ENG Mozart on a mandolin?

“The orator and the musician have, at bottom the same aim in regard to both the preparation and the final execution of their productions, namely to make themselves masters of the hearts of their listeners, to arouse or still their passions, and to transport them now to this sentiment, now to that”.

Johann Joachim Quantz This recording is a result of a long-lasting relationship. For more than two decades, our dialogues have taken place under different hats, that of teacher-student, composerperformer, as well as two artists making and performing music together in various fields. In the 20th century, the mandolin made a comeback, returning to the forefront of the stage as a classical instrument, and nowadays many composers are interested in writing for it as a solo instrument, taking advantage of its special timbre.

Mozart himself was familiar with the mandolin, which had blossomed during the Baroque period, and he even gave it a solo in Don Giovanni in the canzonetta ‘Deh, vieni alla finestra’, but the lack of a large classical solo repertoire encourages most players to turn to the violin literature for material. Although it is a plucked string instrument, the mandolin has a clear similarity to the violin. The identical tuning allows performance of the same repertoire without the need for further adaptation. The bow of the violinist is replaced by the plectrum on the mandolin and long notes are usually played as tremolo, adding extra emotional value.

For our first album together, we chose four beloved Mozart sonatas which perfectly suit the tone-colour of the mandolin. This is a world-premiere recording of these sonatas on the mandolin. We wanted to bring to life the fresh nature of this music, as though it had just been written. After a comprehensive and intense study of the score, our final goal was to bring the music to its essential first creation, just like folk musicians, trying to return to the first sensations that the music creates, reacting to each change in the musical drama and avoiding the routine of these frequently performed pieces. We hope that we will be able to communicate these varied emotions and reach you, the listeners.

Described as the “Paganini of the mandolin” by the Jerusalem Post, Shmuel Elbaz is an award-winning mandolin artist and conductor, and one of the most versatile musicians to emerge from Israel. He performs with and conducts all the major Israeli orchestras including the Israel Philharmonic. Elbaz was the first Israeli to bring the mandolin to prominence as a classical instrument. His world-premiere recording of the Bach Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin performed on a mandolin raised great interest and was broadcast widely. His interest in encounters between Western and non-Western musical cultures has led to many collaborations; he often collaborates with composers and has performed many pieces dedicated to him. For over a decade, Elbaz was Music Director of the Israeli Andalusian Orchestra Ashdod, during which time the orchestra was awarded the prestigious Israel Prize for Lifetime Achievement. Hundreds of his orchestral arrangements have been performed and recorded by many orchestras, ensembles and singers. Elbaz was a lecturer at some of the leading academic institutes in Israel, and he founded and served as Director of the Jeanne and Bennet Tanenbaum Music Conservatory in Netivot. He started his musical education at the Samuel Rubin Music Conservatory in Beer-Sheva in mandolin under the legendary Simcha Nathanson, and graduated from the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance and the Sweelinck Conservatoire of Music in Amsterdam under the guidance of Mendi Rodan, Roland Kieft and Peter Eötvös.

Award-winning Israeli pianist and composer Asaf Kleinman has been praised as a “master of the keyboard” (Jerusalem Post). Russian pianist Nikolai Petrov called him a “rare musician and pianist”, and Hungarian pianist Tamás Vásáry said, “he has the power to make the audience listen to him”. Since his 2004 debut at Moscow’s Musical Kremlin Festival, Kleinman has performed globally as a soloist with orchestras, and as a chamber musician and recitalist. His repertoire ranges from early Baroque to contemporary music, and his concert appearances have been broadcast on TV and radio. He has collaborated with many composers, some of whom dedicated their pieces to him, as well as with rock and folk musicians.

Many of Kleinman’s pieces and arrangements have been performed and recorded. He is hailed as an exceptional improviser. Born in 1986, Kleinman began studying piano and composition aged seven, and later studied under Dmitri Bashkirov at Madrid’s Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía.

Mozart settled in the cultural centre of Vienna in 1781, swiftly establishing a reputation as the city’s finest keyboardist. His first Viennese publication, issued as Op. 2 in December 1781, was a set of six keyboard and violin sonatas, KV 296 and KV 37680. The Sonata No. 17, KV 296 had been composed slightly earlier, in 1778, when Mozart was in Mannheim. The order of the instruments in the title – keyboard then violin – is significant: the violin was still regarded as secondary, embellishing the more substantial piano part. Increasingly, however, Mozart had sought to balance the relationship between the musical protagonists in his chamber works, creating a greater level of dialogue and equality – and, for the listener, musical interest.

