2018 marked the 100 year anniversary of restored Lithuania. However, this shouldn’t be confused with 100 years of freedom for the country; the region saw its territory go back and forth, claimed by Germany, Poland and Russia until, in 1990, Lithuania declared independence from the USSR. The country lies neatly along the fault lines between east and west, and bears the scars of many political earthquakes, while also offering a unique cultural reservoir formed by its geopolitical landscape.

We have recorded a project which means a lot to our trio: a programme celebrating the richness of Lithuanian heritage, folklore, history, tradition, and diversity, along with the enormity of what transpired on that territory. The three of us have different backgrounds converging around Lithuania; we all have family members born and buried there. Each of our families made the country its home, while also belonging to different groups: to the Lithuanian ethnicity, but also to the Jewish, Polish, and Russian ones.

For this reason, we wanted to record a programme as multifaceted and varied as our own experience, while delving into the essence of the land and its people. We commissioned five composers to write works for us, three dealing specifically with the Lithuanian tradition of the Sutartinė, a folk song which belongs to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, but with drastically different stylistic approaches. The other two works go in a different direction; one delves into the contemporary Lithuanian musical landscape, and the other addresses the history of forced Lithuanian labour in Siberia.

These five works, commissioned and premiered in 2017 to celebrate 100 years of restored Lithuania, ultimately honour Lithuania’s 30 years of true independence, a tribute to a country that is both remarkably young and truly ancient.

The music of the Baltics has drawn increasing interest in recent years, and Lithuanian culture in particular is at the heart of Trio Agora’s shared vision. The commissions brought together on this album reflect the Trio’s backgrounds and their focus on an authentic representation of Lithuanian music, the roots of which are as rich and varied as the works on this programme. Early Lithuanian music adopted the Gregorian chant of the monastic tradition, and in the 15th and 16th centuries Lithuanian composers modelled masses and motets on polyphony from the Netherlands. Court music was an important centre for creativity until the decline of the Lithuanian aristocracy in the 18th century, when music was increasingly democratised. The study of many musical disciplines was encouraged at Vilnius University from the 19th century, when composers sought to establish a national style; in the 1930s some aimed to blend this national style, which embraced folk music, with more modernist principles. A turning point came in 1940 with the Soviet annexation of Lithuania. Composers were expected to toe the party line; censorship was stringent and the known music of this era inevitably tends to conform to the Soviet rule-book. The 1960s brought greater freedom and the increasing use of more wide-ranging techniques including serialism.

Today, Lithuanian composers are revelling in an exciting fusion of styles, ranging from the country’s folk traditions to jazz and pop and everything in between. Trio Agora has brought together a programme of new music that reflects these different facets of Lithuanian influence and style.

Joel Hoffman (b. 1953) is a composer and

pianist whose music embraces a range of cultural influences. Born in Vancouver and now resident in New York, Hoffman studied at the University of Wales in Cardiff and at the Juilliard School in New York, with teachers including Elliott Carter, Milton Babbitt, Alun Hoddinott, Arnold Whittall, Vincent Persichetti and Easley Blackwood. Hoffman in turn taught composition for over 30 years at the CCM (College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati), and founded festivals in the States and in Europe, with his Music X festival of contemporary music spanning both continents, first in Cincinnati and then in Switzerland. Hoffman has also directed a summer school in Croatia since 2004. This generous approach extends to and pervades Hoffman’s compositional output, which encompasses a plethora of influences, including Eastern European folk, American popular music and traditional Chinese music.

Each movement of Ei, jauga jauga is a response to one of the traditional north Lithuanian dance pieces called Sutartinės, dissonant and distinctive. The four movements may be grouped into pairs: the first and third are lively and animated, contrasting with the second and last which are slow and haunting.

‘Ošei Pati, Martala’ is a vigorous, spiky movement in which the instruments overlap in canon to create a heterophonic texture characterised by its rhythmic vitality more than clear melodic elements.

Short motivic units propel the movement forwards, with overlapping ostinati creating momentum until they are halted by the wittily abrupt ending.

piano introduction accentuated by cello drone, setting the scene for a powerful melody sung by the clarinettist, Žilvinas Brazauskas, and answered by the cello. The harmony is static, with the piano used to create impressionistic swathes of sound, punctuated by voice and cello. The folk-like atmosphere is further enhanced by the music’s rhythmic freedom, articulated with conversational spontaneity. ‘Išjoja Joja, Sodauto’, is based on four Sutartinės and is characterised by its rhythmic impetus and intricate textures, Hoffman ratcheting up the tension via minimalistic devices but concluding with a softer, more contemplative postlude. In ‘Ei, jauga jauga’ a haunting melody is heard five times in different guises, first on the piano, decorated by a delicate, higher-pitched version in the upper register with gentle interjections from the clarinet and pizzicato cello. The clarinet takes up the melody, enveloped by the piano’s ornamental texture and underpinned by the cello’s drone, after which all three instruments play the theme. There is a pointillistic episode, then piano and pizzicato cello play the theme, sombre and mysterious, to close the movement, the piano’s left hand rumbling like storm-clouds receding into the distance.

Mykolas Natalevičius (b. 1985) has garnered considerable acclaim for his compositions, alongside his work as a pianist, organist, singer and conductor. His initial field of study was in the fine arts, but ultimately his love of music took over.

