Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach is to keyboard playing what Pythagoras is to mathematics. An initiator; a visionary who evolved throughout his output whilst retaining much of his father’s legacy, and offering his successors a blueprint for expanding music’s emotional horizons.

The music of C.P.E. Bach opens a door to a new musical era, without turning its back on tradition. A “farewell” (Abschied) that does not deny the past, but on the contrary draws deeply on this heritage. Mozart, Clementi, Beethoven and Haydn would be inspired by this innovative music to build, on these formidable foundations, their most beautiful masterpieces When I first encountered C.P.E. Bach’s “pianistic” writing – the sinuous lines of his Fantasies’ spinning cadences and arpeggios, the dynamic fractures of his phrasings, suspended as if by abstract punctuation, his recitatives barely suggested, or stated as a prayer – I had the feeling of coming across the tangible traces of the beginning of great Classicism. A real discovery!

Along with Muzio Clementi, to whom I dedicated my first album exactly ten years ago, C.P.E. Bach represents our origins, the beginning of the history of the piano, and, quite simply, the beginning of the history of pianists. He gave us a new musical message, imbued with remarkable freedom and an intense style, at once subtle and powerful, sensitive and vigorous. In the same vein as Couperin in France, C.P.E. Bach expressed himself as follows, giving us an insight into his true personality and into the path he was going to set out for his “artistic heirs”: “It seems to me that music should above all move the heart”. Both sound advice and prophecy! Perhaps inevitably, my own “pianistic vision” overlapped naturally with his musical language.

I do not seek originality, but nor do I like the rigidity of rules. I look for fantasy, the inspiration of the moment, as if everything we have learned was only a foundation for music that flows with grace and elegance without constraints, without fakery, and with the sincerity of the heart and mind. Let the piano sing, let the song speak, let speech become music.

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s preferred instrument was a clavichord by Gottfried Silbermann. In 1781, he gave the instrument to his pupil Ewald von Grotthuss, along with the rondo, Abschied von meinem Silbermannischen Claviere (Farewell to my Silbermann clavichord). Grotthuss returned the gift with a rondo of his own. Many will be able to relate to the bittersweet nature of this story: in saying “farewell” (Abschied) to something precious there is the inevitable sense of loss, but also the pleasure in offering tangible encouragement by entrusting someone with a very personal gift. The sense that C.P.E. Bach was musically “passing the baton” reflects the wider significance of his music, which simultaneously drew upon the traditions of the past, especially those of his father, J.S. Bach, whilst looking to the future, paving the way for the Classicism of Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven.

Writing in 1773, the music historian Charles Burney (17261814) acknowledged this significance, writing of C.P.E. Bach, that: “His pieces... will be found, upon a close examination, to be so rich in invention, taste, and learning, that... each line of them... would furnish more new ideas than can be discovered in a whole page of many other compositions”.

Burney also wrote of the quirkier facets of C.P.E. Bach’s style, arguing that his works were “so uncommon, that a little habit is necessary for the enjoyment” of them.

C.P.E. Bach was the second surviving son of J.S. Bach and, along with J.C. Bach (“the London Bach”), has proved to be the most

musically successful of his children. J.C. Bach’s music is clear and refined, largely eschewing his father’s counterpoint and powerful emotional force, but Emanuel Bach went in another direction, with highly charged compositions exhibiting what became known as the empfindsamer Stil (“sensitive style”).

C.P.E. Bach developed this style while he was Principal Harpsichordist at the court of Frederick the Great of Prussia, and then as Music Director of Hamburg’s foremost churches. His musical language is characterised by rhetorical gestures such as swift and frequent shifts in mood, rhythmic juxtapositions, irregular phrasing, widely-spaced melodic leaps, sighing motifs, numerous rests, false endings, and sudden injections of drama.

Indeed, the empfindsamer Stil both built upon and moved away from the precedents set by J.S. Bach and other composers of the Baroque. C.P.E. Bach was well able to compose in a style redolent of the ornate and formal Baroque aesthetic, but whereas many individual movements or pieces of that era tended to focus on one mood or Affekt, with C.P.E. Bach the conscious choice to change atmosphere within a piece heralded a fresh approach. Bach preferred not to focus just on one or two contrasting moods, as many Classical composers would do with the first and second subjects of sonata form, but sought instead to explore a range of quickly-contrasted emotions. This paved the way 5 5

for the more nuanced works of the Classical era, and for the expressive emotional fluctuations of the 19th century.

At the keyboard, C.P.E. Bach is known to have exuded both clarity and lyricism in his performances, often becoming completely absorbed during passages of improvisation. He loved to give extended recitals to visitors, and was famed for his ability to improvise fantasias, the ideal vehicles for the spontaneous empfindsamer Stil, unfolding as though in a stream of consciousness, taking detours into far-flung harmonic realms via whimsical rhythmic and structural flights of fancy.