This sense of balance was in part inspired by the music of Dresden Kapellmeister Joseph Schuster (1748-1812).

Mozart encountered Schuster’s accompanied divertimentos of 1777 when he was in Munich, and was struck by Schuster’s emphasis on the equality of the instruments, an innovative approach at the time. Mozart’s six sonatas for keyboard and violin, KV 301-06, were (like KV 296) composed while Mozart and his mother, Maria Anna, travelled to Mannheim and Paris in 1777 and 1778. They were published there later in 1778 as Mozart’s Op. 1, Nos. 1-6, the title page featuring a dedication to Maria

Elisabeth, Electress of the Palatinate, after whom the set has gained the nickname, the “Palatine Sonatas”.

The influence of Schuster’s music when writing these works was acknowledged by Mozart in a letter written to his father, Leopold, dated 6 October 1777: “I send my sister [Nannerl] herewith six duets for clavicembalo and violin by Schuster, which I have often played here. They are not bad. If I stay on I shall write six myself in the same style, as they are very popular here. My main object in sending them to you is that you may amuse yourselves à deux.”

Hearing these works on mandolin and piano allows us a rare opportunity to listen to them afresh. The tuning of the violin and the mandolin is the same, so it is natural that mandolin players should seek out violin works as a means of increasing their repertoire. Yet in the choice of these particular Mozart sonatas, things go a little deeper. As we have seen, when Mozart composed these works, the relationship between violin and keyboard was in flux; the ‘accompanimental’ role of the piano in relation to a soloist was yet to be established, its dominance generally placing the other instrument in a more decorative role. In the 19 th century, the tables would be turned, and displays of virtuosity from the violin would frequently 6

be supported by a more subservient piano part.

With the works on this album, we may enjoy sonatas composed during that pivotal stage in Western music history when the two protagonists are treated as essentially equal. This relationship lends itself to a duo of mandolin and piano, their strings plucked and struck respectively – not the easiest combination to balance. The piano could so easily drown out the mandolin, yet in Mozart’s mature violin sonatas that sense of equality enables this pairing to flourish, not least because he was writing for the lighter ‘clavicembalo’ (harpsichord) rather than the piano. The mandolin naturally lends itself to decorating the keyboard part, but in these works it is also given aural space in which to come to the fore.

The mandolin would have been known to Mozart through its use in Baroque works, such as the 1725 Mandolin Concerto by Vivaldi. The mandolin as we know it was developed in Naples in the 1740s, and because it is tuned in fifths like a violin it was embraced by amateur musicians across Europe. A number of fêted Italian mandolin players toured Europe teaching and performing, increasing the instrument’s fame. In Paris the mandolin became particularly popular with the aristocracy, fuelled by its frequent presence at the Concert Spirituel and by some 85 volumes of mandolin music published

there during this time. Mandolin serenades became a fashionable feature in operas, including Paisiello’s Il barbiere di Siviglia (1782), Salieri’s Axur (1788), and, most celebrated of all, Mozart’s Don Giovanni (1787), in which it is given a solo during the canzonetta, ‘Deh, vieni alla finestra’.

Mozart’s Sonata No. 22 in A major, KV 305 is the penultimate in the set of six to which he alluded in his letter to Leopold. This work was composed in Paris, shortly after Mozart and his mother arrived there in the spring of 1778. The visit was, in other respects, disastrous: not only did Mozart fail to find the employment Leopold craved for him, but both men suffered the huge loss of Anna Maria when she died suddenly on 3 July, aged 57. It is not certain when in relation to this tragedy Mozart composed the Sonata No. 22, but in any case it can be dangerous to read too much into the relationship between biography and music; Mozart was a professional musician and although some of his music reflects external events, this is not always the case. The genial and untroubled nature of this work does not hint at any recent trauma but, on the other hand, Mozart did sometimes write works of almost childlike innocence in the aftermath personal tumult, perhaps losing himself in the comfort of music which evoked something of what he had lost. In any case, each 7

of this work’s two movements opens with the main theme articulated in unison by both instruments.

The second movement consists of a theme and variations, with a particularly lyrical fourth variation.

The Sonata No. 18 in G major, KV 301 is the first of Mozart’s Op. 1 Sonatas, although it follows the Sonata No. 17, KV 296 (which was issued as part of his Op. 2). All but the last of the six sonatas are in two movements, and the Sonata No. 18 sets this precedent with an Allegro at once vigorous and charming, with imitative moments between the instruments enhancing the sense of equal dialogue between the two. This is followed by a rondo during which a minor-key episode allows the mandolin a moment of genuine independence from the piano.