Natalevičius studied composition at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, where he now works as a lecturer, and at the Danish Institute

of Electronic Music. He has won numerous awards, including the Young Artist Prize from the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture in 2012. Natalevičius was appointed the Chairman of the Lithuanian Composers’ Union in 2017, the same year in which he composed Echoes of Silence. This work is dedicated to political prisoners in Russia forced to build the “transpolar mainline” railroad, intended to connect the cities of Salekhard and Igarka, between 1947 and 1953. Thousands of these workers died, and Echoes of Silence is a reflection on this tragic chapter in Russia’s history. Natalevičius’ doctoral thesis explored the processes of drone music, and this area of interest is evident in Echoes of Silence, in which pedal notes support more animated gestures from each of the three instruments, including sliding glissandi. In common with some of Hoffman’s dances for Trio Agora, Natalevičius uses planes of tonality contrasted with almost improvisatory outbursts. Yet there is also a driving tension bubbling beneath the surface that eventually boils over, ushering in a watery piano texture, its droplets illuminated by the clarinet’s sustained lines and supported by the cello’s drone.

Algirdas Klova (b. 1958) grew up in a fascinating environment; his uncle was the important composer Vytautas Klova (1926-2009), whose music came to the fore after the Soviet annexation of Lithuania, following which a union of Lithuanian composers was formed, in 1948. Like Hoffman, Algirdas Klova has absorbed an eclectic range of musical influences, including folk, jazz, and country styles such as bluegrass, as well as more conventionally

classical traditions. As an ethnomusicologist, Klova has compiled numerous volumes of Lithuanian folk music. In Ferihymnia (2017), written in memory of a close friend, Klova unfolds a timeless Lithuanian folk melody on the cello, echoed and answered by the clarinet and piano in a gently canonic texture based on the particular kind of polyphony found in Sutartinės. There is a pithier section in which the instruments articulate the pulse with greater emphasis, after which Klova hypnotically enriches the writing, gradually returning us to the lyricism of the opening. The work represents a fusion of ancient and modern, at times evoking medieval music in its use of folk idioms and open harmonies, yet executed with a minimalistic manipulation of textural evolution.

Juta Pranulytė (b. 1993), like Mykolas Natalevičius, studied at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre. She went on to further compositional studies at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and at the Victorian College of the Arts, part of the University of Melbourne, and attended the summer school at Darmstadt among others. Her music has been performed by groups including the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Dunedin Consort, and was selected for the Anthology of Lithuanian Art Music of the 21st Century. In Baltic mythology, Lada is a powerful matriarchal goddess.

Throughout LADA (2017), a hymn to the goddess, Juta Pranulytė weaves a tapestry of expressionistic gestures, exploring an array of textural and tonal devices such as glissandi, harmonics, detuning effects, exhalation and flutter-tonguing in the

clarinet, and percussive piano writing. Rhythms are derived from the rhythm of words associated with the goddess.

In common with Hoffman and Klova, Jonas Jurkūnas (b.1978) is a musician who traverses a broad spectrum of styles. In the case of Jurkūnas, this approach extends to electronica, multimedia and interdisciplinary projects including film and theatre, and the fusion of pop and classical idioms.

Audiodoodle #2 is an instance of Jurkūnas’ preference for minimalist procedures. The composer adapted points on a real doodle in one of his notebooks to create a musical matrix, which was then cut into fragments, repeated and reversed to create an intricate aural collage. In ‘fragmented, unanswered (question?)’ the material is based on short, playful fragments that recur and subtly evolve. The central movement, ‘retrograde dance’, is just that: an animated movement of motifs heard in different guises, backwards and forwards.

Finally, ‘audio glitch’ may be heard as a pulsating evocation of the blips created by audio devices, with minimalistic repetitions and shifts evoking the jerky aural experience of barely-functioning technology that is swiftly spinning out of control.

Juozas Naujalis (1869-1934) is considered by many to be the father of Lithuanian music. He studied in Warsaw, Poland and in Regensburg, Germany, and founded several important Lithuanian musical institutions, including the Daina Society, which promoted Lithuanian folk music, and a School of Organists in Kaunas, 7 7

where he was also Rector of the Music School.

Naujalis specialised in choral and organ works, and originally composed Svajonė (‘Dream’) for string quartet in 1921. We hear an arrangement by Žilvinas Brazauskas; the creamy melody is perfectly suited to the timbre of the clarinet, with the cello line intertwining in an intimate dialogue, enriched by the piano. It’s an exquisite piece, reinforcing this programme’s message that Lithuanian music of all eras is a teeming pool of creativity whose depths deserve to be explored, its treasures shared.

We formed by accident, almost, in one of those quick twists of fate in which two groups of two become one group of three. It was a few weeks before Žilvinas’ bachelor exam at Lübeck Conservatory, in Germany, and he got some bad news: the pianist with whom he had planned to perform had to cancel. On the programme was Beethoven’s Gassenhauer Trio, Op. 11 and he was one-third short. After a long, difficult day of planning his possible next move, he decided to quite literally phone a friend, asking a classmate from his music faculty in Lithuania if he’d be willing to fill in. By the end of the phone call, it was clear: Robertas would be able to make the performance. And by the end of the performance, it was equally clear: we were a trio.

The first years were not easy. We had a new ensemble spread over three countries: after his studies, Žilvinas moved to Berlin, while Natania moved to Brussels and Robertas continued his studies in Glasgow. During that period, we found our name during a trip to the Parlamentarium Museum in Brussels: Agora, our musical meeting place that would transcend our logistical separation.

