I became acquainted with the music of Ramon Lazkano in 2001 through his guitar pieces. I was immediately fascinated with his ideas and his sound palette; somehow, I associated his music to a range of color between white and gray. His is a musical language where harmonics work as shadows and offer glimpses of a music that lives within a very personal and unique instrumental treatment.

Later, together with SMASH ensemble, I came closer to his music, and my feelings about it became more defined: a floating and suspended type of sound, living and dying naturally, drifts in his music, as if life were crafted by human hands.

When Ramon Lazkano first told me about “Laborategia Igeltsoen” (Chalk Laboratory) inspired by Jorge Oteiza’s sculptures, I went through scores and art books looking for a relation between both artists, and I found a link to that suspended sound in Oteiza’s sculptures. These white and gray chalky hues evoke the landscape of the Basque Country where both artists grew and developed. Immediately, we decided to program this cycle of pieces with SMASH ensemble; ironically, the whole cycle doesn’t have a single piece including the guitar.

This recording is a first statement of SMASH ensemble. We found beauty in complex sounds, and our work shows our musical personality and our aesthetic taste. Our feelings for this repertoire are best expressed through the words of the famous Anonymous treatise “On the Sublime”: …The sublime draws the listener not to persuasion, but to ecstasy, because what is wonderful is always accompanied by a sense of bewilderment, and surpasses something merely convincing or charming…

Imagining Introspection The American painter Mark Rothko, according to his biographer James E.B. Breslin, loved words with the prefix trans-, as he strove to capture the meaning of moving forward, and perhaps beyond, in his canvases: Transfer, transit and transmit, yes, but also, and above all, transcendence.

Ramon Lazkano takes his musical cues from varied sources, often literary or visual. The artists share an ability to coax movement out of stasis and to look inward, to some deep recess of the imagination, in order to create works of deceptive simplicity and stark imposition.

Lazkano stands outside the obvious musical allegiances of our time: he is not a spectralist, a clone of Lachenmann, a neo-Romantic, a neo-Dadaist, a postmodernist, a microtonal experimentalist, an improvising composer, or any other typology of neo- or post-. His music, like the Basque culture into which he was born, is unique; his works, by turns phantasmagorical or allegorical, bustling or languid, exist in between and around the ideas and movements in circulation.

His largest work to date, and more of an accumulation of works with linked ideas than a cycle in the usual sense, is Igeltsoen Laborategia / Chalk Laboratory (2001-11).

Its 14 constituent parts are two works entitled Errobi (2008-09); four entitled Egan (2006-11); four entitled Wintersonnenwende (2005-09); three entitled Hatsik (2001-04); and one entitled Laiotz (2003).

The laboratory, the individual components of which span

from duo to 13 players, is also a work drawn from close to home: the Basque sculptor Jorge Oteiza (1908-2003), also not aligned to any particular aesthetic dogma, yet decidedly committed to modernism and progress in the context of historical awareness.

Oteiza, noted for his sculptures of the apostles at the Sanctuary of Arantzazu, tucked amid the airiness of the Aizkorri massif, and for public sculptures on an enormous scale in the Basque country and elsewhere in Spain, never abandoned smaller forms. Lazkano found inspiration in the tiny chalk sculptures that Oteiza intended to serve as models; far from being mere Êtudes for grander projects, however, the composer sees these intricate and minute creations as objets d’art in their own right, inviting contemplation and speculation of various sorts. Indeed, as the composer writes in his notes for Errobi-1, which could serve as a summary of the entire laboratory: Chalk, as a white and bright material, used to draw the sign and thereby communicating it while running out as it leaves its mark behind, chalk, which squeaks on the slate, which is an extension of the hand and therefore a prosthesis for man and whose memory is linked to childhood and to the experience of learning, chalk which exteriorizes all thoughts through its crumbly nature, chalk erodes itself and turns to dust. The laboratory as a whole first manifested itself in Hatsik, which could be translated as ‘Pausing to Catch Breath’.

These three pieces, all for a nonstandard quartet, are the most diverse in terms of scoring and style within the entire chalk universe. Hints of melody, often taken to extremes of dynamics and register, thread their way through the three works, the melodic fragments trying to reach the foreground only to find their attempts thwarted. As the pieces progress, the melody runs its course, then is subsumed into silence.

Hatsik-1 assimilates the distinctive sonority of an E-flat clarinet with trombone, cello and piano. Hatsik-2 is an angular, concise statement for alto saxophone, double bass, accordion, and percussion. Hatsik-3 employs both clarinet and alto saxophone alongside violin and piano and is the most extreme work of the trilogy, taking its title literally with its frequent pauses. These caesurae allow ample occasion for reflection, but also heighten the impression of an interrupted, disjointed flow of ideas.

The ensemble’s artistic direction has developed its repertoire towards hybrids of different trends such as poetry, bunraku puppets, electronic music, philosophy, and a series of pedagogical projects designed for children.