Mozart’s Sonata No. 21 in E minor, KV 304 stands out as the only one of the set in a minor key, and for its dark-hued nature, haunting and otherworldly. Paper dating has shown that the Allegro was composed in Mannheim, whereas the second movement, a Tempo di Menuetto of poignant fragility, was written in Paris. Some commentators have linked the work’s troubled nature with the move between the two cities: Mozart left his beloved Aloysia Weber behind in Mannheim, and it is possible that his feelings of bereavement were poured into this work and into the

similarly dramatic Piano Sonata in A minor, KV 310.

Although it was published separately, the Sonata No. 17, KV 296 was written in Mannheim in 1778 during the same journey which produced the six sonatas, KV 301-6. Unlike all but the last of those works, this sonata is in three movements. The score is dated 11 March, three days before Mozart and his mother set off for Paris, and is dedicated to “Mademoiselle Therese”, a reference to Thérèse Pierron, a pupil of Mozart’s and stepdaughter of Privy Court Councillor Pierron, at whose house the Mozarts had resided during their stay in Mannheim.

The work opens with both instruments outlining a bold descending arpeggio of humorous vulgarity, wittily answered by dainty piano writing. The central Andante sostenuto is a fine example of Mozart’s ability to use material of warmth and tenderness with an undercurrent of melancholy to create music of almost heartbreaking simplicity, and the sonata is rounded off with a rondo of intricate elegance.

Seit mehr als zwei Jahrzehnten finden unsere Dialoge unter verschiedenen Aspekten statt, wie z.B. als Lehrer-Schüler, als Komponist-Interpret, oder auch wie zwei Künstler, die zusammen in unterschiedlichen Bereichen Musik machen und aufführen. Im 20. Jahrhundert erlebte die Mandoline ein Comeback und kehrte als klassisches Instrument an die vorderste Front des Konzertsaals zurück. Heutzutage haben viele Komponisten die Mandoline als Soloinstrument wiederentdeckt und nutzen ihre besondere Klangfarbe.

Mozart selbst war mit der Mandoline vertraut, die im Barock ihre Blütezeit hatte, und gestand ihr sogar in Don Giovanni ein Solo in der Canzonetta zu: „Deh, vieni alla finestra“, doch das Fehlen eines großen klassischen Solo-Repertoires führt dazu, dass die meisten Interpreten auf Material für die Geigenliteratur zurückgreifen. Obwohl es sich um ein Zupfinstrument handelt, hat die Mandoline eine deutliche Ähnlichkeit mit der Violine. Die identische Stimmung ermöglicht die Wiedergabe desselben Repertoires ohne weitere Arrangements. Für unsere erste gemeinsame CD haben wir vier beliebte Mozart-Sonaten ausgewählt, die perfekt zur Klangfarbe der Mandoline passen. Die Aufnahme dieser Sonaten für die Mandoline ist eine Weltpremiere. Wir wollten die frische Natur dieser Musik zum Leben erwecken, als sei sie gerade geschrieben worden. Nach einem umfassenden und intensiven Studium der Partitur bestand unser letztes Ziel darin, die Musik zu ihrer ursprünglichen Form zu bringen, ähnlich wie Folk-Musiker, die versuchen, zu den ersten Empfindungen zurückzukehren, die die Musik erzeugt, und auf jede Veränderung im musikalischen Ablauf zu reagieren, um eine Routine bei diesen häufig aufgeführten Stücken zu vermeiden. Von der Jerusalem Post als “Der Paganini der Mandoline” beschrieben, ist Shmuel Elbaz ein preisgekrönter Mandolinen-Interpret und Dirigent und einer der vielseitigsten Musiker, die aus Israel hervorgegangen sind. Mozart ließ sich 1781 im kulturellen Zentrum Wiens nieder und etablierte sich rasch als renommiertester Pianist der Stadt. Seine erste Wiener Publikation, herausgegeben als Op. 2 im Dezember 1781 bestand aus sechs Klavier- und Violinsonaten, KV 296 und KV 376-80. Die Sonate Nr. 17, KV 296 war etwas früher komponiert worden, als Mozart 1778 in Mannheim war. Die Reihenfolge der Instrumente im Titel – erst Klavier, dann Violine – ist signifikant: Die Violine wurde immer noch als zweitrangig betrachtet und verschönerte den umfangreicheren Klavierpart. Zunehmend hatte Mozart jedoch versucht, die Beziehung zwischen den Protagonisten in seinen Kammermusikwerken auszugleichen, um ein höheres Maß an Dialog und Gleichheit zu schaffen und so das musikalische Interesse des Zuhörers zu steigern.