We recorded our first album, Youth, in 2016. It was a wonderful experience and opportunity for us to explore, both in terms of repertoire and arrangement, and in terms of CD production. The programme was carefully crafted around the Gassenhauer Trio, as was only fitting in light of our origins.

We continued to meet for rehearsals and performances, and participated in many festivals such as the Schiermonnikoog Festival (Holland), Le Strade D’Europa and Opera Barga (both Italy), playing in halls around Europe such as the Kaunas Philharmonic (Lithuania), Budapest Music Centre (Hungary), and the Auditorium del Parco in L’Aquila (Italy).

2018 was a turning-point in our life as an ensemble. It was the year that Robertas and Natania joined Žilvinas in Berlin, and the year that we had our first encounters with Eberhard Feltz, a mentor whose influence on our ensemble could be felt almost immediately. In fact, it was just a few months after we began taking four-hour-long, break-less lessons with him that we were awarded the first prize at the Anton Rubinstein competition in Düsseldorf, Germany. And our work with him, with the invaluable work we were also able to do with Martin Spangenberg and Kirill Gerstein during that year, led us to start a Masters course in chamber music together at the HfM Hanns Eisler.

In 2020, this project reaches a special part of our journey together. We delved into Lithuanian tradition and into our own history; Natania’s father, Joel Hoffman, was a huge source of guidance throughout the process. We hope that this project can transmit, in music, the journey of connection that it has been for us.

DEU 2018 feierte das wiederhergestellte Litauen sein 100-jähriges Jubiläum. Dies sollte jedoch nicht mit 100 Jahren Freiheit für das Land verwechselt werden; denn in jenen Jahren ging der Anspruch auf dieses Gebiet zwischen Deutschland, Polen und Russland hin und her, bis Litauen 1990 seine Unabhängigkeit von der UdSSR erklärte. Das Land liegt genau an den Bruchlinien zwischen Ost und West, trägt die Narben vieler politischer Erschütterungen und bietet gleichzeitig ein einzigartiges kulturelles Reservoir, geformt durch seine geopolitische Lage.

Wir haben ein Projekt aufgenommen, das unserem Trio viel bedeutet: ein Programm, das den Reichtum des litauischen Erbes feiert, seiner Folklore, der Geschichte, der Tradition und der Vielfalt sowie den Reichtum dessen, was sich auf diesem Gebiet abspielte. Alle drei haben wir unterschiedliche Hintergründe in Litauen.

Wir alle haben dort geborene und begrabene Familienmitglieder. Jede unserer Familien machte das Land zu ihrer Heimat und gehörte gleichzeitig verschiedenen Volksgruppen an: der litauischen, aber auch der jüdischen, polnischen und russischen.

Aus diesem Grunde wollten wir ein Programm aufnehmen, das so vielfältig und abwechslungsreich ist wie unsere eigene Lebenserfahrung, und gleichzeitig die Essenz des Landes und seiner Menschen erfassen. Wir haben fünf Komponisten beauftragt, Werke für uns zu schreiben: Drei, die sich spezifisch mit der litauischen Tradition des Sutartinė befassen – einem Volkslied, das von der UNESCO auf die Repräsentative Liste des Immateriellen Kulturerbes der Menschheit gesetzt wurde, jedoch drastisch unterschiedliche stilistische Ansätze verfolgt. Die beiden restlichen Werke gehen in eine andere Richtung: Das eine befasst sich mit der zeitgenössischen litauischen Musiklandschaft und das andere mit der Geschichte der litauischen Zwangsarbeit in Sibirien.

Diese fünf Werke wurden 2017 in Auftrag gegeben und uraufgeführt, um 100 Jahre wiedererstandenes Litauen zu feiern. Sie ehren letztendlich Litauens 30 Jahre wirklicher Unabhängigkeit, eine Hommage an ein Land, das sowohl bemerkenswert jung als auch wahrhaftig alt ist.

Kurze Motive treiben den Satz vorwärts, wobei überlappende Ostinati Impulse erzeugen, bis sie durch das witzig abrupte Ende abgebremst werden. „Motula Mano, Širdela” beginnt mit einer umfangreichen Klaviereinführung, die von einem Pedalton akzentuiert wird und die Szene für eine kraftvolle Melodie bereitet, die vom Klarinettisten Žilvinas Brazauskas gesungen und vom Cello beantwortet wird. Die Harmonie ist statisch, wobei das Klavier verwendet wird, um impressionistische Klangschwaden zu erzeugen, die von Stimme und Cello unterstrichen werden. Nach einer pointilistischen Episode spielen Klavier und Cello in Pizzicato das düstere und mysteriöse Thema, um den Satz zu schließen, wobei die linke Hand des Klaviers ein Donnergrollen erzeugt, das in der Ferne verklingt.

Mykolas Natalevičius (*1985) hat neben seiner Arbeit als Pianist, Organist, Sänger und Dirigent große Anerkennung für seine Kompositionen gefunden. Sein anfängliches Studienfach war die bildende Kunst, aber letztendlich gewann seine Liebe zur Musik den Vorrang. Natalevičius studierte Komposition an der Litauischen Akademie für Musik und Theater, wo er heute als Dozent arbeitet, wie auch am dänischen Institut für elektronische Musik. Er hat zahlreiche Preise gewonnen, darunter den Preis für junge Künstler des litauischen Kulturministeriums im Jahr 2012.

