ENG “Nothing right can be accomplished in art without enthusiasm”, wrote Schumann in one of his rules of musical life, showing as romantic and passionate a vision of music as of life.

Enthusiasm, ‘en theos’: union with the divine, inspiration; but also the loss of control, folly, or the irrepressible drive to give your all when doing anything, making every goal achievable and every obstacle surmountable. We are very close here to the concept behind the Colibrì Ensemble, an orchestra which has been able to bring together prestigious musicians and soloists in a project which is unique not only for its artistic quality, but also for its founding ideals and even organisational structure.

The orchestra was born from a children’s fairytale. Colibrì is the small and energetic protagonist who champions one of the world’s most propulsive fuels: participation! Precisely for this reason and since the very beginning we have striven for a democratic approach, even when facing large instrumentations or more complex scores.

Alexander Lonquich has enriched our path with his deep knowledge of the score, his inexhaustible pursuit of detail; his ability both to capture the poetry behind every single note, and to live music on stage as a metaphysical experience.

Andrea Gallo Colibrì Ensemble, Artistic Director Art and particularly music have always been by my side at different times of my life, but I never imagined that through meeting one of my patients I would have the opportunity to witness the birth of an orchestra and to help bring it to life.

Listening to and watching it perform on stage enchants me every time. I perceive something wonderful and supernatural in the different sensibilities, passions and emotions that come together and merge into music.

I am a doctor, and not a musician... but I am sure that an orchestra is able to improve humankind and the society in which we live!

Listening to the opening bars of Burgmüller’s Second Symphony, we are immediately struck by a curious similarity.

The first five notes, although distributed across a ternary rhythm, anticipate two key moments of Schumann’s late creativity: the second movement of the Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, and the theme of the so-called Geistervariationen (Ghost Variations), his last work, composed in February 1854 and completed at the Endenich clinic. Regarding the first quote, we will never know if it is a conscious allusion, since Schumann had completed the Scherzo of his own symphony only two years earlier, in 1851. It is known that Schumann on that occasion was not willing to add the last missing movement himself; we are told: “he was not able to.

Sitting down to write he was overcome by the feeling that Norbert Burgmüller was standing behind him to pick up the pen himself”. It is striking that, writing the Geistervariationen, Schumann was convinced that he had received the theme as a gift from the spirits of Schubert and Mendelssohn, having already paired the name of Schubert with that of Burgmüller a few years after his premature death.

Up to this point, we have been detailing clear influences on Schumann. But what of the fact that, from the second bar of the second movement of Burgmüller’s symphony, played by the bassoons, a “premonition” repeatedly appears of the main

theme of Schumann’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra? As far as we know, Schumann, composing this work, was not yet aware of Burgmüller’s unfinished score. This must be some kind of congeniality between the two, or indeed among the three, as the second movement, which is characterised by an impassible staccato of violins and violas providing the base of a slow marching rhythm as an accompaniment for the first oboe’s melancholic solo, inevitably recalls ‘The Great’ Symphony, D. 944, composed by Schubert in 1825, but discovered by Schumann himself only in 1838; two years after the death of Burgmüller, who therefore could not have known it. It feels like the fragments of a common language bond the three composers together, following the model of the imaginary League of David yearned for by Schumann.

Premonitions also seem to lead to Brahms’ Second Symphony.

Tonality, the intense work on themes, although less mature and focussed in Burgmüller, and the foundational colour of the piece (with the predominance of horns in some places, for example in the Trio within the Scherzo), are all elements that make it seem very close. Did Brahms know about this work? Preparing this CD, we loved travelling through this world of affinities and unknowing references.

Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor was begun in 1841.

The previous September, Robert had married his pianistcomposer wife, Clara, who described the occasion in her diary as “the fairest and most momentous day of my life”.

Robert set about writing for Clara a Phantasie movement for piano and orchestra, which he completed in just 16 days. It was performed privately on 13 August 1841, but no publisher could be found, which may in part have prompted Schumann to expand the work, adding two further movements to create a more conventional concerto.

These two additional movements followed in 1845: an Intermezzo and a finale (the finale written first), linked by a transitional passage to create a seamlessness between the two movements. It is remarkable how unified the resultant concerto sounds; one might never guess that there had been any break in composition. Clara gave the concerto’s public première in Leipzig in 1846, and it became a core part of her concert repertoire.

Despite its apparent wealth of ideas, the concerto’s first movement is almost monothematic; almost, because there are other key motifs audible, but the first theme dominates and, transposed into C major, takes the position of ‘second subject’, after which it is varied. The work opens with a

lyrical woodwind choir led by the oboe, answered by the piano. Schumann’s deftly-managed orchestral texture is characterised by blustery swells, creating a quintessentially Romantic sonority, and the woodwinds heard at the outset – oboe and clarinet especially – continue to be prominent in their conversational exchanges with the soloist. Schumann wrote the cadenza himself, revealing his emphasis on musical poetry rather than virtuosity for its own sake – a priority sustained throughout the work, and one which he had explicitly discussed with Clara when attempting to write an earlier Piano Concerto in D minor in 1839.