Dieses Bedürfnis nach Ausgeglichenheit wurde zum Teil von der Musik des Dresdner Kapellmeisters Joseph Schuster (1748-1812) inspiriert. Mozart stieß auf Schusters Divertimenti mit Begleitung, als er sich 1777 in München aufhielt, und war beeindruckt von Schusters Betonung der Gleichwertigkeit der Instrumente, einem damals innovativen Ansatz. Mozarts sechs Violinsonaten, KV 301-06, wurden (wie auch KV 296) komponiert, während Mozart und seine Mutter Maria Anna 1777 und 1778 nach Mannheim und Paris reisten. Sie wurden dort später 1778 als Mozarts Op. 1, Nr. 1-6 veröffentlicht; das Titelblatt mit einer Widmung an Maria Elisabeth, Kurfürstin der Pfalz, nach welcher das Werk den Beinamen die „Pfälzer Sonaten”, erhalten hat.

Der Einfluss von Schusters Musik beim Schreiben dieser Werke wurde von Mozart in einem Brief an seinen Vater Leopold vom 6. Oktober 1777 bestätigt: “Ich schicke meiner schwester hier 6 Duetti à Clavicembalo e Violino von schuster. Ich habe sie hier schon oft gespiellet. sie sind nicht übel. wen ich hier bleibe, so werde ich auch 6 machen, auf diesen gusto, dan sie gefallen sehr hier. ich schicke sie ihnen hauptselich nur, damit sie sich in Zweÿen Divertiren können.“ Diese Werke nun mit Mandoline und Klavier zu hören, gibt uns die seltene Gelegenheit, sie ganz neu zu erfahren.

Die Stimmung von Violine und Mandoline ist die gleiche, daher ist es verständlich, dass Mandolinenspieler nach Violinwerken suchen, um ihr Repertoire zu bereichern.

Bei der Auswahl dieser speziellen Mozart-Sonaten liegen die Dinge jedoch etwas anders. Wie wir gesehen haben, war die Beziehung zwischen Violine und Klavier noch im Fluss, als Mozart diese Werke komponierte. Die „begleitende“ Rolle des Klaviers in Bezug auf einen Solisten musste noch festgelegt werden, wobei gewöhnlich die Dominanz des anderen Instruments eine eher dekorative Rolle einnahm. Im 19. Jahrhundert wendete sich das Blatt, und die Virtuosität der Geige wurde häufig von einem eher untergeordneten Klavierpart unterstützt.

Mit den Werken auf dieser CD können wir uns an Sonaten erfreuen, die während dieser entscheidenden Phase der 12

westlichen Musikgeschichte komponiert wurden, als man die beiden Interpreten im Wesentlichen gleich behandelte.

Diese Beziehung bietet sich für ein Duo für Mandoline und Klavier an, deren Saiten jeweils gezupft und geschlagen werden - nicht die einfachste Besetzung der Balance wegen.

Das Klavier könnte so die Mandoline leicht übertönen; in Mozarts reifen Violinsonaten jedoch erscheinen beide Instrumente gleichwertig, nicht zuletzt deshalb, weil er für das weniger dominante „Clavicembalo” (Cembalo) anstatt für das Klavier schrieb. Die Mandoline eignet sich natürlicherweise zum Untermalen der Klavier-Stimme, aber in diesen Werken wird ihr auch ein akustischer Spielraum zugestanden, in dem sie in den Vordergrund treten kann.

Die Mandoline dürfte Mozart durch seine Verwendung in barocken Werken wie dem 1725er Mandolinenkonzert von Vivaldi bekannt gewesen sein. Die Mandoline, wie wir sie kennen, wurde in den 1740er Jahren in Neapel entwickelt, und da sie wie eine Geige in Quinten gestimmt ist, wurde sie von Laienmusikern in ganz Europa begeistert angenommen. Eine ganze Reihe von berühmten italienischen Mandolinenspielern tourte durch Europa, um zu unterrichten und zu spielen, was den Ruhm des Instruments merklich steigerte. In Paris wurde die Mandoline besonders bei der Aristokratie beliebt, verstärkt durch ihre häufige Präsenz im Concert Spirituel und durch rund 85 Bände mit Mandolinenmusik, die in dieser Zeit dort veröffentlicht wurden. Mandolinen-

Serenaden wurden zu einem modischen Element in Opern, darunter Paisiellos Il barbiere di Siviglia (1782), Salieris Axur (1788) und die beliebteste, Mozarts Don Giovanni (1787), wo diesem Instrument während der Canzonetta “Deh, vieni alla finestra” ein Solo gewidmet wird.

