginn des Jahres 2021 veröffentlichte die renommierte finnische Plattenfirma Ondine die CD Saudade von Žibuoklė Martinaitytė mit dem LNSO, dem Litauischen Kammerorchester (LCO), dem Dirigenten Giedrė Šlekytė und dem Pianisten Gabrielius Alekna.

Au premier abord, rien n’est plus éloigné du grandiose et majestueux deuxième concerto pour piano de Brahms que le bref et clairsemé Concerto de Webern. Mais en y regardant de plus près, on peut découvrir des similitudes cachées, dans la lignée du célèbre essai de Schoenberg, Brahms le Progressiste. Schoenberg soutenait que Brahms, bien que souvent considéré comme un compositeur académique et passéiste, était en fait un précurseur du mouvement moderniste en musique. Cette idée est particulièrement évidente dans les œuvres tardives de Brahms et a été le fil conducteur d’un de mes albums précédents, intitulé Brahms the Progressive (Vol. 1), incluant opp. 118 et 119 aux côtés de morceaux de Webern et Berg.

Dans ce deuxième volume de la série, je souhaite montrer comment la même affinité est également présente dans des œuvres antérieures de Brahms, comme le deuxième concerto pour piano. Laissant de côté les dimensions et les langages musicaux (clairement longs et tonals chez Brahms et courts et dodécaphoniques chez Webern), on retrouve les mêmes structures profondes et logiques musicales.

Ils abordent les mêmes problèmes de construction musicale : l’utilisation parfaitement économique des formes classiques, la concision absolue (concision ne veut pas dire brièveté), la présentation de la matière musicale dans des formations cristallines, l’élaboration de la matière par un traitement quasi géométrique (renverser, inverser, pivoter, recombiner), conduisant à un sens spatial et synchronique de la musique.

Ces considérations ont nourri ma démarche interprétative, en espérant que l’auditeur puisse percevoir que chez les deux compositeurs la rigueur et l’expression, une structure austère et un romantisme sans réserve, marchent main dans la main.

Dans cet album, le concerto de Webern est présenté avant le Brahms car c’est forcément du plus récent, du plus proche du présent, que l’on regarde le passé, et ce n’est que par cette mise en miroir réciproque du présent et du passé que l’on peut interpréter les deux et préparer l’avenir.

Le Concerto, op. 24 de Webern (1934) et le Concerto pour piano n° 2 de Brahms, op. 83 (1881) sont des œuvres qui partagent un titre et un lien profond avec la tradition beethovénienne austro-allemande. Mais tout auditeur sera frappé non pas par leurs liens mais par leurs différences flagrantes. La plus évidente est la différence d’échelle. Le langage musical de Brahms semble alors très éloigné du modernisme de Webern.

Il s’agit également de différents types de concerto : l’arrangement conventionnel d’un soliste avec orchestre pour Brahms, tandis que Webern utilise un ensemble de neuf instruments d’où émergent parfois de plus petits groupes.

Néanmoins, ce sont les liens entre ces œuvres qui rendent leur juxtaposition sur ce disque si révélatrice.

Les deux explorent leur propre sens de l’identité et contiennent une ambiguïté profonde sur ce qu’elles sont et comment nous devrions les écouter.

La réaction critique au Deuxième Concerto pour Piano de Brahms a été dominée par des questions de genre. Ces discussions ont été provoquées en partie par l’ampleur même de l’œuvre – c’est l’un des concertos les plus longs du répertoire de concert – et par sa structure en quatre mouvements plutôt que les trois habituels. Le débat concernait également le type de musique composée par Brahms dans l’œuvre : sa connexité thématique et motivique suggérait une pensée symphonique. Cela ressemblait à une symphonie dotée d’un soliste au piano. Mais une autre école de pensée, dirigée par Wagner, estimait que l’écriture symphonique de Brahms ressemblait davantage à de la musique de chambre : une musique

domestique, mais adaptée à plus d’instruments et à de plus grands espaces d’interprétation. Le pianiste du Second Concerto joue donc plusieurs rôles : un soliste de concerto engagé dans une structure thématique aux proportions symphoniques, et un chambriste faisant partie de l’ensemble plutôt que d’en être séparé.