Natalevičius wurde 2017 zum Vorsitzenden der Litauischen Komponistenvereinigung ernannt, in demselben Jahr, in dem er Echoes of Silence komponierte. Dieses Werk ist politischen Gefangenen in Russland gewidmet, die zwischen 1947 und 1953 zum Bau der „Polarkreiseisenbahn“ gezwungen wurden, die die Städte Salekhard und Igarka verbinden sollte. Diese basiert auf der besonderen Art der Polyphonie, wie sie in Sutartinès zu finden ist. Es folgt ein markanter Abschnitt, in dem die Instrumente den Takt mit

größerer Betonung artikulieren, wonach Klova die Textur hypnotisch bereichert, um dann allmählich zur Lyrik der Einleitung zurückzufinden. Das Werk stellt eine Verschmelzung von Antike und Moderne dar und erinnert zuweilen an mittelalterliche Musik in der Verwendung von Volksmusik und offenen Harmonien, die jedoch minimalistisch dargeboten werden.

Juta Pranulytė (*1993) studierte wie Mykolas Natalevičius an der Litauischen Akademie für Musik und Theater. Zusätzlich studierte sie Komposition am Royal Conservatoire of Scotland und am Victorian College of the Arts der University of Melbourne und besuchte unter anderem die Sommerschule in Darmstadt. Ihre Musik wurde von Ensemble wie dem BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra und Dunedin Consort aufgeführt und für die Anthologie der litauischen Kunstmusik des 21. Jahrhunderts ausgewählt. In der baltischen Mythologie ist Lada eine mächtige matriarchalische Göttin.

In LADA (2017), einer Hymne an die Göttin, webt Juta Pranulytė gleichsam einen Wandteppich expressionistischer Gesten und erforscht eine große Anzahl von strukturellen und tonalen Kunstgriffen wie Glissandi, Flageolett, Verstimmungseffekte, Luftgeräusche und Flatterzunge der Klarinette sowie eine perkussive Schreibweise für das Klavier.

Rhythmen werden aus dem Sprachrhythmus der Wörter abgeleitet, die mit der Göttin in Zusammenhang gebracht werden.

Jonas Jurkūnas (*1978) ist ein Musiker, der wie Hoffman und Klova ein breites Spektrum von 14 14

Stilen durchläuft. Im Fall von Jurkūnas erstreckt sich seine Vorgehensweise auf elektronische, multimediale und interdisziplinäre Projekte wie Film und Theater sowie auf die Verschmelzung von Pop und klassischen Ausdrucksformen.

Audiodoodle #2 ist ein Beispiel dafür, dass Jurkūnas minimalistische Verfahren bevorzugt.

Der Komponist verband Punkte auf einer Kritzelei in einem seiner Notizbücher, um eine musikalische Matrix zu erstellen, die dann in Fragmente geschnitten, wiederholt und umgekehrt wurde, um eine komplizierte Klangcollage zu erstellen. In „fragmented, unanswered (question?)” basiert das Material auf kurzen, verspielten Fragmenten, die sich wiederholen und subtil weiterentwickeln. Der zentrale Satz, der „krebsförmige Tanz”, ist genau das: ein animierter Lauf von Motiven, die in verschiedenen Formen vorwärts und rückwärts zu hören sind.

Schließlich kann „audio glitch” als pulsierende Heraufbeschwörung der von Audiogeräten erzeugten Pieptöne mit minimalistischen Wiederholungen und Lagenwechsel gehört werden, die an die stotternde Hörerfahrung einer schlecht funktionierenden Technologie erinnern, die schnell außer Kontrolle gerät.

Juozas Naujalis (1869-1934) wird von vielen als Vater der litauischen Musik angesehen. Er studierte in Warschau, Polen und in Regensburg, Deutschland, und gründete mehrere wichtige litauische Musikinstitutionen, darunter die DainaGesellschaft, die die litauische Volksmusik fördert, und eine Organistenschule in Kaunas, wo er auch Rektor der Musikschule war. Naujalis spezialisierte sich auf Chor- und Orgelwerke und komponierte 1921 Svajonė („Traum“) ursprünglich für Streichquartett. Wir hören ein Arrangement von Žilvinas Brazauskas; die geschmeidige Melodie passt perfekt zum Timbre der Klarinette, mit der sich die Cello-Melodie in einem innigen Dialog verflicht, bereichert durch das Klavier. Es ist ein exquisites Stück, das die Botschaft dieses Programms bekräftigt, dass litauische Musik aller Epochen ein Quell an Kreativität ist, deren Tiefen und Schätze es verdienen, erkundet und bekannt gemacht zu werden.

Wir haben fast zufällig in einer dieser überraschenden Wendungen des Schicksals zusammengefunden, in denen zwei Zweiergruppen zu einer Dreiergruppe wurden. Es dauerte einige Wochen, bis Žilvinas Bachelor-Prüfung am Konservatorium Lübeck in Deutschland stattfand, und er bekam schlechte Nachrichten: Der Pianist, mit dem er auftreten wollte, musste absagen. Auf dem Programm stand Beethovens Gassenhauer Trio Op. 11, und nun fehlte der dritte Mann. Nach einem langen, schwierigen Tag, an dem er seinen möglichen nächsten Schritt zu planen versuchte, beschloss er, einen Freund anzurufen und einen Kommilitonen von seiner Musikfakultät in Litauen zu fragen, ob er bereit wäre, einzuspringen. Am Ende des Telefonats stand fest: Robertas würde den Part übernehmen.