Mozarts Sonate Nr. 22 in A-Dur, KV 305 ist die vorletzte von sechs, auf die er in seinem Brief an seinen Vater Leopold anspielt. Dieses Werk entstand in Paris, kurz nachdem Mozart und seine Mutter im Frühjahr 1778 dort angekommen waren. Die Umstände dieses Besuchs waren im Übrigen bedrückend: Nicht nur erhielt Mozart die Anstellung nicht, die Leopold für ihn erhofft hatte, sondern beide Männer mussten mit dem schweren Verlust fertig werden, als Anna Maria am 3. Juli im Alter von 57 Jahren plötzlich verstarb. Es ist nicht sicher, ob Mozart die Sonate Nr. 22 unter dem Einfluss dieser Tragödie komponierte, aber auf jeden Fall sollte man der Beziehung zwischen Biografie und Musik nicht zu viel Bedeutung beimessen.

Mozart war ein professioneller Musiker, und obwohl einige seiner Werke persönliche Ereignisse widerspiegeln, ist dies nicht grundsätzlich der Fall. Die geniale und ungetrübte Natur dieses Werkes deutet nicht auf ein neues Trauma hin; andererseits schrieb Mozart unter der Nachwirkung seelischer Erschütterungen manchmal Werke von fast kindlicher Unschuld und verlor sich dabei vielleicht in der tröstenden Wärme der Musik, die etwas von dem heraufbeschwor, das er verloren hatte. In jedem Fall beginnen 13

die beiden Sätze dieser Kompositionen jeweils mit dem Hauptthema, das von beiden Instrumenten im Unisono artikuliert wird. Der zweite Satz besteht aus einem Thema und Variationen, wobei die vierte besonders lyrisch ist.

Die Sonate Nr. 18 in G-Dur, KV 301 ist die erste von Mozarts Opus-1-Sonaten, obwohl sie der Sonate Nr. 17, KV 296 folgt (die als Teil seines Opus 2 herausgegeben wurde).

Alle außer der letzten der sechs Sonaten haben zwei Sätze, und die Sonate Nr. 18 schafft hierfür den Präzedenzfall mit einem Allegro, das zugleich energisch und lieblich ist und durch Imitationen der Instrumente das Gefühl eines gleichberechtigten Dialogs zwischen den beiden verstärkt.

Es folgt ein Rondo, in dem ein Moll-Abschnitt der Mandoline einen Moment echter Unabhängigkeit vom Klavier einräumt.

Mozarts Sonate Nr. 21 in E-Moll, KV 304 zeichnet sich als einzige durch seine Moll-Tonart aus sowie durch seine düstere Natur, bewegend wie aus einer andern Welt. Aus Aufzeichnungen geht hervor, dass das Allegro in Mannheim komponiert wurde, während der zweite Satz, ein Tempo di Menuetto von schmerzlicher Zerbrechlichkeit, in Paris geschrieben wurde. Einige Kommentatoren haben die problematische Natur dieses Werks mit dem Ortswechsel zwischen den beiden Städten in Verbindung gebracht: Mozart ließ seine geliebte Aloysia Weber in Mannheim zurück, und es ist möglich, dass seine Gefühle über den

schmerzlichen Verlust in dieses Werk und in die ähnlich dramatische Klaviersonate in A-Moll, KV 310 einflossen.

Obwohl separat veröffentlicht, wurde die Sonate Nr. 17, KV 296, 1778 in Mannheim während derselben Reise geschrieben, in der die sechs Sonaten KV 301-6 entstanden.

Im Gegensatz zu allen anderen Werken außer dem letzten besteht diese Sonate aus drei Sätzen. Die Partitur ist vom 11. März datiert, drei Tage vor der Abreise von Mozart und seiner Mutter nach Paris, und ist der„Mademoiselle Therese“ gewidmet, mit einem Verweis auf Thérèse Pierron, einer Schülerin Mozarts und Stieftochter des Geheimrats Pierron, in dessen Haus die Mozarts während ihres Aufenthalts in Mannheim gewohnt hatten. Das Stück beginnt mit beiden Instrumenten, die ein kühn absteigendes Arpeggio mit humorvoller Vulgarität umreißen, wortwitzig mit anmutiger Klavierschreibweise beantwortet. Das zentrale Andante sostenuto ist ein gutes Beispiel für Mozarts Fähigkeit, warme und zärtliche Töne mit einer melancholischen Unterströmung zu vermengen, um Musik von beinahe herzzerreißender Einfachheit zu erzeugen. Die Sonate wird mit einem Rondo von komplizierter Eleganz abgerundet.