However, this apparently effortless flow of material is underpinned by solid structural coherence. Emanuel Bach was his father’s son. In his Essay on the True Art of Playing Keyboard Instruments, Bach specified that the performing musician should be able to enter the same emotional state he wishes to inspire in his audience, an empathetic principle reflected in his capacity to evoke or provoke emotions in his compositions. But he also cautioned against exaggeration and mannerisms, balancing the desire for emotive impact with a sense of restraint and taste, and weighted by sound structural devices; for instance, he instructed his students to base their own fantasias on firm harmonic foundations.

C.P.E. Bach’s production of keyboard works was less prolific

after 1770, but he issued six collections of keyboard sonatas in the years which followed: part retrospective, part commercial endeavour. By popular demand, the second collection included rondos, and the remaining volumes included fantasias. Indeed, his rondos proved so popular that Bach considered publishing a separate collection of them. They are often characterised by the recurrence of the main theme in different keys and with some development, showing a sophistication which looks forward to the works of Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven. Whereas Bach’s first keyboard collection features earlier music, volumes two to six are dominated by newer works, marked by a shift in style from the uncompromising dissonances of the early keyboard sonatas to a mellower manner which again has more in common with Haydn and Mozart, and is certainly of comparable quality.

Abschied von meinem Silbermannischen Claviere was not published until 1986, but represents a great example of Bach’s Empfindsamkeit (“sensibility”); its solemn, introspective main theme is contrasted with sunnier interludes and punctuated by dramatic dynamic effects.

The C major Fantasia (Wq. 59/6, H. 284) was composed in 1784 and was published in the following year. It opens with a flourish and a pervasive “cuckoo” motif, and includes sudden harmonic excursions articulated by rapid arpeggiac figures. The expressive Rondo in A minor (Wq. 56/5, H. 262) dates from 1778 and was published in 1780, 6 6

and the Fantasias in A major (Wq. 58/7, H. 278) and F major (Wq. 59/5, H. 279) were both written not long afterwards, in 1782, released in 1783 and 1785 respectively.

Stylistically, the Rondo in D minor (Wq. 61/4, H. 290) of 1786 has many of the hallmarks of the Classical style: elegance and drama held in perfect balance. The C minor Rondo (Wq. 59/4, H. 283), composed only two years earlier, is more in keeping with the mercurial empfindsamer Stil, whereas the Fantasia in F-sharp minor (Wq. 67, H. 300) of 1787, which was not published until 1950, possesses an extraordinary Romanticism quite ahead of its time.

The quirky Rondo in A major (Wq. 58/1, H. 276) was composed in 1782 and published in the following year. It begins with the simple theme, repeated at a louder volume.

The episodes which follow modulate into different keys, creating distinct aural contexts for the recurrent theme – which on occasion feels humorously persistent, a gauche interruption at inopportune moments. The Fantasia in C major (Wq. 61/6, H. 291) of 1786, for all the implicit floridity of

its title, is steadied by a distinctly Classical poise, ending with a delicious cadence. The Rondo in E major (Wq. 57/1, H. 265, 1779) begins with a proud opening theme. There are sudden rests, dramatic gestures and intriguing harmonic excursions, although the bright key of E major lends the piece as a whole a warming, sunny disposition.

Not published until 1938, C.P.E. Bach’s Variations on La folia d’Espagne (an ancient and widely-plundered theme) were written in 1778. The variations run the full gamut of contemporary keyboard styles, from the angularity of the first variation, to spread chords reminiscent of a dulcimer, to the anticipation of both the rigours and the refinement of the Classical style, to spacious drama, imposing chords, and intricate decoration. Yet, after this scintillating array of textures and moods, C.P.E. Bach has one more surprise up his sleeve, and the set culminates in a gesture which Haydn would make his own: a swift, wittily abrupt, conclusion.

In my hometown, in Calabria, there was only one piano teacher. And if one day I pushed the door of their house, it‘s because my mother had been their pupil. She had learned the basics, a few classics. And that was all. Nothing prepared me for a career as a pianist. But this fire, this passion for music was already there. After an adolescence full of doubts, I finally discovered my vocation thanks to an Argentinian teacher, José Lepore. I was 17 and that was the real beginning of my journey with the piano as my travelling companion. Here I was, discovering and taking in the music of Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, exploring Scriabin, Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev; travelling, meeting other musicians and giving my first concerts.

But in order to progress, I felt the need to meet new people, to reach higher musical spheres... To move! Finally, in 1998, I put down my suitcases near Geneva, where I studied with the Argentinian pianist Edith Murano, and later at the Lausanne Conservatory with Christian Favre, who, I believe, revealed my true personality.

Then things accelerated. I perfected my skills for a while with William Grant Naboré, thanks to whom I was able to rub shoulders with great teachers such as Menahem Pressler, Fou Ts‘Ong and Andreas Staier.