The Intermezzo and finale grow organically from the first movement’s main theme, the ascending quavers of which characterise both the dialogue between soloist and orchestra in the slow movement, and the piano’s opening gambit in the finale. In the Intermezzo Schumann takes the opening movement’s conversational principle even further, creating a sense of intimate dialogue enhanced by the delicate, almost chamber-like treatment of his orchestral forces. This movement is a perfect example of Schumann’s style: unashamedly sentimental, almost childlike in its quality of innocent, sunny detachment, unsullied by worldliness or anxiety (a longed-for state, perhaps, 5 5

for the composer). There are more wistful moments, too; an autumnal sighing the like of which will be heard in years to come in the piano concerti of Brahms.

The Intermezzo tumbles effortlessly into the finale, which was originally designated a Rondo, and although it does not in its final version conform to that structure, there are rondo elements in the recurrence of the soloist’s main theme during the orchestral tuttis. The finale is full of subtle touches: a marching second theme that tested Felix Mendelssohn’s orchestra during rehearsals for the work’s première; irregular phrasing; orchestral anticipations of tutti sections adding a glorious injection of momentum; and a quasi-comical fugato during the central tutti. These ingenious devices reveal a composer at the peak of his powers: there are no perfunctory finale fireworks, but rather a movement of subtle, even quirky good humour and perfectly-judged invention.

The lives of Robert Schumann and Norbert Burgmüller intersect in intriguing ways. Both were born in 1810, and both were plagued by health problems: Schumann by mental illness and Burgmüller by epilepsy. Both men died at a relatively young age: Burgmüller in 1836 and Schumann in 1856. And both spent significant periods of their lives in

Düsseldorf, which is how Schumann came to orchestrate the Scherzo of Burgmüller’s Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 11, unfinished at the time of his premature death.

Schumann even contemplated completing the fourth and final movement as well, but gave up. He did, however, write a heartfelt obituary when Burgmüller died, lamenting that: “Since the early death of Schubert, nothing more deplorable has happened than that of Burgmüller”. Mendelssohn composed a funeral march for Burgmüller, having conducted several of his works, including his Symphony in C minor, Op. 2.

Born into a musical family, Burgmüller came to Düsseldorf in 1831, where his epileptic fits hampered socialising, but where his music grew steadily in stature. His style developed from the Classical refinement inherited from his teacher, Louis Spohr, into Romantic works passionate in nature and generous in scale. His ailing health was not the only reason for the Second Symphony’s incomplete state, however; an apparent attack of writer’s block seems to have inhibited progress. Amalie von Sybel (1798-1847), wife of historian Heinrich von Sybel, wrote to the writer Karl Immermann that the composer had“not been able to find” the remainder of the finale (which ceases after only 58 bars), adding that it was “half comical, half moving, to hear him answer enquiries with the words: ‘It’s not come yet’”.

Burgmüller composed the symphony between 1834 and 1835; its two complete movements were premièred in Düsseldorf on 22 April 1837, conducted by composer-conductor Julius Rietz, and the work was subsequently published in Leipzig in 1864. The Allegro moderato opens in delightfully pastoral vein, undulating between genial lyricism and stormier interjections in a manner reminiscent of Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony, and anticipating Schumann’s Spring Symphony of 1841. The Andante opens with an insistent rhythm in the strings, over which floats a long-breathed oboe solo. The sober atmosphere softens with a shift to the major, accompanied by horns accentuating the symphony’s

pastoral feel; yet the rather sombre mood ultimately prevails.

In contrast, the Scherzo opens with an exhilarating upwards rush of vigorous string-writing, unleashing a movement centred around the tussle between a refined dance, perhaps representing the civilised aspects of humanity, and sudden torrents of sound reflecting the irrepressible forces of Nature. Brahmsian horns evoke the hunt, finding that sweet spot between man and Nature: the point at which they can exist, even for a time, in harmony.

Alexander Lonquich was born in Trier, Germany. In 1977 he won First Prize at the Casagrande Competition dedicated to Schubert. Since then he has performed on the most prestigious stages in Japan, the US and Europe. He has worked with conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Kurt Sanderling, Ton Koopman, Emmanuel Krivine, Heinz Holliger and Marc Minkowski.

He has received numerous critical awards internationally, including “Diapason d’Or”, “Premio Abbiati” and “Edison Award” in Holland. As a play-conductor, Alexander Lonquich has worked closely with the Orchestra da Camera di Mantova (Mantua, Italy) as well as Frankfurt Radio Symphony, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Deutsche Kammerphilarmonie, Camerata Salzburg, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Orchestre des Champs Elysées and Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala di Milano. He regularly performs with the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, including as a play-conductor since the 2011/12 season. In the 2015/16 season, he was Artist in Residence at the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester in Hamburg. In 2017 he was awarded the “Premio Abbiati” as best soloist.

The Colibrì Ensemble is a chamber orchestra which performs regularly in Pescara, Italy, where it has its own concert season.