FRA Mozart à la mandoline ? « L’orateur et le musicien ont, au fond, le même objectif aussi bien pour la préparation que l’exécution finale de leurs productions, à savoir se rendre maîtres du cœur de leurs auditeurs, éveiller ou apaiser leurs passions, et les transporter en l’instant vers ce sentiment ».

Johann Joachim Quantz Cet enregistrement est le résultat d’une longue relation. Depuis plus de deux décennies, nos dialogues se sont déroulés sous différentes guises, celles d’enseignant-étudiant, de compositeur-interprète, ainsi que de deux artistes créant et interprétant de la musique ensemble dans divers domaines. Au XXème siècle, la mandoline a fait un retour en force et reconquis le devant de la scène en tant qu’instrument classique. Aujourd’hui, de nombreux compositeurs s’intéressent à l’écriture pour elle en tant qu’instrument solo, tirant parti de son timbre particulier.

Mozart lui-même connaissait bien la mandoline, qui avait prospéré durant la période baroque. Il lui offrit même un solo dans Don Giovanni dans la canzonetta ‘Deh, vieni alla finestra’. Néanmoins, l’absence d’un vaste répertoire de solo classique incite la plupart des joueurs à se tourner vers l’écriture pour violon comme source de matériel. Bien qu’il s’agisse d’un instrument à cordes pincées, la mandoline présente une forte similitude avec le violon.

L’accordage identique permet l’exécution du même répertoire sans nécessiter d’adaptation supplémentaire. L’archet du violoniste est remplacé par le médiator de la mandoline et les notes longues sont généralement jouées en trémolo, apportant ainsi une valeur émotionnelle supplémentaire. Pour notre premier album ensemble, nous avons choisi quatre sonates populaires de Mozart qui conviennent parfaitement à la couleur du timbre de la mandoline. Il s’agit d’un enregistrement en première mondiale de ces sonates sur mandoline. Nous avons souhaité donner vie à la fraîcheur de cette musique, comme si elle venait d’être écrite. Après une étude complète et intense de la partition, notre objectif final était de rendre à cette musique son essence créative initiale, tout comme les musiciens folkloriques, en essayant de revenir aux premières sensations que la musique peut offrir, en réagissant à chaque changement du drame musical et en évitant la routine de ces pièces fréquemment exécutées.

Décrit comme le « Paganini de la mandoline » par le Jerusalem Post, Shmuel Elbaz est un joueur de mandoline et chef d’orchestre primé, et l’un des musiciens les plus polyvalents en provenance d’Israël. Il joue avec et dirige tous les grands orchestres israéliens, dont le Philharmonique d’Israël.

Elbaz a été le premier Israélien à populariser la mandoline en tant qu’instrument classique. Son enregistrement en première mondiale des sonates de Bach et des Partitas pour violon solo jouées sur une mandoline a suscité un vif intérêt et a été amplement diffusé. Son goût pour les rencontres entre cultures musicales occidentales et nonoccidentales a conduit à de nombreuses collaborations ; il collabore souvent avec des compositeurs et a interprété de nombreuses pièces lui étant dédiées. Pendant plus de dix ans, Elbaz a été Directeur Musical de l’orchestre andalou israélien Ashdod, et a notamment reçu le prestigieux Prix Israélien pour l’ensemble de ses réalisations. Plusieurs centaines de ses arrangements pour orchestre ont été interprétés et enregistrés par de nombreux orchestres, ensembles et chanteurs. Elbaz a été conférencier dans certains des principaux instituts universitaires d’Israël. Il a fondé et a dirigé le Conservatoire de musique Jeanne et Bennet Tanenbaum à Netivot. Il a commencé ses études musicales au conservatoire de musique Samuel Rubin de Beer-Sheva à la mandoline auprès du légendaire Simcha Nathanson, et est diplômé de l’Académie de musique et de danse de Jérusalem et du Conservatoire de musique Sweelinck à Amsterdam, sous l’égide de Mendi Rodan, Roland Kieft et Peter Eötvös.