At the Vlado Perlemuter Competition in France, pianist Jean François Heisser encouraged me to record my first album. I made four recordings which each represent an essential moment in my musical life. Today, I enjoy interacting with audiences and I cultivate my passion for organising concerts and for teaching.

With Odradek, a new chapter is about to be written in my life and I hope that its first lines, through this disc, are the beginning of a great adventure.

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach est au clavier, ce que Pythagore est aux mathématiques. Un initiateur, un visionnaire qui a évolué tout au long de son œuvre en gardant l‘essentiel de l‘héritage de son père, et en offrant à ses successeurs les clefs pour élargir l‘horizon émotionnel de la musique.

La musique de C.P.E. Bach ouvre une porte sur nouvelle ère musicale, sans pourtant tourner le dos à la tradition. Un adieu (Abschied) qui ne renie pas le passé, mais qui au contraire se nourrit profondément de cet héritage. Mozart, Clementi, Beethoven et Haydn se laisseront inspirer par cette musique innovatrice pour bâtir, sur ces redoutables fondations, leurs plus beaux chefs-d’œuvre.

Lorsque j‘ai regardé pour la première fois son écriture „pianistique“, les lignes sinueuses des cadences et arpèges virevoltants de ses Fantaisies, les fractures dynamiques de ses phrasés, suspendus comme par une ponctuation abstraite, ses récitatifs à peine suggérés ou énoncés comme une prière, j‘ai eu l‘impression de retrouver les traces tangibles du commencement du grand classicisme. Une réelle découverte !

Avec Muzio Clementi, à qui j‘ai consacré mon premier disque il y a précisément dix ans, C.P.E. Bach représente nos origines, le début de l‘histoire du piano, et tout simplement le début de l‘histoire des pianistes. Il nous a livré un nouveau message musical, empreint d‘une liberté surprenante, d‘un style intense, à la fois subtile et puissant, sensible et vigoureux. Dans la même lignée que Couperin en France, C.P.E. Bach s‘est exprimé ainsi, nous donnant une idée de son vrai tempérament et du chemin qu‘il allait tracer pour „sa descendance artistique“ : « Il me semble que la musique devrait avant tout émouvoir le cœur ». C‘est à la fois un conseil avisé et une prophétie ! Ma vision du „jeu pianistique“ s‘est superposée naturellement sur son langage. Comme une évidence.

Je ne cherche pas l‘originalité, mais je n‘aime pas la rigidité des règles. Je cherche la fantaisie, l‘inspiration du moment, comme si tout ce qu‘on avait appris n‘était qu‘un socle pour que la musique puisse couler avec grâce et élégance sans contraintes, sans tricheries, et avec la sincérité du cœur et de l‘esprit. Que le piano soit chant, que le chant soit parole, que la parole devienne musique.

L’instrument préféré de Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach était un clavicorde de Gottfried Silbermann. En 1781, il l’offrit à son élève Ewald von Grotthuss, avec le rondo Abschied von meinem Silbermannischen Claviere (Adieu à mon clavicorde Silbermann). Grotthuss retourna ce geste avec un rondo à lui. Beaucoup seront en mesure de comprendre la nature douce-amère de cette histoire : en disant « adieu » (Abschied) à quelque chose de précieux, on éprouve un sentiment inévitable de perte, mais aussi le plaisir d’offrir des encouragements tangibles en confiant à quelqu’un un cadeau très personnel. L’impression que C.P.E. Bach était musicalement sur le point de « passer le témoin » reflète la signification plus large de sa musique, qui s’appuyait simultanément sur les traditions du passé, en particulier celles de son père, J.S Bach, tout en regardant vers l’avenir pour ouvrir la voie au classicisme de Mozart, Haydn et Beethoven.

En 1773, l’historien de la musique Charles Burney (1726-1814) témoignait de cette dimension en écrivant à propos de son contemporain, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach : « Ses pièces ... après un examen attentif, seront jugées si riches en invention, en goût, et en savoir, que ... chaque ligne d’entre elles ... fournirait bien plus d’idées nouvelles que ce qu’il existe dans une page entière de bien d’autres compositions ». Burney reconnaissait également les facettes les plus insolites du style de C.P.E. Bach, estimant que ses œuvres étaient « si peu communes, qu’une certaine habitude est nécessaire pour leur appréciation ».