Ich kam mit der Musik von Ramon Lazkano 2001 durch seine Werke für Gitarre in Berührung. Seine Ideen und Klangpalette waren es, die mich sofort faszinierten. Irgendwie assoziierte ich seine Musik mit einem Farbbereich zwischen weiß und grau, in dem die Noten auf entrückte Weise als Schatten von Harmonien erscheinen und alle Klänge ganz natürlich, aus einer tief empfundenen persönlichen Schreibweise erwachsen. Durch meine Arbeit mit dem SMASH ensemble wurde ich mit seiner Musik vertrauter und meine Eindrücke verfestigten sich: ich hörte eine fließende und schwebende Klangwelt, in welcher Werden und Vergehen auf natürliche Weise die Musik antreiben, als wäre das Lebendige durch Menschenhand geschaffen. Nachdem mir Ramón Lazkano erstmals über „Laborategia Igeltsoen“ (Das Laboratorium des Kalksteins), welches durch Jorge Oteizas Skulpturen inspiriert wurde, erzählte, durchkämmte ich Partituren und Kunstbücher nach einer Beziehung zwischen diesen beiden Künstlern.

Die Verbindung zu diesem schwebenden Klang fand ich schließlich in Oteizas Skulpturen. Es sind die weißen, beziehungsweise grauen, kreidigen Farben, die einem die Landschaft des Baskenlandes und damit auch jener Orte wachrufen, in welchen die beiden Künstler aufwuchsen und sich entwickelten. Unmittelbar daraufhin beschlossen wir diesen Zyklus mit dem SMASH ensemble aufzuführen, wobei ironischerweise der ganze Zyklus nicht ein Stück für Gitarre beinhaltet. Diese Aufnahme stellt eine erste Stellungnahme des SMASH ensemble zu diesem Zyklus dar.

Wir entdeckten Schönheit in diesen Klangwelten und unsere Arbeit gewährt Einblick in unsere musikalische Persönlichkeit, wie auch unseren ästhetischen Geschmack. Es sind die Worte der berühmten, jedoch anonymen Abhandlung „Über das Erhabene“, die unsere Gefühle für dieses Repertoire wohl am besten ausdrückt: „Der Erhabene versucht den Zuhörer nicht allein durch Überzeugungskraft, sondern durch Verzückung zu lenken. Diese Einschnitte geben einem reichlich Raum für Reflexion, verstärken aber auch den Eindruck eines unzusammenhängenden Ideenflusses.

Walter Benjamin (1892-1940) Das SMASH ensemble, welches als eines der führenden Ensembles Europas gilt, ist ein „Cluster” der sich aus Musikern aus aller Welt, die sich auf zeitgenössische Musik spezialisiert haben, zusammensetzt. Die künstlerische Leitung hat das Repertoire des Ensembles mit einem Augenmerk auf Hybrid-Produktionen, wie z.B. mit Poesie, Bunraku Marionetten, elektronischer Musik, Philosophie und einer Reihe verschiedenster pädagogischer Projekte entwickelt.

Das SMASH ensemble ist aufgetreten in Tschechien, Finnland, Frankreich, Deutschland, Italien, Litauen, Mexiko, Polen, Portugal und Spanien. Desweiteren nahm das Ensemble an zahlreichen Festivals und Konzertreihen teil, wie beispielsweise an Musiikin Aika (Finnland), ContemPuls, Meetings of New Music Plus 2011 (Tschechien), Saison Opus (Frankreich), Festival Internacional de Guitarra de Monterrey, Festival de Música Contemporánea Música Nueva (Mexiko), Festival ENSEMS (Valencia), Museo Reina Sofia, Auditorio Nacional (Madrid), Nous Sons Festival (Barcelona), Quincena Musical Donostiarra, Festival de Música de Alicante, Cycle of Contemporary Music BBVA Foundation (Bilbao), Gaida Festival (Vilnius, Litauen), Guarda Contemporary Music Cycle (Portugal) und Centre Tchèque, Fondation Suisse (Paris, Frankreich).

J’ai découvert la musique de Ramon Lazkano en 2001 à travers ses pièces pour guitare. J’ai été aussitôt fasciné par ses idées et sa palette sonore. D’une certaine manière, j’ai associé sa musique à une gamme de couleurs entre blanc et gris, où les notes apparaissent comme des ombres surnaturelles d’harmoniques, chaque son découlant naturellement d’une écriture profondément personnelle.

Plus tard, à travers SMASH ensemble, je me suis rapproché encore un peu plus de sa musique, et mes sensations sont devenues plus précises : des sons flottants et suspendus, qui vivent et meurent naturellement, déambulent dans sa musique, comme si la vie était façonnée par des mains humaines.

Lorsque Ramon Lazkano m’a pour la première fois parlé d’ « Igeltsoen Laborategia » (Laboratoire des Craies), inspiré des sculptures de Jorge Oteiza, j’ai parcouru partitions et livres d’art à la recherche d’un lien entre les deux artistes, et j’ai découvert dans les sculptures d’Oteiza une sorte d’écho à ces sons suspendus. Ces teintes calcaires blanches et grises évoquent le paysage du Pays basque où les deux artistes ont grandi et mûri. Immédiatement, nous avons décidé avec SMASH ensemble de programmer ce cycle instrumental. Ironie du sort, celui-ci ne comporte pas la moindre pièce pour guitare.

Cet enregistrement est une véritable profession de foi pour SMASH ensemble. Nous avons cherché la beauté dans des sons complexes, et notre performance reflète notre personnalité musicale et notre inclination esthétique. Nos sentiments vis-à-vis de cette œuvre ne peuvent être mieux exprimés qu’à travers ces mots du célèbre traité anonyme « Sur le Sublime » : …Le sublime ne cherche pas à persuader son audience, mais il la ravit, la transporte, et produit en elle une certaine admiration mêlée d’étonnement et de surprise, qui surpasse le simple fait de convaincre ou de plaire…
