The great carnival that is life is peopled with an array of colourful characters, jostling for our attention. Nobody appreciated this more than Schumann, who regularly created or called upon a host of personalities with whom to populate his music. Yet this sociable outlook was offset by Schumann’s own mental fragility, through which he understood the subtler, smaller-scale implications of life’s carnival: that within each of us we may experience the tussle between contrasting, even conflicting calls upon our attention; that our own individual characters may be divided into different versions, different variations, of ourselves.

The works presented here are powerful, provocative, and inventive; and they have also grown with me over the years. Both Carnaval, Op. 9 and Fasschingschwank aus Wien, Op. 26 are a trip into the wildest and most exciting regions of Schumann’s psyche. My idea when interpreting these pieces was to offer a new, theatrical and exciting approach, in which the kaleidoscope of characters and emotions that permeate both pieces merge together into a magical carnival jest where everyone is invited to take part. Being in the privileged position of the performer allows me to invite the audience to the party Schumann had in mind, and it is my pleasure as a “tour-guide” to show you its magic, and to attempt to draw you in from the first note –not releasing you until the clock strikes twelve.

Rather than taking a purely analytical or even obsessive pathway into these works, I have gone deep into my own character and my Mediterranean roots to emphasise their emotive and colourful aspects. The Geistervariationen, however, depict an ethereal, ghostly carnival within, probing different facets of a single character. This set of variations is, perhaps, the most beautiful music Schumann ever wrote for the piano. Its heavenly phrasing and simple harmonic language allow me and the listener to enjoy music in its purest form.

Presenting both Carnavals alongside the introspective Geistervariationen allows me to demonstrate to the audience the real emotional dichotomy that not only Schumann, but, perhaps, every human being, has experienced. With their strong appeal to both the inner emotions and to logic, these contrasting works of art have a particular appeal for me, as though in them Schumann has distilled the very essence of life itself.

La vida es un enorme carnaval de variopintos personajes que llaman nuestra atención. Nadie supo apreciar esto mejor que Schumann, presto a crear o a evocar personajes con los que poblaba su música. Sin embargo, a esta actitud sociable hay que sumarle su propia fragilidad mental, a través de la cual comprendía las implicaciones más sutiles, más imperceptibles del carnaval de la vida. A saber, que en nuestro interior experimentamos la pugna entre voces contrarias, incluso contradictorias, que requieren nuestra atención; que nuestros propios caracteres individuales pueden escindirse en diferentes versiones, en diferentes variaciones de nosotros mismos.

Las obras aquí presentadas son poderosas, provocativas y originales; y también han crecido conmigo a lo largo de los años. Tanto el Carnaval, op. 9 como Faschingsschwank aus Wien, op. 26 son un viaje a las regiones más exaltadas y apasionadas de la psique de Schumann. Mi concepto interpretativo para estas piezas consistía en ofrecer un enfoque nuevo, dramático y apasionado, en el que el caleidoscopio de personajes y emociones que impregnan las dos piezas se funden en un carnaval mágico apto para todo el mundo. Gozo del privilegio como intérprete de poder invitar a la audiencia a que participe de la fiesta que Schumann tenía en su mente, y es un placer para mí hacer de “guía turístico” y mostrarles su magia desde la primera nota musical, y sin soltarles hasta que el reloj marque las doce.

En lugar de adentrarme de manera puramente analítica e incluso obsesiva en estas obras, me sumergí profundamente en mi propio carácter y en mis raíces mediterráneas para enfatizar los aspectos emocionales y arrebatados. Geistervariationen, sin embargo, representa un carnaval etéreo y fantasmal mostrando las diferentes facetas de un único carácter. Quizá sea este conjunto de variaciones lo más bello que Schumann jamás haya escrito para piano. Con su encanto emocional y estructural, esta obra de arte de fuertes contrastes ejerce un atractivo especial sobre mí, como si en ella Schumann hubiera destilado la esencia misma de la vida.

Der große Karneval des Lebens ist mit vielfarbigen Charakteren bevölkert, die unsere Aufmerksamkeit erheischen. Keiner wusste das mehr zu schätzen als Schumann selbst, der in seiner Musik unzählige Persönlichkeiten erschuf oder lebendig werden ließ. Neben seiner kontaktfreudigen Haltung muss man seine geistige Zerbrechlichkeit berücksichtigen, die ihn die subtileren, unterschwelligen Begleiterscheinungen des Lebens-Karnevals erkennen ließ: Dass nämlich jeder von uns den Konflikt zwischen kontrastreichen, ja konfliktreichen Momenten erfährt; dass unsere eigenen, individuellen Charaktere sich möglicherweise in verschiedene Varianten, unterschiedliche Versionen von uns selbst aufspalten lassen.

Die hier präsentierten Werke sind kraftvoll, provokativ und einfallsreich; sie sind im Laufe der Jahre auch mit mir gewachsen.

Sowohl Carnaval, Op. 9 als auch der Faschingsschwank aus Wien, Op. 26 sind eine Reise in die überschwänglichsten und leidenschaftlichsten Regionen von Schumanns Psyche. Meine Vorstellung bei der Interpretation dieser Stücke war eine neue, bildhafte und anregende Annäherung, in der das Kaleidoskop von Charakteren und Gefühlen die beiden Stücke durchdringt und zu einem magischen Karnevalsfest vermengt, zu dem jeder eingeladen ist. Meine bevorzugte Stellung als Interpret erlaubt es mir, die Zuhörer zu dieser Feier einzuladen, die Schumann vorschwebte, und es ist mir eine Freude, Ihnen als „Reiseführer“ seine Fähigkeit zu demonstrieren, Ihre Aufmerksamkeit von der ersten Note an zu fesseln und Sie nicht zu entlassen, bevor die Uhr zwölf schlägt.

Statt einen rein analytischen, peinlich genauen Weg in diese Werke einzuschlagen, bin ich tief in meine eigene Persönlichkeit und meine mediterranen Wurzeln eingetaucht, um die gefühlvollen und farbigen Aspekte dieser Kompositionen hervorzuheben. Die Geistervariationen jedoch beschreiben einen ätherischen, gespenstischen Karneval, der unterschiedliche Facetten eines einzelnen Charakters erforscht. Diese Variationen sind die vielleicht schönste Musik, die Schumann je für Klavier geschrieben hat. Seine himmlische Ausdrucksweise und schlichte, harmonische Sprache erlauben es mir und dem Zuhörer, Musik in ihrer reinsten Form zu genießen.

Carnaval und die introspektiven Geistervariationen zusammen zu präsentieren ermöglichen mir, dem Publikum die wahre emotionale Dichotomie zu demonstrieren, die nicht allein Schumann, sondern vielleicht jedes menschliche Wesen erfahren hat.

Mit ihrer betonten Neigung zu beidem, sowohl innerer Bewegung als auch Logik, haben diese gegensätzlichen Kunstwerke einen besonderen Reiz für mich, insofern als Schumann aus ihnen die wahre Essenz des Lebens herausdestilliert hat.

Der preisgekrönte, in Spanien geborene Pianist Juan Carlos gab

Als Kammermusiker spielte Juan Carlos bei Festivals in Europa und

sein Debüt 16-jährig mit dem Orchester Ciudad de Granada unter

Leitung von Lutz Köhler. Auf dem Programm stand Mozarts D-Moll-