Und am Ende der Aufführung stand ebenso fest: Wir sind ein Trio.

Die ersten Jahre waren nicht einfach. Die Mitglieder des Trios lebten in drei verschiedenen Ländern: nach seinem Abschluss zog Žilvinas nach Berlin, Natania nach Brüssel, und Robertas setzte sein Studium in Glasgow fort. In dieser Zeit fanden wir den Namen für unser Trio bei einem Ausflug ins Parlamentarium in Brüssel: Agora, unser musikalischer Treffpunkt, der uns unsere räumliche Trennung überwinden ließ.

Wir haben 2016 unser erstes Album, Youth, aufgenommen. Es war eine wundervolle Erfahrung und Gelegenheit für uns, sowohl in Bezug auf Repertoire und Arrangement als auch hinsichtlich der CD-Produktion etwas dazuzulernen.

Das Programm wurde sorgfältig um das Gassenhauer Trio herum ausgearbeitet, im Einklang mit unserer Herkunft.

Wir trafen uns weiterhin zu Proben und Aufführungen und nahmen an vielen Festivals wie dem Schiermonnikoog Festival (Holland), Le Strade D’Europa und der Opera Barga (beide Italien) teil, und wir spielten in Konzerthallen quer durch Europa wie der Kaunas Philharmonie (Litauen), dem Budapester Musikzentrum (Ungarn) und dem Auditorium del Parco in L’Aquila (Italien).

2018 war ein Wendepunkt in unserem Leben als Ensemble. Es war das Jahr, in dem Robertas und Natania zu Žilvinas nach Berlin kamen, und das Jahr, in dem wir unsere ersten Begegnungen mit Eberhard Feltz hatten, einem Mentor, dessen Einfluss auf unser Ensemble fast sofort spürbar wurde. Tatsächlich erhielten wir nur wenige Monate, nachdem wir vier Stunden lang pausenlosen Unterricht bei ihm genommen hatten, den ersten Preis beim Anton Rubinstein-Wettbewerb in Düsseldorf. Und unser Studium bei ihm, mit der unschätzbaren Arbeit, die wir in diesem Jahr gleichzeitig auch mit Martin Spangenberg und Kirill Gerstein leisten konnten, führte uns dazu, gemeinsam einen Meisterkurs in Kammermusik an der Staatliche Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler (Berlin) zu beginnen.

Im Jahr 2020 erreicht dieses Projekt einen besonderen Höhepunkt unserer gemeinsamen Arbeit. Wir haben uns mit der litauischen Tradition und unserer eigenen Geschichte befasst. Natanias Vater, Joel Hoffman, war für uns während des gesamten Prozesses eine große Orientierungshilfe. Wir hoffen, dass dieses Projekt durch seine Musik die Erfahrung der Gemeinsamkeit vermitteln kann, die es für uns bedeutet hat.

LIT 2018 metais minėjome atkurtos Lietuvos 100-metį, tačiau to nereikėtų painioti su šimtu šalies laisvės metų.

Lietuva ar jos teritorijos kelis kartus buvo okupuotos skirtingų šalių, tarp jų Vokietijos, Lenkijos ir Rusijos, kol 1990 metais paskelbė nepriklausomybę nuo Sovietų Sąjungos. Šalis visada buvo tarp Rytų ir Vakarų. Pažymėta daugelio politinių sukrėtimų randų, bet kartu turi ir unikalų kultūrinį paveldą, kuriam didžiulę įtaką padarė šalies geopolitinis kraštovaizdis. Šis projektas turi ypatingą reikšmę mūsų ansambliui: tai programa, garsinanti lietuvių paveldo, tautosakos, istorijos, tradicijų ir įvairovės turtingumą. Kiekvienas iš mūsų ansamblio turi skirtingą ryšį su Lietuva, tačiau visų mūsų protėviai yra gimę arba mirę šioje žemėje. Kiekviena iš mūsų šeimų šią šalį laikė savo namais, kartu priklausydama skirtingoms etninėms grupėms: ne tik lietuvių, bet ir žydų, lenkų bei rusų.

Dėl šios priežasties norėjome įrašyti daugialypę ir įvairią programą, tuo pačiu gilindamiesi į šio krašto ir jo žmonių prigimtį. Paprašėme penkių kompozitorių sukurti kūrinius mūsų ansambliui. Trys nagrinėjo lietuvišką „sutartinės“ tradiciją, priklausančią UNESCO reprezentaciniam žmonijos nematerialaus kultūros paveldo sąrašui. Kiti du darbai eina kita linkme: vienas gilinasi į šiuolaikinį Lietuvos muzikinį kraštovaizdį, o kitas tyrinėja priverstinio politinių kalinių darbo Sovietų Sąjungos gulaguose istoriją. Šios kompozicijos, pirmą kartą atliktos 2017 metais, siekiant paminėti artėjantį atkurtos Lietuvos šimtmetį, galiausiai pagerbs trisdešimt nepriklausomos Lietuvos metų. Tai duoklė šaliai, kuri tuo pat metu yra ir nepaprastai jauna ir turinti ypatingai turtingą istoriją.