C.P.E. Bach était le deuxième fils survivant de J.S. Bach et, avec J.C. Bach (le « Bach de Londres »), s’est avéré le plus musicalement accompli de ses enfants. Alors que la musique de J.C. Bach est claire et raffinée, évitant largement le contrepoint de son père et sa force émotionnelle puissante, Emanuel Bach a choisi une autre direction, avec des compositions très chargées exposant ce qui sera connu sous le nom d’empfindsamer Stil (« style sensitif ») C.P.E. Bach développa ce style alors qu’il était claveciniste principal à la cour de Frédéric le Grand de Prusse, puis Directeur Musical des principales églises de Hambourg. Son langage musical est caractérisé par des gestes rhétoriques tels que des changements d’humeur rapides et fréquents, des juxtapositions rythmiques, des phrasés irréguliers, des sauts mélodiques fortement espacés, des motifs soupirants, de nombreuses pauses, de fausses fins et de soudaines injections de drame.

En effet, l’empfindsamer Stil, s’est à la fois développé et démarqué des précédents créés par J.S. Bach et autres compositeurs du baroque. C.P.E. Bach était capable de composer dans un style évoquant l’esthétique baroque ornementée et formelle, mais alors que de nombreux mouvements ou morceaux de cette époque avaient tendance à se concentrer sur une humeur ou Affekt, avec 11 11

C.P.E. Bach, le choix conscient de changer l’atmosphère au cours d’une pièce annonçait une nouvelle approche. Bach préférait ne pas se concentrer uniquement sur une ou deux ambiances contrastées, comme beaucoup de compositeurs classiques le feraient avec les premier et second sujets de la forme de sonate, mais cherchait plutôt à explorer une gamme d’émotions rapidement contrastées. Cela a ouvert la voie aux œuvres plus nuancées de l’ère classique et aux fluctuations émotionnelles expressives du XIXe siècle.

Au clavier, C.P.E. Bach était connu pour sa clarté et son lyrisme, au point d’être souvent complètement absorbé lors des passages d’improvisation. Il aimait offrir de longs récitals à ses visiteurs, et était célèbre pour sa capacité à improviser des fantasias, le véhicule idéal pour l’empfindsamer Stil spontané, se déroulant comme dans un flot de conscience, prenant des détours vers des domaines harmoniques lointains via des impromptus rythmiques et structurels.

Cependant, ce flux apparemment sans effort est soutenu par une cohérence structurelle solide. Emanuel Bach était le fils de son père. Dans son Essai sur la véritable manière de jouer les instruments à clavier, Bach précise que le musicien interprète doit pouvoir entrer dans le même état émotionnel que celui qu’il souhaite inspirer à son public, un principe empathique reflété dans sa capacité à évoquer ou à provoquer des émotions à travers ses compositions. Mais il a également mis en garde contre l’exagération et le maniérisme, équilibrant

le désir de l’impact émotif avec un sens de la retenue et du goût, et pondéré par de solides dispositifs structurels ; par exemple, il recommandait à ses étudiants de baser leurs propres fantasias sur des bases harmoniques fermes.

La production de pièces pour claviers de C.P.E. Bach fut moins prolifique après 1770, mais il publia six collections de sonates pour clavier dans les années qui suivirent : un exercice à la fois rétrospectif et commercial. À la demande générale, la deuxième collection comprenait des rondos, et les volumes restants comprenaient des fantasias. En effet, ses rondos se révélèrent si populaires que Bach envisagea d’en publier une collection séparée. Ils sont souvent caractérisés par la récurrence du thème principal dans différentes clés et avec un certain développement, exhibant une sophistication anticipant les œuvres de Mozart, Haydn et Beethoven. Alors que la première collection de claviers de Bach présente des morceaux antérieurs, les volumes deux à six sont dominés par des œuvres plus récentes, marquées par un changement de style par rapport aux dissonances intransigeantes des premières sonates pour clavier, vers un style plus harmonieux qui a davantage en commun avec Haydn et Mozart et est certainement de qualité comparable.

Abschied von meinem Silbermannischen Claviere ne fut publié qu’en 1986, mais constitue un excellent exemple de l’Empfindsamkeit (sensibilité) de Bach ; son thème principal solennel et introspectif est contrasté par des interludes plus 13 13

ensoleillés et ponctué d’effets dynamiques dramatiques.

La Fantasia en do majeur (Wq. 59/6, H. 284) a été composée en 1784 et publiée l’année suivante. Elle s’ouvre sur un motif de « coucou » insistant et comprend des excursions harmoniques soudaines articulées par des figures d’arpèges rapides. L’expressif Rondo en la mineur (Wq. 56/5, H. 262) date de 1778 et a été publié en 1780, et les Fantasias en la majeur (Wq. 58/07, H. 278) et en fa majeur (Wq. 59/5, H. 279) furent écrites peu de temps après, en 1782, et publiées en 1783 et 1785 respectivement.

telle une interruption gauche à des moments inopportuns. La Fantaisie en do majeur (Wq. 61/6, H. 291) de 1786, malgré toute la floridité implicite de son titre, est soutenue par un équilibre distinctement classique, et s’achève sur une cadence délicieuse. Le Rondo en mi majeur (Wq. 57/1, H. 265, 1779) commence avec un thème d’ouverture orgueilleux. On y retrouve des silences brusques, des gestes dramatiques et des excursions harmoniques fascinantes, bien que la touche lumineuse du mi majeur donne à l’ensemble de la pièce une atmosphère chaude et ensoleillée.