Le Concerto de Webern est aussi de la musique de chambre. Il va encore plus loin que Brahms en se concentrant sur le matériel thématique. Si Brahms place la virtuosité pianistique dans un contexte symphonique plus large, Webern évite complètement la virtuosité conventionnelle pour se concentrer sur l’essence du matériau musical. Dans cette hiérarchisation du traitement thématique, les deux œuvres sont également symphoniques. Bien que la couleur instrumentale soit importante, elle est toujours au service du matériau thématique.

Alors que ce sont les critiques qui ont mis en doute la pureté générique du concerto de Brahms, Webern semblait dès le départ incertain quant à la nature finale de l’op. 24. Ses premières esquisses suggèrent un Orchesterstück (Ouvertüre). Ce n’est que plus tard qu’il le considérera comme un Concerto pour piano ou un Konzertstück. Il existe même des preuves qu’il pensait y inclure des voix et un texte avant que la pièce n’émerge comme un concerto purement instrumental.

Le genre n’est pas le seul domaine d’ambiguïté que partagent ces œuvres. Les deux compositeurs se délectent des formes qui peuvent être comprises de multiples façons et tous deux sont habiles à faire se confondre les thèmes et les motifs, créant une fluidité 27

fondamentale à la musique. Une telle technique signale une connexion évidente, s’agissant de deux compositeurs réputés pour écrire une musique très travaillée et abstraite. Cependant, pour Brahms comme pour Webern, cela cache souvent une réponse plus personnelle, et chacune de ces œuvres possède un lien intéressant avec des éléments extra-musicaux.

Dans la musique de Webern, cet arrière-plan se révèle dans ses esquisses. Là, les premières étapes d’une nouvelle œuvre sont souvent indiquées par des références au paysage, à la famille et surtout à des lieux aux liens personnels forts comme les tombes de ses parents. Le mouvement médian de l’op. 24 est associé dans des croquis à Schwabegg, où sa mère a été enterrée. Les associations personnelles sont également apparentes dans le troisième mouvement de Brahms qui contient des références à Clara Schumann et des allusions aux propres chants de Brahms. Ainsi, Brahms et Webern font tous deux référence à une femme importante dans leur vie, dans une musique d’intimité et de tendresse, teintée de mélancolie et de chagrin. Le noyau émotionnel de ces œuvres réside dans ces moments, indépendamment de la taille et de la grandeur du Brahms ou du modernisme incisif du Webern. ***** Webern a commencé son Concerto en 1931 mais s’est retrouvé dans une impasse après seulement 25 mesures. La pièce ne fut achevée qu’après qu’il y revienne trois ans plus tard. Ce furent des années charnières dans la carrière de Webern. Il avait enfin acquis une certaine reconnaissance en tant que chef d’orchestre et compositeur, mais tout a changé en 1933 avec la montée des nazis en Allemagne lorsque

la direction d’orchestre et les interprétations de ses compositions ont progressivement cessé. Webern avait plus de temps pour écrire, mais l’aspect public de sa carrière était de facto terminé.

Le Concerto fait partie d’un groupe d’œuvres instrumentales que Webern a écrites après avoir adopté la technique du sérialisme à 12 notes. Il acquit une certaine renommée (ou notoriété) dans les années 1950 pour sa pureté de construction et fut analysé dans les moindres détails par les compositeurs de l’avant-garde d’après-guerre. L’un des attraits pour la nouvelle génération était que la série de 12 notes sur laquelle la pièce était basée comprenait un seul motif de trois notes présenté de quatre manières différentes.

