Music is a universal reflection of humanity; a game like that of love, in which contestants are involved in a continuous battle with their limitations, chasing their horizons towards the discovery of new experiences and sensations.

This universality, this alchemy of the senses, means that different cultures and historical experiences are not insurmountable barriers to communication but unique opportunities for mutual enrichment.

Our cultural backgrounds are very different: I am from Italy and Megumi is from Japan. Our personalities are also quite distinct, and at first glance one might be tempted to accentuate these differences, regarding them as incompatibilities.

Moreover, our instruments have very different colouristic palettes and techniques, and the saxophone itself straddles genres in a way which could lead to a split personality, a conflicted tussle between two realms. But, as with our duo, the music, and the time we have both spent with it overcomes all obstacles, and unifies our vision as a duo, and we relish the distinct sounds of piano and saxophone, of classical and jazz. These differences and contrasts are the springboards from which we launch into flight.

I was struck afresh by the sheer variety of material available for the saxophone when researching the music for this disc. There is the wide-ranging Légende by Schmitt, spanning lyricism and impetuosity, its continuous motion, rising from moments of profound calm to ebullient overflowing crests. So suggestive of “Vagues” (waves), and such a dear piece to us, it inspired the name of our duo.

Jolivet was immersed in both atonality and jazz, and in fusing the two explores the saxophone’s velvety tone. Milhaud was a master of comic irony and took us to South America. We were also impressed by the wealth of sophisticated rhythms and textures in Françaix’s music, his focus on the minute contrasting sharply with Schmitt’s epic style. Hindemith’s genius is welldocumented, but less famous is Creston, whose Sonata I have been playing for a decade, yet which always yields something new.

A relatively modern instrument, the saxophone – in its various

Andrea Mocci (b. 1985) is an Italian soloist, performer and teacher.

He has received his diploma in saxophone and chamber music at the conservatories of L. Canepa in Sassari and G. Verdi in Milan. He also studied composition and jazz.

Passionate about the promotion and diffusion of new music, he regularly works closely with composers, inspiring the birth of about 13 new compositions dedicated to him for saxophone solo, saxophone and piano, saxophone quartet, saxophone with electronics, and mixed ensemble with saxophone.

His projects focus on educational and musicological elements, such as historical repertoire and new music in collaboration with pianist Megumi Nakanomori, as “Duo Vagues”.

Megumi Nakanomori was born in Japan and began to play the piano at the age of four. She graduated in 2007 from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music and started to perform as a concert soloist with several orchestras in Japan, in works including Schumann’s Concerto in A minor, Op. 54 and Bach’s Concerto in D minor, BWV1052.

In 2011 she began her European career and from 2013 to 2014 she was a member of the Ensemble of the Academy of La Scala, Milan, specialized in 20th century repertoire and performing at numerous prestigious venues, both in Italy and abroad.

La musica è un riflesso universale dell’umanità; un gioco come l’amore, in cui i contendenti sono coinvolti in una battaglia continua contro i propri limiti, all’inseguimento dei propri orizzonti e verso la scoperta di nuove esperienze e sensazioni.

Questa universalità, questa alchimia dei sensi, significa che le culture e le esperienze storiche diverse non sono un ostacolo insormontabile alla comunicazione, ma sono invece opportunità uniche di arricchimento reciproco.

Le nostre culture sono molto diverse: io vengo dall’Italia e Megumi dal Giappone. Anche le nostre personalità sono ben distinte, e a prima vista si potrebbe essere tentati di accentuare queste differenze, considerandole incompatibilità.

I nostri strumenti hanno tavolozze e tecniche coloristiche molto diverse, ed il sassofono stesso si trova a cavallo tra due generi in un modo che potrebbe ricondurre ad una doppia personalità, una lotta conflittuale tra le due realtà. Invece, come con il nostro duo, la musica ed il tempo che entrambi abbiamo trascorso con essa superano tutti gli ostacoli ed unificano la nostra visione come duo, e ne assaporiamo i suoni distinti di pianoforte e sassofono, di classica e jazz.

Quando cercavo la musica per questo disco sono stato colpito dalla grande varietà di materiale disponibile per sassofono.

C’è la vasta Légende di Schmitt, che abbraccia lirismo ed irruenza, ed il cui moto continuo passa da momenti di profonda calma a picchi di traboccante esuberanza. È un pezzo così rappresentativo delle «Vagues» (onde), e così significativo per noi, che ha ispirato il nome stesso del nostro duo.