Founded in 2013 by Andrea Gallo, Colibrì has become a reality thanks to the passion for music of Dr. Gina Barlafante, physician and osteopath, whose financial support has significantly contributed to the birth of Colibrì. Thanks to a relentless quest for artistic quality since the very beginning, Colibrì has been able to forge collaborations with well-respected artists both including Alexander Lonquich, Enrico Dindo, Alessandro Moccia, Anna Tifu, Francesca Dego, Felice Cusano, Daniele Rustioni, Francesco Di Rosa, Andrea Oliva, Klaidi Sahatçi, Gilad Karni, Christophe Horak, Bruno Delepelaire, Calogero Palermo, Pina Napolitano and Paolo Russo. Colibrì has a special connection with the great pianist Alexander Lonquich, who is now a regular guest each season. Since its formation, the ensemble has had the opportunity to perform in concert seasons outside of Pescara, always to great acclaim. In 2016, Colibrì inaugurated the season at the Teatro Lauro Rossi in Macerata and, playing with Alexander Lonquich, became the first orchestra ever to perform at the Fazioli Concert Hall.

ITA “Senza entusiasmo nulla riesce bene nell’ arte” scrive Schumann in una delle sue Regole di vita musicale, rivelando una visione romantica e passionale della musica come della vita.

Entusiasmo, “en theos”, unione con il divino, ispirazione, ma anche perdita di controllo, follia, oppure incontenibile spinta ad agire e operare dando tutto, rendendo ogni meta raggiungibile e ogni ostacolo superabile. Siamo davvero vicini all’idea di orchestra portata avanti dal Colibrì Ensemble che è riuscito a coinvolgere prestigiosi musicisti e solisti in un progetto singolare non solo per la qualità artistica, ma anche per gli ideali fondanti e la modalità di gestione.

L’ orchestra è nata da una favola per bambini. Il Colibrì è il piccolo ed energico protagonista che racchiude e custodisce uno dei carburanti più propulsivi al mondo: la partecipazione! Su questa strada e fin dai primi passi abbiamo ricercato un approccio cameristico anche davanti ad organici ampi o partiture più complesse.

Alexander Lonquich ha saputo arricchire il nostro percorso con la sua profonda conoscenza della partitura, l’ inesauribile ricerca del dettaglio, il suo saper cogliere la poesia dietro ogni singola nota ed ancor di più il suo vivere la musica sul palcoscenico come un’ esperienza metafisica.

Ascoltando l’incipit della Seconda Sinfonia di Burgmüller, veniamo colpiti immediatamente da una strana assonanza.

Le prime cinque note, anche se distribuite all’interno di un ritmo ternario, prefigurano due momenti chiave della creatività del tardo Schumann: il secondo tempo del Concerto per violino e orchestra e il tema delle cosiddette Geistervariationen (Variazioni degli spiriti), l’ultima sua opera, del febbraio del 1854, terminata nella clinica di Endenich.

Nel caso della prima citazione nominata non sapremo mai se si tratta di un’allusione consapevole, avendo comunque Schumann completato lo Scherzo della Sinfonia appena due anni prima, nel 1851. Si sa che lo stesso Schumann in quell’occasione non era invece disposto ad aggiungere per mano sua l’ultimo tempo mancante, dicendo di “non esserne in grado. Sedendosi per scrivere gli viene la sensazione che Norbert Burgmüller si posizioni dietro di lui per prendere lui stesso in mano la penna”. Colpisce che, scrivendo infine le Geistervariationen, Schumann fosse stato convinto di aver ricevuto in dono il tema dai spiriti di Schubert e Mendelssohn, avendo già tra l’altro abbinato il nome di Schubert a quello di Burgmüller pochi anni dopo la sua morte prematura.

Fino a questo punto stiamo parlando di una chiara influenza subita da Schumann. Che dire però del fatto che, a partire dalla seconda battuta del secondo tempo della Sinfonia, suonato dai fagotti, compare ripetutamente una “premonizione”

del tema principale del Concerto per pianoforte e orchestra schumanniano? Da quanto ne sappiamo, l’autore di Zwickau, componendo quest’opera non poteva essere ancora a conoscenza della partitura incompiuta di Burgmüller. Si deve trattare di una qualche congenialità tra i due. Anzi, tra i tre, dato che quel secondo tempo con l’incedere fatto da un impassibile staccato di violini e viole a base di un ritmo di marcia lenta, accompagnando il malinconico solo del primo oboe, richiama inevitabilmente “La Grande” sinfonia di Schubert D. 944, composta nel 1825, però ritrovata proprio da Schumann solamente nel 1838, due anni dopo la morte di Burgmüller, il quale per forza non poteva averla conosciuta.

Si ha come la sensazione che frammenti di un linguaggio comune affratellassero i tre compositori, secondo il modello della immaginaria Lega di Davide vagheggiata da Schumann.

Delle premonizioni sembrano portare anche verso la Seconda Sinfonia di Brahms. La tonalità, il teso lavorìo motivico, pur meno maturo e concentrato in Burgmüller, il colore di base (quella predominanza dei corni in alcuni punti, per esempio nel Trio dello Scherzo!) ce la fa improvvisamente apparire molto vicina. Brahms conosceva quest’opera? Preparando questo CD ci è piaciuto viaggiare in quel mondo pieno di affinità e rimandi inconsapevoli.