D’un point de vue stylistique, le Rondo en ré mineur (Wq. 61/4, H. 290) de 1786 présente de nombreuses caractéristiques du style classique : l’élégance et le drame y sont parfaitement équilibrés. Le Rondo en ut mineur (Wq. 59/4, H. 283), composé seulement deux ans plus tôt, est plus en accord avec le mercurial empfindsamer Stil, tandis que la Fantasia en fa dièse mineur (Wq. 67, H. 300) de 1787, jamais publiée avant 1950, possède un romantisme extraordinaire en avance sur son temps. L’excentrique Rondo en la majeur (Wq. 58/1, H. 276) a été composé en 1782 et publié l’année suivante. Il commence par le thème simple, répété à plus haut volume. Les épisodes qui suivent se modulent en différentes clés, créant des contextes sonores distincts pour le thème récurrent – qui parfois se révèle humoristiquement persistant,

Jamais publié avant 1938, les Variations sur la Folia espagnole (un thème ancien et largement pillé) de C.P.E. Bach ont été écrites en 1778. Les variations couvrent toute la gamme des styles de clavier contemporains, de l’angularité de la première variation, aux accords étirés qui rappellent un dulcimer ; de l’anticipation des rigueurs et du raffinement du style classique au drame spacieux, aux accords imposants et à l’ornementation complexe. Pourtant, après ce scintillant tableau de textures et d’humeurs, C.P.E. Bach nous réserve une dernière surprise, et l’ensemble culmine dans un geste que Haydn pourrait faire sien : une conclusion rapide et plaisamment abrupte.

Dans ma ville natale, en Calabre, il n’y avait qu’un seul professeur de piano. Et si un jour j’ai poussé la porte de sa maison, c’est parce que ma mère avait été son élève. Elle avait appris les bases, quelques grands classiques. Et c’est tout. Rien ne me destinait à une carrière de pianiste. Mais ce feu, cette passion pour la musique était déjà là. Après une adolescence parsemée de doutes, je découvre enfin ma vocation grâce à un professeur argentin, José Lepore. J’avais dix-sept ans et ce fut le réel début de mon chemin avec le piano pour compagnon de route. Me voici découvrir et approfondir la musique de Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, découvrir Scriabine, Rachmaninov, Prokofiev, voyager, rencontrer d’autres musiciens, et donner mes premiers concerts.

Mais pour évoluer, je sentais le besoin de faire des nouvelles rencontres, côtoyer des sphères musicales plus hautes… Partir !

Finalement je pose mes valises en 1998 près de Genève, où j’étudie avec la pianiste argentine Edith Murano, et plus tard avec Christian Favre au Conservatoire de Lausanne, qui a, je crois, révélé ma vraie personnalité.

Ensuite les choses se sont accélérées. Je me suis perfectionné pendant quelque temps avec William Grant Naboré, grâce à qui j’ai pu côtoyer, des grands professeurs comme Menahem Pressler, Fou Ts’Ong et Andreas Staier.

Lors de la seule édition du Concours Vlado Perlemuter en France, le pianiste Jean François Heisser m‘incite à enregistrer mon premier disque. Grâce au label Lyrinx, je réalise quatre enregistrements qui représentent chacun un moment essentiel de ma vie musicale. Aujourd‘hui, je me nourris de l’échange avec le public et je cultive ma passion pour l’organisation de concerts, et pour l’enseignement.

Avec Odradek, c’est une nouvelle page de mon histoire qui va s’écrire, et j’espère que les premières lignes, par le biais de ce disque, seront le commencement d’une belle aventure.

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach ist für das Spielen von Tasteninstrumenten das, was Pythagoras für die Mathematik ist. Ein Initiator, ein Visionär, der sich während seines gesamten Schaffens weiterentwickelte, dabei jedoch viel vom Erbe seines Vaters bewahrte.

Damit hat er seinen Nachfolgern den Weg für die Erweiterung des emotionalen Horizontes der Musik bereitet.

Die Musik von C.P.E. Bach öffnet die Tore zu einer neuen musikalischen Ära, ohne der Tradition den Rücken zu kehren. Ein „Abschied“, der die Vergangenheit nicht leugnet, sondern im Gegenteil tief auf dieses Erbe zurückgreift. Mozart, Clementi, Beethoven und Haydn ließen sich von seiner innovativen Musik inspirieren, um auf diesen beeindruckenden Fundamenten ihre schönsten Meisterwerke zu bauen.