Trio Agora

Pastaraisiais metais Baltijos šalių muzika sulaukia vis didesnio susidomėjimo. „Trio Agora“ vizijos pagrindas yra lietuvių kultūra. Šiam albumui sukurti kūriniai atspindi trio ištakas; didelis dėmesys skiriamas autentiškam lietuviškos muzikos atlikimui, kurios šaknys yra tokios pat turtingos ir įvairios, kaip ir šios programos kūrinių. Ankstyvoji lietuvių muzika įsisavino Grigališkojo choralo giedojimą, o XV-XVI amžiuose lietuvių kompozitoriai buvo įtakoti Olandiškojo stiliaus mišių ir motetinių polifonijų.

Karališkųjų rūmų, aukštesniosios klasės, bajorų muzika buvo svarbus kūrybiškumo centras iki pat Lietuvos aristokratijos nuosmukio XVIII amžiuje, kuomet muzika buvo vis labiau demokratizuojama.

Vilniaus universitete nuo XIX amžiaus buvo skatinama mokytis daugelio muzikos disciplinų, o kompozitoriai siekė įtvirtinti nacionalinį stilių; XX amžiaus ketvirtajame dešimtmetyje kai kurie siekė šį tautinį stilių, apimantį liaudies muziką, susieti su modernesniais kompozicijos principais. Posūkis įvyko 1940 metais, kuomet Lietuva buvo prijungta prie Sovietų Sąjungos. Tikėtasi, kad kompozitoriai prisitaikys prie naujos santvarkos. Cenzūra buvo griežta, o šio laikmečio muzika neišvengiamai linkusi atitikti sovietines direktyvas. 1960-ieji atnešė didesnę laisvę ir vis plačiau naudojamus metodus, įskaitant serializmą. Šiandien lietuvių kompozitoriai apjungia įvairius muzikos stilius,

pradedant šalies liaudies tradicijomis ir baigiant džiazu bei pop muzika. „Trio Agora“ pristato programą, atspindinčią šiuos skirtingus stiliaus ir žanrų aspektus.

Joelis Hoffmanas (g. 1953 m.) yra kompozitorius ir pianistas, kurio muzikos kalbai įtaką darė daugybė kultūrų. Gimęs Vankuveryje ir šiuo metu gyvenantis Niujorke, J. Hoffmanas studijavo Velso universitete Kardife ir Juillard mokykloje Niujorke su profesoriais, įskaitant Elliott Carter, Milton Babbitt, Alun Hoddinott, Arnold Whittall, Vincent Persichetti, Easley Blackwood. Hoffmanas savo ruožtu daugiau kaip 30 metų dėstė kompoziciją Sinsinačio universitete ir įkūrė festivalius JAV ir Europoje, savo šiuolaikinės muzikos festivaliu „Music X“ apimdamas abu žemynus, pirmiausia Sinsinatyje ir vėliau Šveicarijoje. Šis platus kultūrinis spektras persmelkia J. Hoffmano kompozicinę kūrybą, apimančią daugybę įtakų, įskaitant Rytų Europos liaudies, Amerikos populiariąją ir kinų tradicinę muziką.

Kiekviena Ei, jauga jauga dalis yra kompozitoriaus atsakas į vieną iš tradicinių šiaurės Lietuvos regiono liaudies dainų, vadinamų sutartinėmis. Keturios dalys gali būti suskirstytos į poras: pirmoji ir trečioji dalys yra gyvos ir judrios, priešingai antrajai ir

ketvirtajai, kurios yra lėtos ir tamsios. Ošei Pati, Martala – tai energinga, žaisminga dalis, kurios metu instrumentai persidengia kanonu, sukurdami heterofoninę faktūrą, kuriai būdingas ritmingas gyvybingumas, o ne aiškūs melodiniai elementai.

Trumpi motyviniai vienetai išjudina pirmyn, o vienas per kitą tarp instrumentų besikartojantys ostinato sukuria pagreitį, kol viską pertraukia šmaikščiai netikėta pabaiga. Motula Mano, Širdela prasideda erdvia fortepijono įžanga, kurią pabrėžia violončelės akompanimentas. Ši įžanga paruošia sceną galingai melodijai, įdainuotai klarnetininko Žilvino Brazausko. Harmonija šioje dalyje yra statiška, fortepijonas naudojamas impresionistinėms garso plokštumoms kurti, sukuriant kontrastą tarp balso ir violončelės partijų. Liaudies atmosferą dar labiau sustiprina ritminė muzikos laisvė, skambanti lyg spontaniškas pokalbis. Išjoja Joja, Sodauto, paremtas keturiomis sutartinėmis, pasižymi ritmingu impulsu ir sudėtingomis faktūromis. J.Hoffmanas didina įtampą naudodamas minimalistinius kompozicijos metodus, tačiau užbaigia švelnesniu, labiau kontempliuojančiu postliudu. Ei, jauga jauga – melodija, penkis kartus girdima skirtingais pavidalais; pirmiausia fortepijonu, papuošta subtiliu, aukšto registro skambesiu bei švelniai atitariant klarnetui ir violončelei. Klarnetas perima melodiją, apgaubtą fortepijono ornamentine faktūra

ir įrėmintą violončelės pritarimu, po kurio visi trys instrumentai temą groja unisonu. Po pointilistinio intarpo fortepijonas ir violončelė paskutinį kartą atlieka temą, skambančią niūriai ir paslaptingai.