Schumann iniziò a comporre il Concerto per pianoforte e orchestra in la minore nel 1841. Nel settembre precedente, Robert aveva sposato la pianista-compositrice Clara, che descrisse l‘occasione nel suo diario come „il giorno più bello e più importante della mia vita“. Robert decise di scrivere per Clara un movimento di Phantasie per pianoforte e orchestra che completò in soli 16 giorni. Esso fu eseguito privatamente il 13 agosto 1841, ma non fu possibile trovare alcun editore, cosa che probabilmente contribuì a spingere Schumann ad espandere il lavoro, aggiungendo due ulteriori movimenti e creando così un concerto più convenzionale.

Questi due movimenti aggiuntivi seguirono nel 1845: un Intermezzo e un finale (finale scritto per primo) legati da un passaggio che crea una perfetta transizione tra i due movimenti. Ne risulta una notevole uniformità delle sonorità del concerto; non si immaginerebbe mai che ci sia stata un’interruzione nella composizione. Clara diede la prima esecuzione pubblica del concerto a Lipsia nel 1846, ed esso divenne parte integrante del suo repertorio.

Nonostante la sua apparente ricchezza di idee, il primo movimento del concerto è quasi monotematico; quasi, perché gli altri motivi chiave sono udibili, ma è il primo tema

che domina e, trasposto in do maggiore, prende la posizione di „secondo soggetto“ e viene in seguito variato. Il lavoro si apre con un coro lirico dei legni, guidato dall‘oboe, a cui risponde il pianoforte. La struttura orchestrale di Schumann è caratterizzata da slanci brillanti che creano una sonorità quintessenzialmente romantica, mentre le linee melodiche dei legni udite all‘inizio – in particolare oboe e clarinetto – mantengono un ruolo prominente nei loro scambi con il solista. Schumann scrisse lui stesso la cadenza, rivelando la sua predilezione per la poesia musicale invece della virtuosità fine a se stessa – una priorità mantenuta per tutta la durata del brano nonché aspetto che egli aveva già esplicitamente discusso con Clara quando in precedenza aveva tentato di scrivere un Concerto per pianoforte in re minore nel 1839.

Intermezzo e finale si sviluppano in modo organico dal tema principale del primo movimento, le cui linee ascendenti caratterizzano sia il dialogo tra solista e orchestra nel movimento lento sia lo slancio rocambolesco del pianoforte nel finale. Durante l’Intermezzo Schumann estende ulteriormente il principio di conversazione del movimento di apertura, creando un senso di dialogo intimo che risulta intensificato dal trattamento delicato e quasi cameristico delle forze orchestrali. Questo movimento è un perfetto 12 12

esempio dello stile di Schumann: apertamente sentimentale, quasi infantile nella sua qualità di innocente e solare distacco, lontano da ansia e mondanità (stato mentale tanto desiderato dal compositore). Ci sono anche momenti più malinconici; un sospiro autunnale simile a ciò che si ascolterà negli anni a venire nei concerti per pianoforte di Brahms.

L‘Intermezzo sfocia spontaneamente nel finale, originariamente pensato come un Rondò, che sebbene nella sua versione finale non si conformi a quella struttura, ne contiene tuttavia elementi tra cui la ripetizione del tema principale del solista durante i tutti orchestrali. Il finale è pieno di sottili richiami: un secondo tema di marcia, che mise alla prova l‘orchestra guidata da Felix Mendelssohn durante le prove per la prima esecuzione del brano; fraseggio irregolare; anticipazioni orchestrali di tutte le sezioni, che aggiungono una gloriosa dose di slancio; e un fugato quasi comico durante il tutti centrale. Queste idee ingegnose rivelano un compositore al culmine delle sue capacità: non ci sono fuochi artificiali finali pro forma, ma piuttosto un moto di umorismo sottile e quasi eccentrico, nonché un’inventiva perfettamente bilanciata.

Le vite di Robert Schumann e Norbert Burgmüller si intersecano in modo affascinante. Entrambi sono nati nel 1810 ed

entrambi erano afflitti da problemi di salute: Schumann da malattia mentale e Burgmüller da epilessia. Entrambi sono morti in un‘età relativamente giovane: Burgmüller nel 1836 e Schumann nel 1856. Ed entrambi hanno trascorso periodi significativi della loro vita a Düsseldorf, il che spiega come Schumann si sia ritrovato ad orchestrare lo Scherzo della Sinfonia n. 2 in re maggiore, op. 11 di Burgmüller, rimasto incompiuto alla prematura morte del compositore.

Schumann pensò di completare anche il quarto e ultimo movimento, ma infine rinunciò. Tuttavia, scrisse un sentito necrologio quando Burgmüller morì, lamentando che „dalla morte prematura di Schubert, non è successo nulla di più doloroso di quella di Burgmüller“. Mendelssohn compose una marcia funebre per Burgmüller, dopo aver diretto varie sue opere, tra cui la Sinfonia in do minore, op. 2.

Nato in una famiglia di musicisti, Burgmüller si trasferì a Düsseldorf nel 1831, dove i suoi attacchi epilettici ostacolarono la sua vita sociale, ma dove il livello della sua musica crebbe costantemente. Il suo stile si è sviluppato in seno alla raffinatezza classica ereditata dal suo maestro, Louis Spohr, dando vita ad opere romantiche di natura appassionate e dimensioni generose. La sua salute instabile non era però l‘unica ragione per il mancato 13 13

completamento della Seconda Sinfonia; sembra infatti che anche un attacco di blocco dello scrittore ne abbia inibito il progredire. Amalie von Sybel (1798-1847), moglie dello storico Heinrich von Sybel, scrisse allo scrittore Karl Immermann che il compositore “non era riuscito a trovare” il resto del finale (che si interrompe dopo solo 58 battute), aggiungendo che era “metà comico e metà commovente sentirlo rispondere alle domande con le parole “Non è ancora arrivato”.”

