I can picture myself now, as a very small boy, alone, in our holiday home by the beach, listening... It was Bach, the sea, as Beethoven put it.* The location: Rosebud, south eastern Australia. I played these recordings endlessly, and I was mesmerised by the beauty and the joy. The music was the first book of The Well-Tempered Clavier, and as I grew as a person and as a musician, my love and fascination for this music only increased. Many years later I became entranced by the second book, and it is one of my highest privileges to be able to share this music in concert, and now in recording.

With the second book, I am experiencing a work of vast emotional breadth. There is euphoria, there is serenity, there is drama, there is the deepest grief... The affectual subtleties and depths heard in Bach’s other works of this later period are found here to perfection. Furthermore, one of the most remarkable aspects of this very profound music is that its expressive content is open to many varied viewpoints. Like a diamond, new and brilliant flashes of light and colour appear when viewed from a multiplicity of different perspectives.

It’s an impossibly mysterious task to understand the influences which shape the inevitable evolution of one’s own highly personal interpretive language. First is my love for the harpsichord and harpsichord-playing techniques, and the exquisite sound-world of early instruments. Then there is my immersion in the analytical world of baroque performance practice and Bach scholarship.

Far from being distractingly intellectual, these influences are a perpetual inspiration. They have allowed me to form a vocabulary which is unashamedly viewed through the polychromatic lens of the modern piano.

BACH Das Wohltemperierte Klavier, Teil II In Gedanken sehe ich mich als kleinen Jungen, allein, in unserem Ferienhaus am Strand, lauschend... Bach (nicht Bach, sondern Meer sollte er heißen, wie Beethoven sagte).

Standort: Rosebud, Süd-Ost-Australien. Ich spielte diese Aufnahmen unzählige Male ab, berauscht von der Schönheit und dem Glücksgefühl. Was ich hörte, war Das Wohltemperierte Klavier, Teil I. Je mehr ich als Mensch und Musiker heranreifte, steigerte sich meine Liebe und Faszination für diese Musik. Viele Jahre später zog mich Teil II in seinen Bann, und es ist einer meiner größten Privilegien, diese Musik im Konzert mit dem Publikum teilen zu dürfen, so wie auch jetzt bei dieser Aufnahme.

Bei der Beschäftigung mit Teil II erlebe ich ein Werk von überwältigender Gefühlsbreite: Rauschzustände, Ruhe, Dramatik, tiefste Trauer...

Die affektbeladenen Feinheiten und die Tiefe anderer bachscher Werke dieser späteren Periode gelangen hier zur Vollkommenheit.

Einen weiteren bemerkenswerten Aspekt dieser tiefgründigen Musik findet man in ihrem Ausdrucksgehalt, der sehr unterschiedliche Blickwinkel erlaubt. Wie bei einem Diamanten funkeln Farben und Lichtblitze beim Betrachten der einzelnen Facetten.

Es ist fast unmöglich, die Einflüsse nachzuvollziehen, die die folgerichtige Entwicklung der sehr persönlichen Interpretation formen.

Zunächst ist da meine Vorliebe für das Cembalo, für die Cembalo-Spieltechniken und für den exquisiten Klang der alten Instrumente.

Dann folgt mein Eintauchen in die analytische Welt der barocken Aufführungspraxis und der Bachforschung. Weit davon entfernt, einen übertrieben intellektuellen Standpunkt einnehmen zu wollen, sind diese Einflüsse doch eine ständige Inspirationquelle. Sie erlaubten mir eine Sprache zu entwickeln, die ganz offen durch die polychrome Linse des modernen Klaviers betrachtet wird.

Die Aufnahmesitzungen habe ich sehr genossen: In einem Konzertsaal, allein, nur begleitet von vier höchst aufmerksamen Mikrofonen. Es war eine außergewöhnliche Herausforderung, aber auch eine erfreuliche Erfahrung. Ich hoffe, einen frischen Ansatz gefunden zu haben und gemeinsam mit dem Hörer diese besonders gefühlvolle Reise antreten zu können.

Par ailleurs, l’un des aspects les plus remarquables de cette musique si profonde est que son contenu expressif suscite des points de vue si divers. Comme un diamant, de nouvelles lumières et couleurs apparaissent à chaque fois, selon les différentes perspectives.

Comprendre les influences qui façonnent l’évolution inévitable d’un style d’interprétation hautement personnel est une tâche presque impossible. La première est mon amour pour le clavecin et ses techniques associées, et l’univers sonore exquis des instruments anciens. Vient ensuite mon immersion dans le monde analytique du jeu baroque et l’univers de Bach. Loin d’être intellectuellement distrayantes, ces influences sont une source d’inspiration perpétuelle. Elles m’ont permis de créer un vocabulaire vu sans pudeur à travers le regard polychrome du piano moderne.
