NMDC has a rich history of mine development and exploration across various minerals and regions in India. In the past, the company has successfully developed several mines, including the Kiriburu and Meghataburu iron ore mines in Bihar, the Khetri Copper deposit in Rajasthan, the Kudremukh Iron Ore Mine in Karnataka, and the Phosphate deposit in Mussorie. Some of these mines were later handed over to other companies in the public sector, while others became independent companies. Presently, NMDC is a major producer and exporter of iron ore in India. It operates iron ore mines in the Bailadila sector (Chhattisgarh State) and the Donimalai sector (Karnataka State). From these mines, NMDC produces approximately 22 million tonnes of iron ore from the Bailadila sector and 7 million tonnes from the Donimalai sector. The company's iron ore production has contributed significantly to the mineral sector in India over the last five decades. NMDC's noteworthy contributions have led to its recognition as a Schedule-A Public Sector Company. Additionally, in 2008, the Department of Public Enterprises categorized NMDC as a 'Navratna' Public Sector Enterprise, acknowledging its growing status and consistently excellent performance.