Burgmüller compose la sinfonia tra il 1834 ed il 1835; la prima dei due movimenti completi fu eseguita a Düsseldorf il 22 aprile 1837, diretta dal compositore-direttore Julius Rietz, e l‘opera fu successivamente pubblicata a Leipzig nel 1864.

L’Allegro moderato si apre con una vena deliziosamente pastorale, oscillando tra geniale liricismo e interazioni più forti, in una maniera che ricorda la Sinfonia „Pastorale“ di Beethoven ed anticipa la Sinfonia “La Primavera” di Schumann del 1841. L‘Andante si apre con un ritmo insistente degli archi,

su cui fluttua un lungo assolo di oboe. L‘atmosfera sobria si ammorbidisce con un passaggio alla tonalità maggiore, accompagnato dai corni che accentuano la sensazione pastorale della sinfonia; tuttavia prevale comunque un’atmosfera piuttosto malinconica.

Al contrario, lo Scherzo si apre con un‘esplosiva e vigorosa rincorsa ascendente degli archi, scatenando un movimento che si concentra sulla contesa tra una danza raffinata, forse rappresentativa degli aspetti civili dell‘umanità, ed improvvisi torrenti di suono, che riflettono le forze irrefrenabili della natura. Le corna brahmsiane evocano la caccia, trovando quel perfetto bilanciamento tra l‘uomo e la natura: il punto in cui entrambi possono coesistere, anche se per un periodo limitato, in armonia.

Alexander Lonquich è nato a Trier, in Germania. Nel 1977 ha vinto il Primo Premio al Concorso Casagrande dedicato a Schubert. Da allora ha tenuto concerti in Giappone, Stati Uniti e nei principali centri musicali europei. La sua attività lo ha visto impegnato con direttori d’orchestra quali Claudio Abbado, Kurt Sanderling, Ton Koopman, Emmanuel Krivine, Heinz Holliger e Marc Minkowski.

Ha ottenuto numerosi riconoscimenti dalla critica internazionale quali il Diapason d’Or, il Premio Abbiati e il Premio Edison in Olanda. Nel ruolo di direttore-solista, collabora stabilmente con l’Orchestra da Camera di Mantova, ha lavorato con l’Orchestra della Radio di Francoforte, la Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, la Deutsche Kammerphilarmonie, la Camerata Salzburg, la Mahler Chamber Orchestra, l’Orchestre des Champs Elysées e la Filarmonica della Scala di Milano.

Si esibisce regolarmente per l‘Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, con la quale dalla stagione 2011/12 collabora anche come direttore-solista. Nella stagione 2015/16 è stato Artist in Residence presso la NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester. Nel 2017 gli è stato conferito il Premio Abbiati come miglior solista.

Il Colibrì Ensemble è un’ orchestra da camera attiva stabilmente nella città di Pescara con una propria stagione concertistica.

Fondata nel 2013 da Andrea Gallo è divenuta realtà grazie alla passione per la musica della Dott.ssa Gina Barlafante, medico e osteopata. Puntando fin dai primi passi sulla ricerca della qualità artistica, il Colibrì è stato in grado di stringere collaborazioni con importanti artisti quali Alexander Lonquich, Enrico Dindo, Alessandro Moccia, Anna Tifu, Francesca Dego, Felice Cusano, Daniele Rustioni, Francesco Di Rosa, Andrea Oliva, Klaidi Sahatçi, Gilad Karni, Christophe Horak, Bruno Delepelaire, Calogero Palermo, Pina Napolitano e Paolo Russo. Particolare è il sodalizio con il grande pianista Alexander Lonquich, ormai ospite fisso di ogni stagione. In questi anni l’orchestra ha già avuto modo di esibirsi in trasferta in diverse stagioni concertistiche riscuotendo sempre un grande consenso e calorosi apprezzamenti. Nel 2016 ha inaugurato la stagione del Teatro Lauro Rossi di Macerata, è stata inoltre, insieme ad Alexander Lonquich, la prima orchestra ad esibirsi nella stagione della Fazioli Concert Hall.

DEU „Ohne Enthusiasmus wird nichts Rechtes in der Kunst zuwege gebracht“ schrieb Schumann in seinen musikalischen Haus- und Lebensregeln und zeigte damit eine romantische und leidenschaftliche Vision sowohl von Musik als auch vom Leben auf.

Begeisterung, „en Theos“: Vereinigung mit dem Göttlichen, Inspiration; aber auch der Verlust der Kontrolle, Torheit oder unbändiges Streben, immer alles zu geben und jedes Ziel erreichbar und jedes Hindernis überwindbar zu machen. Hier sind wir dem Konzept des Colibrì Ensembles sehr nahe, einem Orchester, das in der Lage war, renommierte Musiker und Solisten in einem Projekt zusammenzubringen, das nicht nur wegen seiner künstlerischen Qualität, sondern auch wegen seiner Gründungsideale und sogar seiner Organisationsstruktur einzigartig ist.