Cela a fourni à Webern les moyens d’atteindre l’unité profonde, presque obsessionnelle, à laquelle il aspirait.

La netteté de la série – sa perfection structurelle – peut être l’une des raisons pour lesquelles il a eu du mal à terminer la pièce après les 25 mesures initiales. Il avait besoin de temps pour explorer comment cette puissante unité de matériau pouvait devenir une musique expressive.

Le premier mouvement introduit la matière brute de l’œuvre avec quatre motifs de trois notes annoncés dans les instruments à vent comme une fioriture d’ouverture. Le piano y répond avec un groupe similaire de motifs. Tout au long du mouvement, ces motifs à trois notes scintillent avec une grande clarté, dans des textures de couleur instrumentale et de nuance rythmique en constante évolution.

Alors que le premier mouvement est plein de changements subtils de rythme et de tempo, le deuxième mouvement réduit les valeurs rythmiques 28

utilisées aux noires et minimes. La musique semble très austère, mais elle sonne personnelle et intérieure, liée à la profonde réaction de Webern au site de la tombe de sa mère à Schwabegg. Le piano joue tout au long du mouvement avec des paires d’accords à deux notes, qui vont et viennent comme une barcarolle.

Les autres instruments ont une conversation de minuscules fragments de mélodie, parfois juste une seule note, réunis en une ligne fluide par interaction avec la continuité du piano. La qualité expressive de la musique est soulignée par les marques fréquentes de calando et enfin de morendo (les deux signifiant s’éteindre).

Le mouvement final revient à une présentation kaléidoscopique plus évidente des motifs de base à trois notes, mais maintenant les rythmes sont ludiques, presque dansants. Chaque motif rythmique court est régulier, mais les accents et les motifs accentués sont souvent déplacés de manière engageante et surprenante. ***** Brahms a entamé son Deuxième Concerto pour Piano en 1878 et, comme Webern, l’a mis de côté pour d’autres projets avant de l’achever en 1881. L’œuvre s’ouvre sur un dialogue dont l’intimité n’est pas sans rappeler le Concerto de Webern. Le piano répond au thème du cor solo qui est ensuite poursuivi par un petit groupe de vents, avant qu’un long passage pour piano solo n’introduise l’orchestre au complet. Ce n’est qu’à ce point que la pièce suggère pleinement l’espace public d’un grand concerto. Le solo de cor évoque le

paysage, mais, comme Webern, il n’y a rien de pictural dans la musique ; l’allusion est subsumée dans le fonctionnement structurel du matériau.

Le scherzo du deuxième mouvement est passionné et sérieux, avec une grande concentration sur le développement thématique. Il contraste radicalement avec l’univers plus intime du troisième mouvement. Ici, un violoncelle seul sert de repoussoir au piano, et le pianiste est clairement autant chambriste que soliste.

La qualité personnelle de la musique est confirmée par des allusions au chant Todessehenen, op. 86, n° 6, mettant en musique un texte d’amour non partagé, qui date de la même époque que le Concerto.

Comme Webern, Brahms adopte un ton plus léger pour son mouvement final et la relation entre soliste et orchestre est plus proche de celle d’un concerto conventionnel. La logique thématique se poursuit, avec le même niveau de transformation et de développement, dans une forme qui combine la direction d’une sonate avec le jeu d’un rondo. ***** L’art de la variation thématique est fondamental à la fois pour Brahms et Webern. Dans ces deux œuvres, chaque compositeur utilise le médium du concerto pour créer une musique qui oscille entre l’abstrait et l’intime, entre l’intimité de la musique de chambre et la logique de la symphonie, entre l’expérience du paysage réel et la vision intérieure de l’esprit musical.