Le pianiste et compositeur israélien primé Asaf Kleinman a été salué comme un « maître du clavier » (Jerusalem Post). Le pianiste russe Nikolai Petrov l’a qualifié de « musicien et pianiste rare », et le pianiste hongrois Tamás Vásáry a noté qu’il « avait le pouvoir de susciter toute l’attention du public ». Depuis ses débuts en 2004 au Festival Musical du Kremlin de Moscou, Kleinman s’est produit dans le monde entier en tant que soliste avec orchestres, musicien de chambre et récitaliste. Son répertoire va du début du baroque au contemporain, et ses prestations ont été diffusées à la télévision et à la radio. Il a collaboré avec de nombreux compositeurs, dont certains lui ont dédié leurs œuvres, ainsi qu’avec des musiciens de rock et de folk. Plusieurs œuvres et arrangements de Kleinman ont été interprétés et enregistrés. Il est reconnu comme un improvisateur hors pair. Né en 1986, Kleinman a commencé le piano et la composition à l’âge de sept ans, puis a étudié sous la direction de Dmitri Bashkirov à l’Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía de Madrid.

Mozart s’est installé dans le centre culturel de Vienne en 1781 et a rapidement établi sa réputation de meilleur claviériste de la ville. Sa première publication viennoise, intitulée op. 2 en décembre 1781, était un ensemble de six sonates pour clavier et violon, KV 296 et KV 376-80. La Sonate n°17, KV 296, fut composée un peu plus tôt, en 1778, lorsque Mozart séjournait à Mannheim. L’ordre des instruments dans le titre – clavier puis violon – est significatif : le violon était toujours considéré comme secondaire, embellissant la partie de piano plus substantielle. Cependant, Mozart cherchait de plus en plus à équilibrer les relations entre les protagonistes instrumentaux de ses œuvres de chambre, en créant davantage de dialogue et d’égalité - et pour l’auditeur, davantage d’intérêt musical.

Ce sentiment d’équilibre est en partie inspiré par la musique du Kapellmeister de Dresde, Joseph Schuster (1748-1812). En découvrant les divertimentos accompagnés de Schuster de 1777 lors de son séjour à Munich, Mozart fut frappé par l’accent mis par Schuster sur l’égalité des instruments, une approche novatrice à l’époque. Les six sonates pour clavier et violon de Mozart, KV 301-06, ont été composées (tout comme KV 296) lors de son séjour avec sa mère, Maria Anna, à Mannheim et à Paris en 1777 et 1778. Ils y furent publiés plus tard en 1778 sous le titre op. 1, n os 1-6 de Mozart, la page de titre présentant une dédicace à

Maria Elisabeth, Electrice du Palatinat, d’où le surnom de « Sonate palatine » accordé à l’ensemble.

Dans une lettre datée du 6 octobre 1777 adressée à son père Léopold, Mozart reconnaissait l’influence de la musique de Schuster dans l’écriture de ces pièces : « J’envoie à ma sœur [Nannerl] ci-joint six duos pour clavicembalo et violon de Schuster, que j’ai souvent joués ici. Ils ne sont pas sans qualité. Si je reste, je vais en écrire six moi-même dans le même style, car ils sont très populaires ici. Mon but principal en vous les envoyant est que vous puissiez vous amuser à deux. » Ecouter ces œuvres à la mandoline et au piano nous offre la rare opportunité de les redécouvrir. L’accordage du violon et de la mandoline étant le même, les joueurs de mandoline ont souvent tendance à rechercher des pièces pour violon pour accroître leur répertoire.

Pourtant, dans le choix particulier de ces sonates de Mozart, les choses vont un peu plus loin. Comme nous l’avons vu, lorsque Mozart a composé ces œuvres, la relation entre violon et clavier était en mutation ; le rôle « d’accompagnement » du piano par rapport à un soliste n’était pas encore établi, sa domination plaçant généralement l’autre instrument dans un rôle plus décoratif. Au XIXème siècle, la tendance s’inversera et les démonstrations de virtuosité du violon seront 19

fréquemment appuyées par une partie de piano plus subordonnée.

A travers ce disque, nous pouvons apprécier des sonates composées à ce stade crucial de l’histoire de la musique occidentale, lorsque les deux protagonistes sont traités comme deux éléments égaux. Cette relation se prête à un duo pour mandoline et piano, aux cordes respectivement pincées et frappées – ce qui n’est pas la combinaison la plus facile à équilibrer.

Le piano pourrait facilement submerger la mandoline, mais dans ces sonates matures pour violon de Mozart, ce sens de l’égalité permet à cet accord de s’épanouir, notamment parce qu’il écrit pour le clavicembalo (clavecin), instrument plus léger que le piano. La mandoline se prête naturellement à la décoration de la partie de clavier, mais dans ces œuvres, un espace sonore au premier plan lui est également donné.