Das Orchester wurde aus einem Kindermärchen geboren. Colibrì ist der kleine und energische Protagonist, der sich für eines der weltweit effektivsten Antriebsmittel einsetzt: die Zusammenarbeit! Genau aus diesem Grund haben wir uns von Anfang an um einen demokratischen Ansatz bemüht, auch wenn es um große Besetzungen oder komplexe Partituren geht.

Alexander Lonquich hat unseren Werdegang mit seiner tiefen Kenntnis der Partitur und seinem unermüdlichen Streben nach dem Detail bereichert, so wie mit seiner Fähigkeit, sowohl die Poesie hinter jeder einzelnen Note einzufangen als auch Musik auf der Bühne als metaphysische Erfahrung zu erleben.

Andrea Gallo Colibrì Ensemble, Künstlerischer Leiter Kunst und besonders Musik waren zu verschiedenen Zeitpunkten meines Lebens immer an meiner Seite, aber ich hätte nie gedacht, dass ich durch die Begegnung mit einem meiner Patienten die Möglichkeit haben würde, der Geburt eines Orchesters beizuwohnen und es zum Leben zu erwecken. Es erfüllt mich mit Freude das Orchester immer wieder auf der Bühne zu sehen und zu hören. Ich nehme etwas Wundervolles und Übernatürliches in den verschiedenen Sensibilitäten, Leidenschaften und Emotionen wahr, die aufeinander treffen und sich zu Musik vermischen.

Ich bin Arzt und kein Musiker ... aber ich bin mir sicher, dass ein Orchester die Menschheit und die Gesellschaft, in der wir leben, verbessern kann!

Beim Hören der ersten Takte der zweiten Sinfonie von Burgmüller fällt uns sofort eine merkwürdige Tatsache auf. Die ersten fünf Töne, die in einem ternären Rhythmus erscheinen, nehmen zwei Schlüsselmomente aus Schumanns letzter kreativer Phase vorweg: Den zweiten Satz des Konzerts für Violine und Orchester und das Thema der sogenannten Geistervariationen, seinem letzten Werk, komponiert im Februar 1854 und vollendet in der Klinik in Endenich.

Was das erste Zitat angeht, werden wir nie wissen, ob es sich um eine bewusste Anspielung handelt, da Schumann das Scherzo seiner Sinfonie erst zwei Jahre zuvor, im Jahre 1851, abgeschlossen hatte. Es ist bekannt, dass Schumann bei dieser Gelegenheit nicht bereit war, den letzten fehlenden Satz hinzuzufügen: „Er war dazu nicht in der Lage. Wenn er sich zum Komponieren setzte, überkam ihn das Gefühl, Norbert Burgmüller stünde hinter ihm und greife selbst zum Stift“. Auffällig ist die Überzeugung Schumanns, er habe das Thema der Geistervariationen als Geschenk der Geister Schuberts und Mendelssohns erhalten, nachdem er bereits die Namen Schuberts und Burgmüllers einige Jahre nach dem frühen Tod des Letzteren verband.

Bis hier konnten wir die klaren Einflüsse Schumanns aufzeigen.

Aber wie ist es möglich, dass ab dem zweiten Takt des zweiten Satzes der Burgmüller-Sinfonie die Fagotte wiederholt eine „Antizipation“ des Hauptthemas von Schumanns Konzert für Klavier und Orchester spielen? Soweit wir wissen, kannte

Schumann beim Komponieren dieses Werkes Burgmüllers unvollendete Partitur noch nicht. Dies muss eine Art Geistesverwandtschaft zwischen den beiden sein, oder sogar zwischen den dreien, so wie etwa der zweite Satz, der durch ein gleichmütiges Staccato der Geigen und Bratschen gekennzeichnet ist, das als Basis eines langsamen Marschrhythmus das melancholische Solo der ersten Oboe begleitet, unweigerlich an die„Große Sinfonie“, D. 944 erinnert, von Schubert 1825 komponiert, aber erst 1838 von Schumann entdeckt, also zwei Jahre nach dem Tod von Burgmüller, der daher nichts davon wissen konnte.

Man möchte glauben, dass Fragmente einer gemeinsamen Sprache die drei Komponisten miteinander verbinden, nach dem von Schumann ersehnten Vorbild des imaginären Davidsbundes.

Vorahnungen scheinen auch zur Sinfonie Nr. 2 von Brahms zu führen. Tonalität, die intensive thematische Arbeit, wenn auch weniger reif und auf Burgmüller fokussiert, wie auch die Grundfarbe des Stückes (teilweise mit Vorherrschaft der Hörner, z.B. im Trio des Scherzos), sind alles Elemente, die Ähnlichkeiten aufweisen. Kannte Brahms dieses Werk? Bei den Vorbereitungen dieser CD genossen wir diese Welt der Übereinstimmungen und unbekannten Querverbindungen.

Schumanns Klavierkonzert in a-Moll wurde 1841 begonnen.