Kūrinio pabaigoje, fortepijono kairiosios rankos faktūra skamba lyg griaudžiantys audros debesys, tolstantys tolumoje.

Mykolas Natalevičius (g. 1985 m.) už savo kompozicinius darbus, o taip pat kaip atlikėjas, pianistas, vargonininkas, dainininkas ir dirigentas, yra sulaukęs nemažo pripažinimo. Pradinė jo studijų sritis buvo vaizduojamasis menas, tačiau galiausiai meilė muzikai tapo prioritetu. M. Natalevičius studijavo kompoziciją Lietuvos muzikos ir teatro akademijoje, kur dabar dirba dėstytoju, ir Danijos elektroninės muzikos institute. Jis yra laimėjęs daugybę apdovanojimų, įskaitant 2012 metais Lietuvos kultūros ministerijos Jaunojo menininko premiją. M.Natalevičius buvo paskirtas Lietuvos kompozitorių sąjungos pirmininku 2017 m., tais pačiais metais, kai jis sukūrė Echoes of Silence. Šis kūrinys skirtas politiniams/GULAG‘o kaliniams Rusijoje, kurie 1947–1953 m. buvo priversti nutiesti „transpoliarinio geležinkelio“ liniją, skirtą sujungti Salekhardo ir Igarkos miestus. Tūkstančiai šių darbuotojų mirė, o Echoes of Silence atspindi šį tragišką Rusijos istorijos skyrių. M. Natalevičiaus

daktaro disertacijoje buvo nagrinėjami Drone stiliaus komponavimo aspektai ir ši susidomėjimo sritis akivaizdi šiame kūrinyje; vargonų punktas palaiko labiau judrius kiekvieno iš trijų instrumentų gestus, įskaitant slankiojančius glissando efektus. Kaip ir kai kuriose iš J. Hoffmano dalių, M. Natalevičius naudoja tonalumo plokštumas, priešpastatomas jas improvizaciškai skambančiais melodiniais proveržiais. Kūrinio eigoje girdima įtampa, kuri ilgainiui užvirsta, sukurdama vandeningą fortepijono tekstūrą, ornamentiškai pritariant klarneto linijai ir violončelei.

Algirdas Klova (g. 1958 m.), kaip ir J. Hoffmanas, yra įsisavinęs eklektišką muzikinių stilių spektrą, apimantį liaudies, džiazo ir kantri stilius, o taip ir klasikinės kompozicijos tradicijas. Būdamas etnomuzikologas, A. Klova sudarė daugybę lietuvių liaudies muzikos tomų. Ferihymnijoje, parašytoje artimo draugo atminimui, violončelė atskleidžia nesenstančią lietuvių liaudies melodiją, ją klarnetas ir fortepijonas atkartoja ir atsako švelniai kanonine tekstūra, pagrįsta sutartinės tipui būdinga polifonija. Vėliau pereinama į guvesnį ritmą, kuriame instrumentai labiau paryškina pulsą, po kurio A. Klova hipnotizuojančiai sujungia sutartinės melodines bei ritmines medžiagas, palaipsniui grąžindamas mus į pradinį lyrišką charakterį.

Kūrinys atspindi senovės ir modernumo susiliejimą, kartais primena viduramžių muziką, naudoja liaudies muzikos savitumą bei atvirą harmoniją, o taip pat minimaliai manipuliuoja faktūros plėtojimą.

Juta Pranulytė (g. 1993 m.), kaip ir Mykolas Natalevičius, studijavo Lietuvos muzikos ir teatro akademijoje. Vėliau ji tęsė kompozicijos studijas Karališkojoje Škotijos konservatorijoje ir Viktorijos menų koledže, esančiame Melburno universitete, be kita ko, lankė vasaros mokyklą Darmštate. Jos muziką atlieka įvairūs ansambliai, įskaitant BBC Škotijos simfoninį orkestrą ir „Dunedin Consort” barokinės muzikos ansamblį. Ji taip pat buvo įtraukta į XXI amžiaus Lietuvos kompozicinės muzikos antologiją. Baltų mitologijoje Lada yra galinga matriarchalinė deivė. Per visą LADĄ, himną deivei, Juta Pranulytė pina ekspresionistinių gestų audinį, išbandydama daugybę faktūrinių ir toninių efektų, tokių kaip glissando, flažolė, detonacija, iškvėpimas ir frullato klarnete bei perkusiniai garsai, išgaunami fortepijonu. Kūrinio ritminiai elementai yra kilę iš žodžių ritmo grupių, susijusių su šia deive.

Jonas Jurkūnas (g. 1978 m.), kaip ir J. Hoffmanas bei A. Klova, yra muzikantas, apimantis platų stilių spektrą. J. Jurkūno atveju šis požiūris apima

elektronikos, multimedijos ir tarpdisciplininius projektus, įskaitant kiną, teatrą, bei pop ir klasikinių idėjų sintezę. Audiodoodle #2 yra puikus kompozitoriaus polinkio į minimalistinio komponavimo stilių pavyzdys. Kompozitorius pritaikė taškus ant tikro piešinio vienoje iš savo užrašų knygelių, kad sukurtų muzikinę matricą, kuri vėliau buvo padalinta į fragmentus, pakartota ir apversta. Tokiu būdu buvo sukurtas sudėtingas fonetinis koliažas. Pirmosios dalies Fragmented, unanswered (question?) muzikinė medžiaga pagrįsta trumpais, žaismingais fragmentais, kurie pasikartoja ir subtiliai vystosi. Antroji dalis, pavadinimu retrograde dance skamba būtent taip: judrūs motyvai, išgirsti įvairiais pavidalais, varijuojami pirmyn ir atgal. Galiausiai, trečioji dalis audio glitch gali būti išgirsta kaip pulsuojantis technologinių garso įrenginių sukuriamų pliūpsnių atkūrimas su minimalistiniais pasikartojimais ir pasikeitimais.