Mozart connaissait sans doute la mandoline à travers son usage dans des œuvres baroques, telles que le Concerto pour mandoline de 1725 de Vivaldi. La mandoline telle que nous la connaissons a été développée à Naples dans les années 1740 et, parce qu’elle est réglée en quintes comme un violon, elle fut adoptée par des musiciens amateurs à travers toute l’Europe. Plusieurs joueurs de mandoline italiens réputés se sont rendus en Europe pour enseigner et jouer, renforçant ainsi la renommée

de l’instrument. À Paris, la mandoline est devenue particulièrement populaire auprès de l’aristocratie, à travers notamment sa présence fréquente au Concert Spirituel et quelques 85 volumes de musique de mandoline publiés au cours de cette période. Les sérénades de mandoline devinrent à la mode dans les opéras, notamment Il barbiere di Siviglia (1782) de Paisiello, Axur (1788) de Salieri et, le plus célèbre, Don Giovanni (1787) de Mozart, à travers son solo dans la canzonetta ‘Deh, vieni alla finestra’.

La Sonate n°22 en la majeur KV 305 de Mozart, est l’avant-dernière dans le groupe de six auquel il fit allusion dans sa lettre à Léopold. Elle fut composée à Paris, peu de temps après l’arrivée de Mozart et de sa mère au printemps 1778. La visite fut, à d’autres égards, désastreuse : non seulement Mozart ne réussit pas à trouver l’emploi que Léopold lui souhaitait, mais les deux hommes durent subir la perte d’Anna Maria décédée subitement à l’âge de 57 ans. On ne sait pas très bien quand Mozart a composé la Sonate n°22 par rapport à cette tragédie, mais il peut être dangereux de trop lier biographie et musique ; Mozart était un musicien professionnel, et bien qu’une partie de sa musique reflète des événements extérieurs, ce n’est pas toujours le cas. La nature généreuse et sereine de cette œuvre ne laisse présager aucun traumatisme récent, mais Mozart écrivait parfois des œuvres d’une 20

innocence presque enfantine dans le tumulte personnel de l’heure, s’égarant peut-être dans le confort d’une musique évoquant quelque chose de perdu. Quoi qu’il en soit, chacun des deux mouvements de cette œuvre s’ouvre avec le thème principal articulé à l’unisson par les deux instruments. Le deuxième mouvement comporte un thème et des variations, avec notamment une quatrième variation particulièrement lyrique.

La Sonate n°18 en sol majeur, KV 301, est la première des Sonates de l’op.1 de Mozart, bien que suivant la Sonate n°17, KV 296 (publiée dans le cadre de son opus 2). Toutes les sonates sauf la dernière sont en deux mouvements et la Sonate n°8 établit ce précédent avec un Allegro à la fois vigoureux et charmant, avec des moments d’imitation entre les instruments renforçant le sens d’un dialogue égal. S’enuit un rondo au cours duquel un épisode de clé mineure offre à la mandoline un véritable moment d’indépendance par rapport au piano.

La Sonate n°21 en mi mineur KV 304 de Mozart, la seule de l’ensemble dans une tonalité mineure, se distingue par sa nature sombre, envoûtante et surnaturelle. La datation sur papier montre que l’Allegro fut composé à Mannheim, alors que le deuxième mouvement, un Tempo di Menuetto d’une fragilité poignante, fut écrit à Paris. Certains commentateurs ont établi un lien entre la nature troublée de l’œuvre et le passage d’une ville à

l’autre : Mozart a laissé sa bien-aimée Aloysia Weber à Mannheim et il est possible que sa tristesse ait influencé cette pièce ainsi que la dramatique sonate en la mineur, KV 310. (Mozart épousa finalement Constanze, la sœur d’Aloysia.)

Bien que publiée séparément, la Sonate n°17, KV 296, fut écrite à Mannheim en 1778 au cours du même voyage qui a donné les six sonates, KV 301-6. Contrairement à toutes les œuvres sauf la dernière, cette sonate comporte trois mouvements. La partition est datée du 11 mars, trois jours avant le départ de Mozart et de sa mère pour Paris, et est dédiée à « Mademoiselle Thérèse », une référence à Thérèse Pierron, élève de Mozart et belle-fille du Conseiller du Tribunal Privé Pierron, chez qui Mozart avait résidé pendant leur séjour à Mannheim. L’œuvre s’ouvre avec les deux instruments traçant un arpège descendante audacieuse de vulgarité humoristique, auquel répond un geste de piano délicat. L’Andante sostenuto central est un bel exemple de la capacité de Mozart à utiliser un matériau chaleureux et tendre avec un fond de mélancolie pour créer une musique d’une simplicité presque déchirante, et la sonate s’achève par un rondo à l’élégance complexe.