PINA NAPOLITANO est, à travers son professeur Bruno Mezzena, une grande élève de Michelangeli. Après avoir étudié avec Giusi Ambrifi dans sa ville natale de Caserte, elle est sortie diplômée en Interprétation pour Piano Solo et Musique pour Piano du XXe siècle avec Mezzena à Pescara. Elle s’est produite avec plusieurs orchestres en Italie et à l’étranger (la Verdi di Milano, Liepāja Symphony, Colibrì Ensemble, Lituanien National Symphony, Facade Ensemble, New Vienna International).

Sa discographie comprend Brahms the Progressive (Vol. 1), « à la fois puissant et séduisant » (Michael Church) ; Schoenberg: Complete Piano Works (présélectionné comme « Disque de l’année » 2012 Sinfini); Elegy, « preuve que la musique dodécaphonique peut être à la fois mélodique et émouvante » (Graham Rickson), « du grand Brahms, au niveau de Gilels » (5* International Piano Magazine), récompensé du « Record Geijutsu » et des Cinq Diapasons ; et plus récemment Tempo e Tempi. Ce dernier a été sélectionné comme « Meilleur album classique contemporain » par le Sunday Times 2020, décrit comme « ... brillamment exécuté... enregistré de manière vivante... vigoureux mais incroyablement précis », ainsi qu’un « album provocateur et courageux » (5* BBC Music Magazine), dans lequel «... Elle a obtenu deux licences de l’Université de Naples “L’Orientale”, en philologie classique et slavistique, puis un doctorat en slavistique. Elle est la traductrice et l’auteur de nombreux ouvrages de et sur la poésie russe, dont I Taccuini di Marina Cvetaeva avec Voland (Premio Italia-Russia 2014), Osip Mandel’štam: i Quaderni di Mosca avec Firenze University Press en 2016, et en 2021 Mandel’štam : Quaderni di Mosca avec Einaudi Editore et Marina Cvetaeva : Ultimi Versi avec Voland. Elle a enseigné au Conservatorio Santa Cecilia de Rome, à l’Instituto Gaetano Braga de Teramo, au Conservatoire Torrefranca de Vibo Valentia et enseigne actuellement au Conservatorio Giovanni Battista Martini de Bologna.

MODESTAS PITRĖNAS, l’un des plus grands chefs d’orchestre lituaniens, est devenu chef principal et directeur artistique du LNSO à l’automne 2015. Il a été chef principal de l’Opéra national de Lettonie (LNO) de 2009 à 2014 et chef principal de l’Orchestre symphonique de la ville de Kaunas de 2006 à 2011, et est depuis août 2018 chef principal de l’Opéra et de l’Orchestre symphonique de Saint-Gall (Suisse).

Pitrėnas a été invité à diriger dans les théâtres d’opéra nationaux de Lituanie, de Lettonie, de Pologne, de Russie, d’Allemagne et de Finlande, notamment le Grand Théâtre de Varsovie, le Deutsche Oper am Rhein de Düsseldorf, le Théâtre Bolchoï de Moscou, la Philharmonie de Saint-Pétersbourg et le Deutsche Oper de Berlin. En 2014, Rienzi de Wagner est devenu sous sa direction l’un des événements phares de Riga – Capitale européenne de la culture 2014.

Pitrėnas a enregistré plus de 15 albums de musique chorale et symphonique. Il a étudié la direction d’orchestre à l’Académie lituanienne de musique et de théâtre et à l’Université Mozarteum de Salzbourg.

Il est actuellement professeur adjoint au département de direction d’orchestre du LAMT, et officie souvent en tant que membre du jury dans divers concours internationaux. Outre de nombreux autres concours de direction, Pitrėnas a remporté le premier prix et la médaille d’or au septième concours de direction Grzegorz Fitelberg à Katowice (Pologne, 2003) et a reçu un prix spécial de l’Orchestre philharmonique de Silésie. Il a reçu en 2012 la plus haute distinction de Lituanie, le Prix national de la culture et de l’art de Lituanie. Pour sa contribution à la culture musicale lettone, il a reçu plusieurs prix de musique lettons et la Croix de reconnaissance, une décoration d’État de la Lettonie. En 2015, à Riga, le jury mixte de l’Assemblée baltique lui a décerné le prix de l’Assemblée baltique pour les arts. En 2019, il a été décoré de la Croix d’officier de l’Ordre du mérite de Lituanie.