Jolivet era immerso in entrambe atonalità e jazz, ed è nella fusione di entrambi che egli esplora il tono vellutato del sassofono. Milhaud era un maestro di ironia comica e ci ha portati in Sud America. デュオ・ヴァーグのアーティストステートメント 音楽は、普遍的な人類の投影です。競争者が自らの限界との断続的な戦いの中で、新たな経験や感覚を発見 すべく、限界を追い求めるという愛の駆け引きです。この普遍性や感覚の錬金術は、異なる文化や歴史的経 験が、人々の意思疎通にとって乗り越えられない壁ではなく、互いが豊かになるための貴重な機会であるこ とを意味しています。我々の文化的背景も非常に異なっています。私はイタリア、そしてめぐみさんは日本 出身です。性格もとても違います。一目見ただけでは、その違いに目を向けがちで、両立し難いものとみら れるでしょう。さらに、私たちの楽器は、音色の種類や技術が非常に異なり、サクソフォーン自体は、二重 人格、ふたつの領域間の矛盾した戦いになるほどにジャンルをまたいでいます。しかしながら、我々デュオ 同様に、音楽やその活動を通して過ごした時間は、すべての障害を克服し、デュオとしての我々のビジョン を統合し、クラシックやジャズのピアノやサクソフォーンの異なる音色を楽しむことができます。これらの 違いやコントラストは、離陸前の踏切板のようなものなのです。 今回、アルバムのための音楽を探している際、サクソフォーンの楽曲が実に多く存在することに、今さらな がら感銘を受けました。シュミットの「Légende（伝説）」は、叙情性と激しさ、その連続的な動き、深 い静寂から情熱的に溢れ出す波頭となる隆起を包含しています。「ヴァーグ（波）」を連想させる、我々に とって大切なこの曲が、デュオ命名へのインスピレーションとなりました。 ジョリヴェは、無調性とジャズ、そしてその二つを融合させることでサクソフォーンの柔らかなトーンを模 索することに没頭しました。ミヨーは喜劇的皮肉家の巨匠で、我々を南アフリカへのウィットのある冒険に 誘います。また我々は、フランセの音楽の中に宿る洗練されたリズムと基調の豊富さ、シュミットの叙情詩 的スタイルとの細かいコントラストにおける焦点に感銘を受けました。ヒンデミットの非凡な才能は十分な 記録が残っていますが、クレストンに関してはあまり知られていません。私はクレストンのソナタを十年間 演奏し続けていますが、常に新しい発見があります。 サクソフォーンの真の先駆者であり、私が師事しているユージン・ルソー氏をはじめ、長年にわたり、我々 をご指導くださった先生方に、心から感謝いたします。 アンドレア・モッチ

比較的新しい楽器であるサキソフォンは、さまざまな形を 経て19世紀半ばにベルギーの楽器製作者アドルフ・サッ クスの手により誕生しました。しなやかでときに挑発的な その音色は、このディスクに登場する20世紀初頭のフラ ンスの作曲家をとりわけ魅了しました。しかしこの楽器は さらに世界を引きつけ、ここにも収録されているポール・ クレストンのソナタのように、アメリカ文化においても不 動の地位を得ることとなります。 ドイツの音楽と特別相性がよかったというわけではありま せんが、サキソフォンはドイツでも賛同者を得ます。フラ ンス人でありながらドイツの伝統の中で育ったフローラ ン・シュミットと、パウル・ヒンデミットです。ヒンデミ ットはできる限り多くの楽器をソナタに使用したいと考え ており、そのことが1940年代のサキソフォンとの出会い につながりました。 ドイツ国境近くのロレーヌに生まれたシュミットは、古典 派やロマン派のドイツ音楽に囲まれた厳格な音楽環境で育 ちました。その後、彼はワーグナーに夢中になります。ま た、彼の音楽スタイルは、リヒャルト・シュトラウスから も強い影響を受け、さらに、フランスの影響も少なからず 受けています。シュミットは、1889年からパリ音楽院で フォーレの作曲クラスを受講後、ほどなくしてラヴェルと

1985年イタリアに生まれる。サックス奏者、パフォーマーで あり指導者。

鳥取県出身。4歳でピアノを始める。東京藝術大学音楽学部器 楽科ピアノ専攻卒業。シュー マンのピアノ協奏曲、バッハのピ アノ協奏曲1番をオーケストラと協演。2009年にイタリア に渡 り、国立ミラノ・ヴェルディ音楽院に学ぶ。在学中に結成した トリオ・アマデウスと学 内の室内楽コンクールで優勝、ミラノ でコンサートデビューを果たす。

6歳から音楽を学び始め、サッサリ音楽院とミラノ音楽院のサ ックス科、室内楽科を満点プラス賛辞で卒業。2011年ミラノ のヴェルディホールにてミヨーのスカラムーシュをオーケスト ラと共演し、ソリストとしてデビューする。同時に作曲やジャ ズも学び、ヨーロッパの重要な都市(ヘント、ダブリン、ブレー シャ、ヘルシンキ、タリン、ヴィリニュス、ベオグラード、リ スボン、モンペリエ、ドルトムント、ティルブルフ、ブリュッ セル、ストラスブール)における国際音楽祭に参加する。 ソロ、室内楽において、プレミオ・デッレ・アルティ、大学・ 研究省コンクール、トレヴィーゾ市コンクール、ベッラージョ 市コモ湖コンクール、ランポレッキオ市ロスピリオージコンク ール、ピオーヴェ・ディ・サッコ市音楽コンクール、フィレン ツェ市クレシェンドコンクールなど、多くのコンクールで優勝 または入賞。ソリストまたはオーケストラのメンバーとして演 奏活動を展開し、ミラノ・ヴェルディオーケストラ、ヴィチェ ンツァ・オリンピコ劇場オーケストラ、トリエステ劇場オーケ ストラ、ディヴェルティメント・アンサンブルと共演。新曲の 紹介や普及活動にも積極的に参加し、定期的に作曲家と連携し コラボレーションを行う。これまでに、サックスソロ、サック スカルテット、エレクトロニクスとサックス、サックスとアン サンブルの為の13曲が献呈され、初演。

2013年から2年間スカラ座アカデミーの室内アンサンブルでピ アニストを務め、イタリア、 その他の国における様々な演奏 会に出演。ソリストとしては、2015年スピネア市国際音楽 コ ンクール、コルテミリア市国際音楽コンクール(イタリア)で優 勝。 2013年、スカラ座でブリテンのオペラ「小さな煙突掃除」(指 揮ブルーノ・カゾーニ)に出 演。2014年には同劇場で行われた パリ・モスクワ・ミラノのアカデミー合同バレエ公演に て、バ ッハのコンチェルト1番(指揮デイヴィッド・コレマン)のソリス トを務めた。

デュオ・ヴァーグとしてピアニストの中ノ森めぐみとコラボレ ーションを行い、指導法、クラシックのレパートリーと新曲の 研究に精力的に取り組んでいる。