Juozas Naujalis (1869-1934) daugelio laikomas

lietuviškosios muzikos patriarchu. Jis studijavo Varšuvoje (Lenkija) ir Regensburge (Vokietija) ir įkūrė keletą svarbių Lietuvos muzikos institucijų, tarp jų - draugiją „Daina“, kuri propagavo lietuvių liaudies muziką, bei vargonininkų mokyklą Kaune, kur jis taip pat ėjo muzikos mokyklos direktoriaus pareigas. Naujalis specializavosi chorinėje ir vargonų muzikoje, savo vieną žymiausių kūrinių Svajonė sukūrė styginių kvartetui 1921 metais. Šiame albume girdime Žilvino Brazausko aranžuotę; jautri melodija puikiai tinka klarneto tembrui, violončelės frazės persipina intymiame dialoge, o fortepijonas praturtina harmoningomis spalvomis. Tai nepaprastas kūrinys, patvirtinantis šios programos koncepciją; visų laikų lietuvių muzika yra gausus kūrybos fondas, kurio gelmes verta ištirti, o jo lobiais dalintis.

Trio susikūrė atsitiktinai, beveik per vieną iš tų greitų likimo posūkių, kuriame dvi dviejų asmenų grupės tampa viena trijų asmenų grupe. Likus kelioms savaitėms iki Žilvino baigiamojo egzamino koncerto Liubeko konservatorijoje, Vokietijoje, jis gavo blogą žinią: pianistas, su kuriuo jis planavo laikyti savo egzaminą, staiga negalėjo dalyvauti. Programoje turėjo nuskambėti L. van Bethoveno Trio op. 11, „Gassenhauer“, bet trūko vieno žmogaus. Po ilgos ir sunkios dienos Žilvinas, planuodamas savo galimą tolimesnį žingsnį, nusprendė tiesiog paskambinti senam klasės draugui ir paklausti, ar jis galėtų atskirsti iš Glazgo ir prisijungti prie baigiamojo egzamino. Pasibaigus telefono skambučiui, buvo aišku: Robertas atvyks. O koncerto pabaigoje buvo lygiai taip pat aišku: mes tapome trio.

Pirmieji metai nebuvo lengvi. Mūsų ansamblis buvo pasklidęs trijose šalyse: po studijų Liubeke Žilvinas persikėlė į Berlyną, Natania – į Briuselį, o Robertas tęsė studijas Glazge. Tuo laikotarpiu mes radome savo vardą kelionėje į Parlamentariumą – Europos Parlamento lankytojų centrą Briuselyje: „Agora“, mūsų muzikinių susitikimų vieta, kuri kompensuos ansamblio logistinį atitolimą.

Pirmąjį savo albumą „Youth“ įrašėme 2016 metais. Tai buvo nuostabi patirtis bei galimybė pasinerti į naujo repertuaro, aranžuočių bei kompaktinių diskų produkcijos teritorijas. Programos atspirties tašku tapo „Gassenhauer Trio“, kuris tuo metu tapo neatskiriamu ansamblio kūriniu.

Mes ir toliau susitikdavome įvairiuose miestuose repeticijoms ir pasirodymams bei dalyvavome daugelyje festivalių, tokių kaip „Schiermonnikoog“ ​​festivalis (Nyderlandai), „Le Strade D’Europa“ ir „Opera Barga“ (Italija), grojome įvairiose Europos koncertų salėse, tokiose kaip Kauno filharmonija (Lietuva), Budapešto muzikos centras (Vengrija) ir „Auditorium del Parco“ L’Aquila mieste (Italija).

2018 metai tapo svarbiu posūkiu mūsų, kaip ansamblio, gyvenime. Tai buvo metai, kai Robertas ir Natania prisijungė prie Žilvino Berlyne, bei metai, kai mes pirmą kartą susitikome su Eberhardu Feltzu, mentoriumi. Jo įtaka mūsų ansambliui buvo jaučiama beveik iškart. Praėjus vos keliems mėnesiams po pirmųjų keturias valandas trunkančių pamokų, buvome apdovanoti pirmąja premija Antono Rubinšteino konkurse Diuseldorfe, Vokietijoje. Mūsų darbas su juo bei papildomos pamokos su Martinu Spangenbergu ir Kirilu Gersteinu paskatino pradėti kamerinės muzikos magistro studijas Berlyno Hanns Eisler aukštojoje muzikos mokykloje.

2020 metais šis projektas pasiekė ypatingą mūsų kelionės tikslą. Mes gilinomės ne tik į lietuviškas tradicijas, bet taip pat ir į savo asmeninę istoriją. Natanios tėtis Joelis Hoffmanas, buvo didelis rekomendacijų šaltinis viso proceso metu.

Mes tikimės, kad šis projektas perteiks muzikinę tapatybės jungčių kelionę, kokią patyrėme ir mes.