Im September des Jahres zuvor heiratete Robert die Pianistin und Komponistin Clara Wieck, die dieses Ereignis in ihrem Tagebuch als „den schönsten und bedeutsamsten Tag meines Lebens“ beschrieb. Robert machte sich daran, für Clara eine einsätzige Phantasie für Klavier und Orchester zu schreiben, die er in nur sechzehn Tagen fertigstellte. Sie wurde privat am 13. August 1841 aufgeführt, aber kein Verleger konnte Schumann dazu bewegen, das Werk um zwei weitere Sätze im Sinne eines konventionellen Konzertes zu erweitern.

Diese beiden zusätzlichen Sätze folgten 1845: Ein Intermezzo und ein Finale (das Finale entstand zuerst), die durch eine Überleitung nahtlos miteinander verbunden sind. Es ist bemerkenswert, wie einheitlich das daraus resultierende Konzert klingt; nie hätte man vermuten können, dass es einst eine Trennung in der Komposition gegeben hatte. Clara führte das Konzert 1846 in Leipzig zum ersten Mal auf, und es wurde zu einem festen Bestandteil ihres Konzertrepertoires.

Trotz seines scheinbaren Ideenreichtums ist der erste Satz fast monothematisch; fast, weil man ebenfalls Motive in anderen Tonarten hört, wenngleich das erste Thema dominiert und, in C-Dur transponiert, die Stellung eines zweiten Themas

einnimmt, wonach es dann variiert wird. Das Werk beginnt mit einem von der Oboe angeführten lyrischen Holzbläserchor, der vom Klavier erwidert wird. Schumanns gewandte Orchestertextur zeichnet sich durch stürmische Wellen aus, die eine wahrhaft romantische Klangfülle erzeugen, während die zu Beginn wahrgenommenen Holzbläser – allen voran die Oboe und Klarinette – weiterhin eine wichtige Rolle im Dialog mit dem Soloinstrument spielen. Schumann schrieb die Kadenz selbst und setzte dabei den Akzent auf die musikalische Poesie anstelle der Virtuosität - eine Priorität, die während des gesamten Werkes erhalten blieb und die er bereits mit Clara ausdiskutiert hatte, als er 1839 versuchte, für sie ein früheres Klavierkonzert in d-Moll zu schreiben.

Intermezzo und Finale wachsen organisch aus dem Hauptthema des ersten Satzes heraus, dessen aufsteigende Achteln sowohl den Dialog zwischen Solist und Orchester im langsamen Satz als auch die Einleitung des Klaviers im Finale kennzeichnen. Im Intermezzo treibt Schumann das Dialog-Prinzip des Kopfsatzes noch weiter und schafft ein Gefühl intimen Wechselgesprächs, das durch die zarte, fast kammermusikalische Behandlung seines Orchesters verstärkt wird. Dieser Satz ist ein perfektes Beispiel für Schumanns Stil: Unverhohlen sentimental, fast 18 18

kindlich in seiner Eigenschaft unschuldiger, strahlender Lockerheit, jenseits aller Weltlichkeit oder Ängste (ein vielleicht vom Komponisten ersehnter Zustand). Trotzdem gibt es auch sehnsuchtsvolle Momente; ein herbstliches Seufzen, wie es in den späteren Klavierkonzerten von Brahms zu hören sein wird.

Das Intermezzo taumelt mühelos ins Finale, das ursprünglich als Rondo bezeichnet wurde, und obwohl es in seiner endgültigen Fassung nicht dieser Struktur entspricht, gibt es Rondo-Elemente in der vom Solisten vorgetragenen Wiederholung des Hauptthemas während des Orchestertuttis.

Das Finale ist voll subtiler Akzente: Ein zweites Marschthema, das bei den Proben zur Uraufführung das von Mendelssohn geleitete Orchester forderte: Unregelmäßige Phrasierung; orchestrale Antizipation von Tutti-Abschnitten mit großartigen impulsiven Einschüben; und ein fast komisches Fugato während des zentralen Tuttis. Diese genialen Kunstgriffe lassen einen Komponisten auf dem Höhepunkt seiner Schaffenskraft erkennen: Es gibt keine flüchtigen finalen Feuerwerke, sondern einen Satz von subtilem, sogar schrullig gutem Humor und kompositorisch makelloser Erfindungsgabe.

Das Leben von Robert Schumann und Norbert Burgmüller überschneidet sich auf faszinierende Weise. Beide wurden

1810 geboren und beide litten unter gesundheitlichen Problemen: Schumann unter einer Geisteskrankheit und Burgmüller unter Epilepsie. Beide Männer starben in relativ jungen Jahren: Burgmüller im Jahre 1836 und Schumann 1856. Beide verbrachten einen bedeutenden Teil ihres Lebens in Düsseldorf, und so kam es, dass Schumann das Scherzo aus Burgmüllers Sinfonie Nr. 2 in D-Dur, Op. 11, unvollendet als dieser vorzeitig starb, orchestrierte.

Schumann erwog sogar, den vierten und letzten Satz zu vervollständigen, gab den Gedanken aber auf. Er schrieb jedoch einen herzlichen Nachruf und beklagte: „Nach Franz Schuberts frühzeitigem Tod konnte keiner schmerzlicher treffen als der Burgmüllers.“ Mendelssohn komponierte für Burgmüller einen Trauermarsch, nachdem er mehrere seiner Werke dirigiert hatte, darunter seine Sinfonie in c-Moll, Op. 2.