Als ich das erste Mal mit C.P.E. Bachs „pianistischer“ Schreibweise in Berührung kam – die gewundenen Linien der verwobenen Kadenzen und Arpeggien seiner Fantasien, die dynamischen Brüche seiner Phrasierungen, wie von abstrakter Zeichensetzung unterbrochen, seine kaum angedeuteten oder wie ein Gebet ausgedrückten Rezitative – hatte ich das Gefühl, auf die greifbaren Anfangsspuren des großen Klassizismus gestoßen zu sein. Eine echte Entdeckung!

Zusammen mit Muzio Clementi, dem ich vor genau zehn Jahren mein erstes Album widmete, repräsentiert C.P.E. Bach unsere Ursprünge, den Beginn der Geschichte des Klaviers – ganz einfach der Geschichte der Pianisten. Er vermachte uns eine neue musikalische Botschaft, durchdrungen von großer Freiheit und einem intensiven Stil, gleichzeitig subtil und kraftvoll, einfühlsam und energisch. In der gleichen Weise wie Couperin in Frankreich, äußerte C.P.E. Bach sich wie folgt und gab uns einen Einblick in seine wahre Persönlichkeit und in den Weg, den er für seine „künstlerischen Erben“ gehen wollte: „Ich glaube, dass Musik vor allem das Herz anrühren sollte“. Dies klingt gleichzeitig wie eine Empfehlung und eine Prophezeiung! Vielleicht deckte sich meine eigene „pianistische Vision“ auf natürliche Weise unbewusst mit seiner musikalischen Sprache.

Ich möchte nicht unbedingt originell sein, aber ich richte mich auch nicht gern nach starren Regeln. Ich suche Fantasie, die Inspiration des Augenblicks, so als ob alles Erlernte nur eine Basis für Musik wäre, die mit Anmut und Eleganz ohne Einschränkungen fließt, ohne Täuschung und mit der Aufrichtigkeit von Herz und Verstand. Lass das Klavier singen, lass das Lied sprechen, lass Sprache zu Musik werden!

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bachs bevorzugtes Instrument war ein Klavichord von Gottfried Silbermann. Im Jahre 1781 übergab er das Instrument seinem Schüler Ewald von Grotthuss zusammen mit dem Rondo Abschied von meinem Silbermannischen Claviere.

Grotthuss erwiderte das Geschenk mit einem eigenen Rondo.

Viele werden sich auf die bittersüße Natur dieser Geschichte beziehen können: Wenn man Abschied von etwas Kostbarem nimmt, empfindet man einerseits das unvermeidliche Gefühl eines Verlusts, andererseits aber auch die Freude zu motivieren, indem man jemandem ein sehr persönliches Geschenk anvertraut.

Das Gefühl, dass C.P.E. Bach musikalisch “die Verantwortung übergab”, spiegelt die breitere Bedeutung seiner Musik wider, die gleichzeitig auf die Tradition der Vergangenheit, insbesondere die seines Vaters J.S. Bach hinweist, und in die Zukunft blickt, in dem sie den Weg für den Klassizismus von Mozart, Haydn und Beethoven ebnet.

Im Jahr 1773 schrieb der Musikhistoriker Charles Burney (17261814) über seinen Zeitgenossen Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach: „Seine Kompositionen... sind bei näherer Betrachtung so erfindungsreich, geschmackvoll und lehrreich, dass... jede Notenlinie... mehr neue Ideen beisteuern würde als eine ganze Seite vieler anderer Kompositionen“.

Burney erkannte auch die eigenartigeren Facetten von Carl Philipp Emanuel Bachs Stil und argumentierte, seine Werke seien „so unkonventionell, dass es einer gewissen Gewöhnung bedürfe, um sie genießen zu können“. C.P.E. Bach war der zweite

überlebende Sohn von Johann Sebastian Bach und erwies sich, zusammen mit Johann Christian Bach („der Londoner Bach“), als das musikalisch erfolgreichste seiner Kinder. J.Ch. Bachs Musik ist klar und edel und vermeidet weitgehend den Kontrapunkt und den kraftvollen emotionalen Stil seines Vaters. C.P. Emanuel Bach aber ging in eine andere Richtung, mit stark gefühlsbetonten Kompositionen, die als empfindsamer Stil bekannt wurden.

C.P.E. Bach entwickelte diesen Stil, während er als hauptsächlicher Cembalist am Hofe Friedrichs des Großen von Preußen und später als Musikdirektor der fünf Hamburger Hauptkirchen tätig war. Seine musikalische Sprache ist geprägt von rhetorischen Gesten wie schnellen und häufigen Stimmungsverschiebungen, rhythmischen Nebeneinanderstellungen, unregelmäßigen Phrasierungen, weit auseinanderliegenden melodischen Sprüngen, seufzenden Motiven, zahlreichen Pausen, offenen Schlüssen und plötzlichen dramatischen Einschüben.

