The music from Erwin Schulhoff, Paul Hindemith, Hans Gál, to Werner Heider and Edison Denisov, reflects our common European identity. By working on it, it takes us back to that time, just as a scent can. Even though neither of us lived or experienced that era, we have a hint of the past in us. We are a small part of this history and cannot ignore it. Both of us live far away from our cultural heritage on an island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, and that experience allows us to reflect on our original culture from a new perspective. The listener will hear Middle-European culture very clearly in this music, for example in the beginning of Paul Hindemith’s Sonata. Likewise, the text of the poem written on the score before the last movement underlines the mood for this whole CD: “Your task, it is, amidst confusion, rush and noise To grasp the lasting, calm, and meaningful And finding it anew, to hold and treasure it.”

The nostalgic reflection and hope for the future in this poem give me a feeling of stability in a world of many changes. The warm sound of the alto saxophone expresses this feeling, and that sound has always enchanted and captured me. Without that sound I might not have chosen my profession with such profound conviction. In my life as a classical saxophonist I have always aimed for an even and warm tone.

My pianist, Aladár Rácz, introduced me to the works of Hans Gál, his fellow countryman, with whose pieces he is very familiar and which he has played for a long time. In Gál’s piece, Suite, Op.102, the soft, warm sound of the alto saxophone can be fully experienced.

This CD contains saxophone music from Middle- and Eastern Europe composed between the years 1930-1970. The oldest piece, Hot-Sonate, is from the year 1930, around the time when the youngest composers on this CD were born – Edison Denisov in 1929 and Werner Heider in 1930. This collection reflects well Europe’s turbulent mood during the middle of the last century; one of a World War and civil and social rebellions. These historical events did not pass quietly by these composers – in fact, three of them, Hindemith, Gál and Schulhoff, were persecuted by the Nazis during and after 1933. Hindemith managed to escape to the USA and Gál to Britain, but Schulhoff did not survive.

Three of the works on this CD have at least a hint of jazz in them, highlighting the influence jazz had on that composer. As suggested by their titles, these are the works of Schulhoff (Hot-Sonate) and Werner Heider (Sonata in Jazz). Likewise, jazz can be noted in Denisov’s Sonata, for example the walking bass-line that sounds like a plucked bass, and in the piano’s bass notes in the third movement.

La musique d’Erwin Schulhoff, Paul Hindemith, Hans Gál, Werner Heider et Edison Denisov reflète notre identité européenne commune. En nous penchant sur cette identité, nous nous retrouvons transportés dans un moment précis, à l’instar d’une odeur ou d’un parfum. Même si aucun d’entre nous n’a vécu ou connu cette époque, nous avons un soupçon du passé en nous. Nous sommes une petite partie de cette histoire et nous ne pouvons l’ignorer. Nous vivons tous deux loin de notre patrimoine culturel, sur une île au milieu de l’océan Atlantique, et cette expérience nous permet de réfléchir à notre culture d’origine. L’auditeur retrouvera très clairement les couleurs de l’Europe centrale dans cette musique, par exemple au début de la Sonate de Paul Hindemith.

Le son chaud du saxophone alto exprime ce sentiment, et ce son m’a toujours enchanté et captivé.

Sans ce son, je n’aurai sans doute pas choisi ma profession avec une telle conviction profonde. Dans ma carrière de saxophoniste classique, j’ai toujours recherché un ton équilibré et chaleureux.

Mon pianiste, Aladár Rácz, m’a présenté des œuvres de Hans Gál, son compatriote, dont il est très familier et qu’il a joué à maintes reprises. Dans la pièce Suite op. 102 de Gál, le son chaud et feutré du saxophone alto est au premier plan.

Ce CD présente des musiques d’Europe centrale et orientale composées entre les années 1930-1970. La pièce la plus ancienne, Hot-Sonate, date de 1930, vers l’époque où les plus jeunes compositeurs de ce CD sont nés - Edison Denisov en 1929 et Werner Heider en 1930. DEU Die Musik von Erwin Schulhoff, Paul Hindemith, Hans Gál, bis hin zu Werner Heider und Edison Denisov reflektiert unsere gemeinsame europäische Identität. Indem wir uns damit befassen, versetzt es uns zurück in jene Zeit, genau wie es ein Duft vermag.