Als Kind einer musikalischen Familie kam Burgmüller 1831 nach Düsseldorf, wo ihn seine epileptischen Anfälle am gesellschaftlichen Leben hinderten, wo jedoch seine Musik immer bedeutender wurde. Sein Stil entwickelte sich aus dem von seinem Lehrer Louis Spohr übernommenen klassischen Raffinement, bis hin zu leidenschaftlich und groβ angelegten romantischen Werken. Sein kränkelnder Zustand war jedoch nicht 19 19

der einzige Grund für die Unvollständigkeit der Zweiten Sinfonie: Eine Schreibblockade scheint den Entstehungsvorgang gehemmt zu haben. Amalie von Sybel (1798-1847), Ehefrau des Historikers Heinrich von Sybel, schrieb an den Schriftsteller Karl Immermann, der Komponist habe den Rest des Finales (nach nur 58 Takten abgebrochen) „nicht finden können“, und fügte hinzu: „Halb komisch, halb rührend, beantwortete er die Anfragen mit den Worten `Noch ist es nicht so weit´“.

Burgmüller komponierte die Sinfonie zwischen 1834 und 1835; seine beiden vollständigen Sätze wurden am 22. April 1837 in Düsseldorf unter der Leitung des Komponisten und Dirigenten Julius Rietz uraufgeführt und 1864 in Leipzig veröffentlicht. Das Allegro moderato beginnt in herrlich pastoraler Manier zwischen heiterer Lyrik und stürmischen Einschüben, die an Beethovens Pastorale erinnern und Schumanns Frühlingssinfonie von 1841 vorwegnehmen.

Das Andante beginnt mit einem eindringlichen Rhythmus

der Streicher, über dem ein langatmiges Oboensolo schwebt. Die nüchterne Atmosphäre wird mit einem Wechsel nach Dur gemildert, begleitet von Hörnern, die das pastorale Gefühl der Sinfonie hervorheben; dennoch überwiegt eine eher düstere Stimmung.

Im Gegensatz dazu beginnt das Scherzo mit einem schwungvoll aufsteigenden Streichersatz und setzt dabei Kräfte frei, die sich zwischen einem gezierten Tanz, der möglicherweise die zivilisierten Aspekte der Menschheit repräsentiert, und plötzlichen Klangfluten, die die unbändigen Mächte der Natur widerspiegeln, bewegen. Brahms´ Hörner beschwören die Jagd herauf und erreichen einen lieblichen Zustand zwischen Mensch und Natur: Der Punkt, wo beide für einen gewissen Zeitraum in Harmonie leben können.

Alexander Lonquich wurde in Trier geboren. 1977 gewann er den ersten Preis beim Casagrande-Wettbewerb, der Schubert gewidmet war. Seitdem hat er auf den prestigeträchtigsten Bühnen in Japan, den USA und Europa gespielt. Er arbeitete mit Dirigenten wie Claudio Abbado, Kurt Sanderling, Ton Koopman, Emmanuel Krivine, Heinz Holliger und Marc Minkowski zusammen.

Er hat zahlreiche internationale Kritikerpreise erhalten, darunter den Diapason d’Or, den Premio Abbiati und den Edison Award in Holland. Als Interpret/Dirigent arbeitete Alexander Lonquich eng mit dem Kammerorchester Mantua (Italien) sowie dem hrSinfonieorchester Frankfurt, dem Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, der Deutschen Kammerphilharmonie, der Camerata Salzburg, dem Mahler Kammerorchester, dem Orchestre des Champs Elysées und dem Orchester Filarmonica della Scala di Milano zusammen. Er tritt regelmäßig mit dem Orchester der Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rom auf, seit der Spielzeit 2011/12 auch als Interpret/Dirigent. Während der Spielzeit 2015/16 war er Residenzkünstler beim NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester in Hamburg. 2017 wurde er als bester Solist mit dem Premio Abbiati ausgezeichnet.

Das Colibrì Ensemble ist ein Kammerorchester, das regelmäßig in Pescara, Italien, spielt, wo es seine eigene Konzertsaison hat. Colibrì wurde 2013 von Andrea Gallo ins Leben gerufen und ist dank der musikalischen Leidenschaft von der Ärztin und Osteopathin Dr. Gina Barlafante Wirklichkeit geworden, deren finanzielle Unterstützung maßgeblich zur Geburt von Colibrì beigetragen hat. Dank dem unermüdlichen Streben nach künstlerischer Qualität hat Colibrì seit jeher Kooperationen mit angesehenen Künstlern wie Alexander Lonquich, Enrico Dindo, Alessandro Moccia, Anna Tifu, Francesca Dego, Felice Cusano, Daniele Rustioni, Francesco Di Rosa, Andrea Oliva, Klaidi Sahatçi, Gilad Karni, Christophe Horak, Bruno Delepelaire, Calogero Palermo, Pina Napolitano und Paolo Russo aufgebaut. Im Jahr 2016 eröffnete Colibrì die Saison am Teatro Lauro Rossi in Macerata und wurde mit Alexander Lonquich das erste Orchester überhaupt, das in der Fazioli Concert Hall spielte.