L’ORCHESTRE SYMPHONIQUE NATIONAL DE LITUANIE (LNSO), l’un des orchestres lituaniens les plus distingués et les plus réputés, a été créé en 1940 par le compositeur, chef d’orchestre et pianiste Balys Dvarionas. De 1964 à 2015, il a été dirigé par Juozas Domarkas et, depuis l’automne 2015, Modestas Pitrėnas en est le directeur artistique et le chef principal. Robertas Šervenikas est le deuxième chef de l’orchestre, et Juozas Domarkas est le chef honoraire.

L’orchestre présente chaque année environ 50 concerts dans le Hall philharmonique national de Lituanie et sur d’autres scènes en Lituanie, et effectue de nombreuses tournées à l’étranger. Il a visité de nombreux pays européens, le Japon, l’Amérique du Sud et la Corée du Sud, et a donné des concerts dans certaines des plus prestigieuses salles de concert au monde, telles que Musikverein à Vienne, les salles philharmoniques de Cologne et de Berlin, le Barbican Centre à Londres, l’Alte Oper de Francfort, le Berwaldhallen et l’hôtel de ville de Stockholm, le Concertgebouw d’Amsterdam, le Metropolitan et le Suntory Hall de Tokyo, le Festival Hall d’Osaka, le National Centre for the Performing Arts de Mumbai, le Cultural Centre of Thailand et bien d’autres encore. Le LNSO s’est également produit dans des festivals prestigieux, tels que le Schleswig-Holstein, Musica Romantica en Suisse, les Moscow Stars, l’Hiver russe, l’Automne de Varsovie, le Festival de Pâques Ludwig van Beethoven à Varsovie, le Printemps de Prague et les festivals de Stresa, Merano, Rheingau, Ludwigsburg et ailleurs.

L’orchestre a été dirigé par d’importantes personnalités historiques et maîtres de renommée mondiale, tels que Balys Dvarionas, Saulius Sondeckis, Jonas Aleksa, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Mstislav Rostropovich, Krzysztof Penderecki, Kurt Masur, Justus Frantz, Cyril Diederich, Neeme Järvi, Christoph Spering, Christoph Eschenbach, Olivier Grangean et Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, entre autres. La base du riche répertoire du LNSO se compose d’oratorios et de symphonies de différentes époques, ainsi que de musique contemporaine moderne, en mettant l’accent sur les œuvres renommées de compositeurs lituaniens, des poèmes symphoniques de Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis aux œuvres de Balys Dvarionas, Eduardas Balsys, Julius Juzeliūnas, Feliksas Bajoras, Vytautas Barkauskas, Osvaldas Balakauskas, Vidmantas Bartulis, Onutė Narbutaitė, Raminta Šerkšnytė, Anatolijus Šenderovas, ainsi que les premières symphonies de nombreux jeunes compositeurs.

À l’automne 2020, le CD Lamentate d’Arvo Pärt avec le pianiste Onutė Gražinytė, le violoncelliste Edward King, le LNSO et le chef d’orchestre Modestas Pitrėnas a été enregistré au Lituanien National Philharmonic Hall et au Vilnius Record Studio et publié par le label allemand Accentus Music. Les critiques du célèbre magazine musical allemand Fono Forum ont attribué à cet enregistrement le score le plus élevé de 5 étoiles. Au début de l’année 2021, la prestigieuse maison de disques finlandaise Ondine a sorti le CD Saudade de Žibuoklė Martinaitytė avec le LNSO, l’Orchestre de chambre de Lituanie (LCO), le chef d’orchestre Giedrė Šlekytė et le pianiste Gabrielius Alekna.