Auch wenn keiner von uns damals gelebt hat, tragen wir einen Hauch dieser Vergangenheit in uns. Wir sind ein kleiner Teil dieser Geschichte und können uns darüber nun mal nicht hinwegsetzen. Beide von uns leben weit entfernt von unserem kulturellen Erbe auf einer Insel mitten im atlantischen Ozean und es ist diese Erfahrung, die es uns ermöglicht sich unserer ursprünglichen Kultur durch neue Wege zu entsinnen. Der Zuhörer wird die mitteleuropäische Kultur mehr als deutlich in der Musik heraushören, beispielsweise in der Eröffnung von Paul Hindemiths Sonate. Ebenso unterstreicht der Text des Gedichts, das den letzten Satz einleitet, die Stimmung der ganzen CD. „An dir ist‘s hinter Eile, Lärm und Mannigfalt das Ständige, die Stille, Sinn, Gestalt zurückzufinden und neu zu bewahren.“

Aus „Das Posthorn (Zwiegespräch)“ von Paul Hindemith Die nostalgische Reflektion und Hoffnung für die Zukunft in diesem Gedicht geben mir ein Gefühl von Stabilität und Sicherheit in einer Welt voller Veränderungen. Der warme Klang des Alt-Saxofons drückt dieses Gefühl aus und es war dieser Klang, der mich schon immer bezaubert und fasziniert hat. Ohne diesen Klang hätte ich meinen Beruf wohl nicht mit solcher Überzeugung erwählt. Als klassischer Saxofonist habe ich in meinem Leben immer nach einem gleichmäßigen und warmen Klang getrachtet.

Mein Pianist, Aladár Rácz, hat mich an die Werke von Hans Gál herangeführt, einem Landsmann, mit dessen Stücken er sehr vertraut ist und die er seit langem spielt. In Gáls Stück, Suite op. 102, kommt der weiche und warme Klang des Altsaxofons vollends zur Geltung.

Diese CD umfasst Saxofonmusik aus Mittel- und Osteuropa der Jahre 1930 bis 1970. Das älteste Stück, die Hot-Sonate, ist aus 1930, jener Zeit, in der die jüngsten Komponisten auf dieser CD geboren wurden – Edison Denisov im Jahre 1929 und Werner Heider im Jahre 1930. Die Sammlung spiegelt die turbulente Stimmung Europas Mitte des letzten Jahrhunderts wieder, der eines Weltkriegs, wie auch ziviler und sozialer Aufstände. Diese historischen Ereignisse sind nicht spurlos an den Komponisten vorüber gegangen – tatsächlich wurden drei von ihnen, Hindemith, Gál und Schulhoff, von den Nationalsozialisten nach 1933 verfolgt.

Hindemith gelang es in die USA, Gál nach Großbritannien zu flüchten, Schulhoff jedoch überlebte nicht. Drei Werke dieser CD haben einen Hauch von Jazz an sich, und zeugen somit vom Einfluss des Jazz auf den jeweiligen Komponisten. Wie in den Titeln bereits angedeutet wird, handelt es sich hierbei um die Hot Sonate von Schulhoff und die Sonate in Jazz von Werner Heider. Auch in Denisovs Sonate wird der Einfluss des Jazz spürbar, beispielsweise in der laufenden Basslinie, welche wie ein gezupfter Bass erklingt, als auch in den Bassnoten des Pianos im dritten Satz.

Ich hoffe, dass Sie das Hören der Werke dieser großartigen Komponisten genauso genießen, wie Aladár und ich es beim Spielen taten.

Die Suite für Altsaxofon und Klavier op. 102b (1949) von Hans Gál (1890-1987) scheint es sich zum Ziel gesetzt zu haben das Instrument aus der hedonistischen

Während Gál vorgehabt zu haben scheint das Saxofon als Teil der geordneten Welt der deutschen Kammermusik zu präsentieren, so bietet die Hot-Sonate (1930) von Erwin Schulhoff (1894-1942) eine alternative Sicht der Dinge. Schulhoff war ein tschechischer