Tatsächlich basierte der empfindsame Stil auf – entfernte sich jedoch gleichzeitig von – den Präzedenzfällen, wie sie von J.S. Bach und anderen Komponisten des Barock eingeführt worden waren. C.P.E. Bach war sehr wohl in der Lage, in einem Stil zu komponieren, der an die kunstvolle und formelle Barockästhetik erinnert. Aber während viele einzelne Sätze oder Stücke dieser Ära dazu tendierten, sich auf eine einzelne Stimmung oder einen Affekt zu konzentrieren, traf C.P.E. Bach die bewusste Entscheidung, die Atmosphäre innerhalb eines Stückes zu verändern und

kündigte so eine neue Perspektive an. Bach zog vor, sich nicht nur auf ein oder zwei kontrastierende Stimmungen zu konzentrieren, wie es viele Klassiker mit dem ersten und zweiten Thema der Sonatenform tun würden, sondern strebte stattdessen nach schnell-wechselnden kontrastreichen Emotionen. Dies ebnete den Weg für die nuancierten Werke der Klassik und für die expressiven emotionalen Schwankungen des 19. Jahrhunderts.

Es ist bekannt, dass Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach bei seinen Aufführungen auf Tasteninstrumenten sowohl Klarheit als auch Lyrik ausstrahlte, und dass er bei seinen Improvisations-Passagen wie entrückt war. Mit Vorliebe gab er ausgedehnte Konzerte und war berühmt für seine Improvisationen, dem idealen Bindeglied zum spontanen, empfindsamen Stil, der sich wie in einem Bewusstseinsstrom auf Umwegen über skurrile rhythmische und strukturelle Fantasieflüge zu weit entfernten harmonischen Gefilden aufschwingt.

Dieser scheinbar mühelose Materialfluss wird jedoch durch eine solide strukturelle Kohärenz untermauert. Emanuel Bach war der Sohn seines Vaters: In seinem Versuch über die wahre Art das Clavier zu spielen hatte Bach festgelegt, dass ein Musiker in der Lage sein sollte, sich in den emotionalen Zustand zu versetzen, den er bei seinem Publikum erreichen möchte; ein empathisches Prinzip, das sich in seiner Fähigkeit, mit seinen Kompositionen Gefühle hervorzurufen, widerspiegelt. Aber er warnte auch vor Übertreibung und Manierismen und glich das Verlangen nach emotionaler Wirkung mit einem Gefühl von Zurückhaltung

und Geschmack sowie durch solide strukturelle Richtlinien aus. Zum Beispiel wies er seine Studenten an, ihre eigenen Fantasien auf feste harmonische Fundamente zu gründen.

Nach 1770 wurden C.P.E. Bachs Klavierwerke seltener, in den darauf folgenden Jahren jedoch gab er sechs Sammlungen von Klaviersonaten heraus: teils retrospektiv, teils aus kommerziellen Gründen. Auf Nachfrage enthielt die zweite Sammlung Rondos und die übrigen Bände Fantasien. In der Tat erwiesen sich seine Rondos als so populär, dass Bach eine separate Sammlung von ihnen veröffentlichte. Sie sind oft gekennzeichnet durch die Wiederholung des Hauptthemas in verschiedenen Tonarten und Durchführungen, die durch ihre Raffinesse auf die Werke von Mozart, Haydn und Beethoven vorausschauen lassen.

Während Bachs erste Klaviersammlung frühere Musik enthält, sind die Bände 2 bis 6 von neueren Werken geprägt. Sie zeichnen sich durch einen Stilwechsel von den kompromisslosen Dissonanzen der frühen Tasteninstrument-Sonaten zu einer milderen, von Haydn und Mozart wieder verwandten Form aus und sind sicherlich von vergleichbarer Qualität.

Bachs bevorzugtes Instrument war ein Clavichord von Gottfried Silbermann. 1781 schenkte er das Instrument seinem Schüler Ewald von Grotthuss zusammen mit dem Rondo Abschied von meinem Silbermannischen Claviere. Hauptthema werden sonnige Zwischenspiele gegenübergestellt, unterbrochen von dramatisch-dynamischen Effekten.

Die C-Dur-Fantasie (Wq. 59/6, H. 284) entstand 1784 und wurde im folgenden Jahr veröffentlicht. Sie beginnt mit einem stets wiederkehrenden „Kuckuck“-Motiv und enthält überraschende harmonische Exkurse, die durch schnelle Arpeggien artikuliert werden. Das ausdrucksstarke Rondo in a-Moll (Wq. 56/5, H. 262) stammt aus dem Jahr 1778 und wurde 1780 veröffentlicht, und die Fantasien in a-Dur (Wq. 58/7, H. 278) und f-Dur (Wq. 59/5, H. 279) wurden beide kurz danach, 1782, 1783 bzw. 1785 herausgegeben.

Stilistisch weist das Rondo in d-Moll (Wq. 61/4, H. 290) von 1786 viele Merkmale des klassischen Stils auf: Eleganz und Dramatik in perfekter Balance. Das c-Moll-Rondo (Wq. 59/4, H. 283), das nur zwei Jahre zuvor komponiert wurde, entspricht eher dem lebhaften empfindsamen Stil, während die Fantasie in fis-Moll (Wq. 67, H. 300) von 1787, die erst 1950 veröffentlicht wurde, mit ihrem außergewöhnlichen Romantizismus ihrer Zeit weit voraus ist. Das eigenwillige Rondo in a-Dur (Wq. 58/1, H. 276) wurde 1782 komponiert und im folgenden Jahr veröffentlicht. Es beginnt mit einem einfachen Thema, das lauter wiederholt wird. Die folgenden Episoden modulieren in verschiedene Tonarten und schaffen unterschiedliche akustische Zusammenhänge für das immer wiederkehrende Thema – das sich gelegentlich humorvoll

aber hartnäckig vordrängt; eine verwunderliche Unterbrechung zu einem unpassenden Zeitpunkt. Die Fantasie in c-Dur (Wq. 61/6, H. 291) von 1786 wird trotz ihres blumigen Titels in einer ausgeprägten klassischen Weise gefestigt und endet mit einer köstlichen Kadenz. Das Rondo in e-Dur (Wq. 57/1, H. 265, 1779) beginnt mit einem prägnanten Anfangsthema. Darin erscheinen plötzliche Pausen, dramatische Gesten und faszinierende harmonische Exkurse, obwohl die hellere Tonart von e-Dur dem Stück insgesamt eine warme, sonnige Stimmung verleiht.

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bachs 1778 geschriebenen Variationen über die Folie d’Espagne (ein altes und weidlich ausgeschlachtetes Thema) wurden erst 1938 veröffentlicht. Die Variationen umfassen die gesamte Skala zeitgenössischer Stile auf Tasteninstrumenten, von der Steifheit der ersten Variation über gespreizte Akkorde, die an ein Hackbrett erinnern, bis hin zur Vorwegnahme der Strenge und der Feinheit des klassischen Stils und zu weitläufiger Dramatik, imposanten Akkorden und komplizierten Verzierungen. Doch nach dieser schillernden Anordnung von Texturen und Stimmungen schüttelt C.P.E. Bach noch eine weitere Überraschung aus dem Ärmel, und der Satz gipfelt in einer Geste, die Haydn sich zu eigen gemacht hätte: ein schneller, witzig-abrupter Schluss.

In meiner Heimatstadt in Kalabrien gab es nur eine Klavierlehrerin, und ich fand nur deswegen zu ihr, weil meine Mutter ihre Schülerin gewesen war. Sie hatte dort einige Grundkenntnisse erworben, ein paar Klassiker kennengelernt. Und das war alles.

Nichts hat mich auf eine Karriere als Pianist vorbereitet. Aber dieses Feuer, diese Leidenschaft für Musik war schon da. Nach einer Jugend voller Zweifel entdeckte ich schließlich meine Berufung dank eines argentinischen Lehrers, José Lepore. Ich war 17, und das war der eigentliche Beginn meiner Reise mit dem Klavier als Begleiter. Hier war ich, entdeckte und erfasste die Musik von Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin und erkundete Skrjabin, Rachmaninoff und Prokofjew. Ich konnte reisen, andere Musiker treffen und meine ersten Konzerte geben.

Aber um voranzukommen, fühlte ich die Notwendigkeit, neue Menschen kennenzulernen, höhere musikalische Sphären zu erreichen... Mich zu bewegen, zu verändern! Schließlich stellte ich 1998 meine Koffer in der Nähe von Genf ab, wo ich bei der argentinischen Pianistin Edith Murano studierte, und später am Konservatorium in Lausanne bei Christian Favre, der, wie ich glaube, meine wahre Persönlichkeit erkannte.

Dann beschleunigten sich die Dinge. Mit William Grant Naboré habe ich eine Zeitlang meine Fähigkeiten perfektioniert, dank derer ich mit großartigen Lehrern wie Menahem Pressler, Fou Ts‘Ong und Andreas Staier in Kontakt kommen konnte.

Beim Vlado-Perlemuter-Wettbewerb in Frankreich ermutigte mich der Pianist Jean François Heisser, mein erstes Album aufzunehmen. Ich habe vier Aufnahmen gemacht, die jeweils einen bedeutsamen Abschnitt in meinem Musikleben darstellen.

Heute genieße ich es, mit dem Publikum zu interagieren, und ich pflege meine Leidenschaft, Konzerte zu organisieren und zu unterrichten.

Mit Odradek wird ein neues Kapitel in meinem Leben geschrieben und ich hoffe, dass seine ersten Zeilen durch diese CD der Anfang eines großen Abenteuers sind.
